ey friends,
EDITORIAL INTERNS
Can you believe we’ve hit August? The days are getting longer, the weather’s been bearable and we’re coming very close to one of our favourite annual events.
Ashlyn Veale, Bailey Jones, George Tzintzis Kaitlyn Wilson, Nikki Escalante
We’ve once again joined forces with the City of Melbourne as a media partner for Melbourne Fashion Week. This year sees the event adopt a fresh new look and name (ICYMI, they’ve dropped the ‘Spring’). Inside this issue, you’ll get a look at some of our favourite outfits that’ll be hitting the runways come September. With Father’s Day fast approaching, we’ve packed these pages full of gift ideas and quizzed our dads on their fashion heydays (page 21). But it’s not all about the guys, we also hung out with Vera Blue (page 32) and Izzi Manfredi of The Preatures (page 37). Happy reading, The FJ team x

Converse We thought it wasn’t possible to fall any harder for the One Star. Then Converse goes ahead and taps Tyler, The Creator for a new take on the silhouette. Dubbed the One Star x Golf Le Fleur, the sneaker’s been updated with tonal laces, contrasting stitching and four new dreamy colourways. Each shoe features an embroidered bee motif on the heel and Golf le Fleur illustrations on the sock liner. To finish things off nicely, the shoe’s inner and outer sole feature a message from Tyler reading: ‘Don’t let ‘em kill your flowers, water your garden and stunt’. converse.com.au

Daddy Cool This month we’re celebrating dads the best way we know how – by raiding old family photo albums and asking our fathers to recount their favourite (and most horrendous) fashion moments.
01
My name is… Ken Stanford I’m… Veronica’s dad
My favourite decade of fashion was… I think the ’70s. We looked so cool in our Staggers flares (they were so tight I’m surprised I could produce children). Best outfit I’ve ever worn… I wore a light blue suit with black edging in a wedding party. I looked gooood! The most practical fashion item is… in the late ’70s I had a burgundy man bag. It was great for all your bits (we needed them as we couldn’t fit anything in our pockets because our Staggers jeans were so tight!). Describe your style… it used to be cool, suave and sophisticated. Nowadays it’s old man style. My favourite brand is…Yakka. Their overalls are so comfortable. Favourite shopping destination… I shop in all the fashion cities around the world… Milan, London, Paris, Westfield Knox City. Most expensive item of clothing I’ve bought was… a tan leather bomber jacket. I thought I looked so good in it I bought another in light blue. I’ll never understand… platform shoes for guys. Yes I was a slave to fashion and had a couple of pairs. I stopped wearing them when I fell and sprained my ankle. Still, I did look sooo tall!
03
My name is… Greg White I’m… Leah’s dad
My favourite decade of fashion was… the ’70s and ’80s because of the bright and flowery prints. And of course flared pants. My biggest outfit regret is… Wearing a purple suit with green treads in the ’70s. I wore this outfit on my first date with my now-wife. I picked her up from her parents’ place, and to this day they still remind me of how bad this outfit was. For those below the age of 50, treads were shoes that were popular in the ’70s. They had leather uppers and soles made of recycled car tyres. Unsurprisingly, it’s a trend that’s never made a comeback. My favourite brand is… Country Road. Best outfit I’ve ever worn… Whatever my wife or children select for me generally looks best (i.e. someone with taste). And I have a soft spot for a Hawaiian shirt. You can never have too many Hawaiian shirts. Describe your style… bright, patterned and a little daggy. My wife thinks my style is… pretty bad. Favourite shopping destination… Myer or David Jones, so I can buy everything I need in one go without having to go into lots of shops. I’ll never understand… why you can’t wear socks with sandals.
02
My name is… Rob Furst I’m… Ruby’s dad
My favourite decade of fashion was… the ’80s – shoulder pads, frills, purple boots, big hair, earring hoops and some eyeliner. My biggest outfit regret is… a cowboy pink satin shirt. Best outfit I’ve ever worn… a black and white zigzag shirt from House of Merivale with baggy pleated pants. The most practical fashion item is… my Crumpler man bag, essential as I lose things. A trend I hope makes a comeback… I miss the power dressing of the ’80s. Where did all this casual come from? My wife thinks my style is… her main job. My favourite brand is… I like to keep it simple, white shirts and tees with Uniqlo jeans, suit jackets, Ray Bans and Converse. Most expensive item of clothing I’ve bought was… my Ermenegildo Zegna wedding suit circa 1987. I’ll never leave the house without… my hair in place.

01
02
My name is… Shane Smith I’m… Tara’s dad
My favourite decade of fashion was… The ’70s because there were no decisions to be made about what to wear. Conformity was king, you just stepped into your Levi’s 505s (denim only) put on your Miller shirt (tucked in) and off you went to any occasion. Luckily, Miller shirts came in three colours, so as long as you had no more than two friends you were OK. My biggest outfit regret is… In the noughties I bought what I thought was an ‘out there’ blue casual shirt with a flap covering the buttons down the front. Never worn again. Best outfit I’ve ever worn… I remember feeling like a movie star going to my big sister’s wedding in the early ’70s, I was about 12. A striped tri-colored shirt (can’t remember the colours, but bright!) with a stretchy ‘Al Grassby’ nylon tie, brown flares and brown ‘click clack’ buckle up shoes. All topped with a chunky brown cord jacket. Best jacket I ever had, wish I still had it! The most practical fashion item is… R.M. Williams Craftsman Boots. They go with anything from jeans to a dinner suit. Describe your style… Conservative, rural, try to be one step up for the occasion. My favourite brand is… R.M. Williams. Favourite shopping destination… R.M. Williams in Melbourne Central – relaxed, smells great and no crowds. Most expensive item of clothing I’ve bought was… A Zegna Worsted sports jacket ($2,500 in a moment of madness). It goes with everything and I wear it to death. I’ll never leave the house without… My R.M. Williams.

LO O K IN G BACK
Thirty Years of Rock BY VERONICA STANFORD
This year, Wheels & Dollbaby is celebrating 30 years of iconic Australian fashion. Since opening up shop in the ’80s, founder Melanie Greensmith has grown her business from a small Surry Hills shopfront into a globally renowned label. Today, Wheels & Dollbaby boasts a cult following internationally, a myriad of celebrity fans and a luxe boutique in Sydney. When asked if she ever expected the label to do this well, Melanie is quick to reply. “Oh god, no! I was just a kid. I was 20 and Surry Hills was not at all what it’s like now. I just found a really old, rundown shop and scraped all my pennies together. I’d been living in London and had some great ideas about what I wanted to do, but not really a clue how to do it.” Despite her minimal business experience, Melanie found her feet and success came quickly. The day before the shop’s opening, a jacket in the window caught the eye of Michael Jackson. “We had just painted the store and were putting out all the stock,” she remembers. “We didn’t have much stuff but we did have this great leather jacket in the window – all studded and just amazing, like an old vintage rocker one. It was just in the window to tell people that we were opening. Suddenly I got a knock on the glass doors and there were three guys and I thought ‘Oh, god. That guy looks like Michael Jackson.’ And one of the guys said ‘Michael would like to come in.’ It was amazing, I mean he spent a fortune, bought the jacket in the window and helped me pay the rent for the next month. Because that’s all you really thought about back then (laughs).” It didn’t take long for word to spread and within a few years, Melanie had a clientele of celebrities that included Bob Dylan, Aerosmith, The Divinyls and INXS. “We used to screenprint the T-shirts ourselves out the back and I used to sew mini skirts at night. It was such hard work but so exciting, that it didn’t matter.” Wheels & Dollbaby’s first big hurdle came in 1992, as the grunge movement hit Australia and with it, a culture of dressing down. The time was pivotal for Melanie, as she tried to navigate the new trend. “You went from people buying cowboy boots and leather jackets and pants, and then suddenly, overnight, Nirvana came out. And all anyone wanted to wear
22
was op-shop pieces and flannies. It was anti-fashion, you couldn’t be seen to be fashionable. So we started making flannelette shirts with big prints on the back. And somehow, we got through it.” Around this time, Courtney Love was spotted wearing Wheels & Dollbaby. Her influence propelled Melanie’s brand onto the international market. Then came the early 2000s, which saw the brand receive huge, unparalleled success in England. Over the next five years, Wheels & Dollbaby became the biggest Australian fashion house in the UK, with Melanie paving the way for Australian fashion on a global scale. “I didn’t really have a strategy, I just went to the buyers at Harvey Nichols at the same time as Sass & Bide and I think it gave them an interest in Australian fashion. I thought, ‘I’ll start at the top and if I don’t get in there, I’ll try some other places.’ But I got in and it was huge. I think we had 30 concessions throughout England – in Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Selfridges. It was great to do that in England because to me, making it there is really hard.” Throughout the decade, Wheels & Dollbaby was famously spotted on Kate Moss at Glastonbury,
as well as Daisy Lowe, Kelly Osbourne, Scarlett Johansson and Katy Perry. Melanie also made a friend in Dita Von Teese, which saw the pair collaborate on an embroidered cardigan that today spans over 22 colourways (and counting). In 2008, Melanie decided to redirect her focus back to the Australian market and opened a luxe boutique in Perth. “I’ve been very lucky in the fact that I own my company and can choose how I want to do it. I’ve always kept it that way, so if ever I feel like I’m doing too much, I don’t have to.” Moving forward, Melanie has her sights set on the US market. In the meantime, she’s set to celebrate 30 years of Wheels & Dollbaby with a concert and fashion show at the Crown Pyramid in Perth. I ask her where she hopes the brand will be in another 10 years and her response is simple. “Hopefully just as relevant,” she says. “Nowadays, I get people’s daughters coming in, whose mothers used to shop with us. That’s pretty cool, isn’t it?” wheelsanddollbaby.com

Coming of Age BY LEAH WHITE
Perennial is the debut record from Vera Blue. And behind the moniker, is Celia Pavey. In her early career, Celia was heavily influenced by her country upbringing and cut her teeth as a folk singer. The new release, however, signals a true coming of age, and one that merges her folk past with an electronic pop future. We caught up with Celia and chatted heartbreak, gardening, Vera Wang’s Princess fragrance and career highlights. How long have you been working on Perennial? I think it’s been two years. As soon as we released the last record, we went straight into writing again. I work with a producer called Andy Mak, and his younger brother Tom co-writes with me. And they have an engineer named Jackson – they’re Vera Blue with me. Did they help you make the transition from folk music to electronic pop? I fell in love with electronic music a while ago, but the folky side of things always pulled me back – because that’s what I grew up listening to and playing. I was influenced by stuff like Alt-J, and FKA Twigs… really emotional electronic music. I didn’t know how to approach it myself though, because I don’t have much experience in self-production, I just write. Since working with Andy, I’ve picked up on a lot of stuff. Now when we work together as a team, we all take turns in adding to the production – we’ll all play on the same pad, or synths, or hit drums altogether... it’s so good. Tell us about the inspiration behind the album. When we first started writing Perennial, I just thought in my head; it’s just going to be a bunch of songs, just a bunch of songs that we’re going to write over the next two years. The album was born from the ashes of a relationship that had just come to an end, and we structured it into three different chapters. Tom, my co-writer, actually did that when we finished the whole record – broke it up into the different phases that I went through to overcome heartbreak. From the rawness of heartbreak, to a place of renewed strength. And I heard your Dad actually came up with the album title? Yeah, when Dad and I were listening to the album together, we knew what it all felt like, but we couldn’t put it into a word. My Dad’s a horticulturist, and I’m obsessed with flowers and plants. So he suggested Perennial because it refers to plants and
32
flowers that grow back year after year, season after season. It really related to what the album is about, sort of constantly coming back. This record as a whole is a recovery, a repairing album. Why did you decide to give Vera Blue a project name? I met Gosling at a writing camp and she actually put the idea in my head. I thought the project deserved its own name, as it was so different to my old music, it wasn’t just ‘folky’. Vera Blue was so fresh, so different… nothing I’d ever heard before. And how did you settle on a name? I was laying in my room one day, thinking about titles and the things that mean a lot to me, things that I grew up with. My first perfume was Vera Wang Princess. I remember drenching myself in it before I’d go to bed, like I was Sleeping Beauty or something (laughs). So that’s where Vera comes from. And in terms of Blue, my mum used to get called Blue or Bluey when she was younger, because of her red hair.
You’re about to head on tour, how do you decide what you’re going to wear on stage? That’s one of the most exciting things for me, I love fashion. For a festival, I’ll wear something a little more accentuated and outrageous, because there are people quite far away that need to see. With the Perennial tour, I might start wearing more florals. This record has such a growing strength about it and once you get halfway through, there’s a real kind of boldness that I discovered in myself. So there’s a chance on this tour to have a costume change halfway through to symbolise the album’s different stages. What’s been your career highlight to date? One career highlight… there’s been a few, but one that always sticks in my head is performing ‘Never Be Like You’ with Flume at Splendour. That is something that’ll stay with me forever, and I can’t believe it’s already been a year since that happened. Also performing with Illy at the ARIAs. I just can’t pick one. How to Feel BY BIANCA O’NEILL
The Preatures’ new album, Girlhood, explores just that. Written from the perspective of their elusive and muchfollowed frontwoman, Isabella ‘Izzi’ Manfredi, it speaks of the confusions and contradictions of being a modern woman. Well, at least according to the press release, anyway. But what is it to be a ‘modern woman’ in 2017? Thankfully, even the often-Chanel-clad Manfredi doesn’t have it all worked out yet. “There are a lot of things that go on for women at all sorts of levels… the last thing that women want is for someone else to be telling them what it ‘means’ to be a woman.” “What makes me a modern woman? A lot of the record is about the fact that I’m a hypocrite – I have certain values that I would like to uphold but fall short most of the time. I still have an inner misogynist, I still have an inner sexist – and that’s the thing that I need to confront.” It’s interesting to hear a woman in the music industry speak of her inner misogyny, considering the endless headlines and rallying cries of how hard it is out there for girls in music. “When you start to bring ideas of sexism and gender bias into it, we make a lot of assumptions about behaviour and meaning, when a lot of the time it’s just because the music industry sucks,” she laughs. “At the heart of making something – the spirit is genderless. The creative spirit, the musical spirit, doesn’t have a gender.” It’s an inspiring idea – but possibly one that is a little harder to prove in practice. When I ask about how that idea could work alongside media’s gendered focus on herself, a frontwoman (as opposed to a frontman), she sighs. “This is the tricky thing,” she tells me. “There can be jealousy, and there can be times in the band where the boys feel like they’re being completely ignored – and you don’t know whether that’s because I’m a woman and everyone’s focussing on me, or whether that’s just because I’m the frontperson.” It calls to mind, for me at least, another famous Aussie female rocker. There’s a bit of The Divinyls on this record – especially on songs like ‘The First Night’. It’s an interesting parallel, as we’re sitting here, talking about womanhood.
Chrissy’s struggle with the public perception of her famous school uniform - and the inevitable connection with sex – was well documented. Regardless of what it actually meant to her, it meant something else to a lot of men. “I can relate to her not wanting that kind of symbolism she dipped into with the school uniform. It’s fucking with authority… you just do things as a performer, you don’t really think about them. And then other people take meaning from it.” “None of us want to be misunderstood… you don’t have complete control over how people perceive what you’ve made. And often you don’t really understand it yourself.” Gendered or genderless, the reductive idea on the presser that this entire album is about the pitfalls and pinpricks of being a ‘girl’ doesn’t really give it the credit it deserves. The lesser-explored depths are possibly more important than that – from the universal pain of the comingof-age experience, through to a unique collaboration with Aboriginal elder Aunty Jacinta Tobin, in her Indigenous Sydney Dharug language. “Writing with [ Jacinta] was the easiest part… It was a completely different experience and a completely unexpected result for me. It was a huge gift to receive [native] language in the way that I did.”
By now Manfredi is breathless – she’s been lugging her suitcase all the way up Liverpool Street while speaking to me on the phone. It’s not quite what you’d expect if you follow her journey on Instagram. Life, as seems to be the way on social media these days, appears like a glamorous party for Manfredi, punctuated by her ongoing Chanel collaboration. Kitted out in the French house’s latest runway looks on stage seems so organic. “It’s been very, very natural – and that’s the best part about it. They support me as an artist, I love the history of the house, I love that Gabrielle was such a patron of the arts…” “I love the theatre of the [runway] shows, the sense of drama and spectacle,” she enthuses. “As a performer, it’s a real privilege to be at those shows.” So this is Manfredi: sitting on a park bench, tired after schlepping a suitcase up Liverpool Street, and talking nonchalantly about the rarefied air of a Chanel runway. Perhaps life is really just about these moments of contradiction. And maybe that’s exactly what being ‘a modern woman in 2017’ is all about. For national tour dates visit thepreatures.com

The Jersey Company
Kesem Boy
The hunt for comfortable, good-looking bedding can be a long one. For Eve Quigley, the process took over a decade before she finally took matters into her own hands. In 2015, The Jersey Company launched with T-Sheets, a line of bedding made from 100 per cent cotton jersey. The natural fabric lets skin breathe and moves with your body as you sleep, perfect for sensitive skin. Jump online to select from a series of neutral tones or choose from existing ‘Shop the Look’ bundles. Shipping is free on orders over $100, and the team will also help with style advice. thejerseycompany.com
We’ve already introduced you to Kesem Boy, so it’s time we got down to the nitty gritty. The linen label sources the highest quality European fabrics, dressing all cosy areas of your home with vibrant bedding, towels, throws and cushions. The aim is to make your living space both creative and inviting. All Kesem Boy bedding is made from 100 per cent cotton and is Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Certified, meaning no nasty chemicals or dyes are used. Plus, it’s all machine washable, so you can expect a very good night’s sleep. kesemboy.com
Deiji Studios The Deiji Studios philosophy is simple: create pieces which fuse comfort and quality for your best sleep yet. Launched last year, the Byron Baybased label offers a selection of bedding and loungewear created from French linen. The fabric is made from the natural fibres of the flax plant and is stone washed for a soft feel. Flax linen is 30 per cent stronger than cotton, hypoallergenic, highly breathable and environmentally friendly, as it uses less water and chemicals to cultivate. Plus it looks beautiful in the bedroom. deijistudios.com.au

Using 100 per cent natural fabrics like lightweight cotton and charmeuse silk, every garment allows freedom of movement while you sleep and great ventilation. Modern silhouettes and bold prints are simply the cherries on top. pjMe’s debut collection is available to explore online now. pjme.co
Quiet When an artist starts a lifestyle brand to deliver creative, considered PJs, you know it’s going to be good. Quiet is all about getting away from busy lifestyles and living slow, conscious and creative lives. The loungewear is designed by Sydney artist Kareena Zerefos and acts as a counterpoint to the culture of fast, disposable fashion. It’s all made locally in Sydney, using natural and sustainable materials. The pieces are cosy enough to sleep in, yet nice enough to wear out of the house, too. It even has a dedicated vegan range, so you can sleep well and help the planet. quietsydney.com

Lash Out A sweep of mascara is the quickest (and most subtle) way to take your face from ‘I woke up like this’ to ‘I’ve got my shit together’. We put a few popular products to the test, to see which make the grade.
Brand Giorgio Armani Name Eyes To Kill Mascara From call 1300 651 991 for stockists Price $57 If super long lashes without clumps is your end goal, this mascara is your Holy Grail. It instantly elongates lashes and has no fallout after 12 hours of wear. Plus, the applicator is a simple straight shape, which means it’s easy to apply and you won’t risk poking your eyes out. That’s worth spending the big bucks on. Rating Brand YSL Name Mascara Effet Faux Cils The Shock From call 1300 651 991 for stockists Price $57 YSL's The Shock glides freely onto lashes providing a light, comfortable feel for a bold and glamorous look. Combining an hourglass-shaped brush with a unique volumising formula, it effortlessly coats your lashes in just one smooth stroke. Just a single application is required, making morning time as simple as it should be. Rating
Brand Tarte Name Tartiest Mascara From sephora.com.au Price $32 If you’re looking for the perfect everyday mascara, then you’re in the right place. This light formula leaves lashes inky black and the short bristles grab onto every lash – even the tiniest ones – creating a natural, flirty look. No clumps, no flakes, no smudging and buildable enough for night or daytime looks. Vegan and crueltyfree is an added bonus. Rating

Brand Lancôme Name Monsieur Big Mascara From call 1300 651 991 for stockists As it turns out, size does matter. Monsieur Big has a large brush that allows for easy application with one quick swipe, while still providing a lot of separation. It visibly lengthened my lashes and stayed on all day without a smudge. Would recommend, especially to those Sex In The City fans out there given its name. Carrie Bradshaw would have definitely found a winner here. Rating
Brand Napoleon Perdis Name Peep Show Madame Curl Curl From napoleonperdis.com Price $39 Napolean's jet-black brush is utterly clump-free. And when I say clump-free, I'm not joking around. I used it for a Twiggy look on my bottom lashes and it elongated them beyond, without a spider-y clump in sight. Phenomenal. Rating Brand MECCA MAX Name Eye Max Power Couple Mascara From mecca.com.au Price $38 This mascara is the Barack and Michelle of the beauty world – the ultimate power couple. The skinny brush separates lashes, then the fat brush adds curve and volume. I was impressed with this product’s staying power. And the small brush is great for getting into the inner corners and lower lash line. Rating

Lenzo+Merchant
Gemma Vendetta
Lenzo and Merchant began with a love of unique fragrances from niche perfume houses. The brand’s bath oils and body washes were originally created for personal use, but the duo behind the brand realised they were onto something good. Now, Lenzo and Merchant is available to the public, stocking a sophisticated range of bath products with fragrances like damask rose, bitter orange and sandalwood and vanilla. They’re all made from plant-based ingredients and even have top, middle and base notes like perfumes do. Now your skin can feel good and smell even better. lenzoandmerchant.com.au
Gemma Vendetta is a professional makeup artist and hairdresser who turned away from using big brand cosmetics after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. A growing consciousness of nasty chemicals in beauty led Gemma to launch her eponymous cosmetics brand. The line of natural products works harmoniously with the body and nature, using mineralbased ingredients to perform at a professional level. Made in Australia, Gemma’s range is cruelty-free and sans palm and mineral oil, parabens, synthetic fragrances and nanoparticles. gemmavendetta.com.au

Emma Blomfield

Coco Chanel was an influential woman. She introduced the world to the little black dress, revolutionised perfume with Chanel No. 5 and built a fashion empire. Pocket Coco Chanel Wisdom is a handy little collection of quotes from the designer’s best moments, all broken up into five useful sections of Style, Women, Herself, Life and Success. Comprising of little pearls like “arrogance is in everything I do,” and “in 1919, I woke up famous,” you’ll be chuckling through 95 pages of sarcasm and wit. Granted, you may not agree with all of Chanel’s musings, but it’s an entertaining insight into the inner workings of a true fashion legend.
Whether you’re renovating, moving, updating or just decluttering, think of Emma Blomfield’s Home as your décor bible. It’s kind of like a home styling guide for dummies, or those who might need a helping hand getting started. Home is full of helpful tips on how to make the most of your space. There are guidelines on how far your couch should be from the wall, what light globes you should be using and how to effectively arrange your pillows. Much better than a ‘buy the first thing you see’ approach, Blomfield’s book instructs readers to thoughtfully plan each room of the house, breaking it down room by room. The result is an essential styling tool that can be used by anyone, from the design-ignorant to the most seasoned decorators.
I’m not much of a baker but this charming book appealed to my inner Betty Crocker. Kawaii Cakes is an adorable recipes collection of Japanese-inspired cakes, cookies, cupcakes and treats. It’s easily the cutest recipe book I’ve ever seen. And while I haven’t read a whole lot of recipe books in my time, you can’t ignore sweets like ‘Unicorn Poop Iced Gem Cookies,’ ‘Lambykins Cookies’ and ‘Sweetheart Cupcakes’. With step-by-step instructions on piping, filling, icing and decorating, it’s a fun (and full on) introduction into the world of edible art. While I skimmed past the pages marked ‘difficult’, Kawaii Cakes has enough recipes to warm even the coldest of hearts, like it did mine.

Everything Now
Mutemath is back, and it looks like this New Orleans band has finally hit its stride. Opening with the recently previewed track, ‘Hit Parade’, frontman Paul Meany tells us it’s “the first song we’ve ever recorded that sounds like what Mutemath set out to sound like from the very beginning.” Admittedly, it’s been a confused ride. From 2011’s bluesy Odd Soul album, to a complete 180-degree flip on the electronica-driven Vitals, they’ve asked fans to stick with them on the journey. If anything, this album brings it all together in one clear vision – and although I’m an Odd Soul-lover, this latest is looking up.

An album with features from Stevie Nicks and A$AP Rocky side by side? It shouldn’t work but it kind of does… It’s all due to LDR’s unique ability to fuse dreamy melancholic pop with a simultaneously modern and retro aesthetic. The only issue with Lust For Life is the age-old question: where are all the hits? The downtempo nature of the album means the listening experience can get a little dreary at times. LDR is best when she’s delivering the kind of fringedwelling, ultra-girly pop on songs like ‘National Anthem’ and ‘Off to the Races’. Thankfully A$AP saves the day, bring some much-needed energy on ‘Groupie Love’ and ‘Summer Bummer’.
Musically, Everything Now sees Arcade Fire revisit their festival-friendly heyday of The Suburbs. It’s the fun, jaunty-pop we’ve come to know them for. But the problem with this album, at least according to most reviewers, is in the lyrics. The album, again similar to The Suburbs, attempts to shine a light on consumerism and vapid social media use through lyrical observation. Unlike The Suburbs, it emerges via trite, obvious clichés. Case in point, the title track: ‘Every time you smile it’s a fake / Daddy how come you’re never around?’. Can it get worse? Yes. It can be punctuated by pan flute riffs.
