For many, the tampon is a necessity, offering the freedom to do everything we normally would when we’re not menstruating. But for a product so tiny (and so common) there are still a lot of big question marks around its use. Inspired by TOM Organic’s recent campaign about knowing what our tampons are really made of, we decided to look into some of the biggest myths surrounding our little sanitary friends.

MYTH #1: YOU DON’T NEED TO WORRY ABOUT WHAT’S IN YOUR TAMPONS, BECAUSE THEY’RE ALL BASICALLY MADE OF THE SAME THING

Many tampons are made with synthetic materials, often not containing any cotton at all. Surprisingly, they’re also not subject to the same labelling laws as products like food because they’re considered a ‘medical device’. Unfortunately, this means brands aren’t legally required to print the ingredients on the packaging of tampons. What most people mightn’t realise, is that your vagina is extremely absorbent, so there is a possibility for chemicals in your tampon to seep into your body.

That’s why it’s pretty important to know about the products you’re putting in.

MYTH #2: AS LONG AS MY TAMPONS ARE MADE OF COTTON, IT DOESN’T MATTER WHETHER THEY’RE ORGANIC

Cotton tampons without the organic certification have often been produced with the use of chemicals, such as pesticides and bleaches. This means there’s the possibility that a multitude of potentially harmful chemicals may still be in the final product. Opting for organic tampons, like the TOM Organic range, means that not a single chemical is involved in the manufacturing process at all.

MYTH #3: YOU NEED TO CHANGE YOUR TAMPON EVERY TIME YOU GO TO THE TOILET

There seems to be a huge debate over whether you should change your tampon each time you go to the toilet. But the short answer is no. As long as you keep the string clean when you’re doing your biz, most medical professionals agree that your risk of vaginal infection isn’t any higher than if you change your tampon each time.

MYTH #4: YOU CAN’T WEAR TAMPONS OVERNIGHT

Contrary to what your mum used to tell you, you can in fact wear a tampon overnight. It’s just important to ensure you stick to the guidelines on the packet, and change it at around the eight-hour mark. Pop it in right before you jump into bed, and change it as soon as you wake up.

MYTH #5: ALL TAMPONS ARE BIODEGRADABLE

If your tampons contain any synthetic ingredients at all, they won’t actually break down. Opting for a brand like TOM Organic means your tampons will be made from 100 per cent organic cotton and nothing else, and are completely biodegradable.

That said, they should still be disposed of in a sanitary bin for health and safety reasons.

MYTH #6: IF MY TAMPONS ARE BIODEGRADABLE, I CAN FLUSH THEM, YEAH?

While biodegradable tampons can break down in landfill, it’s still best to avoid flushing them (unless you have a septic tank or compostable toilet). Not only are you massively increasing the risk of clogging your plumbing when putting them in the toilet, our water treatment plants don’t actually filter out tampons. The risk to our waterways is a big one. In fact, back in 2013, Tasmania’s Tamar River was found to have masses of tampon strings in its bed.

MYTH #7: LEAVING A TAMPON IN FOR MORE THAN EIGHT HOURS WILL CAUSE TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME (TSS)

While TSS can be related to tampon use, it’s not actually caused by them. The illness stems from the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, which can be found on your skin (and occasionally in your vagina). Most people produce antibodies to the toxin but, in very rare cases, some don’t. This is when the risk of TSS increases. Even though there’s only been 25 reported cases of TSS in Australia since 1981, it’s still recommended you switch out your tampon three to six times per day to be safe.

MYTH #8: TAMPONS HAVE AN EXPIRY DATE

Always check the box, but tampons like TOM Organic’s do not have an expiry date. You’ll just need to ensure you store them correctly in a cool, dry place to maintain their integrity. That means the emergency one that’s been rolling around in your bag for the last year might not be the best way to go.

Finding Solace WORDS BY TARA SMITH

It’s been seven years since the release of RÜFÜS DU SOL’s debut EP. Back then, the formidable trio – known simply as RÜFÜS – quickly found a home among Australia’s dance scene, with releases like ‘Take Me’ and ‘Desert Night’ hitting Apple Music’s Indie Top Ten chart.

We had a nice big pool area and next to the pool, there was this studio. It was just decked out.

It was really good, but it was a little bit lifeless at the start.

That’s where the shaman came in. We were having drinks at our house and he had a compass in his pocket, and a notepad and pen, and he’s taking notes as to how to try and deck out this place for us and get it vibey. And he did. He had different walls dedicated to different themes, like an underwater theme and a desert theme. He had sea shells on the ground and different wax materials.

And that inevitably influenced some of the songs?

Yeah, for sure. It’s not something we would have originally chosen to do, I don’t think. It definitely had an impact on us. Especially getting up in the morning and going into the studio, it’s like you’re entering into a different world. You close the doors in there and it’s like a jungle. It was pretty playful and exciting to be in there.

These days, it’s hard to find an Aussie festival lineup without the group on the bill.

With two platinum-certified albums under its belt – and a third boasting millions of Spotify streams already – RÜFÜS DU SOL has discovered a recipe for success.

In between playing shows in the US, we stole some time with keyboardist Jon George to discuss touring, shamans and finding solace in their third album.

album] Bloom, so we had a bunch of ideas in our heads. We bought a bunch of new synthesisers and toys and stuff to deck out the studio.

We’re constantly inspired by having different things to play around with. We just got straight into it. We didn’t really have a break either, which ended up catching up with us halfway through the process. We were burning the candle at both ends in many ways but that sort of leaned into the feeling of the album, with some darker, moodier cuts.

Hi Jon, you’ve produced two platinum albums, with the third already boasting millions of streams.

What’s your secret?

I think for making music in general, it’s best just to write for yourself and what you would like to hear – and that’s been an ethos we’ve always had.

The three of us bring our own individual tastes and influences. I guess we just have a nice little thing going on, pushing for what each other wants, and it ends up being RÜFÜS as a result.

Did you originally set out to create this emotionallydriven, darker album?

I think whenever we get in the studio, we try to follow and chase a feeling first and foremost. That must have been the feeling that was going around the studio at the time, I guess.

Can you tell us more about the making of Solace?

We set up shop in LA… We were quite eager to get in the studio after two years of touring from [second

I heard there was a shaman involved. Can you tell a little about that?

(Laughs) It’s interesting. He’s a funny guy. He’s a mutual friend that came over to visit early on in the process. We had a beautiful house in Venice, LA, where we lived with our girlfriends, and our manager as well at times.

What inspired the album title?

Well, I think the meaning of it is finding comfort in a time of distress. That sort of thing just tied in perfectly with the way the album rolled out. I guess going into the studio each day, it’s like prayer for us. It’s something that we’re very comfortable with and whenever we’re uncomfortable in our personal lives, it’s easy just to go into the studio and have this cathartic experience. Getting music out on the table and going through those feelings like you would with a therapist, but you’re doing it with synthesisers and so on. It was kind of like our solace in the studio.

What’s next after the Solace tour?

We’re just focused on touring at the moment. I think it’d be nice to get in the studio, at different points in-between touring because I miss it already. But, I think we’re just focused on really building the shows to be the best they can.

This Christmas, don’t be an Aunt Gladys. Be the World’s Best Gift Giver. Here are eight tips to get you started.

PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT THEY COMPLAIN ABOUT

If you’re clever, you will have made a list in your phone of everyone you need to buy for this year, from your dad to your sister-in-law to your boss.

If not, make one now.

Next, recall your conversations: what have they mentioned they’d love to buy if they could afford it, or what have they complained about constantly?

Figure out how you can solve their issues with a big ol’ present. You’ll get extra snaps for being so thoughtful.

SIGN UP TO E-NEWSLETTERS FROM THEIR FAVE STORES

Sure, you’re a bit late to the party but there’s still time.

At this point in the year, stores are sending out rapid-fire newsletters full of gift guides, sales and member-only offers, so brainstorm a few shops where your giftees spend all their money, and sign up. Then actually read the emails when they arrive in your inbox.

SNOOP THROUGH THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS

Highly unethical but very effective, a quick scroll through your giftee’s Instagram likes and tags can be all you need to find the ultimate gift.

When your best friend goes to the bathroom, grab their phone (you know the code) and do some digging, then jot down a note in your own phone.

While you’re there, leave a few annoying selfies on the camera roll.

ASK GOOGLE FOR INSPIRATION

Desperate times call for desperate measures, and one of my favourite desperate measures is asking Mr. Google.

Type in key terms and phrases about your giftee, like ‘creative gifts for graphic designers’ or ‘best gifts under $50 for mum’. Change your search location to Australia and browse through a bunch of gift guides other people have lovingly put together for lazy people like you.

THINK PRACTICAL, NOT KEEPSAKE

There’s a bit of a misconception that Christmas gifts need to be thoughtful and memorable; a keepsake the giftee will hold close to their heart for all of eternity. But what happened to practical?

Handy? Useful?

Really think about your giftee and how they spend their day – do they drink coffee, work in an office, go to the gym? Research to find something that would make their daily activities just that little bit better or easier. For example, if they do in fact drink coffee, a gift card to their local cafe or a KeepCup would be perfect.

If it’s something they wouldn’t normally purchase for themselves, you’re on the money.

ALWAYS ATTACH A HEARTFELT CARD

Just because you’re not obliged to give a heartfelt gift, doesn’t mean you can do the same with your card. Rule #1 of card-giving: the cringey pre-

written message inside the card does not count as your message. You do not have permission to simply add ‘To Mum’ and ‘From me’.

With the time you’ve saved trying to come up with a thoughtful present, use it on writing a short but meaningful message with specific mentions on why they’re the best.

MONOGRAM THEIR INITIALS

If there’s one thing that can make a boring ass gift turn extra AF, it’s monogrammed initials.

Notebooks. Bathrobes. Drink bottles. Undies.

Whether you just want to fancy-fy a present you know they want or need, or literally can’t come up with anything more creative, monogramming their initials works every time.

WHEN IN DOUBT, GIFT AN EXPERIENCE

Presents are great and all, but have you ever received an experience voucher?

This year, avoid spending the entire month of December trying to come up with a genius present your giftee will probably return anyway, and organise an experience instead. If they’re a foodie, book them into the newest restaurant in town. If they love their getaways, send them to a winery. If they’re always trying new things, sign them up to a pottery class.

It’ll be way more thoughtful, and you might just get a new mug out of it too.

I’ll admit I didn’t know too much about the life of Mel B before I picked up Brutally Honest. Aside from a few headlines here and there, Mel B seemed to be the loud, funny Spice Girl with a near-perfect life. But her tell-all memoir proved just how wrong I was. Behind all the success and fame, Mel B reveals a heartbreaking story of pain, abuse and loss. Her book goes far beyond describing the life of a Spice Girl – instead detailing a 10-year battle in an alledgedly abusive relationship and ultimately, a suicide attempt. Coupled with the star’s trademark humour, Brutally Honest offers a candid insight into the woman everyone thinks they know. A worthwhile and emotional read that’ll have you cheering (and crying) from the sidelines.

While this year’s releases are brimming with contemporary reworkings, Michaelson’s take sounds like it could be straight out of the ’50s. Opener ‘Looks Like A Cold, Cold Winter’ sets the tone for the album – its poppy-jazz is carried by Michaelson’s silky, warm vocals. The record is cosy and tender, draped in big-band horns, twinkling strings, and bright backing vocals. The guest spots are perfectly matched – be it harmonising with Christina Perri on ‘White Christmas’, crooning alongside Will Chase on ‘I’ll Be Home For Christmas’, or her Grace VanderWaal pairing on the R&B-tinged (and most contemporary moment) ‘Rockin Around The Christmas Tree’. If you like your Christmas tunes more traditional, we’ve found your match.

In an age where anyone can be a beauty influencer, Making It Up is a much-needed addition to bathrooms near and far. Whether you’re a makeup novice, or have a following of thousands, you’re bound to find a few handy tips among its pages. Rather than sticking to the cookie cutter approach to makeup, Nicole ‘Pinky’ Thompson encourages readers to work with their individual features. Covering everything from foundation to contouring and perfecting the pout, Making It Up is jam-packed with tips and tricks from the acclaimed makeup artist. And since she carries the title of global ambassador for MAC Cosmetics, it’s safe to say Pinky knows her stuff. Whatever the skill level, Making It Up will inspire beauty lovers everywhere to break the rules.

After working in retail for years, carols fill me with a certain sort of dread. But surprisingly, this is a ridiculously enjoyable listen. John Legend’s velvety vocals are perfect for delivering Christmas tunes. There are true-to-form takes on yuletide classics like ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ and ‘The Christmas Song’ – both of which show off the singer’s warm vocals perfectly. But it’s when Legend lets loose, like on the upbeat reimagining of ‘Silver Bells’, that we truly see him in full flight. Each track covered is executed beautifully, but it’s in the six originals that we have to pick and choose more selectively.

‘No Place Like Home’ has the potential to return to playlists year after year, and ‘Bring Me Love’ with its sweet Motown feel is another standout, fitting perfectly with the album’s feel. But ‘Wrap Me Up in Your Love’ deserves a hard skip. Overall, Legend’s silky-smooth vocals make for perfect Christmas listening.

Nine Perfect Strangers is the next work of fiction from Liane Moriarty, the bestselling author behind Big Little Lies and The Husband’s Secret.

Suffice to say, I was excited to read her latest. The story follows a group of guests checking into a wellness resort, and the chaos that ensues once they’re forced to spend 10 days together. Billed as a psychological thriller, I’ll admit I was expecting a darker storyline. If you’re looking for the same twisted themes of Big Little Lies, you might come off feeling a little disappointed. The novel felt a little slow in parts, perhaps spending a little too long on character development rather than advancing the plot. However, stick it out and you’ll be rewarded with an ending that packs a punch.

Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch (Motion Picture Soundtrack) The Grinch’s soundtrack is at least three fire emojis – though it’s probably not traditional Christmas family dinner listening. It opens with back-to-back Tyler, The Creator gems – ‘You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch’ is a perfectly eerie reworking of the classic theme, while ‘I Am the Grinch’ is one of the soundtrack’s best. From there, other highlights include the Run-DMC ’90stinged funk of ‘Christmas Is’, The Brian Setzer Orchestra’s rockabilly-swing take on ‘Jingle Bells’ and Pentatonix’s layered, magical reworking of ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’. There are also a couple of gorgeous Danny Elfman pieces from the film’s score that end everything beautifully. It’s a weird and wild ride (as you’d probably expect from a film soundtrack) but this is the perfect Christmas combo for those of us who aren’t so fond of the classics.
