Brauz Online shopping is no longer reserved for, well, online. At least not according to Brauz. The new app is merging brick-and-mortar with the digital space, enabling you to access local product suggestions, store discounts and more, all based on your location. It’s a pretty neat concept. To celebrate the launch, Brauz has teamed up with the Council of Textile & Fashion for a curated shopping experience. Taking place at VAMFF, CTF Curated will bring together some of our best emerging fashion talent, including LIMB, Citizen Wolf, Lois Hazel, Chorus and Elvie & Leo (pictured). You’ll also have the chance to play with Brauz while you shop. It’s all happening March 9 to 12 in a secret CBD location. Follow @BrauzApp or @ctf_curated for the reveal. Dr. Martens FOOL
Roses are red, violets are blue, Dr. Martens has created a Valentine’s Day collection, especially for you. The February release sees the original 8-eye 1460 boot and the 4-eye English brogue shoe get a tough love update. Both the Joyce HRT and Bentley II HRT feature a smooth grain Venice leather upper in white, a black sole and red lining. But, it’s the toe detailing that really brings the romance. For stockists call 1800 655 154
If you’re looking to play at VAMFF this year, you might want to head down to FOOL. The Greville Street boutique is irreverent when it comes to colour, and will be running a styling workshop as part of the Festival. FOOL designer, Rowena Doolan, will teach participants to express their individuality through colour and shape, in line with the label’s ethos that fashion is too important to be taken seriously. FOOL will also be joining the Fashion Advocate Runway on March 11, celebrating ethical and sustainable fashion. It’s giving new meaning to the phrase 'dress like a fool'. foolclothing.com.au IMAGE MATT WARE

See the Light GIULIA BRUGLIERA WAS A GUEST OF UNIQLO FOR ITS SPRING/SUMMER 17 PRESS TOUR IN JAPAN.
I went to Japan and now I finally ‘get’ UNIQLO
BY GIUL IA BRUGL IER A
UNIQLO is pretty weird, huh. I get it. You walk into store, only to find a million coloured versions of the same quilted jacket, cashmere jumper and those legging-pant things. (Those legging-pant things rule, btw). I know what it’s like, because I was once like you. Where all the other global chain stores made sense, UNIQLO was the anomaly; the foreign second cousin that try as it might, just would not fit in with its retail giant counterparts. But turns out it’s actually the bomb. It took a trip to Japan for me to finally ‘get’ UNIQLO but now that I do, I can’t imagine my life without it. Much like Nutella, or when I discovered ‘rosebud’ on The Sims. So for those still confused by the relevance of Heattech, let me explain.
12
It’s not ‘fashion’ per se The first step on your way to UNIQLO enlightenment, is to understand how to wear it. Once I’d seen UNIQLO in context (i.e. Japan), the brand made a whole lot more sense. I like to analogise it with normcore. When we first discovered normcore it was as boring as it was puzzling. But once we’d seen enough fashion bloggers pull it off, our city embraced it with an unbridled enthusiasm: one that delivered an overabundance of boxy silhouettes and mom jeans. Much like normcore, once you understand UNIQLO, it’s easy to embrace. Also much like normcore, UNIQLO’s key focus is on minimal, wearable staples that are easy to ‘build up’. But fortunately, unlike normcore, there’s much more versatility here. It’s the antithesis of fast fashion This is kind of hard to swallow given that we tend to bundle UNIQLO with the other chain store giants. But think of it as a wholesome apple where the other brands are McDonald’s – it’s pretty much the total exact opposite. UNIQLO rejects the fast fashion model entirely, refusing to manufacture any style it considers to be a passing trend.
Take skinny jeans, for example. It took years before the brand started manufacturing them. At the time, everyone considered our love affair with skinny jeans to be somewhat ephemeral. Obviously that was not the case and today, UNIQLO delivers skinny jeans accordingly. You will literally always have something to wear More visits to UNIQLO = less morning freakouts because yes, you will always have something to wear. Most of what’s in-store is designed to fit in seamlessly with your existing wardrobe. Top for those culottes? Tick. Jacket for that top? Tick. Coat that doesn’t interfere with that culottes/top/jacket sitch? Tick. You get the idea. It’s essentially magic You know when you’ve heard people raving out how ah-mazing their new UNIQLO piece is and you’ve never really understood why? This is why. Essentially, they’re talking about the technical aspect of the product – what makes it durable, washable, flexible, etc. UNIQLO has dedicated an undeniably massive portion of its business to fabric innovation (such as Heattech and Airism), so that it becomes more comfortable and practical for everyday wear. So far they’ve invented puffer jackets that fit in your clutch and singlets that quite literally absorb your body heat. It’s kind of like dressing in the future. uniqlo.com/au

From the Shadows What were you listening to while writing I See You? Romy: It’s hard to say anything specific, just because it’s three different people with different tastes. Not Jamie’s solo album, In Colour? Jamie: No (laughs). I have definitely heard that too much. At one stage we did a road trip from Seattle to LA and we made playlists that had everything on there from jazz, to techno, to electro, to rock. Even the radio… Romy: That was kind of counterproductive because a lot of Jamie’s solo stuff was being played on the radio at the time. Did you find it hard to balance that solo project while writing for this album? Jamie: Well, my tour definitely went on a little longer than expected. Too much fun in Wollongong?
BY E LIZ A SHOL LY
I met Romy Madley Croft and Jamie Smith in their high-rise Melbourne hotel room. With the weather 30 degrees and sunny, Melbourne was showing off. But it seemed I was the only one feeling the heat.
What ensued was a string of extremely successful albums: xx, Coexist and now five years later, I See You.
“Apologies for my sweaty appearance,” I joked. “We haven’t had a day over 20 degrees in ages.”
Jamie: I actually spent New Year’s here last year, touring my solo project for a festival. I spent a fair bit of time in Wollongong last January, which always brings up a few fun memories.
My comments were received with wry smiles that meant either: a) they had not in fact heard my hilarious attempt to lighten the mood, or b) their reputation of hating interviews was entirely correct. With zero sense of shame, I quizzed them about it. “Well, it’s not that we hate interviews, we’re just quite private people,” said Romy. “I think that we’re definitely getting better though.” I hoped so, they’ve been doing this a while. After forming as a duo at the age of 15, Romy and bandmate Oliver Sim met Jamie while studying at Elliott School in Putney, England. Like that, The xx was born.
20
Following an awkward first encounter, I sat with Romy and Jamie to chat road trips, solo projects and one of Australia’s most underrated party cities. Welcome back to Australia! When were you here last?
Jamie: That was literally it, too much fun. The balance shifted from being what I thought was manageable, to us spending too much time apart. Romy and Oliver were finding it hard because it was very on/off on/off. We finally managed to get a lot of time together in London to finish the record. I remember feeling very out of it in 2012 because I didn’t have the Coexist album cover as my iPhone lock screen. How did you come up with it? Romy: I think that in the beginning we chose the name because we liked Xs. It sounds trivial, but it was a very simple decision at the time – Oliver and I were just naming a Myspace when we were 16.
Jamie: You can’t make this stuff up.
When we were working to design the artwork at the beginning, we collaborated with a graphic designer who we thought really got us. But the stuff he showed us was a bit too complicated. I said: “I think it should just be an X?”
You had a big break between albums. When it’s one like Coexist that was so wellreceived, do you feel a lot of pressure to release something similar in terms of the sound?
The first single off the new album, 'On Hold', is definitely a little more pop-y. Is that something you take into account when figuring out the first release? That you want it to be more commercially appealing?
Romy: I think on Coexist we worried a lot more than we may have let on, particularly when it came to writing things that we thought people wanted to hear. I think we just worried what people thought of us. But on this album, we made it over a long period of time, questioning what do we love and what feels right for us, rather than sticking to the rules about what makes an xx song.
Jamie: Obviously we have a lot of input, but I think it’s difficult to have perspective when you’ve been working on something for so long. We listened to the record with a lot of people and tried to gain perspective that way, which really helped. It also helps when you have people around you that you trust.
Wollongong? Really?
I See You is out now. thexx.info

Big & Little Dogs
BOco.
Harnesses are an ideal way to make sure your furry pals are comfortable and safe when they walk. Brisbane-based business, Big & Little Dogs, began with a struggle to find harnesses that would fit different-sized dogs properly. The solution came in the form of cute-to-boot printed harnesses that are reversible and adjustable. If you feel like decking out your pup a little more, there’s also an offering of collars, leashes and bowties in an array of patterns and colours. Everything has been designed for maximum comfort to keep your pooch happy. bigandlittledogs.com
Sure, monogramming your wallet and phone case is nice, but how about your pet accessories? The team behind BOco are dedicated pooch owners and believe a pet’s accessories should be just as unique as their personalities. Each collar and lead in BOco’s collection is created from premium pebbled leather and is available in a range of vibrant colours – think aqua, rose quartz and royal blue. You’ll also have the option to select from gold or silver hardware. And yes, the BOco team will soon be adding monogramming to the range, making for a more pawsonal touch. boco.com.au

Bared Footwear does things a little differently than most. Created by podiatrist Anna Baird, the brand works to design shoes that care for your body from the ground up. Each pair is engineered with a biomechanic footbed, bringing sneaker comfort to shoes that look anything but. Like these very nice monk straps (pictured), for example. The label also offers multiple fitting options, reaching up to size 43 in women’s and size 48 in men’s. It’s all about creating footwear that lets you ‘live every step’. This goes so far beyond great looking shoes. bared.com.au

Showing your love shouldn’t just be reserved for Valentine’s Day. Aletheia & Phos shares this sentiment, with the theme of connection lying at the heart of the brand. Inspired by wandering the world, founder Alicia Millan wanted to create a way for wearers to stay connected to home. Accordingly, the label uses crystals and gemstones across its delicate jewellery range. This year, Alicia is staying true to the brand’s ethos, taking Aletheia & Phos to New York for Capsule, a premier fashion and lifestyle event that gathers the best of international brands. With all jewellery certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council, there’s a lot to love. aletheiaphos.com
03 Snowe
Just as important as the garment itself, is its origin. This is the ethos at the heart of Sydney label, Snowe. Each design combines 100 per cent European cotton fabric and trims with local manufacturing and handfinishing. The process minimises environmental impact and ensures the highest levels of quality are maintained in the construction of each piece. Also key to the Snowe philosophy is the fusion of the softness and directional nature of womenswear, with functional design approaches and tailoring that are often reserved for menswear. The result is a range of shirts and tunics in minimal, modern styles that will slide into any wardrobe with ease. snowe.com.au

Functionality is key when it comes to bags and wallets, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t look good too. The team behind Things Terrific shares this thinking. The collection is expansive, with the usual suspects (handbags, purses, wallets), appearing alongside wash bags, travellers, business sleeves, folios and backpacks in varying colours. Each piece is crafted from top quality, full-grain leather, used for both its individual character and smooth finish. thingsterrific.com.au

05 Meraki Collections
We all know how damaging fast fashion is but how many of us can say we’ve done something about it? Valuing the slow fashion movement, designer Dayana Adones decided to take matters into her own hands and started Meraki Collections. The name means ‘to do something with soul, creativity or love,’ and that’s just what the label does. Founded on values of equality and respect for people and the Earth, Meraki’s pieces are produced in Melbourne, by local manufacturers. The label has a strong focus on craftsmanship, with the small-run collections constructed from high-quality textiles. Topping things off, Meraki donates 10 per cent of all sales to beyondblue. merakicollections.com.au

You know you’ve got talent when you can make the humble line look this good. Odessa Mykytowycz, with her hypnotic style, definitely has it. Stemming from a creative obsession with lines, Odessa searched for different avenues to best display her work. Starting with prints, she has now expanded into earrings, personalised portraits and bright clutches. Made with custom-printed leather, the clutches are also available in smaller, cardholder-sized pouches. The glowing, pulsing effect in her pieces is born from blending and contrasting lines of colour. Proudly constructing every piece by hand, Odessa also takes commissions. odessamyky.bigcartel.com

Some days we struggle with motivation to head to the gym, but we always have a reason to do yoga. A combined love of the practice and the beach was the inspiration for Yogi Peace Club. While we’re increasingly conscious shoppers when it comes to everyday dressing, it’s easy to overlook our choice of activewear. So here’s a timely reminder. At the forefront of the ethical movement is ALAS, a sustainable label working to encourage conscious choices beyond just daywear. Last year saw the label expand from sleepwear into activewear, with the new range focusing on athletic cuts and wearability. The line is made using entirely sustainable materials including an organic stretch cotton and a recycled PET fabric, woven with 17 per cent elastane for flexibility and support. The result is functional and beautiful activewear, but not as you know it. alasthelabel.com
Cashmere may not traditionally be your first choice of activewear, but Birdie Cashmere might just change that. Made from a technical cotton/cashmere blend, the label’s pieces are ultralight, breathable and surprisingly gym-appropriate. Birdie has tapped a unique ratio of natural fibres, pioneered by the label to keep you cool during your sweat sesh and warm once you’re done. Unsurprisingly, the focus here is on comfort and wearable design. Styles are versatile, with the range covering staples like white tees, lightweight hoodies and breton stripes. Ideal for gym and brunch after. Or alternatively, just brunch. Use the code Fashionj to save 15%. birdiecashmere.com

PANA CHOCOLATE, THE RECIPES
HOW TO BE COOL
BUDDHISM FOR BREAK-UPS
Pana Barbounis
Thomas W. Hodgkinson
Meshel Laurie
With all the hype surrounding Pana Chocolate, it was only a matter of time before they released a book. Pana Chocolate, The Recipes is a beautiful hardback, featuring the techniques and recipes for 50-something raw desserts, breakfasts and snacks. An admittedly sceptical Pana fan myself, I was surprised at how healthy most these recipes actually are. I was also pleased with the seemingly minimal preparation time. Did I attempt any of the recipes in the book? No. Will I ever? Probably not. Unless you have a penchant for buying unnecessarily overpriced abstract health foods, neither will you. But, did I enjoy spending an hour of my day looking at different pictures of chocolate? You bet I did.
Let me start by saying that while this is a great book, please don’t ever read it in public. You don’t want that on your rep. Next, let’s just consider what level of selfassurance it takes to author something like this (a lot). Accordingly, How to be Cool is a witty, biting and boldly authoritative guide to cool. It identifies ‘Nine Defining Qualities of Cool’ and educates on a cumulative 150 idols, ideals and concepts to improve your coolness. Hodgkinson has literally covered the field of cool, touching on everything from ‘jazz cool’ (Miles Davis) to ‘geek cool’ (Steve Jobs). He also gets pretty meta at a point, asking ‘is cool cool?’ Fortunately, he seems sufficiently self-aware of how non-cool it is to study to be cool. But he doesn’t care, which is cool in itself, no?
Meshel Laurie is one of those polarising people. I adore her, so perhaps take this review with a grain of salt. However, I think the fact I really, genuinely, thoroughly enjoyed Buddhism for Break-ups has got to speak for something, given I am not going (nor have I ever gone) through a serious breakup. Perhaps it means I have no idea what I’m talking about. Or perhaps it means the principles of Buddhism discussed are universally relevant and that Meshel’s words are honest, comforting, hilarious and encouraging. (It might also mean both. They’re not mutually exclusive). Regardless, for anyone going through a break-up right now, why not try it? You’ve got nothing to lose except $29.99.
ALBUM REVIEWS I SEE YOU
RUN THE JEWELS 3
The xx
Run The Jewels
With this title, The xx emerge from the dark, exposing themselves for the first time to a broader audience. It's not so much that they've suddenly turned 'commercial', but perhaps that they’ve relented to the idea of the Top 40 embracing more eclectic styles. It’s through this The xx have finally struck the delicate balance between embracing their success and delivering conceptual art. The opener, for example, is an unapologetic party song – ghostly and ambient, sure, but it opens with horns. Horns! Despite all this, it does venture inwards at times, so as not to lose their most loyal fans. But count I See You as their coming out party: proud, re-energised and as creative as ever.

It's about now, less than a month into President Trump's questionable service, that the US needs artists like Run The Jewels. Killer Mike and El-P return to spit rhymes to the converted, about the evil of the elite, public disobedience and violence. “With a gun and a knife in our waistband / Went to war with the Devil and Shaytan / He wore a bad toupee and a spray tan...my job is to fight for survival,” we hear on ‘Talk To Me’. If that’s not an effective call to arms right now, then nothing is. This is what hip hop is for. And RTJ3 is, in a way, a return to the old school roots of hip hop as protest art. Apart from the politics? It’s a really fucking great record.
THE KIDS WILL KNOW IT'S BULLSHIT Dune Rats If stoner-Aussie-surf-rock is your thing, then this is the album for your summer. And if it’s not, well, why not? It’s the quintessential antidote to the seriousness of Tame Impala. This is the kind of album that was also made in a garage, but with a sense of humour that winks at Straya, rather than erring into joke territory. At first glance it’s a fairly simple, fun rock album. But when you dive deeper into the lyrics, like “I got a nice dream / Not so bad to get through / Not too late / Where do we go from here?” you start to realise that this is an album about the uncertain future that Gen Z faces. Perhaps the angst is the same as our own, or perhaps everything is worse these days. But at least the kids will know it’s all bullshit... right?
