Festival Guide 2016/2017 FREE
Introduction: Summer is a special time to be an Australian. Think scorching sun and long stretching vistas. Think afternoon barbecues and a fully loaded Hills Hoist. Think beach cricket and a cold beer at sunset. But most of all, think festivals. It’s something that seems to be forgotten when we talk about the great Australian summer, but we understand that festivals are a quintessential part of being Australian – think the chaotic campgrounds and writhing mosh pits, the celebrations with old friends and formation of new ones, the big stages with pulsing lights and rows of tent stalls, the of fields filled with thousands of punters dancing beneath the sun and stars, celebrating life, love, music and art. Think festivals. From Sydney to Perth, Melbourne to Darwin, Brisbane to Adelaide, the Australian summer is jam-packed with awesome festivals celebrating music and art from huge international acts, and our very own homegrown talent. So gear up for summer and the host of festivals set to pop up all round the country, all year long. The Big Ticket has been put together by a hard-working and talented team and is your guide to a myriad of festivals happening around Australia this summer. Summer is fast approaching, so gear up and get excited for another season of great festivals and priceless memories. Adam Marshall

Glamping is all the rage at the moment. Those cold, brutal nights of sleeping on the ground and feeling super groggy the next day can be finally put to rest. The all-Aussie
all-encompassing
festival cricket guide. By Adam Marshall
There’s plenty to do at a festival, that’s for sure. But there are also times when you’re sitting around twiddling your thumbs waiting for the first act of the day to start, or maybe taking some time back at the tent. To alleviate any boredom that might kick in at these intermediate times, we’ve developed a guide to festival cricket. You will need: • A bat, or something that resembles a bat. (stick, unused tentpole, a stack of beercans taped together) • A ball, or something that resembles a ball. (orange, tangled wad of glow-sticks, or that shrivelled beach ball that was bouncing around the mosh earlier that afternoon and somehow came into your possession – anything but a real cricket ball) • Wickets, or something that resembles wickets. (empty box, camping chair, mound of dirty clothing) • Players, or something that resembles players. (at least four) The Rules: • If the ball hits the wickets, or your ball is caught, you’re out. Hang your head in shame and relinquish your bat (whatever it may be) to the person who got you out. Lenience can be given on the first ball for each batter.
• One hand one bounce. The infamous one hand one bounce rule is in play, just make sure you don’t spill your drink in the process. • No LBW. There’s a very low chance that you’ll have a highspeed replay camera floating around at a festival, so best just let these slide. • Five bowl limit. Sure, you think bowling is fun, but so does everybody else. Make sure you hand over the reigns after your fifth bowl, you’ll get another go. • Anyone can play. Cricket is inclusive and so are festivals, so there’s no reason why festival cricket shouldn’t be. Invite any would-be-cricketers over for a bat or a bowl as they stumble passed your awesome pitch. You never know what could come out of it. Let’s face it though – if you really do love your cricket, nothing beats the real thing. Join the 24 million Aussies taking on the Kiwis in the VB One Day International series – December 4 at the SCG, December 6 at Manuka Oval and December 9 at the MCG. More info at cricket.com.au.

tape in case of tent repair emergencies, raincoat, small first aid, insect repellent, toilet paper, rug/tarp, ear plugs, outfits for expression, doof aerobics gear, body paint. The history: Drawing inspiration from the best dance events around the planet, Subsonic harnesses the talents of some of Australasia and Europe’s finest festival folk to deliver a truly worldclass boutique festival experience. Handcrafted stages are adorned with otherworldly décor and multimedia artistry, combining to conjure the ultimate grownup party playground. The first edition was in 2009 and, now in its eighth year, Subsonic Music has hosted and toured a venerable selection of acclaimed live and electronic acts. The ~vibe~: The philosophy underpinning Subsonic is a reflection of the ethos of our kind of people – the kind of people who make the world a better place to live in. A golden rule to live by, so marvellously simple, yet incredibly profound: Just be awesome. thebigticket.com.au
Sustainability: Subsonic Music has commissioned Sustainable Events to study and review our performance across all areas of the festival with view to implementing recommendations both pre and post 2016. Our vision and goal is to make it one of the most sustainable Festivals in Australia. Festivals are about celebration. Why should your punters celebrate? Subsonic Music is the sum of its parts. There is music, arts, culture and lifestyle offerings. However, a major part of the experience and something to celebrate is the disconnection from modern technology and the reconnection of humanity. With no phones and internet, we all truly connect on a human level whilst immersing ourselves in the joy of artistic expression.

gas stove, pots and pans, detergent, brush and washing up bowl, cups and crockery, basic food supplies (ice and basic supplies are available onsite), large water container, shovel and hammer, towels and soap, torch, chairs and table, rope for clothes line. The history: The festival land (now known as Woodfordia) was purchased in July 1994 for the purpose of securing a permanent home for the then Maleny Folk Festival. The festival was first held at the Maleny show-grounds on the Easter long weekend of 1987 and from that time until 1993. After the eighth year it was obvious to all that Maleny Show Grounds could no longer support the growing popularity and the festival moved to the current festival land in Woodford. The ~vibe~: Festival goers will be treated to genre-crossing performances in music; traditional blues, folk and rock, world and indigenous, right through to dance, circus, spoken word, comedy, a series of pertinent conversations in the speaker’s programme and a full-to-the-brim Children’s Festival. thebigticket.com.au
Sustainability: The Queensland Folk Federation is committed to environmental sustainability with annual tree planting a continuing feature of the festival. Since 1997 over 100,000 trees have been planted on the site and festival-goers are now able to camp in the shade of trees that they themselves planted. Alongside this are strict land and wildlife management practices to ensure the land we celebrate on remains clean, beautiful and healthy. Festivals are about celebration. Why should your punters celebrate? The amazing and friendly people and the amazing musicians – Woodford is a hub for interesting characters. Everybody has a story, especially when it comes to the Woodford Folk Festival.
