From the Team It seems we’ve reached that point in the year where we scratch our heads and wonder where time has gone. The holidays are almost in sight, we’ve actually considered pulling out the Chrissie decorations and have also realised that our summer outfit options are seriously lacking. With that in mind, this month we rounded up some summer-ready accessories (page 12), as well as our favourite stocking stuffers (page 10). Because it’s never too early to start thinking about Christmas gift buying. You’ll find a chat with the founders of Aliceisback on page 20. The new online platform

The Fold The Fold is solving a problem that’s existed for too long: swimwear that doesn’t fit women with larger busts. The newly-launched label has created fit and design-focused bikinis and one-pieces for women with D+ cup sizes. Placing an emphasis on small backs and large busts, The Fold uses lingerie sizing and construction techniques to form the basis of every design. Its pieces are made from recycled Italian fabrics with unrivalled shape retention, while also being chlorine, UV, sunscreen and oil resistant. The Fold is launching later this month and will be available exclusively online.

Ksubi has delivered its latest collection and it’s an exhibition of inhibitions. Titled Carefully not Caring, the release showcases vintage washes, raw hems and tarnished denim. You’ll also find graphic tees set to a palette of red and mustard. Ksubi’s bestselling denim wrap skirt has been brought back too, this season in a mid-length style. You can shop the range now at Ksubi’s Sydney flagship, General Pants Co. and online. KSUBI.COM

And to top it all off, the brand is now available in selected Jack London stores and David Jones concessions. AUTONOMYCLOTHING.COM

Avenue the Label Designed in Bondi Beach, Avenue the Label creates luxury caps for women. The label was inspired by the lack of versatile and fashionable women’s hats available on the market. Still in its infancy, Avenue the Label has already done an exceptional job of filling this gap. Offering nearly 20 cap styles as well as tote bags, the brand has been picked up by some of Australia’s leading retailers. Expect linen caps with adjustable bow details, plus denim and suede textures.

Kowtow Kowtow and Melbourne artist Caroline Walls have teamed up to design a limited-edition collection of T-shirts to inspire confidence and empowerment in women. The brand has followed up its recently released summer collection, Going Places, with a capsule of party-ready pieces. Aptly titled the Cocktail Collection, it updates a selection of styles from Going Places with a muted colour palette. Floating silhouettes are elevated with ruffles and asymmetrical cuts, resulting in a release that’s both comfortable and elegant. Perfect for those balmy nights out. HOLIDAYDESIGN.COM.AU

Booker & Co Booker & Co has just released its summer range and it’s in keeping with the brand’s slow fashion philosophy. The aim is to create shoes that endure a lifetime, delivering conceptual silhouettes made from high-quality materials. The SS17 offering, Objectification, was inspired by the need to reclaim the idea that shoes are complicit in the sexual objectification of women. It introduces an abstract sneaker silhouette that reworks a popular existing style. The Xpress shoe (pictured) is handcrafted from leather, and features an EVA flatform sole for added height. It comes in three distinct colourways and is available now. BOOKERANDCO.COM.AU

MUSIC

Come Undone WORDS BY BIANCA O’NEILL

Kelela may be a musician, but she is also a philosopher. Read any interview with this elusive and intelligent artist and you’ll know why I was eager (and cautiously curious) to chat to her about the brilliant new album, Take Me Apart.

This is a woman who has philosophised about relationships with Pitchfork, and tackled racism and oppression with Fader. A woman who has courted platitudes from Solange Knowles for her music and told Complex about her plans to infiltrate the mainstream with something a little more subversive. I was intimidated, to say the least. However, Kelela was open, warm and eager to share her perspectives on how she hopes to change the world, and music, from within.

You seem to explore a few different genres on this album. How have your inspirations impacted your decision to move beyond the traditional RnB or electronic genres? I think I just always wanted to make music that is reflective of the things I like… I try to find the place that is really intersectional – the place inbetween is what I always wanted to articulate. It’s more about wanting to create a home for me and my peers… trying to be inside something, not outside something.

Take Me Apart is an emotional ride. Was it your intention to deconstruct yourself in order to create the record? Intentions are quite abstract and open-ended. I just wanted to create something that was equally gratifying and challenging at the same time. Hoping it would resonate with people, and also make them think. That’s the only thing I really had in my head before[hand]. Because I’m writing to heal, and to feel better, a byproduct of that is having a record of tracks where I’m unloading a lot.

You’ve toured with The XX before, and you’re about to go on tour with them again. Tell us about that relationship. Well, I worked with Romy [Madley Croft] on the record – and that was the first time I’d ever intersected with The XX. It was through her. She writes from poetry, and I write from melody and it’s the perfect pairing in terms of complementary parts. In terms of an experience, it’s all so easy.

Did you find that process uncomfortable at all? Because my craft is so collaborative, and I have to be sharing daily, it makes [the process] not so weird. Or painful. Quickly, you get over it, because it’s way more gratifying to get over it than to be uncomfortable.

14

So you’re headed to Australia. What are you keen to see more of over here? The first time I came, I did a couple of festivals and one headline show. I’m excited to be more deliberate about working with more people of colour, as much as possible. There are definitely ways that we can be more mindful as artists – that respects the context that we’re coming to.

Everywhere I go, the darker you are, the more you’re suffering. I can’t stand to go to a place where I see people of colour struggling, and then perform to a room full of white people. I’m going to do all the things that I can do… so that people of colour can connect with it, if they want to. Have you ever considered collaborating with Indigenous Australians? They have such an incredibly rich musical culture that is really unique. Yes, I have. I’m kind of figuring that out right now, designing that for myself, so that I have an idea of how I can do that… It’s [about] perspective. So the way that I’m coming through isn’t just about music, it’s about life. I have one question left – and I wanted to ask you this. If your album is about taking yourself apart, deconstructing your experience, has the process of making the album helped you heal? Yeah. The process of writing every song helps me heal – and every day is a different type of healing. Sharing it live is another feeling. It’s a lot of healing. It’s a lot of feels. That’s why I’m writing, and it’s also why I’m being creative in the world, you know?

Take Me Apart is out now via Inertia Music. KELELA.CO

INTERVIEW

A New Home When you’re a label starting out, times can be tough. It’s not easy promoting yourself in a saturated market, reaching the right consumer and building a client base. But that’s where Aliceisback steps in. It's an e-commerce site that only deals with independent designers. The aim is to provide an easily-accessible platform for customers to find and support smaller labels. To get a better idea of just how Aliceisback is helping emerging designers, we had a chat with founder Monica Lim and head of marketing Holly Chandra-Curry. Tell us a little about the Aliceisback concept. ML: Aliceisback is an e-commerce platform, which pulls together independent designers so we can attract a bigger customer base and really do some strong marketing. There are plenty of customers who want to buy and support independent design, but these labels are often not easily accessible, particularly if they are still quite new and unknown. Aliceisback is trying to connect these designers to customers globally. What is your background in the fashion industry? ML: Holly studied fashion design, I studied arts/ law. I was doing tax consulting and then took maternity leave when my kids were born. That was the impetus for me to quit and go into retail. I met Holly while running a few retail businesses. And then we started a womenswear label called Fame Agenda, which we still run today. It was the challenges faced by Fame Agenda which really convinced us that we need a platform like Aliceisback. There are other online marketplaces, but they didn’t feel right to us – either because they had so many big label mass brands, or were at the wrong end of the market. Why is it so important to support independent designers? ML: At some stage, if we stop supporting the creative process, we'll run out of all the amazing things that make life interesting and unique. It will be impossible for the creators to have a sustainable practice. Fashion used to have this cycle where designers could invest in creating new trends, and then have a period to sell those trends to the fashion-forwards, then to the fashionables, before they went out of fashion. That cycle has been completely compressed by fast fashion, so it’s increasingly hard for independent designers

20

to stay viable. The fewer independent labels there are, the poorer our society will be. What labels are you stocking? HC: We represent independent womenswear, menswear, accessories and jewellery labels. Some of them are Arc & Bow, Articulers, Bare Bones, Correy & Lyon, Deon Dane, Dog&Boy, DS London, Edward Kwan, Elle Louise, Established Eyewear, Fame Agenda, Half Measures, Heiner Radau, Jin Ah Jo, Keegan, Khòlò, McIntyre Australia, Myrrh, RBCCA KSTR, The Only, X Nihilo and our madeto-order labels such as Autark, Kalaurie, Lauren Trojkovic, Mankhaseo and Mundame. We’re also planning to do a lifestyle section in the near future and artist collaborations. ML: The beauty about online is that we don’t need to ‘stock’ labels in the traditional sense. The labels keep their own stock and send out orders to the customers directly. That way, they don’t need a huge amount of inventory and can do preorders and made-to-order. What do you look for when sourcing brands? HC: We love stories. A brand that tells its story through beautiful designs usually grabs our eyes immediately. Quality is also important to us, because good design has to be supported by excellent quality.

How can labels get on board? ML: Labels can register through our website or email us at info@aliceisback.com. When are you launching? ML: We are doing a soft launch now, and will launch officially around February/March next year. We will also be pushing into overseas markets in 2018, so that we keep growing that global customer base – very important for Australian designers! What do you think will be the key fashion and accessory trends for 2018? HC: In 2018, I think there will be lots of colour! We can sense a comeback of the ’60s and maybe some dark denims for autumn too. For accessories, I think earrings are still going to be the hero pieces.

Inji

byHélo

Inji is a new streetwear label that’s designed for the Australian summer. The brand draws inspiration from a coastal lifestyle, taking note of current cultural trends and producing clothes for the climate. It does this by making garments with the best possible materials, with fit and fabrication top of mind. Alongside its offering of tees, singlets and tanks, Inji also produces a denim range designed and made exclusively in Australia. The brand’s first collection of men’s and women’s clothing has just launched online, which is perfect timing just before summer hits.

If you like your jewellery bold, but with clean and minimal lines, it’s time you became acquainted with byHélo. Local designer and maker Heloise Fitzpatrick draws upon her background in architecture and art to inform each piece. The result is a range of directional and design-driven sterling silver and bronze jewellery. Choose from geometric and sculptural rings, earrings and necklaces. Rings come in standard sizes, but if you require something bigger or smaller, Heloise will customise your order (at no extra cost). All pieces from the collection are made personally by Heloise, and designed to last a lifetime.

Sea Yøu Swim Brytany Melville and Caitlin Mymryk know there are a few key considerations that go into purchasing new swimwear. And so, when they decided to create their own, the cut, colour and versatility of each design was front of mind. Sea Yøu Swim merges Canadian design with Italian fabric and Balinese construction. Each piece is handmade with eco-friendly fabric made from post-consumer materials. The childhood friends have spent the better part of two years working alongside seamstresses in Bali, to ensure each piece maintains the highest level of quality and detail. To Market, to Market WORDS BY ALYCE COWELL ILLUSTRATION BY TWYLAMAE

For morning people, the local Sunday market is a wondrous land filled with hot jam doughnuts, secondhand treasures and more cavoodles than you could possibly pat in one morning. But for stallholders, it’s D-Day. You’ve spent weeks cleaning out your wardrobe, prepping your wares and practising your sales pitch. Take a deep breath, get yourself a bacon and egg roll and scull a triple shot coffee. It’s time to sell the shit out of your stuff. Here’s what you need to know to make bank… or at the very least, cover your stall fee and breakfast. FAIL TO PREPARE, PREPARE TO FAIL

There are two types of stallholders in this world: those who are organised, and those who look like they live at the market, surrounded by everything they’ve ever owned. Having experience in both areas, I can honestly say being the smug, neat and annoying person is by far the most preferable. Start your market journey by thoroughly going through your wardrobe. Then, sort the pile of clothes you no longer want, separating it into mini piles marked ‘bin’, ‘donate’ and ‘market’. Sort the ‘market’ pile again into categories like dresses, jackets and tops – this is getting a headstart on your all-important stall merchandising. If you’ve decided to price your items, now is the time to make those notes or add swing tags. That said, pulling a number from the sky based on someone’s body language cues on the day will give you approximately two hours of extra sleep the night before. Win-win. PRESENTATION IS EVERYTHING

If you’re selling items for an absolute steal and they’re still not going anywhere, it’s time to look to your presentation skillz. Even priced at $5, someone probably isn’t going to buy your white shorts with the suspicious Doritos dust stain. Make sure everything you’re selling has been washed, mended and steamed, if possible. At the market, take it to the next level by displaying your clothes on matching wooden hangers and choose a few key pieces to ‘feature’ at the front of the

24

stall. Then sit back (on the chair you brought with you because you’re smart) and literally watch all of the new money roll in. CHANNEL YOUR INNER RETAIL STAFF MEMBER

Repeat after me: “I am not just another girl trying to sell my entire Sportsgirl collection, years 2007 to present. I am a passionate, successful business owner with a point of difference. I have things to offer.” I can merchandise the shit out of my stall store. You will literally feel like you’re in a High Street boutique. 2. There is no getting naked in the carpark here. I supply a full length mirror and sometimes a changeroom to prove to you I’m not lying when I say something looks better on (even though sometimes it really doesn’t and I’m just hoping for the best). 3. My clothes and accessories are categorised for the ultimate shopping experience. Leather jackets? Over here, on this rack. Complete Falls Festival looks including accessories? Right this way. 4. I do not cram everything onto the racks like a Supré seconds outlet. I start with the best selection of goodies and restock throughout the day so nobody loses their watch in my knitwear section. 1.

EMPLOY CLEVER SALES TACTICS

Sometimes, to get by in life, you just gotta play dirty. There are hundreds of other stalls at this market, all of them selling Alice McCall party dresses and faux furs from Savers. What are you going to do to stand out, make quick sales, and turn around a lot of product? Always have a bargain tub, where everything is marked at $5. Hold regular flash sales throughout the day, offering 50 per cent off for 30-minute blocks. Leverage your Instagram following, showing your favourite pieces the morning of, and offering discounts on your story. Get ahead of your competitors and accept payment via PayPal or other phone apps for people who don’t have any (or enough) cash. Bring a really loud, annoying speakerphone so you can spruik like at the fruit markets. Keep a few extra jam doughnuts aside so you can offer a bribe ‘gift with purchase’ to get hesitant customers over the finish line. And at the end of the day, mark everything at $2, or just beg people to take something so you don’t have to pack it all back up. Time is money, people. Time is money.

Acorn

Love Mae

In the warmer weather, bucket hats and caps will keep your little one protected from the sun, and we know just the right place to get them. Acorn Kids was created in 2010 by Fiona Savaris after an elusive search for the perfect hat for her daughter. The Melbourne-based brand specialises in children’s headwear and accessories made from 100 per cent cotton. Its summer range spans sun hats, bonnets and rompers printed with flamingos, confetti and rainbows. The label has thought about all the finer details too, like reversible options and adjustable toggles.

Adults place a lot of importance on owning nice crockery. Now, Love Mae is extending that sentiment to kid’s dinnerware. Tailored to appeal to the young, and young at heart, Love Mae’s offering is designed to be beautiful, while also protecting little tots from chemicals. Made from bamboo, the dinnerware is 100 per cent biodegradable, BPA and phthalate free. Designs are illustrated with Australian flora and fauna, woodland creatures, dinosaurs and more, meaning there’s something for every kid (and parent’s) taste.

PLAE

Coco and Ginger

After becoming a father, Ryan Ringholz realised there was a gap in the market for kid’s shoes which were tough and flexible. Drawing on his experience designing footwear for the likes of Puma, Diesel and UGG, he set about to change things. His brand, PLAE, provides shoes for little ones that are durable, washable and customisable. The eco-friendly range is made to allow for the natural development of children’s feet, while also providing full support. Each pair is handcrafted by Ryan’s team, with super shock absorption for little athletes, plus toe guards and microbial inserts.

Coco and Ginger is a Bali-based childrenswear label taking inspiration from island life. It began when founder, Saffron Pugh-Blaby, received growing interest for the clothes she had made for her own daughters. This led Saffron to open a studio, where she now employs local seamstresses, tailors and artisans. To produce its collections, Coco and Ginger relies on slow fashion techniques like hand-printing, stitching and embroidery. Expect an offering for babies, kids and tweens that includes ruffled playsuits, ankleskimming maxi skirts and dresses and leotards for layering.

Salt Water Sandals

Peggy

A shoe undergoes a great test of endurance on the foot of a child. Kids are constantly running around, pounding the pavement and stomping in puddles. So naturally, they need a shoe that can keep up with them. Not many people know that Salt Water Sandals has a kid’s offering alongside its adult range. Made from the same durable leather, the Sun-San sandals arrive in a brighter colour palette with the option of cute prints like cherries and florals. The range offers the original Salt Water style, plus variations including slides, thongs and crosshatched designs.

Peggy is a childrenswear label with old-world whimsy and sentimentality at its heart. Named after designer Simone Ryan’s grandmother, the brand merges classic cuts with contemporary details. Think adorable plaid playsuits, denim dresses and pink gingham bonnets – all of which can be mixed and matched. The girl’s offering spans infant pieces up to size 8 and Peggy also stocks a range of kid’s accessories and decor. Think dreamcatchers, cushions and headwear. PEGGY.COM.AU

Since its launch in 2012, the Melbourne-based bedding and homewares brand has been a destination for designs inspired by adventure, celebration and fun. Its most recent Animalia collection delivers a serious dose of nostalgia. In collaboration with the popular book of the same name, the release includes pieces for kids and infants. Everyone’s favourites from the animal kingdom have been printed on bed linen, beanbags, play mats, pyjamas and more, introducing a new generation to Graeme Base’s much-loved title. KIPANDCO.COM.AU

HAIR & BEAUTY

Scrub Club With summer on its way, we’re betting you’ve got a few layers of winter skin you might like to shed. As per usual, we’ve put a few popular brands to the test.

Aēsop Geranium Leaf Body Scrub FROM AESOP.COM PRICE $39 TEXTURE MEDIUM

With a product this good, it’s easy to understand Aēsop’s stellar reputation. The formula is gel-like and while it looks super coarse, the grains break down really quickly for a smooth scrub. The smell is great too. RATING 4.5/5

Blaq Meteor Shower Shimmer Scrub FROM BLAQ.CO PRICE $24.95 TEXTURE FINE

While I like the idea of exfoliating with matter from the cosmos, this scrub should come with a warning, as it’s super potent. If you don’t scrub with soap right afterward, it tends to stain quite easily. However, it did leave my skin feeling silky. RATING 3/5

Byron Bay Tan Superfood Coffee Scrub FROM BYRONBAYTAN.COM PRICE $28.50 TEXTURE COARSE

Of all the body scrubs I’ve used, this was the coarsest, successfully getting rid of my stubborn fake tan. The no-fuss formula is perfect for getting your coffee fix, without the caffeine. RATING 3/5

Skinstitut Glycolic Scrub 14%

Frank Body Shimmer Scrub

FROM FIND STOCKISTS AT SKINSTITUT.COM PRICE $30.15 TEXTURE FINE

FROM FRANKBODY.COM/AU PRICE $19.95 TEXTURE MEDIUM

This creamy scrub is a best on ground, with extremely fine beads that give both a soft exfoliation and gentle cleanse. My skin was (approx) three times softer after use, and didn’t feel dry or over-scrubbed.

Frank Body’s notorious body scrub has been given an update, this time with triple the shimmer. After a shower, I’m iridescent with hints of glitter. But nothing too over the top. My skin also feels supple and super smooth. Thanks to Frank, I’ve finally achieved unicorn status.

RATING 5/5

Clarins Tonic Body Polisher FROM CLARINS.COM.AU| PRICE $48 TEXTURE FINE

This product exfoliates, moisturises and has a pleasant rosemary fragrance. I particularly enjoy its cream/gel texture, as I find loose grain scrubs messy and a bit of a pain to clean off the shower. RATING 4/5

HAIR & BEAUTY

Pureology For locks in need of a little TLC, Pureology has released two Superfood Hair Treatments. The Strength Cure and Hydrate Treatments harness the benefits of goji berry extract, avocado and coconut oil, to maximise colour retention and nourish damaged hair. You can use the products before and after dyeing, allowing your colour-treated hair to retain its fresh-fromthe-salon feel. They’re also 100 per cent vegan, use sustainable ingredients, and are formulated with broad spectrum sunscreens for added protection.

Frank Body

PUREOLOGY.COM.AU

Our friends at Frank Body are back with a new and improved Shimmer Scrub, and they’re promising three times the shine. Added gold and silver particles keep your skin glowing, while sugar and coffee work to exfoliate. Its formula contains grapeseed oil and vitamin E to moisturise and hydrate, also allowing the glow dust to stick to you and not the shower floor. The Shimmer Scrub already has a waitlist of over 90,000 people, so to avoid missing out, sign up to the website for priority access. FRANKBODY.COM/AU

Hourglass Cosmetics We’ve just been given another reason to drop our dollars on Hourglass. The brand has recently announced it’s going vegan, in a bid to further the protection of animal rights. From 2020, the cult beauty brand will cease to use any animal products, or animal byproducts, across its entire range. The change will see Hourglass source alternatives to frequently-used beauty ingredients including beeswax and carmine. Until then, you can shop the brand’s current vegan offering which includes the Veil Mineral Primer, Vanish Foundation Stick and Ambient Lighting Powder.

Your two favourite Kevin Murphy products now come in a set. The I Woke Up Like This pack includes Kevin Murphy’s Angel Wash and Angel Rinse, which are perfect for fragile hair. Both are infused with mango, cocoa butter and green tea extract to strengthen hair that’s too fine or damaged from colour. To top it all off, the pack also comes with a 100mL travel size of Kevin Murphy’s latest finishing spray, Bedroom Hair. KEVINMURPHY.COM.AU

REVIEWS

Look & Listen WITH TARA SMITH AND BIANCA O'NEILL

Sour Heart JENNY ZHANG

Flick through a few pages of Sour Heart and you’ll find a collection of short stories centred around one underlying narrative. Jenny Zhang provides insight into what life was like for Asian immigrants in the 1990s, offering a real yet attimes-disturbing account of their hardships. Each short story revolves around the same community of immigrants, who trade their lives in China and Taiwan for life on the poverty line in New York City. A number of narrators recount their stories, all stemming from the similar voice of a young Asian girl, struggling to relate to the alien community around her. At times, the flow-on sentence structure and constant flipping of interwoven characters can make the storyline hard to follow, but if you keep up, you’ll be rewarded with an insightful yet startling read.

Pacific Daydream

100 Aussie Things We Know and Love

Daphne and Daisy: Pawtraits of Sausage Style

BUNNY BANYAI

RACHEL BURKE

100 Aussie Things We Know and Love puts the Australian way of life under a microscope, and then proceeds to make a mockery of it. The book is a hilarious guide to everything quintessentially Australian: fairy bread, Akubras, and yep, Kath & Kim. It’s a great travel companion if you ever get a bout of homesickness abroad, or just need a refresher on Australian idioms back home. The book is conveniently split up into digestible chapters covering Australian royalty (Shane Warne), on-screen references (Neighbours) and all the stuff from New Zealand we claim as our own (Crowded House). With satirical facts like why magpies attack and who’s to blame for ugg boots, 100 Aussie Things We Know and Love references all the little things that make this nation so great. And they say Australians have no culture.

Conscious GUY SEBASTIAN

WEEZER

Let me preface by saying I’m a huge fan of Weezer(’s old stuff). Unfortunately, although Pacific Daydream channels the band’s California sound in a huge way, it certainly isn’t reminiscent of “beachside reveries from the end of the world,” as suggested in the press release. Nor does it channel the musical offspring of the “Beach Boys and The Clash.” It’s more like the annoying younger brother of Maroon 5 and Good Charlotte – with all the worst Californian rock clichés. And just like the many young women getting their first tattoos down at Venice Beach, Rivers Cuomo found his inspiration in a Chinese proverb… Instead, he probably should have stuck to broken hearts and outsiderdom.

50

Imagine being such a good dog you get to write your own book. Daphne and Daisy is a collection of adorable pawtraits of two very fashionable dachshunds. If Cool Dog Group were to write a book, I’d imagine it would be something like this. The pictorial includes a collection of Daphne and Daisy’s favourite style themes, including flowers, pom poms, shiny things, sunglasses and hats. You know, normal dog stuff. It also features valuable sartorial advice like “floral booties are an investment piece” and “tinsel is transeasonal”, making it the perfect festive stocking stuffer. I won’t lie and pretend this book is the next Moby Dick, but if you’re seeking a perfect example of ultimate sausage style, Daphne and Daisy is right on brief.

The Thrill Of It All SAM SMITH

I can hardly believe this is Guy Sebastian’s 10th studio album. But then, when you think about how long he’s been kicking around (and the fact he was on our FIRST-EVER season of Australian Idol), it’s really no surprise. Prolific as he is, he’s had some hits and some not-so-good. But I’m digging the fairly recent redirection into the funky pop arenas of your Bruno Mars’. Flawless as his voice is – even on an album with ‘one-take’ vocals – his song choices veer into background music territory. Forgive the ‘sex sells’ angle, but Sebastian needs to amp up the sex (something Mars is great at). More falsetto funk à-la ‘High On Me’, and less dreary romanticism à-la ‘Set In Stone’, please.

Opening with the killer number one track ‘Too Good At Goodbyes’, Smith’s sophomore album perfectly showcases his flawless voice. It’s full of the smouldering sadness left over after the embers of a relationship have finally died. ‘One Last Song’ and ‘Baby, You Make Me Crazy’ will be fodder to wannabe singers on The X Factor imminently. And, a turn from upcoming artist YEBBA on ‘No Peace’, has uncovered the kind of star power that won’t be unsigned for long. Another strong album from Smith, delivering on every front for that terribly-named category, ‘adult contemporary’. A glass of red wine, this album and someone you love, and you’re all set.
