Wrangler Just in time for summer, Wrangler Australia has released its first-ever swimwear line. The nostalgic collection features two styles: a one-piece inspired by iconic supermodel of the ’70s Gia Carangi and a bikini that’s giving us serious ’90s vibes. The onepiece features a low-cut neck, super low back and is available in four colourways. The bikini comes in a metallic spice colour, featuring tonal embroidery and adjustable straps. The beach awaits. WRANGLER.COM.AU
Baby-G Your favourite ’90s watch has just been given a 2017 update, courtesy of Emma Mulholland. Following on from its designer collaboration with Romance Was Born last year, Baby-G has tapped Mulholland to update an existing watch design. The timepiece arrives in a bright yellow colourway, with the designer’s floral Happy Hawaii print on the wrist strap. With a super-limited run of 100 watches, you’ll need to be quick if you want to get your hands on one. Nab it for $229 from Myer, Goldmark and other selected boutiques. BABY-G.SHRIRO.COM.AU
Converse Converse has merged the best of both worlds by combining a low-top Chuck Taylor with Nike Flyknit technology. The resulting collection sees the classic take on a whole new level of comfort. It follows on from the success of the brand’s high-top, which also received the Nike treatment back in April. In the low-top version, expect a microsuede Flyknit upper, Lunarlon sock liner and a fused toe cap. The limited-edition collection arrives in black, white, grey and red and is available at Converse stores and online for $140. CONVERSE.COM.AU

Karen Walker Karen Walker’s iconic Runaway Girl has turned 16 and to celebrate her coming of age, she’s received a pearl. The hero of the brand’s new Girl with a Pearl range is the limited-edition Runaway Girl necklace (pictured), which sees a pearl dangling from the icon’s stick in place of her usual bindle. Runaway Girl was introduced to the world in 2001 and has since appeared on all manner of clothing, jewellery and accessories, injecting her sense of adventure into KW’s pieces. The capsule also features earrings and rings in gold and silver with soft pink pearl accents. It's designed to introduce the pearl to a new generation in a contemporary way.

UNC. UNC is a clothing project focusing solely on the humble utility jumpsuit. At the core of the brand is the intention to challenge the notion of trends. In line with this philosophy, it releases just one style at a time. All garments are a twist on the label’s base design, which is a unisex piece inspired by boilersuits of the ’70s. UNC’s latest drop proves you can wear a jumpsuit yearround, with relaxed arms, short cuffed sleeves and a wide leg for extra comfort. Select from sandstone, granite and terracotta colourways. Rooster’s Rook You’d be forgiven for thinking that timber and fashion are two things that can’t be put together. But Rooster’s Rook is doing just that. The sustainable label is transforming raw wood into lightweight statement pieces that are functional and handcrafted with precision. Its handbags are made in Melbourne from recycled, reclaimed and sustainable Australian wood, with each timber’s origin traceable on the Rooster’s Rook website. And because no two pieces of timber are the same, each bag is one of a kind. ROOSTERSROOK.COM.AU

Mileneal Mileneal knows the importance of a good timepiece. It also recognises that young people are often not financially equipped to buy high-end watches and believes they shouldn’t have to pick between price or quality. To bridge this gap, the label is launching a crowdfunding campaign to fund a line of affordable, high-quality timepieces. MUSIC
Singing the Blues WORDS BY TARA SMITH
It's time you put Sydney-based, indie rock group Noire on your playlist.
If you were to look out across a desolate landscape, Some Kind of Blue would be the soundtrack you’d listen to. At least, that’s what Jessica Mincher imagines. She’s one half of Sydney-based indie rock band Noire, alongside long-time friend Billy James. The two met eight years ago, having grown up in the same small country town. A mutual friend brought them together, when he asked Jessica and Billy to collaborate on a music project. Before long, Jessica and Billy started their own. Their debut album is a mix of dark, melancholic pop songs, full of ’80s synths and slow guitar riffs. Jessica sings, while Billy plays guitar. Some Kind of Blue was written over two months, on an isolated farm in Queensland which belongs to Jessica’s parents. A far cry from the roar of Sydney where the two now reside. “It was good just having this beautiful little house with a fireplace and a bathtub out in the middle of nowhere, with no TV and no reception,” says Jessica. “Every morning we’d try and do at least three hours [of work]. We’d go for a coffee and start work by 9am, then we’d work until midday and have the rest of the day to do whatever we wanted.”
14
The scenery has changed since then, with the duo swapping the quiet country town of Amamoor for Italy’s Cinque Terre. They’re on a short break while they tour Europe for the first time. “We got here three weeks ago and we’ve played three shows, two in Paris and one in Berlin. Now we’re having a bit of a holiday before we go back to Paris to play another show,” Jessica tells me. The first leg of the tour has already been a highlight for the band, with Noire playing sets at David Lynch’s club in Paris. “We’re such fans of David Lynch, I think getting a show at his club and the atmosphere there… that was really special to us. There are certain places you want to play at and that was somewhere we’ve always want to play.” In Berlin, the duo supported New Zealand artist Fazerdaze for a sold-out show. “The crowd was amazing. In Australia, everyone kind of talks when you’re playing, which is cool and I like that, but here, everyone was quiet. It was 400 people in a room, and everyone was there to listen to the music.” Having already played multiple shows alongside Cold War Kids, Alex Lahey and Tiny Little Houses, the future of Noire looks bright. So what else can we expect from this small-town-turned-international indie band?
Apparently, a lot. Jessica is one of the women behind The Ladies Network, a multi-platform agency for females and gender-fluid creatives. Between touring with Noire, she takes care of the music content and PR for the website, a job that allows her to support artists in similar circumstances as herself. “For girls, it’s about building that confidence so you feel comfortable putting out what you’re sharing. In the early stages, that’s really important,” she says. While this is the first full-length release from Noire, the band is adjusting to the scene just fine, with their European tour underway and an impending Australian tour in November to follow. In fact, they’re already looking to the next album, with a studio set up in their small Italian apartment. “We want to get the next album out hopefully as soon as possible, maybe next year. We’re also working with a friend at the moment on a bit of film scoring, so we’d like to get into that as well.”
You can catch Noire on its Australian tour in November. FACEBOOK.COM/WEARENOIRE

Thank Goodness WORDS BY GIULIA BRUGLIERA ILLUSTRATIONS BY TWYLAMAE
As we emerge from a seemingly endless winter, it’s easy to feel emotionally yuck. There’s something about Netflix binges, bed snacks and refusing to take off your pyjamas for the delivery man that leaves the soul searching for more. So to get us on our way to being good and proper citizens, we propose a spring clean of the soul. Starting small, of course.

TIP YOUR BARISTA
REPLY TO OLD MESSAGES
TAKE SOMEONE’S DOGGO FOR A WALK
Here is a person that physically toils each morning to make your day better. And we think that’s just beautiful. Your barista deserves a tip more than anyone and yet, when was the last time you did that? Never? It’s easy to forget when you’re in the habit of tapping $4 from your bankcard every morning. Don’t beat yourself up though. Instead tomorrow, come prepared with a little cash and slide it across the till as a thank you. You go Glen Coco.
We know you have them. We all have them. These are the old messages from even older friends that you left unread, then opened, then forgot about because it was too much effort to reply. But now, as you flick through the pages of this magazine, you certainly have time to write back as a good and proper person would. Look, we’ll even wait for you…
This is like a gift from heaven for all those involved. The owner will sigh sweet relief as they’re released from dog-walking responsibilities for a day. The puppy will stop for upwards of 10 nervous wees as they set off for an exciting new adventure. And you, my friend, will get the triple whammy benefits of exercise, fresh air and spending time with a dog (undeniably the greatest gift of all).
SEND A THANK YOU CARD
LEAVE YOUR PHONE IN YOUR BAG
FRAME A PHOTO
It’s a well-established fact that snail mail is the most exciting to receive, making it one of the top ways to show someone your appreciation. It’s also considered more thoughtful than sending flowers, because of its multistep process. You’re required to select a card, pen a message in your own handwriting, locate the correct address, purchase a stamp and find a postbox. While potentially exhausting, the fruits of your labour will likely be stuck to the recipient’s fridge, making your efforts worthwhile.
This is perhaps both the easiest and hardest way to spread goodness. Put simply, our phones have transcended device status and become more like fifth limbs. So while this practice seems simple in theory, in reality, it’s really quite hard. But practice makes perfect, they say. Sure, you might miss out on hilarious memes and Bachelorette recaps but in lieu, you may actually connect with another person in a meaningful way. How bou dah?
Similar to the thank you card, the delivery of a framed photo implies a great deal of thought was given to the recipient. It’s bloody delightful. And yet it costs next to nothing. With little financial investment required, you can easily execute this one on your next trip to Kmart, with both printing and frames located in the same vicinity. If there’s a gift more heartwarming than a framed photo, we haven’t seen it. In fact, take a photo of it, frame it and mail it to us.

Sign of the Times WORDS BY TARA SMITH ILLUSTRATION BY TWYLAMAE
The age of social media has allowed the styling profession to grow at a rapid rate. More than ever before, stylists can promote their work on a global platform. It gives them the tools to gain recognition among an international audience at the click of a button. It also means the market has become saturated with ‘stylists’ – a buzzword for fashion enthusiasts, many of whom are not professionals with the appropriate skills. Much like the age of smartphones and Facebook-created citizen journalism, Instagram has created citizen stylists. So where does that leave the professionals? Lauren Di Bartolo is the founder and director of Australian Style Institute, and has helped produce some of Australia’s most reputable stylists over the last seven years. We sought Lauren’s help for a definitive breakdown of what it takes to be a stylist in the digital age. UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BLOGGING AND STYLING
Don’t get us wrong, the two aren’t mutually exclusive by any means. While blogging does involve styling a concept or visual story, there are a few key takeaways that set the two titles apart. “A stylist has a set of skills that allows them to understand and interpret a brief, develop concepts, establish relationships to source garments and product, collaborate with commercial and creative partners and know their role on a project to elevate a product,” explains Lauren. “A blogger creates content, which often includes curated imagery to convey a story or post. They will often document what’s relevant or trending, but a stylist should be able to push boundaries.” COMPETING WITH CREATIVE CAREER TITLES
Scroll through Instagram and you'll find an abundance of inventive job titles: Blogger, influencer, content creator, creative producer. The influx of creative career titles has meant anyone can claim they’re a stylist, but it takes a lot more than a nice Instagram feed to work as a professional.
22
“It’s so important to develop a strong skill set alongside your brand, because a brand without certainty of its skills and a deep understanding of craft could face struggles maintaining relevancy,” says Lauren. “Success shouldn’t be determined by how many followers you have but by how well you can execute the job.” PRODUCING CONTENT FASTER THAN EVER
While social media has done great things for styling, it also means visual campaigns have a much shorter expiration date. The constant stream of content on our feeds means as a consumer, our expectations have never been so high. “As stylists, we need to move faster than ever, ensuring we’re constantly finding product that hasn’t already been worn or shot by the time we get it,” says Lauren. “It’s also about understanding the desires of the demographic we’re shooting a product for. Consumers are more fashioneducated than ever, so we need to ensure we’re appealing to them with a concept they haven’t seen before.”
“I hear from photographers every week about how frustrated they are that a stylist turned up to a shoot without a proper styling kit, or the right product selection. In personal styling, it’s not enough to love fashion or be good with people. When we work with a client, we’re working with their identity and their confidence and it takes an in-depth understanding of human behaviour to be successful. This is something we have a significant focus on at Australian Style Institute and something we’re known for globally.” HAVING THE RIGHT PEOPLE SKILLS
Along with an understanding of the client, a number of qualities will determine a successful stylist from a not-so-good one. Self-motivation, emotional intelligence, care for clients and garments, and the ability to collaborate are just some of the essential qualities required to make it big. “You need to understand people’s relationship with purchasing, human resistance, instilling confidence, as well as marketing and business strategies, digital trends and industry demands,” says Lauren.
KNOWING THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION
It takes more than a good eye to lead a successful career as a stylist. Whether you’re working with a team of professionals or a client, it’s very easy to spot someone who doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Lauren explains:
If you think you’ve got what it takes to become a stylist, enrolment at Australian Style Institute is open now. AUSTRALIANSTYLEINSTITUTE.COM.AU

Come Clean When it comes to your bathroom cabinet, no product is holier than dry shampoo. Having saved many a bad hair day, it’s the biggest morning timesaver of all. Unfortunately, not all dry shampoos are created equal. So to help you weed out the good from the bad, we put ’em to the test.
Ouai Dry Shampoo Foam FROM THEOUAI.COM PRICE $43
While the foam was fun to dispense, that’s where the praise ends. I wanted to like this product, but it made no difference in the cleanliness of my hair. RATING 1/5
Kevin Murphy Fresh Hair Dry Cleaning Spray FROM KEVINMURPHY.COM.AU OR CALL OZDARE ON 1800 104 204 PRICE $38.95
The fact that this spray leaves no white residue at all had me won over instantly. A little bit also goes a long way, so even though the price point is on the higher end, it really lasts. RATING 4.5/5
MATRIX Style Link Playback Dry Shampoo FROM ADOREBEAUTY.COM.AU PRICE $25.95
This product is lightweight, adds workable texture and leaves basically no reside. The fragrance is slightly sweet, but not unpleasantly so. RATING 4.5/5
ELEVEN Australia Give Me Clean Hair Dry Shampoo
FROM EVOHAIR.COM PRICE $35.95
FROM ADOREBEAUTY.COM.AU PRICE $34.95
For the affordable price point, this dry shampoo did a spot on job of removing oil and odour. It also restored my hair’s volume and I managed to extend my wash by another two days. No complaints here.
Described as a ‘two-in-one dry shampoo and styling powder’, this product returned some body to my hair and made it feel relatively fresh again. If you’re looking to absorb oil on your scalp, it may not help much. But, if you’re hair is just looking a little limp, it’ll do the trick.
I was quite doubtful about the whole ‘two day extender’ promise, but to my surprise my hair still felt relatively clean 24 hours after use. There was next to no white colour in this product either, which is a huge bonus. The scent was baby powder-esque and in no way overpowering or sickly, as some dry shampoo can be.

Kevin Murphy Achieving hair that looks napped-in, but not slept on, is a skill that takes years to master. Kevin Murphy has made this look a whole lot easier with the release of his latest product, Bedroom Hair. The light hairspray adds shine and hold, while also maintaining texture and separation for a lived-in look. Its key difference is it allows hair to remain moveable while still holding it firmly in place. Bedroom Hair contains camellia leaf extract to give hair greater elasticity, as well as sunflower seed extract to provide protection and strength. It’s sulphate and paraben-free, and available now. Triumph & Disaster Triumph & Disaster has raised the bar again, adding a toning tonic to its lineup. Aptly named Logic, the tonic features all natural cleansing and toning agents. Witch hazel and Tasmanian pepper balance and regulate skin tone, tightening pores, while also working topically to protect against acne. Manuka extract further smooths and treats the skin, leaving an even, toned complexion. The new release is unisex, making it an excellent present for anyone in your life. TRIUMPHANDDISASTER.COM.AU
After Tan Co Bisous Makeup wipes have long been hailed as the greatest cosmetic removal tool – despite the fact they’re pretty terrible for the environment. Melbourne brand Bisous is attempting to change our habits, with its specially knitted nanofibre makeup removal cloths. Working with just water, the cloth breaks the surface tension of the oils that bond makeup and dirt to skin – sans endless scrubbing. If we hadn’t tried one ourselves, we’d definitely say it wasn’t possible. You get three handy cloths per pack, which are machine washable and can be used over and over again.

Nothing ruins your luxurious, silky sheets like the stain of fake tan. Thankfully, After Tan Co has launched a range of products to solve your post-tan dilemmas. Our favourites from the collection are the bamboo bedding sheet and pillow protector. Each product uses light and breathable antibacterial technology, with temperature regulation to help stop your newly-applied tan from sweating off. As well as bedding, After Tan Co’s current range also includes a bamboo maxi, so you can bronze up stain-free.

Plant Society
Made to Last
Paris Through a Fashion Eye
JASON CHONGUE
VANESSA MURRAY
MEGAN HESS
Plant Society is the ultimate beginner’s guide to not killing your plants. Penned by plant cultivator and stylist Jason Chongue, it covers off everything you need to know to hone your green thumb and turn your home into an urban oasis. The book gently guides you through the basics such as choosing the right plants for your space, repotting, propagation and pest control. With profiles of 25 ideal indoor plants – ranked from easiest to maintain to the most labour-intensive and temperamental (beware the fiddle-leaf fig) – it’s the perfect manual if you’re not sure where to start. You’ll also find styling advice and suggestions on what pots and planters to pair with what plant. If you’re a novice who’s never kept a plant alive, this book will show you that with a few handy hints, it’s actually not that difficult.
Paris Though a Fashion Eye delivers exactly what it promises: a guided tour of Paris from a fashion insider’s perspective. Compiled by author and acclaimed illustrator Megan Hess, the book takes readers on a personal journey of the most stylish places to eat, see, stay and shop in the City of Lights. And of course, it’s all accompanied by Megan’s signature illustrations. Working regularly with French design houses such as Cartier, Dior, Louis Vuitton and Chanel, Megan travels to Paris at least a few times a year. So it’s safe to say she knows Paris inside out. If it’s fashion, peoplewatching and art that’s on your itinerary, save yourself the pain of trawling the internet for inspo and pick up this lil’ gem. I wish I had this book as my bible the last time I visited Paris.

As You Were
ST VINCENT
THE HORRORS
LIAM GALLAGHER
Annie Clark is an elusive musician who uses archetypes and characters to render her creative concepts with clear vision. This time around however, things get a little more personal. The process of educing her life and loves from a lifetime’s worth of text messages and voice memos has resulted in a light lyrical touch on serious matters like sex, power and death. Musically, it’s pure St Vincent – jerky and guitar heavy, and favouring layered synth that builds to an exultant crescendo. The songs come down again, breathing heavily with the weight of the happy effort. If only revisiting all of our histories resulted in something so beautiful.

You may have heard your parents lament that in their day, things were made to last. And they were right. If the disposable nature of today’s world is getting you down, a flick through Made to Last may be enough to lift your spirits. The curated hardcover profiles artisans who make quality, heirloom products that are crafted to stand the test of time. From leather backpacks to skateboards and bamboo bikes, Made to Last showcases some pretty unique creations. Included from each maker are DIY projects including how to make your own signature beard oil, hem trouser legs and make reusable food wraps. There are also tips on caring for your belongings so you can ensure their longevity rather than just buying new ones. It’s an ideal coffee table companion or gift for those wanting to bid farewell to throwaway culture.
Having recently toured with Depeche Mode, the opening strains of the Horror’s fifth album looms large with borrowed inspiration from the ’80s new wave pioneers. V is an interesting exploration for The Horrors, one which traverses the worlds of post punk, psych, grunge, some weird vibes and the kitchen sink. Most of the commentary around V, however, hasn’t been about the fact it’s actually a really good album – it’s about the lack of substance. At times, the obscure lyrics seem randomly generated by a computer (or an ounce of weed) and, if you’re going to take cues from Depeche Mode, in the end it all has to mean something. Something we can feel. Otherwise, well… it’s just a pretty hologram.
If, like me, you’ve been lamenting the state of rock these days, I’ve got great news for you: Oasis is back. Or perhaps the half that matters: that voice. Liam Gallagher’s first debut album is not really a debut – it’s basically just another Oasis album, updated for 2017. But it’s Oasis done Liam’s way and thankfully, he didn’t come here to reinvent the wheel. Opening with the well-received single ‘Wall Of Glass’, As You Were does everything it says on the box: simple, soulful Brit rock that shows up Coldplay’s latest and makes everything Muse has ever done appear an empty shell of mediocrity. Solid, enjoyable, and with a few subtle digs at his brother. What more could you want?
