From the Team Here we are again at the end of another year. It’s been a busy one and we’ve got 11 issues and a brand new website to show for it. Also inside this issue, we chat to Basenji about his latest single release with Tkay Maidza (page 15), tell you which 2017 trends we’ll be glad to see the back of (page 16) and list labels to watch in 2018 (page 17). Thanks for hanging out with us, we'll see you in the new year.

MUSIC
With Purpose
If you’re yet to hear Basenji’s track ‘Mistakes’ featuring Tkay Maidza, we suggest dropping everything and jumping on it stat. Following the release of ‘Don’t Let Go’ earlier this year, the Sydney-based producer has continued a trend of punchy melodies and absorbing beats. Here’s what he had to say about it. Tell us about the making of ‘Mistakes’. The song for me was always about creating something a little anthemic and uplifting to put in my sets. Tkay decided on the lyrical direction and concept, and it just fitted so perfectly! I wanted the song to be euphoric but also undercut the opulent, loud brass and drums with gentle sounds and pleasant instrumentation. Everything clicked together neatly and Tkay’s powerful vocals really carry the whole track. Why did you two decide to work together? I asked my label to reach out to Tkay because for a long time, I’ve considered her one of the most exciting artists in Australia. I was really happy
when she agreed to work on the track and even more excited by how quickly and naturally it all came together. What’s the reaction been like? I’ve been truly overwhelmed by the response to the song. The industry, my friends and family have all said very kind things, and the global reaction online has been so exciting. Who would you like to collaborate with next? I’m interested in collaborations with so many people. Right now some of my dream artists to work with are Mozart’s Sister, Seiho, Zora Jones, Kelela, Nadus and Quay Dash. Just to name a few.
What are you currently working on? I’m working on new music, art direction, merchandise, my live show and I’m always thinking about touring and exciting new locations I can bring my music to. What’s in store for 2018? I want to release more music and tour it globally – stay tuned for details, I’m so excited! Catch Basenji alongside Haiku Hands, Mallrat and Genesis Owusu for Red Bull Sound Select in Sydney on December 15. Entry is $3 with RSVP or $10 on the door. REDBULLSOUNDSELECT.COM

So Long, Farewell 2017 trends that need to die already.
WORDS BY BIANCA O’NEILL ILLUSTRATION BY TWYLAMAE
It's been a confusing year for fashion. We had a $2000 Ikea bag. We had a denim thong walk down the runway, and a Balenciaga/Crocs collab. Hell, we even had a scandal or two in the form of fake designer goods… But there are seven trends that offended me this year even more than Gorpcore, and I can’t wait for them to die a quick death in the glowing embers of the NYE fireworks. FISHNETS
Probably the year’s most controversial trend, fishnets were seen everywhere. From bloggers’ feeds to street style galleries. The twist? They were layered under ripped jeans, pulled Urkelstyle high over waistbands, and peeked out underneath pants. It was all terrible, and everyone who posted it will regret the pictures imminently. GUCCI
If there was one designer brand that ruled the ’gram this year, it was Gucci. The double Gs were plastered all over T-shirts, bags, belts and shoes, from go to woah. I blame last year’s fur slides for the rise in fame, but I blame basic bishes for the proliferation of logo-mania. Doesn’t anyone remember the old adage ‘the bigger the branding, the tackier the wearer’? It’s time to find a new obsession. LOGO TEES
Onto the second cousin of the double Gs: the logo tee. This one started with a $600 Gucci tee early on in 2017, and continued with a subtle take from Saint Laurent, as well as a not-so-subtle take from Givenchy. Please place your logo tees in the bin before advancing to 2018, along with those hideous YSL-logo-heel pumps. OFF-THE-SHOULDER
2017 was the year of the off-the-shoulder top. And if you really wanted to turn up the micro-trend meter, you also added a ruffle and a flared sleeve. Ugh. I blame this trend on the endless radio airplay of ‘Despacito’. UGLY SNEAKERS
Balenciaga has a lot to answer for this year. From the aforementioned Ikea bag and Crocs collab, to the Bern-lenciaga politico logos, and finally, to the Seinfeld sneaker. They weren’t even the first ones
16
to bring it back. Raf Simons had the jump on the trend, showing it back in 2015 for adidas. It was ugly in the ’90s, it was ugly when Raf did it, and it’s still ugly now that Balenciaga has shoved a $1000 price tag on it. Everyone just stop, pls.
CHOKERS
Kim K had us frothing over chokers this year. Even I succumbed to this ’90s remix. It died as quickly as it took over our lives for a hot second, and I’d like to put it in the ‘no go zone’ for 2018, please. I’ve sobered up and I regret it immensely.
MONOCHROME MINIMALISM
The last few years have seen feeds filled with black and white boringness, but it’s time for a return to real life (and colour). Put down the Snapseed desaturation tool, and embrace the natural environment. Trees aren’t meant to be grey, you guys. This also goes for boring style ‘inspo’ in the form of black skinny jeans and a white tee on a size 6 model. THIS IS NOT STYLE. IT IS ALSO NOT INSPO.
PASTEL HAIR
This was already over in 2016. Can we pump the breaks on mermaid hair, pink hair, unicorn hair et al? Not only is it totally overplayed, and no longer hair inspo in any form, it’s also just really bad for your locks. I’m calling for a return to au naturale next year. It’ll save me time, money and a whole lot of colour anxiety.

On the Rise It’s been a big year for Australian fashion. We’ve seen the arrival of some exciting new talent and with it, a fresh and innovative approach to design. Here’s who caught our attention this year. Our expectations are high for the next. WORDS BY GIULIA BRUGLIERA
E NOLAN
QUEEN OF PENTACLES
Mundame
Alys
E Nolan
The brainchild of emerging designer Elizabeth Hutchinson, Mundame launched last year with a debut collection that had the Fashion Journal team sit up and take note. The label’s second drop features clean designs with a clear direction – think architectural lines, clever lengths and exaggerated collars. Bonus points go to Mundame for garments that are made to order in Melbourne, lessening the label’s (and our own) environmental impact.
First, it was her eponymous line, then it was her work with high street label Seduce. But it’s Magdalena Velevska’s 2017 debut that has our expectations sky high. Alys has already won the affection of many Australian influencers, with a selection of wrap styles tagged across Instagram. More recently, the brand has just launched its website, with a few select pieces available to shop on The Iconic. And if this preview is anything to go by, we’re about to become very familiar with Alys.
When a label launches straight into Melbourne’s iconic retailer Le Louvre, you know to expect big things. E Nolan offers a welcome reprieve from the minimalist styles we continue to receive, instead playing heavily with texture, volume, print and embellishments. Still, it’s far from over the top. The debut range is currently available only at Le Louvre, with a website not yet live. It means the rest of the country will have to wait to get their hands on a piece. Good things come to those who wait, right?

Coreprêt For those who can’t bear the thought of a pencil skirt, meet Coreprêt. The brand’s focus is on conservative design that’s certainly office appropriate, but cool enough to wear beyond a fluorescent-lit room. The label is a collaboration between RMIT graduates Gabrielle Leavesley and Nessie Croft, who are also champions of ethical fashion practice. All garments are therefore designed for longevity and produced using sustainable methods and materials. Coreprêt is only just budding at the moment, but we’re excited to see what’s next.
@ENOLANMELBOURNE
Queen of Pentacles Queen of Pentacles first dropped onto our radar earlier this year, with a line of zodiac jewellery inspired by bad horoscopes. The project of local creative Tabatha Turner, QoP offers a line of 12 minimal necklaces, each spelling out a different star sign and plated in 18k gold. We’ve since seen the label drop a line of zodiac ‘merch’ with the hint of more to come. Watch this space. QUEEN-OF-PENTACLES.COM
The Fold Despite a saturation of minimal swimwear in the market, newcomer The Fold found a way to break through. The Australian label launched in October this year, offering swimwear exclusively for cup sizes D and above. It’s a genius concept. Styles don’t compromise on design either, with cuts serving to flatter large busts while offering enough support. The debut offering is minimal but strong, just like The Fold’s designs. REVIEW
Sweet as Pie WORDS BY JAMES DI FABRIZIO ILLUSTRATION BY TWYLAMAE
Forget about plum pudding. Step aside, panettone. There’s no sweet more quintessentially Christmas and universally loved than the humble mince pie. A great pie will reignite your holiday spirit like nothing else, while a terrible one will leave you feeling like you’ve swallowed fruit-flavoured cardboard. But how do you sort the naughty from the nice? We’ve done the hard yards and sampled a full Christmas stocking’s worth of pies so you don’t have to.
Coles Traditional Fruit Mince Pies Let’s be frank. Coles isn’t going to win any awards for its mince pies. This is the everyman’s mince pie. The tried and tested classic that’s readily available to call upon for any Christmas occasion. Save the boutique mince pies for Christmas day and bust these out for the yearly catch-up with that friend you won’t see again until this time next December. Bonus points: generous filling that’s bursting with sultanas (Coles know a thing or two about value). Points deducted: a disheartening absence of icing sugar. RATING 3.5 UGLY CHRISTMAS SWEATERS OUT OF 5
Woolworths Fruit Mince Pies Woolworths, you’ve done it again. A no-fuss mince tart that’ll appease the masses and bring your family together through one crowdpleasing pie. If that’s not what Christmas is all about, then I don’t know what is. The pastry is firm, and not too crumbly. In fact, it almost tastes a bit like a cross between gingerbread and apple pie. The pie's top is adorned with a nice criss-cross pattern that's festive, but
18
not too fancy. The filling is generous, sweet, and keeps experimentation to a minimum. After all, some things are best kept simple. RATING 4 LONG-WINDED CHATS WITH YOUR COUSIN WHO JUST BOUGHT A TIMESHARE ON THE GOLD COAST OUT OF 5
Grandma Wild’s Luxury Mince Pies Anything made by a grandma is bound to be good, right? Wrong. Grandma Wild’s mince pies are dry as bones. The pastry turns to a Clag-like texture in your mouth. All of the sultanas and dates have been squished into some sort of nondescript, amorphous fruit paste. Serve these up to ruin Christmas, or to your younger cousins who don’t know any better. RATING 1.5 RE-RUNS OF 'LOVE ACTUALLY' OUT OF 5
Puddings on the Ritz’s Classic Mince Tarts “For connoisseurs of fine food,” reads the label on these high-end bad boys. A bold statement indeed.
There’s a general rule of thumb when shopping for mince pies: the fewer that are sold in a packet, the fancier the pie is bound to be. Case in point, there’s only two in this box. The shortcrust pastry crumbles apart when trying to pry it out of the foil. It’s a rough start. But the flavour? Bellissimo. I can hear baby angels cry with joy. An elf just fell off his chair. Someone get Saint Nick on the phone because he needs to try this. RATING 4.5 CHRISTMAS HAMS OUT OF 5
Phillippa’s Mince Pies All hail Phillippa, queen of the mince pie. The shortbread is light, sweet and crispy; the filling tangy and aromatic. There’s a lot more going on in this pie than first meets the eye – but it’s subtle, and not overbearing (read: you can smash a few without feeling sick). Hints of orange rind and a heady mix of spices make this a certified Christmas winner. Capping it off, the handmade stars that adorn the top of the tart are bloody cute. All hail Phillippa. Long may she reign. RATING 4.5 AWKWARD FAMILY LUNCH CONVERSATIONS WITH YOUR CASUALLY RACIST AUNT OUT OF 5

Brooke Da Cruz
THE MNML
One quick look at Brooke Da Cruz’s designs will have you ready to spend your life savings. The Perth-based designer creates visually striking garments which are easy to wear and feel luxurious. Ethical and sustainable values are central to Brooke’s process, with materials consciously selected to minimise harm to the environment. Her debut collection, Untouched One, draws inspiration from people, places, cultures and experiences in her life. It combines organic cotton, ethically-sourced silk and Tencel and has been wear-tested to ensure its aesthetic doesn’t compromise comfort. Preorder the release online now.
THE M|N|ML began as a local alternative to mass-produced clothing. Two sisters launched the label in 2015, after a search for well-made sustainable basics proved fruitless. Since then, the brand has established a range of luxe yet affordable basics, with the majority of pieces created locally. Everything the label makes is made in ethically-certified factories from materials like organic cotton and lyocell. Better yet, five per cent of each sale is donated to community organisations working to provide basic human rights to those less fortunate. And if that hasn’t got you convinced, all styles are currently available for under $100.

The Rushing Hour It’s become easier than ever to fill our wardrobes with slow fashion pieces. The Rushing Hour is another label we’ve added to our collection, thanks to its commitment to innovation and humanity. The label believes in making quality garments that last, with a sustainable and transparent process. Its eclectic collection is elevated with the use of bold silhouettes and contemporary finishes and you can expect laser-cut detailing, leather look materials and French linen throughout. The Rushing Hour also supports the One Girl charity, and for every item sold, it funds one month of education for a girl in Uganda or Sierra Leone. THERUSHINGHOUR.COM

Liar Liar
Sahana Byron Bay
With over 20 years’ of combined experience at Stella McCartney Lingerie, Elle Macpherson Intimates and Pleasure State, it’s safe to say Sophie Hardy and Deborah Morrison know what makes good lingerie. Their label Liar Liar is made for clever women, with the intimates toeing the line between girlishness and sophistication. The brand has made a point to focus on petite frames with its initial collection, designing for smaller girls who struggle to find underwear that fits well. The offering spans sizes 6 to 14, with plans to expand to larger sizes in the near future.
There’s something special about wearing locally handmade clothing. Sahana Bryon Bay understands this sentiment, with all its designs ethically handcrafted in the Byron hinterland. The label takes its inspiration from the natural landscape, encapsulating the relaxed coastal energy of the region. Think clean, minimal designs, coupled with high-quality natural fibres like pure linen. With a focus on slow fashion and timeless silhouettes, designs are both easy-to-wear and sophisticated. The range includes maxi pinafores, oversized kaftan dresses, skirts and more. You can catch Sahana at the Habitat Woman Byron Bay pop-up store or online.

Pant Active
Creux Automatiq
Pant Active is the culmination of two passions: fitness and art. Founded by a Melbourne-based brother and sister duo, the label collaborates with artists to produce prints to splash across Australian-made leggings. Think the kind of art you’d see in the streets and laneways of Melbourne. Each design is commissioned for a very limited run and once sold out, it isn’t used again. The brand’s ethos is to make customers feel like they’re wearing something unique and to respect the integrity of each artist’s work. Golden Palm Design
Betty Basics
A gift without a card is like a Christmas tree without a star – incomplete. This year, finish your gift-giving with a bang by visiting Golden Palm. The online design studio stocks a range of cards, postcards and art prints, all based on hand-drawn illustrations. Themes include flora, fauna and signs of the zodiac, with a focus on retro prints and pops of colour. Each product is designed to be a keepsake you can proudly display on the mantelpiece. While the studio only launched earlier this year, its product line is expanding for 2018. Watch this space.
Our favourite type of Christmas gifts are ones we can put to use all year ’round. You may be unfamiliar with Betty Basics, but we’re guessing you know its sister labels Sass and Fate+Becker. HAIR & BEAUTY
Best of Beauty It’s been a busy year in beauty, with an endless stream of new skincare, makeup and haircare releases. But there were a few products that really stood out from the rest. Here are our favourites. NARS Liquid Blush FROM MECCA.COM.AU PRICE $44
2017 was a big year for NARS, but our favourite release from the brand was the addition of a liquid blush to its cult Orgasm range. Pair it with a powder blush to amp up its pigment, or wear alone for a sheer, dewy flush.
Charlotte Tilbury Unisex Healthy Glow Hydrating Tint FROM CHARLOTTETILBURY.COM/AU PRICE $50
This product grabbed our attention with its claim to be unisex, but stayed in our lives for its ability to deliver the ultimate summer glow.
ELEVEN Australia Dry Powder Volume Paste FROM ELEVENAUSTRALIA.COM PRICE $24.95
Miss Frankie 5 Free Nail Polish FROM MISSFRANKIE.COM.AU PRICE $22
Miss Frankie’s ridiculously lovely packaging caught our attention, but that was just the start. The Australian-made polish boats a formula free of common toxic ingredients often found in other varnishes. When put to the test, Miss Frankie’s pastel shades were quick-drying and leave a super smooth finish.

Mecca Max Press Refresh Blotting Paper FROM MECCA.COM.AU PRICE $10
Hands down, the most useful product we’ve ever had on our person. Not only do the little pink sheets soak up any extra facial oil, they do so without displacing foundation and other makeup products. It’s also just extremely satisfying to hold up to the light and check out each sheet’s effectiveness.
Eleven Australia’s Dry Powder Volume Paste entered our rotation of hair products that we use on the regular. The paste works to lift roots and give your hair that grit and texture that seems to only come the second day after washing.
Stila One Step Prime FROM MECCA.COM.AU PRICE $52
The perfect no-fuss priming product, this goodie joined the ranks of Stila’s cult One Step series earlier in the year. Points scored for a hydrating formula that creates a smooth base, sans oily residue.

Bali Body Bali Body has expanded its offering, with the introduction of its very own Shimmer Oil. Designed to create an instant and natural-looking sheen, the lightweight formula features hints of bronze and gold. Made with coconut, jojoba and grape seed, it promises hydration and a fast-drying finish ideal for a last minute glow-up. Like all Bali Body’s products, this one’s also Australian-made and cruelty-free. AU.BALIBODYCO.COM
JONNY+JUNE Our hair is one of the many things we take for granted. It’s constantly bleached, sizzled and dried, which is why you need superior haircare to look after it. Sydney hair salon JONNY+JUNE recently unveiled its own line of vegan shampoo and conditioner, to keep your hair in the best possible condition. It’s paraben-free, using Australian certified organic extracts to maintain your locks. Expect ingredients like aloe vera, macadamia nuts and argan oil to extend the life of coloured hair, as well as increasing hydration and shine. Plus, there’s the added bonus of its citrus scent, coupled with a hint of rose and patchouli. Shop the duo online for $29.95 each, or at JONNY+JUNE’s new salon at 104 Glenmore Road, Paddington NSW.
Hop & Cotton isn’t your ordinary skincare company. Before launching the brand, founder Ee Ting searched endlessly for products that would not irritate and inflame her sensitive skin. As a cosmetic chemist and molecular biologist, Ting finally decided to take matters into her own hands, and Hop & Cotton was born. Each formulation is made to order, with Hop & Cotton taking time to understand each customer’s needs and personally manufacturing all products. HOPANDCOTTON.COM

Look & Listen WITH VERONICA STANFORD AND BIANCA O'NEILL
Everybody Lies
The Kinfolk Entrepreneur
SETH STEPHENSDAVIDOWITZ
KINFOLK
Upon reading the blurb for this book, I was immediately intrigued. Written by a former Google data scientist, it promises to unveil humanity’s deepest secrets. Stephens-Davidowitz has spent his career analysing the internet’s data, particularly Google searches, to see what can be revealed about ourselves. While the results themselves are fascinating, the book can be a little dry at times, with sections dedicated to an explanation of ‘big data’ and its value. Even so, the release uncovers some important (and some terrifying) truths about ourselves and the world we live in, exposing humankind’s lies around sex, racism and behaviour.
Pidapipó: Gelato Eight Days a Week LISA VALMORBIDA
Kinfolk’s newest release is everything a good coffee table book should be. The hardback explores the stories of more than 40 creative entrepreneurs from around the world, providing insight into how they got their businesses off the ground. Covering the worlds of publishing, architecture, fashion, design and more, it’s broken into chapters covering solo business people, partnerships and creating communities. There’s also a handy section on tips for your own endeavours, covering everything from how to hire properly to managing mistakes. It’s an important inclusion, seeing as this book will have you ready to quit your day job and become a selfmade success story.
Finally It’s Christmas
Everyday is Christmas
HANSON
SIA
The last gelato recipe book I bought was Gelato Messina’s The Recipes. Two year’s later, I’m yet to attempt any of its creations. On first inspection, Pidapipó’s recipes seem a little more achievable. A flick through this thoughtfully put-together books seems promising (so long as you own a gelato maker). First introducing you to the story of Pidapipó, it then moves through the seasons, with recipes that go beyond just gelato. You’ll be able to try your hand at chocolate fondant cake, raspberry Bombe Alaska and panettone bread and butter pudding. And, if all else fails, at least you’ve got nice images to look at.
You Make It Feel Like Christmas GWEN STEFANI
Combining four new Christmas tracks with a bunch of favourites like ‘Jingle Bells’ and ‘Winter Wonderland’, Hanson delivers a follow up to its 1997 festive release, Snowed In. Overall, the album’s got a bit of a rock ‘n’ roll edge to it, which kind of surprised me – I was expecting pop harmonies and a solid Top 40 vibe. Even Mariah Carey’s classic hit gets a rework with rollicking drums and jaunty piano. Overall, it’ll keep everyone happy. The expected favourites are there with a slick new revamp, and a few newbies keep it fresh. And, of course, all are accompanied by those classic Hanson harmonies.
58
Delivering 10 brand new and original Christmas songs, Sia’s version of the festive season is about as upbeat as it gets. Taking her successful formula for hit pop music, she applies charm and fun to her Chrissy music that never seems to cross over into cheesy territory. Well, as much as you can when you’re talking about a jolly red man and mistletoe. ‘Candy Cane Lane’ is a classic in the making, while ‘Puppies Are Forever’ delivers an important message in a cute way. If you’ve heard your mum’s Bublé album one too many times at the yearly function, consider this a family-friendly alternative to those tired carols.
Even on her Christmas album, we unfortunately still have to be subjected to the Gwen Stefani/ Blake Shelton relationship sideshow. Wasn’t it enough that he was erroneously named People’s Man of the Year? The original duet, ‘You Make It Feel Like Christmas’, is a cheesy country Christmas track that kind of ruins the album for me. The rest of which is about as straight up Gwen-singingChristmas-tracks as it gets. She does it well – especially ‘Santa Baby’ – but gains no points for putting an original spin on the classics. Personally, I’d put my money elsewhere this festive season.
