Generally, the fiber that is ready to be used is sold in different sales points or in the markets of the coast and mountain regions where the craftsmen purchase them. In order to make the hats, the first step is to divide the straw: the finest fibers obtained the best quality the hat will have. manufacturing of these pieces different materials such as wool, cotton and velvet are used. Regarding embroidering, if it is handmade the craftswomen use the stretcher to keep to cloth in place even though many of them prefer to embroide using a machine due to time and cost considerations. towns elaborate all kinds of earrings, rings, brooches, bracelets and chains in gold, silver and other precious metals. For the jewels precious stones such as emeralds, diamonds, opals, aquamarine, topaz, saudas, alexandrias, garnet and pearls are used. Most of the materials are imported from other countries. The filigree technique is definitely the one that attracts the highest attention. This technique is based on obtaining gold and silver threads of different widths in order to cover some spaces and leave some others empty forming a translucent texture. According to some authors, this technique originated in Asia and was subsequently developed in Spain and Portugal, from where it was brought into America by the colony goldsmiths. This technique is used for the manufacturing of the traditional “candongas”, which are the earrings used by the cholas cuencanas (local indigenous women) as an indispensable accessory of the festive clothing. Most of the carpenters work in small shops using traditional tools to elaborate doors, windows, handrails, furniture and all types of decorative objects.
