As we approach the end of winter, it can only mean one thing (and no I’m not talking about finally getting to wear only two layers of clothing at a time – though being able to lift my arms above my head is definitely something I’m looking forward to), I’m of course talking about our favourite southside music celebration Live N Local. The program is huge, full of treat after treat to suit every music lover – no matter age or taste (head to page 17 to see what I mean). As a special bonus, James and I put our heads and ears together to help kick off the festivities in fine form with Beat at the Bowlo – it’s got everything you could want for your Saturday: incredible bands, cheap drinks, and barefoot bowls. Get to know all the bands we’re bringing together, then come and join us on the day. While you get excited for everything Live N Local you can also find out more about Footscray City Films, Dirty Pennies Theatre Project’s Pramkicker, take a deep dive into Prince’s back catalogue, hear from Scooter frontman H.P. Baxxter – and that is only the beginning. I better go and see if I can find a matching pair of socks. I’ll see you on the greens!

News Meredith Music Festival Lifts the Lid on Their 2018 Lineup Offering Meredith Music Festival has revealed the first of the acts set to take to this year’s festival – and it’s looking to be a bloody beauty. Now in its 28th year, Meredith will see the Meredith Supernatural Amphitheatre taken over by a melting pot of artists including homegrown punk lords The Saints and South London rapper Nadia Rose, as well as Mambali, Yaeji, Pond, Laura Jean, The Seven Ups, Panda Bear, The Breeders, Mildlife, and stacks more. Still one of the few festivals to offer the option of BYO and a full-experience ticket including camping and parking, Meredith continues to mark itself as one of the most prime across the national festival roster. Meredith 2018 goes from Friday December 7 until Sunday December 9.

Locks in debut Australian Tour Americana gem Margo Price is set to tour Australia for the first time, coming after a stack of sold out headliners across the US and the UK. After 13 years on the scene, Price was scouted and signed by The White Stripes’ Jack White and quickly rose to become one of the most recognised and respected voices in her field. For her debut Australian appearance, Margo Price will begin at Caravan Music Club on Wednesday October 10, before heading to Thornbury Theatre on Friday October 12, and rounding out the tour by featuring at the Out On The Weekend festival as a headline act.

Is taking his Measurements EP around the country Singer-songwriter and certified heart-wrencher Didirri has locked in a national tour, celebrating his astounding debut EP, Measurements. It’s been a belter of a year for the young gun, who rose to acclaim last year with the release of his track ‘Jude’, before his EP spawned such beauties as ‘Formaldehyde’ and ‘I Can’t Get Last Night Out Of My Head’. He’s taken to massive stages including Splendour In The Grass, SXSW, The Great Escape, and BIGSOUND and played sold out shows across the country, and will now bring it all to The Corner Hotel on Saturday November 10.

A massive Soothsayer X I OH YOU day party is coming A roaring day party thrown by record labels Soothsayer and I OH YOU has been locked in for Melbourne to lap up, and it’s aptly titled City Loop. Back-dropped by the hallowed walls of RMIT’s CBD campus and the Old Melbourne Gaol forecourt, two stages will run at the event with music coming from certified party starters CC:DISCO!, Dance Party, and Cut Copy, as well as the likes of KLLO, Channel Tres, Miss Blanks, Francis Inferno Orchestra, and more. Off the back of hotly sought-after solo shows in both the US and Europe, Ladder will take on classics including ‘Cold Feet’, ‘Susan’, and ‘Come On Back This Way’ – with the promise to shed light on their background stories – for Australian audiences. Aptly titled his Jack Ladder Sings 20 Golden Greats tour, Ladder will do just that as he takes to The Grace Darling Hotel on Friday September 21.

Melbourne songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist Running Touch has revealed he’s got a new live show under his belt, and is poised to showcase it in his hometown this October. Coming in support of his stellar new single ‘My Hands’, the new set up will see Running Touch combine his skills as a guitarist, pianist, bassist, vocalist, and dancer on the stage, promising to create a mesmerising spectacle for the senses. Running Touch will take to 170 Russell on Friday October 12.
Since bursting out of the gate with her cool electronic banger ‘1950’ earlier this year, 19-year-old superstar King Princess has continued her sky-rocketing rise to acclaim in fine form. Drop new track, announce tour dates Melbourne alt-rock act Ceres have let loose a belter of a new track, ‘Viv In The Front Seat’ and have revealed that they’ll be taking it on tour. The four-piece crashed their way through the heavily saturated alt-rock scene with their 2016 album Drag It Down On You, though it would be until ‘Viv In The Front Seat’ before the band put anything out again. Lead singer Tom Lanyon accredits a heavy dose of writer’s block to the hiatus, but reveals that his “ears are unblocked” and ready to crack onto more new music. To celebrate the track, Ceres will hit Howler on Saturday October 20.

Set to offer up the party of the year Staple radio offering RnB Fridays is back for another live trip in 2018, promising to thrown down the party of the year with some of the biggest artists in the world in tow. While Down Under for his stint at Listen Out, rapidly rising experimental pop artist COL3TRANE has locked in a Melbourne sideshow. After collecting sizeable acclaim for his debut mixtape Tsarina in 2017, the Londoner has been hard at it producing his follow up BOOT which is set to drop on Friday August 17. The young gun, at only 19 years old, has recently finished touring with Dua Lipa and Vic Mensa and is now set to make his debut Australian appearance in September. COL3TRANE’s sideshow will go down at The Workers Club on Tuesday September 25.
Following their stellar first round lineup announcement featuring The Jungle Giants, Clare Bowditch, Kate Miller-Heidke, Tim Finn, and You Am I, The Lost Lands has kicked things up a notch. The 2018 stint will now also see guitar-driven pop songstress Jess Locke on the bill, as well as blues and soul troubadours The Teskey Brothers and cross-cultural fusion Amaru Tribe. Fitzroy staple Grumpy’s Green is turning four this month, and the venue is set to throw an almighty birthday bash to celebrate. Two stages will run across the event, with some of Melbourne’s finest acts from Bare Vibes, Dark Riddims, Detrimental Audio, Modern Hypnosis, One Puf, Positively Positive, System Unknown and more taking them on throughout the day. Helmed by Melbourne songwriter and pianist Ezra Lee, the Ezra Lee trio are set to play a hometown show this month. Lee boasts a decade-long career spanning multiple album release, shows across Australia, Europe and the US, a signing with German indie label Rhythm Bomb Records, and a slot opening for rockabilly legend Wanda Jackson with his trio and is now set to bring his rockabilly and blues prowess back home. Has revealed the recipients of the 2018 MIFF Short Awards From a heaving pool of 120 edible films comes the list of winners of the 2018 MIFF Short Awards, judged by a brains trust of the Australian film industry. Emerging Australian Filmmaker went to Astrid Dominguez Ortega for We Vanish and Best Fiction went to Bonobo (dir. Zoel Aeschbacher, Switzerland). Meanwhile Best Australian Short Film was awarded to director Charles Williams for his evocative piece tackling mental illness, All These Creatures, and Best Short Film was taken out by Canada’s Jeremy Comte with his powerful representation of masculinity in Fauve. Heavyweight musical comic Reggie Watts is returning Down Under for Sydney’s Just For Laughs in November, and has announced that he’ll be making a special stop to perform in Melbourne also. Watts is internationally renowned for his totally improvised sets that use voice and looping pedals to mesh the lines between music and comedy. Listed as one of Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Stand-Up Comics of all Time, Reggie Watts is not one you want to miss. Catch him at The Palais Theatre on Sunday November 25.
From homegrown theatre company Dirty Pennies Theatre Project, comes Sadie Hasler’s Pramkicker. Taking to Meat Market this month, the play surrounds Jude – who has never wanted kids – losing the plot and kicking a pram at a café full of ‘yummy mummies’. She’s arrested and sent to anger management therapy, beginning an utterly witty as well as touching sequence of events. ICONIC PUNK BAND REUNIONS: WHAT WORKED AND WHAT DIDN’T
With the touring circuit essentially the only way for bands to make any kind of a living these days, it seems that every week another long-broken up band announces a reformation and takes it to the road as a nostalgia cash cow. While some of these reunions have seen the bands returning rejuvenated and stronger than ever, others have tarnished once reputable legacies.
Misfits
MISFITS
One of the first reunions of an early iconic punk rock band, the reformation of the Misfits in 1995 was notable in that it didn’t include founding frontman and primary songwriter Glenn Danzig, who had his own successful career with his namesake solo band. Recruiting unknown lead vocalist Micheal Graves, the band returned with a passable enough sound but with a cartoonish image and heavy emphasis on merchandising their logo and name to almost KISS levels of excess. Though successful at the time, this era of the band is largely passed over in favour of the original Danzig-led lineup, which finally reunited for excellent shows in 2016. SLEATER-KINNEY
Now this was a reunion done right. After breaking up after their 2005 highpoint album The Woods, the band ended on a high and moved onto various side projects. While rumours came and went with little to base them off, the band released a surprise 7” single with a new track with the release of their 2014 box set anthology. A week later, they announced they wouldn’t only be returning, but would be releasing a new fulllength album before the tour. That came to form as 2015’s excellent No Cities To Love. Instantly back into the fold as a full time touring and recording band, there has been no reliance on nostalgia on past revival, with new tracks and new energy propelling the band forward into the future, sounding as fresh as ever. BLACK FLAG
In 2013, founding guitarist Greg Ginn announced that he was reforming the legendary hardcore band, with only himself and vocalist Ron Reyes (who was only in the band for one year) as returning members. At the same time, previous members Bill Stevenson, Chuck Dukowski, Dez Cadena, and Keith Morris formed their own band playing the band’s material called FLAG. With the whole situation devolving into a messy legal saga, Ginn’s Black Flag ended up playing lacklustre shows and releasing a lacklustre album in the form 2013’s What The? with the general fan consensus being that Ginn’s Black Flag in no way brought back the sound or the spirit of the original band, their competitors in FLAG were much more warmly received as a live band, wisely choosing to focus on performing early fan favourites and having no intention of producing recorded material. All in all, what could’ve been a successful reunion of one of the most iconic bands in punk rock fell completely flat. REFUSED
Breaking up almost immediately after releasing their masterpiece The Shape Of Punk To Come, Sweden’s Refused remained inactive until 2012 and vowed never to reform. But since these promises are known to be meaningless these days, the band reformed for a hugely successful reunion tour and eventual new album. While the album didn’t live up to the immense legacy of The Shape (and I don’t believe it was trying to), the live shows were absolutely phenomenal. The two shows they played at The Palace in Melbourne in 2012 were some of the best shows I’ve ever seen, with the band sounding as good as they ever have.
Willow
You may remember Willow Smith from her eclectic 2010 single, ‘Whip My Hair’. Those days are over for the now 17-year-old, however, as she has spent the past few years rebuilding her music career and recovering from the negative press that followed the then child star. ‘Whip My Hair’ became a hit around the world, reaching number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and 18 on the Australian ARIA charts. It was even acclaimed by artists like Solange Knowles, Ciara and Brandy. However, Smith felt her debut into the music industry became focused on fame, not talent. Years on, Smith has channelled this journey into a solid body of work under the name Willow, releasing avant-garde soul album ARDIPITHECUS in 2015, and her second album, The 1st, which uses more organic and raw sounds to channel alternative singer-songwriters of the ‘90s. Most recently, Willow has hit the road with American singer-songwriter Jhené Aiko, with rumours of a collaborative jazz album floating around online. When it comes to the music industry, Willow is taking all the right steps to become an individual musician, unique from her family name.

Plus, if you subscribe, you get a discount at a whole bunch of record stores around Melbourne. You’ve only got to buy a new record, like, every fortnight or something for that to end up paying for itself. Also, Triple R has just launched their new website, hallelujah.

Last week, a hip hop classic celebrated its 30th anniversary. I’m of course referring to N.W.A’s debut, Straight Outta Compton. Considered the pioneering record of gangsta rap, the 13-track record has had an enormous impact on the evolution and identity of hip hop, having been sampled by the likes of Fatboy Slim, Vince Staples, 2Pac, Black Eyed Peas and T-Pain. If you’ve listened to any track, you’ll recognise the recurring violent and sexual lyrics and profanity, often specifically directed at government organisations. This tension persisted over the years, resulting in the FBI and U.S. Secret Service sending a letter to N.W.A’s label, Ruthless Records, informing the group of their displeasure with their music, and banning them from performing at several venues. This letter only helped further popularise the album, solidifying the group’s work as a commentary on racism, police brutality, and corruption. In 1991, Straight Outta Compton sat at 51 on the Australian Aria Charts and soared to number eight on the same chart in 2015-16 upon release of the Straight Outta Compton film.
Despite the site being used as a festival location for eight years now, resident opposition to the inaugural Bears Gone Bush Festival has forced its cancellation. The much-loved organisers Animals Dancing expressed their polite frustration with the community via Facebook last Thursday. “We had absolutely no reason to doubt the feasibility of our site until an 11th hour petition was launched late last week. After lengthy mediation and talks between ourselves, the site owners, and those voicing concerns, an amicable resolution was still not able to be reached.” In the festival’s place they’ve announced three nights held at clubs around Melbourne, dubbing it Bears Gone Bush Week. Elena Colombi will hit the The Gasometer Hotel on Friday September 21 with Millú and Pjenné. Interstellar Funk, Powder, Tolouse Low Trax, Alienata and Nosedrip will play at XE54 the following night. Also on the Saturday, Pender Street Steppers, Hashman Deejay and Tornado Wallace will hit Francis28.

This week’s artist spotlight is one for the fans of Erykah Badu and Moses Sumney. Hailing from Perth, ZĀN is a desi singer, songwriter, electronic producer and video artist whose musical routes can be traced from an eclectic mix of over-saturated South Asian cinema, ‘90s R&B, and ambient electronic minimalism. Having spent his early years in Pakistan, Japan and now Australia, ZĀN’s new music reflects a sound from another country and culture – almost another world. The artist’s new EP, Gulnaz, navigates issues of intersectional identity, traumatic past and optimistic future, fused together by alt-R&B stylists and bouncing production. Each track is a thought-provoking and emotional journey. ZĀN is incredibly in touch with his inner workings and isn’t afraid to speak up about the issues going on around him, and across the world.

Anyone who’s familiar with Hexdebt would know that the Melbourne four-piece thrash hard. Heavy riffs, screaming vocals and raucous guitars permeate their Bitch Rising EP, emanating a punk rock sound and attitude.

But they haven’t always been rockers. “I started playing guitar when I was seven, so for nearly 15 years,” guitarist Aife Larkin says. “I have a classical background, I play classical guitar and I study classical guitar, but I grew up listening to punk. It’s always been a really big part of my life playing with other people and often not classical music, and then studying in classical.” Bassist Isobel D’Cruz Barnes, has a similar background, taking up flute at five years old (which she still plays), before switching to bass in her early teens. “My sister who’s quite a bit older than me was listening to all these cool bands, and I think I just realised how lonely it was just focusing on this competitive, solo-driven classical career and I was like ‘Wow, I actually really want to play music with other people.’ I took up bass guitar when I was 12 and was playing jazz for a long time,” Barnes says. Barnes and Larkin met in high school, both talented musicians with a penchant for punk and a burning desire to start a band. However, it wasn’t until they met vocalist and guitarist Agnes Whalan and drummer Lucy Fry that this dream finally came to fruition. “I met Aife at a gig. We were playing a show together and then Aife got really drunk and came up to me after the show and was like ‘Hey, I’m starting this thing with some people, would you be interested in drumming for us?’ And I was like ‘Yeah, sounds good,’” Fry laughs at the memory. Whalan laughs in agreement, adding “There was heaps of energy to start something together, to the point where the first time I met Lucy was when she walked into my house and I was like ‘Lucy do you want a cup of tea?’ And then we belted out a song really quickly because I think there was a lot of mutual, just like waiting for the right circumstance. And that was Hexdebt.” The group had long been playing music with other bands before finding each other. All of them had experiences as female musicians in male dominated groups that have made them even more appreciative and passionate for what they’ve now created. “I think there’s a stoicism to playing with men in bands that maybe they don’t even realise, but it’s brought by this expectation for everyone to not be able to articulate what’s going on, but ‘Just do it man, just feel it,’ and we’re very vocal about what’s going on and what we’re experiencing and what isn’t working,” Whalan says. “It was a political thing in a lot of ways. I’m still really, really, good friends with people I’ve played in bands with in the past, and that I do play in bands with still that are dudes, but the whole reason they do it is different to the reason that Hexdebt does it. It’s a really different thing, it’s

purposeful in a completely different way,” Larkin says. “You have to have experienced some of that hardship to totally understand it sometimes,” Barnes adds. “We probably couldn’t write the music we write if we weren’t all deeply friends.” This sense of support and safety is something the band strives for among themselves, but also aim to cultivate at the shows they play. Being queer women in the punk niche of Melbourne’s live music scene, the group have experienced first-hand the ways in which some groups are often marginalised. This happens either consciously or subconsciously, and they’re passionate about creating spaces that everyone can enjoy and feel comfortable in. “I think the one thing that we’re really endeavouring to do is recognise that there are standards in place that are commonplace that everyone accepts, that upset and affect a lot of people,” Whalan explains. “We’re like ‘Ok, we’ve got this stage, we can do more than just talk through music, we can put things in place to make sure that at the end of this night someone is going to come away inspired, feeling like there is something more about this community that they can participate in.’” “You can’t just have a diverse stage. You have to have diverse people backstage, diverse people organising the gig, diverse people behind the bar, because that’s what truly fosters a safe environment,” Barnes says. Hexdebt will be helping kick things off for Live N Local, playing alongside Kill the Darling, Psychobabel, Alice Skye, and Househats; an eclectic mix of artists across a range of genres. “What’s really important about this gig is that there’s a merging of genre and with that comes different audience groups, and I think by being able to liaison with people that listen to different sounds and have different ideas of what the night’s going to be like, you’re building community,” Whalan says. “Not saying there’s going to be hip hop influences in Hexdebt anytime soon,” she pauses as laughter erupts from the table, “But we’ve played with a lot of bands and solo acts from different genres and it’s really helped us understand what we should be looking out for.” As for new music, fans should keep an ear out for a single and accompanying video soon, although they’ll have to wait a little longer for an album. “We’re really big perfectionists, who love to nurture each other and get distracted,” Barnes says. “But there’ll be an album released in March.”

Hence, Live N Local is here to combine the two for a week-long celebration of music throughout the City of Port Phillip, providing you with a cocktail of Melbourne’s best up-and-comers, veteran musos and skill-based workshops to choose from. We’re a horror-psych fuzz outfit from Melbourne. The band is Liam, Cazzy, Leah, and Forgey. Nice to meet you. The Character. We’re kind of a concept band. The songs are written through “the character” who has a very bizarre and warped perception on the world and doesn’t live in our timeline. Psychobabel not Psychobabel. Say it however you like we don’t mind, but for the record we pronounce it “Babble”. Dear King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. We are 100% available to play Gizz Fest this year, so feel free to hit us up x luv u. We’re eight months old. Our very first show was January this year and it was supporting Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, which was crazy.
When did you first start making music? I started playing piano quite young and I started writing songs in about grade six. I still remember the first song I ever wrote, and I promise you it was so awful. It was that peak time where whimsical indie bands with cutesy lyrics were a big thing and I think the first line was “I wanna wear no shoes to a furniture store and tell the sales accountant that he won a free cat”. I hope I have improved. Where do you find inspiration? I spend a lot of time in my own head so ‘inspiration’ mostly comes from things that are happening to me at the time or things that happened a long time ago but I’m only just processing now. What can we expect from an Alice Skye live show? A lot of awkward small talk and far too much oversharing from me. But also I play with twins Sam and Kane King that I grew up with back in Horsham, so the live music is very different to how it was recorded – the songs have come a long way. How important is storytelling to your life and music? I love storytelling. Listening to stories being told about my parents and my family help me learn more about who I am. Same goes for when I’m writing. I never expected people to listen to the songs on my album, they were just stories I’d written for my own self reflection and now that I have to share them onstage I’m constantly learning more about myself.

People often get our name wrong. We’ve been called many things, including Househates, Housecats, and Houserats, which is so close to Mouse Rat made famous by Parks & Recreation. They’re all pretty great names, but Household has to be the winner. We’re all originally from pretty different places. Freddy is from Norway, Margy is from Queensland, and Joshua is from regional Victoria, but now we all conveniently live in different houses in the same Melbourne suburb. We sometimes refer to this as the South Collingwood Bermuda Triangle even though Margy is technically in North Collingwood. Margy’s favourite food is vegan food and free beer. Freddy’s favourite food is pizza, and on our last tour Freddy briefly won an eating competition of his favourite food, before quite impressively losing into a nearby garden bed. Joshua’s favourite food is coffee. All band members either own or live with cats. Margy’s cat Bowie is an inbetween fluff cat. She’s a shoulder cat who needs constant cuddles, and thinks she’s a dog. Josh owns two glorious British shorthair cats, Jonesy and Snapple, who are brother and sister. They talk lots and enjoy the inside life. Freddy doesn’t own a cat, but lives with a black one called Onyx. Onyx spies on people from the staircase. Joshua likes to make videos and put them on Reddit – one, called ‘Blimpy Boy’ went viral. It can be found on YouTube and it also features Freddy. It’s pretty dumb, so we highly recommend it.
Dave would most likely become part of Heaven’s Gate because living for eternity in a comet’s tail would be pretty neat. They’re also the most fashionable cult; sporting shapeless black shirts with mandarin collars and Nikes. Alice would be in the Manson Family because she has a penchant for men with long hair and eyes that see into your soul. Plus, she’s always looking for subliminal messages in music that tell her to run away to a ranch on the outskirts of San Francisco. Jono reckons he would be sucked into Aum Supreme Truth. They made a nerve gas that was produced and tested in Western Australia, which was eventually used in an attack on a Tokyo subway in 1995. He didn’t actually give a reason as to why he’d be sucked into this cult. It sounds pretty evil but Jono loves everything about Japan so we guess he’d do anything for a free flight over there. Tasha felt weird glorifying cults (even though she made everyone else do it – she thinks she’s the Messiah) and only wanted to talk about her favourite mystery the Dyatlov Pass incident. This mystery is the best because it involves aliens, the yeti, an avalanche, radiation and the KGB all in one. Collectively, we’re most likely to have been part of The Family because we are all weird blonde children (except Alice but she’s an alien). We will neither confirm nor deny whether Anne Hamilton-Byrne has ever attended one of our gigs.

Footscray City Films Footscray City Films project their heart and soul into producing the finest filmmaking courses for their students. They embrace the hands-on approach of cinematography, editing, directing, producing, and undertaking make-up design for screen and film art direction. They have plenty of exciting projects up their sleeve, which includes their open day, their Global Film Project that incorporates a Los Angeles study trip for students, and their new feature film – a large-scale, collaborative project that they’re eager to release next year. “It’s been a collaborative process – the students and myself have been working towards writing, directing, and producing a feature film that will actually be released,” explains Timothy Spanos, the Head of Film and Television at FCF. That’s really exciting, the one we’ve planned for this year is sort of like a cult film, and we’ve hired some very notable Australian actors to work with the students and myself on that for release next year.” Footscray City Films also proudly endorses the creation of short films, since they’re a great learning experience for students and provides them with practical experience into filming their own narratives. “You actually have to put so much into a short film straight away. You’ve got to know the characters within the first ten seconds,” Spanos says. “You haven’t got a lot of time to tell the story and explore things, so it’s good training if you want to go on to something that’s going to be a feature-length production. I always encourage students to make as many as possible. “Students can walk away with short films and
“Art is a reflection of life and reflective of the society we live in.” hopefully put them into film festivals, because short films actually have a longer life than a feature film. A feature film plays at the cinemas for a couple of weeks then it’s on VAD and DVD within six months, whereas a short film can go on at a film festival for two years.” The students at Footscray City Films are wellknown for being a hard-working crew who instill their passion into their filming, and as a result, they’ll be travelling to Los Angeles as part of the Global Film Project. “There’s about 20-25 students going from the age band of 18 to 67,” Spanos says. “We’ve got four documentaries and a couple of narratives that are actually going to be made over there within the seven weeks we’re staying. “We’re working with the New York Film School, which is in Los Angeles. We’ll be attending a bunch of film industry events as well as making the short films. We’re talking about where we are going next year too, so it’ll be an annual thing.” Since the relationships formed on set are special and last for years, students are given the opportunity to build amazing networks. “We have ex-students who are still working together when they met here 20 years ago, there’s a great network of students who are always up for
helping each other and working on each other’s projects. We teach to collaborate in the creative process, and that’s the good thing about going to FCF, we’re very hands-on and it’s all about getting product out there. “It’s all about being an artist and actually telling a story, captivating and engaging an audience and establishing that work and getting your work out there. Art is a reflection of life and reflective of the society we live in.” Encapsulating Australian stories through filmmaking is very important to Spanos, who believes that more people need to actually go and see Australian films since they have plenty to showcase. “Australian films have a lot of heart and soul, and there are so many people making so many different types of films. “Australia’s isolation from the rest of the world is making it become more creative, I think because we’re so open but we don’t get an influx. We’re not begging for English and American influences anymore, we’ve got our own.”

Pramkicker Is it selfish for a woman to choose never to have children? This is the question being wrestled with onstage in Pramkicker, a short comedy put on by Dirty Pennies Theatre Project. Pramkicker follows Jude, a woman of a certain age who has long known she definitely doesn’t want to have a child. After Jude loses her cool in a café full of “yummy mummies” and kicks a pram, she’s sent off to anger management. “It really packs a punch,” says actress Anna Burgess, in the role of the titular Pramkicker. “It’s such a beautiful comedy, but it really is so tender as well.” Burgess says she was drawn to the role of Jude as a fully-realised and self-possessed female character. Jude knows where she stands, even as she grows increasingly convinced that other people don’t value her as much as they would if she had children. “She’s a woman who knows who she is,” says Burgess. “That’s what’s so refreshing: playing the role of a woman who’s in full flight. There’s some stuff percolating underneath, but she’s a woman who expresses herself. She has no fear of that, which is glorious. “Just because a woman chooses not to have children, she’s often branded: you must hate children, you’re heartless, or you’re selfish, but it’s often not the case. It’s really lovely to unpack that gently, although, obviously, my character’s not gentle.” Jude is joined by her younger sister Susie, played by Amy May Nunn. The eight-year age gap separating Jude and Susie seems smaller as the two mature and

Burgess, who is herself a younger sister, identifies with Susie’s feeling of being “left behind.” “An eight-year gap is huge when you’re a kid, but, when you get older, it starts to narrow and you find each other,” Burgess says. “There’s that thing with older sisters: the younger one always puts them on a pedestal, like they can do no wrong. For Susie, it’s that discovery: Judy’s just a person, just a beautifully flawed human being.” ‘A woman’s right to choose’ is a phrase usually invoked during debates on abortion rights, but Pramkicker asks a broader question about the status of women who choose to remain permanently childless. “There’s a sadness to both, and there’s a positive to both,” says Burgess. “It is my right to choose that I don’t want to have children, but there will always be a tiny little question: did I make the right choice? It’s a very tender topic. Jude’s known for a long time that it’s not been in her body – she’s never yearned for that. But there’s not a bitterness about it.” Pramkicker will make its Australian debut at the Melbourne Meat Market’s Stables, following a 2015 run at Edinburgh Fringe where it drew praise from
the Fringe Review and GQ Director Poppy Rowley – whose credits include That’s A Fact That’s Not Fun and Buried Women – is giving us Pramkicker as a breathless one-hour show free of scene breaks. Dirty Pennies have been rehearsing in spaces across Melbourne for three days a week, which gives everyone some time to reflect between sessions. The theatre script, authored by Sadie Hasler, reflects a kind of cheeky British humour that will be broadly familiar to fans of BBC comedy. Burgess doesn’t know quite how Pramkicker will go over with Melbourne audiences, but hopes the play will resonate with everyone. “It’s important, too, that it’s not a play against men,” says Burgess. “But it’s about the women, and the female voice. It’s for mothers as well, to have a laugh and let go of the stresses that a woman is under. “I think we all get so caught up in, ‘Am I doing it right?’ whatever it is. Are any of us doing it correctly? Who knows? All we’re doing is our best, and we’re having a laugh about that, which is refreshing and liberating.”

Prince and Sign o’ the Times Prince’s rare concert film Sign o’ the Times – released to support the Grammy-nominated album of the same name – is an extraordinary document of his true musical mastery. Shot in June 1987 while on tour in the Netherlands and Belgium and at his own Paisley Park Studios in Minneapolis, the setlist includes some of Prince’s biggest hits. Ahead of its special screening for Melbourne International Film Festival – which also features a Prince dance party hosted by Triple R’s Fee B-Squared – we asked Fee B to sort through Prince’s extensive back catalogue and pick out some of his most important recordings. “Anyone who knows me knows I hate choosing favourites so let me be clear, these are the Prince tracks I love because of the stories attached to them, not my top tracks of all time.” ‘Controversy’. This is the first Prince record I ever owned and I paid for it with my own pocket money at a hardware store in Thomastown that just so happened to have a rack of 45s. Kooky. It was 1981 and I was too
young to appreciate the lyrics then, but I do now and it’s kind of sad how relevant they remain. “I just can’t believe all the things people say (controversy)/ Am I black or white? Am I straight or gay? (controversy) / Do I believe in god? Do I believe in me? (controversy”) Always fun when DJs are still dropping this track with punters chanting: “People call me rude, I wish we were all nude / I wish there was no black and white, I wish there were no rules.” ‘When You Were Mine’. This was the B-side to ‘Controversy’ and I have definitely thrashed this one more. It turns up in a lot of my playlists and still sounds fresh AF to me – maybe because it doesn’t sound super slick. When I grabbed a copy of Cyndi Lauper’s She’s So Unusual album in 1983, I was pretty psyched to see she’d covered it. ‘1999’. I’ve danced to this so many times. The opening drags me back to the ‘80s every time. We’d always drop it on New Year’s Eve and it always felt like 1999 was further away than hoverboards. You were never sure you were going to make it there. “I don’t wanna die, I wanna dance my life away” was pretty much my mantra. ‘When Doves Cry’. This song was massive. The
film clip was everywhere and it was the lead track from the Purple Rain soundtrack. I went and saw the film with my bestie at a cinema in Greensborough. Look, it wasn’t a great film, but that soundtrack is pretty bonkers. ‘Darling Nikki’. Although there were plenty of tracks alluding to masturbation, this was the first one I could remember that actually used the word, and why not? To be honest, I was a little concerned about Nikki having paper cuts thanks to that magazine though. ‘Raspberry Beret’. My best friend moved to the Gold Coast and I hated it. We’d write letters to each other most weeks because phone calls were pretty exy back then. He would send his top ten’s because we were music obsessives and I remember when he told me this song reminded him of me. Makes no sense really, I’ve never owned a raspberry beret, and he thinks I’m quite bright thank you. I still know how to do the dance from the clip and I still have all of those letters and they’re hilarious. ‘Cream’. Allen Stone is fresh out of the hot tub and his evening couldn’t get any better. Lounging on his porch overlooking Spokane, it’s been a hot day and the countryside i s lush and green. Though he’s eight-and-a-half thousand miles away, it’s easy to tell from Stone’s voice that he’s like a sunflower – carefree and radiant with a whole lot of love to give to the world. “It’s absurd, how privileged the world we live in today is,” Stone says. “After I’m through chatting to you, I’m going to push buttons on which type of food I want, and it’s going to be delivered straight to my door.” 2018 has been a big year for Stone, having already dropped two tracks, ‘Brown Eyed Lover’ and ‘Warriors’, which forms the first taste of the new album he’ll be releasing in early 2019. After writing ‘Warriors’, Stone got the opportunity to play it at the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics, which celebrated 50 years in 2018. “They wanted to know if we had any material that we wanted to play and I said to them, ‘I’ve got the perfect song.’ Slowly but surely we were able to add more and more elements to our performance. They were like, ‘Hey, what do you think about having a choir?’ and they came back and said ‘What about a 2000-piece choir?’ I thought ‘Even better, this is great.’ “Then, they came back and said ‘What if we used the Seattle Seahawks drum line?’ They kept

adding all these incredible pieces to the performance and it couldn’t have been more perfect. I came away from that event on fire. I’ve never felt better playing music in my life,” Stone says. Music has always been a big part of Stone’s life, and from listening to his music you can tell that soul greats such as Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder have had a big impact on shaping his honey-like vocal delivery. Beginning to collect classic records in his teenage years, it was the 1973 album Innervisions by Stevie Wonder that was a turning point for Stone. “You’d have to have little to no heartbeat for that record not to hit you somehow. At the age I was when that record came along, I was graduating high school and there are so many incredible songs on that record. Stevie played most of the instruments and I don’t know exactly how old Stevie was when he recorded it, but I think we were around the same age. That record and Songs in the Key of Life, were two hugely influential albums for me.” Stone is getting married in September and to coincide, he’s hitting the road. As you’d think, Stone is very excited to get back Down Under – not once, but twice – when he returns to play Bluesfest 2019.
“I’ve never seen Ray LaMontagne and he’s one of my favourite singers ever, so I’d say he’s at the top of the list of people I need to see. “Whenever there’s an offer from Bluesfest, I always take it. There are incredible festivals all over the world and yes their lineups kill, but Bluesfest is always set apart for the calibre of musicians who actually play real live music,” Stone says. Asking what German techno group Scooter are singing about is a bit like asking what Jackson Pollock was painting pictures of. Trying to rationalise the band’s absurdist lyrics will only lead to frustration. Like religious mystics, Scooter fans know to crack their glowsticks and let the music carry them along, without getting hung up on literalist readings of the text. “Some music is like noise: you don’t notice,” says frontman H.P. Baxxter. “Sometimes, you feel it somehow. With trance and techno music, there’s something I really feel. It’s not only entertainment.” “I want you back, so clean up the dish / By the way, how much is the fish?” asks Baxxter in ‘How Much Is the Fish?’, a song that, for one reason or another, became an anthem for the beads-and-blacklights set in the ‘90s. When Jimmy Fallon added the song to his “do not play” list, ranting – and raving – over its perplexing lyrics, Baxxter took to Youtube helpfully to inform Fallon that the fish had cost around 3.80 Deutsche Marks. “There isn’t a single Scooter song where the lyrics make any kind of sense,” writes one YouTuber in response to Fallon. “But techno fans don’t really give a crap, he has sick beats and drops.” You may as well complain about the surreal loopiness of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, a show from which Baxxter draws influence. Like Monty Python’s chicken-wielding knight, Scooter’s music can’t be enjoyed and rationalised at the same time. The 2017 album, Scooter Forever includes a hardstyle cover of ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’ from Monty Python’s Life of Brian. “I like the melody: it’s funny and it’s positive, and
it’s a good remembrance of my youth,” Baxxter says. “When I was 18, I saw all the movies. This kind of humour always brings tears to my eyes from laughing.” Baxxter refutes the story that he studied accountancy in Munich during his youth, but dropped out after one day. True to form, he seems to find the misinformation, currently stated as fact, on his Wikipedia page more amusing than bothersome. “‘One day,’” Baxxter exclaims. “I was studying law for one year in Hanover. This is a rumour that sometimes goes, but it’s funny.” Five hundred weeks on the singles charts, 80 gold and platinum records, and 30 million albums sold: summed up in numbers, Scooter are among the most prolific German musicians since Wagner. The band are currently gearing up for a pan-Australian tour, their first trip Down Under since 2007. “It’s the first time we’ve really performed live in Australia,” Baxxter says. “Last time, it was more like a DJ set. Because of the circumstances we couldn’t bring it all over, but this time we managed to come over with our technicians and all the stuff we need. How can I describe it? It should be wild and wicked.” Baxxter is looking forward to visiting Australia’s zoos and seeing the Sydney skyline once more,
and hopes to visit the South Australian town of Hahndorf, recognised for its German cuisine and rustic, Bavarian-style post-and-beam architecture. “We really enjoyed the trip in those days, and I’m happy that it’s going to happen again now,” Baxxter says. “Everything was so different when you’re used to how it is in Europe – like when you have a flight for a couple of hours, but you are still in the same country.” Scooter’s current tour will combine ‘90s and millennial hits like ‘How Much Is the Fish?’, ‘Hyper Hyper’, and ‘Nessaja’ with recent material from Scooter Forever. Scooter Forever, which combines new hardstyle tracks with reinterpretations of rave classics, was the product of extensive trial-and-error, Baxxter says. “While producing, we try out many different sounds and hook lines,” he continues. “You try to fit it together and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. You get a feeling if something sounds cool or not. But, sometimes, in the end, when you finish a tune and you sleep one more night, the next day you think, ‘No, I don’t like it.’ Then, everything is erased, and you start anew.” BY ZACHARY SNOWDON SMITH
Redro Redriguez & His Inner Demons With a sweeping hood of unkempt red hair, a wicked sense of humour, and a lifetime spent on the road and behind the mixing desk for some of the world’s heaviest bands, Redro Redriguez isn’t the first person you’d think of if someone asked you to describe a perfectionist. However, when asked why it has taken a little over two years for his band Redro Redriguez & His Inner Demons to follow-up the stoner rock-infused Easy Magic EP, Redriguez shoots straight. “Denim Daddy was recorded at the end of November over three days at a place called Debasement in Ferntree Gully, where Bugdust recorded their album and Uptown Ace did their albums,” he says. “At the end of 2016 it was decided that I would do an album with Danny [Leo, drums] and Neil [Wilkinson, guitar] and then we steadily worked on the songs because they were doing Fluff as well, so I had to work in with that which added time.”

“I think that bands that think that it will come together in the studio are very naïve because it is actually a bad creative situation.” As Redriguez contests, finding a sense of perfection takes time. “It took the best part of a year to work the band into a shape that we were all happy with.” After almost 30 years recording music, Redriguez – along with his band that are all similarly experienced – know that the illustrious ‘studio magic’ is a fantasy, instead it is all about preparation. “We recorded it in three days because we had all the songs ready to go. I think that bands that think that it will come together in the studio are very naïve because it is actually a bad creative situation.” On the topic of avoidable dysfunction, the second last song on Denim Daddy, titled ‘Third Quarter’, comes to Redriguez’s mind. “I read this NASA study about how in isolated situations, like being stuck up in an International Space Station, it is the third quarter where the insanity sets in because you are past the halfway mark but still a long way off a normal living situation,” he says. The empathy or relevance for Redriguez that inspired him to write a song about it is that of a band being on tour. While having not toured widely with his band, it was Redriguez’s broad experience
as a roadie where he got the most insight into this cabin-fever like phenomena. “I was a roadie for this band called Killing Time and in 1992 they got to support Jane’s Addiction. They ummed and ahhed about taking me right up until the night before the tour started and then they asked me to come. I went right around Australia in pretty much the same set of clothes,” Redriguez says. “I was 18 so I just went for it, at the time Jane’s Addiction were at their peak having just released Ritual de Lo Habitual. By the third quarter of it exhaustion kicked in and I got a bit emotional – lack of sleep combined with 14-hour days meant that the loading in every day basically sent me insane.”

Living Music After the success of their Greensborough store, which has been operating since 2015, Living Music are now expanding into Carlton. Offering the same services as the Greensborough store – or Greensy as their Manager Tim Williams refers to it – the Carlton store will be selling the usual brands of guitars, pianos and equipment as well as expanding their established music school. The Living Music team are super excited about the new store opening. After the success of the flagship store, Living Music has always wanted to expand and create the same community in other areas where they see the need for it, and even have plans for more expansion in the future. “Even from just being there the last couple of weeks setting up, the response has been awesome,” Williams says. “We’ve been selling heaps of stuff and really we’ve been closed, so it’s just from people knocking on the door and asking to come in for a quick look. It’s been really good.” Living Music also offer different brands of instruments, instead of just the big names such as Fender and Gibson, they sell guitar brands that are of the same of better quality. Williams says that Living Music does really well because they offer an alternative. “We’re big supporters of Cole Clark guitars, which are made here in Melbourne,” he says. Williams says that their biggest goal as a music store is to build up their music school, as they believe that music is important for people in general. They want to encourage people to pursue music and they can help people build up their confidence to learn to play in a friendly environment.

“From what we gather, there are a lot of people in the Carlton area that want to learn music, but they just haven’t really had anywhere to do it,” Williams says. “We’re very family-orientated and easy going. We really appeal to the people that want to learn but are a bit too scared and unfamiliar, so we really help those people out. Most of us are from the country and we’re a bit more approachable and understanding and patient with people. We take the time out to get to know people and their needs, rather than just push something on them.” Located in what some might say is a “grungy” area, Living Music offers a different shopping experience with modern facilities in a very clean and organised environment. They strive for customer satisfaction by firstly finding out why the customer is there and how to fulfil their needs, and then using their own knowledge and experience of being in bands to help. “We offer a more contemporary shopping experience for people, with helpful staff that you can actually ask questions that you don’t know the answers to, and they’ll give you an honest answer. And they won’t make you feel stupid for asking that
question,” he says. “We genuinely really try and help people and we won’t stop until they are satisfied.” Williams says the best thing about working at Living Music is solving problems and overcoming challenges. He says there is lots of problem solving when it comes to helping musicians, as music evolves very quickly and technology is advancing rapidly, so as a music store, they need to keep up to date with the latest equipment. “You really have to know so much stuff – there are so many different facets of the musical industry,” he says. “It’s a good, fun environment too. It’s pretty rewarding as well, knowing that you’ve taught some kids or helped someone out in the shop and then you go to The Corner Hotel and they’re playing that night, it’s really cool to see.”

Andrew W.K. In 2012, American power rocker Andrew W.K. was an international headliner at Groovin The Moo. Despite it being almost 12 years since he released his globally-celebrated debut party rock record I Get Wet – which featured anthems like ‘Party Hard’ and ‘Party til You Puke’ – Andrew W.K. was still a widely acclaimed touring musician so, ostensibly, the billing made sense. Unfortunately, punters at the rural music festival didn’t enjoy the hard rocking Californian’s pianodriven rock opera, instead pelting him with bottles and shoes from Bendigo to Townsville. Andrew W.K. – or Andrew Fetterly WilkesKrier as he is known off stage – didn’t let that stop his performance though. “It’s a pretty straight-forward showbiz tradition that the show must go on,” he says. “There have been tons of shows like that and, to be honest, looking back on those sorts of shows, it’s amazing to me that it hasn’t happened more often.” For the uninitiated, trying to imagine what would be so polarizing about a 6ft 2” man with long black hair playing thundering rock’n’roll on piano, one could speculate that it’s the total lack of pretension and raw emotion that Wilkes-Krier plays with that audiences found so loathsome. It is as though, before each set, he rips out his heart and hands it to the audience to mind while he shreds. There is an unspoken contract that Wilkes-Krier enters with every single punter at each of his shows. “The goal is to create a feeling in that room that reaches deep inside all of us and stays there, so once you have left room and returned to your life outside the venue that ‘party power’ will ring not just in your ears, but in your soul as well.” When Wilkes-Krier first toured Australia in

“The goal is to create a feeling in that room that reaches deep inside all of us and stays there.” 2001, a small yet passionate crowd caught his show at Max Watt’s (then called The Hi-Fi Bar). Not to let the smallish turnout detract from the party, he invited the entire audience onstage and encouraged a young man to stage dive – miraculously the handful of people remaining on the floor boosted the diver, causing the essentially stateless crowd surfer to land on their feet. “I have always believed that there seems to be a party guardian angel in so many of these situations that looks out for the hard-partyers of the world. At all my shows, those that choose to give themselves wholeheartedly over to the party are protected by a presence that helps ensure safety and maintain kindness so it can be a very joyful yet violent experience,” WilkesKrier says. This unbridled physical expression he is describing has always been a cornerstone of Andrew W.K.’s music, with the front cover of his debut record featuring Wilkes-Krier with a heavily broken and bloodied nose. This passion found in his music and live performance still spills over, even when he is simply discussing it. “When I let myself go to the music I am liberated from that need to control my physical
self. Instead I’m lost to my own spirit that is being nourished by the benevolent spirit of partying.” The juxtaposition of Wilkes-Krier preaching at the alter of ‘party’ and the baffled tone in which he sought to reconcile his reception last time he was in Australia is profound. Similarly, as Wilkes-Krier describes the six-piece band he is bringing for this tour there is fortitude to his tone, as though he is tacitly committing that this tour will deliver. “Lately, we’ve been touring more shows than we ever have before. Rather than tire us, the increased performances have led to the band having more moments where we collectively achieve a transcendental state – where we are one with the music and ourselves. It’s a type of fulfillment that I’ve never really experienced before in life,” Wilkes-Krier says. For Wilkes-Krier, this current incarnation of Andrew W.K. is the best yet. “I can now say that when I see a photo of the band up on stage, that this looks the way I dreamed and hoped it would look back in 1998 when I established it.” BY DAN WATT

When did you first start making music? I first started making music in grade 10 after my Mum bought me my first guitar. Tell us about ‘I Lost My Way’. In 2016, my son Guthrie was born. It was the most incredible time of my life. Having a beautiful new little person in our life was, I now realise, a bigger change than imagined. I spent the first four months living exactly the same as I had before. I became physically and emotionally exhausted. In the lead up to Christmas I had an incident at a gig where I started spinning uncontrollably, dizzy and unable to stand up. It resulted in a trip to the hospital in an ambulance. After that I experienced bouts of extreme anxiety and sometimes cases of not being able to breathe properly. During Christmas in the safety of my family I hit the wall. I felt unable (emotionally and physically) to cope with the smallest, everyday tasks. Insomnia and anxiety were at their peak and I really didn’t know what to do. Unlike most, I hadn’t experienced any form of mental health problems before and wasn’t equipped with any coping mechanisms. Within the safe, loving hands of family and friends I was able to move through it. In some ways I’m grateful for the experience. It gave me a new understanding of myself and others. I now hope to approach other people’s problems with actual empathy. What do you love about making music? Collaborating is the thing I enjoy most.
What led you to making music? It was never a decision to make music, I’ve forever been creating. However, the decision to write this album was driven by my excitement to travel and to be inspired by the music coming out of one of the most exciting artistic hubs in the world, New York. Tell us about your new album Breathe. Breathe was written and recorded in New York. It celebrates the rich and vibrant music culture of NYC, elevating with exciting grooves, and harmony inspired by gospel and jazz music. I’ve explored themes of anxiety and love and also paid tribute to Michael Jackson with an exciting arrangement of ‘You Rock My World’. What do you love about making music? The way it is so purely created – from a thought in my head, to a harmonic and rhythmic body of music. How would you describe your sound? With a background in jazz this certainly creeps into my compositions, from elements of improvisation to the harmony that moves under my melodies. Growing up with Destiny’s Child and Christina Aguilera there’s no denying the influence of ‘90s R&B and later exposure to gospel and soul artists. What can we expect from your launch show? It’ll be a night of grooves, with R&B group Lfalfa kicking it off followed by the soulful voice of Fulton Street’s Shannen Wick with Son of a Gunzel and followed by my eight-piece band filling the room with sounds to move and groove too.

What led you to making music? We all have quite different musical backgrounds; many of the members played in high school bands together, while others started playing through drunken jams and freestyle poetry sessions. The band originally formed in Bathurst before moving to Melbourne in 2016. Tell us about your new track ‘Confetti Dreams’. Confetti Dreams was the first song that really defined the sound we were trying to make. The lyrics talk of failed aspirations, insecurities, and the vanity and narcissism that come with that. What do you love about making music? We all use music very differently to one another. For some, it’s about thinking deeply about the intricacies of a song’s composition and how all the elements need to work together to create the overall sound. For others, it’s about the freedom of release and that feeling of pure expression you get with music. How would you describe your sound? Our music is groove-focused psychedelic rock. We were initially inspired by contemporary psych bands like Dungen, Boogarins, and King Gizz, although we also listen to a lot of variations on jazz, funk, and disco. What can we expect from Sofalarama at The Tote? The idea of the show was to create a lineup of artists who’ve inspired us and help carry us on our journey as a band. Eilish Gilligan. I love everything Eilish does, from her earlier tunes (especially ‘Here’) to her incredible 2018 singles ‘S.M.F.Y’ and ‘Patterns’. She’s killing the game. Feeling pretty lucky to be supporting her at her single launch in September. Alice Skye. Alice’s incredible storytelling is infectious. I had her song ‘Friends With Feelings’ on repeat for days when I first heard it, and still go back to it regularly. I love the line, ‘I don’t quite know which colours make up my heart’. Zoe A’dore. Zoe’s debut track ‘Bury It’ came out in March and is close to racking up a million Spotify streams. I’m a huge fan of this tune and am super excited to see what Zoe releases next. Big things ahead for this gal. Sannia. Sannia has an absolutely killer voice and her debut track ‘Go and Get Over’ has been in my head for weeks. The hook is wild and there’s a pretty insane note in the chorus that she reaches so effortlessly. It was even more impressive when I caught her live a couple of weeks back at the Wesley Anne. Eliott. I’ve known Charlotte for a few years and absolutely love what she’s doing with this project. Her voice is truly spectacular and needs to be heard live, because it’s huge and full of raw emotion. ‘Over and Over’ is so impeccably crafted and every time I hear her sing ‘those mountains’ I get shivers all over.

You could fairly wonder whether guitar-driven indie-rock has all but passed its use-by date. But on the debut Not A Boys Name single, Sydney’s Dave Jenkins Jr. reminds us that good songwriting has a way of shining through, no matter the chosen tools. The crisp and detailed production accentuates Jenkins’ melodic fluency while still leaving space for decorative guitar, xylophone, and harmony vocals. Like the best work of Spoon or latter-day Roxy Music, the true heft of ‘Hazard Perception Test’ creeps up on you. Before you know it, you’re tingling with the unique feeling of contentedness that good pop songs provide.

To Be a Bird (One Little Indian Records) The latest from London outré-indie trio Peluché rattles off a list of prescribed measures for attaining physical and psychic perfection. Through spoken verses founded in a lithe Afrobeat groove, Peluché bring attention to various prevailing insecurities – whether it’s making the right financial choices, taking the necessary supplements, or eliminating pernicious dietary components. The relentless lead bass playing underlines the bombardment, while a frenzied clarinet solo steps in to convey what words can’t. Oh, to be a bird.

Oxytocin (Hysterical Records) Despite the unnecessary capitalisation in their band name, Melbourne’s HoT To RoT aren’t the least bit naff. ‘Oxytocin’ recalls a time when the term post-hardcore meant something other than shitty emo trash. Here it applies to the channelling of aggression through peculiar polyrhythms and the melding of pristine melodicism with genuine sonic force.

It’s good to know we can still count on Jake Shears to deliver an absurdly titled song that is indeed big, dumb, and fucking fun. Injecting sweaty blues-funk into his extroverted pop signature, Shears at once extols and pillories the identity defining characteristics of a big bushy moustache. It’s instantly catchy and perhaps not as stupid as it first seems. Or every bit as stupid; we could care less either way.

A Better Life Spring King’s A Better Life is teeming with attitude and spunk, strutting its way through 14 straight-to-thepoint numbers with absolute assurance.
Pace and intensity are maintained for the majority, though there are clever sequences in this record that keep it from becoming repetitive, marking it as a consistent earworm. A short 25 second intro in ‘Static’ offers one of the few opportunities for a breather in this rapid-fire album – a quick, sexy sax riff gently priming the ears before lead single ‘Animal’ takes over and begins to pull the listener along, whether they’re ready or not. “What are you waiting for?” it screams and charges – ride cymbal and melting guitars blazing alongside. At first this track feels like a bombardment of sorts, but a second listen assures you that Spring King are clever and calculated in their work. There are plenty of moving parts, but everything has a place. Each track within A Better Life barley notches the four-minute mark, further instilling the idea that this band has got something to say, and they want to say it quickly. In the middle comes a barrage of urgent, attitude-fuelled cuts including ‘Let’s Drink’, ‘Paranoid’, and ‘The Hum’ before a short, choir-filled interlude allows for a quick moment of respite. ‘Us Vs Them’ follows and features a deliciously simple guitar lick leading into the chanting chorus – it softens the blow and allows for some movement amongst all the noise – before a cut into a cool, quick double-time chant cements this track as an anthemic standout. ‘Echo Chamber’ – and in particular its guitar solo/bridge sequence – really struts, while ‘Thick Skin’ dances along with more of a playful tone and rocks out in fine form. Closer ‘Thunder’ takes things out in serious fashion, rhythmic bass underpinning the telling of a relationship running its course. “Thunder why’d you have to come and take me away now?” it bounces and chants along, slowly melting the album away and epitomising its moody, tense – almost agitated – feeling. Black Wash
Felix Weatherall, the mastermind behind Ross From Friends, continues his surreal exploration through lo-fi house and trance on his debut full-length Family Portrait. Weatherall started small. Like most internet-age DIY beat producers, the artist created simplistic beats that hissed and scratched under the neon glow of ‘80s nostalgia wrapped in a vaporwave shall. Family Portrait tries not to blend in so easily. After haunting opener ‘Happy Birthday Nick’, Ross From Friends kicks things off with ‘Thank God I’m A Lizard’. A headless voice repeats the song’s title while a hypnotic trance beat takes the listener through Weatherall’s vibrant world. ‘The Knife’ slides into golden age hip hop beats and R&B. The title track is very, very influenced by Flying Lotus. The skitting beats alongside ancient Eastern bells give it away. Ross From Friends changes and shifts through different genres of electronic music that his album ends up sounding uneven. The producer is still finding his path and Family Portrait is a step in the right direction. It really is the beginning for Ross From Friends and if he continues to break away from his contemporaries, he’ll stand out from the rest.
California five-piece The Internet has quickly become a standard for modern soul and funk. Latest album Hive Mind is no exception, and is another classic chiller for you to play as a soundtrack to anything you’re doing that you want to feel 300% cooler about. ‘Roll (Burbank Funk)’ is a fantastic example of everything The Internet do best. With a catchy bass hook, some smooth synth, and a rhythm you can’t help but move with, the band put forward their case for being responsible for releasing the most infectious music we’ve seen in a long while. The album carries on with tracks like ‘Come Over’ and ‘Bravo’, and if by this point you haven’t at least started wiggling your hips then you might have an issue. The bass work by Patrick Paige II is second to none, and it’s worth listening to the album at least once through with just a focus on the magic of The Internet’s use of the bass clef in general. A great album to listen to, dance to, or have in the background to make everything seem funkier, Hive Mind is another album of the highest quality, and hopefully The Internet have plenty more to come.
Pagan, Melbourne’s fastest growing underground cult, have come out full guns blazing and aiming straight for the throat on their debut full-length Black Wash. If you’re a bit unsure about the idea of taking in some “blackened rock ‘n’ roll”, the uninitiated need look no further than lead single ‘Death Before Disco’; any band willing to swing so effortlessly between black metal blast beats and four-to-the-floor disco feels without sacrificing an inch of the savagery is a band after my own heart. From there, it gets darker and weirder, offering up AC/ DC grooves and hardcore howls before closing off with the amazing ‘Il Malocchio Si Chiude’. Who doesn’t love a good book-ending? Hard rock enthusiasts might find some of the harsher elements a bit challenging, and all those grim, kvlt Black Metal kids might straight up hate it (don’t worry, they’re incapable of love), but for the rest of us, Black Wash is a thick, dark, dank, and downright necessary breath of fresh air for these crusty old blackened lungs. If you’re not that into “the metal” but you like yourself a bit of grit, make a point to hear this. For the rest of us, mass is in session – I’ll meet you at the confessional.

Uniform Distortion is a raw album; it feels like a direct line to the psyche of a troubled man. However that doesn’t necessarily work to its favour. There are parts that are uncomfortable to hear, with chaotic elements that clash ever so violently. Throughout the album James exercises melodies that are either so mundane they’re dismissible or so outlandish that you cringe while listening. ‘Yes To Everything’ begins with James heartily laughing and moves into a song filled with vocal cracks and a disturbed high pitched guitar solo. ‘Just A Fool’ is a collection of uninventive verses. James holds moments where you’re engaged in the music and rest easy, but alternates between themes so quickly it’s not long before you’re sitting rigid once again. Jim James has used Uniform Distortion as his petri dish, it zigs when it should zag. There is virtue in creating something that doesn’t “work in the frame” as he puts it. But despite the message behind the tracklist, “blanket distortion on society/ media,” this album is a mess with random inclusions of harmonies, unusual instrumental breaks, and unnerving vocals. ‘Shimmer And Disappear’ gives the plot away early on. Like a cosmic carnival of the weird and wonderful, Pram slip into gear for the first time in a decade. It’s a jolly fairground sound that hints at jazz, but only in a way Tom Waits would adopt. Pram are much more than that, and broadly thinking are an experimental collective which has allowed them to release seven quite unique and disparate albums before this one. Having links with Stereolab, Aphex Twin, and even Mohammed Rafi, the band members are known for their remix skills, and various other projects have littered their long hiatus. Now, Across The Meridian showcases their interest in the sounds of exotica, ‘30s jazz, and quite left-of-centre experimentation. The fluid lineup has resulted in a dog’s breakfast of an identity, yet without any discernible detriment. For example ‘Thistledown’ bears the sinister vocals of Rosie Cuckston while other songs are breezy instrumentals. Pram aren’t a band who are afraid of tackling the unexpected and sublime. While similar voices to Cuckston’s can be heard throughout the album, it’s the jack-in-the-box like ‘Ladder To The Moon’ that elevates the listener with its almost classical whimsy and wit. Enchanting.

Now, if you haven’t heard of Tired Eyes before, let me be the first to introduce you. A recently-formed, four-man group, Tired Eyes have been making some very significant waves in the Brisbane alt-rock scene, and for a damn good reason. The content of their album is quite remarkable; on first listen you might liken them to Have Mercy. There’s a touch of new-age Northlane in there, and some punk-tinged vocals that wouldn’t sound out of place in a band far bigger than themselves. What strikes me as setting them apart though, is the balance between that sweet melodic alt-rock sound (which I love with a passion) and something…harder. Punk vocals can go from clean to filth and back to the middle ground faster than anything else, and the guitar work often does the same, but the mixing is slick and near seamless. It makes for a very interesting experience, especially from such a newly-minted band. I recommend Tired Eyes to everyone for many reasons. But the main one here is that you can’t pin them down. There’s something for everyone in each song, and the execution is amazing for an independent release. Definitely a group to keep your eyes and ears tuned to. BY LOCHIE BOURKE
