Marimekko
NAJO
ASOS SUPPLY
Marimekko is celebrating 10 years of its Oiva tableware line. A decade ago, designer Sami Ruotsalainen was asked to create a range that would be relevant for the next 100 years. Paired with Maija Louekari’s bold prints, the result was the eye-catching crockery we know today. To mark the anniversary, the brand has unveiled a new collection with a novelty edge. For a limited time, you’ll be able to get your hands on hugely-oversized cups and bowls designed by Ruotsalainen, as well as Oiva pieces in new colours and prints.
NAJO’s latest jewellery release is inspired by the Greek myth of Pygmalion. The story tells of a sculptor who fell in love with his own creation, an ivory woman later brought to life by Aphrodite. This transformation lies at the heart of the VIDA collection, with pieces designed to have a life of their own. The range features the brand’s signature silver designs, as well as yellow and rose gold pieces, elevated with stones of onyx and carnelian.
It’s officially time to replace your cushions and glassware, ASOS has entered the homewares market. Under the new ASOS SUPPLY line, you’ll find three dedicated collections to appeal to your inner interior designer. Electric Luxe is for those who like their homewares a little eclectic, while Cool Minimal takes inspiration from statement prints and clean lines. If your taste is a little more bohemian, Global Traveller focuses on natural materials and bright colours. It’s all available now, with prices starting from $20.

Reliquia There’s an extra bit of happiness that comes along with purchasing something which also helps others. And that’s just what will happen when you shop from Reliquia on March 8. To celebrate International Women’s Day, the local jewellery label will be donating a portion of profits to The Cova Project. By spoiling yourself, you’ll also help provide menstrual cups to women in Namibia. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between girls and boys when it comes to school attendance, thereby nurturing their education and place in society. RELIQUIAJEWELLERY.COM
Halo Top
MIMCO
Papier
Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival is right around the corner, and it doesn’t look like this heat is going anywhere. Luckily, Halo Top is opening a pop-up ice cream shop at The Plaza to cool you down between runways. You’ll be able to treat yourself to one of 15 flavours, but be warned. This ice cream has less than 360 calories per tub, so even the healthiest visitors will be tempted to go back for seconds.
MIMCO and the National Gallery of Victoria have continued their ongoing partnership with another limited-edition collection. This time, it’s a tribute to the Escher x nendo | Between Two Worlds exhibition. To celebrate the ground-breaking display, MIMCO has released an 18-piece collection that plays with geometry and perception. Escher-style tessellations and linework inspired by nendo appear across leather bags, jewellery and printed scarves. The range is available exclusively at MIMCO and the NGV design store.
Papier has teamed up with LGBTQI+ youth foundation Minus18 for one colourful release. In celebration of Mardi Gras, the brand tapped House of Holland to design a set of Rainbow Waves stationery, with 100 per cent of profits going towards Minus18. The collection features the iconic rainbow flag splashed across notebooks and notecards, perfect for brightening up any desk. It’s available online now, with the donation period running until March 31.

It’s no secret that women are capable of amazing things. From protesting injustice to lifting up their communities, Aussie women have a long history of breaking down barriers. This season, Converse is celebrating inspiring women via its All The Stories Are True campaign. It aims to uncover the stories of those who've carved their own path, redefining what it means to be a woman in 2019. To get in the spirit, we chatted to four local ladies about what inspires them (while wearing their Chucks, of course).
“At the end of the day, the reason I do any of my activism is because my grandma didn't get any of the opportunities I get today. She was from the wrong generation and she didn't get to go to school in her language. And I have this real gift and passion just to really help the Indigenous community in that sense.” ARETHA BROWN ACTIVIST @_ENTERTHEDRAGON_

Across the Ditch WORDS BY HANNAH COLE
Is New Zealand the home of the most (and best) sustainable labels? On my long list of ‘Life Hypotheses’ sits many a thought on the weird way the world works. The latest: New Zealand is the home of the most (and best) sustainable labels per capita. Bear with me. The land of the long white cloud has a teensy population of 4.8 million (compared to our 24.9 million). And an equally small landmass of only 268,000 square kilometres (which, according to someone on the Internet, would fit into Australia 28.6 times). Yet, for such a small nation, it's making waves and reaching milestones across all areas. It was the first country to open up the vote to women and is making headway to transition to 100 per cent renewable energy sources. New Zealand also nurtures some of the best creative talents across all fields. Maybe it’s because of the inherent proximity to nature, but our friends across the ditch appear to be radically sustainably-minded. Already, we’ve seen a multitude of NZ-based labels taking the sustainable fashion world by storm: golden child Maggie Marilyn, basics guru Kowtow, and the legendary Karen Walker. Here I offer you four more labels to watch, ready to prove once and for all the unbeatable sustainable status of the region.
IMAGE: MARLE
Marle As the creative output of Juliet Souter, Marle communicates a lifestyle of ease, earthiness and luxury. Natural fibres such as silk, cashmere, linen and cotton are used to offer low-impact, staple designs. Equally natural colour palettes – mostly monochrome with a touch of cocoa, lavender and khaki – make for timeless wardrobe additions. You can almost hear the earth sighing with relief every time you slip into one of these pieces. MARLE.CO.NZ
The Knitter
Mahsa
Beach Knickers has a heart-warming tale to tell of community, love and artisanship. Designed by Rosie Ackland, the brand is a real testament to the magic that can happen through collaboration. In working with a team of friends, each collection is created, styled and shot in a way that celebrates the ultimate girl gang (the one we always wish for). With all pieces handmade in New Zealand from local suppliers, the garments will make your heart flutter: puff-sleeve dresses, cotton bikinis and pussy bow blouses. This is the stuff of fairy tales.
Trust me when I say, winter will never seem dreary again. Not when you’ve been sorted with an indelibly cute, incredibly colourful, woollen sweater courtesy of The Knitter. Nicole Leybourne is the self-professed ‘sheep-enthusiast’ behind the brand. All pieces are handmade – between New Zealand and Peruvian artisans – using yarns sourced from both countries. The Knitter is fixated on promoting slow fashion and supporting small communities and, IMO, uses one of the most sustainable fibres available to us. Indulge now for next season, and you can thank me later.
Can you ever have too many bows or oversized sleeves in your life? I think not (unless you have Marie Kondo’d the shit out of everything). I’m not promoting buying for the sake of buying – but Mahsa’s offerings will become your new staple every time. Each piece promises something special to upgrade a mundane day and make it magical. With limited collections (all produced in New Zealand) the eponymous label utilises earthy hues to bring a fresh sense of romanticism to your wardrobe. Trust me – one look at the O’Keeffe dress and you’ll be converted.

Rise Up INTERVIEW BY NICOLE LA RUFFA
We’ve been singing along to Rita Ora’s effervescent pop songs for years – from the 2012 anthem ‘R.I.P.’ to ‘I Will Never Let You Down’ and ‘For You’ with Liam Payne. Now we welcome 'Phoenix', a 16-track culmination of club beats and dreamy collaborations. Joined by the vocal forces of Julia Michaels, Bebe Rexha, Charli XCX and Cardi B (to name a few), the 28-year-old singer remains as catchy as ever throughout her sophomore album. Singles like ‘Anywhere’, ‘Let You Love Me’ and ‘Your Song’ continue to blast through the speakers of our car radios, and we’ll continue to turn them up accordingly. In the midst of preparing for her upcoming Aussie shows, the North-Londoner managed to squeeze in some time with us for a quick chat. Congrats on your wonderful new album! Was it a relief to finally release something you’d been working so passionately on? Thank you. Yeah, I mean it was a relief to just be able to put music out in general. I had the best experience with this album, it was so different to my first experience, in a good way. But I’ve definitely grown into my own, and I am really proud of the process. ‘Girls’ – featuring Cardi B, Bebe Rexha and Charli XCX – was one of the first tracks you had written for the album. Can you explain how this collaboration ultimately came to be? Well, they’re all my friends in their own way. I guess I just wanted to admire these women. I wanted this album to represent my friends and everyone I genuinely like and respect. It was that simple when it came to this record. ‘Girls’ also sparked some controversy from the LGBTQI+ community. How did you initially react to the backlash? Of course I was devastated by that reaction, because I’ve done nothing but support the LGBTQI+ community and I’ll continue to do that forever. They’re part of my life and so I genuinely understand what peoples’ thoughts were but at the same time, I had a good group of people who were so grateful that somebody spoke out. And I think that you’ve just got to weigh it out really. Sometimes people are more sensitive than others and you’ve just got to understand that and remember that. I don’t regret it, it was part of my story and my journey. And Phoenix is a very open book, so everything I’ve done with it has been from pure intentions of happiness and positivity.
20
Do you feel that there’s still a certain stigma around women who express their sexuality within songwriting? For sure, I feel like there’s a lot of ‘I can’t believe she said that,’ and I think it’s been going on for decades. The norm should be different, why can’t we express ourselves? And you know, opinions are going to come regardless but that just goes to show how much you’re willing to sacrifice and fight for your art. So that’s what I’m going to do forever. Another catchy collaboration from the record is ‘Keep Talking’, which features the dreamy vocals of Julia Michaels. What was that recording process like? I love Julia Michaels. I think she’s so talented in so many ways. I just had to have her on the album, because again, I just wanted people that I love and admire on this record. Honestly it started off with
me just singing the whole thing, and then I said to Julia, ‘this song is so much better with two strong females, you should totally do this with me’, and she was like ‘yeah’. Phoenix was released six years after your debut album. Do you think there's been a shift in the music industry since then? I think a lot has changed. You know it just goes to show how much the world has evolved. With my first album, there wasn’t any streaming. It’s crazy to say that, but that was only like seven years ago. So yeah of course, with streaming, and all of the new amazing artists that have come out, I think there’s a lot of change. But at the same time, that’s why I really wanted to keep my authenticity and my truth and go in and learn about myself as a woman and write an album that I’d be really proud of.
MUSIC
Have your musical influences changed much in the past six years? Yeah, for the better. I’m a bit of an old school person, so I definitely listen to my classics – Joni Mitchell, Madonna, Blondie. Everything [like] that for me is timeless, I’ve been listening to [them] for years. But then of course there are all the new artists that I’ve learned to love over the past few years who have also inspired me. Is there a particular song that you think sums up the theme of the album? I’ve learnt so much about my songwriting, I feel like I haven’t got a favourite. ‘Only Want You’ for me, is one of my favourite songs – even though I said I just don’t have a favourite – but I mean like, it’s emotional and it’s really intense and it’s got that incredible Nirvana guitar. I think those elements were super important for me to bring into this album. And at the same time, it has a killer beat.
On a hilarious note, you pulled off a pretty impressive Post Malone costume for Halloween. Do you think he’s planning a Rita Ora look for this year’s celebration? (Laughs) I don’t know how I’m going to beat it, it was so not thought through. I didn’t expect people to pick it up as much as they did. Like it got to the point where I saw a post recently – I think it was on The Hollywood Reporter or something – and they posted my picture, instead of Post’s, advertising the Grammys. They genuinely thought a picture of me was Post Malone. Do they not realise that they’ve actually covered my Halloween costume?
You’ve also released an acoustic version of ‘Let You Love Me’. Can we expect some acoustic sets on tour? Definitely. [Playing] acoustic is one of my favourite moments on tour. You get to really connect with the audience, and it’s an intimate moment.
This March, you’ll be touring Aus for the first time. Is there a song that you’re most excited to perform for us? It’s the first time I’m performing all of those songs, so I’m excited in general to really perform it all.
Catch Rita Ora on her Australian tour from March 1.
Is there a third album in the works? Actually yes. You know I had a great time [making this album]. I always want to do more so for me, moving onto the next is exciting. While I’m on the road, I’ll definitely be recording.

The Lost Tribe Every wardrobe needs a few statement pieces to brighten things up, and that’s where The Lost Tribe comes in. Nicole Costa, the designer behind this Adelaide-based brand, has made it her mission to deliver bohemian designs that appeal to the adventurous spirit in all of us. Taking inspiration from her travels, she’s crafted a collection that focuses on vintage-inspired prints and carefully selected fabrics. We’re talking linen overalls in dusty pink, lace shirts and patterned maxi dresses. There’s also a huge range of headwear, with offcuts lovingly turned into scrunchies, headscarves and head wraps. Only in Vain It’s really easy for jewellery to fall into one of two categories – cheap and of poor quality, or high-grade and absurdly expensive. Georgia Briese began Only in Vain to break this mould. Frustrated by a lack of affordable yet high-quality options, the graphic designer began tracking down everything she needed to make her dream pieces. Each of Georgia’s creations are designed locally from 925 sterling silver and heavy 14K gold plate to ensure longevity. Making up her range, you’ll find a selection of bold rings, playful earrings and fine chain necklaces. ONLYINVAIN.COM

The Fabric Store
While Noble's name represents its two founders, it also reflects the label’s approach to design. Pushing for greater transparency in the fashion industry, the brand is committed to maximising sustainability at every step of the production process. To cut down on waste, it carefully sources deadstock fabrics from bigger brands in Australia, New Zealand and Los Angeles. These textiles are then transformed into limited-run pieces, produced by a small team in a local warehouse. Each collection is inspired by the Australian landscape, with a focus on relaxed styles that are made to stand the test of time.
The Fabric Store is all about combating fast fashion by giving people the option to craft their own beautiful clothes. High quality silks, linens and cottons share the store with specialty textiles like merino and leather. A sustainable ethos of reusing as much as possible means the company avoids mass-produced and ethically-questionable fabrics. Instead, the brand gets its stock from high-end designers, taking on unneeded sample lengths, offcuts and fabric ends. Not only does this bring unique, limited-run fabrics to customers, but it cuts down on industry waste.

We all know disposable forks are bad for the environment. But then again, taking a fork from home isn’t ideal either. We carry them around in singleuse plastic bags, leave them at work or floating in the bottom of our bags. And at some point, they always go missing. Cutlery Carriage eliminates all of the above and then some. It’s a nifty BPA-free, dishwasher-safe case designed to make your own cutlery travel-friendly. Made locally from recyclable materials, the case also comes complete with a restaurant-quality fork and spoon, so you won’t have to raid the kitchen drawer at lunchtime.
Every business owner will know how hard it is to remain plastic-free, especially when it comes to sending parcels. To help you out, The Better Packaging Co. has come up with a zero-waste alternative to standard post bags. The brand’s ‘comPOST’ satchels feel and act just like regular plastic, but are made from certified worm-friendly plant matter. That means they’re completely homecompostable, and will break down without any toxic residue. Choose from standard satchels, padded mailers or see-through poly bags.

The Coral Empire
Bohemian Skin
The Coral Empire was started to bridge the gap between men’s apparel and swimwear. And it’s just a bonus the brand focuses on sustainability too. The new Sydney-based label takes an uncompromising approach to quality and design and in its initial offering, you’ll find six pairs of shorts. Three come in bright prints inspired by the Great Barrier Reef, while there’s also solid colourways of navy, bright blue and coral to choose from. So you can feel proud about what you’re wearing, each is made in Australia from regenerated nylon fabric, which comes entirely from fishing nets and other waste materials.
During pregnancy, women are faced with an overwhelming list of things they should and shouldn’t be putting on their skin. When Bohemian Skin’s founder Morgan fell pregnant, she was unable to find products that were chemical-free and wouldn’t pass any nasties onto her unborn child. This fruitless search provided the impetus to set about developing her own locallymade, completely natural skincare range. The product offering includes a moisturiser, toner, gel cleanser, facial mask and spot treatment – all of which are Certified Vegan and Cruelty Free. Topping things off, everything comes in recycled packaging and is made in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility with sustainable processes.

Simétrie Combining aesthetics and ethics can be a tricky balancing act. However, Simétrie has achieved this delicate mix without compromising on either. The label’s first range of minimalist bags are handcrafted in Melbourne, with all silhouettes inspired by the moon. Everything from the glues and dyes used in-house, through to the tanning process is carefully considered, with the most sustainable options used. In line with this philosophy, the brand uses only locally-sourced kangaroo leather, which is considered to be one of the most ecological and ethical leathers available. Further cementing its commitment to slow fashion, Simétrie holds monthly workshops in its Brunswick studio. Participants are shown how to create their own leather pouches and are educated about the value of hand-craftsmanship. SIMETRIE.COM.AU

HAIR INTERVIEW & BEAUTY
Set in Stone There’s nothing worse than spending a good 30 minutes perfecting your makeup, only to check the mirror a few hours later to see it’s vanished without a trace. Thankfully, there's a whole host of setting sprays on the market to combat that exact problem. And we decided to put some of them to the test. 3INA The Fixing Spray FROM 3INA.COM PRICE $18.50
This fine mist smells great, but has the tendency to be a little too wet and needs to be sprayed at a distance to ensure your face doesn’t end up drenched. Once on, it feels light, hydrating and moisturising, and works well to ensure makeup longevity. You’ll want to make sure you use before your mascara, however, as the watery nature of this product means there is a risk of running. RATING 3/5
MAC Cosmetics Prep + Prime Fix+ FROM MACCOSMETICS.COM.AU PRICE $36
Urban Decay All Nighter Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray FROM MECCA.COM.AU PRICE $49
A staple in many makeup bags, Urban Decay’s All Nighter Setting Spray has achieved cult status for a reason. The lightweight spray locks down foundation, bronzer, eyeshadow and whatever else you’re rocking for hours on end, as well as giving your skin a smooth, satin finish. The nozzle also delivers a fine mist every time, so no need to worry about drenching your face with uneven spurts. RATING 5/5
Ciaté London Dewy Spritz FROM MECCA.COM.AU PRICE $36
This product is posed as a two-in-one – use premakeup as a base primer or after to set. It’s not heavy duty by any means, but definitely does give your look a little more staying power. Unlike some

setting sprays, this one feels incredibly light and doesn’t leave you feeling like you’ve just covered your whole face in hairspray. The pearlescent pigments work well to give a dewy finish, without making you look over-the-top glittery. RATING 3.5/5
NYX Professional Makeup Make Up Setting Spray FROM PRICELINE.COM.AU PRICE $14.95
This spray is the kind worth having on hand if you’ve got a special occasion and your makeup’s at risk of sweating off. Whether you’d want to wear it every day into the office is another thing though. Once on it feels really tacky and tight, almost like you’ve added another layer of makeup. Regardless, it gets a great rating for doing what it says and not breaking the bank. RATING 4/5
Part setting spray, part primer, MAC’s Fix+ has been around long before contouring was considered mainstream. And there’s a reason for that. While it may look like fancy packaged water, the product has an endless amount of uses. Among many others, it acts as a way to refresh skin before makeup application, while also setting it in place afterwards. I’ve recently discovered the benefit of using it during all stages, and have received endless compliments on my complexion since. RATING 4/5
beautyblender RE-DEW Set & Refresh Spray FROM SEPHORA.COM.AU PRICE $45
As a devoted beautyblender user, I was super keen to trial the brand’s Set & Refresh Spray. Suffice to say, I was not disappointed. The twophase solution includes antioxidant-infused water, combined with a nourishing milky oil. When shaken, these ingredients combine to make a rich spray that leaves skin fresh, smooth and extremely moisturised. If you like a dewy finish, you will love this product. However, if you like your complexion a little more matte, I’d suggest keeping your distance. RATING 4/5
HAIR INTERVIEW & BEAUTY
Charlotte Tilbury
Go-To In great news for skincare lovers, Zoë Foster Blake’s impressive beauty brand, Go-To, is heading to MECCA. Launching in April, the pure, plant-derived line will be available in all stores across Australia and New Zealand, as well as online. You’ll be able to pick up faves like the brand’s Face Hero Oil, Properly Clean Face Wash and Very Useful Face Cream. Go-To joins MECCA’s Mindful Beauty category, which features a lineup of ingredient-conscious, vegan and naturally-derived brands.
While Charlotte Tilbury is best known for makeup, the cult brand’s skincare offering is steadily growing. New to the lineup is a two-step regime – dubbed the Goddess Cleansing Ritual – which promises to deliver fresh, hydrated and perfectly spa-cleansed skin. The first step is a makeup-melting cleanser, while the second is a deeply-purifying, bamboo charcoal solution which draws out impurities. The pack retails for $64 and even comes with a handy muslin cleaning cloth. CHARLOTTETILBURY.COM/AU

The Body Shop
We know firsthand that it’s easy to overcomplicate your beauty routine. We’ve got enough base products alone to stop the zip on our makeup bags from doing up. Thankfully, 3INA is aiming to simplify the process. The 3 In 1 Foundation is a primer, concealer and foundation wrapped up in a neat little package. Promising long-wearing colour and radiant, blemish-free skin, it’ll also protect thanks to the SPF15 in its formula. You’ve got 24 shades to choose from, plus the option of using 3INA’s The Custom Drops to create a shade that’s your perfect match.
Beauty products that are ethically and sustainably produced are always winners in our eyes. While most of us are familiar with The Body Shop’s super hydrating shea products, what many don’t know is that it’s been sourcing shea butter from The Tungteiya Women’s Association in Ghana since 1994. The initiative sees 640 local women handcraft 390 tons of shea butter for the retailer every year, using an 18-step process which has been passed from mother to daughter for generations. The latest range has just landed in stores with products available for face, body, lips and hair.

The Flower Girls
Love ZOË FOSTER BLAKE
LILY ALLEN
ALICE CLARK-PLATTS
The Flower Girls follows two stories of children being abducted while in the company of the same person – one in the past, and one in the present day. Both stories are intertwined with a nonlinear timeline, giving you just enough info about each to keep you guessing about what’s actually happened. There are A LOT of characters. And it takes a good 13 or so (very short) chapters to really understand what is going on. Once I was in though, I did find this book hard to put down, which is perhaps why I feel so let down by the ending. It feels incredibly rushed, wrapping up a story that’s been building for 300 pages in the last two paragraphs. There, it reveals several bombshells while killing off one character for no apparent reason, and with no explanation. Prepare to walk away feeling unsatisfied.
Don't Feed the Pop Monster
My Thoughts Exactly
Having been in a relationship for six years now, I didn’t think Zoë Foster Blake’s Love would be of any use to me. Months ago, a friend had recommended her work (and I saw Break-Up Boss single-handedly get her through one of her lowest points), rightfully telling me that Foster Blake’s advice holds a lot of merit. Love has something for everyone, no matter their relationship status. But what really surprised me, was that for topics so widely covered, she still has refreshing advice to offer. While it could have rehashed old adages like ‘you can’t love someone else until you love yourself’, the book breaks them down instead. It tells that you still deserve the chance to be loved by someone else, in spite of whether you love yourself or not. It’s the kind of advice that’s simple, but important and self-assuring nonetheless.
While I know that, technically, this is not a new release, it only landed on my radar recently. This autobiography is a fascinating and brutally honest insight into Lily Allen’s life in the music industry – and the sexism, money and, often, sexual assault that comes with it. She also explores her own personal struggles in great detail, from growing up with distant parents, to the death of her baby, substance abuse and breakdown of her marriage. Interestingly, it’s not broken down chronologically, rather by topic – Sex, Fame, Mothers, Isolation, etc. She muses about her mistakes, regrets and successes, while calling out the pressure unfairly placed on women in the spotlight. A lot of her life has been shockingly sad, but Lily’s honest and conversational tone doesn’t leave you feeling depressed, rather inspired by her self-awareness and ability to overcome her demons.

JULIA JACKLIN
METHYL ETHEL
BROODS
Sibling duo Broods have carved out a little corner of the synth-pop market with their previous two albums. But it’s on number three, Don’t Feed the Pop Monster, that they’re really showing just how diverse the “synth-pop” sound can be. ‘Peach’ is infectious euphoria at its best, ‘Old Dog’ is bright and grooving, ‘Sucker’ fizzes with electro goodness, while ‘Too Proud’ sees Caleb take on vocal duties and shine. Synth-pop is, as expected, the album’s defining flavour, but some of the most enjoyable surprises come when the duo try something new. Like the moody, almost-indierock guitar of ‘Dust’ or the stripped-back plucking that forms the bones of ‘To Belong’. It might have taken three albums but here, the pair have delivered a collection of songs brimming with enthralling soundscapes, stretching and bending what we’ve come to expect while still sounding distinctly Broods.

On her second album Crushing, Julia Jacklin has stripped herself bare. Through the rollercoaster of a break up, and the healing thereafter, she tells a tale that is starkly vulnerable and openly intimate – as if we’re on this journey of heartache and recovery with her. Even in the album’s most fragile moments, when Jacklin’s voice trembles, there’s still a clear strength and power. From the pulsing beat and simple, dark guitar line that leads opener ‘Body’, to the bright, sparkling guitars of ‘Pressure To Party’, the melodies might contrast, but the feeling remains. Moving through unwanted advice, to the loneliness of a rebound and finally, the relief of knowing you will move on, Jacklin lays her emotions on the table. On album number two, Julia Jacklin has crafted an elegantly devastating record that stands strong in its beauty, strength and openness.
Methyl Ethel’s third album, Triage, is more of a grower than an instant hit. Filled with layered intricacies, every listen reveals something new, something hidden – but unfortunately, as a whole, it doesn’t hit as hard as one would hope. While pop sensibilities underline every track, it’s the way Methyl Ethel flip conventional pop tropes on their head that makes everything they create sound interesting. Opening with a bang, the bouncy shimmer of ‘Ruiner’ and the twinkling strut of ‘Scream Whole’ set expectations high while the floating, melodic soundscape of ‘All The Elements’ showcases versatility early on. But then ‘Trip The Mains’ kicks in, and one of Triage’s biggest downfalls is highlighted. At times the art-rock creativity can be overblown, boldness becomes grandiosity, and sometimes the theatrics don’t hold up.
