Levi’s Playfully uniting two iconic brands, Levi’s has teamed up with Disney in celebration of Mickey Mouse’s 90th birthday. A collection of tees, sweaters and hoodies have been covered in graphics of Mickey sporting his own blue jeans, which have been pulled from Disney’s archives in Anaheim. And because it wouldn’t be Levi’s without denim, the star of this collection is a pair of light wash 501s covered in an all-over print of Mickey’s face. The range is available in-store and online now. LEVIS.COM.AU

Lover
Drawing inspiration from European adventures, Ryder’s latest collection is an ode to the traveller. Winding Roads merges soft, easy shapes with lightweight cotton and linen, perfect for hot summer afternoons and balmy nights. Arriving in dusky tones of sand, ink and warm amber, the range includes A-line pinafore dresses, statement tees and high-waisted skirts. The result is a collection that transitions seamlessly from day to night.
Sans Beast and Unreal Fur have put their vegan, cruelty-free heads together for a super fluffy bag capsule. Both brands are committed to ethical, sustainable and transparent fashion practices, so this collab makes a lot of sense. Two designs have been unveiled, both inspired by French writer Simone de Beauvoir, as well as the hit picture book Where the Wild Things Are. Expect a faux fur tote bag with a detachable pouch and a small hip bag, arriving in a palette of black, walnut and dark green. Both styles are available online from December 10.
Lover has opened a flagship store in Armadale, giving Melburnians something to get excited about. The brick-and-mortar hotspot stocks the full ready-to-wear collection, which combines the bold and romantic styles of designers Susien Chong and Nic Briand. Think breezy, ultrafeminine dresses hanging alongside classic logo tees and flirty miniskirts. You’ll also find the label’s exclusive bridal line, White Magick, which reimagines iconic designs from past collections in a palette of white and ivory.

New Love WORDS BY MAEVE KERR-CROWLEY
Sydney trio Glades has climbed swiftly to success in the three years since the band was formed. Now, high school friends-turned-bandmates Karina Wykes, Cameron Robertson and Joseph Wenceslao are celebrating the release of their debut album. To Love You features 11 honest and emotional electronic-pop tracks and chronicles the nervous, flirty, frustrating journey of a developing relationship. With a national tour on the horizon, Karina and Cam took some time to chat with us about the new release. How are you guys feeling about the launch of the album? Cam: Very excited, but very nervous at the same time. It only kind of hit us the other week like, this is our debut album, we only get one chance to do it. Karina: It’s kind of crazy, but overall we’re just really, really excited and ready for people to hear what we’ve been working on. Any songs you’re most excited for people to hear? K: This song called ‘Sweetheart’. It’s a little bit different to what we’ve been doing, but it’s got a lot of attitude and I love singing it. So I’m really excited for people to hear that. The album tracks a relationship through all its different phases. Was that based on personal experiences? K: Yeah. I don’t think any of us were expecting it to be like that, but it just turned out to be an album full of songs that really put our hearts out there. I guess that’s why we’re a little bit nervous about it coming out, because it’s really emotional for us. There are some tracks on there that, when I listened to them for the first time completely finished, I got emotional and teary. To Love You introduces some slower songs than what we’re used to from you guys. Was it a different experience writing those tracks? C: It was. Everything that we’ve put out so far has had more of an upbeat, exciting kind of tempo. But the writing process around some of the ballads like ‘Better Love’ and ‘Through to You’ was quite different. We intentionally were like ‘okay, let’s write a slower, more emotional song’. We thought it was a nice way to finish off the album. You guys do most of your writing as a group, right? C: Yeah, and it’s been that way pretty much since the start. But around 2016, right after we released our EP, we started going through a bit of writer’s
16
block. We didn’t really know what we wanted to do, and all the songs we were writing were becoming a bit mundane. We thought we should try and do a writing trip or something in LA, but we were a bit hesitant because we didn’t know how to let other people in on our project. But we ended up doing it, and it was honestly the best thing that we’ve ever done. I think it shaped the album into what it is now, and it opened us up to a whole new world of collaboration. Is there an artist you’d love to collaborate with in the future? K: I have forever been obsessed with The 1975. I don’t know how that would happen, but I would cry if it did. C: We’re big fans of Troye Sivan as well. Right when we started, we actually did a cover of his song ‘Fools’ and he retweeted it. It was one of the biggest fangirl moments for us. What are the best and worst things that happened while you were putting together the album? K: Oh, I can tell you the worst thing. We were
doing a writing trip in LA. We went out for dinner, and when we got back, our rental car had been broken into. The back window was smashed in, and we’d had laptops in the back seat with songs that we’d written on them, which had been stolen. So, that was terrible. We got really down but we actually ended up writing better songs than we’d had before that happened. ‘Neon Buzz’ was written that second week after the laptops had been stolen, and made it on the album. C: But the best thing overall, I think for all of us, was that we definitely had a dream to travel the world and visit new places. The whole album process has allowed us to do that, with tours and our writing trips. We’ve also made heaps of new friends.

Making a Mark WORDS BY MAEVE KERR-CROWLEY
fusion of worldly greatness that we’re giving back out to the rest of the world. What’s the most surreal thing that’s happened to you since kicking off your career? I think that goes to winning a MOBO award. It was my first time at an awards ceremony of that level, and I was actually up for something. I was up for two things in fact and it was just like, wow. A few people on my team knew that I was going to win, but nobody actually gave me any kind of inkling. I was preparing myself and my loser face, you know, to graciously be like ‘oh, well done, well done,’ clap, clap or whatever. But then they said my name and I had to actually go on stage and give a speech for winning best video. What’s your process for coming up with music videos? I mean, a lot of it generally comes from an angle of fun, because a lot of the music I make is just feel-good, upbeat music. Then we delve into it a bit more and ask, ‘how can we empower people with this video?’ We just get together and throw in ideas and pick through them with a fine-tooth comb until we get to the bottom of it. And usually they come out pretty good.
London-born Nadia Rose is as fun as rap gets, with a rebellious attitude and an arsenal of infectious hip hop beats to back her up. Despite only releasing a debut EP in 2017, the artist has made a name for herself with witty lyrics and a unique flavour of funk rap. Her accolades already include various mainstage performances, a Music of Black Origins (MOBO) award and fifth place in BBC’s Sound of 2017 poll. With those achievements under her belt, Nadia Rose is bringing her sound to Aus for Melbourne Music Week. Ahead of her trip Down Under, we spoke to Nadia about confidence, making award-worthy music videos, and the UK music scene. What have you been working on recently? Any new music? Yeah, constantly. Whenever I’m not touring, I’m in the studio and working on my next project. Or, well, next three projects. I’d say I’m working three projects in advance.
18
Which songs do you get the most psyched to perform live? Quite a few of them, really. You know, some people are really good in the studio and they’re a bit worse on stage. But with me, I was always proper good on stage, and I would get a bit nervy when it was time to record anything. So I’ve always made music in a way that, when it’s time to perform, it’s gonna really, really hit. But ‘Skwod’ is really crazy to me. When I wrote it, I didn’t think it would translate live how it does. But anywhere I go in the world, it’s like everybody can relate and get the same feeling I had when I was creating it. So yeah, I’d say ‘Skwod’. Is your Skwod still going strong? Yeah, we’re still going strong. There’s been a few uh… transfers, shall we say (laughs). But a majority of the Skwod is still going strong. What do you think sets UK rap – and music in general – apart from the rest of the world? There are so many diverse cultures, especially in London, and it’s like we have our own little mini world here. So I think by having all those influences so close to one another, it’s like a
You project a lot of confidence through your music and your image. What’s the secret? I think it comes from a point in time where I was suddenly just enjoying being ‘different’. People were always saying that I was different, and I would see that as a bad thing. But then there was this moment where it was like, ‘oh wait, no, I’m different. This is kind of nice. This means that I’m unique and I’m an individual, and I’m not trying to be anybody else’. I think it was in that moment, with that realisation, that I was able to be a lot more confident in my skin and I feel like I could do anything I wanted. I guess that’s just oozing out of me somehow and people can see it, which is good. I really hope others can do that for themselves, too. You mentioned you’ve got a lot in the works. So, what’s the next step for you? I really want to get my EP out because, once it’s out, that means I can get my album out. It’s just always an artist’s dream, their debut album. It’s been a long time coming, so that’s what I’m really looking forward to.

Pearls of Wisdom WORDS BY HANNAH COLE
Grandma can breathe a sigh of relief: our sartorial selection is finally up to scratch. The modest pearl has *leaned into* the era of modern fashion and planted itself firmly as a non-negotiable staple. And now we pay homage, in our 2018 way. Instead of well-rounded pearls, reflecting an image of perfection and homogeneity, today’s pearls are unique. They’re misshapen, lumpy and varied; a bit like us, I suppose. TRUTH TWO: WE’RE GETTING OLDER
No one is more afraid of ageing than me, but I have learnt that some good things do come with age. Like becoming comfortable in your own skin. Like knowing what shapes work on your beautiful body. Like wearing whatever you want because you have bigger fish to fry. The Gucci Effect is making dressing like a nanna – with a more-is-more approach – delectably appealing. And while I dream of becoming an Advanced Style guru, I’ve got a long way to go before the layers and colours call me home. In the meantime, pearls seem the logical first step into this adventure in ageing. We appear a little more put-together (even though we aren’t) but not without a bit of fun. This isn’t just a ‘trend’ – in one day and out the next. So, maybe it’s a movement instead. As we age and look to the past, we’re also changing the way we view fashion. Not only did Nanna wear pearls, but she also had a cleverly limited, 100 per cent purpose-built wardrobe. It’s only fitting that we collectively regroup and naysay the typical trend cycle, ditching hauls and cheap mess in the process. Buy your pearls and keep them forever; pass them down as memory-holders.
IMAGE: RELIQUIA JEWELLERY
I’ve always been drawn to the magic and grace of old family photos – black and white, astute posture, perfectly puffed hair. And the pearls: a refined string highlighting impeccable clavicles, a delicate sphere clipped onto the ear. In many of these, the subject is far younger than I, yet she beams with a timeless beauty and age beyond her years. She seems grown up and elegant, unveiling the true power of the pearl. Suffice to say, as an admirer of the old-timey, I was pleased as punch when these jewels rolled back into fashion. The pearl has been making demure appearances for a few seasons now, popping up on runways the world over. Alessandro Michele is known to drape models in layered pearls as the ultimate ode to our favourite octogenarians. Simone Rocha pairs her ladylike silhouettes with pearled hairpins. And (old) Celine embellished
20
ears with imperfect baroque pearls. In the wise words of Jackie Kennedy: “Pearls are always appropriate.” As with most ‘trends’, the resurgence of the pearl may have some truths to tell about the state of now. (Please never try to convince me that fashion is a solely fickle, external thing). TRUTH ONE: WE’RE OBSESSED WITH NOSTALGIA
One second, we’re dressing like our kid selves again – all bows and overalls and hair clips. The next, we are emulating the women of centuries past. We’ve done away with the restriction of corsets but kept the beauty of their accessorising. These women lived through gendered oppression and fought some hard-won battles for our rights. Without these pearl-rocking ladies who knows where our voting status would stand today?
If you haven’t caught on yet, what are you waiting for? You might have all the time in your precious little life to make a start but don’t let procrastination become your fashion enemy. There are pearls for everyone – from delicate mini keshis to bulbous statement necklaces. The internet is your oyster. But nothing beats frequenting an unknowing op shop and coming across a set of pre-loved pearls. Imagine the places they’ve been, the faces they’ve seen and the powerful woman who wore them before. Maybe through that set of pearls, we will also become a bit more put-together – life imitating fashion, or something like that.

Jagger Sleepwear
Quality sheets are the foundation of a good sleep, and when it comes to comfort, it’s hard to beat linen. Bedtonic crafts all its sheet and doona sets from French flax linen because of the fibre’s many superior qualities. For example, it’s naturally hypoallergenic, sustainably cultivated and selfinsulating, to keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. It’s also twice as strong as cotton, which means your sheets can stand up to years of use. Plus, Bedtonic’s sleep sets and loungewear arrive in dreamy colours like sage, fog grey and dusky rose.
A comfy, ethical pair of pyjamas starts with the right fabric choice, which is why Jagger Sleepwear uses only certified organic materials for its PJs. The label’s range of relaxed sleep shirts, pants and nighties are made from Australian cotton and bamboo, which are dyed locally using low-impact, nonsynthetic dyes. Every product and piece of packaging is made in small batches locally to cut down on the brand’s eco footprint and disrupt the fast fashion cycle. This commitment to the environment has gained Jagger accreditation from Ethical Clothing Australia.

Save Face INTERVIEW BY ALYCE GREER
If you have another few seconds to spare, a liquid illuminator is the quickest and most impactful way to take your look to the next level.
A makeup artist tells us how to make our face last longer than 10 seconds in summer. If you’ve ever tried to apply makeup in summer, you’ll know the pain is real. A pedestal fan six inches from your skin as you apply foundation. A magazine waving furiously across your face, warning the sweat to not even think about it. Getting into your car and feeling all your hard work dripping down towards your knees. Makeup in summer is just not fun, but how do the pros do it? We decided to enlist the help of one of our makeup gods, Rob Povey, to impart his wisdom on long-lasting makeup that stays where it’s told. OK, my cute makeup look for the day is complete, but then I go outside and it disappears. What are the key mistakes I’m making? Honestly, skin prep is so integral to literally any makeup application, as well as making sure that the products you’re using are suitable to your own skin needs. It’s everything you do before starting your makeup that will give you the longevity. What are your best tips for making makeup last in warm weather? First and foremost, try and keep everything as fresh and minimal as you feel comfortable in. Truly, the fewer products you have on your skin, the less there is to slip and slide around – makes sense, right?
26
If you’re struggling to keep your base in place, invest in a primer. They’re usually siliconebased, which has the ability to smooth out skin texture, while creating a silky canvas for makeup to glide right over. Choose a foundation that’s going to work for your skin type – if you’re oil-prone, opt for mattifying finishes that’ll keep excess shine at bay, but if you’re on the drier side, select a more hydrating formula to keep skin looking luminous. For cheeks and lips, stains are another way of getting extra staying power in summer. Powders and creams tend to go cakey and congeal in the humidity, so instead, opt for thin gel formulas that set. If you’re prone to the panda eye, dust a little translucent powder over the lid and under the eye to absorb the excess oils, and be sure to use a lightweight waterproof mascara to withstand wear. I’ve only got five to 10 minutes to do my makeup. What would you recommend I do? Keep it simple! Three immaculately applied products will always look more flattering than ten that have been slapped on in a rush. I would suggest a great concealer that addresses your personal skin concerns; a tinted brow gel that gives great hold and soft definition; a lash curler to open up the eyes; and a multi-purpose lip and cheek tint in a colour neutral to your skin tone.
This whole desk-to-dinner thing… Is it a myth? Can we actually do our makeup in the morning, and have it last right through ’til bedtime? Even the best makeup isn’t magic, so you’ll want to quickly polish up your day look before heading out for the night. Spritz the skin with a hydrating mist to revitalise your base, then take a kabuki brush and buff the product out and work it back into the skin (I like The One Beauty Brush). You may lose a little coverage doing this, but you can go back in with a few dots of your concealer and blend that out to perfect the skin again. Using the same brush, set your T-zone with some translucent powder and a swirl of additional bronzer/blush, if needed. For eyes, if you’ve used a good primer, they really shouldn’t need much attention. If you want to give them a ‘pop’ that takes them from day to night, take a fluffy eye-blending brush and wash a shimmering or smokey complementary colour over the lid – this will also help smooth out any slight wearing to the existing shadow. As for lips, they’ll definitely benefit from a fresh application – especially liquid lipsticks, which are super drying and not conducive to layering up. Take a makeup wipe to remove all remaining colour, then apply a silky lip primer to aid smooth application, followed by your chosen lip colour, for a refreshed pout. What are your holy grail products for long-lasting makeup? And why are they so great? Great primers! For the face, I love Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer, for the eyes, I’d choose the NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base, and for the lips, the MAC Prep + Prime Lip. They are all worthy investments to address longevity issues. Additionally, a setting spray like the iconic Urban Decay All Nighter Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray, will help secure your makeup and prevent fading. As for touch-ups, the Tatcha Aburatorigami Blotting Papers are the gold standard of blotting sheets and a makeup bag essential to remove any unwanted shine. Lastly, the new Rae Morris Invisible Mattifier Powder has been a game changer and kit breakthrough! The colourless product is less translucent powder, and more a pressed silicone gel that completely disappears on every skin tone. Plus, because of the total absence of colour, it can be reapplied repeatedly without building texture like a regular powder would. @ROBPOVEYMUA

Dressy Bessy
Frances Hendrie
Newcastle label Dressy Bessy is all about recreating vintage styles that are as wearable now as they were 30 or 40 years ago. Largely inspired by the ’70s and ’90s, the brand uses classic silhouettes and prints to honour bygone eras. The latest collection is influenced by a nostalgic ’70s summer, complete with barbecues, beach holidays and ice cream vans. Think picnic-style dresses and flowy shorts in a palette of cobalt blue, lavender and bright yellow. This season also sees the introduction of new accessories, including leather bags, straw sun hats and statement jewellery.
Sometimes you just want to be comfy, but that shouldn’t mean you have to sacrifice quality or style. Frances Hendrie believes a good T-shirt is the ultimate wardrobe staple, able to be dressed up or down. Using organic fabrics, sustainable methods and Fair Work factories, the label takes a lessis-more approach that translates to versatile, long-lasting basics. Designs combine the best parts of luxury fashion and Australia’s laidback beach culture, with T-shirts named after surf breaks from around the world. Under new management, the brand is looking to expand and incorporate a home and sleepwear line.

Élocin
Hemp Clothing Australia
As beautiful and luxe as silk is, it can often be too sheer or delicate for everyday wear. Aiming to solve this problem, Élocin founder Nicole Gocs made it her mission to hunt down the perfect silk fabric for the label’s debut collection. Made from a soft but heavyweight silk charmeuse, each slip dress, camisole and zip-up bomber jacket in the range is designed as a versatile wardrobe staple that will last through years of wear. Plus, everything is designed and made in Melbourne, with a focus on sustainable and ethical manufacturing.
Hemp is a bit of a poster child for sustainable fibres, as it requires very little water to farm, is biodegradable and actively regenerates the soil it grows in. Hemp Clothing Australia takes the world’s oldest textile and turns it into modern, versatile clothing pieces that you don’t have to feel guilty wearing. The label uses the most eco-friendly farming practices possible, by avoiding the use of pesticides and herbicides. Included in the men’s collection are T-shirts and button-downs that are designed to be worn through all seasons. New items, including a women’s collection, will be released in 2019.

All Things Golden At the foundation of every good wardrobe is a quality set of staples. Melbourne-based designer Olivia Coleman launched All Things Golden with this sentiment in mind, creating wearable pieces from luxe fabrics and simple cuts. The label’s latest range sold out in the first four days, so it’s clear Olivia has found a gap in the market. At the core of the brand lies its A.T.G Basics line, which acts as the perfect starting point to build your collection. The rest of the offering spans denim, dresses, activewear and knits, which can be mixed, matched and styled with ease. Electing to forgo the traditional seasonal calendar, All Things Golden designs collections for year ’round wear. An A.T.G Swim line is also on the way in the coming months. ALLTHINGSGOLDEN.COM.AU

HANDCRAFTED INTERVIEW
By Hand Get to know some brands making things the old-fashioned way.
The Sew Good Company The Sew Good Company began as a way for mothers in Cambodia to share parenting stories while they made handcrafted toys. Now, it’s grown to an ethical clothing label, helping to support the lives of the women who create each garment. Seamstresses are paid generously and work in a safe, supportive environment with all profits going back into the community. As for the clothes, designs are all about comfortable silhouettes, vibrant prints and size diversity. Each collection includes sizes from 6 to 26, with careful consideration of how pieces will flatter different body types. THESEWGOODCOMPANY.ORG
Aislinn Neave Jewellery from Aislinn Neave isn’t just handmade. It’s handcrafted locally in Melbourne by jeweller, Aislinn, for eccentric souls and those who dance to the beat of their own drum. Aislinn was inspired to start the line by her grandfather, who began work as a diamond setter when he was 15 years old. Now, at 80, he still works with his granddaughter to set a majority of the label’s pieces. Each design is the product of experimenting with shapes and textures inspired by the cosmos. Bespoke pieces are also on offer, allowing clients to work closely with Aislinn to create jewellery that perfectly matches their vision and aesthetic. AISLINNNEAVE.COM

ALIA Jewellery
Hills & West
Handcrafted in Europe but inspired by Sydney’s beaches, ALIA Jewellery’s 18-karat gold designs incorporate the best parts of two very different cultures. Each piece is made from premium materials, using traditional European goldsmithing techniques to produce sturdy yet delicate jewellery. The label’s debut collection, Geometry, features yellow or white gold pendants and white or Australian Argyle pink diamonds. As well as adding some bling, diamonds are said to grant good luck to whoever wears them. Your shopping spree will also help kids in need, as a portion of all ALIA sales are donated to the Australian children’s charity, Variety.
Hills & West knows that an outfit isn’t complete without the right handbag. With a focus on quality, form and functionality, the brand specialises in accessories that can be adapted to suit any lifestyle. Shoppers can be worn three ways, backpacks transform into totes, and features like extra zips allow you to extend your bag for more space. Each style is 100 per cent handmade in Australia, using premium leather and traditional techniques. The latest collection, Lunar, launches in December, featuring a brand new shape in mixand-match colourways. HILLSANDWEST.COM

Ovazania Shopping for jewellery is a chance to have some fun and showcase your personality. That’s why celebration, positivity and joy are all at the heart of Ovazania’s earring and necklace designs. The label’s pieces are handmade in Melbourne, using lightweight acrylic in bold, uplifting colours to nod to the vibrancy of different countries across Africa. Each collection combines old and new cultural influences and the latest, titled Nako, is no different. Melding modern sculpture and architecture with timeless South African motifs, the line features attention-grabbing geometric designs in pops of tangerine, green, lilac and bright yellow. Come Clean Natural beauty alternatives that are good for you and Mother Earth.
Edible Beauty Australia
Frank Body
Your skin deserves the very best, so it’s important to be selective with the products you’re lathering on it. Using ingredients derived only from vitamins, minerals and botanicals, Edible Beauty Australia makes skincare that’s good enough to eat. Literally. The brand lives by the ethos that if you wouldn’t want to put something in your mouth, you won’t find it in any products. As well as a range of wellness supplements and teas, the brand makes cleansers, moisturisers, repair creams and serums. As a bonus, each formula is packaged with violet glass, which blocks light and extends the shelf life of your purchases.
Frank Body is no stranger to the natural beauty scene. Most recently, the brand has swapped its usual coffee grind formula for green tea leaves, arriving in the form of a limited-edition body scrub. Packed with green tea, honey and avocado oil, the new release promises to detoxify, hydrate and buff – leaving you with soft, dewy skin. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Frank Body scrub without the inclusion of a little coffee seed oil, meaning you can still get your caffeine fix. Available now in-store and online at MECCA Maxima and Frank Body. FRANKBODY.COM/AU

Aequora You can find great natural skincare all over the world, but Australian brand Aequora believes in sourcing ingredients from the local environment. Extracts from native botanicals like lilly pilly, Kakadu plums and desert quandongs are incorporated into the brand’s signature line. To preserve the Aussie flora and fauna, Aequora also employs cruelty-free testing methods, and uses recyclable packaging where possible. The all-vegan and Safe Cosmetics Australia-certified range includes body wash and lotion, a facial misting spray, hand cream, and an exfoliating scrub. Each product feature a natural, organic formula designed to work magic on all skin types. AEQUORA.COM.AU
Trilogy When it comes to superhero skincare ingredients, rosehip oil is hard to beat. It’s moisturising, pHbalanced and helps minimise the appearance of scars, stretch marks and deep wrinkles. Trilogy has over 40 products within its range, with one bottle of their award-winning Certified Organic Rosehip Oil selling every 20 seconds globally. The brand’s latest product is the Rosehip Transformation Cleansing Oil. As well as rosehip oil, its formula includes sweet almond, grapeseed and papaya seed oils to cleanse, soften and strengthen skin. When mixed with water, the oil transforms into a milk-like formula that melts away makeup, dirt and impurities. TRILOGYPRODUCTS.COM/AU

HAIR INTERVIEW & BEAUTY
Staying Power Gone are the days of worrying about your lipstick smearing every time you take a bite to eat. Now, it’s all about the matte finish – with lipstick formulas so long-lasting they could put a Nokia 3310 to shame. Here are five liquid formulas we put under the microscope.
Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Lipstick FROM MECCA.COM.AU PRICE $30
While this lippy has a great reputation and I like that the formula is super creamy and not drying in the slightest, it’s not 100 per cent stay-proof. It’ll survive a drink or two, but does tend to move around a little bit once you start eating. So if you’re heading out for dinner, expect to touchup. Points are lost for the brush too, which makes precision application a little tricky. RATING 3.5/5
Bobbi Brown Velvet Matte Luxe Liquid Lip FROM ADOREBEAUTY.COM.AU PRICE $56
This matte liquid lipstick has been created with powder pigments and wild mango butter so that it glides comfortably without drying your lips out. The vivid shades are all very flattering, making this lipstick a stand-out (I tried Blood Orange and have my eye on the more natural Follow Your Rose). It’s definitely a high-end liquid lip, with luxe packaging and long-lasting wear. RATING 5/5
Smashbox Always On Liquid Lipstick FROM MECCA.COM.AU PRICE $35
YSL Tatouage Couture Liquid Matte Lip Stain FROM YSLBEAUTY.COM.AU PRICE $57
If you’re looking for maximum pigment, this lippy delivers. I particularly enjoy that it can be worn as a light stain, or layered for a full matte effect. It lasts all day, but still leaves lips feeling moisturised and soft. While the price point is a little high, the luxe packaging and longevity of the product make it justifiable. RATING 4.5/5

NARS Powermatte Lip Pigment FROM MECCA.COM.AU PRICE $38
As the name suggests, this product has some serious staying power and comes in a massive range of colours. Even with the intense pigment and heavy matte finish, it still feels lightweight. My only qualm would be it leaves my lips a little dry after a day of wear, however a touch of lip balm applied underneath remedies this issue. RATING 4/5
This liquid lipstick should come with a warning – it never comes off! Thanks to the water-resistant formula, I can wear it all night long without colour transferring. The shades are extremely pigmented, and my lips aren’t too dry after hours of wear (however I find it best to top up moisture with dabs of lip balm). Extra points are awarded for the applicator – unlike other brands, it’s shaped like a flat triangle, making it super easy to stay in the lines and reach corners without looking like a clown. RATING 4.5/5

MAARKS The monogramming trend has officially extended to lipstick. Cruelty-free beauty brand MAARKS has launched a range of customisable lipsticks, allowing you to personalise the lid of each product with your initials. Available in five highly pigmented colours, the lipsticks are crafted from a super moisturising formula of shea butter, jojoba, castor seed and coconut oils. Its creamy matte texture allows for longer lasting wear, while also keeping lips smooth and hydrated. The line is available online now for $34, and you can add custom initials for an extra $10. Sportsgirl In its sweetest collection yet, Sportsgirl has partnered with Allen’s. Throughout the collab, you’ll find vibrant packaging and lolly-scented goods across a combination of cult Sportsgirl beauty products and new releases. Sweet tooths can look forward to Allen’s most-loved products in beauty form, including Fantales Glow Cream, Strawberries & Cream Body Scrub and a Sherbies Illuminating Palette. Rounding out the collection is a body mist trio, so you can get around smelling just like an Allen’s Party Mix bag. SPORTSGIRL.COM.AU
Ella Baché This festive season, Ella Baché has collaborated with Australian artist Kerry Armstrong to deliver a limited-edition collection of Skin Solution Gift Boxes. Merging skincare with art, the boxes have been decorated in a unique brushstroke design and filled with a tailored assortment of radiance-boosting skincare products. 3INA has launched its Lips for Life limited-edition lipstick, with all proceeds going towards the World Cancer Research Fund. Challenging the one-size-fitsall definition of beauty, the lipstick changes colour based on the wearer’s pH levels to create a totally unique shade. The aim is to promote positivity and self-expression, giving consumers the confidence to try new things while supporting a great cause. A Girl’s Guide to Personal Hygiene
I Touched a Cat and I Liked It
The Little Book of Big Beauty
TALLULAH POMEROY
ANNA BLANDFORD
BERNADETTE FISERS
After putting a call-out on Facebook, Tallulah Pomeroy was inundated with stories about the slightly unpalatable things women do with (and to) their bodies. A Girl’s Guide to Personal Hygiene is a compilation of these honest anecdotes, paired with somewhat crude but hilarious illustrations. In essence, it’s here to reassure women that there’s no shame in sharing and delighting in each other’s poo and period stories. After all, femininity and being gross don’t need to be mutually exclusive. From flossing teeth with hair to picking and squeezing intimate areas, this guide leaves no topic unexplored. Each chapter delves into a different theme, with the one titled Tasty Snacks my personal favourite. I’ll leave the contents to your imagination. If nothing else, A Girl’s Guide to Personal Hygiene will provide you with reassurance that your festy habits are completely normal.
Rainbow Valley
Apart from having an excellent name, I Touched a Cat and I Liked It has a lot going for it. First up, it’s about the most superior of domestic companions: cats. Secondly, it’s packed full of excellent illustrations – the book is written and illustrated by Able and Game’s Anna Blandford. But take this as a warning – if you’re not a serious cat lover, this book may seem quite pointless and inane. It’s literally 125 pages of cute cat pictures, peppered with feline facts and other random snippets of fun but essentially useless information. Inside its pages, the author breaks down topics such as decoding feline facial expressions, explaining the different types of kitty head bumps (there’s a few) and how to throw a party for your cat. If you’ve ever wondered what your cat is thinking when it looks at you with absolute disdain, this book might hold the answer.
With Christmas just around the corner, The Little Book of Big Beauty could be the perfect gift for the makeup lover in your life. It is, however, by no means a shallow guide to outer beauty. Penned by makeup artist Bernadette Fisers, this title provides holistic tips on how to feel beautiful both inside and out. Broken into three chapters – Inner Beauty, Beautiful Habits and Outer Beauty – it’s packed with helpful pro tips. Learn about the beauty products you think you need (but you actually don’t), habits to adopt for beautiful skin, alternative ways to use the makeup you already own and ways to look after your inner beauty. It’s not often a beauty guide also delves into exploring the essence of non-physical beauty, but The Little Book of Big Beauty manages to do so without being preachy. A good read for teenagers and those starting to dabble in the often superficial world of makeup.

MATT CORBY
If absence really does make the heart grow fonder, Matt Corby knew exactly what he was doing when he disappeared for the last couple of years. Rainbow Valley is an absolute dream – it’s warm and tender and familiar, with every soundscape sprawling and open. After feeling like there was too much going on in his debut, Corby’s aim was to say more with less, and each delicate arrangement succeeds in exactly that. Not afraid to experiment with sound and melody, Corby is more confident and self-assured than ever before. From the Willy Wonka-inspired psychedelic ‘No Ordinary Life’ to the soulful ‘Better’ and the stripped back ‘Miracle Love’, this record is held together by Corby’s warm croon – his vocal range continues to impress and his tone drips like honey. Rainbow Valley is a dreamy, joyous ride, and we’ll happily visit again and again.

Ella Thompson is exquisite on her first body of solo work since 2015. While she hasn’t strayed far from our ears or minds – consistently releasing and touring with GL, Dorsal Fins and The Bamboos – on Hysteria it’s as if we are slowly being reintroduced to Ella Thompson the artist. Every track unfurls a new layer of her songwriting and musicianship, revealing piece by piece who she is when she stands on her own. The gorgeously, floating title track opens the record, and under a reverb-soaked wall of melody Thompson shares her thoughts on gender and emotion. ‘Snow’ continues to float along until ‘Dare’ opens up, injecting some darker tones into the dreamy mix, eventually completely giving way to the bass. ‘Follow I Go’ is a quick breath, before ‘Undine’ builds on these darker moments. Haunting vocals are carried by minimalist production, slowly fading out to a whisper.
We might have had to wait, but finally Sydney electronic pop trio Glades has dropped its debut album To Love You. And it was well worth it. Exploring love in all forms – from loving others to loving yourself – this is a debut record that doesn’t disappoint. At its core, To Love You is unapologetic electro-pop. Upbeat, danceable production carries huge pop sounds from start to finish. Tracks like ‘Nervous Energy’, ‘Not About You’ and ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ capture that perfectly. But it’s tracks like personal album highlight ‘Sweetheart’, vulnerable slow-burner ‘Better Love’ or ‘80 Miles’ – with its electric guitar feel – that showcase Glades’ versatility. At the core of the sound sits Karina Wykes’ brilliant vocals and no matter the style, she holds the record together. To Love You is an absolute joy to listen to, and is sure to find its home in your summer playlists.
