The Scoop
Levi’s This year marks 146 years of the iconic 501 Jean and unsurprisingly, Levi’s is celebrating in a big way. The brand has tapped Hailey Bieber to be the first-ever face of the classic cut, and her debut campaign arrives with a new collection in tow. The release includes a trucker jacket, white and pink tees, floral shirt and hoodies, as well as a pair of customised 501 shorts. Of course, there’s also a pair of 501 Original Fit jeans, which come with ‘Hailey’ aptly printed down the leg. LEVIS.COM.AU

TOMMY JEANS
PUMA
While winter may be fast approaching, there’s hopefully still some sandal-wearing weather left. And fittingly, Converse has reworked its iconic One Star silhouette into a summer staple. The new iteration features a cross strap in the signature soft suede, finished off with a rubber sole and the One Star logo. To keep you comfy all day long, an EVA memory foam footbed has also been built in for added support. Choose from five colourways, all available online.
TOMMY JEANS is bringing the nostalgia in a refreshed collaboration with Coca-Cola. Full of bold graphics and bright colours, the release includes a series of original designs from Tommy Hilfiger’s 1986 Coca-Cola Clothes pack. They’ve been updated for 2019 with modernised silhouettes and a brand new TOMMY JEANS x Coca-Cola logo. Look out for comfy T-shirts, sweaters, shorts and jackets in bright and bold shades of royal blue, red, white, yellow and teal.

PUMA continues to rule the streets with the release of its Cali Exotic. A fresh update on the brand’s California sneaker, the shoe arrives in an all-white colourway, complete with rubber detailing and a stacked platform sole. Staying true to the original design, it also features a leather and nubuck upper. PUMA tapped brand ambassador Selena Gomez to front the campaign, and she’s seen channelling the laidback lifestyle of a Californian summer. The release is available in-store and online. AU.PUMA.COM

Double or Nothing Say what you will about double denim, but it’s a look that’s well and truly stood the test of time. In 2019, we’re seeing the humble get-up sneak its way back into our wardrobes. If there’s one thing we know to be true, it’s that a good pair of high-rise jeans will always be a staple. In fact, we’d even argue that the perfect pair can be suited to just about any occasion. To test the theory, we decided to play dress up with a few of our favourite styles from Levi’s. W

The Canadian Tuxedo is perfect for days you’re feeling a little daring and creative. To nail this style, we recommend going for well-fitting pieces (like Levi’s Wedgie Jean) in similar shades of indigo. A slightly darker shirt will add some depth, while a denim tote tops off the ultimate denim look.

Triple Threat WORDS BY MAEVE KERR-CROWLEY
A denim jacket A jacket is key to any denim-ondenim look. To ensure this piece can be worn with as many of your existing pieces as possible, keep factors like fit and wash in mind. Both should be flattering and versatile, but don’t shy away from something a little unconventional.
In true ’00s fashion, we’re embracing the Canadian Tuxedo in all its effortless, comfy glory. With the help of our friends at Order Of Style, here’s how to prep your wardrobe and pull off the look with the expertise it deserves.

A pair of jeans It doesn’t get more essential than a great pair of jeans. For a solid, versatile base, go for a straight-leg, high-waisted style in a classic indigo colour that’ll be timeless for years to come. TRY – CAMILLA AND MARC ZOE JEAN $300
A denim shirt To rival Britney and JT, consider adding a third denim element. If you’ve got your jeans and jacket sorted, throw on a matching shirt, too. Opting for a fitted style will keep your look modern and help balance things out. TRY – J BRAND PERFECT DENIM SHIRT $310
A denim jumpsuit This one-piece is so easy to style it borders on cheating. On its own, you’re still achieving the all-over denim look, and throwing a jacket over the top will maintain the double element. There’s no danger of shirts coming untucked or washes clashing, and a retro-inspired silhouette can add shape without sacrificing comfort. TRY – M.I.H JEANS HARPER ALL IN ONE JUMPSUIT $515

Trash to Treasure WORDS BY HANNAH COLE
The fashion world is finally embracing the reduce, reuse, recycle mentality.
IMAGE: KSENIA SCHNAIDER
Upcycling was once reserved for Etsy craft mums and bargain hunters; I can just picture the oversized smocks created from quilting off-cuts and old sheets. My past is speckled with similar bursts of creativity – I once made a *totally edgy* upcycled skirt from vintage tea towels in Year 12 Textiles. Needless to say, it seems I was a little ahead of my time: the fashion world wasn’t quite ready for a reduce, reuse, recycle mentality. But, it’s finally catching on. Many brands are now flocking towards the seconds of others, scooping up leftover fabrics and then remoulding them as their own. And with so much denim in the world, logically there’s also a horde of denim off-cuts ripe for the taking. Why produce more denim when you can use what’s already there? Some clever chooks are even making it a staple – a trademark – at the heart of their labels. Here are my picks of those making magic and adding a little more fun to the circular fashion movement.
Ksenia Schnaider One way to bring sustainability to the forefront is to make it viral. Which is precisely what Ksenia Schnaider, the Ukrainian denim label, achieved when the likes of Bella Hadid sported the demidenims (a shorts-meets-jeans combo). And don’t forget the asymmetrical jeans that caused havoc among fashion media, with one leg skinny, one leg baggy. They’re the ultimate “why don’t we have both?” wardrobe moment. The savvy husband-and-wife duo sources denim from flea markets and remakes the classics into trend-heavy pieces. Looking further afield than jeans, they’ve branched into fitted denim blazers, incredibly adorable bucket hats, and a ‘denim fur jacket’. Our solution to the fur debate is here: make it denim. Delve in if you dare. I can get behind any label willing to take risks, without compromising the environment. KSENIASCHNAIDER.COM
Amassment Paul Castro is the man behind Amassment, a bespoke Australian label dramatically transforming unused clothes into high-end designs. With each piece made to order, there’s a unique quality to every garment and an immense sense of care. No two pieces will ever be identical; isn’t this what we are striving for in a world of homogeneity? I have my eyes on the ‘4 Jeans Fusion Jacket’, the perfect amalgamation of vintage Levi’s. If you prefer your clothing to be works of art, this is a label to keep on your radar.
Ahluwalia Studio
Coreprêt
Driven in part by the visuals of the second-hand clothing market in both Nigeria and India, Priya Ahluwalia is an active advocate for conscious consumption. Witnessing locals in jarring Western graphics and the growing, heaving piles of discarded clothing inspired a collection of responsibly-made, sustainably-sourced styles for the modern man. Finally. Too often it feels that menswear slightly lags in the sustainable domain, but Ahluwalia Studio’s assortment of colourful streetwear has me lusting. Every piece has been reworked and patched together in a completely seamless way. Alongside pairs of patchwork trackpants, individualised jeans and denim jackets sit comfortably. I am begging for women’s sizes also.
Brought to life by Nessie Croft and Gabrielle Leavesley, the Melbourne-based label offers a workwear spin on sustainability. Discarded fabrics, designer surplus and organic fibres build a wardrobe based on classic Monday-throughFriday shapes – jackets, trousers, shirting etc. I’m no expert, but if I had a corporate uniform five days a week, the fun of dressing would wear off quite quickly. And I live for the fun of dressing. So, if you’re stuck in a cubicle all day, hit these girls up. Build a wardrobe appropriate for work that also moonlights as a sustainable heavyweight. Coreprêt would be more than happy to introduce you to the joys of sustainable workwear. COREPRET.COM

FJ x OUTLAND DENIM
Time for Change Here's why everyone needs to add white denim to their wardrobe. W
OUTLANDDENIM.COM.AU
Long treated as the forgotten cousin of the denim family, white jeans are finally getting the recognition they deserve. You need only scroll through your Insta feed to see endless uploads of white denim tagged with #OOTD. The style’s in such high demand, that Outland Denim has introduced the wash to its new Back of Beyond collection. And for good reason. A pair of fresh ivory jeans are the ultimate staple, and there’s an argument for their versatility and wearability in your every day. Because we know steering away from your blues and blacks can seem like a daunting task, we’ve compiled a list of exactly why you should consider making the change.
They brighten up a winter wardrobe As the weather gets cooler, most of us lean towards sartorial choices of a darker nature. Our bright and colourful pieces are folded away to make room for navy, black and grey. Throwing on a pair of white jeans is possibly the quickest and easiest way to inject a little spark back into a drab outfit. Better yet, the shade teams perfectly with
20
@OUTLANDDENIM
/OUTLANDDENIM
darker hues, so you can hang on to your existing pieces and avoid completely overhauling your wardrobe.
White jeans will forever be in style Yes, white denim is having a moment right about now. But if you think about it, it’s always been hovering in the background, subtly cropping up every now and again without getting any real recognition. It only seems logical then, that when investing in a pair, you look for a fit that’ll be timeless and wearable for whatever future resurgences come your way. We recommend looking for a vintage-style cut, like Outland Denim’s Lucy jean. The ’80s-inspired silhouette offers a skinny leg and high waist, with a relaxed fit that promises to stay relevant for years to come.
You can dress them up or down There’s a common misconception that white pieces are the hardest of the denim family to style, but that’s just not the case. For a casual yet put together look, pair the Lucy jean with a clean white tee and tonal sneaker. Take the look into the
evening by swapping in a black ankle boot and adding an oversized jacket. If your style is a little more classic, pop on a crisp collared shirt in pale blue and throw on a slingback heel.
They could be your most ethical purchase yet Now that Outland Denim has white denim in the mix, buying into the trend can be done in an ethical and sustainable manner. The brand prides itself on having a zero exploitation business model and empowers its young female workers with training, workshops in English, life skills and a living wage. Outland’s white denim range is also its first to feature a new leather-free brand patch on the waistband. Each patch is made from a leather-look, paper alternative called jarcon, which comes with a Forest Stewardship Council Certification to promote responsible management of the world’s forests.
Outland Denim is available online and in selected boutiques, MYER and David Jones stores.

Local Charm WORDS BY ELIZA SHOLLY
Catch up with Local Natives ahead of Splendour in the Grass. If reading this article is the first you’ve heard of Californian quintet Local Natives, then I’ll allow guitarist and singer Taylor Rice to do the introductions for me. “Picture a ’60s band, with tonnes of harmonies, who performs in the future. That’s us.” And while I was in fact acquainted with them prior to our phone call, his description feels pretty bang on. Comprised of Taylor and bandmates Kelcey Ayer, Ryan Hahn, Matt Frazier and Nik Ewing, Local Natives play the kind of chilled out, indie rock music that wouldn’t feel out of place on the Spotify playlists of both your grandma and your coolest friend. Right now, the group’s celebrating a brand new album release, plus a festival tour that will see them impress Australian crowds at this year’s Splendour in the Grass. The album in question, Violet Street, bops harder than it has any right to. “This is the most exciting record that we have ever made,” Taylor tells me. “In a lot of ways it’s a return to us, and what it felt like to make our very first music as a band.” The album’s three-part harmonies are augmented by loops on tape, physically spliced and transformed by hand – a real testament to the innovative tactics of producer Shawn Everett, whose Grammy-award winning name you may have heard before. “Something you hope for as a band is to work with someone who can instigate you at your absolute best, and Shawn just really did that for us.” Since their first release in 2009, the band has had a consistent string of well-received albums. And while he describes Violet Street as the band’s “most experimental record,” Taylor affirms that there are definitely some tumultuous thematics. “It’s sort of joyful and loving, in the midst of a lot of despair. A lot of the songs are about our own identity, and what makes us, us.” The first two singles (and accompanying music videos) from the album, ‘Café Amarillo’ and ‘When Am I Gonna Lose You’, are quintessential Local Natives. Expect lush guitars, pop vocals and the kinds of iridescent harmonies that road trips are made of. Speaking of the tracks, Taylor affirmed my suspicions. “Together they really feel like you’re driving around California, or along the coast, and we just thought that was a cool representation of us.” For many however, the current social and political climates in the US make it a place we’d
22
rather not like to picture ourselves. Taylor, a vocal campaigner for Bernie Sanders in the 2016 presidential election, gets that. “In this super chaotic time where the world feels fragile, and really not what we all thought it was going to feel like, what are the things that really pull you in, and make you feel hopeful?” For him, it’s finding optimism, in the face of despair. “You know that feeling of shelter you get from your loved ones? A lot of the album is really about grabbing onto all that, right in the midst of darkness.” As for their Splendour in the Grass shows, Taylor says the band is “super excited” to come back Down Under. “When we played Laneway Festival a few years ago, we made like 1,000 friends. Everyone was so nice and we seriously couldn’t believe it. We were like, ‘every single person in Australia is SO nice, really!?’ It seemed ridiculous. And it’s been several years since then, so we’re just really excited to come back.” As we began wrapping up, and I made a mental note to add Local Natives to my Splendour itinerary, Taylor excitedly interrupted me; “I just
thought of something funny I want to mention.” “Do you know Cub Sport?” he began, referring of course to the alt-pop group from Brisbane. “Well, I was outside walking my dog, on my street in Silver Lake, and I saw a band were loading up their van, so I started chatting with them. “They were super sweet, and introduced themselves as Cub Sport, saying they had a show in town. I checked them out because I hadn’t heard of them, and they were amazing. It was amazing – such a random encounter, in my street. So crazy.” I smiled as we hung up, drawing a parallel between the anecdote he had just told me, and Local Natives themselves. Both somewhat unexpected, but very, very welcome indeed.

New Normal INTERVIEW BY JESSICA OVER
We get reacquainted with Nick Murphy (FKA Chet Faker). When Nick Murphy announced he was retiring the stage name Chet Faker in 2016, fans weren’t sure what to expect. The Melbourne musician had established a signature sound to match his iconic pseudonym, yet a new musical direction seemed imminent. But after closing the Chet Faker chapter, Murphy took a step back from the music industry to allow time to find answers: about himself, about his music, and what to do next. The result? His long-awaited sophomore record, Run Fast Sleep Naked. We caught up with Murphy to chat about the new album, his upcoming Australian tour, and his newfound perspective on being an artist. Run Fast Sleep Naked is your first full-length release as Nick Murphy. How has the name change influenced the creative process behind this record? It’s been a while, but [the creative process] was one of the driving forces to make that decision. In fact, it was more or less the largest reason behind why that name change was decided on. Once I started to consider putting music out under my own name, I noticed that making music and the joy and connection of it became a lot simpler for me. It was like, ‘Oh, I’m known for this sound, I know what this sound is.’ I was aware of that and it was attached to this name that I only knew as well as anyone knew. I hadn’t been called Chet Faker as a kid or anything like that. It was kind of difficult to not have an awareness of any music that I knew would be made for that project or under that name, so I think that was a big part of it. You spent a lot of time travelling when you were making this record. Of all the places you visited, which was most memorable in terms of contributing to the album? I don’t know if it’s just one place, you know? Every song kind of has a different place attached to it. It was really cool. It was a really interesting way to work. I think part of me is kind of running from something, but another part of me is looking for an answer. I think this record helped me a lot to figure that stuff out. How does it feel to be coming back to Australia with a new name, a new album and what many people will see as a new sound? I’m excited. A part of me is nervous because I always felt that Australia, because I’m from here, [offers] the most kind of judgement on whether or not what I’m doing is good. I think people are
24
more vocal about it back home because I am supposed to represent ‘home’. Part of me is a little bit nervous that people are just going to want to ask for the old stuff. But another part of me also feels very comfortable in knowing that what I’ve done is true and honest to music, and to myself, and that people are going to hopefully be inspired to express themselves through that. There seems to be this idea in music that an artist needs to be consistent, yet also constantly change their sound. Do you think it’s about striking a balance or just putting out the kind of music you want to create? Oh, I think it’s absolutely about what feels right. I think people can get a little bothered about it, but I think that just comes from the society we live in today. We have so much control and we’re sort of pandered to a little bit as consumers. I think people want artists to do the same thing, but that’s just because people haven’t really had the time or the inclination to sit down and ask
themselves, ‘What is the same thing?’ When people say, ‘I want the artist to do the same thing,’ they’re forgetting that the same thing was the first time they ever heard that kind of music. It’s never as good the second time. What are you most looking forward to ahead of the album release? I’m just really excited to share this record with people. I really hope that people can enjoy it and can hear that I was asking some questions about myself and that it’s OK to dig into these serious things sometimes. Even someone like myself, who gets to do a lot of cool stuff sometimes, has to ask these questions. Hopefully it helps some other people.

Quality Time Seven ways to spoil Mum on Mother’s Day. ILLUSTRATION BY TWYLAMAE
It’s easy to fall into a repetitive pattern when coming up with a way to spend Mother’s Day. And let’s be honest, someone as special as your mum shouldn’t have to settle for lunch at your local cafe. Instead, let 2019 be the year you go above and beyond. Requiring no hard thinking on your part, here’s a list of seven activities for that special day in May.
Book a wine tasting Find us a person who claims they don’t enjoy a wine tasting and we’ll show you a liar. An afternoon spent sampling various drops is a great way to bond with Mum. Consider heading out to a vineyard for the complete vino experience, and bonus points if you can stay to enjoy a nice lunch with your new favourite tipple.
Enrol in a pottery workshop We know what you’re thinking and no, you don’t have to be an expert on the wheel to take up a pottery workshop. A number of studios offer one-off beginner classes starting at around $60, and you even get to take home your own fired
piece. Just make sure you book ahead (especially if the whole family wants to tag along).
Go hot air ballooning OK sure, this is a pretty expensive way to spend a day, so we suggest cheating and pooling money with family members. Your big spend will come with reward though, with most experiences guaranteeing a breathtaking sunrise paired with a champagne breakfast.
Enjoy a high tea This may seem like an obvious choice, but we’re not suggesting visiting a stuffy old hotel with stale scones. Do a little research to find a modern dessert bar in your city. Even better if it swaps out the champagne for cocktails.
Take a trip to the theatre A visit to the theatre doesn’t have to mean booking seats to see a big-budget production (although we’re sure Mum would be stoked to see Harry Potter and The Cursed Child). Check out the
program at your city’s local theatre company or arts centre for a few hours of entertainment that won’t cost more than two figures.
Find a night-time art class For mums who like to explore their creative sides, a night-time art class is a whole lot of fun. Companies like Cork & Chroma offer workshops in the east coast’s major cities, where you’ll be guided through painting your chosen masterpiece while sipping on as much BYO wine as your heart desires. Even novice artists will walk away with a completed canvas, which can also double as your Mother’s Day gift.
Get out of the city Pack the car with snacks and a picnic blanket, and take Mum on a surprise drive out of town. If the weather’s nice, why not go for a short hike followed by a lunch in the great outdoors? If you really want to go the extra mile, we suggest prepping some homemade sweets. It’s the little things that count.

The Scarf Company
When you’re buying lingerie, you want to know that the fabric will not only feel amazing, but last for a long time too. Ms. Kensington makes slips, camisoles, robes and playsuits from luxurious silk and silk cotton fibres, sourced from trusted local suppliers and made in Sydney. Born from a modern, romantic outlook and love of travel, every collection is designed to tell a story. The brand’s debut London range, for example, is inspired by the gritty, rebellious style of it-girls like Alexa Chung, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell.
Despite its name, The Scarf Company offers a lot more than just accessories. With over 30 years in business, the socially conscious label produces an assortment of clothing, homewares, gifts and baby products. Plus, in a bid to support ethical manufacturing, it only works with small, family-operated suppliers. On the scarf front, seasonal collections are made from ethically sourced fabrics, from merino wool to cashmere blends. The Scarf Company is stocked in over 200 independent boutiques across Australia and New Zealand, making it easy to get your hands on the range.

Arthur & Hill
Tindle
Arthur & Hill was born from the idea that a good timepiece makes a great outfit. The Sydney-based brand launched in December last year, with a focus on creating sophisticated pieces from high-quality materials. Designs are kept clean and simple, using striking colour combinations to make them stand out. You can expect luxe details like stainless steel casing, glass crystal lenses and genuine leather straps in a variety of colours. Plus, each watch uses a Japanese Quartz movement and is water-resistant up to three metres. Best of all, prices are kept affordable, because a quality watch shouldn’t break the bank.
No matter how old you get or how mature you claim to be, nobody can resist getting excited about reversible clothing. Tindle believes clothing should always be versatile, and incorporates that into its artisanal, eclectic apparel line. Bold printed fabrics and texture-heavy trims appear across a range of dresses, vests and reversible jackets, which can be easily styled as colourful statement pieces. Designed in the Yarra Valley, each garment is inspired by nature and made to be lived in. Plus, everything is sustainably made from ethically sourced Australian cotton, so you can feel good about filling your wardrobe.

Warm Up While bronzer may have been a staple in your makeup kit growing up, it’s taken a bit of a back seat in recent years. But we’re here to sing its praises. When used correctly (and not like you did in Year 9) a bronzer is the perfect way to add dimension and warmth. Here’s our round-up of the best on the market. NARS Bronzing Powder FROM MECCA.COM.AU PRICE $60
There’s a reason why this product is in the makeup bags of beauty junkies the world over. The formula delivers subtle hints of shimmer (but not too much) for the perfect summer glow year ’round. Meanwhile, finely milled powders even your complexion and minimise the appearance of pores. RATING 4.5/5
TOO FACED Sweetie Pie Radiant Matte Bronzer FROM MECCA.COM.AU PRICE $46
Benefit Cosmetics Hoola Bronzer FROM BENEFITCOSMETICS.COM/AU PRICE $52
The Hoola Bronzer has been a staple on beauty shelves for years now, and its cult status is welldeserved. The formula blends seamlessly on the skin for a natural-looking glow, without making your complexion appear muddy. It arrives in four powder shades, but still manages to cater for a wide range of skin tones. Best of all, the product arrives in a handy compact, complete with a built-in mirror and brush for bronzing on-the-go. RATING 5/5
Lilah B. Bronzed Beauty Bronzer Duo FROM MECCA.COM.AU PRICE $64
This bronzer duo features just the right amount of shimmer, and goes on sheer to create a soft contour. The price point is on the expensive side, but the super luxe packaging makes up for
48
it. It’s made to feel like a skimming stone in the palm of your hand, and arrives in a smooth white compact. My one qualm with this product is that it only arrives in one shade, meaning it’s not the most inclusive bronzer on the market. RATING 4/5
The Body Shop Limited Edition Honey Bronze™ Universal Bronzing Balm FROM THEBODYSHOP.COM PRICE $25
The balm consistency of this formula gets a big tick from me. With a blendable and creamy texture, it glides on and delivers a natural and buildable shade. Bonus points awarded for The Body Shop’s commitment to Community Trade. This product is enriched with Community Trade honey from Ethiopia, beeswax from Cameroon, marula oil from Namibia and shea butter from Ghana. And the price is pretty nice, too. RATING 4/5
For those of us whose skin errs on the side of ghostly white, wearing a bronzer is usually an experience that results in an orange-tinged stripe across the cheeks – no matter how light the shade appears to be. That’s not the case here however, with the product producing a warm tint that actually looks natural. Coverage is soft and can be built up, while the small amount of pink pigment gives off enough colour that you can go sans blush. RATING 4.5/5
MECCA MAX Sunlit Skin Bronzing Powder FROM SEPHORA.COM.AU PRICE $22
While this product wouldn’t be my first pick if I was in need of a new bronzer, it’s certainly a good option for anyone looking to get their hands on a vegan-friendly option at a wallet-friendly price. If you really want to get your glow on, however, you’ll need to work in quite a bit of product to get a good result as it’s not overly pigmented. RATING 3.5/5

VICE REVERSA Alpha-H Lines and wrinkles are a sign of how much hyaluronic acid your body has stored up, and begin to appear as those stores get lower and lower. Dermal fillers are one way to counteract the substance’s natural decline over time, but we know that injections aren’t everybody’s cup of tea. Alpha-H is releasing a new topical alternative to these fillers, using eight super hydrating ingredients to give more effective results. The Hyaluronic 8 filler uses acid molecules small enough to penetrate the deepest layers of your skin, filling in wrinkles and restoring antioxidant defences without a needle in sight.
For fans of at-home beauty treatments, Australian skincare brand VICE REVERSA has released a range of Micro Needling Plumping Patches. To return your complexion to its former glory, the overnight patches feature ultrafine microneedles that penetrate the top layers of skin, releasing collagen, peptides, hyaluronic acid and potent antioxidants within. This infusion of ingredients is designed to moisturise, improve elasticity and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, all while you sleep peacefully in your own bed. VICEREVERSASKIN.COM

Louis Vuitton
Lush is spoiling mums everywhere this year with butterflies, flowers and personalised love notes. The brand’s 2019 Mother’s Day range has hit shelves, full of gifts for all the maternal figures in your life. Limited-edition bath bombs come in the form of rainbow-coloured butterflies, a jumbo teapot, and a cocoa butter-coated chrysanthemum. For an extra special touch, the line features floral-scented fizzers with built-in paper scrolls, perfect for writing a note to mum that’ll pop out as she soaks. But in case she’s not a bath person, you’ll also find new shower bombs, scrubs, soaps and massage bars.
Adding to its already extensive range of fragrances, Louis Vuitton has crafted three unisex scents to send you on an endless summer holiday. The trio of brightly coloured colognes are the work of master perfumer, Jacques Cavallier Belletrud, and take inspiration from sunny California. Each scent plays with seemingly contrasting notes to combine the refined character of perfume with the airy quality of cologne. Brilliantly yellow Sun Song blends citron and musk, deep green Cactus Garden features smoky maté and lemongrass, and cool blue Afternoon Swim smells of orange and bergamot.

You Will Be Safe Here DAMIAN BARR
Little Green Kitchen: Simple Vegetarian Family Recipes DAVID FRENKIEL AND LUISE VINDAHL
You Will Be Safe Here is the impressive novel debut from Damian Barr, the author of wellreceived memoir Maggie & Me. The new work of fiction chronicles two harrowing stories 100 years apart – one set in South Africa in 1901 (during the height of the second Boer War) and the other in Johannesburg in 2010. Despite this gap, both stories are tied by their dark tales of violence, abuse and humanity’s capacity for cruelty. The stories follow protagonists Sarah and Willem (one forced into a concentration camp, the other, an oppressive ‘training camp for boys’) who are both promised ‘safety’ in their new homes. Inspired by real events, the stories explore a history of South Africa I knew little about, but have become engrossed in since embarking on this read. You Will Be Safe Here is a hard novel to put down, and shows that no matter how disturbing, history will always repeat itself.
When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
I’ll be honest: as a meat-eater with no children in tow, I wasn’t sure how useful I’d find this cookbook. But after flicking through a few of its veggie-packed pages, I was pleasantly surprised. It turns out, family recipes are excellent for lazy cooks like me. Little Green Kitchen caters for all ages, with over 70 nutritious meals simple enough to whip up in under 30 minutes. Throughout the collection, you can expect such delights as spinach and cottage cheese waffles, sushi burrito rolls and crispy rice paper rolls, to name a few. And despite being made with kids’ palates in mind, I found the majority of these recipes delicious – but perhaps this says more about me than it does about the book. For more sophisticated tasters, each method features an ‘adult upgrade’ to kick things up a notch, as well as a ‘helping hand’ task for mini chefs in the kitchen.
Retail Therapy: Why the Retail Industry is Broken – And What Can Be Done to Fix it MARK PILKINGTON
The rise of online shopping and demise of brickand-mortar isn’t new by any means, but Retail Therapy sets out to explain how broken the system really is. Unfortunately, Australian retailers aren’t the only ones suffering a decline, and while it’s easy to blame the ‘Amazon effect’, this is only the tip of the iceberg. Retail Therapy instead points to the balance of power between producer and consumer, the nature of the supply chain and how brand relationships are changing. Pilkington provides a comprehensive analysis of these forces and the longer term trends that are shaping retail, but more importantly, he explains what we can do to fight back. The book spells out key rules for future success, and shows how retail affects all of us – whether you’re in the industry or not. The read is a little dry in parts, but persist and you’ll be rewarded.

ANDERSON .PAAK
FONTAINES D.C.
BILLIE EILISH
Since she dropped ‘Ocean Eyes’ in 2016, at just 14 years old, unprecedented hype has followed Billie Eilish. There’s something refreshing about the way she goes against the grain of the pop machine, trading manufacture for something a whole lot messier. But what is a dead-eyed stare and a snarl, if the music doesn’t hold up? Thankfully, on her debut album, Eilish is proving she's more than just attitude. With a sophisticated wit and panache beyond her years, she breezes between folk, EDM, and hip hop influences. There are menacing moments of off-kilter oddity, jazzinflected grooves and even huge electro-trap drops. A sincerity and vulnerability is present too, where the noise is pulled back and the strength of her vocals is left to shine. The real question is, ‘how far can Billie Eilish take this thing?’ The triumph here is all in the potential.
50
For many, Anderson .Paak’s previous album Oxnard was a misstep – an overblown, too-rapheavy, misfire that didn’t deliver on the promise of its predecessor, Malibu. So a new release only six months later surely had some breathing a sigh of relief. And with Ventura, .Paak is silencing any naysayers. Here he slides back into the bubbly, smooth-as-honey grooves that originally had heads turning. His croon is back too, with rap verses taking a backseat for a warm, funk-led flavour. Where Oxnard focused more on sex, Ventura is loved up. It spotlights “grown-up love” and the the not-so-sexy effort needed to make something work long term. The album’s grooves are elegant and warm – there’s a vintage soul here but with a modern-tinge that ensures nothing feels outdated. With more grit and less grandeur, Ventura sees Anderson .Paak returning to what he does best, while promising we can’t predict what’ll come next.
Authentic, honest, open and raw is exactly what you’re going to get with Fontaines D.C.’s debut album. The Irish lads have come out firing on Dogrel, balancing a punk snarl with a storyteller’s technicolour narrative. From the moment ‘Big’ opens the album, to the almost-traditional Irish melody of closer ‘Dublin City Sky’, Dogrel’s voice is clear. This album is about identity – it’s about being proud of where you’re from and who you are, and all the pieces that define both of those things. If you’ve only tuned into Fontaines’ biggest singles, you might expect white-knuckle anger, rumbling bass and pissed-off punks – and Dogrel does provide it all by the bucketload. But it’s the more melodic moments, like the tender ‘Roy’s Tune’, Joy Division-esque builder ‘The Lotts’, or pop-tinged ‘Television Screens’ that widen the scope, proving there’s more to Fontaines D.C. than the wide-eyed shouting punks you first meet.
