Riding the Wave INTERVIEW BY MAEVE KERR-CROWLEY

When an Aussie musician manages to break into the international charts, we can’t help but feel proud. Sydney local Dean Lewis wooed the nation back in 2016 with his debut single ‘Waves’. But these days, you’ll likely know him as the plaintive, heartbroken voice behind ‘Be Alright’ – which has enjoyed a lengthy stay in both local and overseas charts since its release. Now, he’s about to drop his first album, A Place We Knew. We chatted with Dean ahead of the debut, to find out what we can expect from the new tracks. How are you feeling with the new album coming out? I feel like I haven’t had much time to even think about anything. We’re on the road in America doing all this radio stuff and these shows and in between that, just trying to keep everything together. Because, yeah, there’s just chaos. How is this album different from what we’ve heard from you so far? My first EP was just me kind of throwing things at the wall, and I didn’t really know what my sound was. But I think now I know what a ‘Dean Lewis song’ actually is, if you know what I mean. So, they’re just better songs. I wanted it to be authentic and raw, and not just a flash in the pan, couple of months of listening kind of thing. I wanted it to be something that people listen to for a good couple of years. Which song are you most excited for people to hear? I had this feeling before I released ‘Be Alright’, like ‘oh, this feels really big’. I have that feeling with a song called ‘Stay Awake’ as well, which I’m really excited about. There’s a bit more positivity behind some of the tracks than we’ve heard in your previous singles. Is that a reflection of where you’re at personally? I mean, I got to about the seventh sad song and was like ‘what are you doing? Stop’. I’m not always just sitting here crying, like people would think from my songs. I’m actually quite a happy, positive dude. So I guess there’s more of that in a couple of the songs. There’s one song called ‘A Place We Knew’ which I was writing about my girlfriend at the time. It’s quite happy, which is cool. But then I got to the end and realised it really didn’t have that thing. So I added this little twist in where it’s like, ‘now we’ve changed and that’s over’ – which actually happened eventually,

16

strangely enough. You can’t be too happy, because that’s just boring to me. You’ve got to have some sort of twist in a song. You’re very visual when it comes to writing your songs. Can you talk us through that? Yeah, I like to think of them as little movie scenes. I want to write a song where I’m reaching out for someone’s hand, and they’re reaching out for mine, and I’m just saying that in a really simple way. And the listener can close their eyes and imagine it. For me, that’s about being really descriptive and simple. ‘Be Alright’ was a lot like that. I love writing songs where I’m describing a little scene. It’s something that Bruce Springsteen did quite well and that I really connected with. Has the huge success of ‘Be Alright’ changed much for you? It’s changed everything. Literally everything. It’s opened a lot of doors. [The song] charted in America, which is just bizarre. We’re doing all these radio interviews, and every day something is happening that’s really exciting. It’s changed my life in every way you can imagine. You started out writing songs for other people and found that it didn’t suit you. Have you considered

going back to it now that you’re more in touch with your sound? You know, I still have this fear of giving something away that I love so much. I’ve had some people reach out now to do some stuff though, and I definitely want to get back into it in the future. But I think my goal right now is to release my first album and establish some sort of name for myself. I just want to prove myself on my own terms and with my own name, and then maybe consider writing for other people. Do you think you’re on track with making your own name? I hope so. ‘Be Alright’ has gotten so big it’s almost a scary thing. It becomes something you almost have to tackle, because you don’t want to just be [known for] one song. In Australia I’ve had a few songs now that have connected. But, around the world, I’m mostly just known for ‘Be Alright’. I guess the challenge now is to be like, ‘well, I have all these other songs that I feel really good about’. And hopefully they even get close to the success of ‘Be Alright’. Wash Wisely WORDS BY HANNAH COLE

A sustainable guide to garment care.

Wash less (and use cold water) The stink test has never been more acceptable: only wash when it is actually required. No stains or scents? You’re good to go for round two (or three, or four if you’re lucky). As an added bonus, fewer washes also reduces fading and shrinkage. Wash a full load every time to reduce water wastage and minimise your personal carbon dioxide emissions.

Purchase natural fibres Since it’s synthetics – i.e. fabrics made from plastics – that are causing this tidal wave of terror, the no-brainer is to stick to natural fibres instead. Look further afield than cotton and scout out linen, hemp and bamboo wardrobe staples. Let me assure you, there’s no shortage of options.

18

“It’s not easy being green,” a wise frog once opined. Kermit was 100 per cent right. There’s no IKEA-like, one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to being ‘green’. If only there were, life would be so much simpler. Instead, sustainability calls for a little more individual research and personalisation – finding the optimal ways to integrate clean living into your life. This can seem an insurmountable block for those of us with a full work schedule and an even fuller social calendar. How do we fit in time to save the earth? While dramatic change is needed in the world, it’s much less scary if we take baby steps. Next on the agenda: garment care. According to Fashion Revolution, 25 per cent of a garment’s carbon footprint comes from customer care. The remaining 75 per cent may rest on the manufacturer, but one quarter is no figure to ignore. Rigorous research before purchasing from a lauded sustainable label only gets you so far; we still have a responsibility. It’s a duty of care if you will. We’re the custodians of the wardrobe, with garments entrusted to us to care for and use correctly. Microfibres have been the topic of conversation for a hot minute, and for a valid reason. Synthetic fabrics shed microplastic fibres during the wash cycle, accounting for the majority of the plastics in our ocean. A study conducted by the University of Plymouth has shown that more than 700,000 fibres could be released during each wash. I’ll leave the maths to you, but that’s a shittonne of plastic seeping out of our own homes, regardless of how small the pieces are. We’re hell-bent on cleaning up the straws from our beaches, but what can we do about the microfibres?

I’ll admit that it becomes a little trickier with a closet full of vintage and drawers of polyester activewear, so…

Invest in a GUPPYFRIEND It’s not an option to just sit tight and wait for washing machine manufacturers to create an in-built microfibre-capturing device. Looking at the current state of world business, I wouldn’t hold my breath in anticipation. So, the GUPPYFRIEND it is. This washing bag is designed to contain all your synthetic garments during the wash cycle and capture the fibres before they escape. It’s big, it’s easy to use, and it might just make a world of difference. And it’s thankfully now available for purchase in Australia via Patagonia and Flora & Fauna.

Or try a Cora Ball The other at-home option is the Cora Ball. It’s kind of cute looking and doubles as an ocean-protecting device. Pop the ball in the washing machine with

your load and watch it collect the fuzz swirling around. Gather the fluff up post-wash to dispose of appropriately (in the bin). Simple. A critical side note here: be wary of any garments made from recycled plastics. Yes, it’s incredible to recycle and transform waste into something great and new. Yes, we should still be supporting the labels doing so. But it’s still plastic. It still sheds microfibres, no matter the efforts of the brand. Not all battles can be won in a day so, as with the rest of your wardrobe, pay attention to the care label and look at the fabric composition. Make the decision to wash wisely and responsibly, and we’ll be one step closer to a clean future.

LORE'S TOP AUTUMN PERFUMES

Talking scents with Australia’s premier perfume destination, Lore Perfumery. IMAGE: GARETH SOBEY

MIHAN AROMATICS MIKADO BARK $190 This scent is inspired by an autumn afternoon in Melbourne’s Edinburgh Gardens. Spray generously, and you’ll be transported to a happy place, surrounded by fallen leaves.

COSTUME NATIONAL SO NUDE $199 Influenced by the smell of skin on skin, So Nude from iconic design house Costume National is a sexy and earthy scent. This one’s as sensual as it gets.

ORTO PARISI SEMINALIS $286

A spritz of perfume as we’re getting ready has been part and parcel of our routines for hundreds of years. But when an action becomes so ingrained in our lives, we often forget to consider its importance. For many, our first bottle of perfume comes not from personal choice, but a gift from someone who usually doesn’t know us all too well. Yet we wear it everyday because it’s there and don’t want to let it go to waste. We’re of the firm belief that finding your perfect fragrance should be a rite of passage. After all, your scent is something that’s uniquely you. So why do we tend to accept a one-smell-fits-all mentality? With speciality stores, like Fitzroy’s Lore Perfumery, taking residence in our cities, we’re thankfully seeing a shift back towards unique and high quality scents of days gone by. “People are no longer satisfied with cheap, synthetic or boring perfumes (even the department store classics are tiresome),” explains co-owner Jessica Tate. “More and more customers are coming to our store to find a scent that’s really special — whether it’s a head-turning power fragrance or a subtle velvety aura to sweeten their day.” “Take, for example, our new signature body care range [pictured above] — we’ve spent years

listening to our customers’ needs, and so the unique scent, texture and features are spot on,” adds business partner Jade McAndrew. “People don’t want just a pretty bottle, they want products that make them feel amazing.” With a range of over 500 international and boutique perfumes curated by Lore’s experts, the team knows a thing or two about what we should be looking for when in search of a new scent. “Our olfactory memory is our closest sensory faculty to our brain,” explains Jessica. “Different smells will trigger so many memories and emotions — and it’s different for everyone. We prefer to talk in-depth with each customer about what they like, rather than simply promote the best-selling perfumes.” More simply, it’s time to disregard the fancy bottle and designer brand name, and start thinking about how the scent really makes us feel.

Think of Orto Parisi Seminalis like a manmade pheromone – it’s designed to spark chemistry between the sexes and is smooth and woody with a soft sweetness. You could say it’s hard to resist.

Sugar Rebels NICK MAKRIDES

If binge-watching baking videos on YouTube is how you spend your spare time, you might already be familiar with Nick Makrides of The Scran Line (scran is Australian Navy lingo for food, btw). Sugar Rebels is Makrides’ debut book release – but it’s not your stock standard cookbook. It’s all about embracing creative and outrageous ideas in the kitchen, with a smattering of anecdotes from the author about his journey to success. There are no 20-minute recipes in sight, so prepare to spend all weekend whipping up these elaborate sweets. While some of the techniques can be kinda tricky, the guide is structured to allow you to master the basics and then move onto the complex decorating. Be warned: without a keen eye for detail and a steady hand for piping, your cakes could end up looking like they’ve come straight out of an episode of Nailed It!.

Beware of the Dogs STELLA DONNELLY

The style in which Stella Donnelly deals with her subject matter – direct, but with a sharp sense of humour – has made her an endearing favourite with Australian fans. Now, with her debut album, Beware of the Dogs, she’s bringing her honest storytelling to the masses. It’s fitting then, that her powerful breakout single, ‘Boys Will Be Boys’, finds a home on this record alongside some wellworn live favourites and a few new tales. Building on 2017’s Thrush Metal EP, Donnelly has welcomed a full band who fleshes out her sound without losing any of the delicate, stripped-back setting. Opener ‘Old Man’ is the perfect mission statement – while brimming with sweetness, its biting lyrics prove that Donnelly isn’t holding back. Her sugary sweet brand of guitar-pop provides a cushion for her razor-sharp intellect, and whether it’s delivered with a mischievous smile or a punch to the gut, she’ll have you listening.

A Tree in the House

Love Looks Pretty on You

ANNABELLE HICKSON

LANG LEAV

If A Tree in the House doesn’t inspire you to get a bit creative with your flower arranging, I don’t know what will. First up, it’s a very attractive book. If you don’t get around to whipping up any of the floral arrangements, it’ll still look awesome on your coffee table. The title walks you through flowers for every occasion, the basics of floristry and the special tools you need to make the perfect bouquet. There’s even a section on how to arrange flowers and greenery on a coffin (if a DIY funeral arrangement is something you feel up to tackling). But if you’re simply interested in making your home look pretty, there are plenty of useful tips inside too. I’ve long struggled with the right flower-to-vase ratio and the best length to cut stems, however, Hickson’s practical advice has turned me into a confident (albeit novice) florist.

Low Grade Buzz

I’m going to preface this review by saying I’ve never been a massive fan of poetry. Try as I may, I’ve not connected with this form of written word. This month, however, I decided to give poetry another chance, and Love Looks Pretty on You seemed like a decent place to start. Turns out, the work of author Lang Leav is, in fact, an awesome place to start. Not only is she a social media sensation – with half a million Instagram followers and counting – her work has also been met with worldwide critical acclaim. And for good reason. From prose on refugees, to words on slut-shaming and odes to her mother, Love Looks Pretty on You delicately captures the intricacies of human emotion. Leav’s words about love and life are profound yet relatable, making her work very easy to digest. If you’ve been looking for an introduction to the world of poetry, this could be it.

Sucker Punch SIGRID

HUNTLY

Huntly pulled us in with the ‘doof you can cry to’ tagline (because who doesn’t love a sad dance?). But that sentiment seems almost too simple for everything that’s delivered on Low Grade Buzz. While the record is rooted in tales that are deeply contemplative and emotional, it’s the balance of triumph and empowerment that really holds each track together. Take the way ‘Wiggle’ flips the standard break-up song, or ‘Drop Gear’ moves from a tender, piano-led ballad to an emotional, techno-pop banger. The real strength of Low Grade Buzz, though, is the strides Huntly – as a trio of musicians – has taken. Everything is sleeker and more purposeful (even the most simple soundscapes are filled with intricate layers), but nothing feels forced or overblown. Instead we get a cathartic, confessional dance party that moves through different styles and genres without ever losing its own identity.

In the two years that have followed Sigrid’s breakout pop anthem, ‘Don’t Kill My Vibe’, her team has continued to make it very clear that she’s not like other pop stars. Maybe that’s why it’s so hard to swallow that on her debut album, we’ve been given 12 tracks cut straight from the Scandi-pop manual. There is potential here – her powerful-yet-delicate vocal is a standout, and her brightly optimistic sentiment layered over colourful production is euphoric. But as a package, it feels too cautious for someone who raced out of the blocks with the promise to tear it all down. Little hints of unclean production refreshingly offset the polish, with acoustic guitar and piano-led moments providing breathing space for Sigrid’s raw vocal to shine. The euphoric dance floor-ready choruses are abundant. But ultimately, it’s tracks like ‘Business Dinners’ – with its offkilter production – that promise so much more.
