n o i t c u d o r t in You always remember your first. I remember being a wide-eyed young lad from the country, and my best mate Kevin was trying his best to convin ce me to pack th e tent and head away to some far off land for a weekend of musical goodness. “I don’t have the money,” I said. “Haven’t heard of any of the bands.” I don’t know why I came around in the end, but I’m infinitely glad I did. It was worth every cent, and every single band on the lineup became my new favourite artist. Upon returning to civilisation, my first thought was that I couldn’t wait to d o it again. And that’s exactly what I did, many times over. Many of the greatest nights of my life have tak en place at a music festival. I’ve seen th e most amazing artists d o the most amazing things, had th e most ridiculously incredible experiences with old friends, made profound connections with strangers, and managed to chuck in a touch of self-discovery in the mix. We’re lucky in A ustralia. We get some the biggest and best touring artists com e visit f or festivals that ar e relatively intimate on th e world scale . Not only that, but we’r e also spoilt for choice when it comes to boutique and niche festival offerings. With so many great festivals popping up all over the country, it can be difficult to keep up. That’s wh ere The Big Ticket comes in. The Big Ticket is a comprehensive guide to this great country’s veritable smorgasbord of festival o fferings. No matter what your taste or musical preference, you’ll find more than enough to tickle your fancy here. As well as outlying what is on offer in the coming festival season, we also have plen ty of hints and tips for those diving into the world of festivals for the first time as well as some advice for hardened festival veterans. Plus we have some sweet giveaways, fashion tips, and some tricky trivia for your pleasure. It’s hard not to g et excited while lookin g at th e mammoth list of festivals on o ffer. Each year k eeps on g etting bigger and bigger, and the 2012-2013 season is n ot exception. You can’t really say you’ve lived th e festival e xperience from YouTube streams, Twitter reports, or anything else. You have to be there. As Robin Williams famously declared in Dead Poets Society, “You only live once, that’s the motherfuckin’ motto.” Or something like that, anyway. Lachlan Kanoniuk Editor

PROTIPS Festivals are the greatest. But what does it take to become great at festivals? We run you through some handy hints, whether you’re a festival virgin or a seasoned campaigner.

ENTRY LEVEL

WATER: Not only is it our most precious resource, it’s also heaps important to have a shitload of it on hand during festival times. Most day festivals allow a sealed bottle to be taken into the venue, but check the fine print beforehand. For camping festivals, try not to bother with the massive 15 litre containers. Nothing’s more cumbersome then trying to lift one of those suckers over your head after a big night. Instead, pick up multipacks of the no name 1.5 litre bottles (be sure to recycle ‘em!), most festivals have refill points. RULES: I know we all want to cut loose from the confines of society in the festival realm – but hey buddy, there are still rules. Make sure you check what is and what isn’t allowed at a festival, and keep it in mind that the law doesn’t magically not apply

58.

on festival grounds. Play it safe, don’t overdo it, and look after your pals. SUNSCREEN: Some festivals have sunscreen supplied at First Aid, some have it on sale – but don’t count on either. Pack your own and apply liberally during the day, and make sure your mates do likewise. FIRST AID: Those cats in the First Aid tent are bloody champions, and they’re here to help. If you’re in a bit of strife, make sure you head there asap before things take a turn for the worst. RESPECT: Every single person at the festival is there to have a good time. Punters, staff, volunteers, performers. Don’t ruin it for anyone. Show respect at all times, and if you see one of your mates causing a bit of mischief, tell them to pull their head in, or gently dissuade them from stirring up a ruckus. And fellas, ensure that a safe environment is maintained at all times for the ladies. CARPOOL: Organise with your rock steady crew to work out the most efficient transport strategy to make sure you get there and back safe. Festival traffic can cause unexpected congestion, ensure you keep a safe distance between yourself and the car in front. BRING YOUR TICKET: Seriously. Bring your ticket, dingus. And photo ID.

INTERMEDIATE

block out the sound of your amorous neighbours while you’re trying to drift off to dreamland.

TENT PEGS AND A MALLET: The first moments involving the setting up of camp are pivotal for festival enjoyment. Possession of a mallet guarantees you are one of the most respected figures on the camping grounds, people will be astounded by your amazing foresight and offer gifts of lukewarm tinnies in exchange for your tool. Similarly, bring an excess of tent pegs.

DISPOSABLE CAMERA: Hashtags are for arseholes. Leave the ol’ smartphone at home, pick up a disposable film camera from the supermarket and go to town on the shutter button. Take photos in the day for optimal lighting, and to avoid a roll full of nothing but your friends’ munted night-time faces. Extra points for prolonging the time between the festival and film processing.

TENT SEX: First up, always use a condom. Pack plenty before your arrival (be optimistic!). If you get caught in the moment unprepared, don’t be shy to ask a friend if they have any to spare (they’ll be happy to oblige) or make a quick dash to First Aid to see if they have any complimentary condoms. Also, be as loud as you like! In tent city, nobody can pinpoint where the screams are coming from.

FOOD: Avoid the massive tucker queues and bring your own chippies, fruit, muesli bars, biccies (the baked kind) and mixed nuts for snacks. Step it up with some cooked meals – cous cous with vegies keeps well in the chilly bin, as does a bit of lasagne. But be careful going into the closing days of the festival, some of your tucker may have taken a turn for the worst.

EAR PLUGS: The sound at music festivals is no way near as punishing on the ear drums than it is at intimate club venues. However you should still bring a set of earplugs, as you’ll need something to

GOD MODE

POOL YOUR RESOURCES: Get your shit together with your crew. Organise through a Facebook group or email chain or Google+ Hangout or whatever, see who has what. Gazebo, table, chairs, chilly bins, playing cards, couches, hammocks – reach for the stars!

festivals actually pay you to come and perform. No lines, a rider, the adoration of thousands. Follow your dreams.

WEDDINGS: Tent sex is all well and good (and a lil’ bit nasty), but imagine consummating your matrimonial vows in the context of a music festival! It’s been done before a number of times – BYO celebrant and you’re good to go. JOIN A BAND: Easy. Just start a band with your mates (or just make some sick beats on your laptop), be shit-hot, and get this – the

START A FESTIVAL: Start your own goddamn festival. Some of the biggest events on the calendar started as humble little shindigs in a far-off paddock. But don’t kid yourself, you really need to get your shit together if you’re serious about crafting your own festival mythology. Good luck!
