GOOD CMPNY GOOD CMPNY is back with a second collection, updating its minimal aesthetic for 2017. The Neopolitan drop features a more considered palette of black, white, grey and a very lovely peach, with an increased focus on quality and embroidered logos for the new season. Neopolitan launches May 27, with pieces available for pre-order now. goodcmpny.com
Deadly Ponies
Autark Autark is bringing a touch of luxury to the slow fashion movement. All pieces are designed and produced in Adelaide, with small production runs to reduce wastage and environmental impact. Breathing fresh life into classic investment pieces, Autark adds an innovative spin to wardrobe staples. Think crisp white shirts with box pleats and flared pants with brass eyelet details. Emphasising its commitment to luxury, only natural fibres have been used across the winter range, including luxurious cottons, cotton velvet and silk. autarklabel.com

Deadly Ponies has taken a different tack for its latest collection, drawing inspiration from East London's Pearly Kingdom. The 19th Century subculture originated from Henry Croft, an orphaned street sweeper known for his 'pearly' suit, decorated with Mother of Pearl buttons to raise money for charity. Deadly Ponies' Pearlies collection is embellished accordingly, with the inclusion of the ‘Lucky Charm’ keyring to raise funds for Lifewise, a community working to re-house the homeless. deadlyponies.com

Mad Rabbit Kicking Tiger Mad Rabbit Kicking Tiger bags are known for their clean lines and geometric shapes. The Los Angelesbased label was established in 2010 by architect, Tom Pen, delivering a modern interpretation of classic styles. Drawing on his background, Pen is inspired by clean and pure form, looking to cityscapes, architectural structures and coexisting natural elements. The result is a collection of bags in a class of its own. Functional features include removable media sleeves, while materials are highly durable, socially conscious and vegan-friendly. mrktaustralia.com.au
CO:HOME If your penchant for homewares is getting a little out of hand, you may want to stop reading. Cotton On has announced the expansion of its CO:HOME line, branching into lighting, wall art, loungewear and gifts. That means a lot more to love (great) and a lot less money in your pocket (not so great). The news aligns with a vibrant AW17 drop that sees an increased focus on print and texture. An updated palette plays with mustard, olive, plum and faded emerald, adding to neutral tones for the new season. cottonon.com
ADCTIV
Wolf & Mishka Inspiration often strikes in unique ways. For designer Natalia Pye, it came via a book of Russian nursery rhymes that was lovingly created by her great-grandmother almost 100 years ago. Like the heirloom, all Wolf & Mishka clothing, accessories and homewares are made with love and crafted to be treasured for years to come. Passionate about local and thoughtful production, the brand’s focus is on designing for the individual, rather than the masses. The winter collection takes inspiration from the textures and landscape of the Cumberland River, just outside of Lorne in Victoria. wolfandmishka.com.au

Nice undies don’t have to come with a hefty price tag. Australian owned and designed, ADCTIV was created to bring the women of Australia the high quality and affordable underwear they deserve. ADCTIV’s current offering consists of crop tops, thongs and matching sets, which are available in three different ranges: Classic, Monochromatic and Pop-Colour. All collections feature flexible cotton/ elastane jersey construction and come in a variety of comfy cuts. adctiv.com

Nikel & Sole Nikel & Sole has served up an AW17 collection that’ll have you wanting to replace everything in your wardrobe. The Melbourne label’s seasonal offering delivers a range of knitwear made from refined yarn and natural fibres including wool, mohair and silk. Soft-washed leather, locally-sourced jewellery and accessories also join the collection. Regularly collaborating with emerging artists, Nikel & Sole’s new collection features a printed scarf designed by Llewellyn Skye. nikelandsole.com.au
Lonely Lonely’s new swimwear campaign is really something. Not that we’re surprised. Exploring notions of freedom, the images were shot on New Zealand’s South Island. The untouched landscape of cascading mountains and crystal blue waters is representative of the label’s ethos, that we are most beautiful in our natural state. Lonely muses, Derya Parlak, Georgia Pratt and Talea Tatupu, front the campaign which was shot by long-time Lonely collaborators, Zara Mirkin and Harry Were. The swimwear itself is minimal, with a primary palette of dusty pink and olive complementing the wild surroundings. lonelylabel.com

Miss Molly
Kesem Boy
Environmentally-friendly bedding and sleepwear is the short way to describe Miss Molly. But there's a little more to know than that. The brand uses French flax linen across its designs, a completely natural and renewable resource that’s 100 per cent biodegradable and recyclable. It’s also lightweight, making it ideal for the Australian climate. Drawing influences from Scandinavia and Japan, Miss Molly’s offering is minimal, with a focus on fabric. Online you’ll find a selection of sheets, duvet covers, bath towels, kimonos and pyjamas, all waiting to come home with you. missmolly.com.au
Inspired by the sun and surf, Talia Golden launched her interior design business in 2013. Since then, Kesem Boy has ventured into textiles, producing bold and unique designs that embody a passion for colour play and mixed textures. The range of bedding is designed in Sydney and manufactured in Portugal, proudly made from 100 per cent cotton. Each piece is reminiscent of a coastal lifestyle, luxuriously constructed from the highest quality fabrics. Kesem Boy believes in good karma, encouraging shoppers to support local business and the Australian design community. kesemboy.com
Masini & Chern
Jagger Sleepwear
Masini & Chern understands there are times when you need to dress up for bed. Its pieces are created with these situations in mind, like breakfast with house guests and lazy holiday mornings. A little nicer than your old trackies and oversized tee, both men and women can pick up a luxurious pyjama set, robe or sleep mask. There’s also the option of custom embroidery, with up to eight characters. With contemporary designs that blur the line between sleepwear and daywear, Masini & Chern closes the gap between comfort and style. masiniandchern.com
Basics aren’t boring. If anything, they’re the epitome of comfort. Jagger Sleepwear thinks so, too. The brand delivers a range of minimal pyjamas, made in Sydney from sustainable fabric. Living by the ethos that what you wear is an investment, the brand offers well-made, ethicallymanufactured pieces that go the distance. Jagger’s fabric is organically grown in India before being sent to Sydney where it’s woven and dyed with non-synthetic dyes. The brand’s current offering spans sleep shorts, tees and tanks for women, in a simple and practical palette of white and black. jaggersleepwear.com.au

High Rotation
You’ve collaborated with some pretty big names – Anderson .Paak, Zayn and MØ. How do your collaborations come about? It’s definitely different every time. Sometimes we do it together with them in the studio and sometimes we’ll start making something, and imagine someone that would be sick on it. It kind of depends whether we’re in the same places as people. We’re always on tour, so getting people in the studio is sometimes difficult. And sometimes you play ‘Livin’ It Up’ by Ja Rule for someone and if they like it, then you know the collab will be amazing? That’s literally my favourite Ja Rule song. I’d be disappointed if it wasn’t. So, how did you get your name? Do snakes even have hips? Just before I was making beats, I had this really tight pair of jeans. Then one time I was hanging out with a group of friends and I pulled the pants up really high and did this dance. Then everyone started calling me Snakehips. Then you met James and thought, ‘I’ve got the perfect band name’? Well, I was already making beats under that name. Then it kind of just got too hard to change it. And now we’re here, stuck with a stupid name.
BY E LIZ A SHOL LY
You’d be hard-pressed to find an Australian radio station that doesn’t have Snakehips on rotation. From ‘All My Friends’ with Chance The Rapper and Tinashe, to ‘Don’t Leave’ featuring MØ, Oliver Lee and James Carter have made a habit of producing number one tracks. Ahead of their Australian festival tour as part of Groovin the Moo, we caught up with Oliver for a candid conversation about Australia, Ja Rule and naughty tour behaviour. Hi Ollie, thanks so much for chatting to me. Where are you at the moment? I’m actually in London, it’s super early here so apologies in advance for the tired, morning voice. Totally forgiven. You guys have toured Australia a few times, are you excited to come back? So excited. I love Australia, especially Melbourne. We’re going with Groovin the Moo to a load of new places we haven’t been to yet, like Canberra. So that will be really cool.
16
Groovin the Moo’s lineup is so sick. Who are you excited to be sharing the bill with? I know George Maple and Hayden James, who are good buddies. Also, The Darkness is playing and I literally had no idea they were even a thing anymore, so that will be cool. How do Australian crowds compare to those overseas? The first time we went out there and played it was like ‘wow, these people really get what we’re doing’. Australian crowds are just so receptive, energetic and cool. It’s always such a fun place to play. Who are some Australian acts you feel are doing cool things at the moment? There’s a dude called Feki that I’ve just started listening to. He’s got a fucking tune called ‘Run Away’. It’s, like, well emotional but it’s got this huge drop in it. Also, Wave Racer is doing cool things. So you and James are the duo behind Snakehips. How did you guys meet? It was actually super random. We were in a bar in Hong Kong and we were from similar places in London, and were into the same kind of music. I actually think we bonded over a love of Ja Rule. Ja Rule? Say no more. That’s how I make all my friends. Right? I feel if people don’t like Ja Rule that’s a real deal-breaker.
No, I definitely appreciate it. I was just curious more about snake anatomy than anything. Ha! I actually have no idea if snakes have hips. What’s the naughtiest thing you’ve ever done? Oh god, I don’t know. I must have done a load of naughty stuff. What about in Australia, what’s the naughtiest thing you’ve ever done here? We’re always really well-behaved in Australia. But actually, there was this festival a couple of years ago where James stole a load of roast dinners from the catering tent. That’s the most British theft I’ve ever heard of. Well, I guess the full stomach was worth it. For recurring fans like myself, what kind of new things can we expect from your set this time around? We’ve got a bunch of new stuff to play, and the show is always evolving every time we tour. But I guess we just always try to keep the good vibes up and have a party. It’s going to be good fun. You can catch Snakehips at Groovin the Moo and on their national tour throughout May. gtm.net.au

Ten Tips to Start out as a Freelancer …and look (kind of) professional while doing it
ILLUSTRATION TWYLAMAE
Freelancing can be amazing. You get to wear trackies to work most days, your commute is approximately 10 seconds and the closest thing to experiencing work drama is your dog getting annoyed that you can’t type AND throw the ball simultaneously. There are also downsides – mainly in the form of mountains of tax receipts that may or may not kill you via suffocation (or boredom, whichever comes first). So if you’re starting out as a freelancer, learn from my mistakes and hit the ground running with these tips.
BY BIANCA O’NEILL 1. Get an ABN The first step in boring accounting information that you need to know (yes, there are more of these coming) is that an ABN will make you look totes #legit. Plus, most companies require an ABN for invoicing all that freelance work you’re about to do. And something, something the tax department. It’s pretty easy to get, just apply for a sole trader ABN via abr.gov.au. 2. Create a logo This is probably the most fun part… until you realise it looks like an MS Paint experiment from 1996. Everyone has a graphic designer friend so beg for their help and offer them wine. And make sure it represents what you’re doing. Like, would you hire a digital strategist with a logo that reminds you of an Etsy store selling knitted dog jumpers? Just sayin’. 3. Create a website and professional email address Buy a cheap URL, add a bespoke email address, install Wordpress for free and grab one of those free Wordpress templates. It takes time and a little money, but it’s worth it.
18
4. Create professional social media accounts This should be a given, but under no circumstances should you promote your business on your personal social media accounts. Think about all the stupid stuff you share on there on the reg – not to mention all those dog videos. That way, when you post a drunken selfie on Saturday night, you won’t regret your new client seeing it the next day. 5. Create a letterhead/invoice template Now that you have a logo and all that other fancy jazz, create a standard document in Word for your invoices. Include information such as your ABN, email, newly-acquired professional social handles and business address. Hiring a PO box is always a good thing to do if you work from home, for privacy. 6. Pimp your LinkedIn profile Sure, it’s the most boring of the social media accounts, but it can legitimately pull in business if you give it the same love and attention as your Instagram selfies. OK, maybe 50 per cent of that love and attention. Ensure you create a new ‘position’ as a freelancer with your business website and contact details. Also, add new clients and results as they come in, to prove you’re pulling in work. And for god’s sake, please use a professional photo.
7. Print business cards I know it seems lame to print business cards when it’s just you. But I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been at an event and someone has asked for my contact details for an upcoming job. Writing your email address on someone’s hand ain’t cute, kids. 8. Get recommendations and testimonials It’s a drag, but it’s totally essential to ensure new clients feel like they can put their trust in you. When a job goes well, make sure you follow up and ask for a recommendation on LinkedIn and a testimonial to add to your website. 9. Pitch, and never stop pitching Think it’s easy to keep the work (and sweet, sweet cash) flowing? Think again. You have to hustle every day if you’re planning to make this your new work life. I email pitches while I’m on the tram, submit draft proposals while I’m waiting for a coffee, and make content on weekends. Just like Monday coffee pictures on Instagram, it never stops. Ever. 10. Go above and beyond to create repeat business Last but not least, do a great job. I can’t emphasise enough that actually just doing a great job is 99 per cent of being a successful freelancer. If you go above and beyond, they’ll come back again and again. Which means pretty much one thing: mama’s upgrading from 2 Minute Noodles to a steak dinner this week. Ooooooh yeahhhhh.

Craftsmanship and quality lies at the forefront of the Booker & co philosophy. Designer Karen Booker creates architectural women’s footwear which is designed, patterned and prototyped in Melbourne. Pieces are then handcrafted in Bali by skilled artisans using supple, high quality leathers. Advocating for the slow fashion movement, Booker & co believes that quality shoes are an investment and should last longer than a single season. All styles can be resoled for a lifetime of wear and enjoyment. You can shop the Booker & co collection online or at the brand’s Shoe Gallery and Atelier, located at 316 Rathdowne Street, Carlton North VIC. bookerandco.com.au
Lagom Studio isn’t your typical online store. Julia Mylne and Harrison Sandeman-Strewe launched the website in 2015, frustrated by a lack of ethical clothing choices. It's leading the movement towards a more sustainable fashion industry by ensuring labels meet a range of certified categories integral to Lagon Studio's central ethos. The store seeks to promote a return to slow fashion, encouraging consumers to reject the fast fashion cycle and purchase fewer quality items. Online you’ll find FJ faves Kowtow, Bhalo, Shaina Mote, Penny Sage and more. lagomstudio.com

There are a few things you need to know about brothers Leroy and Eli Pausigere and their eponymous label, Leroy & Eli. For starters, they’re sick of the excessive use of polyester in fashion and therefore create a range of 100 per cent cotton T-shirts. Localising the manufacturing process in every aspect, the brand offers an alternative to mass-produced streetwear. Leroy & Eli uses its pieces as a medium to comment on the culture of consumption. With the aim to support free-thinking individuals, the resulting collections explore dark truths about the world through satirical, lighthearted prints. leroyandeli.com.au
Jiggerjagger might be new on the scene, but it’s making its colourful presence known. The brand’s speciality is its bright statement pieces, designed to inject life and personality into your wardrobe. Founder Jo Breach is interested in the positive impact that colour can have on our wellbeing and with this in mind, she’s producing clothes that are smileinducing. Ethically made in Australia and Bali in small runs, Jiggerjagger combines simple silhouettes with exclusive (and mood-lifting) prints. And shipping’s free Australia-wide. Studio 11:11 is the collaborative project of two interior designers. The duo approaches their designs with an eye for architectural aesthetics which reflect the creative soul of Melbourne. This philosophy results in bags that are minimal, considered and timeless in both style and durability. Pieces are all designed and crafted locally and, given the sophisticated nature of the manufacturing process, each piece is an intricate work of art. The brand has also recently released its latest design, the 11:11:03 Mini Fold bag. studio-11-11.com
Peony Kisses is the creation of young entrepreneur, Marissa Payne. At only 16 years old, she’s launched (and selffunded) her own accessories label. But aside from proving inspiring, the range is also genuinely impressive. All pieces are designed in Australia and made from high quality, 100 per cent genuine leather. You can shop the range at Marissa’s online store, where you’ll find a selection of totes, cross body bags and wallets in six different colours. Postage is free globally and Afterpay is also available. Unsurprisingly, we’re tipping Peony Kisses as one to watch. peonykisses.com

Sara Bailes is a name you’ve probably heard around town. After designing for Karen Walker and Gorman (no biggie), this impressive lady launched her eponymous label in 2015. All Sara Bailes collections are designed in Australia and produced by a small, dedicated team in Indonesia. Her work features locallysourced fabrics, original prints and natural fibres that combine classic shapes and a contemporary aesthetic. With over 10 years' experience in the fashion industry, the vision for Sara Bailes is strong, creating pieces that embrace femininity with a tailored edge. sarabailes.com
Getting ready for a night out can be a chaotic affair. One that often sees your wardrobe strewn around the room, while you complain you have nothing to wear. Friends, meet Madola. The label delivers sophisticated designs for the elegant at heart. Intricate detailing is central to Madola's formalwear, which is crafted using the highest quality materials and the best design techniques. Each season brings new silhouettes, with a selection of designs featuring in-built corset construction. Media and trade can check the designs out in-person at The Suites during MBFWA. madola.com.au

Follow the Leader with Vice President of Creative for Napoleon Perdis, Kate Squires
Sometimes, the best way to further your own career is by learning about someone else's. We sat down with Vice President of Creative for Napoleon Perdis, Kate Squires, to learn a little about her journey. From starting out in retail to working in product and strategy development, she’s proof that hard work pays off.
48
Tell us a bit about your journey to Vice President of Creative for Napoleon Perdis? I started as a student, then a retail makeup expert, and have worked as hard as I can to get to where I am today. While based from our concept stores, I spent time as a trainer, educating our other retail artists about product and technique. I was also teaching courses and workshops to aspiring artists through the Napoleon Perdis Makeup Academy.
How important has education been in your career development? Crucial. I’m a strong believer in self-development, however, there is some science to makeup technique, so it’s important you learn the basics. Having an experienced artist share their knowledge is a much faster path to success than trying to figure it out on your own, especially when it comes to the world of runway and editorial.
Then I moved into our Artistry Team. My role within the Artistry Team still saw me teaching and in retail, but I also got to spend more time in the industry. I’m now lucky enough to be involved in product and strategy development, and social content. I also spend time on the business side of things, which gives days a really well-rounded balance.
Why is education so important to the Napoleon Perdis brand? Why have all this knowledge at our fingertips and not share it? Makeup is more than just little pots and tubes of foundation and lipstick. It’s important to Napoleon that he empowers customers with knowledge, to hopefully make a difference in their lives.
What have been the pivotal moments in your career? Moving states was a huge one. I grew up in a small country town, so I already had to move to have access to the industry. When I was offered a position on the Artistry Team at head office, I couldn’t say no. I’ve been really lucky that I’ve always been approached about new roles. However, I would never have been approached if I hadn’t put in the hard work. You can’t take shortcuts or give less than 100 per cent, it gets noticed and can be detrimental to your reputation.
Any advice for others wanting to pursue a career in the beauty industry? Realise it’s not always so beautiful! Most of the time it is a really fun life but, when you’re on a shoot, in the freezing cold and ankle deep in mud (circa 2005 ANTM), you can find yourself questioning your love for it all. Be prepared to work hard and unless it’s against your moral code, don’t say no to anything, especially when you’re first starting out. napoleonperdis.com/aus/makeup_academy

An all natural tonic, the new release is an exotic fusion of natural salts and essential root extracts, designed to deliver wild, tousled locks. It features willowherb to prevent dandruff and regulate oil production, while green tea and zinc work to provide UV protection. triumphanddisaster.com.au

INTO THE WATER
BASED ON A TRUE STORY
THE ONE
Paula Hawkins
Delphine de Vigan
John Marrs
The gifted mind that brought us The Girl on the Train has released another deliciously twisted thriller. Into the Water is very Scandi-noir in approach, following a small town in the wake of a local woman’s suicide. Like The Girl on the Train, there are multiple gripping storylines that raise more questions than answers. That is, until the final page. Hawkins’ literary voice(s) are masterful, too, with subtle adaptations for each character. Steeped in metaphors and symbolism, the novel is artistic in approach. But, at the end of it all, there’s still that juicy ‘sting in the tail’ we’re craving.
The best thrillers are the ones that stay with you, that follow you. Such was the case with Based on a True Story. In short, it’s about an insidious friendship that slowly sours. Poisons would probably be the more accurate word. As Delphine’s newfound friendship with ‘L’ intensifies (we never know her full name), our protagonist becomes increasingly isolated and reliant on this stranger. Slowly, Delphine’s paranoia grows. There’s a great deal of ambiguity throughout, making the unravelling events all the more creepy. Don’t expect a page-turner, as it moves quite slowly. But the pace is deliberate and nothing short of genius.
A little like an episode of Black Mirror, The One is a little too close to reality for comfort. It starts with a dating site that promises to match users with ‘the one’ based on a swab of their DNA. From there, the novel follows five characters in parallel. It’s gripping from the start, and quickly builds in both intensity and pace. With literally every hallmark of a bestseller (terminal illness, serial murder, infidelity), it borders on overkill at times. But The One is enjoyable nonetheless. A guilty pleasure, of sorts. You can expect a few lamp-on, late nights ahead.
ALBUM REVIEWS
HUMANZ Gorillaz Oh man. I really, really wanted to love this one… and I do, occasionally. But for any die-hard Gorillaz fan, it’s frankly not their best work. A long-awaited return from the cartoon band that delivered gamechanging albums in Demon Days and Plastic Beach, the band frequently misses the mark on Humanz. I can’t tell if it’s the noted lack of Damon’s bone-chilling slow-rapping, or the unusual collaboration choices, or just the songs themselves, but there’s something missing. The only song that feels like it was made by Gorillaz is the jamming, down and dirty ‘Saturnz Barz'. Perhaps, ironically, for an album titled Humanz, the thing that’s missing? I think it’s the heart.

STRANGER THAN STRANGERS APES
From Gorillaz to APES, and a debut album that’s been four years in the making. Stranger Than Strangers is the latest from a young Melbourne band that have been on so many radars for so many years, I’m surprised the cops haven’t picked them up for public disturbance yet. Opening with their hit 2014 single ‘Pull the Trigger’, I’m happy to say they’ve progressed nicely in the last two years or so. ‘If You Want It’ is a gritty, twisted love song that I’d happily listen to on repeat, ‘Fourth Point’ is a riot and ‘Dimension’ is just the kind of minor-ish, stomping rock that Wolfmother was desperately trying to be. Definitely worth a second play – and maybe even a third and fourth.
THE WATER San Cisco San Cisco have always been a festival favourite in Australia. Their happy, fun indie-pop vibes pair perfectly with summer breezes and a can of your favourite tipple. Their latest album, The Water, is no different. The only question here is, just how much are they coasting at this point? How many times can we hear a jerky-pop song with cutesy-witty lyrics? I’d like to see them push past tracks like ‘Kids Are Cool’ and ‘That Boy’, and into fresher territory with something that feels completely different – something like the retro-tinged ‘Waiting For The Weekend’. Overall, it’s not like I hated it. It’s a solid and entertaining album for anyone looking to recapture those summer feels as the weather cools. Is it wrong to want more?
