Remember when... Allow me to date myself for a moment. I’m thinking back to family vacations… way back. Sometime after dinosaurs roamed the earth and before the technology takeover. Back to a day when the family piled in the station wagon, suitcases strapped to the top, kids (and probably a dog) in the rear of “the wagon”, free and untethered by seatbelts. Windows rolled down. Dog hair blowing everywhere. Mom reading the map and co-piloting. Dad not paying attention. Road-side picnics from the ice chest. Ahh…and that station wagon. Remember it? It was huge by today’s car standards, like a tank rolling down the highway. Wood grain side panels and wing windows. I remember our first carriage with electric windows. Oh my, we kids thought it was a new toy. My dad threatened to put duct tape over the button if we did not STOP! Or leave us on the side of the road. The road. Oh yes, back to the road. In the Arbuckles, the “mother road” is Hwy. 77 and we like to say “a little bit of heaven on 77”. And that is what we think we have here – a little bit of heaven. No matter which highway you take – 77, 7, 177, 70 – you will see what we mean. Depart from I-35, the super road, and take the back road. Past rolling hills and geological wonders, quaint downtowns, mom and pop shops, and lots of water to play in. The old station wagons have been replaced by the SUV. Instead of everyone counting car tags from great distances, now every passenger is occupied with an electronic device, oblivious to their fellow travelers. Maybe it is time to commandeer the tech toys and lock them in the glove box. Crack open a Fun Times Magazine and plan the adventures ahead. With maps, reference pages and informative stories, this will be your guide to all things Arbuckle. This issue will give you a glimpse backward and help you plan forward. Take the time to make memories with the family now… a little something for the kids to laugh about later!

Featured in Better Homes & Garden Congratulations to Sole’renity Spa and Little Soles Children’s Spa on their feature in the Better Homes and Garden Magazine. The Spas were listed in the October 2015 article titled “Ten Best Family Spas”. The magazine wrote Parents get pampered at Sole’renity, and kids can follow suit at the Little Soles Kids’ Spa. On the roster: manis, flavored soaks, chair massage, and a chocolate frosting facial – complete with kiddo-size robes and slippers. The Spas were the only such facility in Oklahoma to be given the BH&G top honors. Family time spent “spa-ing” is a great way to slow down together and share a restful respite. With so much to do in the Arbuckle Area, a trip to Sole’renity and Little Soles provides a restorative pause in the busyness. Call to reserve an appointment – 580-622-8128. Also, visit the website for info at www.solerenity.com. Hats off to Rhonda Mordecai and her staff for the exquisite services offered and the care they provide.

Fall in Love With Turner Falls Turner Falls Park, the oldest park in Oklahoma, has received national publicity and has served as a classroom for the naturalist. Many springs from the world famous Arbuckle Mountains form Honey Creek, which cascades down a seventy-seven (77) foot fall to a natural swimming pool, making the majestic Turner Falls the largest waterfall in Oklahoma. The park is accented with beautiful picnic areas, natural trails, caves, geological wonders and two natural swimming pools unique in nature. The Turner Falls area has been described as one of the three geological windows into our past. The Grand Canyon and the Black Hills of South Dakota are the other two areas that hold this unique distinction. As early as 1868, Turner Falls was known as a popular recreational area. The City of Davis operates the park and you are welcome to enjoy the 720 acres of fun in the “Heart of the Arbuckle Mountain.”
When you visit the Turner Falls area, you are exploring the natural wonder of Oklahoma. Some describe it as a diamond in the rough, while others describe it as the “Gem of the Arbuckles.” Back by popular demand is Turner Falls Trout Fishing. Honey Creek is stocked between mid-November and mid-March with trout. The weather is cooler and the fishing is fine! Find out from the park office about rules and limits. Camping is available for those who wish to experience a closeness to one of God’s greatest gifts to nature. Plans are never ending at Turner Falls, with the planning board working to develop even more attractions. Visit Turner Falls Park and experience the hospitality of Arbuckle Mountain Area. The whole family will appreciate the clean and safe outdoor fun the park has to offer. For more information call (580) 369-2988, or write: Turner Falls Park, Davis, Oklahoma 73030, or visit the website: www.turnerfallspark.com.

NATIONAL PARKS CELEBRATE CENTENNIAL
The National Park Service will celebrate their 100th birthday in 2016. The Centennial will celebrate the achievements of the past 100 years, but it is really about the future. It’s about kicking off a second century of stewardship for America’s national parks. Most importantly, it’s about inviting you to join in. In celebration of the Centennial, the NPS unveiled the Centennial Logo as well as the Find Your Park campaign. The movement hopes to inspire all people to connect with, enjoy, and support America’s national parks. Celebrate our parks by joining the movement at FindYourPark.com and by using #FindYourPark on social media.

Several park related Centennial celebrations will take place at Chickasaw over the next year. Centennial events for 2016 that are being considered include: dedication of the new bridge across Rock Creek, connecting the Chickasaw Cultural Center and the park; Historic Candlelight Tour; a lecture series at the Travertine Nature Center and more. Abuelita’s Mexican Restaurant Visit Their New Location
A long-established restaurant is celebrating progress with a beautiful new home. Family-owned Abuelita’s Mexican Restaurant is a favorite of locals and visitors alike and is now serving their customers in a more convenient site. Better access and abundant parking are 2 of the bonuses for their clientele when they visit the open, spacious eatery. The Robledo family came to Sulphur in 2001 and has enjoyed raising their children in a small town. Speaking of the children, most of them work in the restaurant, learning a strong work ethic and how to serve their patrons. They exemplify the great service that is the goal of Abuelita’s. The family’s strong tie to the community is another aspect of business the children have gained. The new location has a meeting room that is offered for parties, meetings and reunions. The space will seat approximately 40 guests and, as long as the group is coming for a meal, there is no charge for use. It is a great space to gather your gang. And the food? The Robledos are serving up the same delicious dishes as before. They offer all of the traditional favorites, seasoned perfectly, plus some surprises. Stop in for a meal at the new location, 2514 W. Broadway (west edge of Sulphur) or call 580-622-2285 for take-out.

Brazilian Waxing… Whaaattt? Cover your eyes kids!
in a Vacation Magazine?
Relax, not to worry. This is a family-friendly magazine. And Heather Hayes of Wax Me Happy is committed to educating women about smart choices in waxing services. She just uses a variety of media avenues to teach. A visit with Heather is definitely educational. Her blog, at www.waxmehappy.com , handles the almost taboo subject in a light-hearted (ok, funny) manner while enlightening the reader, answering those “unaskable” questions. Her desire to inform women about the service and how to shop for a waxer is demonstrated through the posting of “6 Things I Wish I Would Have Known Before Getting My Last Brazilian Wax”. Whether you are looking for waxing services, are just curious, or are almost horrified at the idea – read her blog! Totally entertaining… and highly educational. Ms. Hayes, an area resident for a decade, and her husband have a cattle ranch and love the quiet, rural life they have built. In visiting with her, I find that she is very passionate about running a professional waxing studio, is an Oklahoma State Board Licensed Esthetician and a member of the Association of Skin Care Professionals. She relays that her clients range in age from 15 (swimmers, cheerleaders, etc. with mom’s consent) to 80. Many of her regular customers drive from a 60 mile range to see her. It seems the services of a professionally-trained waxer are much preferred over the minimally trained waxer in the back room at the beauty shop. For further information, visit the website and blog to learn more at www.waxmehappy.com.

Get the Party Started When life deals you lemons, you’ve got to turn it around. Sherrie Watkins and her family turned their “lemon” experience in to a party… or at least the opportunity to assist others with parties and events. As the owner of Party Barn Rentals, Sherrie finds joy in assisting people with fun events and life-changing moments. The family came to Oklahoma from California after seeing a downturn in the housing market and the loss of a business. They were involved in the horse industry and in rodeo activities, so the move to Oklahoma seemed natural. Rural living and small town friendliness of the Arbuckle Area was a healing choice and brought new opportunities. Sherrie stepped out on faith and relocated the party equipment and supplies business to serve southcentral Oklahoma and she has been welcomed with open arms. Party Barn Rentals offers almost anything needed for a special event, meeting, wedding, family reunion…whatever get-together you are getting together for. This is a family business and their combined creativity and a desire to serve and treat each customer special produces a win-win for their patrons. Need themed decorations for your party? They’ve got that! Dance floor and sound system? They’ve got that! Stage? Bar? Arches & candelabras? Pop up tents? Linens? Tables & chairs? They’ve got all of that…and more! Make your event less stressful by calling on the services of Party Barn Rentals. Contact Sherrie at 580-910-8011 or visit the webpage at www.PartyBarnRentals.ca. If she is not out setting up, you may find her at 2508 W. Broadway, on the west edge of Sulphur, across from McDonalds.

Chickasaw Cultural Center Not too long ago, the Chickasaw Cultural Center was only a dream, fueled by vision of Chickasaws who wanted a place to revitalize, celebrate and share Chickasaw culture. Chickasaw people envisioned a place they could call home and guests could appreciate the story of the Chickasaw people. Today, a cultural awakening has arisen at the Chickasaw Cultural Center. In the five years since the massive campus opened, more than 400,000 guests from across the globe have experienced the story of the unconquered and unconquerable Chickasaw Nation. Built on the dreams, imagination, determination and vision of Chickasaw citizens, the Chickasaw Cultural Center’s serene 109-acre campus has hosted both international guests as well as local school children. Each aspect, from the trickling water features to the carefully planned café menu, was integrated into the Chickasaw Cultural Center because of its cultural significance. Grandparents, parents and children visit the Cultural Center and become immersed in the culture; learning the art of beading, basketry, Stomp Dance, Stickball and other culturally-significant activities. As guests are actively participating in these activities, they develop an appreciation of the history and heritage of the Chickasaw people.
Stickball games, cooking demonstrations, language lessons, corn husk doll and archery demonstrations. The village features traditional Chickasaw homes, a replica mound and cultural instructors demonstrating traditional crafts such as beadwork, basketry and pottery, tanning hides, bow making and flute making.
The Chickasaw Cultural Center, 867 Cooper Memorial Drive, on the west edge of Sulphur, is open Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. For more information, call (580) 622-7130 or visit www.chickasawculturalcenter.com.

The Chickasaw Cultural Center campus has also expanded since opening. Massive outdoor sculptures, such as “The Arrival” by Chickasaw artists Mike Larsen’s and Joanna Underwood’s southeastern pottery sculptures intermingle with beautiful water and rock features and native landscaping. The Apisa Art Gallery, opened in 2013, serves as a home of Chickasaw art, a place to appreciate the art and artists of the Chickasaw Nation. Hundreds of Native Americans have connected with their family heritage in the Holisso: The Center for the Study of Chickasaw Cultural and History. A giant video wall has been added to the Chikasha Poya exhibit center, to share stories of Chickasaw lives. Learning opportunities have expanded in the Chikasha Inchokka´ Traditional Village where energetic cultural instructors, dressed in 1700’s regalia, share activities such as

A Little Bit of Motorcycle Heaven on 77 What started as a fascination with vintage Harley-Davidson Motorcycles, has morphed in to a love of antique wheels of all kinds. Caveman Motorcycle Museum, south of Davis, is now a collection of historical items, some on 2 wheels, some related to motorcycles… or those that love them! In the early days of this attraction, it was the small bikes, called “Hummers”, that piqued the interest of Tom and Sandra Webb. It didn’t take long before they started acquiring pieces of history on wheels. Over the years, that collection has taken on a life of its own. Now, they take delight in sharing it with visitors of all ages. A stop at the Caveman Motorcycle Museum is a pleasure for enthusiast or novice. Motorcycles dating from 1940, automobiles from 1922 to 1956, personal family heirlooms and other memorabilia are on display. Check out the BSA Military Bike, the 1960 Panhead, Cushman Scooters and so much more. Out front, a Model T that looks like it carried the Clampetts to town; inside a 1956 pickup that has been in the Webb family for 4 generations. While you are in the Arbuckles, pay a visit to Caveman Motorcycle Museum. Their hours vary seasonally, so call ahead at 580-369-2764 or 369-8406 or 369-8704. Their facility is handicap accessible and they welcome group tours (call ahead). Check their Facebook page for info. There is no admission fee but your donations help keep history alive and available. Find them at 1775 S. Hwy 77, South of Davis.

Through Braylen’s eyes...
Make Time to Make Memories When I was younger, we lived in a city. The world seemed so small to me then, when I would stare up at the numerous buildings that cluttered my view of the sky. My backyard was the largest thing that I’d ever explored, and I yearned to see more, hear more, do more. I didn’t want a sandbox; I wanted a sandy beach by the lake, and the few trees we had in the yard couldn’t compare to the forests I longed to experience. Thankfully, my parents also had a craving for something greater. In the summertime, we would pack up our RV and make a small voyage across Oklahoma to a national or state park to camp. It would take days to gather everything we needed, and loading it seemed to take twice as long, but I loved the thrill when we finally got in the car and pulled out of the driveway. The ride would be full of anticipation, but it was always worth it. All of those times that we had in that old RV have brought us so much closer, and bonded us together as a family. It wasn’t just God’s creation that we enjoyed. We often made a trip to the nearest town to eat at the favorite local diner, or stop by a farmer’s market for fresh fruits and vegetables. People in small towns are always friendly, smiling and waving even if they’ve never met you before. It’s fun to join the hustle and bustle down the streets as people come in and out of the shops. We sometimes visited one of the little antique stores to find a souvenir to remember the trip by. As we grow older things tend to lose their “magic”. But when I smell the scent of redbuds in bloom, I feel like I’m being swept back in time to that little girl playing by the creeks and tossing pebbles in the water. It’s funny how memories can cling to places, waiting for us to return and relive them. I know that I could revisit an old campsite at eighty years old and still be able to hear my younger sister’s laugh as we bumped around the volleyball. I couldn’t be more thankful for all of the reminiscences that remind me of family and friends. Creating special moments are vital to a happy life, so go and make some! Take the vacation that you’ve always wanted to go on. Get away for a few days and camp in a tent with the family. Take pictures from the top of a mountain. Seize the opportunity to do the things that are truly important and live life to its fullest extent. I promise, you won’t regret it! Braylen Day, 16, is an aspiring young writer. No longer a visitor, she now resides in the Arbuckles and continues to make memorable moments with her family.

With the addition of a Soaring Eagle-style ride set to open in summer 2016, the choices expand and almost everyone will find one that fits their activity level and capabilities. New to the area, and the first in Oklahoma, is the Soaring Eagle-style ride of Turner Falls Zipline. Visitors will experience a different type of zipline where they will soar like an eagle while accelerating down the mountainside on a suspended cable. You will share the fun with a friend on the comfortable side-by-side seats that you are belted in to. This opens the attraction to riders of most ages and capabilities. No harness, no hiking, no hurdles! Your adventure on Turner Falls Zipline launches from, and returns to, the Turner Falls Overlook. After being seated and strapped in, you are mechanically pulled 700 feet across the valley to the top of a 130 foot tall tower. This tower stands on the mountain top above Collings Castle, with views across the Arbuckle Mountains. As you ride, you will see Turner Falls, Honey Creek and the Castle from an entirely different perspective. A moment after you reach the tower…you are released to fly back across! Wheee…what a ride! Owners Gary and Joyce Fielding are excited about bringing this attraction to the area. They see the Turner Falls Zipline as a ministry and look forward to offering a zip activity to a wider range of people. Gary commented that the large eagle painted above the seats reminds him of one of his favorite scriptures Isaiah 40:31- and hopes it is an encouragement to many. The Air Donkey Zipline Adventure is celebrating their 4th year of providing a zipline challenge to visitors. At Air Donkey, you take a flight through the unique geology of the Arbuckles. The 2 hour course includes hiking, climbing stairs, traversing a sky bridge and flying on 6 amazing ziplines. You should be reasonably
healthy to embark on this journey. Some of the zip runs, over 1 mile total, are several stories high with breathtaking views! Steve and Rosalind Burrough, owners, are fun-loving, outdoorsy people and love sharing this adventure with their “zippers”. Safety is a huge factor; all guides are trained and certified. Everyone goes on the “bunny zip” for orientation and guidelines are strictly enforced. Steve laughingly assures folks that this is “safer than a shopping trip in Dallas”. Some folks taking part in an Air Donkey Zipline Adventure are adrenaline junkies, looking for that next great exploit. But lots of people just decide to get out of their comfort zone, challenge themselves and walk away from their experience with an increased sense of confidence. For the Burroughs, seeing participants gain that assurance is very rewarding. Whether you are looking to just stick your toe in the water of a ziplining adventure or you are ready to fully dive in, the Arbuckle Area has what you need. See the sidebar for contact info.

Become a Friend of the Park! Does your family have a long history of reunions in the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, possibly dating back to the Platt National Park days? Or perhaps you are a “newbie” to the peace and serenity this Park offers. Either way, you are invited to join the Friends of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, or Friends of the Park, as they are commonly known. For the last two decades, Park Friends Groups have been created to assist National Parks all across America. These groups support needed park programs and projects that have been beyond the reach of appropriated dollars, especially in these days of cut-backs. Friends Groups are established to help “keep the park’s mission alive”. Friends support a variety of park activities that might include interpretive & educational programs, awareness building, fund raising, membership programs and many of the “extras” that enhance our park.
We need your help. If you enjoy the special place that the Chickasaw National Recreation Area is and want to see the amazing beauty and renewing setting remain for generations to come, become a Friend. Share your ideas for projects and join hands with other Friends to support this great resource. Unlike many National Parks, CNRA does not charge an admission fee for entrance. Perhaps you, your family or group would like to join Friends of the Park in celebration of that fact. Annual memberships are $25. for individuals, $50. for families with business/corporate levels available. Your dues are tax-deductible and all funds will be used for our local park. You will receive a newsletter, a membership decal and an invitation to the annual dinner and meeting. Membership information is available at Sulphur Chamber of Commerce, 717 W. Broadway, 580-622-2824 or the CNRA Superintendent’s Office at 580-622-7220.
ENJOY A FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT!
The Arbuckle Area offers some great opportunities to take in family-oriented movie night, either “on the cheap” or absolutely free! Venues range from a state-of-theart theatre to shows under the stars.
The Chickasaw Cultural Center has Saturday night movies each week in their hi-tech auditorium housing a 2,700 square foot screen and 2k HD projector. For $3.00, you can catch the movie, but for $5.00 the ticket, drink and popcorn are all yours. Other movies high-lighting the Chickasaw Cultural are shown during the week and you can find out more at www.chickasawculturalcenter.com.
If you happen to be in the area on the third Saturday night of the month, take a drive to the Gene Autry Oklahoma Museum. Admission to the old High School Auditorium is free and one episode of the Gene Autry TV show is shown as well as a Gene Autry movie. The ticket is free, but the memory of childhood nickel movies is priceless! See, some things have gotten cheaper. Contact them at 580-294-3335 or search Facebook. A third movie night option is in historic downtown Sulphur. Movies on the Plaza are free and shown every Saturday night, weather permitting, during June and July. Bring your lawn chairs or blanket for viewing the silver screen event sponsored by the Sulphur Chamber of Commerce. Concessions are available and more information may be found at 580-622-2824 or at www.sulphurchamber.com.

Stroll and Shop in Davis and Sulphur Ahhh…the slower pace of a small town. Time to relax and practice a bit of retail therapy. Fun Times Magazine shopping guide welcomes 3 new shops this year. Get Right Designs, Luxe and The Spice and Tea Exchange, located in Sulphur, all bring unique offerings to round out your shopping experience. Get Right Designs owner Amy McGill has been creating custom screen print and embroidered clothing and accessories long enough to outgrow her startup location. She decided it was time to open a store front in historic downtown where she could meet and better serve customers. Expanding to apparel and accessories lines opens the store to a wider market…and Amy has loved the response. Luxe is one of the Shops at The Artesian Hotel and boasts name-brand apparel, accessories and gifts as it provides a boutique shopping experience. From clothing and jewelry to footwear and handbags, Luxe offers a wide selection of the hottest trends in men’s and women’s fashion as well as hand-crafted Chickasaw jewelry. Featured brands include: True Religion, Vera Bradley, Sperry, Lacoste, Bulova, Michael Kors, Juicy, Oakley, Steve Madden and more. The Spice and Tea Exchange is an unusual store to find in a small town. Also located at The Artesian Hotel Shops, the Sulphur location is the first in Oklahoma. A visit to the store is a scent-sational experience. Spices can be purchased individually or in combinations that elevate any dish you cook. A vast array of teas is displayed and the ladies are eager to educate you on brewing and ways to use.
They carry brand name tools and equipment for the weekend carpenter or the professional. A short drive to Davis extends the shopping. D & D Coins & Collectibles is small but packed full of treasures. Mozie’s Boutiques is several stores in one, providing quite an assortment of goods. Just off Main Street, Stillwater Milling is a western store, Brighton dealer and fashion boutique rolled together. Search the Fun Times Magazine for complete info and locations of each store. Most are featured on pages 28-29.
Several long-established stores invite you to stroll down the streets of Sulphur. The Gettin’ Place is a favorite of locals and visitors for the variety of merchandise. Barbara’s Flowers & Gifts creates beautiful fresh floral arrangements and also carries home décor, candles, jewelry and accessories. 3rd & Broadway is a fun foray to shopping for lovely gifts, fashion and home décor The Mix Mercantile is enjoying a new home. What was a hardware store for decades has now become the location of the “purveyor of fine things” and they have retained the industrial vibe. Shop The Mix for fashion, home accessories, gifts and Amish foods. Speaking of hardware, if you have a man in tow on your shopping trip, send him to Arbuckle Tool & Supply.

Dougherty, Dougherty, OK lies deep in the heart of the Arbuckle Mountains, on the Washita River. The community’s storied past earned it a reputation of being tough and it was said “if you came with an attitude, you left with an attitude adjustment!” The truthful history of this burg is a tale of pre-statehood settlement by pioneer-ranchers, including Mazeppa Turner, the namesake of Turner Falls Park. In 1887, the railroad and post office were established and 1899 brought the first church. A school was chartered in 1908. Early day Dougherty was supported by rock-crushing plants, 2 cotton gins, farming and ranching. This is also the birthplace of Kay Starr, pop and jazz singer and was a location for filming the movie “Dillinger” in 1972. Today’s Dougherty has a different story. Quiet and secluded, not a lot goes on here... and that is just how the natives like it! Many families have been here for generations. A short distance to area attractions and a stone’s throw to the world’s largest youth camp, Falls Creek Baptist Conference Center, a drive to Dougherty pays off in scenic beauty, whether by auto or motorcycle. Lodging has recently been added to Dougherty’s list of businesses. Like the town, this is not your run of the mill lodging. This is all about sleeping in a tree house, albeit a very modern tree house. The Rock Creek Retreat offers the fun of having that lofty treehouse view combined with all the creature comforts we desire as adults. Rather than climb branches, count on the sturdy staircase for access. Likewise for your exit, or you may want to try a glide on the slide or the fireman’s pole.

“ We Give Them Something To Talk About” Visitors to the Arbuckles are often very surprised, pleasantly surprise, by what they experience. Local folks, such as Chamber Directors, shop keepers, wait staff in restaurants, tour assistants and friendly residents at the coffee shop that strike up a conversation with a new face at the next table, hear some of the same comments again and again. The phrase heard most often is along the lines of “I had NO idea…” “I never imagined…” “I am so surprised” Oh yeah, we get a lot of that here in the Arbuckles! The statement is usually followed by “…that it is so green and beautiful.” “…that you had this kind of scenery.” “…by how much there is to do.” “…that people are so friendly.” “…how busy your downtown is. Most small towns are boarded up.” “…that you had so many clear lakes (or streams, or springs).” “…there is something for all ages. My whole family had fun, together.”
we went.” “I didn’t plan enough days to take it all in. I’ll be back.” “Spring was great with all the wildflowers.” “I came at Thanksgiving, and the weather was mild and there were still things to do as a family.” If you are looking at a get-away to the Arbuckles, or you are here on your first visit, just be prepared to experience “the surprise factor.” We believe that after a few pleasant encounters, you’ll look forward to returning to visit our inviting places and friendly faces.
We hear a lot about our people and places. “…when my car broke down, people stopped, and they were helpful and caring.” “People were very welcoming everywhere

Have no fear, The Toy & Action Figure Museum is here! At The Toy and Action Figure Museum in Pauls Valley, the young and young at heart will step into the fantasy world of superheroes and comic books. For the small price of admission, you may depart from harsh reality and become the conqueror that saves the day…or learn about one. Visitors to the museum will find displays explaining how action figures are created, from concept to design through manufacturing. Just being in the 6,000 square foot building, with all the explosive colors, is a visual treat. Viewing the exhibits will take you back to long-forgotten heroes as well as acquaint you with present day characters. Guests walk through a “skyscaper” to enter in to “Action City”. Action figures are hidden within the colorful shapes and your eyes will have to go on a scavenger hunt to see all the treasures. There are rooms where families can interact and become their favorite superhero. Be sure to check out the life-size diorama of an adult collector’s bedroom and the cave-like room with an extensive Batman collection. The Toy and Action Figure Museum is also home to the Oklahoma Cartoonists Collection, a display of original art by individuals who have worked professionally in the field of comics. The artists of Dick Tracy, Broomhilda, Alley Oop, Batman and more have their work on exhibit here, and all have Oklahoma ties. Come to the newest outdoor water park in the area. The Family Aquatic Center is located in Pauls Valley’s Wacker Park. Swimmers of all ages will be able to find a way to cool off in the pool’s variety of features. Children will have fun with the toddler catfish slide and find endless hours of fun on the zero beach entry pool’s water playground. The playground structure will have slides, sprays and huge tipping bucket. Teens will enjoy the body slides and the bowl slide. The bowl slide is a water ride that circles riders around 2-4 times before dropping them into an 8-foot pool of water. Other features the entire family will enjoy include a lazy river, a three lane lap pool with a diving board, plenty of shade umbrellas, lounge chairs, a picnic area and the all-important snack bar. The water park is part of the Donald W. Reynolds Recreation Center facility. The construction of the $3.6 million aquatics facility began in late 2012 and opened the summer of 2013. For more information you can find us on the web at www.dwrrcpv.com or you can call us 405-238-1308.
Pauls Valley, OK is a beautiful little city nestled in the basin of the Washita River. Established in 1857, the town grew and prospered with the addition of the railroad in 1887. The quaint downtown, with its brick streets, has been named a Main Street City and it a Nationally Registered Historic District. The Santa Fe Depot is a significant part of Pauls Valley’s history. This 1905 structure was saved from demolition in 1989 and has gone from boarded up eyesore to a jewel of the downtown and serves as the Santa Fe Depot Museum. Now housing a collection of photos, memorabilia and pioneer artifacts, the museum also has a steam locomotive, coal tender and vintage red caboose just outside. The Toy and Action Figure Museum is a unique opportunity for guest of all ages. For the kids, a trip into the fantasy world of cartoon and super hero characters is alive and in full color. For the young at heart, this is a blissful stroll down memory lane. The younger set will particularly enjoy hands-on play room.

Welcome to Historic Downtown Ardmore, THE Place to Shop and Dine. The Fun Times Magazine welcomes three new Ardmore Main Street businesses. Bar 115, Murray on Main and 3rd Avenue Flea Market are all wonderful additions to the experience that downtown Ardmore offers visitors. Bar 115 is Ardmore’s only upscale Martini Lounge. Celebration, relaxation and everything in between is their claim…and they back it up. The beautifully appointed facility is non-smoking and welcomes patrons into cozy, intimate seating areas that invite you to kick back. A great place to gather with friends at the end of your day. The mixology masters are ready with your favorite drink (martinis, liquors & craft beers) and warm hospitality. Murray on Main is a boutique and home décor store. The Ardmore location has a sister store in Tishomingo; both carry books and spirit wear for Murray State College students. Not a student? Not a problem! This is a great stop for the latest fashion clothing and accessories. A stroll through their “fashions for the home” is certain to turn up a just-right piece for your abode. The store is set in a beautifully restored historic building. Get your shopping shoes on and bring your eagle –eye for a Saturday shopping spree at 3rd Avenue Flea Market. Held every Saturday except holidays, this is the place for the treasure hunter in you. A wide variety of vendors show up at this bonanza of bargains and you can shop both indoor and open air booths for that
prize that calls your name. A fun, family-friendly atmosphere prevails, so bring the kids and teach them about “picking” while they are young. Antiquing is plentiful in downtown Ardmore. Antiques, Etc. was established in 1995 and is a favorite for visitors. Plan to spend some time if you want to see it all because there is a lot to see. Antique malls are always fun because you never know what waits around the next corner and Antiques, Etc, is no exception. Parkway Antiques, is located at 15 Sam Noble Parkway, about a mile away. This large shop has great variety with emphasis on beautiful furniture. The Ardmore Emporium has over 18,000 square feet to peruse with furniture, art, jewelry, clothing, collectibles and home décor. The Pocket Shop, a narrow little boutique tucked in between larger buildings, is full of “delightful finds”, just as the sign says. Unique selections of clothing, jewelry and gift items are available and the store is a joy to shop at. Almost hidden on B St. N.W., a half block north of Main, is The Rage. Well worth the hunt, The Rage is a fun and funky store that carries exciting finds for the teen, young adult and the young-in-style. Stephanie’s Beautique offers a wide selection of sizes in their store. Beautiful pieces of clothing, accessories and jewelry offer superb choices; the friendly, individual customer service makes the experience great. The Threads Clothing Co. is a family venture and is stocked with quality clothing, accessories and shoes for women. The well-made merchandise

is very versatile, works with a variety of styles and appeals to a wide range of ages. Something for everyone! Searching for gifts and décor? Maria’s Garden is a fun place to shop with items for home and garden and boutique clothing. You will find unique container gardens, chimes, birdhouses as well as pottery, local art, home décor and casual clothing. Sitting just next door is the adorable Guest House at Maria’s, a cottage rental for special events, family gatherings or overnight stays. A stop at Key’s Grocery and Quilts will take you back in time. Open since 1943, they stock a line of common goods, gardening supplies & tools, local raw honey and poshofa. The quilting side of the business has just about taken over. Machine quilting is done on site and a full line of supplies can be found. All that shopping is bound to work up an appetite. If you are looking for a peaceful place to take a break, stop at Main Street Coffee for a hot or cold drink and snack. Needing something substantial? Edamame, an American Sushi Bar, has been a big hit with the locals. They also serve sandwiches and entrees. This familyoperated restaurant is ½ block south on B St. If a pizza is more your style, try Ten Star Pizza, with their cracker-thin crust, family recipe sauce and fresh ingredients. Dine in their relaxing family atmosphere. Casa Romo is a family-owned Mexican restaurant serving up authentic dishes. They have a full menu all the time and lunch buffet on weekdays. Red Dirt Brewhouse is one block south on Mill Street and serves up delicious meals, sandwiches & burgers (the usual & unusual), and beer (25 on tap). It’s a fun place to dine and family-friendly. Casa Romo serves up delicious Mexican food, has a full menu and lunch buffet Mon-Thur. You will love spending a little time in downtown Ardmore. Paradise on the Water
Oklahoma“s First Playground Lake Murray State Park is Oklahoma’s first state park. It is named after one of the state’s early governors, William H. “Alfalfa Bill” Murray. The park is home to Tucker Tower Museum, newly renovated and being used to tell the story of the building of the park by C.C.C. and W.P.A workmen. A new Nature Center contains exhibits about the water, natural and cultural history, and green living. The land for Lake Murray State Park was acquired in 1933. Lake Murray Dam was completed in 1937 with Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Projects Administration labor. You can still see the original C.C.C. stone structures scattered around the park. Ranking as Oklahoma’s largest state park, it contains 12,496 lush, wooded acres, has 5,728 surface acres of water, and 150 miles of state-owned shoreline. The lake is a beautiful setting for a variety of activities. Finding fun things to do at Lake Murray State Park is easy. Finding time to do everything might be a problem. Several swimming and picnicking areas are marked and the lake is popular among scuba divers. You will also find a golf course, Lake Murray Lodge & Cabins, and camping. Lake Murray State Park is conveniently located off I-35 at exits 24 or 29. For information, call the park office at 580-223-4044 or for lodging reservations call 580-223-6600. Historic Downtown Ardmore A Main Street City Downtown Ardmore is a must on your visit in the Arbuckles. So many of America’s downtown areas are closing their doors, but Ardmore is thriving and with so much to offer, there is no mystery why. This historic downtown is not only home to specialty shops, antiques and eateries, but also boasts an impressive amount of historical structures, some listed on the National Registry of Historical Places. Shopping is plentiful with a variety of retail stores to peruse. The friendly folks tending shop will be glad to assist you. Strolling downtown, you will find shops with gifts, clothing, antiques, jewelry of all kinds, fresh flowers and gardening supplies, and decor. Should you need a break, enjoy a cup of coffee or iced specialty drink, a brew house beer and burger, fresh pizza or sushi. Walk our brick sidewalks, catch a seat on a shady corner and let life go by at a little slower pace. Downtown Ardmore is just a few minutes east of I-35 at exit 31A. BARGAINS FOR BUYERS Pickers, thrifters, antiquers, junknistas…whatever title you proudly wear, you will find your happy place at the 3rd Avenue Flea Market. Every Saturday (except holidays) the gate swings open to admit treasure hunters of all ages. There are indoors and open air booths, all manned by vendors ready to deal. There is no admission fee so all your green-backs will go towards buying bargains. In this fun, family atmosphere, even the youngest are learning to be pickers. Retro, vintage, re-purposed, antique and pure-de-junk…it is all here and waiting to go home with you. Search their Facebook page for the latest happenings and you will get a sense of the festive mood at 3rd Avenue Flea Market. On their page is a posting that might be called the Bargainista’s Blessing. May the road to the flea market rise up to meet you. May you never leave a good vintage find behind. May the sun shine warm upon you while junking. May your car be loaded down with roadside finds. That pretty much sums it up. The 3rd Avenue Flea Market is located at 3rd Ave NE, downtown Ardmore. (East end of Main St, then 3 blocks north on Caddo St.) Open every Saturday except holidays, 8am – 4pm. Call 580-465-5355 for info.

Call this stuff whatever you want… retro, vintage, repurposed, kitschy, bohemian, industrial… whatever! I load up my girlfriends, we shop for all of this at the Oklahoma Round-up Vintage Market and we call it FUN!!! It is as if Pinterest has come to the Lasso Ranch.
Going to a vintage market is quite an adventure due to the vast array of merchandise. Art, antiques, clothing, crafts…oh my…you just can’t list all of the possible wares the vendors might be peddling. But a huge element of the vintage market experience is the atmosphere. There is almost a carnival feel at the open-air fair, with both vendors and shoppers coming to buy, sell or trade. For the dealers, it is an opportunity to display their passions, skills and

Besides the goods for sale, come for the creativity of the booth decor. The themes are endless… vintage travel trailers, your great aunts living room, farmhouse porch, salvage scrapyard and on and on. For 2016, there are 3 scheduled shows – April 1st-2nd, August 26th-27th & October 28th-29th – with dates for 2017 in the works. Want to be part of the Oklahoma Round-up Vintage Market?
