Remember when... Allow me to date myself for a moment. I’m thinking back to family vacations… way back. Sometime after dinosaurs roamed the earth and before the technology takeover. Back to a day when the family piled in the station wagon, suitcases strapped to the top, kids (and probably a dog) in the rear of “the wagon”, free and untethered by seatbelts. Windows rolled down. Dog hair blowing everywhere. Mom reading the map and co-piloting. Dad not paying attention. Road-side picnics from the ice chest. Ahh…and that station wagon. Remember it? It was huge by today’s car standards, like a tank rolling down the highway. Wood grain side panels and wing windows. I remember our first carriage with electric windows. Oh my, we kids thought it was a new toy. My dad threatened to put duct tape over the button if we did not STOP! Or leave us on the side of the road. The road. Oh yes, back to the road. In the Arbuckles, the “mother road” is Hwy. 77 and we like to say “a little bit of heaven on 77”. And that is what we think we have here – a little bit of heaven. No matter which highway you take – 77, 7, 177, 70 – you will see what we mean. Depart from I-35, the super road, and take the back road. Past rolling hills and geological wonders, quaint downtowns, mom and pop shops, and lots of water to play in. The old station wagons have been replaced by the SUV. Instead of everyone counting car tags from great distances, now every passenger is occupied with an electronic device, oblivious to their fellow travelers. Maybe it is time to commandeer the tech toys and lock them in the glove box. Crack open a Fun Times Magazine and plan the adventures ahead. Featured in Better Homes & Garden Congratulations to Sole’renity Spa and Little Soles Children’s Spa on their feature in the Better Homes and Garden Magazine. The Spas were listed in the October 2015 article titled “Ten Best Family Spas”. The magazine wrote Parents get pampered at Sole’renity, and kids can follow suit at the Little Soles Kids’ Spa. Fall in Love With Turner Falls Turner Falls Park, the oldest park in Oklahoma, has received national publicity and has served as a classroom for the naturalist. Many springs from the world famous Arbuckle Mountains form Honey Creek, which cascades down a seventy-seven (77) foot fall to a natural swimming pool, making the majestic Turner Falls the largest waterfall in Oklahoma. The park is accented with beautiful picnic areas, natural trails, caves, geological wonders and two natural swimming pools unique in nature. The Turner Falls area has been described as one of the three geological windows into our past. The Grand Canyon and the Black Hills of South Dakota are the other two areas that hold this unique distinction. As early as 1868, Turner Falls was known as a popular recreational area. The City of Davis operates the park and you are welcome to enjoy the 720 acres of fun in the “Heart of the Arbuckle Mountain.”

When you visit the Turner Falls area, you are exploring the natural wonder of Oklahoma. Some describe it as a diamond in the rough, while others describe it as the “Gem of the Arbuckles.” Back by popular demand is Turner Falls Trout Fishing. Honey Creek is stocked between mid-November and mid-March with trout. The weather is cooler and the fishing is fine! Find out from the park office about rules and limits. Camping is available for those who wish to experience a closeness to one of God’s greatest gifts to nature. NATIONAL PARKS CELEBRATE CENTENNIAL

The National Park Service will celebrate their 100th birthday in 2016. The Centennial will celebrate the achievements of the past 100 years, but it is really about the future. It’s about kicking off a second century of stewardship for America’s national parks. Most importantly, it’s about inviting you to join in. In celebration of the Centennial, the NPS unveiled the Centennial Logo as well as the Find Your Park campaign. The movement hopes to inspire all people to connect with, enjoy, and support America’s national parks. Chickasaw National Recreation Area kicked off its celebration and recognition of the National Park Service’s Centennial with a Historic Candlelight Tour presented in December 2015. Over 700 visitors attended the candlelight tour and learned about park history and the role of the National Park Service in protecting and managing the park since 1916. Several park related Centennial celebrations will take place at Chickasaw over the next year. Centennial events for 2016 that are being considered include: dedication of the new bridge across Rock Creek, connecting the Chickasaw Cultural Center and the park; Historic Candlelight Tour; a lecture series at the Travertine Nature Center and more. Abuelita’s Mexican Restaurant Visit Their New Location

A long-established restaurant is celebrating progress with a beautiful new home. Family-owned Abuelita’s Mexican Restaurant is a favorite of locals and visitors alike and is now serving their customers in a more convenient site. Better access and abundant parking are 2 of the bonuses for their clientele when they visit the open, spacious eatery. The Robledo family came to Sulphur in 2001 and has enjoyed raising their children in a small town. Artesian Arts Festival Set A Celebration of Native Art More than 5,000 art lovers are expected to stream into Sulphur Saturday, May 28 for the third annual Artesian Arts Festival. The Chickasaw Nation is hosting the Memorial Day weekend arts festival at the Artesian Plaza. A community celebration of Native American artists and all forms of art are the main focus of the festival. The event features diverse art media and a variety of visual art such as paintings, basketry, jewelry, sculpture, metalworking, bead work, textiles and pottery. Organizers are accepting 90 Native artists for the 2016 Artesian Arts Festival. Open to artists from all federally recognized tribes, artists will compete in a juried competition in as many as 21 categories. Cash awards will be presented for first, second and third place in each category, as well as “Best of Show.” Dozens of booths lining Muskogee Street in Sulphur will display works of the artists. The day-long festival will also highlight a variety of musical entertainment, tribal dance demonstrations and regalia, food trucks and food booths, a special area for children’s activities and a senior citizens’ arts and crafts booth. Open to the public at no charge, the Artesian Arts Festival welcomed more than 4,500 to last year’s festival. Ms. Hayes, an area resident for a decade, and her husband have a cattle ranch and love the quiet, rural life they have built. In visiting with her, I find that she is very passionate about running a professional waxing studio, is an Oklahoma State Board Licensed Esthetician and a member of the Association of Skin Care Professionals. She relays that her clients range in age from 15 (swimmers, cheerleaders, etc. with mom’s consent) to 80. Many of her regular customers drive from a 60 mile range to see her. It seems the services of a professionally-trained waxer are much preferred over the minimally trained waxer in the back room at the beauty shop. Chickasaw Cultural Center Not too long ago, the Chickasaw Cultural Center was only a dream, fueled by vision of Chickasaws who wanted a place to revitalize, celebrate and share Chickasaw culture. Chickasaw people envisioned a place they could call home and guests could appreciate the story of the Chickasaw people. Today, a cultural awakening has arisen at the Chickasaw Cultural Center. In the five years since the massive campus opened, more than 400,000 guests from across the globe have experienced the story of the unconquered and unconquerable Chickasaw Nation. Built on the dreams, imagination, determination and vision of Chickasaw citizens, the Chickasaw Cultural Center’s serene 109-acre campus has hosted both international guests as well as local school children. Each aspect, from the trickling water features to the carefully planned café menu, was integrated into the Chickasaw Cultural Center because of its cultural significance. Grandparents, parents and children visit the Cultural Center and become immersed in the culture; learning the art of beading, basketry, Stomp Dance, Stickball and other culturally-significant activities. As guests are actively participating in these activities, they develop an appreciation of the history and heritage of the Chickasaw people.

Stickball games, cooking demonstrations, language lessons, corn husk doll and archery demonstrations. The village features traditional Chickasaw homes, a replica mound and cultural instructors demonstrating traditional crafts such as beadwork, basketry and pottery, tanning hides, bow making and flute making.

A Little Bit of Motorcycle Heaven on 77 What started as a fascination with vintage Harley-Davidson Motorcycles, has morphed in to a love of antique wheels of all kinds. Caveman Motorcycle Museum, south of Davis, is now a collection of historical items, some on 2 wheels, some related to motorcycles… or those that love them! In the early days of this attraction, it was the small bikes, called “Hummers”, that piqued the interest of Tom and Sandra Webb. It didn’t take long before they started acquiring pieces of history on wheels. Over the years, that collection has taken on a life of its own. Now, they take delight in sharing it with visitors of all ages. A stop at the Caveman Motorcycle Museum is a pleasure for enthusiast or novice. Motorcycles dating from 1940, automobiles from 1922 to 1956, personal family heirlooms and other memorabilia are on display. Check out the BSA Military Bike, the 1960 Panhead, Cushman Scooters and so much more. Out front, a Model T that looks like it carried the Clampetts to town; inside a 1956 pickup that has been in the Webb family for 4 generations. Make Time to Make Memories When I was younger, we lived in a city. The world seemed so small to me then, when I would stare up at the numerous buildings that cluttered my view of the sky. My backyard was the largest thing that I’d ever explored, and I yearned to see more, hear more, do more. I didn’t want a sandbox; I wanted a sandy beach by the lake, and the few trees we had in the yard couldn’t compare to the forests I longed to experience. Thankfully, my parents also had a craving for something greater. In the summertime, we would pack up our RV and make a small voyage across Oklahoma to a national or state park to camp. It would take days to gather everything we needed, and loading it seemed to take twice as long, but I loved the thrill when we finally got in the car and pulled out of the driveway. The ride would be full of anticipation, but it was always worth it. All of those times that we had in that old RV have brought us so much closer, and bonded us together as a family. It wasn’t just God’s creation that we enjoyed. We often made a trip to the nearest town to eat at the favorite local diner, or stop by a farmer’s market for fresh fruits and vegetables. People in small towns are always friendly, smiling and waving even if they’ve never met you before. It’s fun to join the hustle and bustle down the streets as people come in and out of the shops. We sometimes visited one of the little antique stores to find a souvenir to remember the trip by. As we grow older things tend to lose their “magic”. But when I smell the scent of redbuds in bloom, I feel like I’m being swept back in time to that little girl playing by the creeks and tossing pebbles in the water. It’s funny how memories can cling to places, waiting for us to return and relive them. I know that I could revisit an old campsite at eighty years old and still be able to hear my younger sister’s laugh as we bumped around the volleyball. I couldn’t be more thankful for all of the reminiscences that remind me of family and friends. Creating special moments are vital to a happy life, so go and make some! Take the vacation that you’ve always wanted to go on. Get away for a few days and camp in a tent with the family. Take pictures from the top of a mountain. Seize the opportunity to do the things that are truly important and live life to its fullest extent. I promise, you won’t regret it! Braylen Day, 16, is an aspiring young writer. No longer a visitor, she now resides in the Arbuckles and continues to make memorable moments with her family.

Diverse ziplines let everyone in on the fun.

Vacation sights set on the Arbuckles? Put a zipline adventure on the agenda. With the addition of a Soaring Eagle-style ride set to open in summer 2016, the choices expand and almost everyone will find one that fits their activity level and capabilities. New to the area, and the first in Oklahoma, is the Soaring Eagle-style ride of Turner Falls Zipline. Visitors will experience a different type of zipline where they will soar like an eagle while accelerating down the mountainside on a suspended cable. You will share the fun with a friend on the comfortable side-by-side seats that you are belted in to. This opens the attraction to riders of most ages and capabilities. No harness, no hiking, no hurdles! Your adventure on Turner Falls Zipline launches from, and returns to, the Turner Falls Overlook. After being seated and strapped in, you are mechanically pulled 700 feet across the valley to the top of a 130 foot tall tower. This tower stands on the mountain top above Collings Castle, with views across the Arbuckle Mountains. As you ride, you will see Turner Falls, Honey Creek and the Castle from an entirely different perspective. A moment after you reach the tower…you are released to fly back across! Wheee…what a ride! Owners Gary and Joyce Fielding are excited about bringing this attraction to the area. They see the Turner Falls Zipline as a ministry and look forward to offering a zip activity to a wider range of people. Gary commented that the large eagle painted above the seats reminds him of one of his favorite scriptures Isaiah 40:31- and hopes it is an encouragement to many. The Air Donkey Zipline Adventure is celebrating their 4th year of providing a zipline challenge to visitors. At Air Donkey, you take a flight through the unique geology of the Arbuckles. The 2 hour course includes hiking, climbing stairs, traversing a sky bridge and flying on 6 amazing ziplines. You should be reasonably

healthy to embark on this journey. Some of the zip runs, over 1 mile total, are several stories high with breathtaking views! Steve and Rosalind Burrough, owners, are fun-loving, outdoorsy people and love sharing this adventure with their “zippers”. Safety is a huge factor; all guides are trained and certified. Everyone goes on the “bunny zip” for orientation and guidelines are strictly enforced. Steve laughingly assures folks that this is “safer than a shopping trip in Dallas”. Some folks taking part in an Air Donkey Zipline Adventure are adrenaline junkies, looking for that next great exploit. But lots of people just decide to get out of their comfort zone, challenge themselves and walk away from their experience with an increased sense of confidence. Become a Friend of the Park! Does your family have a long history of reunions in the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, possibly dating back to the Platt National Park days? Or perhaps you are a “newbie” to the peace and serenity this Park offers. Either way, you are invited to join the Friends of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, or Friends of the Park, as they are commonly known. For the last two decades, Park Friends Groups have been created to assist National Parks all across America. These groups support needed park programs and projects that have been beyond the reach of appropriated dollars, especially in these days of cut-backs. Friends Groups are established to help “keep the park’s mission alive”. Friends support a variety of park activities that might include interpretive & educational programs, awareness building, fund raising, membership programs and many of the “extras” that enhance our park.

We need your help. If you enjoy the special place that the Chickasaw National Recreation Area is and want to see the amazing beauty and renewing setting remain for generations to come, become a Friend. Share your ideas for projects and join hands with other Friends to support this great resource. Unlike many National Parks, CNRA does not charge an admission fee for entrance. The Chickasaw Cultural Center has Saturday night movies each week in their hi-tech auditorium housing a 2,700 square foot screen and 2k HD projector. For $3.00, you can catch the movie, but for $5.00 the ticket, drink and popcorn are all yours. If you happen to be in the area on the third Saturday night of the month, take a drive to the Gene Autry Oklahoma Museum. Dougherty, Dougherty, OK lies deep in the heart of the Arbuckle Mountains, on the Washita River. The community’s storied past earned it a reputation of being tough and it was said “if you came with an attitude, you left with an attitude adjustment!” The truthful history of this burg is a tale of pre-statehood settlement by pioneer-ranchers, including Mazeppa Turner, the namesake of Turner Falls Park. In 1887, the railroad and post office were established and 1899 brought the first church. A school was chartered in 1908. Early day Dougherty was supported by rock-crushing plants, 2 cotton gins, farming and ranching. This is also the birthplace of Kay Starr, pop and jazz singer and was a location for filming the movie “Dillinger” in 1972. Today’s Dougherty has a different story. Quiet and secluded, not a lot goes on here... and that is just how the natives like it! Many families have been here for generations. A short distance to area attractions and a stone’s throw to the world’s largest youth camp, Falls Creek Baptist Conference Center, a drive to Dougherty pays off in scenic beauty, whether by auto or motorcycle. Lodging has recently been added to Dougherty’s list of businesses. Like the town, this is not your run of the mill lodging. This is all about sleeping in a tree house, albeit a very modern tree house. The Rock Creek Retreat offers the fun of having that lofty treehouse view combined with all the creature comforts we desire as adults. Rather than climb branches, count on the sturdy staircase for access. Likewise for your exit, or you may want to try a glide on the slide or the fireman’s pole.

Have no fear, The Toy & Action Figure Museum is here! At The Toy and Action Figure Museum in Pauls Valley, the young and young at heart will step into the fantasy world of superheroes and comic books. For the small price of admission, you may depart from harsh reality and become the conqueror that saves the day…or learn about one. Visitors to the museum will find displays explaining how action figures are created, from concept to design through manufacturing. Just being in the 6,000 square foot building, with all the explosive colors, is a visual treat. Viewing the exhibits will take you back to long-forgotten heroes as well as acquaint you with present day characters. Guests walk through a “skyscaper” to enter in to “Action City”. Action figures are hidden within the colorful shapes and your eyes will have to go on a scavenger hunt to see all the treasures. There are rooms where families can interact and become their favorite superhero. Be sure to check out the life-size diorama of an adult collector’s bedroom and the cave-like room with an extensive Batman collection. The Toy and Action Figure Museum is also home to the Oklahoma Cartoonists Collection, a display of original art by individuals who have worked professionally in the field of comics. The artists of Dick Tracy, Broomhilda, Alley Oop, Batman and more have their work on exhibit here, and all have Oklahoma ties. Come to the newest outdoor water park in the area. The Family Aquatic Center is located in Pauls Valley’s Wacker Park. Swimmers of all ages will be able to find a way to cool off in the pool’s variety of features. Children will have fun with the toddler catfish slide and find endless hours of fun on the zero beach entry pool’s water playground. The playground structure will have slides, sprays and huge tipping bucket. Teens will enjoy the body slides and the bowl slide. The bowl slide is a water ride that circles riders around 2-4 times before dropping them into an 8-foot pool of water. Other features the entire family will enjoy include a lazy river, a three lane lap pool with a diving board, plenty of shade umbrellas, lounge chairs, a picnic area and the all-important snack bar. The water park is part of the Donald W. Reynolds Recreation Center facility. The construction of the $3.6 million aquatics facility began in late 2012 and opened the summer of 2013. Pauls Valley, OK is a beautiful little city nestled in the basin of the Washita River. Established in 1857, the town grew and prospered with the addition of the railroad in 1887. The quaint downtown, with its brick streets, has been named a Main Street City and it a Nationally Registered Historic District. The Santa Fe Depot is a significant part of Pauls Valley’s history. This 1905 structure was saved from demolition in 1989 and has gone from boarded up eyesore to a jewel of the downtown and serves as the Santa Fe Depot Museum. Now housing a collection of photos, memorabilia and pioneer artifacts, the museum also has a steam locomotive, coal tender and vintage red caboose just outside. The Toy and Action Figure Museum is a unique opportunity for guest of all ages. For the kids, a trip into the fantasy world of cartoon and super hero characters is alive and in full color. For the young at heart, this is a blissful stroll down memory lane. The younger set will particularly enjoy hands-on play room.

Celebration, relaxation and everything in between is their claim…and they back it up. The beautifully appointed facility is non-smoking and welcomes patrons into cozy, intimate seating areas that invite you to kick back. A great place to gather with friends at the end of your day. Paradise on the Water

Oklahoma“s First Playground Lake Murray State Park is Oklahoma’s first state park. It is named after one of the state’s early governors, William H. “Alfalfa Bill” Murray. The park is home to Tucker Tower Museum, newly renovated and being used to tell the story of the building of the park by C.C.C. and W.P.A workmen. A new Nature Center contains exhibits about the water, natural and cultural history, and green living. The land for Lake Murray State Park was acquired in 1933. Lake Murray Dam was completed in 1937 with Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Projects Administration labor. You can still see the original C.C.C. stone structures scattered around the park. Ranking as Oklahoma’s largest state park, it contains 12,496 lush, wooded acres, has 5,728 surface acres of water, and 150 miles of state-owned shoreline. The lake is a beautiful setting for a variety of activities. Finding fun things to do at Lake Murray State Park is easy. Finding time to do everything might be a problem. Several swimming and picnicking areas are marked and the lake is popular among scuba divers. You will also find a golf course, Lake Murray Lodge & Cabins, and camping. Art, antiques, clothing, crafts…oh my…you just can’t list all of the possible wares the vendors might be peddling. But a huge element of the vintage market experience is the atmosphere.
