TO PLAY SIZZLING SET AT MEATSTOCK From Nashville to Bendigo: American Idol winner Chayce Beckham tops Meatstock’s 2024 country lineup WORDS BY

TAMMY WALTERS

Æ Australia’s biggest barbeque and music festival, Meatstock, announces return and roadshow expansion to Bendigo for 2024. 2023 saw a staggering 60,000 meat lovers rotate through the gates of the Toowoomba and Sydney Showgrounds, experiencing the best in barbeque grilling, music and culinary competition. This coming series will kick off in Toowoomba on the weekend of 8 - 10 March 2024, making its way to Bendigo Showgrounds the following weekend of 16 - 17 March 2024 and onto Sydney the next month finishing up on 19 - 21 April 2024.

12

Proudly sponsored by Jack Daniel’s, Better Beer, Heat Beads, and Traeger, the festival centres around the gurus of the grill, with the smell of smoking meats gliding ticket holders through the cookout course. From sticky ribs to beef brisket, Meatstock is both a vegan and vegetarian’s worst nightmare and a carnivore’s haven. The cookout wouldn’t be complete without Butcher and Barbecue Wars, and a Competitive Eating Zone, featuring the sausage sizzle smackdown, burger eating contests and, like the premise of the Sean Evans-hosted Hot Ones, a hot wing challenge.

On the entertainment front, cowboys can brave the professional bull riding ring for a terrifying eight seconds of adrenaline, or physical qualities can be put on show for the Beard and Moe Wars, Mullet Comps, the Dad Bod Contests and ultimate muscle flex, the Strongman and Woman contest. But the real standout of Meatstock is on the mainstage where a lineup of superstar country music artists will sizzle. Headlining the Toowoomba and Bendigo legs is Californian country music star and winner of the 19th season of American Idol, Chayce Beckham. Now living in Nashville, Beckham has become a beloved addition to the US country circuit following in the footsteps of fellow Idol country contestants.

FORTEMAG.COM.AU

“There are a lot of alumni that have come out of the show that have been in country music for a long time. Carrie Underwood is a dominating force in country music. Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery - people like that who have also come from the show and who have made great careers in country music,” Beckham says. “But I do feel like it is that thing where you’re like, ‘Oh, what happened to that person’ or Where did they go?’ Not any of those people, but perhaps other winners. So it just feels good to still be working and still be playing shows and putting out music and seeing that people are listening to the music. That’s the most rewarding feeling as an artist is to put out your work and to have people listen to it and to get to go on tour and see people show up.”

Beckham has just finished an extensive US tour with idol judge and fellow country king, Luke Bryan, a collaboration and friendship that sparked after the show concluded. “I wouldn’t even say it was on the show [that the friendship began]. I think just after I had gone off the show, I had flown to Nashville and then I was looking for management and I had met with Luke’s manager, Kerri Edwards. Then from meeting with her, she called me and asked if I was free one day because Luke wanted to go take me out fishing,” Beckham explains. “That was really the first time I ever got to hang out with Luke for an extended time and offset; not on camera or not in Hollywood. So it was cool getting to just hang out with Luke and get to know him really for the first time. And then we both fished for a couple of days. “I’d say that was where we really got to know each other. We fished together a few more times and got to hang out and he’s become a good friend and a good role model.”

13

The tour came at a time of new music releases for Beckham. After his debut single ‘23’ smashed the iTunes charts in 2021, taking out first place during his idol fame and making show history as the first original song to win the competition, this year the superstar dropped four singles. ‘Till The Day I Die’, ‘Little Less Lonely’ and ‘Whiskey On The Wall’ all started building the story of a debut album, with a drop on 1 December, titled ‘This Ol’ Rodeo’ cementing the plans. Beckham confirms, “I’m in the process of that right now and it’s been an interesting process for me, just because I guess I should have thought it was coming, but I didn’t really see it coming when they asked me to do [an album]. So it was kind of one of those things where I was not caught off guard, but just a little nervous making and writing your debut album and putting something together and picking songs and writing songs. It’s a whole process. So I got to experience that this year and then hopefully we’ll be announcing stuff about that project soon. “But right now we’re still in the works of it but it’s been an awesome experience getting to write and build a project from scratch. It came together really nicely and I’m excited to put a name on it and put it out for the world.” The upcoming album draws from all crevasses of Beckham’s background, including the almost-fatal car accident he was in two weeks before entering the life-changing American Idol experience. Beckham made the effort to deep dive into the sorrow, the joy and everything in between. “I wanted to touch on everything that I feel like an album should touch on, which should be a full journey of pain and happiness and suffering and joy and there should be songs that touch on everything in between. You just draw from real places and stuff that makes you feel something and I can honestly say every song on there is a song that made me feel something and that’s why we picked them,” he says.

“Whenever you’re picking from 30 or 40 songs and you have to boil it down to a dozen or 15 songs, that’s a really hard process and it’s cool to think that we had that many songs to work with and whatever we got is what everybody thinks it’s the absolute best of all those. So that’s what we want to do; just put out the best music possible for everybody. If it were up to me, we would just release everything, but you know that costs a lot of money. So I think that that whole process of writing from past experiences and picking out songs from past experiences and then pulling them all together in a pot and trying to pick the cream of the crop really gave us an awesome project to work with.”

Chayce Beckham is hopeful that the album will emerge before his Meatstock appearance, his first time to Australia and on a lengthy flight. “I never thought that I’d be able to tour the entire United States and get to go to Canada and play in Mexico so getting to come to Australia, it’s a first and when we got the opportunity everybody was very excited to go. We’re really excited to be coming down,” he says.

“It’s my goal to grow and change, I never want to make the same record twice.

FANNY LUMSDEN The Australian trailblazer with a golden touch WORDS BY

TALIA RINALDO

Æ With a profound dedication to storytelling that transcends mere lyrics, Australian artist Fanny Lumsden stands as a true luminary, weaving an enchanting tapestry of triumph and vulnerability in her latest masterpiece, Hey Dawn. Beyond the melodies, this trailblazer has earned an ARIA award for Best Country Album (presented by Dolly Parton), charting at number one for Australian albums, and her magnum opus clinched four nominations at the CMAA Golden Guitar Awards – a testament to the alchemical fusion of soul-stirring narratives and arresting compositions. “Incredibly grateful for all the support we have received this year, these songs are stories that have wound their own way, and your connection to them has been the most rewarding part,” Lumsden shared following her recent accolades. A labour of love and passion, Hey Dawn is the result of Lumsden's intensive work to explore the world, themes, and messages within the album. “Essentially it’s exploring how the stories we are told, the ones we tell and the ones we tell ourselves shape us and change colour over time,” Lumsden says of Hey Dawn. “Sonically I wanted each story to feel right (emphasis on the feel). The theme song, opening track/front cover song ‘Hey Dawn’ was a moment I had in the recording process where it all came together, I got up one morning whilst recording and as the sun slipped over the horizon I said to it ‘Hey dawn’ and from that moment on I was a lot more present and accepting that the place I was in, the person I am right now and the stories I have to tell are the right ones for this moment. Don’t think it. Just feel it.”

14

Described as her most sonically diverse offering yet, Lumsden fearlessly incorporates different musical elements while staying true to her acoustic songwriting style, rooted in her gut feelings and intuition. “I am excited to explore,” she says, “and I don’t feel like instrumentation should be limited due to what genre you have been put in. We made decisions based on each song, each story, and focused on what was the best way to portray them through sound.” Alongside her regular bandmates – husband Dan on bass, brother Tom on backing vocals, Josh Schubert on drums, and multi-instrumentalists Benjamin Corbett and Paddy Montgomery, Hey Dawn also features collaborative efforts from outside musicians, such as EVEN’s Ash Naylor, who brought an iconic Australian sound to the album with his electric guitar on ‘When I Die’. Telling detail-rich stories, both her own, and other people’s, Hey Dawn is the follow-up to her previous album Fallow, an effort which garnered ARIA Awards, Golden Guitar Awards, and AIR Awards. The album debuted at #10 on the all-genre ARIA charts, reaching #1 on the Country ARIA charts for two consecutive weeks, and was named Best Country Album at the 2020 ARIA Awards and sweeping the field with five CMAA Golden Guitar Awards, including Album of the Year and Female Artist of the Year. Despite a swathe of impressive accolades, Lumsden hasn’t wavered; she continues to evolve as an artist, with Hey Dawn now standing as her most complete offering to date. “It’s my goal to grow and change, I never want to make the same record twice. It’s also objective, but I think thematically I have grown and songwriting-wise, I can only hope that people still connect with the stories I’m telling,” she says, “But if they don’t, that’s got to be okay because I made a distinct choice to keep exploring.” Fearlessly embracing growth and change, Lumsden continues to explore her musical journey in new and exciting ways. She recently achieved a career highlight as she graced the stage at Glastonbury Festival. “It was nuts. The festival itself is so overwhelming in its size and scope,” she says. “The experience of performing was incredible and I’m not sure what I imagined but it wasn’t a packed out tent of people doing the DIG dance that we made up in a Bowls Club of rural NSW and them all singing along. Was a career highlight, to say the least.” With the album now adorned with the golden laurels of success, Lumsden will continue taking to the stage with upcoming performances at the likes of Torquay’s Nightjar, Tamworth Country Music Festival, Port Fairy Folk Festival and Meatstock in Bendigo, sharing her stories and songs with real people in live audiences. “Touring is my favourite thing,” she enthuses, “there’s just something magic about the whole thing.” “I love the connection of playing live. I love seeing people’s faces,” she shares, “as we all go through this experience together. We tell stories, make jokes, sing songs, and dance together. It’s that up close person-to-person interaction that I love.”

Arriving with its first regional concert back in July, Sofar has since been honing in on its tradition of filling rooms with attentive audiences seeking to discover new music, delivering intimate concert experiences like never before.

At the helm of this musical odyssey is local singer-songwriter Rach Brennan, the Show Experience Lead for Sofar Sounds. With a passion for creating spaces where music matters, Rach brings a fresh perspective to the Geelong music scene. “The decision to expand Sofar Sounds to Geelong was driven by the city’s vibrant cultural scene and our desire to bring our unique music experiences to more regions in Australia,” Rach explains. “Geelong, with its eclectic mix of urban and artistic flair, seemed like a perfect fit for the Sofar model of intimate and surprising gigs. This expansion is a part of our broader plan to make live music more accessible and extraordinary, spreading across various cities in Australia. “Our goal is to bring together musicians and music lovers, presenting secret lineups that are specially curated for the intended audience and space,” she adds. “Our events are centred around music and connection. Think community, music discovery, unique venues and spaces, cosy blankets and (of course) fairy lights!” Sofar’s arrival is not just a concert; it’s an invitation to indulge in two or three short sets from incredible performers spanning all musical genres, with the occasional splash of spoken word, comedy, or dance. Each lineup is meticulously curated by Sofar’s artist booking team, ensuring a diverse and varied experience, but the real thrill of it all begins once tickets are secured. “While you’ll know the neighbourhood of the gig, you won’t find out the exact location until 36 hours before the event,” she reveals. “You might find yourself in a brewery, a tattoo parlour, someone’s backyard, or your favourite local café.” The Sofar crew, composed of local artists and musicians, adds a personal touch to the experience. Rach emphasises the importance of inclusive and accessible venues, creating an environment where everyone feels welcome.

“I think Sofar creates a safe space for artists to be vulnerable,” she shares. “Having an attentive audience allows the artist to share their music either stripped back or as originally intended, which is a truly captivating experience.” Having already delivered several shows across the region, in Geelong, Ocean Grove and Torquay, Rach details the meticulous process of curating diverse lineups, showcasing both emerging and established acts across different styles. The Geelong music scene, overflowing with talent, presents the delightful challenge of choosing from a pool of exceptional artists. Amid this musical journey, Sofar will introduce a new initiative with Jam Nights, a platform for local artists to improvise and collaborate. The first Jam Night will take place in Geelong at a secret location on 23 December, featuring talented Saxophonist, guitarist, singer and loop artist Shmoné and their band, who will perform before encouraging other artists to join them on stage to improvise and jam together. “It’s going to be such a great way to finish the year, a real celebration and collaboration of local artists and a show that audiences don’t want to miss,” she teases. Sofar Sounds is not just about live experiences; it’s a holistic ecosystem. Rach unveils the digital content and artist services that extend beyond the stage. Online performances, interviews, and exclusive content provide additional platforms for exposure and development, bridging the gap between live events. “Beyond live shows, Sofar provides a range of digital content and artist services that contribute significantly to our ecosystem. We also run a residency in London - providing an opportunity for emerging Australian artists to live and play shows for a month in one of our biggest cities,” Rach explains. “For artists, these services offer additional platforms for exposure and development, while audiences get to enjoy and discover music beyond the live events themselves.” With secret gigs set to continue unfolding across Geelong, Rach and the Sofar crew are on a mission to make this more than just a concert. It’s a movement, a celebration of music, community, and discovery.

CHRONICLES OF A DIAMOND:

BLACK PUMAS SHINE BRIGHT WORDS BY

ALEX CALLAN

Æ On Chronicles of a Diamond, Black Pumas really had something to prove, facing the challenge of following up their 2019 seven-time Grammy-nominated debut album Black Pumas, which catapulted them to the status of one of today’s hottest touring acts in the world. So, as you can imagine, there was a lot of pressure when the Austin-based soul rock outfit got into the studio to record album number two. “We all felt the pressure,” states the group’s lead singer, Eric Burton. “I know I felt the pressure. But I think it did give me solace to learn that everyone in the band was experiencing these heights for the first time. And so while we had and have a healthy level of confidence in ourselves individually, there was quite a bit of pressure to reciprocate something we felt proud of ourselves.” Pressure, however, breeds diamonds, and on the aptly-named Chronicles of a Diamond, Black Pumas demonstrated once again that they’re no one-trick ponies.

Traversing the unknown, Burton reflects, “It was no small feat for us as a duo traversing the unknown. But we have the confidence of having a great band and such a brilliant place to start in Adrian Quesada. And his ability, in conjunction with some of my songwriting that I’ve been able to bring to the table, made it that much easier for us to explore new terrain.” The writing process for this album was heavily influenced by an unrelenting tour schedule. Burton shares, “We wrote a lot of the vibe, and what you hear on this new record, during every off time that we had on the road and during soundchecks. “But I think it works to our strength, to write some of the music and allow the ideas to be initiated on the road. You get to hear a lot of what was in the moment of just being out on tour and the excitement that came with all of that. “And being able to play those songs live before finishing them in the studio definitely influenced the way we concluded what you would hear on the record.”

This trait is evident upon listening to Chronicles of a Diamond; in particular when it comes around to the swaggering ‘Rock and Roll’, a kaleidoscopic yet slow-burning closer that melds aspects of soul alongside psychedelia and rock n roll to create a soaring masterpiece in the albums closing moments. Burton reveals, “While we hadn’t performed that song live yet, I do believe that there was a sense of excitability that implored that idea out of us. “‘Rock and Roll’ was an idea that came from maybe a few months prior, where we were doing a show in Texas, and 15 minutes before the show I was inspired and kind of captured three chords and a melody, as well as the title of the song, which I recorded on a voice memo. Then we find ourselves in Amsterdam, where that idea just made complete sense to bring to life. It just felt fitting during that time. “We’ve been really lucky to have played songs that are on the new album for audiences while we were touring because we got to know how people would respond to them.” Discussing the added difficulties of writing on the road, Burton notes, “We’re a band that doesn’t stop writing ideas. We’re just always working, which I think is really a part of our secret sauce. Like we’re always working without any necessary direction in mind outside of just being inspired individually. “I think the main challenge for me was communicating my own ideas in a way that someone like Adrian Quesada could palette himself to embellish upon for a concluded piece. “So I think that it’s been an interesting journey to be able to meet each other where we are at, to then add to what we are building together in ways that are supportive of the next person.” As the group embarks on a sold-out national tour in America, Aussie fans may have to wait a bit longer to witness the greatness of a Black Pumas live set. Burton cheekily confirms, “Australia is definitely at the top of my list of places that I would like to go and share some of my art and as well as learn from the culture. It just seems like a lot of fun there. So hopefully we can encourage management to get on top of that soon.”

41-year-old, mum or award-winning independent musician? In the Pink EP, Ainslie Wills is all of the above. WORDS BY

LUCY CROCK

Æ Pink is Ainslie Wills in her element – powerful vocals nestled safely behind a piano. In the self-produced four-song EP, released 24 November, Wills strips sonically and lyrically down to her most authentic self. A four-time APRA ‘Song of the Year’ nominee and a two-time ‘Australian Music Prize’ nominee, Wills has garnered global admiration by supporting renowned artists like Hiatus Kaiyote, Leon Bridges, Michael Kiwankua, Lianne La Havas, and Vance Joy. With 30 million online streams and a devoted following, she's become a cherished figure in the Australian music scene. She has featured in Rolling Stone, NME, Line of Best Fit, The Guardian, Frankie Mag, RUSSH, Vogue, Marie Clare, Pilerats, ABC, triple j’s Like A Version, and more. But, as if unphased her own musical genius, Wills is a self-described ‘41-year-old-mother, independent musician, mentor, and collaborator’. “The EP marks the beginning of this time of coming back to my musical roots,” Wills states. The Melbournian artist describes the work as ‘an ode to coming back to oneself’. “It’s me being able to focus on what's important, which is hitting that emotional mark within each song.” Wills' emotionally charged vocals layer over a rich, warm piano, occasionally accompanied by strings, drums, and a pedal steel. “It's really limited in terms of extra textures,” Wills says. “Not to dismiss what I was doing before, but… now I'm coming back to this feeling of… I want to feel like what I'm doing is enough without all of that.” “These songs stand by themselves.” Wills produced the EP, co-engineering it with long-time friend and producer Jono Steer. Lucas Levin, Madeleine Jevons, Anna Pokorny Ioana Tache played strings on the EP, with Shane Reilly on the pedal steel, Brett Langsford on bass and drum sounds by Danny McKenna and Leigh Fisher. “I feel privileged that people want to listen to my music. “But then you think of your life in a broader way and think… well, if you're not enjoying those moments, what are you doing that for?” Reflecting on her journey in her early 40s, Wills turned music into her full-time career, surrounded by a small passionate team. “Charlotte, my manager, really gave me confidence to do the things that I've done. She's really helped me focus on the thing that's most important which is enjoying life.” It was this decision to be present in life that led Wills to move to Macedon, where she wrote, recorded, and produced Pink. “Just before I [wrote] the EP… I was ebbing for a while in life. I was constantly coming back to this feeling of, ‘am I in the right spot? Does this feel like it should?’ “Then realising that I had a choice to change my reality. “Everything just fell into place really beautifully and I haven't been questioning where I'm at. I found a sense of flow in life again, and that flow... back into my creative process.”

17

Pink was written amidst significant life-altering changes for Wills, leading her to this newfound balance. “The EP itself marks the transition, I went through a major turning point in my life; the ending of a really long-term relationship. [I was] having all this unravelling happen, while writing an EP…. lockdowns, and then falling in love again.” “Then I had a baby two years ago and so it felt like life has just sped up.” In striving to honour the significance, and sacredness of these changes, Wills intentionally wrote the EP to be more narrative-driven than previous works. In each song rich vocals and intentionally sparse instrumentation give the lyrics a piercing clarity: There was love in our mistakes, so let’s try to celebrate. I want to only see the good. “If you've been through breakups before, it's easy to just go, ‘oh, that was shit. I want to wipe the slate clean and just start again’. “But I still wanted to see that we did all these amazing things together; we wrote music together; we travelled the world together; there was a lot of care and love that went into our relationship.” Wills also tied in universal experience and empathy towards other’s stories. “‘Eyes On Me’ is an ode to falling in love again and that experience is a universal one. And wanting to honour that feeling of falling in love.” “‘People Pleaser’ is definitely about me going, ‘you know I see what you're, or what this person's, trying to do; trying to keep everyone happy… at the expense of their own experience’. “Until you reach the actual other side of realising ‘Oh, I don't have to do that anymore’, and I don't have to apologise for putting my own needs first.” You won't believe what's on the other side I'm going to meet you on the other side. “That’s imploring other people that identify… to let that go if they can. “It's such a liberating feeling.”

Set to take place on Friday, January 26, from 12 noon to 5 pm, artists will deliver riveting 20-minute sets within the framework of a ‘battle of the bands’ competition. Participants will vie for a chance to win cash prizes, with $500 going to the winner and $250 each for two deserving runners-up. Additionally, the triumphant artists will be featured in our February print edition. To sweeten the deal, the winner earns the coveted opportunity to perform on the Festival of Sails main stage in 2025. The announcement of the winner and runners-up will take place from the RGYC main stage on the same day. Judging criteria encompass originality, songwriting/arrangement, vocals, performance, and overall likability. As for eligibility, the competition welcomes a diverse array of original artists performing solo or as duos, spanning all genres. No gender, gender identity, or age restrictions apply. Last year’s winner was 27-year-old singer-songwriter Jacqui Lumsden from Warrnambool, who has since launched her debut EP ‘Enthusiasm’ and embarked on a successful tour across Sydney, Melbourne, Geelong, and her hometown Warrnambool. Jacqui is set to grace the main stage at the Festival of Sails at 2.30 pm on Saturday, January 27. For those contemplating entry, Jacqui has some advice: “To anyone who’s thinking about entering, I’d say just do it. New opportunity, new audience and who knows, you might even win it!”

Applications are open now. All you need to do is submit your name, contact details and a link to socials or website to Geelong Entertainment before 15 January 2024.

SYDNEY’S GOLDEN AGE CINEMA TEAM REVIVE LORNE THEATRE Æ This summer, the Lorne Theatre, a retro coastal gem and one of Victoria’s oldest cinemas, is set for a revival. The creative minds behind Sydney’s Golden Age Cinema & Bar and Melbourne’s Rooftop Cinema are injecting new life into this beloved venue, promising an exciting program of summer screenings. Brothers Barrie, Bob, and Chris Barton have taken over the reins of this heritage-listed theatre. After temporarily closing, the Lorne Theatre has reopened with a pop-up summer season before an extensive restoration and refurbishment in collaboration with Heritage Victoria. The restoration, scheduled for late 2024, will introduce significant changes, including a licensed bar, an Art Deco-inspired interior design, improved seating, lighting, acoustics, and more. Since 1937, the 550-seat Lorne Theatre has been a local icon, holding a special place in the hearts of generations. The Barton brothers aim to preserve its charm, with Chris Barton stating, “Our plans are not to reinvent the wheel, but to add some love and polish and restore the Lorne Theatre to its original splendour.” The Barton brothers, originally from Geelong, bring their ‘social cinema’ approach to Lorne, emphasising curated programming and an enhanced hospitality experience. Running now until Easter, the theatre is showcasing a lineup of contemporary and classic films, special series, and live performances. Highlights include Christmas classics like Love Actually and The Nightmare Before Christmas; Paul King’s Wonka; and Calypte, a film that follows one of the most celebrated surfers in the world, Torren Martyn, as he sails the ocean in search of waves. Chris explains, “It has always been a special place for us, and we’re deeply aware of the space this building holds in the hearts of generations of local and visiting movie lovers. This shared personal history with the space is why we jumped at this opportunity.” Programming guidance comes from Kate Jinx, Director of Programming at Golden Age Cinema, and Cinema Manager Jessa Shields, adding her expertise from Palace Cinema Como and Golden Age Cinema & Bar. The good old days are now.

ANDRÉ 3000

SUPER AMERICAN EAGLE

Super American Eagle Æ Considering Super American Eagle is made up of Brent DeBoer of The Dandy Warhols, Dave Mudie from the Courtney Barnett band and Bob Harrow of Immigrant Union, they could have easily established themselves amongst the ‘super-group’ crowd with the release of their self-titled debut album. Instead, the veteran rockers are doing things legitimately. Just like any Melbourne/Naarm-based up-and-comer, they're launching the album with a show at the Old Bar. It’s quite an admirable move. All three musicians have worked hard over the past few decades to establish solid reputations within the music world, so why wouldn’t they market their new project to pre-established fans of their previous groups? Because, with Super American Eagle, they don’t need to. The group’s debut is a strong enough album to establish fans in its own right. Super American Eagle is thrilling. Think Mudhoney fuzz, Hot Lunch groove and Truckfighters grunt, mixed with the punk energy of C.O.F.F.I.N and Stiff Richards. It’s absolute bedlam. From the first chords of ‘Yes’, you’ll find yourself headbanging with a rhythmic ferocity that could easily strain your neck muscles. The track, delivered alongside a super-taught, pocket-hugging groove, it’s an opener that grabs your attention effortlessly. ‘Shit’s A Thing’ maintains the energy with its sloppy punk two-step rhythms, bleeding guitar solos and breakneck percussion, reminiscent of a modern and raw Deep Purple. However, Super American Eagle isn’t just about high-octane balls-to-the-wall punkrock energy. Sure, ‘Youf Uck’ is precisely that, but in other moments, ‘Gone’ delivers a day-trippin’ fuzz excursion into the ether, playing with psychedelic dissonance and drawnout walls of droning distortion. ‘Trampling’ detours into a world of Supergrass-inspired power-pop that sees the group exploring acoustic guitars and hook-driven melodies. Meanwhile, ‘Mark of the Beast’ leans into sludgy, psych riffs, impressively slowing down the tempo while amping up the heaviness. The standout moment for Super American Eagle arrives with the closer, ‘Mac’. An eight-minute trip that delves even more hypnotics as the trio balances soaring guitar solos and driving basslines with harrowing vocal murmurs and psychedelic hums of didgeridoo. It serves as a perfect culmination to quite a striking debut. Sure, Super American Eagle may well be the most seasoned up-and-comers the Melbourne/Naarm music scene has encountered in some time. However, that hasn’t stopped them from offering up an album that marks a complete change of pace for all three musicians and the Melbourne music scene as a whole. Super American Eagle isn’t just an album that surprises; it’s an invigorating take on punk-rock that’ll undoubtedly set the modern rock world alight. LABEL: RELEASE:

CHEERSQUAD RECORDS & TAPES OUT NOW

Æ Known for his role in shaping Outkast's legacy, André Benjamin, or André 3000, has been hailed as one of the greatest rappers of all time, a title endorsed by outlets like Complex magazine and even Eminem, who famously ranked him alongside rap legends in ‘Til I Collapse’. Since Outkast's split in the mid-2000s, Benjamin has kept a low profile, making occasional appearances for guest features or production credits in the years since. For over 15 years, fans have clamoured for an André 3000 solo album, and their wish has finally been granted. However, the unexpected twist is that Benjamin's debut solo effort, New Blue Sun, is an immersive instrumental flute album, deliberately distancing itself from his Outkast roots. It's a bold move, acknowledged by the album's opening track, titled, "I Swear, I Really Wanted To Make A ‘Rap’ Album But This Is Literally The Way The Wind Blew Me This Time." The title seems apt, given the meditative 'wind-blowing' soundscapes prevalent throughout the album. However, it's not jazz like Benjamin's work on ATLiens, or soulful like Speakerboxxx. Instead, it's a collection of stray flute tones, with the majority of the release avoiding conventional melody or musical structure. Undoubtedly a bold departure, it may resonate strongly with the die-hard loyalists. However, for many listeners, New Blue Sun might evoke a unique ambience, akin to a contemplative space, rather than the familiar vibe of an André 3000 album.

AESPA

Drama – The 4th Mini Album

Æ For some reason, K-pop is deemed as a ‘guilty pleasure’ within Australia. Its fanbase is astronomical, but yet as a genre, it still struggles to find its way onto Aussie radio stations. This is largely thanks to the misconception that as a whole, K-pop is just cheesy, over-produced cash-grabs. Truth is, it's far from that. As the iconic Korean rapper and producer Teddy Park pointed out in the Blackpink documentary, Light Up The Sky, “What even is K-pop? The only thing is the language.” He's spot on, and Aespa's latest drop, Drama - The 4th Mini Album, solidifies this. Beyond the fact that the quartet belts out lyrics in Korean, you'd hardly peg it as a typical K-pop release. The title track, ‘Drama’, delivers beats reminiscent of M.I.A’s ‘Bad Girls’, intertwining heavy rap choruses with infectiously sung beat drops. ‘Trick or Treat’ ventures into industrially tinged alt-rap beats, in a way that evokes representations of tension and mania. Meanwhile, ‘Don’t Blink’ leans into soulful harmonies and ‘90s R&B aesthetic. It’s a release that will appeal to fans of any era of pop music, not just K-pop fanatics. Evidently, it already has, with the EP’s closing track, ‘Better Things’, clocking in at 40 million streams on Spotify alone. To put that in perspective, at the time of writing this review, that’s as many streams as Dua Lipa’s ‘Houdini’ and The Kid Laroi’s ‘Bleed’ combined. No joke, the K-pop fanbase is a force to be reckoned with. Perhaps it's high time Australian listeners explore what all the hype is about.

AITCH

Lost Files

The Urge Will Pass

Æ Christmas has come early for Aitch fans, thanks to the unexpected drop of the British rapper’s EP, Lost Files, to close out the year. And, as anticipated, it’s a release made up entirely of previously ‘lost files’ that never saw the light of day until now. However, Lost Files is much more than a haphazard collection of B-sides. In this EP, Aitch returns to his roots, channelling hard-hitting grime beats reminiscent of the ones that propelled him to stardom on projects like the Polaris EP. This time, however, it’s delivered with a celestial flair, infusing the majority of the EP with spaced-out g-funk beats that hark back to the ATLiens era of Outkast – but with a distinctive chav edge. Now, that might aggravate rap purists. A modern-day rapper embracing a sound that ties in with the classics of the 90s, while still maintaining individuality? It sounds preposterous, but Aitch pulls it off effortlessly. Much of this success can be attributed to his old-school delivery and flow. It's authentic rap that doesn't rely on mumbling or overly complex wordplay; instead, the 23-year-old drives his point home through sharp, observational, and tongue-in-cheek lyricism. As heard in ‘Landslide’, where he quips “I don’t sell crack, I’ve got bigger rocks”. It’s a clear nod that Aitch isn’t conforming to the tried-and-true formulas of American rappers, and it shows. From the organs and N.E.R.D-esque funk grooves of ‘Boyfriend’, to the change-up of PLK’s bilingual lyricism and distinct Latin flavours on ‘Heist’, the EP marks a significant change for Aitch and the modern rap scene as a whole. Once again, it underscores the upstart's individualistic style.

Æ I don’t know who it was that broke Gabby Steel’s heart but thank you. If it wasn’t for you, we probably wouldn’t have been gifted The Urge Will Pass, and that would have been a travesty. Born out of painful life experiences, debilitating self-perceptions and the power that comes with embracing oneself, The Urge Will Pass showcases local talent Gabby Steel in her most authentic and vulnerable state. ‘It's You, Not Me’ kicks off feeling like it's right in the middle of a heated argument. Steel's voice oozes sass, cheek, and defiance as she delves into a past breakup, eventually realising that she was never the issue. Through powerful quotes, Steel confronts being labelled as "pretty good for a girl" or "pretty for a fat chick" before proudly declaring, "you can take me or leave me, I don't care," in the song's evocative gospel-infused crescendo. ‘Internalise’ on the other hand, conceals its dark lyrical content behind sonically vibrant soundscapes reminiscent of 90s Nelly Furtardo or early Sandi Thom. ‘Feel It With Me’ showcases Steel's knack for folk balladry, while the sombre, piano-driven ‘Sometimes It's Better To Lie’ explores inspired string arrangements and emotive melodies as Steel reflects on a past friendship. The Urge Will Pass isn’t just another good local release; it’s a stellar EP that firmly establishes Gabby Steel as a powerhouse songwriter. Let's hope it finally brings her the attention she's long deserved.

MAVS GREEK RESTAURANT Mavs has emerged as the third-best Greek restaurant and family dining spot in the country. Æ Geelong’s gastronomic hotspot, Mavs Greek Restaurant, is basking in the glory of not one but two Bronze Excellence Awards from the prestigious 2023 Restaurant & Catering Hostplus National Awards for Excellence. In a fierce culinary battle that spanned the entire nation, Mavs emerged as the third-best Greek restaurant and family dining spot in the country. Earlier this year, Mavs Greek Restaurant, once again asserted its dominance as the premier Greek dining spot in Victoria and Tasmania. Situated in Geelong’s chic West End precinct on Little Malop Street, Mavs has become a cherished local treasure over its six years of operation, captivating the palates of both residents and visitors with its delectable Mediterranean offerings. Securing the coveted titles of Best Greek Restaurant (for the second year in a row) and Best Family Dining in Victoria and Tasmania earlier this year, Mavs proudly represented the region on the national stage in Sydney on 20 November. Going headto-head with the crème de la crème of eateries from around the country, Mavs clinched the Bronze in both categories (remarkably achieving Bronze in the national Greek Restaurant Category for the second time), firmly establishing itself as a culinary force to be reckoned with. Mavs isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a culinary journey through the heart of Greece without leaving the vibrant streets of Geelong. From the family name Mavromoustakos, meaning ‘black moustache,’ Milton Mavromoustakos and his wife Julia Ryabova have transformed Mavs into a local haven, offering mouthwatering dishes crafted from locally sourced, homemade ingredients. These awards are a testament to Mavs’ commitment to delivering uncomplicated yet flawlessly executed Greek fare, complemented by a tempting beverage selection, inviting ambience, and warm, efficient service. A visit to Mavs isn’t just a meal; it’s an invitation to adopt a permanent Mediterranean diet, right in the heart of Geelong. As part of their ongoing culinary conquest, Mavs has extended its influence with a Souva Bar in Grovedale and a LoukouMadness Greek desserts haven on Little Malop Street in recent years. Excitingly, another Souva Bar and restaurant is set to grace Drysdale soon, promising to bring the authentic taste of Greek gastronomy to even more eager palates. MAVS GREEK RESTAURANT WHERE: OPEN:

BARWON EDGE

MONA CICCHETTI BAR

The riverside gem reimagined by the ALMA and Felix team

The team behind Che Vuoi brings Venetian cicchetti to Wallington

Æ Barwon Edge, the cherished riverside destination in Geelong, has undergone a stunning transformation, thanks to the culinary prowess of the ALMA and Felix team. This dynamic quartet, renowned for ALMA’s South American charm and Felix’s elegance, has breathed new life into the iconic Barwon Edge Boathouse, establishing it as one of the region’s most splendid dining experiences. The journey begins with ALMA’s debut in 2017, followed by the launch of Felix in 2021. Now, the team brings refinement, timelessness, and beauty to Barwon Edge, introducing two distinct offerings to Geelong. The first is a refined restaurant and events space that opened in September, offering a distinguished menu, edgy styling, and exceptional service. The larger space retains the magic of ALMA and Felix with an opulent suburban twist. Barwon Edge welcomes guests with a luxurious atmosphere featuring custom furniture, oak finishes, and floor-to-ceiling windows framing the picturesque Barwon River. Immerse yourself in the Middle Eastern-inspired cuisine showcased through family-style sharing plates and traditional ingredients. The menu, a fusion of Middle Eastern spices and locally sourced produce, includes delights like slow-cooked lamb shoulder, crispy fried chicken, and oven-roasted market fish. Desserts, such as caramelised filo with chocolate and macadamia, promise pure indulgence. The restaurant also boasts an impressive drinks selection, featuring creative cocktails, beers on tap, and a curated collection of Australian and international wines. Open for dinner Thursday to Monday and lunch on Saturdays and Sundays, Barwon Edge promises a culinary journey like no other. The second offering, set to open in December, is a casual, family-friendly eatery with a relaxed atmosphere, ideal for laid-back catch-ups or family outings. It ensures the same high-quality dining experience in a more relaxed setting. Barwon Edge is more than a restaurant; it’s a destination redefined by the ALMA and Felix team. Experience exceptional food, inviting ambience, and warm hospitality on the banks of the Barwon River. A new era has begun at Barwon Edge, and you won’t want to miss a moment.

Æ In the heart of Wallington, Mona Cicchetti Bar - from the brains behind Barwon Head’s Che Vuoi - captures the essence of Italian tradition, offering an authentic wine bar experience that tantalises taste buds. Cicchetti, small bites originating from Venice, take centre stage at Mona. These delectable, bite-sized treats, found in traditional Venetian bars known as bacari, include crostini, sandwiches, fried seafood, and marinated vegetables, providing a culinary journey through Italy. Located at 420A Wallington Road, the venue, formerly The Paddock Cafe, has been revamped into a stunning tribute to this Venetian way of life. Embracing the tradition of Cicchetti pairing with a glass of wine or “ombra,” Mona invites guests to connect, converse, and immerse themselves in the Italian experience. The menu features an array of Cicchetti, including vegetarian, meat, and seafood options. Think olive marinate, burrata, pizza fritta, double-cooked potatoes, calamari fritti, housemade meatballs, and saltimbocca – chicken skewers wrapped with guanciale and sage. Taglieri, regional meat and cheese boards, add to the authentic Italian experience. It’s one of the best ways to experience local cuisine in Italy, and now in Wallington too. Desserts include crostata della Nonna and Affogato, featuring Frangelico, vanilla ice cream, and espresso. The impressive wine list and cocktail selection complement the Cicchetti experience, providing a delightful accompaniment to the culinary offerings. With a beautiful deck and terrace primed for summer sipping and a cosy fireplace for the winter, come hungry, come thirsty, and come as you are to experience the taste of Italy at Mona Cicchetti Bar.

VALHALLA BREWHALL WILDFIRE CRAFT BBQ Geelong’s newest craft brewery takes the stage

Geelong’s home of slow-cooked, highquality Texas-style barbecued meat

Æ Geelong’s beer scene just got a major upgrade, thanks to the opening of Valhalla Brewhall in the iconic Federal Mills location in North Geelong. The Federal Mills site, known for its creative hub and hospitality, is now home to Valhalla’s impressive 1500-litre brewhouse, capable of producing up to 500,000 litres of beer annually. This is a game-changer for the local brewing scene, with Valhalla Brewhall positioned to become a prominent destination for beer enthusiasts and locals alike. For those planning a visit, the brewery offers a unique experience. The taproom boasts a 200-person capacity and with 16 taps pouring a variety of fresh and local beers made right there on-site. From crisp and refreshing lagers to hoppy IPAs and rich stouts, there’s a beer to suit every palate. And if you’re feeling peckish, opt for a delicious, cheesy freshly baked pizza from local pop-up Tillage Pizza - the perfect snack to accompany your pint. While a prominent destination for beer lovers with the vast brewing tanks on show, the brewhouse is complemented by a range of ciders, wines, and spirits, ensuring that no one goes thirsty. Plus, the free pool table and jukebox guarantee entertainment from noon until closing time, Tuesday through Sunday. But Valhalla Brewhall is not just a brewery; it’s a haven for music lovers too. Local legends from rock, blues, soul, and folk roots will grace the stage inside, providing the perfect backdrop to a night out with friends or a casual evening with a pint and a slice. The original venue, Valhalla Brewing & Taproom in Union Street, will continue its operations in Geelong’s CBD, maintaining its established presence in the city, having just celebrated its fifth birthday. The new Brewhall is set to add another layer of vibrancy to the area, offering a unique space for functions, work gatherings, or casual meet-ups with friends. So whether you’re planning a midweek pint, a Friday night out, or a lazy Sunday afternoon, Valhalla Brewhall has you covered. Skål!

Æ Discover Geelong’s hidden gem for Texas-style craft BBQ at Wildfire Craft BBQ on Watsons Road. With a “No Rules, No Tradition, Just Good Barbecue” motto, Casey and Eliza bring their passion for high-quality smoked meats to life. Starting as a pop-up in 2018, taking to car parks and pubs, they registered a kitchen from their garage in Armstrong Creek during the pandemic, which changed the game for Wildfire Craft BBQ, selling out most days. Wildfire Craft BBQ found its permanent home with a storefront in July 2021, focusing on top-notch smoked meats sourced from Lara Quality Meats. With a menu crafted entirely from scratch, highlights include the Texas Brisket, Lamb Ribs, Eliza’s honey butter cornbread, and the irresistible Pork Belly Burnt Ends - a weekly sellout. There’s also a range of mouth-watering burgers that are to die for. If you’re dining with a group, Wildfire offers the Pitmaster platter, which feeds 3-4 people and features a generous amount of barbecued variety – and all BBQ packs come with pickles and handmade tallow bread – how can you pass this up? As for what’s in the BBQ packs, choose from Texas Brisket, Garlic Butter Chicken, Pulled Pork, handmade sausage and Peking Duk. Seating only 20, Wildfire offers a cosy atmosphere, with a takeaway option for those who want to savour the goodness at home. Using blue gumwood from Royale Firewood, every dish is prepared with dedication, taking 12-14 hours to smoke and keeping the team on their toes. Don’t miss the mouth-watering sides, including Smokey Mac n Cheese, garlic fried rice, and truffle slaw. And, of course, indulge in the unique sauces – Carolina gold, smoked hot sauce, and black ketchup garlic. Get ready to level up the experience too as Wildfire awaits its upcoming liquor license, promising craft beer, wine, and frozen margaritas to complement your barbecue feast. With everything made with love and dedication, Wildfire Craft BBQ guarantees an unforgettable dining experience. Open Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm to 7 pm, and Sunday from 11 am to 2:30 pm or until sold out – because good barbecue knows no rules!
