macgraw macgraw has looked to David Bowie as the inspiration for its SS18 collection. Aptly titled Ziggy, it nods to Bowie’s alter ego with preppy, nautical undertones. A sense of drama has been created with oversized puffy sleeves, cropped sparkly pants and hand-knitted collars, with pieces available in a colour palette of navy, green, silver and pale blue. The bold theme is continued with the use of corduroy, English checks, sequins and hand beading throughout. MACGRAW.COM.AU

Swatch
The Kardashian/Jenner klan has teamed up with Calvin Klein once again, fronting the brand’s Fall 2018 campaign for CALVIN KLEIN UNDERWEAR and CALVIN KLEIN JEANS. The release features all five sisters clad in brand new monogrammed logo underwear, inspired by heritage designs. The style is available in the infamous boy short, along with bralettes and bikini bottoms. Shot by Willy Vanderperre, the campaign adds to the brand’s expanding #MyFamily series, which represents the unapologetic bonds of family.
Be That Girl is the latest campaign from Sportsgirl. But it’s more than that – it’s a movement, a mantra and an ongoing ethos celebrating Australian women and encouraging them to feel confident, capable and strong in their identities. The campaign’s first chapter features 12 unique and talented individuals including DJ FlexMami, TV presenter Carissa Walford, Paralympic snowboarder Joany Badenhorst, Indigenous political activist Aretha Brown and transgender model Manahou Mackay. More of this, please.
Swatch is getting arty, joining forces with renowned museums globally to reinterpret iconic artworks. First up, the Swiss brand has partnered with Rijksmuseum, pulling historical masterpieces straight from the walls of the Amsterdam-based gallery and putting them onto its watches. Three distinct designs arrive as part of the Worldhood Fall/Winter 2018 collection and will be available at Swatch, as well as the museum (if you just so happen to be in the area). Keep your eyes out for the next drop in October.

Kowtow’s new collection has us seeing hearts. Inspired by sorbet colours, the sustainable NZ label has filled the SS18 release with pieces that speak to its minimal and feminine aesthetic. Look out for Kowtow’s signature ethical and organic denim in a fresh white colourway, plus oversized shirts in baby pink, A-line skirts and denim dresses. We’ll take one of everything, thanks.

We all know and love Status Anxiety for its small leather goods, but this season the brand is making a bold move into new product categories. PANASHE NATHANIEL MUGAYAPI (OPPOSITE PAGE) @PANASHENATHAN
My personal style is… vibrant and ever-changing. I was born in Zimbabwe but raised in England, so my style consists of the many different places I grew up. I’m heavily influenced by Tyler, The Creator and Odd Future. Working with Converse is… an amazing experience. I’ve had the chance to work with so many creative, talented and fun individuals. It’s allowed me to really stretch myself and add a whole other dimension to my work. For work I… am a retail assistant at Platypus Shoes. I’m studying Business and IT at Swinburne University of Technology. I also juggle some small passion projects. In my spare time I… like to hang with my friends and work on my projects. We make music and work on concepts for photos and clothing. I express myself… through my clothing. How I’m feeling will usually be a big factor in how I dress. I also express myself through music – I love to go home, play the piano and produce some beats on FL Studio. Converse One Stars are… iconic, I grew up wearing OG Chuck Taylors. I loved when the One Star silhouette was re-released – the design is so innovative, fresh and creative. I’m also heavily inspired by Tyler, The Creator so when the Golf Le Fleur line came out, I was extremely excited. OLIVIA ESCUYOS (THIS PAGE) @OLIVIAEXCUSES

This month we’ve teamed up with Converse to celebrate Converse X, a collective of young creatives who are united by their passion for style, art, music and culture. The Converse X crew are always seen repping the iconic One Star silhouette – the sneaker which represents being unapologetic, gritty, unique and not afraid to challenge the status quo. Through the collective, Converse aims to give young people a platform to express their creativity. Since launching in Sydney in late 2017, Converse X members have gained ongoing priority access to unique experiences, masterclasses, music festivals and even overseas trips. The movement’s just launched in Melbourne (and about to go global), so we caught up with four of the members to see what makes them tick.
My personal style is… dependent on my day-to-day mood and my personality. It always changes and I love that it does because it also reflects [the mantra] I try to live by – to constantly evolve and be unapologetic. Working with Converse is… pretty wild. This opportunity came to me from my friend @rinidawg who randomly asked me to come with him to one of Converse’s meetups. From there, it’s been endless opportunities for me and other young creatives like myself to get a chance to share our craft! For work I… am a vocal artist, vocal producer, writer and vocal coach! In my spare time I… spend money on things I don’t need. I express myself… through music. Singing songs or creating music used to be the only way I could fully express my thoughts and emotions when words couldn’t. The reason why I say that is because growing up, I used to be really bad at socialising and making friends. So, singing was a way for people to notice me and start a conversation because of it! Also, my style is a huge way of expressing myself. Music and fashion have always worked hand-in-hand with each other because they both express who you are and what you believe in. The most creative thing I’ve done is… being involved in a writing camp in Miami for Austin Mahone. We were lodged in a big mansion surrounded by palm trees and wrote as many songs as we could in one week. In the next 12 months I hope to… release all this music I’ve got that’s been waiting to be released! In the next five years I’ll be… hopefully number one on the charts and collaborating with some of my fave artists.

JULIETTE LANGOIS (OPPOSITE PAGE) @JEWELTHEALTERNATIVE
My personal style is… very dynamic. I love trying new materials and pieces one usually wouldn’t put together. One day might be space cadet vibes, and the next ’90s or early 2000s inspired. For work I… do loads of shoots for startup brands (styling and modelling), mainly Melbourne-based. I also waitress in a family business where I love contributing to creative ideas and marketing strategies. In my spare time I… sample clothes and create my own pieces. I also love shooting in 35mm for artists at rap or alternative music events. I express myself… through creating. Whether it’s bringing a shoot idea to life or making clothes I’ve designed myself. In the next 12 months I hope to… complete a diploma in Fashion Styling and put out all the clothes I’ve been working on. In the next five years I’ll be… getting my own brand up and running and still styling, modelling and shooting. Converse One Stars are… super comfy and allow me to shoot all day with ease.
JUSTERINI SANDOVAL (THIS PAGE) @RINIDAWG
My personal style is… very easy going and comfortable. I like to wear vintage clothing and match colours. I draw a lot of inspiration from the ‘90s when it comes to my style, but I’m not afraid to try something new every now and then. I love to wear clothes that are slightly bigger and a little loose, it’s more comfortable for me that way. Working with Converse is… amazing! I honestly did not expect to be part of this project, but I’m super glad and grateful that I am. From meeting new faces, hearing new stories and getting new kicks. I love what they’re doing with me and other young people. They’re giving us a place where we can tell the world who we are and what we do. For work I… am currently a salesperson at a retail store, but at the same time I’m an artist. I make music (R&B/soul) and I also do live performances around Melbourne. In my spare time I… like to write, read, produce/ compose, go for runs, hang out with the boys, window shop, play games on my PS4 and watch Netflix. I express myself… through my music. I love to write down what’s on my mind and tell the story through the sounds that I make. The most creative thing I’ve done is… my own project that I put out at the start of last year. I made a selftitled album/mixtape consisting of nine original tracks all produced and recorded at home. My biggest achievement to-date is… probably getting over half a million streams on Spotify. The song ‘For The Last Time’ featuring South Korean producer Snaggle Owky was included on more than six of Spotify’s major playlists. This might not be a big amount for some, but for me, just having over 100k streams is super crazy and I’m very happy that people are actually listening to my songs.

MUSIC
Rolling On WORDS BY NICOLE LA RUFFA
Do your ideas ever clash during the writing process? J: A couple of times, of course, as in any collaborative project. Mainly it was a pretty relaxed creative process. None of us had a clear vision of what we wanted it to sound like, so everyone was pretty flexible. L: It’s so important for people to be able to bring any idea to a rehearsal space, no matter how ridiculous. If you think it’s the moment for a ukulele-sized banjo, pipe up. If you want to test out your fiddle playing in an indie rock number, give it a shot. But be prepared to get shut down and be open to just letting it go and moving on, and not take it personally.
Phantastic Ferniture, a not-so-serious Sydney band, exudes a refreshing ‘don’t overthink it’ attitude. It’s the garagepop project of Julia Jacklin, Elizabeth Hughes and Ryan K Brennan, who first got together back in 2014 at a bar. Their recently-released debut self-titled album is packed with clever plant puns and breezy, rock ‘n’ roll beats. If the group name alone isn’t already inviting, song titles like ‘Fuckin ‘N’ Rollin’ – the first single off the LP – might encourage a few listens. As they gear up to tour Aus in a few weeks, Liz and Julia set aside some time to have a little chat with us. First off, congrats on the debut album! Is it a nice escape to venture from your solo projects and work on something more spontaneous? Julia: Absolutely, it’s been a real joy for us to be able to play to dancing crowds for once. Liz: It’s just nice to be part of a project that isn’t under your own name. It feels like you have less responsibility, less pressure. Other than feel-good jams and plant puns, what can listeners expect from the LP? J: I think it’s a pretty varied album, some nonsensical lyrics and some heavy numbers which might appeal to those put off by our joyful singles. L: Listeners want more than just plant puns? That’s news to me. They’ll get plant puns laced with jangly pop and streaks of psych rock. I reckon some people who don’t like us will after they hear the rest of the record, and hopefully not vice versa, because let’s be honest, if you’ve
embraced the names ‘Phantastic Ferniture’ and ‘Fuckin ‘N’ Rollin’ enough to listen to the album, you’re probably up for anything. In terms of playing instruments, you guys mentioned you wanted “a low level of expertise, because a lot of good music comes from people whose passion exceeds their skill.” How did that idea add to the record? J: I think it makes the record! It is the record. We have skills, of course, but our passions far outweighed them in this whole process and made the band and record what it is. L: I think we’ve all just been trying to keep up with whatever Phan Fern is. That started out as us playing instruments we weren’t totally experts on, and it became us playing shows we didn’t totally feel cut out for. Now, we’re releasing our album in a pretty touch and go kind of way. I didn’t even get an opportunity to listen to the final mixes before they went to mastering. I know that sounds kind of messed up and neglectful but I was holed up recording my debut album in New Zealand at the time, away from the internet, and we had deadlines to meet. I guess we’ve always had this weird thing with deadlines. Like, just book the deadline and hustle and make do with whatever you’ve got once you’re there.
This breezy, ‘don’t overthink it’, attitude seems to be the core of your band. Do you guys try to integrate this in your everyday lives? J: Definitely, this band has helped me to relax in other areas of my life – creative and otherwise. I’ve realised that usually no one is ready for anything, so you might as well just have a go and see what happens. Obviously if you’re a doctor or something, being fully prepared is probably pretty important. L: Yeah, it’s a good reminder for me. I’m a bit of a worrier, a bit of a stress head at times. When I remember that one of the best things I’ve done is make a band out of a furniture store name with a ‘ph’ at the front, I’m reminded that taking life less seriously can be fruitful. For each of you, can you pinpoint what came first – your love of songwriting, or your love of performing? Or do you find the two go hand-in-hand? J: I think performing definitely came first. I didn’t start songwriting until I was in my late teens but I was singing and dancing and irritating my parents for years before that. And now I have a deep and unwavering love of both. L: Um… how far back are we willing to go here? I recall trying to stage a play at primary school assembly that I’d not written by the time the performance came around. I think I just really wanted a way to show off my new tutu. What’s in store for those heading along to your tour this month? J: Lots of dancing, a bit of jumping, and sometimes screaming. They are really fun shows. L: Dancing, puns, great merch, fuckin ‘n’ rollin.

Book Club It finally feels like winter may be on the way out; a nice dose of sunshine now greets me as I eagerly await spring. These good vibes are no reason to neglect my favourite winter pastimes though. There’s nothing better than consuming wine (by the bottle), and cheese (by the wheel), while tucking into a good book. Why not turn these ~blessed activities into a year-round event? Now’s the time to stop dragging your feet and set up the perfect culmination of them all: a book club. WORDS BY HANNAH COLE
At risk of sounding nerdy, book club is genuinely the social calendar event I most look forward to. Sipping a glorious cab merlot while discussing the latest read – good or bad – is a treasured pastime. And, it’s one that’s remarkably easy to start. Follow these steps: unlock iPhone, message a book-loving friend, organise a catch-up and select a read. Done. Whether it be a me, myself and I situation, a few close friends or a mass gathering of strangers, prep the snacks and try these five books.
Everything I Know About Love DOLLY ALDERTON
Avid podcast listeners may already be familiar with the touching storytelling of Dolly Alderton. In her memoir, Dolly explores love through an honest, repulsive, hilarious and devastating lens. Sit beside her on excruciating dates and glean some life lessons. Most of all, this book is about the power of female friendship, celebrating the shoulders we cry on and the rocks we rely on. PERFECT FOR: FANS OF THE ROMCOM (HERE’S A REAL-LIFE VERSION)
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine GAIL HONEYMAN
I am yet to meet a soul who disliked this delightfully innocent tale. Eleanor Oliphant
22
wins over every heart with her bleeding honesty and lack of social tact, as she navigates the strange world we live in. Case in point: “If someone asks how you are, you are meant to say FINE. You are not meant to say that you cried yourself to sleep last night because you hadn’t spoken to another person for two consecutive days. FINE is what you say.” With just the right mix of laughter and tears, this book will start an endless conversation about mental health, trauma, friendship and society. PERFECT FOR: ANYBODY WHO’S EVER QUESTIONED ANYTHING IN THIS WORLD
Sharp Objects GILLIAN FLYNN
Gillian Flynn’s first novel, – now a HBO drama starring Amy Adams and Patricia Clarkson – is one to read before watching. Prepare to be gripped from beginning to end as reporter Camille Preaker investigates the horrific murders of two young girls in her small hometown. Revelations about her family will make your skin crawl, and her own psychological demons will terrify as she tracks down the brutal murderer. PERFECT FOR: LOVERS OF MYSTERY, DRAMA, SUSPENSE AND GONE GIRL
A Little Life HANYA YANAGIHARA
I must preface by saying, this book is not an easy read. In fact, it’s bloody difficult to get through at times. A story about four young men and their ever-changing friendship as they go
through the throes of life, it is just so painstakingly REAL. Following the group through the decades, it gets sad (downright depressing even), but there are also glimmers of joy, hope and success. Just make sure you allow plenty of time for this read; at over 700 pages, it’s intimidating. But it’s all the more navigable when there’s a friend ready to text for immediate discussion/tears. PERFECT FOR: THOSE PREPARED TO EXPERIENCE A ROLLERCOASTER OF EMOTION
Where’d You Go, Bernadette MARIA SEMPLE
To end on a happier note, I bring you this bizarre tale by television writer Maria Semple (who lists Arrested Development and Ellen on her CV). When 15year-old Bee’s agoraphobic mother disappears, she starts compiling all the information she can – invoices, emails, etc – to track her down. Driven by a deep love of her mum, regardless of apparent flaws, the easy read explores family life in all its intricacies. PERFECT FOR: SOMETHING LIGHTER, SOMETHING A LITTLE LEFT-OF-FIELD
There’s plenty more where those came from, thank ya very much. Get ready to embark on your most enlightening social excursion yet.

A green-tinted primer will prep the skin for makeup, then follow with a colour correcting cream. Apply the cream light-handedly to the affected areas using your fingers and gently blend out into the rest of the complexion. ROB RECOMMENDS: SMASHBOX ADJUST PHOTO FINISH PRIMER AND IT COSMETICS BYE BYE REDNESS CORRECTING CREAM
Dark circles and under-eye bags Acne Opt for a concealer that’s dense and demi-matte to cover any major blemishes and provide a long-wear finish without causing more irritation to the problem areas. I favour a technique called pinpoint/spot-concealing, which involves applying your concealer with a firm, pointed brush (like a liquid/gel liner brush). Stipple the product directly onto the blemish, before blurring the edges of the product into the rest of the adjacent skin. Firmly set each blemish by pressing a translucent powder directly onto any concealing work to ensure longevity. ROB RECOMMENDS: NARS SOFT MATTE COMPLETE CONCEALER AND MAKE UP FOR EVER ULTRA HD POWDER
Rosacea To neutralise the redness associated with rosacea, use colour-correcting products to cancel out the

To diminish the bluish/brown undertones of dark circles, first hydrate with a rich eye cream to better aid makeup application on the especially delicate skin. Select either a pink, peach or orange-toned concealer (depending on the depth of your skin), apply sparingly to the darkest hollows under the eyes and buff out with a fluffy eyeshadow brush. Be sure to then blend either your foundation or a flesh-toned concealer over the area to bring everything together. ROB RECOMMENDS: KIEHL’S CREAMY EYE TREATMENT WITH AVOCADO AND IT COSMETICS BYE BYE UNDER EYE
Pigmentation To lessen the signs of pigmentation and/or sun damage, gradually build up the coverage of a liquid concealer in a slightly pink/peach/orangeleaning hue, (again, depending on your own complexion, and not too dissimilar to your actual skin tone). Apply the product with a flat, firm
concealer brush and fade out the edges of the product with warm fingers. ROB RECOMMENDS: MAC COSMETICS PRO LONGWEAR CONCEALER
Scarring (acne or otherwise) To counteract the nuances and depth of colour in scarring, you need to bring out the big guns. Kevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Enhancer is THE undisputed full-coverage concealer. This stuff is so insanely pigmented, you need less than a dot to completely transform an entire face. Apply with a flat, firm concealer brush and stipple the product over and around the edges of the scarring. You may need to utilise a colour corrector first, to offset the undertones of the scar – green/ochre for red marks, yellow/mustard for purplish scars, pink/peach for brightening receding, deep, pitted scars. ROB RECOMMENDS: KEVYN AUCOIN THE SENSUAL SKIN ENHANCER AND MAC COSMETICS STUDIO FINISH SKIN CORRECTOR
Flaky skin Apply a really concentrated balm directly to any patches of flaky skin that regular moisturiser hasn’t fully quenched. Use a rich, creamy concealer to gently press into any flaky/dehydrated patches. Avoid buffing or blending the product with brushes, as this will generally aggravate and lift the dry patches, preventing product from sitting properly. Rather, use the warmth of your fingers to literally melt the product into the skin. ROB RECOMMENDS: NUDESTIX MOISTURE PENCIL AND RMS UN COVER-UP

Truffles are no longer reserved for the dinner plate. Napoleon Perdis has just released its Auto Pilot Black Truffle Primer and Skin Energizer, and it’s every bit as decadent as you’d expect. Ageless Beauty CLEMENCE VON MUEFFLING
Australian Beauty: Inspiration and Advice from the Beauty Set
Pure Skin: Discover the Japanese Ritual of Glowing VICTORIA TSAI
THOM WHILTON AND LISA TEH
A book that claims to be a ‘woman’s definitive beauty guide’ just irks me for some reason. I wanted to hate this book, I really did. On the whole, however, it was way more palatable than I expected. Peppered with anecdotes from three generations of beauty experts (author Clemence von Mueffling’s grandmother and mother were both beauty editors at Vogue Paris), it provides an interesting insight into French culture and some handy beauty tips along the way. The book is divided into Le Visage (face), Le Corps (body) and Les Cheveux (hair), and includes subject matter you wouldn’t necessarily expect from a beauty guide. There’s even half a chapter on how to take care of your feet – from cuticle care to what to do when you have bunions. Let’s just say no topic is left uncovered.
This book caught my attention from the title. Why yes, I would like to discover the Japanese ritual of glowing. Unsure of what that involved, I eagerly read on. Turns out author Victoria Tsai learnt all she knows about beauty and skincare from geisha. She also just happens to be the founder of beauty brand, Tatcha. You’re in good hands here. From uncovering the geisha ritual to creating and enhancing your own beauty routine, Pure Skin takes you on a comprehensive skincare journey. You’ll read about Japanese traditions, learn how to accurately identify your skin type and work out what products are best for you. The book also does a great job of demystifying sheet masks, highlights the difference between the East and West’s approach to beauty and explores the Japanese diet for clear skin.

TROYE SIVAN
TRAVIS SCOTT
Anna Calvi has always somewhat escaped definition. Her music is operatic, dramatic, dark and yet also completely listenable, rooted in more familiar pop/rock origins. On Hunter, Calvi explores gender – from what it means to be a woman and why, to how we can break that conformity programmed into us from childhood. On ‘Don’t Beat The Girl Out Of My Boy’ her opening do-do-dos betray the seriousness of the subject matter, an investigation into toxic masculinity conditioning that starts in childhood. “I shout out / Let us be us,” she roars into the void – a moment of power that acts as an uplifting statement of gender defiance that runs throughout.

Australian Beauty shares the stories of the most influential players in the local industry. And at this, it does a great job. From beauty entrepreneurs to bloggers and makeup artists, it champions inspiring homegrown success stories and shares their expertise and insights. Between the profiles, you’ll find tips on cleansing, men’s and women’s skincare and statement makeup. These sections, however, were quite basic and left me wanting more. As a book that would seemingly only appeal to true beauty aficionados, it fell short in this area – the tips appeared targeted towards the beauty novice. If you don’t know who Heidi Hamoud, Eleanor Pendleton, Jo Horgan or Rae Morris are – you probably aren’t going to enjoy this book. If these are familiar names and you want to hear more about their beauty philosophies, Australian Beauty will deliver the goods.
An embarrassing amount of fascination has surrounded Sivan’s first single from Bloom, due to its naming as a metaphor for gay sex. I say embarrassing, because most of the skilled and subtle subversiveness of this song was ignored, along with the excellent lyrical talent on show – all for the sake of a few article clicks. For the most part, Sivan seems to have taken the fetishism in his stride, but beyond the clickbaity headlines lies an incredibly strong pop album. ‘My My My!’ is a riot of fun, while ‘The Good Side’ uncovers his heart in a delicate and raw love song that will make you cry. And all this from such a young songwriter.
For all the hype surrounding the release of Astroworld, I had pretty high expectations. Particularly when you add a guest list including Drake, Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, Stevie Wonder, and Pharrell Williams – now that’s a heavy hitting lineup. The danger with this, of course, is being overshadowed on your own album – and unfortunately that does happen here. The best tracks see Drake or Frank taking the lead, and the others simply meld into a trippy background soundscape. Regardless, this is still his best album to date, and the epic 537,000 album sales in the US more than prove that Scott being occasionally overshadowed is still just as sellable as Post Malone on a good day.
