Salt Water Sandals

The Social Outfit

Kirstin Ash has released a new collection just in time for the gifting season, and it’s inspired by travel and nostalgia. Voyage is all about the relics and souvenirs you pick up while on holiday, and the sentimental value they represent. Charms modelled after coins, compasses and other precious trinkets are crafted from sterling silver, vermeil, freshwater pearls and crystals. The label has also added an engraving service to its offering, with selected Voyage designs available for personalisation.

When summer rolls around, it always pays to have a beach-ready pair of shoes on hand. Expanding our choices further, Salt Water Sandals has delved into its archives, re-releasing its Retro silhouette from the ’70s. The 2018 edition comes in both a sandal and slide (pictured), with a woven upper made from genuine leather. Ensuring the ultimate comfort, they promise to mould to your feet with wear (a process that’s sped up in water).

Ethically conscious label The Social Outfit has tapped Aussie designer Bianca Spender for a silky capsule collection. The pair teamed up on two garments earlier this year as part of Fashion Revolution Week. This time around, they’ve created a range of sleeveless silk tops, with prints inspired by birds and the texture of their feathers. Because The Social Outfit is all about cutting down its carbon footprint, the collection is crafted entirely from remnant fabrics from Bianca Spender’s archives.

Song for the Mute

Converse

Song for the Mute and Nothing have teamed up for a second food-inspired collection. But this time, instead of ramen, Vietnamese pho is the star of the show. Volume Two includes quality wardrobe basics like T-shirts, sweatpants and long-sleeved shirts, updated with Nothing’s signature tongue-in-cheek prints. The slogan ‘song pho the mute’ is sketched out in karaoke bar-style neon, while other pieces borrow imagery from Tiger Balm and beer brands.

Trends That Need To Die in 2018 WITH MAEVE KERR-CROWLEY ILLUSTRATION BY TWYLAMAE

Vans Now’s the time to dress as festively as possible, but that doesn’t mean you have to look cheesy. To get you in the mood, Vans has released a holiday collection heavy on satin, metallics and dramatic floral prints. As well as three new brocade colourways of the Classic Slip-On style, you’ll find a pale gold Old Skool in satin and suede. The Sk8-Hi is also available in black with a shiny gold outsole, or red with matte black detailing. VANS.COM.AU

Before we bid adieu to 2018, we’ve collated a list of things that should go along with it.

Tiny, tiny, tiny sunglasses They’re not doing your eyes any good, and they only look good on 0.1% of people (I’m not one of them, so I’m mad).

Overusing the word ‘kween’ And ‘yasss’ and ‘werk’ and all the other words you learnt from Drag Race.

Snapchat filters as Facebook profile pictures Besides the fact that Snapchat filters are evil and are changing the way we all think about our faces, five puppy filter pics in a row is just kind of boring.

Transparent shoes Foggy foot sweat. Terrifying.

Calling your brand size-diverse when it’s not Size 12 isn’t diverse no matter how many buzzwords you throw in there.

Overenthusiastic dog people Dogs are great. Liking dogs being your entire personality is not so great.

Colour Coded Colour Coded is the culmination of two sisters’ life-long love for fashion. Defined by its bold and distinctive use of colour, the label breathes fresh life into the Melbourne fashion scene. Design was always a big part of the duo’s upbringing, with the label inspired by their nana’s colourful scarf collection and vibrant knitted jumpers. Every garment is designed and made locally, using natural fibres and produced exclusively in limited runs. For the brand’s upcoming collection, expect a range of unique prints splashed across breathable and flowy fabrics, meant to keep you cool all summer long. COLOURCODED.COM.AU

Home Truths ILLUSTRATION BY TWYLAMAE

For many, the tampon is a necessity, offering the freedom to do everything we normally would when we’re not menstruating. But for a product so tiny (and so common) there are still a lot of big question marks around its use. Inspired by TOM Organic’s recent campaign about knowing what our tampons are really made of, we decided to look into some of the biggest myths surrounding our little sanitary friends. MYTH #1: YOU DON’T NEED TO WORRY ABOUT WHAT’S IN YOUR TAMPONS, BECAUSE THEY’RE ALL BASICALLY MADE OF THE SAME THING

Many tampons are made with synthetic materials, often not containing any cotton at all. Surprisingly, they’re also not subject to the same labelling laws as products like food because they’re considered a ‘medical device’. Unfortunately, this means brands aren’t legally required to print the ingredients on the packaging of tampons. What most people mightn’t realise, is that your vagina is extremely absorbent, so there is a possibility for chemicals in your tampon to seep into your body. That’s why it’s pretty important to know about the products you’re putting in. MYTH #2: AS LONG AS MY TAMPONS ARE MADE OF COTTON, IT DOESN’T MATTER WHETHER THEY’RE ORGANIC

Cotton tampons without the organic certification have often been produced with the use of chemicals, such as pesticides and bleaches. This means there’s the possibility that a multitude of potentially harmful chemicals may still be in the final product. Opting for organic tampons, like the TOM Organic range, means that not a single chemical is involved in the manufacturing process at all. MYTH #3: YOU NEED TO CHANGE YOUR TAMPON EVERY TIME YOU GO TO THE TOILET

There seems to be a huge debate over whether you should change your tampon each time you go to the toilet. But the short answer is no. As long as you keep the string clean when you’re doing your biz, most medical professionals agree that your risk of vaginal infection isn’t any higher than if you change your tampon each time. MYTH #4: YOU CAN’T WEAR TAMPONS OVERNIGHT

Contrary to what your mum used to tell you, you can in fact wear a tampon overnight. It’s just important to ensure you stick to the guidelines on the packet, and change it at around the eight-hour mark. Pop it in right before you jump into bed, and change it as soon as you wake up.

MYTH #5: ALL TAMPONS ARE BIODEGRADABLE

If your tampons contain any synthetic ingredients at all, they won’t actually break down. Opting for a brand like TOM Organic means your tampons will be made from 100 per cent organic cotton and nothing else, and are completely biodegradable. That said, they should still be disposed of in a sanitary bin for health and safety reasons. MYTH #6: IF MY TAMPONS ARE BIODEGRADABLE, I CAN FLUSH THEM, YEAH?

While biodegradable tampons can break down in landfill, it’s still best to avoid flushing them (unless you have a septic tank or compostable toilet). Not only are you massively increasing the risk of clogging your plumbing when putting them in the toilet, our water treatment plants don’t actually filter out tampons. The risk to our waterways is a big one. In fact, back in 2013, Tasmania’s Tamar River was found to have masses of tampon strings in its bed.

MYTH #7: LEAVING A TAMPON IN FOR MORE THAN EIGHT HOURS WILL CAUSE TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME (TSS)

While TSS can be related to tampon use, it’s not actually caused by them. The illness stems from the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, which can be found on your skin (and occasionally in your vagina). Most people produce antibodies to the toxin but, in very rare cases, some don’t. This is when the risk of TSS increases. Even though there’s only been 25 reported cases of TSS in Australia since 1981, it’s still recommended you switch out your tampon three to six times per day to be safe. MYTH #8: TAMPONS HAVE AN EXPIRY DATE

Always check the box, but tampons like TOM Organic’s do not have an expiry date. You’ll just need to ensure you store them correctly in a cool, dry place to maintain their integrity. That means the emergency one that’s been rolling around in your bag for the last year might not be the best way to go.

MUSIC

Finding Solace WORDS BY TARA SMITH

It’s been seven years since the release of RÜFÜS DU SOL’s debut EP. Back then, the formidable trio – known simply as RÜFÜS – quickly found a home among Australia’s dance scene, with releases like ‘Take Me’ and ‘Desert Night’ hitting Apple Music’s Indie Top Ten chart. We had a nice big pool area and next to the pool, there was this studio. It was just decked out. It was really good, but it was a little bit lifeless at the start. That’s where the shaman came in. We were having drinks at our house and he had a compass in his pocket, and a notepad and pen, and he’s taking notes as to how to try and deck out this place for us and get it vibey. And he did. He had different walls dedicated to different themes, like an underwater theme and a desert theme. He had sea shells on the ground and different wax materials. And that inevitably influenced some of the songs? Yeah, for sure. It’s not something we would have originally chosen to do, I don’t think. It definitely had an impact on us. Especially getting up in the morning and going into the studio, it’s like you’re entering into a different world. You close the doors in there and it’s like a jungle. It was pretty playful and exciting to be in there.

These days, it’s hard to find an Aussie festival lineup without the group on the bill. With two platinum-certified albums under its belt – and a third boasting millions of Spotify streams already – RÜFÜS DU SOL has discovered a recipe for success. In between playing shows in the US, we stole some time with keyboardist Jon George to discuss touring, shamans and finding solace in their third album.

album] Bloom, so we had a bunch of ideas in our heads. We bought a bunch of new synthesisers and toys and stuff to deck out the studio. We’re constantly inspired by having different things to play around with. We just got straight into it. We didn’t really have a break either, which ended up catching up with us halfway through the process. We were burning the candle at both ends in many ways but that sort of leaned into the feeling of the album, with some darker, moodier cuts.

Hi Jon, you’ve produced two platinum albums, with the third already boasting millions of streams. What’s your secret? I think for making music in general, it’s best just to write for yourself and what you would like to hear – and that’s been an ethos we’ve always had. The three of us bring our own individual tastes and influences. I guess we just have a nice little thing going on, pushing for what each other wants, and it ends up being RÜFÜS as a result.

Did you originally set out to create this emotionallydriven, darker album? I think whenever we get in the studio, we try to follow and chase a feeling first and foremost. That must have been the feeling that was going around the studio at the time, I guess.

Can you tell us more about the making of Solace? We set up shop in LA… We were quite eager to get in the studio after two years of touring from [second

20

I heard there was a shaman involved. Can you tell a little about that? (Laughs) It’s interesting. He’s a funny guy. He’s a mutual friend that came over to visit early on in the process. We had a beautiful house in Venice, LA, where we lived with our girlfriends, and our manager as well at times.

What inspired the album title? Well, I think the meaning of it is finding comfort in a time of distress. That sort of thing just tied in perfectly with the way the album rolled out. I guess going into the studio each day, it’s like prayer for us. It’s something that we’re very comfortable with and whenever we’re uncomfortable in our personal lives, it’s easy just to go into the studio and have this cathartic experience. Getting music out on the table and going through those feelings like you would with a therapist, but you’re doing it with synthesisers and so on. It was kind of like our solace in the studio. What’s next after the Solace tour? We’re just focused on touring at the moment. I think it’d be nice to get in the studio, at different points in-between touring because I miss it already. But, I think we’re just focused on really building the shows to be the best they can.

You can catch RÜFÜS DU SOL on a national tour in early 2019. RUFUSDUSOL.COM

’Tis the Season 8 Ways to Be the World’s Best Gift Giver.

WORDS BY ALYCE GREER ILLUSTRATION BY TWYLAMAE

It’s Christmas morning and your household is gathered around the tree, awkwardly watching on as each family member takes their turn to publicly unwrap and react to their presents. You’ve practised your fake surprise, which is perfect, because you’re up next. As everyone grins at you with anticipation, you open your present from Aunt Gladys – a notoriously bad gift giver – and find a $5 novelty mug that was definitely purchased from the servo on the way over. Without you even realising, your voice has jumped up three octaves, you’re nervously laughing, and you’re lying about how much you love this gift that will never see the light of day. This Christmas, don’t be an Aunt Gladys. Be the World’s Best Gift Giver. Here are eight tips to get you started. PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT THEY COMPLAIN ABOUT

If you’re clever, you will have made a list in your phone of everyone you need to buy for this year, from your dad to your sister-in-law to your boss. If not, make one now. Next, recall your conversations: what have they mentioned they’d love to buy if they could afford it, or what have they complained about constantly? Figure out how you can solve their issues with a big ol’ present. You’ll get extra snaps for being so thoughtful. SIGN UP TO E-NEWSLETTERS FROM THEIR FAVE STORES

Sure, you’re a bit late to the party but there’s still time. At this point in the year, stores are sending out rapid-fire newsletters full of gift guides, sales and member-only offers, so brainstorm a few shops where your giftees spend all their money, and sign up. Then actually read the emails when they arrive in your inbox. SNOOP THROUGH THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS

Highly unethical but very effective, a quick scroll through your giftee’s Instagram likes and tags can be all you need to find the ultimate gift. When your best friend goes to the bathroom, grab their phone (you know the code) and do some digging, then jot down a note in your own phone. While you’re there, leave a few annoying selfies on the camera roll.

22

ASK GOOGLE FOR INSPIRATION

Desperate times call for desperate measures, and one of my favourite desperate measures is asking Mr. Google. Type in key terms and phrases about your giftee, like ‘creative gifts for graphic designers’ or ‘best gifts under $50 for mum’. Change your search location to Australia and browse through a bunch of gift guides other people have lovingly put together for lazy people like you. THINK PRACTICAL, NOT KEEPSAKE

There’s a bit of a misconception that Christmas gifts need to be thoughtful and memorable; a keepsake the giftee will hold close to their heart for all of eternity. But what happened to practical? Handy? Useful? Really think about your giftee and how they spend their day – do they drink coffee, work in an office, go to the gym? Research to find something that would make their daily activities just that little bit better or easier. For example, if they do in fact drink coffee, a gift card to their local cafe or a KeepCup would be perfect. If it’s something they wouldn’t normally purchase for themselves, you’re on the money. ALWAYS ATTACH A HEARTFELT CARD

Just because you’re not obliged to give a heartfelt gift, doesn’t mean you can do the same with your card. Rule #1 of card-giving: the cringey pre-

written message inside the card does not count as your message. You do not have permission to simply add ‘To Mum’ and ‘From me’. With the time you’ve saved trying to come up with a thoughtful present, use it on writing a short but meaningful message with specific mentions on why they’re the best. MONOGRAM THEIR INITIALS

If there’s one thing that can make a boring ass gift turn extra AF, it’s monogrammed initials. Notebooks. Bathrobes. Drink bottles. Undies. Whether you just want to fancy-fy a present you know they want or need, or literally can’t come up with anything more creative, monogramming their initials works every time. WHEN IN DOUBT, GIFT AN EXPERIENCE

Presents are great and all, but have you ever received an experience voucher? This year, avoid spending the entire month of December trying to come up with a genius present your giftee will probably return anyway, and organise an experience instead. If they’re a foodie, book them into the newest restaurant in town. If they love their getaways, send them to a winery. If they’re always trying new things, sign them up to a pottery class. It’ll be way more thoughtful, and you might just get a new mug out of it too.

GIFTING

The Horse

Tara Whalley

While you may be most familiar with The Horse for its line of timepieces, the brand’s offering extends far beyond. A curated selection of premium leather accessories are available online, which are perfect for the person who likes pressies that are as practical as they are pretty. Our pick of the lot is the newly released Double Zip Crossbody bag (pictured). Crafted from premium Italian leather, it arrives in a sleek black or tan colourway, has eight card slots and a large inner pocket to keep everything safe.

You don’t need a trip to the beach to embrace the holiday spirit – Tara Whalley’s summer collection can do that for you (and it won’t get sand everywhere). Tienda Rosy encompasses bold, colourful designs, inspired by the exotic sights and sounds of Guatemala. A standout print from the release features hand-painted fresh fruits and coconuts, capturing the designer’s travels around the country’s lush islands. Find it across T-shirt dresses, kimonos and pants ranging from small to XL, catering to all of the wonderful women on your Chrissy list.

Leica Anyone can appreciate a Leica camera wrapped up under the tree. If you ask us, the brand’s SOFORT is a pretty excellent gift. Arriving in three colourways, the SOFORT (German for ‘instant’) is compact enough to carry with you, so you can print out your memories on-the-go. For those who like to point-and-shoot, the camera has auto and selfie modes which can do the hard work for you. If you take your photography game a little more seriously, it also has a series of manual settings to enable the perfect shot. Shop it now online, or at Leica’s newly opened St. Collins Lane, Melbourne store. AU.LEICA-CAMERA.COM

GIFTING

By Charlotte

ONYX INTIMATES

The best gift is one that’s a little bit personal. By Charlotte’s range of birthstone necklaces are tailored to each month, and inspired by the personality traits thought to go with them. As well as a delicately cut birthstone, each of the 12 designs feature a different inscription, designed to inspire the wearer to be the best version of themselves. The gold or silver pendants are also engraved with the label’s signature lotus design, which symbolises new beginnings and embracing your potential.

One of the best ways to treat yourself is buying new underwear. So it follows that it’s a great way to treat somebody you love, too. Melbourne-made label ONYX designs lingerie to inspire self-love. Pick from bras, bralettes, robes and cheeky bottoms, handmade in Melbourne from delicate lace and pure silk. With a colour palette of all black (right down to the gift box), they promise to suit everybody’s tastes. If you really can’t choose, you can also pick up a gift card.

Sans Beast

FinerRings

This holiday season, get in the good books with the plant-eaters in your life. Sans Beast and Unreal Fur have joined forces on a furry capsule, and the results are heavenly. Inspired by children’s book Where the Wild Things Are, the collab offers up two fluffy styles wrapped in luxe, cruelty-free vegan fur. Pick from a tote with detachable pouch or small hip bag in colourways of Absinthe green, walnut and black. The designs are finished with Sans Beast’s signature branded strap, so everyone knows about your animal-free purchase.

Perhaps it’s time to give a piece that lasts longer than just a season this Christmas. FinerRings has just dropped a divine Summer ’19 collection which heroes baroque pearls. Shaped by the ocean, each pearl is naturally imperfect and completely individual, ensuring the Melbourne-made jewellery pieces are unique to the wearer. All designs are made by hand from anti-tarnish gold and silver, ideal for sensitive ears and skin. Shop the delicate new collection at the FinerRings pop-up shop, 500 Chapel Street, South Yarra, or online using the code FASHIONJOURNAL for 20% off.

GIFTING

HARA The Label

Salt & Ripple

Feeling good in an outfit starts with what you’re wearing underneath, and knowing you’re not harming the planet can be a big part of that. HARA makes bamboo undies and bras using all ethical practices. That means growing crops pesticide-free, using local manufacturing, hand-dyeing fabrics, and treating and paying employees well. The label has also partnered with the Environmental Justice Foundation, supporting the organisation’s work to stop the harmful use of chemicals in cotton production. But all that goodness doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice comfort, because HARA undies are also flattering, long-lasting and super, super soft.

Sometimes, it can be tricky to settle for just one pair of bathers. Which is why Salt & Ripple has created a collection of reversible swimwear. The Byron Bay label’s first range features a series of bikinis with ocean-inspired prints, finished off with solid colours on the reverse side. The idea is to mix-andmatch designs depending on your mood, for pieces that change as you do. Throughout the production process, Salt & Ripple uses a sustainable printing method to reduce the amount of dye entering our waterways, while also ensuring low fabric wastage. It’s a win-win. aletheia & phos

Let’s Face It

Knowing the person who made your gift did so with love makes it all the more special. The designer behind jewellery label aletheia & phos, Alicia Millan, is equally inspired by her Italian and Greek family, and her childhood fascination with crystals. A love of astrology inherited from her mother is the muse for the label’s latest zodiac collection, Element. With a hand-carved medallion for each star sign and precious gemstones to represent the four elements, the range makes for a thoughtful, personalised gift to keep you connected to the cosmos.

With summer officially here, it’s a great time to invest in a solid skincare routine. Thankfully, retailer Let’s Face It is making the process easy, bringing the best of Korean Beauty right to our doorsteps. The online store stocks over 300 skincare and beauty products, from bestselling brands like COSRX, Klairs Missha and more. HAIR INTERVIEW & BEAUTY

Best of Beauty It’s been a big year for hair and beauty releases and with so many excellent products on show, we’re starting to lose count. To help decide what’s worth your hard-earned, we called on the pros. Here’s the best of 2018, as judged by five hair and makeup artists.

Nisha Van Berkel BECCA COSMETICS BE A LIGHT FACE PALETTE $78 FROM SEPHORA.COM.AU WHY I LOVE IT This is such a versatile palette,

especially for shoots when you want to pack light and get the most out of one product. The other aspect I like is the highlight component, which gives a very subtle glow that’s perfect for every day. HOW I USE IT I use this palette to powder, contour, highlight and add a subtle cheek colour. @NISHAVANBERKELMAKEUP

Shev Kelly NAPOLEON PERDIS HYDRA VAULT PRIMER $49 FROM NAPOLEONPERDIS.COM WHY I LOVE IT I love the electric blue metallic

packaging to start with! Plus, it’s a two-in-one moisturiser and primer with collagen – making it totally skin-smoothing with a cooling effect. HOW I USE IT Apply after serum and before foundation for best results. @SHEVKELLYMUA

Rob Povey RAE MORRIS INVISIBLE MATTIFIER $80 FROM MECCA.COM.AU

Bradwyn Jones

Mikele Simone

ORIBE FLASH FORM FINISHING SPRAY WAX $61 FROM NORDSTROM.COM

CHARLOTTE TILBURY GENIUS MAGIC POWDER $70 FROM CHARLOTTETILBURY.COM

WHY I LOVE IT It’s a great texturising spray to add

WHY I LOVE IT This is an amazing setting powder

to naturally wavy hair, or to apply after using a curling iron. It helps to separate texture and adds sheen without weighing the hair down. HOW I USE IT After I texturise hair using a curling iron, I tilt the head back and hold the hair up. Loosely drop the hair and lightly spray the falling pieces. Then gently shake out to create a natural finish. @BRADWYNJONES

56

that doesn’t make skin look dry and caked. It actually makes your skin glow while still improving the staying power of your makeup. HOW I USE IT I love to use a small fluffy brush and buff it into the skin over liquid foundation and concealer. I also use it under eyes by gently pressing it over concealer. For a more dewy finish, I use a small puff and gently press it over the T-zone. @MIKELESIMONEBEAUTY

WHY I LOVE IT This revolutionary silicone gelpowder hybrid has eliminated the need to carry multiple shades of powder. Because the product is completely colourless, I can use it on literally every skin tone without fear of ashiness or oxidisation. And because it’s more pressed silicone than actual powder, I can continue to apply it all day long without creating build-up. HOW I USE IT Apply like any other pressed powder – take a large face brush for all-over mattifying or a smaller blending brush for more selective application. I also love it buffed over prepped skin prior to makeup – almost like a primer – to smooth out skin texture. @ROBPOVEYMUA

HAIR INTERVIEW & BEAUTY

Summer Fridays A new brand has arrived at Mecca Maxima and Mecca Cosmetica, and it’s all about maintaining healthy skin when life gets a little hectic. Summer Fridays is the brainchild of blogger Marianna Hewitt and Lauren Gores Ireland, who wanted to combat skin damage caused by a fast-paced lifestyle. The first product, Jet Lag Mask, is designed for maximum hydration. Made with only vegan ingredients, plus plenty of nourishing vitamins and antioxidants, the mask makes for a great morning moisturiser or post-flight treat. MECCA.COM.AU

The Body Shop The Body Shop knows that Christmas is just as much about giving back as it is about receiving. That’s why this festive season, the brand is working to make your purchases a little merrier. Every sale during December will help protect and regenerate forests in England and Armenia, through partnerships with World Land Trust and Woodland Trust. In addition, The Body Shop has pledged $20,000 to the Australian Childhood Foundation. You’ve got plenty of present inspo too, with a huge selection of Chrissy gift packs on offer. THEBODYSHOP.COM

Pat McGrath Labs

Certified cruelty-free brand, Lou Lou Lips, has added a bold crimson lippy to its range. Robert is a vivid, wearable red, with hints of warm pink and plum. It’s the latest addition to the label’s ALIAS collection, a growing range of creamy matte shades inspired by powerful women who’ve worked under male pseudonyms. Robert pays homage to our heroine J.K Rowling, who went by the pen name Robert Galbraith when she wrote the Cormoran Strike series.

In what could only be considered a Christmas miracle, Pat McGrath Labs has landed in Sephora Australia. The physical retail presence is a first for Aussie shoppers, with the range previously only available on Net-A-Porter. Shop cult buys like the Perma Precision Liquid Eyeliner, Lust: Gloss and three colourways of the Mothership Eyeshadow Palette. A full product roll-out is set for next year.

Look & Listen WITH TARA SMITH AND GLORIA BRANCATISANO

Brutally Honest MELANIE BROWN AND LOUISE GANNON

Making It Up: Make Up Minus the Rules

Nine Perfect Strangers LIANE MORIARTY

NICOLE THOMPSON

I’ll admit I didn’t know too much about the life of Mel B before I picked up Brutally Honest. Aside from a few headlines here and there, Mel B seemed to be the loud, funny Spice Girl with a near-perfect life. But her tell-all memoir proved just how wrong I was. Behind all the success and fame, Mel B reveals a heartbreaking story of pain, abuse and loss. Her book goes far beyond describing the life of a Spice Girl – instead detailing a 10-year battle in an alledgedly abusive relationship and ultimately, a suicide attempt. Coupled with the star’s trademark humour, Brutally Honest offers a candid insight into the woman everyone thinks they know. A worthwhile and emotional read that’ll have you cheering (and crying) from the sidelines.

Songs for the Season

A Legendary Christmas

INGRID MICHAELSON

JOHN LEGEND

Recorded with a full 35-piece orchestra, Ingrid Michaelson’s first holiday LP is, for the most part, a quintessential Christmas cover album. While this year’s releases are brimming with contemporary reworkings, Michaelson’s take sounds like it could be straight out of the ’50s. Opener ‘Looks Like A Cold, Cold Winter’ sets the tone for the album – its poppy-jazz is carried by Michaelson’s silky, warm vocals. The record is cosy and tender, draped in big-band horns, twinkling strings, and bright backing vocals. The guest spots are perfectly matched – be it harmonising with Christina Perri on ‘White Christmas’, crooning alongside Will Chase on ‘I’ll Be Home For Christmas’, or her Grace VanderWaal pairing on the R&B-tinged (and most contemporary moment) ‘Rockin Around The Christmas Tree’. If you like your Christmas tunes more traditional, we’ve found your match.

58

In an age where anyone can be a beauty influencer, Making It Up is a much-needed addition to bathrooms near and far. Whether you’re a makeup novice, or have a following of thousands, you’re bound to find a few handy tips among its pages. Rather than sticking to the cookie cutter approach to makeup, Nicole ‘Pinky’ Thompson encourages readers to work with their individual features. Covering everything from foundation to contouring and perfecting the pout, Making It Up is jam-packed with tips and tricks from the acclaimed makeup artist. And since she carries the title of global ambassador for MAC Cosmetics, it’s safe to say Pinky knows her stuff. Whatever the skill level, Making It Up will inspire beauty lovers everywhere to break the rules.

After working in retail for years, carols fill me with a certain sort of dread. But surprisingly, this is a ridiculously enjoyable listen. John Legend’s velvety vocals are perfect for delivering Christmas tunes. There are true-to-form takes on yuletide classics like ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ and ‘The Christmas Song’ – both of which show off the singer’s warm vocals perfectly. But it’s when Legend lets loose, like on the upbeat reimagining of ‘Silver Bells’, that we truly see him in full flight. Each track covered is executed beautifully, but it’s in the six originals that we have to pick and choose more selectively. ‘No Place Like Home’ has the potential to return to playlists year after year, and ‘Bring Me Love’ with its sweet Motown feel is another standout, fitting perfectly with the album’s feel. But ‘Wrap Me Up in Your Love’ deserves a hard skip. Overall, Legend’s silky-smooth vocals make for perfect Christmas listening.

Nine Perfect Strangers is the next work of fiction from Liane Moriarty, the bestselling author behind Big Little Lies and The Husband’s Secret. Suffice to say, I was excited to read her latest. The story follows a group of guests checking into a wellness resort, and the chaos that ensues once they’re forced to spend 10 days together. Billed as a psychological thriller, I’ll admit I was expecting a darker storyline. If you’re looking for the same twisted themes of Big Little Lies, you might come off feeling a little disappointed. The novel felt a little slow in parts, perhaps spending a little too long on character development rather than advancing the plot. However, stick it out and you’ll be rewarded with an ending that packs a punch.

Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch (Motion Picture Soundtrack) The Grinch’s soundtrack is at least three fire emojis – though it’s probably not traditional Christmas family dinner listening. It opens with back-to-back Tyler, The Creator gems – ‘You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch’ is a perfectly eerie reworking of the classic theme, while ‘I Am the Grinch’ is one of the soundtrack’s best. From there, other highlights include the Run-DMC ’90stinged funk of ‘Christmas Is’, The Brian Setzer Orchestra’s rockabilly-swing take on ‘Jingle Bells’ and Pentatonix’s layered, magical reworking of ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’. There are also a couple of gorgeous Danny Elfman pieces from the film’s score that end everything beautifully. It’s a weird and wild ride (as you’d probably expect from a film soundtrack) but this is the perfect Christmas combo for those of us who aren’t so fond of the classics.
