Where would any of us be ± bands, music lovers, and functioning alcoholics alike ± without venues like The Oldie. All of the talent and great music in the world (and believe me, a large portion of that talent resides right here in Melbourne) is worth nothing without venues to house it in, and The Old Bar is a shining example of that done right. Seven days a week you’ll find some of our city’s finest working their magic. That’s worth celebrating. The Oldie’s Decade of Dickhead mini-festival is set to do exactly that. Hot tip: you won’t want to miss the acts that are taking to the stage for it. Anyway, onwards and upwards. This issue comes loaded with a few other tasty surprises for you to cast your eyes over, including a new festival that’s taking over Melbourne’s west, a chat with celebrated songwriter Kimbra, local legend Emilee South, and a word from Pharoahe Monch ± the man behind hip hop’s most ominous hornline. If you’re anything like me, you might be at a loss for activities that don’t involve being at the pub. But hey, that’s alright. We’ve got you covered. Case in point, our special on indoor activities that’ll keep you out of the rain and into some good times. Whether you’re into rock climbing or glitter gluing, it’s all there. Righto. Good chat. Let’s do it again next week.

Elton John Reveals Only Victorian Show Sir Elton John will perform a special outdoor concert in reaction to the overwhelming demand for his already-announced tour dates. “The demand was too great to ignore. The response when we went on sale was over the top ± Elton’s shows sold out in minutes,” said the tour’s promoter Michael Chugg. John has previously played A Day on the Green in 2015, with the event going down in history as a major highlight for those who were lucky enough to witness it. It all goes down Sunday October 1, Rochford Wines, Yarra Valley. Tickets via A Day on the Green.
Muse
Alanis Morissette
Pre-eminent English rock outfit Muse just locked in a trip Down Under. Their 2017 Australian tour will be their first since 2013 when they made the trip off the back of their sixth album The 2nd Law. On that occasion, their production crew consisted of 140 members, 26 equipment trucks, bomb-sized pyrotechnics and a 333kg robot ± bringing together one of the most sophisticated live arrangements ever seen. Who knows what’s in store this time round. Muse come to Rod Laver Arena on Monday December 18. General ticks on sale from Thursday August 10 via Frontier Touring.
Prolific singer/songwriter and ‘90s sensation Alanis Morissette will return to Australia for two exclusive shows, making her way to Melbourne for an intimate performance. Since 1995 and the release of her seminal debut Jagged Little Pill, Morissette has secured nine Grammy Award nominations as well as winning five Album of the Year awards. The career-spanning sets will dive deep into her lauded songbook, encompassing tracks from Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, Under Rug Swept, So-Called Chaos, Flavours Of Entanglement, and more. She’ll hit the Palais Theatre on Tuesday January 23. Tickets via Chugg Entertainment.

Iconic Aussie act Regurgitator will be joining them, working through their genre-defying discography for a hotly anticipated live set. NYE on the Hill goes down from Saturday December 30 until Monday January 1 on The Farm, 95 minutes from Melbourne. Tickets via the event’s website.
Marking their fifth tour of the country, Future Of The Left will once again make their way around Australia in support of their latest release, The Peace and Truce of Future of the Left. Winning over hordes of punters at Meredith, Golden Plains and Falls Festival as well as a string of sold out shows behind them, their forthcoming tour is expected to do the same. They’ll hit the Corner on Sunday January 14. Tickets via Handsome Tours.

King Parrot: When The Whip Comes Down
How much pain would you endure for your art? Ask Melbourne metal merchants King Parrot’s singer Matt Young, about his experience during the sex-shop themed video shoot for their new single Ten Pounds of Shit In A Five Pound Bag. Young tells Industry “There was a moment there when I was tied up with a ball gag in my mouth. One of the mistresses was whipping my arse and it was really red raw. I’d never had my ass whipped like that. Because I had the ball gag in I couldn’t speak, only drool and moan, and I honestly believe that after she’d finished my arse was bleeding. Nobody helped me, everyone just laughed. I felt humiliated and defeated, and I loved every second of it.” The track is off their Ugly Produce album, out via EVP Recordings on Friday September 22.
Aussie Music Biz Works On Gender Imbalance
The gender imbalance in the Australian music industry was at the forefront in the past week. It was discussed at the Contemporary Music Roundtable in Sydney where an outcome was that an advisory group will be made up of key names and associations to address the issue, and be adequately financed to do so. This was one of the recommendations of the Skipping A Beat study by the University of Sydney Business School which found “chronic gender equality” in the music biz. Key findings are that 45% of qualified musicians and music students are women but make up just one-fifth of APRA membership. It also found that male musicians are paid more, dominate festival bills, feature more on the triple j’s Hottest 100 and win more awards. Only 28% of “senior and strategic roles in key industry organisations” are held by women. Additionally, women are underrepresented on the boards of all national industry peak bodies and are completely absent from the ARIA and AIR boards. Other recommendations made by Skipping A Beat were to gather more industry data based on gender, install “gender equality” as a criteria for funding, increase in the proportion of women in decision-making positions, and make inclusivity and representation core industry values (through initiatives including training programs).
Another study Australian Women Screen Composers: Career Barriers And Pathways, commissioned by APRA AMCOS found that 67% of female composers thought gender discrimination was rife in the industry (compared to 32% of men) and 50% believed their gender affected their careers (compared to 1% of men). 75% of women thought the screen composer sector was dominated by men (only 44% of men thought so) despite the fact that 42% of female composers had formal training in it compared to 15% of male composers. To address their findings, APRA AMCOS has set up a target of doubling female membership in three years, and that 40% of presenters and performers at its awards, workshops and member events will be female. External APRA music grants will be given to applications which show 40% of female participation. At last week’s SXSW meet and greet in Sydney, it was revealed during a Q&A that only 32% of Australian delegates are female.
123 Agency Adds Wharves
Melbourne-based 123 Agency’s newest roster addition is Wharves, from NSW coastal town Lennox Head. The postpunk band got the opening spot on Splendour In The Grass via triple j Unearthed, and put in such a performance that saw 123 founder Damian Costin ± who was in the crowd ± later taking a brisk walk backstage. 123 is putting them on the road behind new single Man You Want Me to Be for six dates in spring, which lands at the Grace Darling on Thursday September 14.

Electronic Machinedrum
The Prince of Wales hotel, that wraps the corners of Fitzroy and Acland Street, has been an iconic Melbourne venue for years. Their striking Art Deco front and pulsing bandroom (turn to page 15 to check out what’s pulsing this week) always seems to reel us to the bay night after night, weekend after weekend. The dining experience at POW Kitchen has provided just another reason to join the fam. The restaurant by executive chef Daniel Hawkins serves Southern Asian flavours at reasonable prices and pretty cocktails to go with. Rumours are their kung pao chicken is a must, although personally my heart beats for their crispy fish fillet with pineapple and chilli paired with a pineapple express cocktail of plantation rums, pineapple, passionfruit and blood orange. So what, I’ve gone a little pineapple crazy? A scene hanging out in this beautiful building, eating sweet fruits and drinks, while the bay breeze runs through your hair, is a scene I will always head down for.
This Thursday August 10, The Operatives crew are back at Section 8 for another installment of The Drop, This time featuring North Carolina producer Machinedrum. The veteran bass, footwork and everything-in-between beatmaker has released a couple of singles this year; U Better and What Is This, both with a more a more accessible melodyinfluenced sound than some of his classics ± an extension of the sound on his 2016 album Human Energy. Surprisingly, this is a free show. It’s not very often you can catch a pioneer of the beat-making scene with a profile like Machinedrum for free, so get in early. Local support comes from Beatrice and residents JPS, Rintrah and Nam. Kicks off at 6pm.

Hip Hop Ali The Great
It’s been a minute since Ali the Great graced us with his witty lyrics and rapid-fire rhymes. Luckily, the Brisbane rapper’s absence signalled he was back in the studio, working on something better than ever. The result is the release of a remarkable double single, with side-A rap track Foreign Objects and the slower, avant-garde side-B single Flowers. Ali the Great showcases his intimidating, furious flow against the eccentric boom-bap beat on Foreign Objects. Ali delivers his sharp lyrics with raw authenticity. The track’s explosive chorus is followed by a powerful guest verse from William Su’a Latu, making side-A an impressive piece of work. On the flipside is Flowers. Unconventional and off-centre, the second single is an experimental blend of sounds that accentuate Ali’s intense lyricism and rhythmic delivery. Astro Travellers
Black Merlin
Just a tad further down Hawthorn way and we find Shanklin Cafe ± a fun and energetic coffee house and eatery, whose honesty compliments any morning perfectly. Created by two friends and masters of the hospitality industry, the eatery focuses on delivering simple, signature dishes with simple flares ± like oat porridge but with black chia and cinnamon, or scrambled eggs but with wilted spinach and mint. I recommend taking your time in this space while catching up with family, friends, or yourself over a big cup of coffee.
On Friday at Hugs&Kisses, Common Ground and Club D’érange have teamed up to present UK techno synth wizard Black Merlin. Having released music on a slightly bizarre variety of labels in recent times including Island Of The Gods, ESP Institute, Omnidisc, Boyznoise, Jealous God and World Unknown?, the producer’s sound ranges from introspective ambient washes to blood-pumping electro. His latest EP Proto World showcases a mastery of tension, waves of noise and rhythm you’d expect to find in the darkest corners of Berghain. On board for the ride are locals Cutting Room performing live and Millú. Crooked Letter
Seeing as you’ve gone right around Melbourne in this column, you must, and I mean absolutely must, head down to Richmond as soon as you finish this paragraph to visit Hector’s Deli. Their sandwiches ± crafted by Attica and Stokehouse trained masters ± go down as the only meals I promise to elicit tears upon completion. The Deli, located in Buckingham Street, Richmond, has not only unfairly raised my expectations of sandwich from this point onward in life, but has also made my mornings a tad more stressful ± selling out so fast they’ve seen me rushing around like a crazy woman to experience their rarity. Is it a Wagyu Pastrami sandwich you dream of ? A Trout Bagel you rather? Or just a simple cup of coffee to sip on and watch the crowds flood in and out? Whatever you desire, I promise the experience will be a highlight never to be forgetten. 20 BEAT.COM.AU
On Saturday, The Operatives crew are back again, this time for the second Bad Opera event showcasing local neosoul, hip hop and modern RnB acts at Howler. This one features Crooked Letter, DeAndre Brackensick, Janeva, Jordan Dennis, Nasty Mars, Rini and Shümba with Kali Brooke on the main stage and Jade Zoe, DJ Mrs. Wallace, Sean Deans, Sadiva and Tentendo keeping things warm in the garden. A solid and diverse variety of talent here, all deserving of far more exposure. The last Bad Opera went absolutely nuts, so get amongst it, kicks off at 7pm.
Local rap fans will be familiar with Ali the Great from Brisbane collective Astro Travellers, a seven-piece hip hop act that won the 2016 Urban category for their song Move Actively at the Queensland Music Awards. Last year the band was awarded the Hilltop Hoods Initiative Award, and Ali independently released his project Mango, a follow-up to his EP Earth. It’s an exciting time to watch Ali’s evolution as a songwriter and beat-maker, with Foreign Objects/Flowers the start of a string of singles due to be released over the coming year. UV Boi
Hip hop producer UV Boi has dropped his latest track All I Want featuring Villette and announced a national headline tour to celebrate this forthcoming EP Returned Alone. UV Boi is one of the best local producers in the game, with his own distinct signature style that’s evident in All I Want. Filled with 808s, layered synths and mighty trumpets, UV Boi’s production is amplified by Villette’s heavenly vocals. The Returned Alone EP is set for release Friday August 29. You can catch UV Boi at his Melbourne show at the Gasometer Hotel on Saturday 7 October. Melbourne rapper Dex will be celebrating the release of his new single 4am featuring Allday, with a national tour. There will be an all ages show at Wrangler Studios on Saturday September 2 with special guests Boy Graduate and Kid Cosmo. An 18+ show will take place at Boney on Friday September 8, with appearances from Dos Boy and Brandon Stone. Already making waves in the local hip hop scene at only 18 years old, it’s undeniable that Dex has what it takes to reach the top.

Hey Mammoth
Another week, another battle of the bands ± in fact, there are three this week. First off, Moyne FReeZA presents Push Start Event with six top-notch acts on the lineup. Hey Mammoth, Altered Minds, Tiosay Joy, Orlana and Mamoko, Dream Season and Three Wheels will be performing to make your Friday even better (plus entry is free). This event goes down Friday August 11 at St. Pat’s Hall, Port Fairy, from 6pm. On the very same night we’ve got Hobson’s Bay Battle of the Bands at The Substation, Newport. Did you manage to catch Plaza-trg play at The Push Pop-Up Shop a few weeks ago? Don’t worry if you didn’t, these cuties will be playing at Hobson’s Bay Battle of the Bands alongside Josh and Max, Hollow December, One Sound, Arkadian and Annaliese Rose. The show starts at 6.30pm and entry is $10. Last but not least, it’s time for FReeZA Push Start Competition finale. If you didn’t catch the Push Start Competition heats, you can certainly come to the finals. Trucks, Lethal Sound Division, Good Wives, EMBE, Cassells, Butterfunked and Falling Infinite will be playing. The event goes down on Sunday August 13 at Karova Lounge, Ballarat Central from 2pm. Entry is $10. Kristin Berardi
Are you into jazz? If you are, come down to The Jazzlab, Brunswick to catch soulful singer Kristin Berardi and incredible bassist Sam Anning. Berardi was the support act for Al Jarreau and George Benson at Montreux Jazz Festival 2007. Moreover, Anning has worked with Australian jazz legends such as Allan Browne, Joe Chindamo, Aaron Choulai and many more. This show goes down on Monday August 14 at 8pm. You can purchase tickets at jazzlab.club.
Staunch
Central Coast hardcore band Staunch have announced their break up. After five years as a band, Staunch have announced that their final run of shows in September will be their last for the foreseeable future. “We will play a couple of shows to round off the year but then this band will go on an indefinite hiatus,” says lead singer Mitch. “Thanks to anyone who supported this band in one way or another. It’s been real and without y’all, this whole journey wouldn’t have been as fun as it was.” Staunch’s last shows will be supporting Justice for the Damned on their upcoming national tour, with support from Hindsight and Honest Crooks. Catch ‘em all at their all ages show at Phoenix Youth Centre on Sunday September 24.
Late last week, Trivium released a new track, The Sin And The Sentence, and it’s a monster. Trivium are one of those bands who had to overcome a fair amount of flack early in their career. When they signed to Roadrunner Records in 2004, frontman Matt Heafy was only 18 years old. There’s always a bit of scepticism in the metal community when a band hits so young ± is it just a marketing thing? Are they really even playing their instruments? Will they have a lasting career or is this just another flash-in-the-pan thing? But Trivium have managed to survive and evolve, and whether you’re into them or not, they can teach us a lot about the metal scene in general, and how to maintain a loyal audience.
The Bronx
Long-running Los Angeles skate punks Pennywise have announced a national tour to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their seminal 1997 album Full Circle. Performing the album in its entirety for the first time, the band will be joined by fellow LA punk rockers and crowd favourites The Bronx, who’ll be touring their fifth album V. The bands will play at The Forum on Friday October 27. Tickets are on sale now. Founding Sex Pistols bassist and songwriter Glen Matlock has announced a national solo tour. Known for writing Pistols classics such as God Save the Queen and Anarchy in the UK, Matlock was kicked out of the band prior to the release of their debut album allegedly because he admitted that he liked The Beatles. Glen Matlock and his band will play The Yarraville Club on Saturday November 18. Tickets are on sale now.
It’s a cliché, but no band would be where they are without their fans. Trivium has done a great job of taking notice of local fan-run fan clubs and making sure they feel the love. Just check out the Trivium Mexico Twitter feed for a great example. Everyone in the band takes time to interact with these fan accounts and to make their fans feel involved in their success. If you’re in a band, take note of your loudest supporters: hook them up with the odd ticket or backstage pass, do a shoutout on your social media, let them know you care. Metal is goofy. We all know it. Something Heafy in particular is great at is acknowledging the funny faces he sometimes pulls onstage by asking fans to create memes based on certain pictures. The cynical might say it’s all about brand awareness, getting your face out there and believing all publicity is good publicity. But whether it’s calculated or not, it’s another way the band interacts with its fans and keeps its name and face out there. It also breaks down the barriers a little.
The World Is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die
Hot LP alert: have you heard of Declan McKenna? McKenna is an English singer/songwriter, gaining widespread recognition after winning Glastonbury Festival’s Emerging Talent Competition in 2015. Recently, the 18-year-old released his debut album What Do You Think About The Car? that showcases the most newfangled indie-pop throwback tunes ever. If you’re into the baroque-ish or art pop sounds of Vampire Weekend, you’ll likely find McKenna intriguing. McKenna is one of those sensitive young songwriters; he exhibits deep, thought-provoking lyrical content. McKenna’s very first single Brazil, which he wrote when he was just 15, tackles issue of corruption in the FIFA World Cup. He also discusses the suicide of a transgender teenager on Paracetamol. Moreover, McKenna explores the topic of law enforcement and Black Lives Matter on Isombard. McKenna has played many big festivals, including Glastonbury and Lollapalooza, and will also be playing Leeds Festival and Summer Sonic in Japan. Pretty impressive achievements. 22 BEAT.COM.AU
Long-named emo heavyweights The World Is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die have announced the upcoming release of their third full length album, Always Foreign, following up 2015’s Harmlessness.“When we started writing we were fresh off Trump being elected, so there’s an anger to the album that’s different from what we’ve done in the past,” says vocalist David F Bello of the writing process behind the new album. “There’s a lot more resistance thinking throughout the songsÐn ot in a way that’s strictly anti-Trump, but also addressing things like white supremacy and controlling elements of the state.” Always Foreign is due for release Friday September 29 on Epitaph. Long-running New York hardcore legends Agnostic Front have announced the release of a live album, recorded in 1985 in their home of New York. Entitled NYC Stompin’ Crew: Live in ‘85, the record is available now in Australia from Resist Records.
Social media means bands aren’t as mysterious as they once were. Once upon a time it was all about keeping that mystique and using it to your advantage. Those days are over, so how are you going to build up a ‘universe’ around yourself ? Trivium is great at this. Each album project has its own feel that starts with the music and is augmented by the visual presentation. The perfect example is their album In Waves, the first project where they really built up to its release with teasers, thematically unified videos and a specific aesthetic. As goofy as these guys let themselves appear to be, they’re also deadly serious about their music and its presentation, and they rarely let their sillier side show in their music or videos. Instead they approach them as true art. You can do this whether you’re a headliner, a support act or a local-level band.

“A Decade of Dickhead. And just to make it clear, we’re the dickheads,” says Joel Morrison, gazing around at the interior of The Old Bar. “It’s amazing that three dickheads can run a bar for this long.” It’s only right that Morrison is feeling nostalgic, having ± along with partners Singa Unlayati and Liam Matthews ± held the keys to the iconic Fitzroy watering station and music venue for ten years. During that time, the unlikely trio has transformed the premises into a cultural centre for music in Melbourne’s inner north, a well-loved location that manages to appeal to the local creative community while being completely bereft of any superfluous trappings. Dimly lit without being dingy, relaxed while remaining professional, one suspects that much of the bar’s personality is inherited directly from its owners. “This was always one of my favourite bars, so when it came up we decided to snatch it up,” Morrison says. “Both me and Liam come from a music background, so we really wanted to focus on the bands and make it the best place possible for bands to play and for punters to enjoy it. We’ve put a lot of work into it and I’d say it’s definitely reflective of us. “Running a venue like this, you’re almost like a custodian of the place, you’re not exactly an owner. It’s like the punters and the bands make it as much theirs as you do. So you find out what works and what doesn’t work and then run it along a similar line. If you’re pushing a certain agenda of your own and it doesn’t wash with the crowd, then you’ll see that it won’t work.” Under the watch of Morrison, Matthews and Unlayati, The Old Bar has hosted a mammoth amount of bands, with several well-known acts cutting their teeth in the cosy confines of the bandroom. “King Gizz, Courtney Barnett, Wil Wagner and The Smith Street Band have done residencies,” Morrison says. “Cash Savage still plays here lots, Graveyard Train, Brothers Grimm. There have been so many shows. There have been at least nine shows a week for ten years. “There was times when we first started when there was no PA ± it was just the vocal PA onstage and the bands used to mix themselves. There wasn’t even a stage, it was just a tiny little step. You’d see these amazing bands who’d have to mix themselves, which was pretty incredible.”
Morrison also books the bands personally, ensuring a consistency that is unusual in a venue of the bar’s size, no matter the genre of act or night of the week. “There’s got to be a level of quality for playing The Old Bar, whether you’re a new band or a band that’s been around for 20 years,” he says. “It is, in terms of the bands that play here, shooting a bit higher than the venue can hold, which is why we get bands that probably shouldn’t be playing these small rooms, but do anyway just because of the reputation of the joint. “That is all down to the crowd and the staff looking after the joint. A lot of punters will walk in and feel like this is their home. And that’s what we want, we wanted people to feel like they have as much ownership of the venue as we do.” Morrison, Matthews and Unlayati will be celebrating their anniversary of proprietorship with a week-long run of secret shows, the lineups of which won’t be revealed until the day of the event. There’ll be over 30 bands playing, with gigs running every night of the week as well as during the afternoon on the Saturday and all day Sunday. “It’s massive and it’s going to kill me. I’m ten years older now, I can’t drink every night of the week,” Morrison says. “I’ve called in a lot of favours. There’s people that have played here from the very first year, there’s people that have played here from the very first week, there’s people that just started playing here last year. But pretty much every single person has something to do with The Old Bar, has a history here. “We pretty much got everyone that we wanted, so that was really great, and a lot of these bands, as I said, shouldn’t be playing here. But they were gracious enough to say yes and I was amazed at how readily people came on board for this stupid idea,” Morrison says. “It’s going to be pretty interesting to see people’s reactions. Every night’s a pretty good mix, so you’re going to see at least ± there’s four to five bands every night, apart from the Sunday which has like ten ± at least half of it you’re going to love, if not all of it.”
“A lot of punters will walk in and feel like this is their home. And that’s what we want, we wanted people to feel like they have as much ownership of the venue as we do.”
The Old Bar will celebrate with A Decade Of Dickhead, running from Monday August 14 - Sunday August 20. Secret lineups will be announced daily through The Old Bar and Beat.

Due West: Immersive Arts Festival
“There’s a number of events that are run in traditional art settings, and then others that are more offbeat – squares and laneways, and that sort of thing.”
Due West: Immersive Arts Festival is the City of Maribyrnong’s brand new showcase for local creatives, organisations and venues, uniting art lovers and the communityminded alike. Zoe Bayer from event production and PR agency The Background assures that it’s been a busy few months getting the interactive spectacular off the ground. “It has been lots of work to get it to the point where it’s at now, which we’re excited about,” Bayer says. “It’s been a big collaboration, obviously, with the number of different arts organisations in the west, so [we’re] delivering something that is a true reflection of the arts culture here.” With over 50 events and a range of different artistic outlets, Due West is a plethora of unique nomadic delights spread out across Melbourne’s western suburbs. As creative directors of the festival, The Background sought “opportunities to move around this area that we call home, and explore it in different ways”. “We created the creative direction for it in terms of it being an immersive arts festival, so it encourages people to engage and participate across a number of art disciplines and also bases itself in the west,” says Bayer. “There’s a number of events that are run in traditional art settings, and then others that are more offbeat – squares and laneways, and that sort of thing.” A good example of Due West’s one-of-a-kind nature is The Night Circus, a moving performance across three iconic Footscray sites. Complete
with aerial performers, a power house troupe of idiosyncratic circus women and a factory site next door alive with a choir, you can have a go yourself afterward with an adult’s pop-up circus workshop. Over at Maddern Square, you’ll find TenMinute Dance Parties, where you’ll step inside a container and party hard in a highly-theatrical spectacle. It coincides with Art Of Fighting, where you’ll get to meet local boxing identities, dip boxing gloves in paint and punch your craft onto a canvas. “We had a really good response,” Bayer says. “We set out an EOI process, and we also spoke to a number of different leading arts organisations within the west. They were all so keen to get on board, and really excited about an opportunity to showcase this area. I think a lot of people in the west are very proud of [their neighborhood]. It’s a really nice opportunity to partner with some of these organisations – and artists in general – to give them a platform to showcase their work.”
With most of the events free, Due West hopes to be an opportunity for everyone to experience something new, be it those who experience the diverse world arts on a regular basis, a family looking for a great night out or someone just wanting to see a cabaret show for very first time. Already equipped with a broad palette of the unique and wonderful, the future of Due West looks bright to Beyer. “We would like to see it grow and grow, and have an opportunity to have great collaboration and planning for ongoing, really, really special events,” Bayer continues. “Bringing in new things and working on collaborations with the local community. It really is something that we want to be of interest to obviously people outside the City Of Maribyrnong, but also, as an event for locals made by locals.”
Due West: An Immersive Arts Festival runs from Thursday August 10 - Sunday August 27 in and around the City of Maribyrnong. More details via duewestfestival.com.au.

The Real and Imagined History of The Elephant Man The phrase has been passed down from generation to generation, but surprisingly not everyone is across the fact that “the Elephant Man” was a real, living person. Born Joseph Merrick, his story has been told so much across literature, stage and screen that it’s almost become myth. With The Real and Imagined History of The Elephant Man, director Matthew Lutton and writer Tom Wright delve further into that mythology; focusing properly on Merrick’s personal life and envisioning a bigger picture to what has been shown to audiences in the past. “It’s funny. I only really discovered Joseph’s story and more about his life when I was in my 20s,” says Daniel Monks, who will be playing the titular role in the production. “I started working on him as a character around 2014, well before I was ever even asked to play the role. I just loved the character and I found myself really invested in it. My only issue was that, as much as I loved the story, I felt that there were problematic elements in previous adaptations of The Elephant Man for the stage. They were always told with Dr. [Frederick] Treves [Merrick’s doctor and confidant] as the protagonist – which I understand, given he was the only source material that we have on Joseph. What’s great about this version, though, is the fact that Tom really took the time to focus on what it would have been like for Joseph himself. There’s a bit more freedom there, given it’s both a real and imagined iistory. It really makes Joseph the central focus, rather than 28 BEAT.COM.AU
“We get to explore much more about what the man would have been.” simply a catalyst for the able-bodied characters.” Making his Malthouse Theatre debut, Monks has worked alongside Lutton and Wright to bring a truly unique version of Merrick to the stage. Characters once seen as outliers to the story are brought into focus, and Merrick’s inner psyche is tapped into in a way Monks feels that other versions have never quite done previously. “Through Treves’ retelling of his story, Joseph has always kind of come across the same way in every adaptation,” he says. “He’s meek, he’s gentle, he’s emotional and loving. I don’t deny that this was a part of who he was, and I also don’t deny that’s how Treves would have perceived him. What’s exciting about Real and Imagined History, though, is that we get to explore much more about what the man would have been. We tell his story from age five up to his death at 27, so we really see how this tumultuous journey really came to shape him as he grew up and evolved. I really hope that it’s more engaging for an audience to be able to see a portrayal that’s a bit more complex – a three-dimensional, flawed human; not just a martyr.” Having been partially paralysed since he was 11 years old, Monks – now 28 – has dedicated his
entire career to creating visibility for disabled actors and performers. For him, taking the lead role in Real and Imagined History is both an incredible honour and a positive note of progress. It’s his hope that his portrayal of the Elephant Man is successful – not just on behalf of his hard-working peers in the cast and crew; but on behalf of any disabled people involved with the world of theatre. “I think that this is a really positive step that Malthouse is taking,” Monks says. “I want to help encourage more theatre companies and more theatre writers to be more inclusive in their casting of more people with disabilities. I want disabled people to be able to come to these performances and see themselves on stage, and to have their stories reflected. I really feel as though it will help them through their own struggles, and give them something that I never had when I was growing up. Representation matters – it does have an impact. Having disabled bodies on stage is a really powerful, provocative thing.” By David James Young

Kimbra
After first bursting onto the scene back in 2010, Kimbra Johnson has become a name in music synonymous with innovation. Having collaborated with the likes of Gotye, Janelle Monae, Mark Foster of Foster the People and David Byrne of Talking Heads, it’s clear Johnson is a performer that excites other creatives. Now armed with her most ambitious collaboration to date, Johnson will be bringing a brand new musical ensemble to Melbourne as part of Supersense. “I always think of my musical spirit being like an inner child,” Johnson explains during some down time on her Japanese tour. “I want to keep exposing it to exciting things and for me that’s where improvisation comes in. I usually come to Australia with a full band but for the Supersense show I’m bringing more of an electronic set up. I have two other members of the band but I’m controlling all the beats and doing more of the electronic manipulation.” Improvisation forms an integral part of Johnson’s upcoming show with the Exotech collective, born out of improvised nights spearheaded by Johnson and Supersense curator Sophia Brous, initially sparking this shift in musical production. “Me and Sophia are very interested in live improvisation which is how these nights that I call ‘space jams’ started,” Johnson says. “I’d invite anyone who was a friend of mine to come and jam. We’re talking members of Battles and my friend Thundercat, even the singer Miguel came down for a night.” The collective initially started as a chance for musicians to play improvised sets among friends, but quickly evolved into an exciting musical project in its own right. “It was a mini-experiment,” Johnson says. “Everyone is on an equal playing field and brings ideas to the table. It’s a beautiful experience to both perform and watch. You have to listen so deeply and take risks when you jump in with an idea.”
Soon buzz started to generate around these gatherings, along with a number of exciting opportunities. “We got offered a music residency at the Red Bull studios in New York and got the chance to invite more people down. David Byrne, Questlove who’s a good friend of mine from The Roots, Sean Lennon, Caroline Polachek from Chairlift. It was really this hub of creatives coming together and given the chance to be free and not be chained to a musical idea.” With the project morphing into something of a musical sensation, Johnson is excited to be playing in Melbourne with a renewed focus, particularly so given that the city represents an important part of her career. “Melbourne’s where I wrote my first album Vows and where I got my feet off the ground. I think the crowds will be really expressive at the show because so many of them have probably followed my career from a very early point. “I want it to be a way for people to step into a new way of experiencing the songs that they know, but also showcasing new material that I’ve been working on,” Johnson says. “I’ve always breathed improvisation into
my music when it’s live, if I think of Settle Down, it’s almost like I do a new version every time I play it. I get bored of arrangements really quickly so I want to feel like I’m taking things to new places.” Given that Johnson will be entirely in control when it comes to the sounds heard on stage, there’s clearly very little room for hesitation. “I always need a bit of danger with what I do,” says Johnson. “If it’s completely fool proof then I don’t think I’m as engaged as a performer. I need to feel that things could collapse at any point. You still want to find ways where it can go somewhere you never expected.” Reflecting on the incredible experiences she’s had as a performer, Kimbra is unreservedly humble. “You don’t imagine, especially being a kid from New Zealand, that you would ever see people singing the words. In countries like Japan they don’t even speak English. That never really wears off, even at this stage of my career.”
“I always think of my musical spirit being like an inner child. I want to keep exposing it to exciting things and for me that’s where improvisation comes in.”
Kimbra will perform as part of Supersense at Arts Centre Melbourne on Saturday August 19. Supersense runs at Arts Centre Melbourne from Friday August 18 until Sunday August 20.

Emilee South Local music doesn’t fit the A-list bill much better than Emilee South. With the release of her intoxicating second EP Motel, the Melbourne singer demonstrates massive potential as a throwback rock‘n’roll hotshot. With sultry vocals and smooth guitars, South ± though she’s very humble and laidback about the idea ± undoubtedly has positive reception for her new material coming her way. “It’s hard to gauge but we’ve been getting some great reviews,” South says. “The shows have been really good ± we’ve been touring in cities for the first time and have been well received. It’s quite different to the first EP, a lot more rock‘n’roll, more cohesive.” Cohesive indeed, South’s is the kind of music which on hearing it, you’d be pressed to describe it as otherwise. Throwback rockabilly in style, with a nuance of early ‘60s pop influence, South’s music also carries a quirky 21st century edge that’s hard to put your finger on. “It’s hard for me to describe the style or genre of my music ± I tried consciously to write songs that were just songs, the classic verse, chorus, verse, chorus ± easily digestible with a classic story. “However the music itself, it’s rock’n’roll but not solid rock‘n’roll. As far as the 21st century edge, it’s maybe the content. One of my influences is Patsy Kline, and all her songs were sad and about the men that left her and I was like, ‘Well, that’s not my life,’ so I guess I was more the protagonist in my songwriting.” South has compiled her material into a body of captivating and original work. Soulful, old school rhythm and blues jam, track Old Flame in particular carries a beautiful narrative that allows an emotive response within a very womanly perspective. “These stories, I feel I don’t write songs from my own experiences ± it could be one emotive idea that starts the songwriting process. Old Flame was a build on those two words.”
“I tried consciously to write songs that were just songs, the classic verse, chorus, verse, chorus – easily digestible with a classic story.” While South’s syrup-rich voice compliments her chosen style of music performance fantastically, her natural talents aren’t what captures her attention. With a love for the music of Patsy Kline and Elvis Presley, South was made for this music. “I love the simplicity of that ‘60s pop songwriting,” she says, “I also started out playing guitar before I started singing, I wanted to be a rock‘n’roll guitarist, that’s what I wanted to do when I first started music. I feel this style of music allows me to do that a bit more, I can rock out on the guitar more than just sing, and this style of music really lends itself well to that kind of rhythm guitar.” If rocking out is something that you, like South, have always enjoyed, then you’d be wise to get yourself on down to Live N Local Festival, where in just a few weeks, South is happy to be performing for the first time at the Starward Distillery. “I can’t
wait,” she says. The excited singer will be bringing a full band and backing singers to her performance, with a 12” vinyl of the new EP available. It’s an exciting opportunity and as South agrees, it will be filled with more fun than easy access to whiskey alone will offer. “It’s exciting to be part of an event that Beat is curating, so thank you for having me. “I haven’t seen La Bastard play before so that will be exciting, as well as Sid [O’Neil] from The Vasco Era, very excited to see him on the lineup. Festivals like this, especially local music festivals involving the local community, it’s great there’s still stuff like this happening on the south side of the city. I’m just thrilled to be a part of it, especially the opening night.”
Emilee South will perform as part of Southside Twang and Soul, with La Bastard and Sid O’Neil at Starward Distillery, Port Melbourne on Saturday August 19 as part of Live N Local. Live N Local runs from Saturday August 19 – Saturday August 26 in various venues across the City of Port Phillip.

Warbirds By Peter Hodgson
Warbirds are a Melbourne based power rock trio, consisting of Anth on guitar and lead vocals, Jared on bass and backing vocals and Leroy on drums (they’re so rock that they have no time for last names, apparently). They describe themselves as hard rock, blending heavy groove-based riffs with Melodic-Rock-with-acapital-M-and-R melodies, and their influences range from the modern (The Winery Dogs) to the vintage (Led Zeppelin) to the in-between (Soundgarden). Control is the first track to be released from Warbirds’ forthcoming EP, recorded at Coloursound Studios in Melbourne, and it’s being unveiled with a special show at Cherry Bar in AC/DC Lane. “Initially it was a show that we put together with a couple of other bands,” Anth says. “There was a Pearl Jam tribute night that we’d like to be involved with. We got the call up and we thought we’d add that to our single launch. We’ve got a band opening called The PassOuts, and then, us, then the Pearl Jam Ten tribute, for the 25th anniversary of that album, which will close the night out.” Jared joined Warbirds around December last year, bringing an end to a long period of musical soul-searching. “I had an old, inactive profile on [online forum] Melband, and I’d left the profile up. Leroy came across it and gave it to Anth, who sent me a random Facebook message to say they were looking for a bass player. I liked the sound and the attitude and the three-piece outfit, which gives a bass player a lot of room to move.” “We all fell in love,” Anth interjects. “Love at first riff,” Leroy adds. After a meeting at the Reverence over a few beverages, Warbirds found its dream lineup. “It was a long, painstaking year and a half search,” Leroy says. “We had someone in that we weren’t 100% happy with but we needed to keep the ball rolling. But it was tough, so finding Jared was like a needle in a haystack.”
30 BEAT.COM.AU
But apparently it was meant to be. One day Jared zipped downstairs at the building where he works, and bumped into Leroy. Neither realised they worked for the same company in the same building. Small world, eh? “And he has an awesome Dingwall bass, so we thought ‘Let’s just get him in the fucking band,’” Anth says. “It’s almost like we’re starting from scratch, in a way. We’ve been together in one form or another for about five years but now, with this lineup, it does feel like a rebirth and a new beginning. We feel like a really solid three-piece where everyone is really on board, whereas in the past we’d been juggling everything. “It’s heartbreaking sometimes, when only one third or two thirds of the band are putting their heart into it. This feels really good and we’ll be working on an album within a year.” The band’s plans for the next year or so are based around the ongoing EP project, the first taste of which is Control. “We’ve just finished recording the EP at Coloursound and we’ve finished up the rest of the songs that we’re going to be releasing,” Anth says.“We’re really happy with those, and we’re going to release those one at a time, centred around launch shows for each release.” The band went into the studio planning to record three songs, but they had a few more that they decided to lay down, expecting to need further work on them. They fit so well with the rest of the tracks that they’re now a part of the eventual EP.
From there, the band hopes to head overseas at some point, and is also looking to score some great support slots. Who would be their dream support act? “The Winery Dogs would be it,” Leroy says. “We would have said Soundgarden, but…that’s heartbreaking. But maybe Van Halen or The Tea Party. Tea Party is a band we all really love. Especially as a three-piece, they’re the kind of band that we can relate to. Although we wouldn’t turn down Iron Maiden.”
“It’s almost like we’re starting from scratch, in a way. We’ve been together in one form or another for about five years but now, with this lineup, it does feel like a rebirth and a new beginning.”
Warbirds will play Cherry Bar on Saturday August 19, Whole Lotta Love on Friday August 25, Cherry Bar on Tuesday August 29 and Brunswick Hotel on Saturday September 2.

James Norbert Ivanyi Australia currently has one of the strongest progressive instrumental guitar scenes in the world. Somehow we’ve managed to foster a group of players who each have their own recognisable styles while also working within a specific (if admittedly broad) genre. Plini, I Built The Sky, Jimmy Lardner-Brown, Simon Gardner, each has their own personal spin on what the guitar can be within a heavy context. Add to that list James Norbert Ivanyi. The first thing you’ll notice in Ivanyi’s playing is his appreciation for the entire life of the note. A lot of players seem to be in a perpetual rush to get to the next note. They don’t necessarily know how to begin a note, how to end it and what to do in between. “Thank you for noticing,” Ivanyi says. “I’m really aware of the techniques that one can use to dress up the note. We all have access to the same notes and frets on the guitar, and operating them is the easiest bit. It’s what you do with the note that matters the most. “To me I’m more focused on how I dress that note as opposed to what that note is, so I’ll exploit a range of techniques to get the most out of it according to the interplay with the other notes in the queue. It’s something I think about quite a lot and to this day I spend a lot of time trying to get better at it. A lot of the older-generation players ± and some newer generation players as well ± rely on feel rather than technical prowess. I look at those players for that and I try to emulate that while trying to bring it over into the modern metal context as best as I can. “I use this analogy a lot with students of mine,” Ivanyi continues. “There are players who are great
guitar operators who maybe need to develop their ear a little bit more. It’s like the first time you sit down at a computer keyboard when you’re a kid and it will take you forever to figure out where certain letters are. Then after a while you can blast away without looking at the keyboard. The guitar can be just like that. People can become great at operating it while there’s still something lacking musically. There’s a lot of that due to the accessibility of the guitar these days.” Denalavis is the latest in a series of EPs, each of which is recorded at home with a particularly interesting spin on song creation. “I usually have some kind of influence there to help me in songwriting,” Ivanyi says. “Since I’ve been doing these solo EPs it’s been the cover art. Jeff Richardson does the artwork for my records and I try to musically create whatever it is that the picture is saying to me. I always have a big print-out of it there and I write to the artwork. I
do all the guitar, bass, keys and arrangements, and it’s all a home job. I’m so into Jeff ’s art that I thought it would be really cool to capitalise on how I’m inspired by it, by making music to interpret that instead of internalising it. For the guitar geeks, Ivanyi’s main guitar is a Suhr Antique S, but live he uses a custom-made Modern model. “I designed it to be nice and dumb. It’s very simple but for the road it works very well. It’s the black one that most people have seen. I’ve been recording using the Fractal Audio Axe-Fx for most of my recordings. Out on the road I’ve been using the Fractal AX8, which is basically an Axe-Fx built into a floor unit, and that’s been a dream. I can sling it into the overhead on the plane. It’s nice and easy to use.”
“It’s nothing without the audience. Even when it’s dark and evil and hard, it’s still about making something that people can relate to.”
Twenty years on the scene and Pharoahe Monch’s creative output is consistent and second to none. He is, in short, a lyrical miracle. Always regarded as ahead of his time, the New York MC has enjoyed commercial success through the most humble of recipes.

Pharoahe Monch
“It’s pretty simple,” Monch says. “I’m an artist whose art is so much better ± I don’t think any artist is ever truly satisfied with the last piece. You complete a piece, obtain a novel, at the end of the day, the true artist looks back and thinks he or she could have improved, so that’s how I see it. “Imagination is strong and I think what’s good about time, is that it can also be a journey. I’m experiencing life differently, having great experiences, so much you dream about helps you share content but the technical things, it’s fun to push the envelope.” Monch’s experiences have naturally had an impact on his solo albums and the differences heard in what he’s produced over the years ± diversity in his material, he agrees, only comes from living. “You don’t want to repeat content. I like to challenge myself and the audience appreciates it when you approach music in a way you’re not comfortable with. “You’re pushing yourself, trying out new tactics lyrically, flows, and new content as well. I don’t want to be talking about what I was in my 20s, people want to see you grow.” Growth, both musically and personally, is perhaps most evident in 2007’s release Desire. With this album, Monch took a more soul and gospel direction with his tone and with a historical thirst for exploration across different elements. Not wanting
“It’s like the first time you sit down at a computer keyboard when you’re a kid and it will take you forever to figure out where certain letters are. Then after a while you can blast away without looking.”
to be repetitive, Monch has done his best to retain that mantra with the new album he hopes to release later this year. “I’m in the process of mixing most of the songs, putting in the finishing touches in a way that will bring it all together. I’m torn between telling people what it’s going to sound like, I don’t want to put that picture in to anyone’s mind yet because these are real visual lyrics that I have. “It’s energetic, fresh and it’s the hardest record I’ve ever done. I’m about showing people more than telling people but I know you’ve got to promote. If you’re a fan of hard lyrics and beautiful soundscapes, incredible musicians, live band stuff, that’s me in the next thing ± it’s futuristic.” Monch takes his time to craft his art, and it’s clear he puts a lot of thought into his work. That time has resulted in a body of carefully crafted work over the last 20 years. Contemplating his position in music history is met with some carefully thought out responses. Slowly, thoughtfully, he says, “I’m blessed, fortunate, lucky. “I grew up in hip hop and put together all these songs that would last a long time and get a reaction. That’s a dream come true. Not only do the songs get an amazing reaction, which is insane to me, but
it’s transcended the course of time. Simon Says has withstood all the trends. I’m glad it resonated with the people that support it.” Monch’s long-time Australian supporters will soon see his incredible talent when the rapper embarks on a national tour in September. “I just want to hit the stage hard, with a lot of energy,” says Monch. “I have new music that I believe in. That’s what I like doing, performing new music to see how it resonates with the crowd before I release it. Try the vibe.” Even performing previously untested material on the live stage, Monch says he’s never had any unexpected negativity. “None of it is pretentious ± even the most ridiculous of records where you get into yourself, it’s still about the audience with hip hop, at least, I speak for myself. “It’s about a 360 reaction. If I can get that from the crowd, I’m able to give back even more. It’s nothing without the audience. Even when it’s dark and evil and hard, it’s still about making something that people can relate to.” By Anna Rose
Pharoahe Monch will perform at 170 Russell on Monday September 18.

Crafternoon
Deep Space
Why should we engage in more activity-based socialising? When you create something with friends, you’re not only having a good time together ± you’re improving skills, learning about each other and learning about yourself. What do we get to experience? When you walk in to Crafternoon the first thing you’ll notice is the ceiling ± sky blue with hundreds of floating pieces of art left by past customers. An arts and crafts table is by the door filled with feathers and glitter galore. The floor is a glass sea of pictures with bright, colourful paintings and characters. Our playful, friendly staff will take you to a table and explain the menu, which starts with the craft options. Ordering craft is as simple as ordering breakfast or a coffee. When was Crafternoon born? I saw a need for a place where adults can get in touch with their creativity in an environment they felt comfortable in. I had been working in a corporate environment for many years and felt that I was losing a little bit of myself because I wasn’t being as creative any more. How does Crafternoon foster a sense of community? We definitely go out of our way to be as inclusive as possible and our team plays the biggest part in creating that. Crafternoon is a place where all people from anywhere can come to have a good time together. Our menu includes vegetarian, vegan, halal and gluten free options, we’re wheelchair friendly, child friendly and queer friendly.
How does it work? Deep Space is a 70-minute experiential ‘game’ played by a team of two to four players in an immersive and physical space, where you are literally present in the story world ± a hybrid of a video game, film narrative and escape room. Boasting multiple endings and an Artificial Intelligence who adapts and responds according to the players’ interactions, Deep Space is one immersive journey out of this world. What can one expect to feel when walking out of Deep Space? A great thing about the game is that every group has a unique experience. The narrative changes depending on how you interact. Decisions you make have consequences, similar to a choose-yourown-adventure. Like a novel or film it can evoke a range of feelings ± fear, elation, exhilaration. So it’s hard to know exactly how you’ll feel. All we can assure you is that you’ll have an awesome time. What do we get to experience? You and your friends will find yourselves navigating the engine corridors of a spaceship and completing various puzzles as you try to fix your malfunctioning vessel. You will find yourselves conversing and engaging with the ship’s artificial intelligence, who adapts and responds according to your interactions. Why should we engage in more activity based socialising? In an age of content saturation, modern technology is generally criticised as separating people. Deep Space uses technology to push the boundaries of storytelling, bringing audiences together in a social, interactive experience that challenges their teamwork and opens their mind to something new.

Album of the Week (Interstate40)
Singles With Lachlan Kanoniuk James Hurley’s Just You is stiff to miss out on a review this week. Sorry.
Single of the Week:
Kaiit
Natural Woman (Independent) The greatness of Kaiit is immediate on Natural Woman, but it takes several welcome spins to get even a slight grasp on the facets of brilliance on show. Verses sublimate from jazzy powerhouse into tightly wound rap bars, launching into a feel-amazing chorus. It’s not just reminiscent of The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill, but reminiscent of the very best moments from The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill, while still sounding like a voice that’s Kaiit’s own. The best track to come from Melbourne this year so far. And it will be hard to top from here.
Kelela
LMK (Warp) The devices present on LMK are mostly in line with the makings of top 40 pop, only moments of raw tenderness from Kelela and gnarled darkness from producer Jam City build a barricade to mainstream radio. It’s a potent mood, shunning a within-reach embrace of mainstream radio to achieve the makings of what could be the best bedroom anthem of recent memory.
Total Giovanni
Your Light (Dot Dash/Remote Control) There’s little alteration to the Total Giovanni formula on Your Light, just a subtle refinement of ingredients in the form of more pronounced instrumentation. The band’s innate sense of fun strains a touch under the burden of familiarity, an invitation of comparison to Total Giovanni’s previous, and superior, singles leaves you wanting. The band shine on stage, but nearing three years since Human Animal and Can’t Control Your Love, there’s little in the way of an evolution, let alone revolution, to provide the depth needed for a full-length release.
Black Cab
We really don’t deserve bands like Black Cab. Be it Call Signs’ post-punk interpretation of East Germany or the droning gaze of Games of the XXI Olympiad, they’re tireless when it comes to crafting authentic theatrical atmosphere.
Lowtide
Alibi (Rice Is Nice) Melody billows among the wash in Alibi, almost feeling joyous but retracting just short. It compounds the song’s exploration of being steadily engulfed in emotional languor. There’s quiet devastation in the loudness.

(Akira)
EUROPEAN TOUR SEND OFF W/ HEXDEBT + CULTE + BANANAGUN - ON SALE NOW
Inspired by classic Japanese sci-fi anime movies, Akira will become their flagship example ± a work of genuine passion and integrity. Like the media, Black Cab has meticulously extracted inspiration from classics like Akira, Ghost In the Shell and Neon Genesis Evangelion ± it means something much more below the surface. Japan’s cultural relationship with technology ± the duality of its rich history and culture, forever colliding with emerging new worlds beyond comprehension ± is a unique creative beast to witness, and Black Cab have moulded a poignant and respectful observation that perfectly embodies those works. An ominous atmosphere of dark purity penetrates Akira. It’s a classic anime hyperdrama framed by gentle whispers and a hypnotic, vibrating electronic ambience. If you’re an anime fan, you’ll instantly recognise those repetitive, rolling, turn-of-the-century synth ripples echoing seamlessly against the traditional militant thud of taiko drums. You’ll feel its foreboding patter reverberate in your bones. The sweeping range of the narrative is all here ± the pangs of adrenaline, the journey, the danger, the light ± crafted within an agonisingly nostalgia-soaked realm of warped tape and future dreaming. Daring and bold, Akira not only perfectly represents its inspirational namesake on a technical level, but it transports you to your own original adventure, continuing the distinct imagination and heart that have inspired so many. Truly reinvigorating. By Jacob Colliver

Almost Everything
7.0
Over the span of Almost Anything, Melbourne band Self Talk give newcomers a taste of what they’re all about. Opener Little Song begins with strings that, much like the rest of the song, tease. The song serves as a perfect hook for the rest of the EP. Bedside Dictionary and Old Habits are both solid pop-punk tracks. While they don’t throw listeners off like Little Song, they do feel instantly familiar, and more importantly, exciting. Who doesn’t love a song they can bop their heads along to? Skin is a highlight, and features a staple of pop-punk instrumental breakdowns. For most of the EP, the instruments feel like a platform for frontwoman Stacey Cicivelli’s vocals, but here they’re brought to the forefront. Closer Origami revisits the sounds explored on Little Song. Cicivelli sings, “I’m like origami in your hands,” which is a sentiment we can all relate to. After all, everyone has someone they feel helpless around. Self Talk have found a great balance with this EP. They’re a band that you can relate to, but most importantly, they’re a band you can chuck on and have a dance to. By Ben Madden

Run Kitty Run
8.0
This album opens firing on all cylinders with the pulsating and pounding Ballygunge. The band’s eclecticism is confidently paraded as traditional Bollywood singing styles are melded with pulsing bass parts and vivacious chord strikes. Serving as the soundtrack to a lost film, thematic songs like I Love You Love You paint vivid imagery of a romantic love scene. Comparatively, the album’s namesake, Run Kitty Run, feels like the opening credits to a Bollywood buddy cop film, tinged with playful surf-rock guitars and addictive chorus vocals. Parvyn Kavr Singh’s falsetto vocals, inspired by classical Hindustani styles, delightfully glide over coarse guitar sounds and triumphant horn sections on The Raan of Kutch. Shourav Bhattacharya’s more downplayed vocals act as a perfect subtle contrast to Singh’s exquisitely dramatic vocals on other songs like Mauja. The sounds on the album are truly far-ranging, especially on songs like Zhooti Naina, which melds traditional Indian tabla with cinematic strings and propelling drums, and (Mera Nam Hai) Lucky, which mixes a sitar with synths. This album is a thrilling menagerie of different world sounds mashed into one 12-track experience. It’s not one to miss and is one of the most exciting albums I’ve heard this year.

Paul Kelly
8.5
Life Is Fine
Life Is Fine finds Paul Kelly in classic mode; unlike many of his recent releases this album is a collection of mostly new songs performed with his crack hot live band, without having to conform to any theme other than that. The press notes that accompany the review copy describes one of the songs as being ‘reminiscent of his greatest ‘80s recordings’, and the low down guitar of rocker Rock Out On The Sea does indeed bring to mind the work of Steve Connolly. However, in truth the full band arrangements that come replete with atmospheric organs, female backing vocals and subtle guitar melodies that snake around the vocal line with just a touch of twang are more reminiscent of his recent band albums Stolen Apples and Ways and Means. This is most definitely a good thing, as while Kelly has never sounded unsure of himself by any means, he has certainly matured into his own abilities comfortably, knowing how to use what makes his singing and writing unique, to his advantage. This is a strong collection of mostly upbeat rock/pop songs by a giant in the field; fans will find a lot to love here. By Alex Watts

Manual Override
7.5
Bendigo outfit Fountaineer present an outpouring of Gang of Youths-esque wisdom on Greater City, Greater Love. It’s a throttling, synth-driven portrayal of regional Victoria, but it begins with light keys and a lumbering kick-drum on Sirens (Parts 1&2). With a gripping intro and a Heath Ledger reference, The Cricketers is the heart of the album. Here, Fountaineer are at their resolute best, as Anthony White’s transcendental vocals mesh beautifully with synths, guitars, and drums. This continues into Words with Friends, an upbeat, lively, and jangly summer jam, before taking a sharp turn into a rough guitar lead. Best of both worlds. On almost every song, lines are repeated like mantras, giving Greater City a deeply spiritual feeling. This is clearest on Onomatopoeia, where White makes direct reference to lyrics from the album’s other songs above two lines which are repeated start to finish. It’s a challenging listen, but Some Bright Sparks is the perfect follow-up, with the opening synths evocative of a well-deserved victory lap. This album sounds like it should be tragic, but the lyricism and rising instrumentals render it completely uplifting. Fountaineer are well on their way to becoming one of the biggest acts in the country.
The evolution of Saskwatch has been interesting to observe ± while they started out as a fairly straight-forward take on ‘60s soul, they’ve readjusted their direction, turning their hands to a brand of indie pop with a strong undercurrent of melancholy. Manual Override continues this musical trend, and while it has generally more upbeat songs than 2015’s Sorry I Let It Come Between Us, some of the moments that really stand out are the slower ones. North Terrace is achingly beautiful, arranged with simple layers of melodic guitar lines that bring to mind the xx, while Nkechi Anele’s vocal is devastatingly forlorn. However the album does have plenty of groove ± the fuzz bass and crunchy processed drum sound of Shrinking Violet lend a modern indie pop feel to proceedings, while the dreamy Then There’s You sounds closer to Liam McGorry’s other band, Dorsal Fins, than the soul act that released 2012’s Leave It All Behind. There’s still a certain amount of soul to be found in these simple but effective melodies, but the lean, classic pop structures suggest The Beatles as much as they do The Dap-Kings, while the production shows a certain amount of quirkiness and experimentation that manages to keep things feeling fresh.

The Sand Dollars
I Like The Look Of Your Sweater, Can I Have Your Number?
6.5
This debut EP from the Melbourne indie rockers explores every nook and cranny of the indie genre and then some. This five track EP traverses a range of genre themes with grace. Lead-single Silence Is Gold fuses sizzling post-punk drumbeats with wavering surf-rock guitar sounds. No Cigar is an energetic opener that has the band’s singer, Michael Baini, shouting passionate lyrics. However, the track overstays its welcome by a minute or so. Love Dust features hip hop group True Live on a jarring soul tune. The surprising inclusion is a wonderful hip hop track that features shimmering guitars, funky drums and ferocious saxophone runs. I Need is a slow-burning ballad that has a swaying groove and is a clear EP highlight. The seductive instrumentals blend delightfully with Baini’s rougher but impassioned vocals. The EP’s closer, Chops ends things with a compelling groove and detonating guitar solos. This EP is an exciting glance into what The Sand Dollars could do. As an experimental EP, it considers a great spread of ideas. It may not be cohesive, but it’s definitely promising. By Paul Waxman

Maja
Who are we chatting to and what do you do? You’re chatting to Maja (pronounced My-a) and I’m a soul/folk singer/songwriter. What do you reckon people will say you sound like? My favourite comparison is Amy Winehouse. I hope they still think I sound like her. What do you love about making music? Everything about creating and making music. I love that I can express myself in the way in which I know best and that I’ve always got that emotional outlet if I’m ever in a bad place. I like that you can use whatever you’re feeling to create something beautiful and real. If you could travel back in time and show one of your musical heroes your stuff, who would it be? Probably The Beatles. I was obsessed with them as a teenager, and I would’ve loved to have been alive in the ‘60s. It seemed like such a vibrant musical time. What can a punter expect from your live show? They can expect a lot of honest truths, laughs and humiliating stories about my life. What’ve you got to sell CD-wise? Belle Phoenix
Who are we chatting to and what do you do in the band? I’m a singer/songwriter that goes by the name of Belle Phoenix with Australian band The Subterranean Sea. What do you love about making music? The unfolding journey of the confrontation with being human ± all its vulnerability, strengths, weaknesses and expansion. The challenge of playing guitar. The amazing people you get to meet at shows. Having the opportunity to work with David Bowie’s band-member in New York. What can we expect from a live show? Mostly high-energy, fun performance-art that can include weird and wonderful costumes. The live show has been described as haunting, epic, voodoo and can be a duo, four to eight-piece band with or without string instruments, experimental guitar and soundscapes. What are you doing now? We are awaiting a remix of the album by Mark Plati in New York with gigs being booked in Europe for 2018. We’re wanting to play Aussie festivals and bars.

Taylar Paige
Who are we chatting to and what do you do in the band? Taylar Paige. Singer/songwriter/guitarist/bassist from Melbourne. What do you reckon people will say you sound like? It’s always quite hard to categorize yourself, but if I had to choose I’d probably be a weird mix of The Japanese House, City & Colour, and Amy Winehouse with obvious influences from Puscifer and Tool. All ridiculously diverse artists. What do you love about making music? The process of making music is both an escape and a home; where the mind falls apart only to mend. To say I love this process would be an understatement. I am eternally grateful to have the ability to morph any negative energies that enter my life into art. Harnessing negative energies in the forms of fear, despair and misery and morphing them into pieces of music is simply what gives my life purpose. We’re all just artists trying to paint our own realties, each with our own tools and too, our own vices. What’ve you got to sell CD-wise? My new single Murder is out now. taylarpaige.com

Death Grips
Prince Bandroom, Saturday August 5 The opportunity to catch the elusive and unpredictable Death Grips in Australia is a rare and exciting prospect. The experimental rap trio’s set pushed the performers to their limits and fans to their last drop of sweat, testing how well the Prince Bandroom would survive in an earthquake-like scenario. The setlist was pure, unadulterated Grips ± a selection of highenergy tracks flowing seamlessly into the next with no breaks at all. With hot picks from their whole catalogue, the night was chaos from start to finish ± the kind of night a diehard fan could walk out of and feel wholly satisfied. The first drum beat of Whatever I Want (Fuck Who’s Watching) threw an anticipating crowd into a full floor of stomping, howling demons that physically shook the venue right up to the far back. The dial was turned up to 100 right from the get-go ± the crowd’s unified violence was far more energetic than anything seen at a metal show. Get Got’s heaving beat inspired much the same effect to a sea of flailing arms and heads, gaining more momentum as MC Ride jumped and growled over the stage. The crowd were following his every move, becoming the beast they worshipped. Hot Head’s unadulterated noise-core ethos was a surprisingly welcome addition to the set. Seeing Ride babble in tongues over blasting drums and chaotic samples before shifting back to a tangible rap structure made a lot more sense in a live setting than it did on the album. There was a physical energy on show that created context ± something that couldn’t be captured on recordings. No Love, Inanimate Sensation and Spikes were all outstanding and the crowd, although teetering on the edge of fatigue, still heaved themselves into mosh-mode. Giving Bad People Good Ideas’ grindy blast-beats turned the floor into a circle pit and I’ve Seen Footage swapped the crowd’s cathartic anger into a dance party. By the tail-end of the set, it was evident that the band had given it their all. I Break Mirrors With My Face In The United States had a tired Ride giving it as much as he could but still visibly panting ± although Zach Hill carried the torch while drumming behind him like a sweat-riddled beast. After an entire set that darted away from Exmilitary tracks, Death Grips threw out Guillotine as a closer. All boxes were ticked ± they played something off every album, performed with the insane energy that left the crowd sweaty and disoriented. Couldn’t have asked for a better night. By Tom Brand
Jack Ladder and the Dreamlanders Howler , Friday August 4
A cold night saw a capacity crowd shuffle into Howler’s bandroom for Jack Ladder’s first headline show in Melbourne for a while. With tickets selling out, there was obviously plenty of appetite for the baritone crooner and his cohorts. The air conditioner ensured everyone kept their winter coats on as the gents took the stage in outfits that seemed carefully considered ± vibes from the performers and punters that made me feel as though I was in a nightclub scene from an ‘80s flick. The band kicked off with a new one that led fans on a synthy walk before getting into perhaps Ladder’s most well-known track, Come On Back This Way. It’s classic songwriting that went down well with all. The key board riffs and precise drumming were a big stand out. Ladder’s relaxed stage presence showed his experience but it felt as though he was more focused on wooing his crowd than playing for it. Ladder created vivid stories with his Nick Cave-esque vocals and clever lyrics. He also gave fans a brief moment of humility with stage banter about his real name (and middle name), Tim Kenny Rogers, before getting right back into his Jack Ladder role. The best moments were when the band cut loose, got all discordant and came back together from some kind of organised chaos ± it was when the guys were having the most fun. The set featured plenty of cuts from his 2014 album, Playmates along with a small collection of new tunes. There were melodies reminiscent of Depeche Mode and Talking Heads ± the kind of stuff that makes you want to dance while staring at the ground. New single Susan saw the band bring out a couple of backup singers that added an extra layer to Ladder’s strongest new tune. The main set ended with To Keep And To Be Kept, a studio version that features Sharon Van Etten’s vocals. Ladder’s last bit of crowd chat showed that he genuinely does appreciate his audience ± something that shone through every now and then. When Ladder truly connected, he really hit the mark.
Real Friends
Arrow On Swanston, Friday August 4 Real Friends brought nothing but raw energy to the table for this intimate gig, leaving the crowd craving more. Opening the night were Australian bands Stuck Out, Columbus and Harbours. Each brought their own fire to the stage, and for those who came in not having heard of these talents; safe to say they all went out keen to hear more. From the moment Real Friends took the stage, the crowd was in a frenzy. With this their third trip to Australia, the band certainly appreciated the energy of a young Melbourne crowd. Fans fed off the passionate performance with endless circle pits, crowd surfing and passionate singalongs. Opening the set on a high with killer songs Empty Picture Frames and Colder Quicker, the crowd were straight into it and quick to grab the mic to join in. The intimacy of the room made the high energy of the night even more surreal. The most touching moment of the night came with a meaningful speech from frontman Dan Lambton about his struggle with mental health. He went on to encourage anyone in the audience who is going through some sort of struggle to seek help before finishing the set with Dead, Anchor Down and Mess. Real Friends never fail to deliver show after show. The atmosphere is instantly electrified with their energetic sound and heavy lyrics that hook every listener in. It was certainly an astonishing and fitting ending to an amazing tour. By Holly O’Kelly Highlight: Audience interaction throughout the whole show was so positive. Lowlight: I walked out with many a bruise (but it was worth it).
Crowd Favourite: Lost Boy, every single audience member sang along to this anthem.
By Naj Highlight: Solid rock bass grooves all night.
Lowlight: Howler’s air conditioner set to cold af. Crowd Favourite: Come On Back This Way.
Highlight: Feeling the ground shake of the first mosh. Lowlight: Visibility issues.
Crowd Favourite: The whole set.

Roads of the Future Roads. They’re vital, integral to our everyday existence, but the average person no doubt takes these essential mechanisms for granted. A lot of hard work and effort goes into the maintenance of Australia’s life-blood, with our large land mass offering unique challenges and fulfilling opportunities.
“I think everybody underestimates the value of the road network. It’s the lifeblood of the country.”
A great opportunity to chat with the road community firsthand is at the Australian Asphalt Pavement Association’s ‘Roads of the Future, Embracing The Next Generation’ exhibition. AAPA’s CEO Carlos Rial is excited for this industry-first event, explaining that road construction is a rapidly growing national market. “We’ve seen both the federal and state governments across the country raise funding for essential infrastructure ± which, of course, includes roads,” Rial says. “In Victoria, they’ve put in an extra two billion dollars in particular just last year. We’re really looking to showcase the industry and really trying to attract the best people to come and look at our sector as an employment opportunity for their options. We’re also looking for those that are in the industry who want to up-skill. There’ll be a number of leading education facilities there on the day. In them coming along, too, they have an opportunity to win thousands of dollars worth of training and the like. “Demand is always there for roads,” Rial continues. “Australia’s still developing its road network, so there’s always a lot to be done. We really want to make sure that we get the right people coming into our industry. There’s heaps of demand as far as work goes ± we just want to make sure that we get the right people to do the work.” Searching specifically for local Victorian workers to join the massive industry, Rial notes that they’re not just looking for field operators, but applicants from a huge range of positions, including
(but not limited to) supervisors, project managers, safety officers and contractors. You don’t have to be looking specifically at construction either, with organisations like VicRoads attending ± and you can bring the family, with plenty to entertain the kids including robots to build, giveaways, a jumping castle, big trucks and a BBQ. “We need to look at innovation,” Rial says of the future. “Doing things differently, doing things smarter, which is something that we continuously have to do. Obviously, we have a challenge regarding our population versus our infrastructure that we have sometimes, so we need to invest a lot into doing things smarter. That’s the challenge for the next 20 years.” A prize containing $2,500 worth of AAPA Road Worker Training will be given to someone who attends on the day. There’ll even be international

organisations in attendance, offering the potential to travel worldwide and experience global business. Rial assures that in a multi-billion dollar industry, “I think everybody underestimates the value of the road network,” he says. “It’s the life-blood of the country. It connects people to people, connects people to things, to hospitals and medical services. It drives all the essential goods that go within the country and export. “Roads are what connect us, and making sure that we have a reliable and safe network is essential to just about all of us, who drive on it every day.” By Jacob Colliver
