Would you look at this glorious** weather! Hope you’ve all be soaking up the sunshine, in the most sun-smart way, of course. I’m talking sunscreen, hat, sunnies ± the works. You can thank me later for that little lesson. But enough about the weather, because what we’re really here for is the stories, and boy-oh-boy do we have some rippers. Right up the front, in all their crazy-splendour we’ve got the fabulous Polish Club ± surprise, they’ve just dropped their new EP and we’ve got the scoop. Melbourne Festival is about to wrap up, but not before we tell you how Germinal build the entire universe in a matter of hours and Ella Thompson & Clio Renner take us through the collaborative Like Running Water. Take a look inside The Pleasure Garden, hear from Damien Cowell as he prepares to bring his Disco Machine to Darebin Music Feast and let Psychic Hysteria tell you why the DIY scene is so damn important. What a damn good time!

Review:
An Unorthodox Flow of Images What is it that connects us as humans to photography? Is it the beauty of the image? The significance of the moment? Our experience with the subject? It might be all of those things, and none of them. An Unorthodox Flow Of Images, an exhibition curated by Naomi Cass and Pippa Milne for the Melbourne Festival doesn’t try to answer this, nor does it try to address a single theme or idea. Instead the exhibition elegantly presents 150 still and moving images with vague connections and invites the viewer to come to their own conclusions. Cass and Milne advise in the field guide: “At the core of this exhibition is an attempt to lay bare the way that images inform and seep into everyday life, underpinning the way we see, interpret and understand the world.” The exhibition begins with an image widely understood to be the first Australian press photograph; Body of Joe Byrne, member of the Kelly Gang. The image sits alongside Flagellation of Christ by Piero della Francesca and a photograph of 2014’s Lindt Cafe siege in Sydney, highlighting the variations in how public displays of
suffering and trauma are captured. An Unorthodox Flow of Images also offers opportunities for reflection on the ways an image can be interpreted. The Eunuch, Maree, South Australia has been displayed under several titles throughout its history, all of which convey a different meaning. Whilst a selection of ASIO surveillance images take on a more ominous sub context as a result of the annotations identifying persons of interest. The context is key to why certain images in the exhibition are so compellingMorning Mist, Rock Island Bend, Franklin River, Tasmania is credited with playing a part in the Labour victory in the 1983 federal election and became an iconic embodiment of what might have disappeared. And viewing Masayoshi Sukia’s portrait of David Bowie (which became the cover of his iconic Heroes album) feels even more significant with his recent passing. A true highlight of the exhibition is Andy Guérifs captivating Maestà, The Passion of Christ, a 60 minute video in which the twenty six scenes from Christ’s Passion are restaged. It is impossible to look away-
perhaps due to the fresh approach to such a familiar narrative, or because there are numerous acts taking place simultaneously across the tableau, or maybe because watching actors move furniture from frame to frame setting up for the following scene makes us feel that we have an exclusive, behind the scenes look. Ultimately it is these kind of questions that the exhibition successfully encourages the audience to ask. Showing us that we don’t need to have the answers about what makes imagery compelling to enjoy it, and in fact sometimes it is this mystery that can be its greatest strength. By Nicole Ryan

Am I the last person on this earth to hear about Diawli? India’s Hindu festival of lights that celebrates the triumph of good over evil, where loved ones gather to cleanse for new beginnings, renewed hope and joy? Bear with me I’m not going full hippy on you, but the festival is actually really amazing, and along with chill thoughts, yoga and ridding sins, there’s also dance, music, arts, and – drum roll please – spicy, spicy Indian food. It’s all going down on October 22 and in light of the festival, here are my ultimate Indian eats. First on the list is Mukka; a sweet and humble restaurant originally opening as a stall at the Vic Market some years ago. Their honest service and tasteful North Indian flavour grew so popular within the market that a restaurant to come next was only essential. And a smart move that was, as they now hold their ground as one of Melbourne’s most delicious and true experiences. Mukka was actually the reason I became aware of Diawli as on October 22 they serve their finest treats at the Diwali Yoga & Special Veggie Thali Festival at Edinburgh Gardens. The festival offers cleansing Yoga followed by a special vegetarian Thali lunch at Mukka for just $35. Just bring a mat, towel, and some unwanted baggage to set free.

Having played the likes of Camp Nong, Daydreams, Gaytimes, Strawberry Fields, Rose Quartz Festival in Tassie, World Pride in Toronto and The Great Wall of China Music Festival in Beijing, the globetrotting Jennifer Loveless can be found most weekends bringing her finest aural delights to your favourite Melbourne clubs. She also presents the weekly radio show Weatherall on 87.6 KISS FM. Kicks off at 10pm. Friendships
After something with a little fancier? Then Piquancy is for you. Hawthorn’s much celebrated Indian restaurant explores a variety of Indian flavours and breaks down the reputation of Indian food being heavy and predominately curries and rice. Piquancy – meaning a pleasantly sharp and appetising flavour – amply succeed in doing so with dishes such as yoghurt kebabs, pani puri or cheese dosa. When I dined at Piquancy I loved the Tulsi Seap; basil and lemon marinated scallops with green pea suave and capsicum salsa. I really, really suggest trying this.

On Friday, Club Derange are hosting the second annual Halloween Masquérave Ball (very clever guys) at Hugs&Kisses. On board for the debauchery are the ‘hard as steel cap boots, soft as dust kisses’ beat-makers Friendships doing a live set, alongside selectors Hysteric, Simon TK and old mate Harold. If Friendships’ recent Facebook photo updates are anything to go by, goth-theremin master Miles Brown could possibly be joining them. Or it could just be an old photo Halloween photo they posted because it’s cool. Not sure and I’m not an actual journalist so probably not gonna find out. Either way, you’re in for a pretty good time I reckon. Kicks off at 11pm and you’ll probably want to get there early-ish. Composite Cone
And then there’s something that’s a little less Indian I’ll admit, but a lot more special to me particularly. It’s my local Indian and Nepalese restaurant, The Kathmandu Cottage down in North Melbourne. Firstly I’d like to point out that Nepalese food and Indian food are similar – but not the same. Nepalese cuisine is heavily meat based, where as Indian Food offers a wider range of vegetarian dishes with more curries and spices. However at The Kathmandu Cottage, you can be treated to both. I would try the Goat Curry (the chef ’s favourite) or the Raita made from carrot and cucumber in home-made natural yoghurt. I also wouldn’t go past the Gulab Jamun for dessert – home-made milk dumplings dipped in sugar syrup. 18

Perth rapper Evanda has dropped new visuals for his sensual single ‘Move’. This one is for the ladies out there, with the empowering female-driven music video destroying the idea that women are only seen as mere sex objects in the rap industry. Evanda released the track last week on the International Day of the Girl, to celebrate female strength and unity. The song is taken from the 6k emcee’s upcoming EP Through My Eyes, following the success of In My Sight released with record label WVS. Produced by fellow Home Baked member Luchii, the hazy track will sweep you off your feet with its sexy, sunsoaked synths and undeniably, raw lyrics. It’s been over two years since we last heard from Burn City local Dylan Joel but the talented singer/songwriter has gifted us with a groovy new track titled ‘Hola, Hola’. The infectious single combines Joel’s signature flow and vulnerable lyricism with a captivating hook and flawless melodic acoustics. The hip hop artist has toured across the country supporting international artists Pharoahe Monch and Hopsin, as well as opening for a number of iconic Aussie acts including Illy and Bliss N Eso. Dylan Joel released Authentic Lemonade back in 2015, and despite his recent social media absence, it’s clear he’s been keeping busy, promising new material on the way.
On Saturday night, techno institution Machine is back at My Aeon, this time featuring Machine’s most prolific in-house label signee The Black Moy from France. The Black Moy is known for his tight, high-production values and enormous sound. With a foundation laid upon solid beat structures, mesmerising atmospherics and unexpected change-ups, The Black Moy’s compositions are characterised by an enormity of space and a density of sound. Joining him is fellow Machine label signee Composite Cone with new collaborator Klaps, residents Simon Slieker and Andrew Till, Syme Tollens and DJ Elscorcho. Projections vibing on the geometric Machine design aesthetic will be provided by VDMO. Kicks off at 10pm.
Noosa-bred, Melbourne-based rapper Kudos has delivered his latest catchy single ‘The Rhythm’. Taken from his eagerly-awaited second EP Stop Trying, the new track melds smooth ‘90s hip hop beats with fast-paced narrative lyricism. Produced by Kleenbeats, the track also features cuts by DJ Lickweed and was mastered by Benjamin Kramp at Earthshake Audio. Kudos’ five-track EP Stop Trying is due for release early 2018. The emcee will celebrate the launch of his new single with a party at Grumpy’s this Saturday October 21 alongside support acts Context and Ninah Nicole. Four-time Grammy-Award winner Macklemore returns to Australia for his headline tour this summer. The American rapper performed at this year’s NRL Grand Final, performing his equality anthem ‘Same Love’ and will head Down Under for loyal fans early next year. The tour comes off the back of his most recent album GEMINI which features tracks ‘Glorious’ and ‘Good Old Days.’ It’s his first solo effort in 12 years with no assistance from producer Ryan Lewis. You can see Macklemore when he performs in Melbourne on Tuesday February 6 and Wednesday February 7, 2018 at Festival Hall. Jorja
Witness an incredible lineup of local talent this month at The Get Down #5. Dancer and R&B singer Jorja will take to the stage and there will be performances by hip hop duo Verbal Tactics, Avii, TruSoulE, Emerald, Mistress of Ceremony and young Melbourne rapper Krown. This will be the final performance by DJ Jimmy Flipshyt before he moves from Melbourne to Queensland so come on down and make this a night to remember. The Get Down will take place at Horse Bazaar on Saturday October 21.

Kings Cross is awash with characters; punters line the street looking for a place to eat, somewhere to party, a way to keep their night going into the morning. It’s a level of rowdiness you wouldn’t expect in the middle of the week. But then you walk a hundred metres and this all falls away. The mythical line of Potts Point has been crossed and the difference is striking. Suits and expensive wines, fine food and day spas. It is here, in East Asian eatery Paper Bird that I meet David Novak and John-Henry Pajack of Polish Club. Why here, I wonder? An area now notorious for the birth of lock-out laws and decline of Sydney’s live music landscape. It’s a pocket of extremes, which could sum up the band quite well; they’re hardly ones to do things by halves. “If you don’t want to do music,” Novak says, “If you think it’s hard … Like how someone like Lanie Lane looked around and said this isn’t for me, and quit. I have respect for that. You can complain as much as you want, because you’ve pursued something else. But the people who are like, ‘Oh, it’s so fucking tough, but I’m still doing it. You should know what I’m doing for you guys is fucking hard.’ No, no. The people who are spending money on your concert tickets and spending money working at some shitty restaurant, that’s hard, and you should be thanking them. It shits me.” “I’ve been working and in bands for ten years now,” Pajack adds. “You do what you have to to make it work. From when we started to now, that feels the same. Even though it’s more successful now, and we get to hang out with cool people. They’re all regular people who just happen to be in good bands. People are really chill.” “We haven’t met any artists who are really douchebags,” Novak says. “We’re probably the biggest bags of douche we know,” Pajack nods, and they laugh. If true, they must be putting on one hell of a positive media face since the pair are both gregarious and very, very funny. Given I’m essentially a stranger to them, it’s nice to see the ease of their camaraderie, the comfort of their banter. As a band with no immediate plans to expand the lineup (five albums in, maybe expect a horn section), they clearly know what they’re trying to achieve with their music. Best part is, that doesn’t necessarily need to match what listeners take away from their songs. “I think this EP is pretty clear what things are about,” Pajack says, thinking across the scope of their releases. “I have a folder on my computer of a couple of hundred iPhone recordings. We have heaps of little ideas. The EP, three of the songs are old ideas that we went with, we had something there and flipped it. And the other three are brand new.”
“But meaning is never set in stone, for me,” Novak insists. “There’s a meaning I can latch onto when I write it, and again when we record. But I hate when it’s like, ‘It means this, there are no arguments, you should be thinking only this as a listener’. Fuck that. As long as they’re hearing what the words are, they can think whatever the hell they want. That’s what I like to do when I listen to songs. I’d never put that on someone else.” The food is served, the beers drained and replaced. It’s interesting to note how when one steps away to use the bathroom, the other immediately falls into singing their praises. When together, they talk of the band, of their favourite video games, of the stresses they’ve encountered cracking into the US market. Get them alone, and more personal praise starts to emerge. It’s a brotherly affection that has laid clear foundations for one of the most discussed Aussie rock acts in recent history. “I think the thing is, we try not to overcook songs,” Pajack says as talk turns to their latest surprise EP, Okie Dokie. “We try and keep it sounding pretty much how it sounds the first time it comes out. If we spend too much time on it, it usually doesn’t sound right. When you try and force things, you get something else. You listen to the Iphone recordings of when we first came up with something, it’s going to sound pretty similar to the recording later on. Tempos might get faster and faster but that’s it.” “We record as soon as we write a song,” Novak elaborates. “I’ll make up sounds that work with that melody, or one line that I like. But I’m not sitting at home with a Bible of lyrics. Songs like [‘Hard in the City’], the serious, slow, moody ones, I like to keep vague. I like to be really specific with the aggressive ones, with specific lines that people can really latch onto. It’s not really a conscious thing. I think if I get really specific with the emotional ones, it starts to get a little sacrosanct and cheesy. I don’t buy it as much. Whereas if I let the vibe of the song as a whole take control, with simple lyrics that complement that, it’s a lot easier to digest.” “And you’re not a super sappy emotional dude writing sappy emotional lyrics,” Pajack points out. “I’m not a 21-year-old mess trying to figure out life,” Novak agrees. “I’m just a fucking lazy prick that’s writing a song, and I’m completely comfortable with that. There will come a point in the day where I’ll feel meh, and hey, there’s a song. It’s therapeutic.”
“As long as they’re hearing what the words are, they can think whatever the hell they want. That’s what I like to do when I listen to songs. I’d never put that on someone else.”

Germinal If you’re an evolutionist, then you believe things took time. We’re talking millions of years. If you’re a creationist, then you believe the old robed dude upstairs knocked the whole lot out in a week. But what if you only had 80-minutes to create an entire new world? The question appealed to French artists Halory Goerger and Antoine Defoort, who wanted to create a world from scratch. “Basically there would be nothing on stage at the beginning of the piece. Literally nothing – an empty space, black, no light. The basic rule was that we would, the characters of the piece, would have to discover or invent every item, every element, every feature, that is necessary to make the play,” Defoort says. This means the basics of a theatre show – like the space, the lights, even language – would all have to evolve. Words don’t come at first, they find other ways to express themselves before discovering they can also do this with their mouth; and when they do speak, it’s in French, although there are English subtitles. “We start from nothing and we end up building a small scale civilisation that allows us to make the play happen,” he says. The result is the international cult hit Germinal, an “ontological vaudeville” according to the New York Times in a glowing review, which described the show as being “delightful” and “a whole lot of fun and deeply affecting”. First performed in France in 2012, it’s been touring the world ever since and is making its Australian premiere as part of the Melbourne Festival. Germinal is not an overtly political work, says Defoort, but is akin to science fiction, in that they are using a new universe to comment on our existing, familiar one, in a playful but meaningful way. “We wanted to recreate history of humankind but with a
“We wanted to recreate history of humankind but with a space of ten metres wide by eight metres” space of ten metres wide by eight metres and a time scale of 80 minutes and the entire population would be four people. So what would have happened if we had been living this story?” They use this microcosm to examine human interaction, especially after the characters discover a computer. “Togetherness and how we deal with things together; and how we initiate, how we try to listen and fail, fail to listen to each other. In Germinal there’s quite a lot of those issues: where we discover a new tool, we imagine a new protocol and then we have to agree with each other as to how to use it, and do we use it or not, and what are the consequences,” says Defoort. “I think in the Middle Ages they had the same issues but they had the one king who gets to decide for everyone, but how do we decide things collectively? How do we listen to each other? Obviously there’s a lot of work to do right now in our real world,” he says. Defoort and Goerger are from L’Amicale De Production, a project co-operative combining visual art, music and interactive performance to create
constantly shifting visions of theatre. They worked together, as both co-writers and co-directors of Germinal, and their creative process reflected the negotiations they depict onstage. “We decided to do everything together,” he says. “We spent a lot of time talking to each other about how it’s going to develop, so it was kind of like going to the shrink – one lying down and speaking and the other one taking notes and saying ‘uh-huh, go on...’” he says. “It’s a mirror of what’s happening in the piece because we had to find tools and protocols and to settle and to imagine how to negotiate between both of us. In a way it fuelled the piece itself to be confronted with the same kind of issues.” By Joanne Brookfield
Like Running Water Like Running Water, as its name suggests, is an immersive performance incorporating music and visuals to create a sensory experience surrounding the theme of water. The performance combines the musical strengths of Ella Thompson, Clio Renner and Sui Zhen with video imagery by visual artists Honey Long and Prue Stent. Thompson, frontwoman of GL and Dorsal Fins, had long wanted to collaborate with an all-female cast, so when the opportunity to perform as part of Melbourne Festival arose she reached out to Renner, Zhen, Honey and Stent to see if they would be interested in working together. From there, Thompson developed a concept she felt everyone could relate to and interpret in their own way. “We wanted to have a theme that tied it all together that we could all individually respond to, and it’s a broad enough theme where everyone can find their own meaning, so it’s not so directly about this one thing,” says Thompson. “There are elements of chaos and calm, fluidity and the meditative nature of water. “It’s something that can take many forms through life, and water takes the structure of whatever the vessel you give it, [it’s about] thinking of the structures that we live within and how we adapt to them. Femininity is a big part of the performance, not that it’s about being a woman but being fluid, I identify that with female strengths.” Between Thompson’s soulful vocals and storytelling abilities, Renner’s background as a pianist and Zhen’s strengths in beat-driven electronic music 22 BEAT.COM.AU

“I wanted to do something that celebrated female talent and a chance where we can actually make and direct work together on our own.” and pop songwriting, all accompanied by a woodwind section, the group’s sound is varied to say the least. Though a mutual admiration for each other’s music allowed for a strong collaborative approach. “It was so surprising to hear how it all came together, it worked like magic and there’s enough continuity in the sound that it’s not random, it’s very complementary,” says Renner. “I really wanted to explore minimalism and stripping it back and letting the voice be heard in that big space and focusing it on the intricacies of more minimal sound,” adds Thompson. “We wanted to do something that celebrated the talent that we have here and emerging artists that are really pushing the boundaries in their work. We all have that willingness to explore in common. I wanted to do something that celebrated female talent and a chance where we can actually make and direct work together on our own.” “This is actually the first time I’ve ever worked in an all-female group and it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do because in my experience most of my bands have been predominately made up of males,” says Renner. “I didn’t expect the energy to be quite so different – in the best way possible – and it was something that was slower paced and empathetic. Not to say that men don’t have these
qualities, but it was quite surprising to experience the difference of working with an only female cast.” “I think it’s not displayed enough in terms of all aspects of a performance piece portrayed by females,” continues Renner. “It’s always like if there’s a female singer there’s meant to be a male producer or quite often an all-male band, so it’s important to show that a full production can be displayed by women and be as good and hopefully inspire. I hope people come, and women as well, come and be inspired by what we do.” Like Running Water will be a one night only performance at Melbourne Recital Centre as part of Melbourne Festival but Thompson and Renner are both certain that this won’t be the last time we see the group working together. “We’ve put a lot of work into making the music and it’s all new music that hasn’t been performed or heard before so we’re going to record this music for my next solo record, but hopefully we’ll get to perform it at other festivals like Melbourne Festival in the future,” says Thompson. “We’re very interested in what each other does, we’re very excited to explore that,” adds Renner. “More jamming, more writing – it’s definitely not the end of our collaboration.” By Kate Streader

The Pleasure Garden The Pleasure Garden festival may just be the ideal way to kickstart your summer. This vibrant event boasts a dazzling program overflowing with music, theatrical performances and art installations. The eclectic lineup of musical acts manages to embrace everything from the gypsy folk of 8 Foot Felix, to hip hop superstar Remi, and genre-splicing dubbased sonic goodness like Fat Freddy’s Drop. In a world that seems to be rife with unnecessary division and a staggering degree of social and political tumultuousness, festivals such as The Pleasure Garden provide an opportunity for escapism, connection and rejuvenation. “I think the festival provides an anaesthetic in the fact that you can go and separate yourself from the world,” says Festival Director Goose McGrath. “A valuable role of any proper creative art space is that you can, on one level, anesthetise yourself and go ‘Ok, I’m going to go to another world. I am going to go into an imaginary wonderland; a place that I know is full of happiness and joy. I’m going to ignore, just for a day, what’s going on out there.’ That can help recharge your batteries.” It is true that this process can have widereaching benefits. “The festival can act like a real antidote,” McGrath says. “The biggest problem we have in society – not just in Australia but globally – is a disconnection of community. “If we can create these environments that encourage people to connect with each other on
“They mix genres and styles. They have got something that can transcend age, denomination and gender.” almost a child-like level, on a pure level of joy and fun, then that emotional memory is something that they will take back to their own community. If you can take something that inspires you and brings joy and happiness to your life and then take that back and spread that joy, happiness and openness, I think that creates a better connectivity for everyone.” The musical lineup certainly seems destined to ignite this contagious sense of joy, and it’s clear that a great deal of thought has gone into the selection of musical acts. “We try to make sure we have a good reggae, dub and bass component as well as hip hop and electronic music,” McGrath says. “We try to make sure that we have good cultural and gender diversity. We have about 45% females on the lineup.” Fat Freddy’s Drop are the perfect fit for a festival that fosters connection and inclusivity rather than division and fragmentation. “Essentially, they are a dub act but they translate through all the different genres,” McGrath says. “People who listen almost exclusively to techno get Fat Freddy’s Drop. People who listen to dub like Fat Freddy’s Drop. There are people who are 45 years old and are from the Alpine regions of Victoria who love Fat Freddy’s Drop. “They mix genres and styles. They have got something that can transcend age, denomination and gender. When we first started the festival they
were on the top of our list of acts we wanted because we thought they best represented the environment and the vibe we are trying to create, so we are super excited to have them on this year.” Complementing all this exciting music is a colourful selection of art and theatre. “Immersive, colour, movement and joy. That’s probably the easiest way to sum [The Pleasure Garden] up. There will be loads of roving theatrical performances,” McGrath says. “We also have participation aspects as well. The dress-up theme this year is Birds of Paradise. We have a dress-up and dance-off competition. There will also be loads of installation art. We curate that from people from all around Australia.” Contemplating the festival’s future, McGrath says, “We are happy with our position as one of the first parties of the summer. We are going to continue to develop and curate a more immersive and creative experience for patrons over the years to come and to connect more and more with developing artists. We want to continue to develop and nurture creativity in multiple streams of art forms as the years progress.” The future certainly looks bright in The Pleasure Garden. By Graham Blackley
Damian Cowell’s Disco Machine Not many can claim the wit and charisma of Damian Cowell. A force to be reckoned with, Cowell has long kept the entertainment industry on its toes as the frontman for anarchic alt-rockers TISM, Root! and the DC3 – but at this year’s Darebin Music Feast, his powerhouse mega-project Damian Cowell’s Disco Machine will be channelling their trademark energy into the Feast’s grand finale: The Reservoir Stomp. “I think it’s where I feel like I fit in best,” Cowell says. “I certainly don’t fit in the inner city – the alarm bells usually go off when I walk into a ‘cool’ venue. Not saying that the Resi Bowls Club isn’t cool, but I feel that I’m communicating on a level that people understand when I’m out in the ‘burbs. “I’m actually looking forward to seeing The Fauves,” he continues. “I’d spent some quality time on buses with them in the ‘90s, and they’re a very edified and innate group of individuals. Despite their deliberately shambolic image, they’re all extremely well-read gentlemen and I think they remain underrated to this day. It’s going to be one of the highlights for me.” A day of comedy, music, food and barefoot bowls, The Reservoir Stomp promises to electrify – something Cowell relishes. On top of a high-octane live show, the Disco Machine’s latest album, Get Yer Dag On, continued their blend of cheeky social

“I get hugged by blokes in supermarkets who say that I changed their lives, which is pretty weird, y’know.” commentary and boppy beats with a choc-a-block lineup of guests (including Judith Lucy, Shaun Micallef, Adalita, The Bennies and Kate MillerHeidke, to name a few). Never one to disappoint, Cowell promises a great time. “Given the fact that I’m sort of plain-looking, I’ve surrounded myself with beautiful people,” Cowell says. “There’s a video-screen going the whole time, because everyone these days is able to fragment their consciousness, and I’m up with the zeitgeist on that. Everything’s happening – it’s a wide-screen experience. You know that none of it is particularly high-brow, and that makes you feel – hopefully – reasonably comfortable. This is not Kafka. This is ‘Jessie’s Girl’.” Cowell’s uniquely dystopian disco has long struck a chord. It’s fun, but unashamedly honest. “I just sort of throw in a few little parts,” he explains. “It’s like when you have a beautiful Indian curry which you’ve made yourself, and you chomp on a bit of cardamom in there.” Constantly traversing the worlds of comedy and music, Cowell’s razor-sharp satire has developed a generation-spanning following. “If I was going to be true to myself, I have to say I’d rather there not be so much material to write about,” Cowell admits. “It would be a nicer thing if the world wasn’t threatened by people with bad haircuts and we weren’t about to vote on something that I
reckon in about 50 years time, they’ll be looking back and going, ‘They actually had a vote on that?’ “I can’t explain the yield that my stuff ’s had, but it does seem to have – that’s why I’m still around, I suppose,” Cowell continues. “I get hugged by blokes in supermarkets who say that I changed their lives, which is pretty weird, y’know. I’m totally beholden to these people. It’s wonderful that somewhere along the line I seem to have touched a nerve.” His trademark self-deprecation aside – “Most of my songs position me as a character who has chosen an incredibly boring life and yet still complains about it,” he half-jokes – Cowell’s keen to welcome new friends to their “happy little family” at this year’s Resi Stomp. Among an incredible lineup, Disco Machine’s ready to party and show why the neighbourhood shindig is so important. “At the risk of sounding incredibly old and ‘my-day’, when I was a teenager, bands who had records out – who were on the radio, or on TV – would be playing in the suburbs, in all those horrendous beer-bars,” Cowell says. “Rock was in the suburbs, and for so long it hasn’t been. I really reckon this kind of thing is, I believe, the way of the future. Maybe things will turn around. Who knows? We might have a new Billy Thorpe.” By Jacob Colliver

Ashley Davies Ashley Davies is no stranger to the Australian music scene. After three decades manning the drum kit his resume is looking mighty full. He’s opened for Bob Dylan, played live with the likes of Jeff Lang and Chris Wilson, won an ARIA with Matt Walker, and he’s just released his sixth solo album. Not to mention the colossal stack of album credits as a session drummer, and a couple of film and television soundtracks for good measure. While he’s been a lifeblood of the scene, providing a heartbeat of sweet, sweet drumming for near on 30 years, he’s never been afraid to look beyond the veil, to try something new. This seems to stem from an admiration for those who push boundaries, irrespective of their field. “Film, theatre, books, art; I do enjoy it when I see or hear somebody doing something that I haven’t seen before, when I see individuals pushing it a bit that does inspire me,” Davies says. “I know it sounds crazy, but even in sport, if people are really going to do something major, you have to [push it, especially] if you’re trying to bust into new territory, unexplored territory.” Ashley’s latest solo album Pulse-Transit echoes these sentiments; it’s a non-stop 32-minute instrumental epic that not only bends genres, but time and rhythm itself. The album’s conception came after Davies attended a modern dance show which had a profound impact on him. “My favourite form of dance was ‘50s and ‘60s lindy hoppers, where it was always on the beat, so when I went to this modern dance I was like ‘What the fuck’s going on here? Where’s their beat? Where’s anything?’” Rather than following a set beat, the dancers
“I do enjoy it when I see or hear somebody doing something that I haven’t seen before.” seemed to have their own sense of time and rhythm, he notes that a friend remarked, “Maybe with this form of dance, if they feel like they’re getting in time they’ll get back out of it again straight away.” Enamoured with the performance, it inspired his own exploration. “I was taken with it, I actually loved that sonically and in a visual sort of way, I just didn’t know what was going to happen next, I really like that, hence the album has that about it.” That album certainly has that feel about it – Davies has carefully constructed an aural experience of twists and turns. You’re never quite sure what’s going to happen next. Ever mindful of the listeners journey, after the first four tracks he notes, “I need to bring it back, we’ll go to a forest, hence strings and acoustics guitars, you’re walking through a nice forest with big trees.” The visual cues are themed throughout the album. ‘179 on the Hume’ sends you hurdling up the Hume Highway in Davies’ ’65 HD Holden, while ‘Decoke’ has a different story. “[It comes from years] living across the road from a freight train track. When they’re coming up the hill they do this thing call decoking, letting off carbon,” he says, and so the wailing, distorted harmonicas mimic the process,
sending the listener to another place. The album is carefully balanced, between exploration and tradition, between organic guitars and metallic synths, between hurdling Holden’s and beautiful forests. Davies speaks of a similar balance when approaching the many collaborations on the album “Sometimes you have to be a bit tight with it, but I always want to give the musicians freedom, you’ll get so much more if you’re like, ‘Hey what’s your thing?’ so they can expand.” You get a sense of Davies’ love of musical exploration when he speaks of his collaborations on the album. When probed as to whether he has a favourite he exclaims, “I love all the musicians on the album.” Speaking specifically of Amy Valent Curlis’ contribution on Fremantle Doctor, he notes, “I had written that track on guitar so how Amy interpreted that [on marimba and xylophone] was magnificent. I really enjoyed that collaboration because I hadn’t really done anything on those instruments before.”

Echo City Distance is no problem for Echo City. With vocalist and songwriter Jade Goodge based in Melbourne, and producer Carter Carlton over in Los Angeles, it is their instant creative chemistry and a speedy internet connection that has helped bring the duo together. Goodge describes Echo City as a city that doesn’t have cars, where it’s always the weekend, art and music are the currency and there is complete creative freedom. “I’d always be going to sleep when Carter would be waking up, so we started pretending that it was a secret city that we could meet in, we’d say ‘See you in Echo City,’ when we’d sign out. So we decided, ‘Let’s just use that for our band name,’” she says. Countless hours spend writing via Skype and email saw Echo City create what would have been a whole album. That was until Goodge flew to the US. There the pair decided to scrap the whole project, writing a new album in just three days. “We had such a better energy in real life, we didn’t even have expectations and the music was so good when we were in person,” Carlton says. “We were cranking them [songs] out, and by that time we’d figured out what we really liked about our sound and were making things with an actual sound in mind. It was really fun.” Echo City likes to keep things light hearted and fun, with their only rule being not to take themselves too seriously. When asked if they had a name for their debut EP, Goodge laughs. “I was thinking we should call it Will Send Nudes, because I feel like in the music industry, it’s really hard to break in. “I was saying to Carter at one point, ‘I reckon we would have way more in-roads if I just ended every email with, “Will send nudes for cooperation”’ and I was like, ‘We should call our EP Will Send Nudes.’”

“If you have the tools and the patience to learn how to do it yourself, there’s really no obstacles for you as a creator” On what fans can expect to hear on their debut EP, Goodge says, “The second single’s got a lot more dance elements to it. It’s got a similar kind of urban, gritty, edgy, dark pop feel to it with electronics and singer/songwriter type vocals.” “Yeah, I guess we’ll call it dark pop really, that’s the best description for it,” Carlton adds. With Goodge predominantly doing all of the songwriting and vocals, and Carlton doing the programming from the other side of the world, Echo City isn’t a band that could have existed ten years ago. “This is a great time to be alive as a musician because you as a musician or creator of any type of art, don’t have to be in a huge studio or you don’t have to have somebody shoving you a lot of money to hire a bunch of people to work with. If you have the tools and the patience to learn how to do it yourself, there are really no obstacles for you as a creator,” Carlton says. Trying to turn the tables around on a common
belief of electronic music, Echo City decided to make their slogan ‘Digitise your soul’. “People have this idea that electronic music has got less soul than real instruments. We put a lot of thought into our lyrics and everything’s quite introspective in terms of our lyrical content. We felt there’s a bit more soul in there and electronic music can have singer/songwriter type lyrics as well. It’s more of a digitising,” Goodge says. Keeping things colourful, Echo City posts a lot of photos of street art on their social media pages. When asked about it, both Goodge and Carlton say that they feel like street art is a visual representation of what they’re doing and what they want their music to sound like. “I think it also matches the music. I feel like sometimes the electronic elements are like a splash of graffiti on certain lyrics,” Goodge says. By Ellen Rosie
Echo City release their debut single ‘Burn Me’ on Friday October 27.

Psychic Hysteria Despite 13 releases in just over two years, Kurt Eckardt still feels as though his label Psychic Hysteria is still just getting started. What initially began as an avenue for Eckardt to self-release, has expanded into a community of music and zine makers that champions, above all, a sense of autonomy and a DIY ethos. Speaking with Eckardt and his partner Kalindy Williams in their spiritual home of The Old Bar, it’s clear the understanding between them translates well with other creatives. The pair are the forces behind Heat Wave and Astral Skulls, two bands who have released music through Psychic Hysteria. The label is also home to local luminaries Piss Factory, Gnohms, Plaster of Paris and WARS, with more bands on the horizon in 2018. “Psychic Hysteria is basically made up of bands I love,” explains Eckardt. “We both go to so many shows and we play with so many bands we love. A lot of them want to self-release but don’t know where to start. We’re a support for that more than anything.” While Williams’ contribution to the label is more creative than admin, it’s clear her investment is just as pronounced. “I want more people to hear these bands that I also really like. I think what Psychic Hysteria gives them is a platform when they might not have one, and ultimately the label helps them to reach a wider audience than they would be able to on their own.” Fundamental to the label is a shared ideology among its artists, with Eckardt quick to articulate that this is just as important as their creative output. “We work with bands we have a real personal affinity with. It’s not just the music, I have to really respect the
“You don’t need to be rich to do this stuff but it’s good to have a community around you that can help.” people. That’s what makes it all so much more special. Every time I get an email seeing something of another band’s sold, I get so excited. “It’s incredible that someone else is sitting at home listening to the music I love. The other day Gnohms told me before they started working with us that they always struggled to figure out where they fit in the music scene. That definitely means a lot.” Unlike most other record labels, Psychic Hysteria have placed a particular focus on putting out zines, with Eckardt explaining that the idea to release written work was initially spearheaded by his Sydney counterpart Hon Boey. “Hon’s super into zine culture and as a result he got me pretty interested in it as well. Before he was involved with the label he wanted to put a book out through us. I’d just done my album and I’d never really thought about doing something other than records. He was like, ‘If you’ve got a website and you’re paying for that hosting, why not broaden it?’ It was his idea but I was really excited by it because it meant that it wasn’t just me talking about myself.”
Eckardt is also clear that he never wants to steer creatives on the label in a specific direction, instead prioritising their right to be in control of their art. “We both do photos for a lot of the bands and Kalindy also does a lot of artwork too. We bounce a lot of ideas off bands but we would never make a decision on their behalf. That just seems totally logical to me.” At the heart of Psychic Hysteria is a DIY spirit that makes everything that comes out of the label possible. “I think that for a lot of places in the world, DIY is a necessity because of a lack of money, or due to cultural or community influences,” muses Eckardt. Williams continues, “I think a lot of people just feel like they can’t do things creatively if they don’t have money. I think that DIY culture really opens things up and allows people to help each other to make things happen. You don’t need to be rich to do this stuff but it’s good to have a community around you that can help.”
Psychic Hysteria will take over Grace Darling on Saturday October 21 with Piss Factory, Plaster of Paris, Pearl Bay, Wars, and more.

Bec Sandridge
I’ll Never Want A BF (Independent)
On synth-pop belter ‘I’ll Never Want A BF’, Bec Sandridge nails the fundamentals in terms of conventional song construction to set up an understated podium for striking, operatic vocal flourish. Daring idiosyncrasies never divert from the directness of the song’s message. A singalong anthem that dares you to have a crack at the high notes.

MASSEDUCTION
Julien Baker
Turn Out The Lights (Matador/Remote Control)
Julien Baker provides a clear window of introspection on ‘Turn Out The Lights’, crafting a sparseness which serves as a countdown to a spectacular eruption. Even as it expands into fanfare, Baker retains masterful, singular control – parlaying inner conflict into a monumental display.
Evangelical empress Annie Clark, AKA St. Vincent, makes her long-awaited return to form with her wildly anticipated fifth album MASSEDUCTION.
Baker Boy ft Yirrmal
Marryuna (Independent)
Bursting through with a bombastic mix of bass and didge, Baker Boy goes large and doesn’t let up throughout ‘Marryuna’, pulling off festival-ready Australian hip hop with a hook from Yirrmal. He continues the promising trajectory of previous cut ‘Cloud 9’, scaling up in terms of scope and energy.
Totally Mild
Today Tonight (Chapter)
A swirl of resonant schmaltz and underlying hints of unease paint the picture on ‘Today Tonight’, the first salvo from Totally Mild’s upcoming Her. The crescendo of “Today I got it right for the first time in a while / Saw some friends and went outside,” finds celebration, followed by a disorientating, yet comforting, release of searing disarray.
This time around, Clark has teamed up with renowned producer Jack Antonoff to create her most pop-infused record to date. While the album contains flourishes of Clark’s fearsome guitar licks for which she’s renowned, it’s predominately cast to the side to make way for St. Vincent’s new brand of glossy electro-pop and heartwrenching, soul-crushing balladry. Dress it up however you want, the lyrical content on MASSEDUCTION is undeniably sad, no two ways about it. Sure, her lyrics may be concealed behind uberkink and electro-pop pulses, drenched in abrasive synth freak-outs and hypnotic vocals, but the record is a glaringly confessional affair, containing whiffs of despair, trickles of longing and a profound sense of insecurity, wrapped up in hyper-coloured Pantone plastic and served to listeners on a glistening art-pop platter. Here, synth-soaked dancefloor anthems, robotic beats and mechanical vocals collide with strikingly candid piano ballads and sweeping strings, tied together with Clark’s breathtaking vocal arrangements. Album opener ‘Hang On Me’ exposes a vulnerability and sense of forlorn that seeps through the entire album. The opener is followed up by a whimsical jaunt into the pharmaceutically-laden paradise of ‘Pills’ – an art-pop jingle that’ll get caught in your head for days. Title track ‘Masseduction’ along with ‘Sugarboy’ showcase the pop-infused selections on the record, featuring throbbing electro beats and robo-guitar chops, while ‘New York’ is a stark piano ballad that features nothing more than Clark’s floaty vocals and the tinkling of piano keys. But its tracks like ‘Happy Birthday, Johnny’ that underscore the devastating fragility that permeates through the album, as Clark speaks directly to the character she’s addressed on her previous releases in a shattering song that highlights the intrinsic loneliness and sense of abandon that comes hand in hand with celebrity and fame. Overall, MASSEDUCTION is an enthralling, intimate record that features constant twists, turns and nuances, leading audiences toward a sharp descent into the deepest and most foreboding cavities in the fortress of St Vincent’s imagination. Liam Gallagher
As You Were
9.0
In her Miss You EP, listeners were given a different taste of Gabrielle Aplin. Using elements of upbeat pop/electronica, tangled between angelic vocals and heart-wrenching lyricism, it seemed to be a new direction for the songs. Ten months later and Aplin has continued to earmark herself as a pop force to be reckoned with in her short, sharp gem of an EP, Avalon. The EP has a pulsing beginning with opener ‘Waking up Slow’. A far cry from the slow, melodic Aplin of a few years ago, at first it feels a little jarring, but it really is a downright banger. ‘Say Nothing’ follows and is another upbeat, anthem-style piece of pop that will tug at the heart-strings of anyone that’s wanted someone they love to fight for them. ‘Used To Do’ feels the most closely aligned to the Aplin sound that many are familiar with. Offering a sparkling intro, the track is driven by light, acoustic guitar and pounding drums, while the singer’s vocals shine. Overall, the new direction that Aplin takes on this release is well executed and deserves high praise. While some listeners might feel the loss of Aplin’s older sound, there’s certainly a lot to gain.
The hot and cold relationship between the Gallagher brothers has always been an interesting one. Yes, it’s been entertaining to watch and ever since Oasis split in 2009, there have been several talks about rekindling the band. Now we finally get Liam’s debut solo studio album, As You Were. Opening with ‘Wall Of Glass’, the sound of the guitars is massive. It has a real Brit-pop flavour, and throughout the heavily distorted harmonica riff shines. Sure, for the foreseeable future there will be considerable comparisons to the Oasis discography, however this is Liam flying on his own. The pulsating rhythms in the bass and acoustic guitar of ‘You Better Run’ is a highlight and after Liam name checks The Beatles ‘Helter Skelter,’ the guitars delve into a distorted lick that sounds very QOTSA. ‘For What It’s Worth’ is the heart-sweeping ballad of the album, and sorrowful string arrangements complement Gallagher. It sounds sincere and holds a comparison to ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’. As You Were holds many great moments that’ll have you repeatedly reaching for this magnum opus. His upcoming appearance in Australia will be a definite highlight for the summer. In a word As You Were is remarkable.

As one of the originators of trap music, it seems appropriate that Gucci Mane’s extraordinary comeback and entry into pop stardom coincides with rap’s ongoing glow up. However, Mr. Davis does little to assert Guwop’s natural talent or authority over his own genre, resulting in a muddled album that seemingly lacks the quality control and musical substance demonstrated by his contemporaries. While Gucci still delivers the odd razor-sharp stanza here and there, his rags-to-riches lyrical narrative now seems lacklustre and lacks the edge of his previous releases. It also doesn’t help that only six of Mr. Davis’ 17 tracks host no feature artists, resulting in Gucci Mane being heavily outshone by feature artists such as Migos and ScHoolboy Q on ‘I Get The Bag’ and ‘Lil Story.’ On the bright side, Mr Davis does feature a strong assortment of icy, bass heavy beats from frequent collaborators Zaytoven and Southside, but overall, the album pales in contrast to his May collaborative mixtape with Metro Boomin on Droptop Wop. While Mr. Davis does have the potential to be a big chart success, unfortunately, it’s going to be Gucci Mane’s fans that are going to miss the most this time around. By Will Brewster

Lime Cordiale
Permanent Vacation
9.0
Lime Cordiale’s debut full-length, Permanent Vacation, is a colourful and catchy bob. This is a splendidly genre-fluid record that does well to not appear jarring. Each track melts beautifully into the next, with hints of soul, funk, pop and rock throughout. Permanent Vacation offers moments of sass and spunk yet also does a splendid job at paring things back and telling stories of love, yearning and growing up. ‘Can I Be Your Lover’ is a tune that feels like it embodies all of the wonderful elements of Lime Cordiale at once. Show this to someone wanting to get a full-bodied idea of what this band can do. It mixes catchy rock guitars, a soulful voice and dance-vibe keys with ease, making for a truly fun track. ‘What Is Growing Up’ feels like an anthem for 20-somethings going through the motions of burgeoning adulthood. It grooves along to some bloody relatable lyrics such as, “What is growing up, is it fighting for a car spot?” that will make you think, ‘Shit, that’s genius.’ Overall, there’s a signature Lime Cordiale groove to be felt in this record. Permanent Vacation is engaging and eclectic and is certainly a record not to be missed. By Abbey Lew-Kee

True View, the sixth studio album by California outfit Stick To Your Guns, is a pleasant change of direction from the band’s last album Disobedient. Jesse Barnett’s lyrics have matured as well as his vocal range and style, which is put to use quite well in the diverse range of songs on this album. The lyrics have been written with an emotional and introspective eye not frequently seen on a STYG record. This is also mirrored by a conscious change in musical direction, with a lot more melodies and well-executed, though sometimes a bit excessive, singing choruses. The album still retains a trademark hardcore feel and you can find some old-school heavy breakdowns and two-stepping riffs nestled in among the melodies and sometimes-haunting, catchy, clean vocals. Highlights include ‘Cave Canem,’ with its hard-hitting riffs, anthemic chorus and ending with a booming breakdown. Overall, True View is a pleasant journey and shows that Stick To Your Guns are starting to explore new sounds which suit them. Whether you enjoy breakdowns, melodic-hardcore riffs or clean choruses, consider picking it up and giving it a listen. By Max Carluccio

Willowbank
9.0
Willowbank is one of the more pleasant journeys in modern music. Yumi Zouma’s glimmering indie-pop flows by like a dream, as each song melts into the next and proves that the hype surrounding them has not been for nothing. The record opens with a slick bass slide as ‘Depths (Pt. I)’ launches into the twinkling guitars, bouncing bass and Italo disco backbeat that pervades much of the record. ‘December’ has a wistful piano melody and choruses that swell like a river of faded Polaroids as ghostly voices harmonise with Christie Simpson’s heartbreakingly fragile croon. Indeed her parts are at their most intimate here, with every breathy nuance loftily articulated in the mix. This is nowhere more evident than on ‘Carnation’, where the ample use of silence in the verses gives each vocal cord room to resonate. When the band do finally push the negative space away, it’s an intrusion measured for a delicate contrast. What’s most impressive, however, is simply that the production has finally lived up to the promise of the band’s songwriting. In their transition from sharing files on the internet, to capturing moments on tour and finally getting into the studio, Christchurch’s favourite children have lost none of their yearning worldliness. A Night Of Respect & Wonder
Tell us about AViiDA. AViiDA is a husband and wife soul duo from Perth, Western Australia. They have spent the last ten years working across music and theatre, carving out a successful career and name for themselves. Genre and performance style can be described as smooth motown sounds from Clay Darius teamed with powerhouse vocals from Paula. Why did you choose to celebrate Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin in particular? Stevie and Aretha are our greatest living vocal influences. We wanted to stretch ourselves vocally and really push our limits. Is there any fear or worry in interpreting such classic and well known songs? Absolutely. Both Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder are the ones at top in terms of soul musicians/idols and up until now we’ve steered pretty clear from interpreting their music. We didn’t want to disrespect their songs or their creativity. If you’re going to perform these songs, you need to understand the music, where it has come from and treat the music with love and respect. What is your ultimate Stevie Wonder track? Right now a show favourite would be ‘Isn’t She Lovely’. It’s a moment in the show where I dedicate this song to my beautiful grand-daughter AuroraJade. It’s so special and I love how my voice sits in this song. What is your ultimate Aretha Franklin track? Right now my ultimate Aretha Franklin song would have to be ‘Never Loved A Man’, it pushes me to my absolute limits vocally. Power, passion and then softness all in one massive song.

AViiDA will perform A Night Of Respect & Wonder at Chapel Off Chapel on Tuesday November 17.
Who are we chatting to and what do you do in the band? We are the collective groove of Sullo on lead vocals and bass, JC on lead guitar and backing vocals, and Pete on drums. What do you reckon people will say you sound like? We’re getting comparisons to Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Queens of the Stone Age, and Faith No More in parts. None of that’s a leap. It’s big and groovy. There’s guitars. What do you hope listeners will take away from the album? An intense journey through space and time, the excitement of the heavy and the reprieve, the chaos and the long-winding rabbit hole. The anticipation of flipping the vinyl. If you could travel back in time and show one of your musical heroes your stuff, who would it be? We need not go back in time. There are musical heroes out there now entertaining their ten friends down the local pub or pumping up ten thousand in some paddock. We want to impress them as they impress us. What can we expect from a Planet of the 8s show? A hazy recollection of awe, wonder and that nagging riff from that song you can’t remember the name of but it goes duh duh duh dah...to Shazam. Shit where’s my phone?

Simon Imrei
Who are we chatting to? My name’s Simon and I’m a Mornington Peninsula born, southside dwelling singer/songwriter. I feel like I’m writing my tinder profile. What do you reckon people will say you sound like? I like to think it’s somewhere between bluesy guitar playing, funky grooves and folk storytelling. Kinda like if John Mayer was hanging out at a dive bar with Amos Lee, Neil Finn and Shane Nicholson. What inspires your music most? I’m a guitar player now, but originally a drummer. For me, playing music is all about rhythm. Whether it’s the feel of a great group of musicians onstage or the movement of a piano part or subtly of a double bassist, there’s an underlying groove in everything I try and do. Pair that with the good, old-fashioned, brutally honest storytelling of a Jason Isbell or Ray LaMontagne and I’m set. What’s one thing you love about making music? The recording studio in general. It’s a crazy, stressful, unpredictable environment, but there’s nothing like the feeling of walking out at the end of a night with a song that’s just come together that day, materialised out of nothing. What can a punter expect from your live show? Most of the time, you’ll find me around town playing solo/duo acoustic gigs in front bars or little showcase nights. Every now and then I’ll be joined by my five-piece band where everything gets a little dirtier, a little louder and a whole lot more bluesy. simonimrei.com

Interviews
Nite Jewel Los Angeles-resident Ramona Gonzalez, AKA Nite Jewel, has a synthpop project that oozes with dreamy synths and blissful washed-out vocals. Entering the scene in 2009 with her debut release Good Evening, Gonzalez has released multiple projects including 2012’s One Second Of Love, and 2016’s Liquid Cool under the Nite Jewel moniker, even landing a spot on Grand Theft Auto V’s soundtrack. And now, eight years later, Gonzalez has released yet another chillingly blissful full-length, Real High, with another full-length’s worth of b-sides to-boot. The personal process of writing this album was cathartic for Gonzalez as she found herself evolving musically from her debut release. “I think I was really embarrassed to really say these things that I found really personal outright. I was younger and I was kind of self-conscious in many ways,” she says. “My songs also have this sense of more universal messages whether it’s the concept of a real high and a real low. The society that we live in, we’re constantly being thrust into instances in which we feel really good and really bad all the time; the dopamine effect of social media or whatever, just coffee or drugs or sex. “As a musician, that is constantly being thrust at you. We’re talking right now, yesterday I jumped into a fjord in Norway but the day before that I was hungover and doing airline transfers all day. Everything is constantly going up and down and I think that is personal, but also that isn’t unique to me. The album is my version of those events which could be felt by anyone, musician or not.” This concept dictates most of her LP, but was an idea that didn’t come to Gonzalez recently, taking her a long time to conceptualise. “I started ‘Real High’, the song, in 2011 or
“It’s more up to the musician to adjust their mood or their demeanour and their sound to whatever environment and really play off the environment.” maybe 2010. I wrote that song back then, all in one piece, and it really didn’t change that much. It was a song that I really felt was a strong piece and I knew that it would be the centrepiece of an album somehow.” This process of building an album from this original idea had its fair share of setbacks for Gonzalez. “I did actually finish the Real High album in its previous form in 2013. It was differently produced and I decided not to put it out then because I felt like it wasn’t exactly right, so to finally have it out after that much time is unbelievably liberating.” Gonzalez isn’t alone in the recording process. Her husband Cole M. Greif-Neill assists her in studio to flesh out her tracks and may make a live appearance in her upcoming Australian shows. “I start all the recordings by myself and make the drums, and make the arrangements and sing it and then if needed, I try to get Cole to finalise it, to polish it off with me,” she says. “In some cases, the songs don’t need his touch but in a lot of cases I like to have his touch on there because we’ve been working together for so long, all

the way since my first album. The Nite Jewel sound is partially this collaborative spirit that we have, that’s existed for so long.” Getting her start as Nite Jewel by experimenting with sound installations in art galleries in Echo Park, Gonzalez is no stranger to shows like the NGV Friday Nights. “Whether I’m going to play at a nightclub, or a church, it’s more up to the musician to adjust their mood or their demeanour and their sound to whatever environment and really play off the environment. The cool thing about music is that it can be consumed anywhere.” Excitedly awaiting the NGV’s Dior exhibition, Gonzalez reflected on the similarities between fashion and music and how her fashion sense has changed since she started the project. “I don’t have very many clothes aside from the ones I perform in. I have a see-through onesie with weird stones on it. I feel more like Nite Jewel in my daily life because of it influencing my style.” By Paul Waxman
