Football, music, and beer – is there a greater holy trinity? That is, of course, a rhetorical question. Obviously the answer is no. That’s why we’re so bloody stoked about the Reclink Community Cup. The class live music lineup is more than worth it, throw in a game of footy and you’ve got yourself a ripper day. We chatted with players from either team to get all the inside dirt. Have a read, and pick your side. Now that you’ve got your footy fix, it’s right back into the music. Sven Ratzke walks us through his reimagining of David Bowie’s classics, Middle Kids take us behind their gorgeous debut album Lost Friends, we start celebrating The B.East’s sixth birthday early and get another ace Melbourne producer to dig through some crates to produce a tune for us. News The Melbourne Guitar Show Reveal Impressive 2018 Lineup

Returning in 2018, the Melbourne Guitar Show has announced their lineup offering, and it boasts a seriously impressive array of local and international talent. UK guitar icon Albert Lee will bring his decades worth of wisdom and talent to the event, alongside local legend Jeff Lang, Daniel Champagne, Fiona Boyes, Alison Ferrier, and more. There’ll also be a monster exhibition showcasing everything from effects pedals, amps, and electric and acoustic guitars from some of the world’s leading manufacturers for guitar-lovers to lap up. The 2018 Melbourne Guitar Show goes down at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday August 4 and Sunday August 5.

The event took over Collingwood’s Besser Space for the weekend, providing a platform to celebrate the launch of the brand new Sonos One – the company’s slick new voicecontrolled smart speaker. The event offered punters the chance to trade an old speaker for a brand spanking new Sonos One, with a lucky 200 taking home the new gear. Scienceworks is locking out the kids for a one-off evening of late night fun. Featuring live sets from Pillow Pro, Biscotti and Future Fosil, the party – aptly titled Party Beyond – will meld live music, drinks, science, and tech from their huge 2018 exhibition, Beyond Perception: Seeing the Unseen. All the way from Kansas City, Listener are set to embark on a massive tour Down Under across September and October. Beginning in 2002 as a solo act, Listener soon evolved into a band of best friends that have toured extensively over the years playing their renowned brand of rock‘n’roll-infused ‘Talk Music.’ In the wake of their latest LP, Being Empty: Being Filled, Listener are visiting Australia as part of the heaving Yours and Owls Festival lineup, and while here the group will also take on ten headline dates. Perth’s Treehouses are set to come along for the tour as support, which will come into the Reverence Hotel on Saturday October 6.
US hip hop and R&B heavyweight Jhené Aiko has announced she’ll be gracing our shores, playing three massive arena shows in celebration of her recent release, Trip. Boasting a heaving cult following and with the critical success of her 2014 debut album, Souled Out – which debuted at #1 on the R&B album charts – Aiko’s most recent release was in hot demand. Her number of accolades also include featuring on tracks with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole and Drake and her debut EP in 2013, Sail Out, is the highest selling EP in record label Def Jam’s history. Aiko will shake up Margaret Court Arena on Sunday September 23.

Strawberry Fields Lift the Lid on This Year’s Headliner Strawberry Fields have revealed the headliner for their 2018 lineup, and it’s an absolute corker. Marking the tenth anniversary of the adored festival, US DJ and producer Honey Dijon will take to our shores for the very first time as festival headliner. Honey Dijon has carved a distinct niche for herself in the world of underground electronic music, coming to be associated with exquisitely curated cross-genre sets and total dancefloor chaos wherever she plays – which has been everywhere from the likes of Berlin’s Berghain Nightclub, Ibiza’s Space Nightclub or her hometown of Chicago’s Smart Bar. Locks in headline Australian dates
Spend the evening with the legendary actress and activist
Australian-born, LA-based singer-songwriter Conrad Sewell will soon tour his home country in celebration of his Ghosts & Heartaches bundle release. It’s the first music to come from Sewell since 2016, who has lent his signature vocals to big name tracks such as Kygo’s platinum single ‘Firestone’ and Avicii’s ‘Taste That Feeling’. ‘Healing Hands’, the lead single from the release, was created with the help of Stuart Crichton (Kygo, Kesha) and is soulful as anything, building to a gospel-like chorus with Sewell’s vocals soaring effortlessly over it all. Mitch James will join Sewell for the tour, which will come into Howler on Friday September 7.
Melbourne is about to get the chance to spend an evening with acclaimed actress and activist, Jane Fonda. Perhaps one of the most recognisable women of our time, with both Academy Awards and Oscars under her belt for her extensive work in film, and decades of activity in activism for women’s health and representation, Jane Fonda’s life and career is as remarkable as it is illustrious. She’ll be sharing her incredible story with our city in August, coming into Hamer Hall on Tuesday August 28. Tickets to the talk go sale on Monday June 18.

The Immigration Museum has announced it will host Mao’s Last Dancer: The Exhibition – celebrating dance, theatre, Chinese culture and the incredible story of Li Cunxin – AKA the title character of the famed book and film, Mao’s Last Dancer. Born into a poor rural Chinese village in the ‘60s, Cunxin trained vigorously in ballet and has gone on to become one of the most respected dancers in recent times. He now calls Australia home and is the Artistic Director of The Queensland Ballet, with the Immigration Museum’s exhibition set to showcase costumes, awards, audio-visual content and personal items from across his remarkable life and career. The Immigration Museum opens its doors to the exhibition on Saturday June 16.
Something For Kate singer Paul Dempsey has announced a string of intimate solo Victorian shows, set to go down in August. Dempsey has had a pretty massive year so far, having toured across Europe and the UK, so these stripped back shows will offer a change of pace for the singer, as well as the perfect chance for punters to catch the legend up close and personal. He’s set to perform renditions of tracks from his solo albums Strange Loop and Everything is True, with support coming from Fraser A. Gorman. Dempsey will play Belgrave’s Sooki Lounge on Thursday August 2, The Grand Hotel, Mornington on Friday August 3 and Theatre Royal, Castlemaine on Saturday August 4.

VB Hard Yards 2018 Offer Young Bands the Chance to Tour the East Coast With everything from support slots, venues, lighting, security, travel, accommodation and more to sort out, up-and-coming bands are often pushed out of the touring circle. That’s where the Victoria Bitter Hard Yards initiative comes in, which is set to return for another year in 2018. VB Hard Yards offers young bands the chance to play gigs across the east coast alongside massive headliners, with winners also receiving $5,000 cash and rehearsal room hire to get them geared for the tour. Bands from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland are invited to apply via the Victoria Bitter website and applications close on Sunday July 15. Punters will then be invited to vote on the shortlisted bands, before the Hard Yards’ full tour lineup is announced in August.

Brisbane trio Sweater Curse have let loose a new single entitled ‘Can’t See You Anymore’, and in usual single release fashion, the trio will be celebrating by setting off on tour next month. Sporting songs described as slightly depressing but still groovy, the introspective sparkly indie-rock band has mastered their own little niche sound with a throwback feel. Punters can look forward to Sweater Curse coming into The Gasometer Hotel on Friday July 27.
Sydney-based multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter, Exhibitionist (AKA Kirsty Tickle) has released an elegant and powerful EP, Let Go Of Love and announced she’ll be stepping out on a tour along the east coast to celebrate. The six-track EP tackles the many aspects of heartbreak and the exploration of self through intimate and immersive lyrics and instrumentation and, while it also features Tickle playing almost every instrument on the release – including flute, saxophone, clarinet, strings, piano and synth. Are putting on a free showcase of electronic music The Australian Music Vault is set to host Resonate - a free live electronic music event celebrating the creativity of the Melbourne Ableton User Group. The group – made up of local electronic musicians who use the Ableton software – has been meeting at the Arts Centre Melbourne’s hub, The Channel since 2012, bringing people to share and collaborate in the art of creating electronic music. The showcase will see a stack of Melbourne’s most exciting producers and performers take to the stage, including Arrom, Field Waves, Nhan Synthesis, Twofold Vision, ViVien and more. Are making their debut tour to Australia Mark January 2019 in your calendars – it’s set to mark the debut Australian shows for LA electronic duo The Black Queen. Harnessing both ‘80s-inspired pop sensibilities while also at times taking an ambient approach, The Black Queen formed in 2015 and promptly released their debut record Fever Daydream in 2016. Thus far their number of live appearances has been limited; however they’re set to take the plunge Down Under and will be bringing fellow LA two-piece Drab Majesty along with them for the ride. Heralded as a huge triumph after its debut at Sydney’s Belvoir Theatre in 2014, Jada Albert’s play Brothers Wreck has made it’s way to Melbourne for the first time. Playing a limited season at The Malthouse Theatre until Saturday June 23, the play follows teen Ruben as he struggles to deal with the shocking death of his brother, while his family try to pull him back from the brink. Set in the Northern Territory, where the rate of suicide is three and a half times the national average, Brothers Wreck is a poignant and surprisingly uplifting piece of theatre. The Artists Guild is an art hub dedicated to female artists, offering peer support and collaboration through co-creating sessions, artistic circles, group exhibitions and workshops. Beginning this Sunday June 17, the guild’s workspace, shop and gallery will be open to the public on a weekly basis, offering a chance for art lovers to mingle with the artists and view and discuss their work. When you think of Melbourne it’s possible that images of laneway cafés spring to mind, or perhaps it’s the river, the trams, Formula One or the oft-cited statistics that place the city as the world’s most liveable. But for anyone with a passing interest in one of Melbourne’s most vital pillars — the thriving music scene — there’s a single annual event that represents Melbourne at its best. The Reclink Community Cup combines many of our obsessions into a day full of music, AFL, booze, dogs, family, friendly competition–and it’sall in the name of charity. “It’s the whole of Melbourne coming together and realising that one, we love footy,” says Rosco Elliot of the Rockdogs, and who plays music under the moniker Spike the River. “And two, there’s so many people involved in this–the volunteers, Reclink–that it means so much to so many people. I think everyone forgets everything for one day and just comes together and sinks tinnies. It’s such a beautiful thing.” The game pits the same two sides against one another each year–musicians form the Rockdogs, while the Megahertz are made up of the city’s music media–and specifically announcers from PBS FM and Triple R. It’s a faux-rivalry to stand the test of time and one that’s indicative of the positive spirits surrounding the event. “I think how you actually look at it is, the Rockdogs are the devil,” jokes this year’s Megahertz Captain, Ruby Koomen. “There’s that big drinking culture and all that stuff. Then the Megahertz, obviously they’re massive rock’n’rollers as well, but there seems to be something angelic about them. Definitely the dark and the light side.” Koomen is in a position of authority to speak on the matter, as both the presenter of PBS’ Garageland show and the guitarist in rock band Bitch Diesel, she has fought on both sides, with this year marking her return to the Megahertz after three years. Although both sides like to give each other stick, the genuine affection is evident, as it is for the event itself. “There has been quite a bit of rivalry over the years and we’re trying to bring it back to the community vibe,” says Koomen. “Last year, I had a moment in my last quarter, I ended up getting a jersey made that was half/half and ended up playing the joker card and running around with the half/ half jersey on.” Having initially been held on the south side, last year’s inaugural northern match sold out the 12,000 capacity Victoria Park, and with weekly training having begun in March, a certain amount of pressure felt by the amateur players is understandable. However, both teams are determined to not let the excitement of the atmosphere distract them from what the day is all about. “It is a game of footy, but

to me it’s really easy to play hard, competitive footy and not be a dickhead,” says Elliot. “I think it’s so much more important for everyone to be coming together and showing that footy and music can go together in a really beautiful way. It shows what the AFL really could be if it really tried. So go for the ball, do everything you can to win, but at the same time you’ve really got to understand that this is all for charity, all for fun, and we all want to put a show on for the crowd as well.” The charity in question is Reclink, and every year the match raises funds for at-risk youth, people experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, substance or gambling addictions and those with mental illness or disabilities. Since the inaugural Cup in 1993, the match raises $200,000 each year, a monumental figure. The event has been so successful that the past six years has seen it expand to include games in Brisbane, Hobart, Adelaide, Sydney, Fremantle and Canberra, with some players making the trek to represent their side interstate. “Two years ago was my first year and I played in Adelaide and Sydney and Brisbane,” says Elliot. “It’s still in their very early stages, they’re trying to grow it bigger and bigger, but Adelaide was an absolute dream, I had the best time ever. Tim Rogers was our coach there, and he’s actually just agreed to come back in the room and do his thing for our game so that’s very exciting.” With live music on the day being provided by Hiatus Kaiyote, Cable Ties, The Aints, Kutcha Edwards, The Cartridge Family and Rudely Interrupted, the $20 entry guarantees a great show –even for those decidedly uninterested in football. “At the end of the day it doesn’t matter who wins, everyone in the community is a winner,” says Koomen. “Just going and watching the shittest game of football but having a really good time and having a laugh that your favourite radio presenters or your favourite musicians are out there. I had to give a speech the other day and I was like ‘Look guys, if you want to tackle, that’s fine but make sure you give everyone a pash on the way down.’ That’s what it’s about, it’s a love revolution.”

SONOS ONE
This is what happened when SONOS gave away 200 free speakers
You may have noticed a multitude of posters and murals featuring a pop art style set of mouths appearing around the city and wondered to yourself what it was all about. The mouths indicate the bold direction audio visionaries Sonos are taking with their new voice–controlled smart speaker, the Sonos One, and in celebration of its release the company teamed up with local artist Carla McRae to paint the town red (lipped). Sonos originally joined forces with Japanbased artist Karan Singh for the design, one vaguely reminiscent of the iconic Rolling Stones emblem – albeit a bit less cheeky than the signature tongue wagging rock’n’roll stamp – bringing a Melbourne-inspired spin with local artist McRae affording the logo her own style and a splash of colour to boot. The Sonos One is the smart speaker for music lovers, a tool for sharing and experiencing music as it should be, so it was only fitting that the speaker was unveiled to the public in an equally celebratory fashion. Over the first weekend of June, Sonos hosted a two–day launch party within Collingwood’s stylish Besser Space which was transformed into a creative hub of music, art, coffee and, above all, the new Sonos One. The speaker is a combination of technology, audio quality and aesthetic design; melding Sonos’ renowned high standards for sound quality with voice-controlled technology featuring Amazon Alexa, and a compact, sleek design, making it the perfect fit for any space you wish to fill with music. The main attraction on day one of the launch was Sonos’ inaugural Dumb Speaker Amnesty in which attendees were invited to bring along their old speakers and trade them in for a brand new Sonos One. Hundreds of Melburnians lined up on Saturday morning for the chance–preloved speakers in hand– ready for an upgrade. Patiently waiting for a new vessel to carry their favourite tunes – and a responsible form of disposal for their dust-gathering, wellused devices – the line of enthusiastic music listeners snaked it’s way through Besser Space as the team handed out 200 new speakers. The old speakers were upcycled into a sculpture by fellow Melbourne artist George Rose who crafted a large scale art piece featuring the signature Sonos mouth within the studio. 16

In the same theme of celebrating local artists, prints of McRae’s Melbourne murals were on display around the space, each featuring the Sonos lips, bursts of colours and clean, geometric lines. Come Sunday, McRae herself joined the studio, paintbrush in hand, to conduct a live canvas painting. The artwork McRae crafted within Besser Space in front of onlookers was anyone’s for the taking thanks to a charity auction. The proceeds of the artwork’s sale would then be donated to The Song Room; a not-for-profit organisation aiding disadvantaged young people through musicbased educational programs. Of course, one cannot properly launch an audio device without some music, so Sonos called in up–and–coming Melbourne DJs, Human Movement, to curate a fitting playlist for the occasion while, in true Melbourne spirit, free coffee flowed. For those who didn’t nab a free Sonos One, there were a heap of goodies to be scored across the two–day affair with Sonos kindly giving out vouchers to multiple attendees. In all, spirits were high as everyone absorbed the atmosphere celebrating music, art and a general togetherness, something that Sonos deliver in spades with the Sonos One. A speaker may just seem like a means to an end, a solution to your smartphone’s problem of inept sound quality and limited volume strength, but think about the way you use music and, in turn, a speaker to soundtrack moments in your life. Whether it’s dialled down, background music to accompany dinner with family, your favourite-feel good tunes amping up a party with friends, or even dancing around the house on your own as you blast your secret guilty pleasure playlist – music is an integral component in the way we experience life and the special moments within it, which is something Sonos hope to be accomplice to. Savers X Beat: Crate Diggers with Swerv
Welcome to Crate Diggers – our new collaborative series with Savers. Each week, follow us as we team up with some of Melbourne’s most inventive producers. Their mission? To raid the vinyl section of Savers, pick some records, sample those bad boys and make a brand new track from scratch. They’ll be taking us through the entire process, as well as premiering the track with us online each week. Let’s dig. This week, local beatmaker Swerv took to the crates. Recently leaving his day job to pursue music production as a career, Swerv has established himself through collaborations with Jordan Dennis, Rahel, and Blasko. During his time off he loves to eat pizza and hang with his cat Prince. You can find him spinning the latest hip hop tunes at YoYo every Saturday in Melbourne. Check out his tune ‘Pistol Shrimp’ on our website. What records did you dig out? I picked some local Melbourne jazz, Russian orchestral music from the ‘50s, novelty English pop ( Jive Bunny) and ‘80s rock. How did you decide which records you were going to take home with you? My intention was to find interesting sounds and textures that I’ve never come across before. I purely went off the cover of some, the instruments listed on each record and my girlfriend randomly chose one. What is your beatmaking process? First I find a sample that sparks my interest. Then I chop it up so it’s a vibe and give it some bounce with percussion. I lay some bass and then create changes to keep the ear interested. A lot of my music has lots of small background noises that actually make the track. Without them, the tune would be empty. That’s my secret sauce and I just told everyone. How did you approach this sampling process? This was a challenge because I generally compose my music from scratch. I looked at it from a musical point of view so I sampled snippets of bass lines, drums, vocals and

anything that I could build off. The winner was this killer jazz chord progression from Boz Scaggz, that’s actually a rock record. What does it take to be a good producer? Making music that’s true to your soul, always wanting to learn and sharing your knowledge with the community. Nowadays it’s not enough to just call yourself a producer. You need to network so you get in with the right people, build your online presence and support the local scene. Once you’re ready to release you’ll have a place to market your music and a community to push what you do. What are overrated pieces of advice or complete myths? That you can run on pure talent alone. Eventually the person with more drive is going to catch up to you in skill and do more than you. What was your initial listening/planning process? I maximise my creative flow by separating my activities and not wearing too many hats at once. I’ll spend some time preparing for a session by searching for sounds and ideas then take a break. After that I’ll come back and purely focus on production. Organisation helps you stay in the zone by minimising distractions. What mood or feeling were you trying to create? Initially it was frustrating because I stopped vibing the samples I found, so I had to go back to listen to the records again to find something that I could work with. Once I found the right sounds everything became a lot easier and I was in my zone.
What limitations can come from working with random selections? I think this depends on the type of producer you are. I always build my songs based off vibe. If I have a batch of random selections that I’m not vibing then it’ll be hard for me to work with them. However, I don’t really see it as a limitation, because it forces you to work with something new. If you had one piece of wisdom to share with aspiring producers, what would it be? Be gentle and don’t compare yourself to the producers you look up to who have spent thousands of hours on their craft. It’s also OK to mimic your favourite producers at the start because eventually you’ll find your own sound. Do you have any regrets as a producer? I left my day job one and a half months ago to be a full time music producer. I have no regrets. What projects are you currently working on? At the moment I’ve formed a duo with a singer named Rahel – she also left her hometown in Brisbane to move here and do this full time. I also produce for Jordan Dennis and Blasko. Are we likely to run into you at Savers picking up more records? Definitely. This was a great challenge and I’ve learned new ways of working with samples now. What’s so great about Savers’ collection? If you really want to test your production skills at a bargain, Savers is a good place to start.

Starman In 2013, Sven Ratzke was struck by inspiration. Having spent the years prior traversing the world’s stages performing the classic songs of Bretch and Weill and making himself over in drag to depict the tale of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Ratzke was suddenly lured to take a different path. He, like many creatives before him, was struck by the enigmatic force of David Bowie. Having always admired the work of Bowie, Ratzke decided his next project would be to tell the story of one of the world’s most iconoclastic musicians and performers. “Bowie was always in my life, but suddenly it all made sense: he thinks like me, he’s inspired by all these puzzle pieces like me,” says Ratzke. “I wanted to get to know him and the riddle, the mask – especially in the ‘70s. I found him terribly interesting. He was an enigma; what is true? What is fantasy? “[I admire] that he constantly evolved, that he took risks. He never stood still. That’s an enormous inspiration. I think that’s why he’s so loved. In the end that’s so much more valuable and that will also go into history. Dare to chance, dare to be different – that’s why Bowie is such a cultural influencer.” The result, Starman, is a far cry from a simple tribute show – which is something Ratzke aimed to steer clear of. Instead, he reimagines Bowie’s career-defining tracks, melding them with songs of his own against a strong underlying storyline. Taking the audience from London to New York, Los Angeles and Berlin, the performance tells a tale of Bowie’s own journey through life and stardom. “The show is like a trip, I take the audience on a journey,” says Ratzke. “Lots of people think it’s all made up, but the fantasy is based on facts of Bowie’s encounters and beings. It’s like a dream. We meet Andy Warhol as a little white rabbit that takes us
into the underground in New York City, we meet Elisabeth Taylor and her wax figure cabinet in LA, [then] we end up in a drag bar in Berlin. “I mix the universe of Bowie with mine and the show is, in the end, a very entertaining show with music that you might know, but not in these versions. It’s like a woman said lately: ‘I came for Bowie and left with Sven.’” Starman has been Ratzke’s baby for over half a decade now, having taken two years to perfect in its writing stages before premiering in 2015. Despite toting the show around the world, it’s yet to grow stale. Ratzke attributes the show’s longevity to a number of factors, including the rich storyline that carries the performance and the elements of himself he has injected into the show. While Ratzke spends much of the year – 48 weeks to be precise – touring, he never milks a particular show, no matter its success, opting to alternate between different projects instead. “I would never perform Starman like a musical, seven shows a week. Then the soul disappears,” he says. To Ratzke, performing is a necessity akin to living and breathing and allows him to take on a
different persona than that of his own comparatively quiet and subdued nature. His passion for his craft grew from performing atop his family dinner table at five years old and has continued to flourish from there. He describes the force of being onstage as “theatrical acid” – a force which is equally powerful to witness and one shared by his muse. “When he was still alive he gave permission for the show. That was the ultimate blessing for this show,” says Ratzke. “A lot of his New York friends and collaborators saw the show in New York and said ‘He would’ve loved it ‘cause you are wicked, you have lots of humour and it’s different and daring, and that was Bowie.’ He never repeated himself and was looking for new stuff constantly. I know he’s watching us from up there every night when we are on stage.”

Middle Kids’ new record isn’t a live album, but it’s not quite a studio album either. When the Sydney trio couldn’t find the right vibe in the studio, they started recording at home instead.

“We’re used to making the songs in our house, doing it in our time,” says vocalist Hannah Joy. “We felt comfortable in that environment. We did it like a patchwork quilt, and built it slowly in different places. It retains some of that same organic sound, but you can feel the growth and the movement.” After recording guitar, bass and keyboards at home, the band rented a house outside rural Portland, New South Wales, where they finished the percussion tracks. The result was Lost Friends, a slice of classic indie-pop, driven by Joy’s tender vocals and memorable guitar riffs. “This is an optimistic album,” Joy says. “The big theme is trying to find peace in all the craziness of life. We’re often shocked that life is painful. It’s beautiful and amazing, but often you feel shocked that life is hard. But it’s been crazy since the dawn of time. So much of our work is to find the joy, to find the hope, in the midst of the craziness.” The question of whether Middle Kids’ next album will be recorded in an actual studio is still up in the air, Joy says. This time, the band was prepared for the recording process to be a slog, but was surprised to find the music emerging smoothly. “In many ways, the album came together pretty easily,” Joy says. “We loved making this album. It was a really wonderful experience in terms of the way it

came together. Maybe it’ll be more challenging with our second album.” Leading up to the album’s release ‘Mistake’, a single riding the line between indie and post-rock, had already snagged some good press. But Joy says she isn’t too fussed one way or the other about reviews and star ratings. “We do hope [the media] like it, but it feels more meaningful when you can see that it’s connecting with people,” she says. “That’s a good litmus test: when we’re playing shows, are we making a connection? A lot of the songs on the album are quite sing-song. They’re meant to help you lift your voice, so, when people do that, you can tell that they’re feeling something.” While the record showcases Middle Kids at their best, it’s on the live stage that the trio really shine. Despite being Sydney natives, Middle Kids have a real affection for Melbourne intimate live spots like Howler and The Corner Hotel. “We love playing Melbourne,” Joy says. “There seem to be more of those smaller, cooler venues in Melbourne, and people like going to see live music. The energy’s good. Because it’s a home crowd in Sydney, the energy’s a little more rowdy, and Melbourne are more respectful.”
Their upcoming run of shows – including stops right across the States, before returning to our shores for Splendour in the Grass, and then darting over to Europe – will give the band some time to mull over the question of their next album. “It’s cool when you get to record and tour, because you get new musical ideas when you’re on the road,” she explains. “I’m excited to start consolidating that. I reckon we’ll keep trying in the studio, because we want the sound to grow. We don’t want to get stuck. As soon as we feel that that’s the case, we’ll get a new space. The B.East’s Sixth Birthday Six to eight years ago, the Melbourne suburbs of Carlton, East Brunswick and Coburg transitioned from grubby beerstained slurps of cool, to architecturally aware and contemporary spots with a vintage feel. The bars, restaurants, band venues and pubs that lined streets like Lygon Street had to evolve or dissolve, and these dissolutions were replaced by new hospitality offerings that satisfied a hunger for authentic, multi-faceted cultural experiences. One such “new-kid-on the-block” to spring up six years ago on Lygon Street – between the Barkly and Edward Street intersections – was The B.East. A lush semi-vegetated facade gives way to a burger joint and bar that doubles as a band venue more nights than it doesn’t. “It’s such a unique space because it has developed organically yet is perfectly providing an evolution from what was there before to something unassumingly contemporary that is inviting to a new generation,” explains B.East marketing and promotions manager, Pablo Andreas. He’s chatting to Beat ahead of the venue’s sixth birthday celebration, which is set to feature an expanded offering of the elements that have placed the venue in a rare air: performances from Bob Log III, The Stiffys, Pam Salmon, plus drag act The Beastie

Girls. It also comes combined with drink offerings from East 9th Brewing / Doss Blockos, el Jimador Tequila and Young Henrys to name just a few. Plus, as Andreas explains, “there’ll be burgers coming out of the kitchen and wings and other stuff all night – the kitchen’s open real late.” The B.East’s food offering is a thing of both pleasure and pain for Andreas. It’s because in his other life – as lead singer and guitarist for local punk band Mesa Cosa – he’s been sometimes faced with the dilemma of whether to eat his beloved Holy Cheezus burger before he goes on stage when playing at the venue. “Don’t do it. Even if you are really hungry and think you can deal with it,” he says. “Our drummer seems to never learn, he’ll munch down a burger and then not even halfway through a set look at me forlornly and say ‘what have I done?’” The Stiffys singer and guitarist, Jason Leigh, now chimes in that his band doesn’t eat before a show so as to leave room for all the drinks. Pressed on how many drinks The Stiffys need during a gig, the frontman of the self-proclaimed, number-one party band in Melbourne has a good story on the topic.
“This year we were playing at Falls Festival on a stage that gave us as much Jack Daniels as we could handle and then more. It was just insane,” Leigh explains. “Our blood alcohol level would have been nudging 99 percent. We had consumed so many Jack & Cokes we legitimately thought we’d wake up with diabetes. “So we finish playing and head to the guest bar in the backstage area and the first thing we see is Liam Gallagher standing at a coke machine.” So what did the, again self-proclaimed, ‘biggest fucking rock stars in Melbourne’ say to the biggest rock star in the world? “Nothing, we just froze. The party boys had become shy boys,” Leigh says. With his cocksure bravado well and truly tempered Leigh concedes, “that was actually a shit story.”
The B.East’s sixth birthday bash will go down Saturday June 16 with performances from Bob Log III, The Stiffys, Pam Salmon and The Beastie Girls. Head there from 7pm.

The Midwayers “People tend to say that when they’ve listened to us they feel they’ve gotten to know us because we’re honest with our lyrics.”
Seasons: Vol. 1, the debut album from The Midwayers is awash with movement and paints a pretty picture of a natural state of being, lyrically, thematically, and physically. Imagery plays a massive part in this release and is applied to all areas of life with a wonderfully pensive indie-folk sound. “Spot on,” Brendon Mellere, the band’s vocalist and guitarist, says of the description. “My brother and I [vocalist and keys, Tyson Richardson] went through a massive hippie stage when we were younger. We’ve gone through a lot of walks of life. I was screaming metal before I knew I could sing. “It seems the older I’ve gotten, the less I’ve screamed and the more I’ve sung. We think it’s for the better.” Seasons: Volume 1 is a hippie-inspired, sure, but in developing this album The Midwayers have found their centre. “We listened to so many different styles of music growing up,” says Mellere. “Our styles are quite different, but when we started playing together it all clicked, it worked so well.” So this is how The Midwayers roll – authentic, honest and oozing with creative flair – and it’s what they feel the world needs, to be stripped back to basics, and to be in touch with life. “We don’t want to be whingey about emotions and stuff, but we do love nature, we do love being out in the sticks and try and relate our lyrics to it all.” Mellere and the music of The Midwayers will

certainly strike as being very pensive but there was a journey to be had to reach this point. “I’ll be honest,” Mellere begins, “I had a lot of anger issues when I was younger. Music was a massive release. I think it’s similar for my brother. I don’t know, we look at the world and go, ‘It’s pretty out of whack, morally.’ Our way of getting that out is in our lyrics.” It’s evident in their music – listening to opener ‘Soar’, that if good feelings weren’t surfacing on hearing it, they certainly do when you watch the accompanying video. Uplifting and happy, the carefree and breezy nature of the video encompasses The Midwayer’s characters but also sees their love and passion for the real extend into other creative mediums as they take on videography and artwork duties themselves. “I do all our artwork, all those paintings you see,” Mellere says. “Tyson does all our video, he’s a natural, he absolutely loves it.” This trio have a free spirit, and that nature is exposed and explained in their music Mellere says. “When we touch on something that might be really personal we tend to write a bit more metaphorically, but we try not to offend.” As a concept album, Seasons: Volume 1. is rife with metaphors. “It was about trying to write and
record songs about every season, taking it from the vibe of each season – we’ve done that over the past 14 months. We put it all together on this album, the last year, every three months, writing and recording different parts. There’s a lot of differences in sound, which made mastering difficult because every season sounded different. But it all came together as a whole, a year in sound.” You might say The Midwayers have rewritten Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, with a folk-rock leaning, bringing their story together in sight and sound. “On the album artwork there’s a tree. Every image of each season was [depicted] in a quarter of that tree. When you bring each quarter together, you have a whole image,” Mellere says. “It’s been a hard journey – I have a five year old and a six-week-old baby – a pretty intense journey. It’s taken time to get balance but it’s good. This is good.” BY ANNA ROSE

“Touring is another kettle of fish, because you’re exposed. It’s the opposite of being in the studio: you’re out there, and you can’t really keep your secrets.”
When Magic Dirt frontwoman Adalita started recording her third solo album in 2015, she had no idea she’d still be wrestling with it three years later. The album–a meditation on unrequited love–has proved to be the most technically challenging musical project the singer-songwriter has tackled since Magic Dirt broke into the alternative scene in the ‘90s. Until now, Adalita has kept details on the album under wraps. She plans to give her new material a first road test in a series of Australian shows, including a stop by the Yarraville Club, supported by indieelectronic artist Amaya Laucirica. “It’s great playing new stuff in front of the crowd,” Adalita says. “It bounces back at you, and you get a feeling for it. It’ll be a good gauge for me.” The Geelong native usually begins songwriting with some extemporaneous strumming at home. For this new album, she tried a new approach. “I wanted to try writing the way I perform,” Adalita explains. “In a rehearsal room, it’s almost like I’m doing a show: the vocals are really loud, the guitar’s really loud, there’s reverb. It’s got a whole vibe that I really love. I thought, ‘I’m going to write standing up, as though I’m performing.’ I’d never written like that before, and it was really cool fun. I really sang my little heart out.” The album – a confection of dark-edged altrock with a clean, stripped-back sound – has proved a technical challenge, and has required a lot of reworking to get right, Adalita reveals. The album ought to be out by the end of 2018 – give or take.
For Adalita, even during trying periods, the studio is a second home. “I usually love recording, because you’re in your bubble, and you’re controlling the environment,” she says. “It’s a little secret world, and I like that a lot. Touring is another kettle of fish, because you’re exposed. It’s the opposite of being in the studio: you’re out there, and you can’t really keep your secrets. You’ve got to be vulnerable and open and giving. I still feel the nerves. Sometimes, I don’t know why I get up there, because it’s so traumatic. Particularly when you’re doing solo shows, you’re so exposed and everything is just out there. You’ve got to have nerves of steel to get up there, but I love it.” Adalita’s current tour combines material from 2011’s ARIA award-winning Adalita and 2013’s All Day Venus with tracks from the new album. “I’m pretty casual,” Adalita says. “The songs are pretty heavy, pretty emotional, so it’s not a happy-golucky show. It’s pretty serious stuff, but a couple of the songs are upbeat, so we’ll have a good time too.” When she was younger, Adalita dreamed of working behind the scenes as a movie director. She rekindled this love of the visual arts on tour with
Barbarion
Magic Dirt, when she bought a camera – a high-end Canon EOS 5D Mark II – and started snapping. “It kind of crept up on me,” she says. “When I started shooting with the Canon, I had exactly the same feeling coming at me as when I bought my first guitar. I just fell in love straight away. I got obsessed. I’ll just take a thousand shots and then, when I get home, I’ll be so excited to load them up and so excited to look through them all. It’s a ritual that I just love.” As a photographer, Adalita gets some respite from the limelight, and enjoys capturing portraits and urban landscape scenes – recording a moment in the history of Melbourne as the CBD is constantly altered through demolitions and renovations. An Adalita photo book is a possibility at some point, she suggests. “Whenever Magic Dirt or I do videos, I love being behind the scenes,” Adalita says. “I love observing. There’s a part of me that feels very comfortable behind the lens. Being invisible is my MO, but then, yes, there’s that other part of me that is a total exhibitionist.”

Ten years, that’s a long time. How did it all start for Barbarion? It’s a bloody long time. It all started with lead singer Myles Tauchert confronting us all and informing us that we were in the band and there was nothing we could do about it. What are your memories of that first warehouse show in East Brunswick? A couple of hundred people turning up to see a group of grown, overweight men dressed up like warriors. We had two bass players, two singers, two guitarists, one drummer, and no idea what we were doing. What have been some of the most memorable moments of the last decade? The Big Day Out tour in 2011, especially when a colony of ants moved in on Myles’ putrid stinking costume in Adelaide. Meredith 2011 was a big moment for us, and our tour of Europe in 2013 was an eating frenzy to behold. You haven’t seen eating until you’ve seen former singer Frankie Gionfriddo clean up a pork knuckle. What are some of the biggest changes you’ve witnessed? Good live music venues and festivals disappearing, a proliferation of vegan eateries, and pots of beer for more than $5. It’s not all bad though, something good must’ve happened in that time. Oh yeah, Australia in Eurovision, we’re still waiting for our call up. What can we expect from your anniversary show? Fur, beer, fire, dancing, more beer, self-indulgent guitar solos, fat guys, more fire, special guests, new tracks, togas, air guitar, plenty more beer, and a bloody good time. Barbarion will celebrate their ten year anniversary at The Tote on Saturday June 23, supported by Toga Rock and the Victorian Qualifiers for the Australian Air Guitar Championships.

You mightn’t have realised it, but you wanted to hear this. We all did. The sensibilities of father and son are so deftly entwined they become inextricable. Rooted in the earthy psychedelics of Neil’s Dizzy Heights LP, ‘Back to Life’ unfurls a succession of pleasing paradoxes. It’s melodically grand, but brandishing lo-fi textures; the sound remains spacious despite baroque instrumental flourishes; and the vocals are openly sentimental yet steeped in ambiguity. 5 in the Morning (Asylum/Warner) Charli XCX is more than qualified to ascend into the nowpop elite. We should probably treasure this time before her music becomes absolutely ubiquitous. Here, the British singer reconnects with ‘Fancy’ producers Invisible Men on a trapinscribed testament to her superiority. Although lacking the outré fun of last year’s Pop 2 collection, ‘5 in the Morning’ further cements Charli’s versatility, backing up the lyric “I only fuck with the ones who are rare enough, real enough, down to keep going.”

Give Yourself A Try (Sony) The 1975 aren’t as disposable as Bastille or as irredeemably haughty as Thirty Seconds to Mars, but they do invite such comparisons. ‘Give Yourself A Try’ has a bit of a Nordic gothpop vibe, which suits them. But it’s still hard to gauge the band’s self-awareness – if they’re intentionally making post-punk for the Lego universe then good on ‘em, otherwise Matthew Healy’s earnestness runs a bit thin. This is frustratingly infectious, though.
Moaning Lisa
Good (Hysterical) Moaning Lisa’s ‘Carrie (I Want A Girl)’ was a certified power pop stinker (good thing). On its follow-up, the Canberrans venture into angular shoegaze territory. The texture recalls Slowdive, but the song doesn’t rely too heavily on ‘90s references, much to its benefit. The vocals, guitars and bass all throw in melodic input, swaddling listeners in a sonic web that gets cosier with each listen.

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever have quickly carved out a unique slice of Australian jangle-pop over two charmingly droll EPs in two years, earning Pitchfork-approved comparisons to ‘80s heroes The Go Betweens.

Hope Downs
On their debut full-length Hope Downs, the band have sculpted the unique grit of their EP’s into beguiling guitar pop. Hope Downs seeks escapist relief from life’s rigid obligations, decrying mindless comfort on ‘Air Conditioned Man’ and avoidant jargon on ‘Talking Straight’. Each track fish-eyes innocuous moments to broach subjects far broader than any blunt declaratory love song ever could. The existentialism permeating the record would fit stony-faced folk rock just as well, but the pirouetting jangle-pop is an exercise in escapism itself. Taken all at once, the record’s guitar-rock can tend to uniformity, however it’s hard to fault each track’s immaculate composition. The slide guitar that helms ‘Sister’s Jeans’ forms a heady expanse worthy of Ride’s Nowhere, while third single ‘Hammer’ builds jittery punk tension into hefty pop release that’s almost laughably catchy. Hope Downs feels as suited to a night alone in a Melburnian June as to a sandy summer beach party. Effortlessly quotable and riotously fun, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever are well poised to be this year’s premier Oz rock export. BY JOSHUA MARTIN

Bombino
Recovery EP
Oumara Moctar, otherwise known as Bombino, freely crafts an infectious sound of desert blues all of his own. His new album Deran is yet another project that finds the guitarist bending and twisting his fingers across ten tracks. The opening song ‘Imajghane’ reintroduces the listener into Bombino’s world. There’s a recognizable reggae fusion beat to the song that’s carried by a jumpy bass line and, of course, Bombino’s conversational guitar playing. Bombino is a wizard at having his guitar sing beside him. That’s true on tracks like ‘Tenesse’ and ‘Takamba’. Bombino sings in Tamasheq, the language of the Tuareg people that is spoken across the Sahara. The language is poetic and nimble, with gentle cadences. Several moments on Deran dance like preserved proverbs or hymns put to record. Take ‘Adounia Idagh’, with its handclaps and hand drums sung by Bombino and accompanying singers. These more lucid moments trade Bombino’s Western tendencies for loving African embraces. The song ‘Midiwan’ punctuates this point. Overall, this project is another beautiful import of African blues picked near-perfectly by this sultan of shred.

Sugar & Spice EP
Dream State’s new record is five songs of earnest attempts at creating rock epics. Despite the best efforts, this is unlikely to set the alt-rock world alight. A lot of screaming searches to underpin and map out some melodic glory. Sadly it all sounds rather leaden and lethargic. Of course it all rocks out in a manly fashion and songs such as ‘White Lies’, ‘Solace’ or ‘In This Hell’ may hold deep meaning to some people and are undeniably heady and delivered with enthusiasm, but at times the emotional extravagance becomes a little embarrassing. The eagerness to please therefore contains some titanic hooks, and some searing energy in a live forum may lead to moshpit levels of frothing hysteria and no frills fury. “I got myself lost again,” they howl in ‘White Lies’ and this is due to chasing the white lights and fighting their addictions. The production values are top-shelf and the result is wild and raw, but the ear splitting delirium wears thin due to the repetition of the theme. There is stateliness to some of what they desire to do, but unfortunately the repeated bludgeoning of the same ideas doesn’t allow them to get away with it. BY BRONIUS ZUMERIS

Brisbane’s Hatchie has rejuvenated the dream pop genre with their debut EP, Sugar & Spice. Frontwoman Harriette Pilbeam has constructed a sound that’s somehow reminiscent of high school, John Hughes and Toronto’s Ralph, with a hint of The 1975’s neon electricity thrown in for good measure. Sugar & Spice is a well-crafted, expertly produced EP that gives great promise to a full-length. Four of the five songs were singles; ‘Try’ was unsurprisingly the most commercially popular release – a synth-laden banger with soft harmonies that pair perfectly with the song’s sentiment. ‘Bad Guy’ closes off the record; the slow, simple backbeat gives the solemn lyrics extra weight. It ties off the EP as an ambitious ballad that could be played on a melancholy rainyday train ride home, or blasted from a boombox over John Cusack’s greasy, ‘89 hairdo. The debut lacks any huge red flags – authentic lyrics and great production are well received. However, the songs (with the exception of ‘Bad Guy’) tend to blur together. Overall, it’s a great release from a new artist – we should be excited to see what Hatchie gets up to next, albeit wary of the newcomers straying too close to those who’ve come before them. Opening track ‘Velcro’ introduces the listener to the band’s tenacious yet smooth method of songwriting. The song’s opening synths feel like a tidal wave of tranquility that crash into the song’s punchy beat. This is the great part of Approachable Members’ sound. They balance the soothing textures of wavey synths and shimmering guitar parts with the dynamic sounds of animated drum beats and horn-section belts. ‘Daydreams’ is a testament to this, with a strong dance drum beat appearing under soft synth stabs There’s no doubt that the hook of ‘Millenium Queen’ will be stuck in your head, thanks to the vocal’s half sung, half rapped style of delivery. The lyrics throughout the EP are snarky and observational, creating vivid imagery for the brilliant instrumentation to work with. Most have probably already heard the infectiously catchy chorus of ‘Semiotic Vision.’ The single acts as a memorable and funky penultimate number to the EP. Closer ‘(Fuck You) I Love You’ is a snide anti-love song with an outstanding guitar and synth duet.
When a young upstart named Courtney Barnett was first touring the east coast in the early 2010s, she was performing alongside a drummer, Oliver Mestitz. He’d go on to form The Finks – an understated, lo-fi solo project with a heavy emphasis on minutiae lyricism and storytelling. Barnett went on to... well, you know. It’s easy to see Mestitz as the Garfunkel of the situation, but anyone who’s paid close attention knows he is just as formidable a songwriter as his former touring partner. His third LP under the moniker brings more attention to the composition side of things, both in terms of fleshing out full-band arrangements and allowing for instrumental numbers to generate a further sense of place and ambience within the tracklisting. Mestitz also enlists vocalist Sarah Farquharson, who quietly stole the show on 2016’s Middling and threatens to do so again here on numbers like ‘Charlie’s Manifesto’ and ‘Fantasies Fade’. There’s a vulnerability to The Finks’ music – a quaint honesty, plain yet powerful in the same way that a Grant McLennan or a Paul Kelly may impart. With Rolly Nice, it’s a warm and welcome return from potentially the most underrated act in Australian music.

Seven years separate Wildness from its predecessor, Fallen Empires. A lot has changed both internally and externally around Snow Patrol in those years, with frontman Gary Lightbody only occasionally popping his head up at a Taylor Swift or Ed Sheeran show. The latter keeps springing to mind as one listens to Wildness – perhaps a sense that Lightbody wanted to know what it felt like to have an arena singing something back to him again. As such, it’s an album with all the slickness and finesse of their breakthrough Eyes Open – but, tellingly, none of its craftsmanship. Somewhere along the way, Lightbody and co. appear to have forgotten that simply peppering songs with bright major chords and “woah-oh-oh”s does not an anthem make. There’s an art to it. Embarrassingly, the album sounds less like Snow Patrol at some points and more like Imagine Dragons – see ‘A Dark Switch’ or ‘Heal Me’. The sole highlight, ‘Life on Earth’, is frontloaded at the start of the record. Beyond that, you’re left longing – and, more importantly, bored. Wildness is an album that’s inherently antithetical to its name; a low-risk and low-reward effort from a band capable of much more. BY DAVID JAMES YOUNG
