Emerging from a crème egg-induced haze, we’re back with our April edition in what will be my very last. After eight wild and wonderful years at the magazine and seven years at the helm, this issue marks the end of an era for yours truly.

Æ With more than 100 issues, thousands of articles, and countless unforgettable moments, Forte has been more than just a job; it’s been a bloody wonderful chunk of my life filled with gigs, interviews, lifelong friendships and a deep-seated love for this vibrant region and its people. To everyone who entrusted me with their stories, a heartfelt thank you.

Now, let’s dive into the heart of this issue with our captivating cover, White Night Ballarat. Set to illuminate the city on 1 June, this event promises a radiant fusion of art and culture, transforming Ballarat into a mesmerising canvas for one unforgettable night. THE SURF COAST TREK RETURNS FOR ITS NINTH YEAR

Renowned Indigenous singer-songwriter Emma Donovan will captivate audiences with her latest show, Songs, Stories, and Soul from Family and Country, coming to the Potato Shed on Saturday, April 13. Fresh from supporting Texan country music sensation Charley Crockett, Emma Donovan is ready to share songs from her upcoming album, Til My Song is Done, due for release on 19 April.

PLAN YOUR STAY IN BALLARAT AS THE CITY LIGHTS UP FOR WHITE NIGHT

After a five-year break, the illuminating spectacular event White Night returns to light up the city of Ballarat.

Æ Taking place as a one-night-only exclusive city takeover on Saturday 1 June 2024, White Night will transform the Ballarat landscape with illuminations, projections, interactive works, music and immersive experiences seeing laneways, buildings, streets, and heritage venues laced in light designs. Snaking around Ballarat’s iconic heritage CBD streetscape, the kaleidoscopic projections dance on the facades of the historic buildings breathing magic into the region’s cold winter air.

Under the creative and artistic direction of renowned major events organisation Accolade.art and Artistic Director and Creative Producer Andrew Walsh, White Night has a proven track record in the region as a vibrant and inclusive culmination and celebration of immersive art and community participation, accessible to all walks of life.

Since their first major city takeover in Melbourne in 2013, as the first city in Australia to host the popular 2002 established Parisian Nuit Blanche festival, Accolade.art now has six White Nights under their belt in partnership with Visit Victoria. On a regional scale, White Night has been rolled out across Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong and Shepparton in previous years, with White Night Geelong 2022 setting the record with 93,000 attendees. The major event acts as a major tourism driver and a source of civic pride for its host cities.

This was the case in 2019 for White Night Ballarat. The standout event not only saw the town painted in colourful projections but also attracted 40,000 visitors to the city and generated $2.8 million in economic impact for the region.

As the annual dusk-til-dawn project program and festival continue to grow and develop, reemerging from a hiatus, 2024 is set to be a blockbuster event. Residents, locals and tourists are invited to explore the streets of Ballarat whilst also being encouraged to sink in what the city and surroundings has to offer.

If you would like to stay in line with the art experience, a stop into the Art Gallery of Ballarat to see Nan Goldin’s prolific photographs in The Ballad of Sexual Dependency in its final days is a great option. Another must-see attraction is the stunning Ballarat Botanic Gardens. The 40-hectare garden located on the shore of Lake Wendouree is picturesque with its remarkable collection of mature trees and marble statues surrounded by colourful bedding displays. Enjoy live music as part of White Night Ballarat on two stages in the CBD with a special program fit for all music lovers.

On the hospitality front, Ballarat is dotted with excellent cafes, restaurants and bars with a number of them partaking in the White Night celebrations. Hop Temple with their rainbow umbrella laneway is always a favourite for craft beers and burgers, and bistro-esque discotheque Renard doubles as a dreamy cocktail bar and disco. Cobb’s Coffee and Fika Coffee Brewers are go-to’s for the caffeinated.

In preparation for the town’s visitation influx, as it is positioned just 90 minutes from metropolitan Melbourne and 60 minutes from Geelong, those attending the dazzling night time experience are encouraged to book accommodation in advance.

Jump on the M8, the A300 or the V/ Line and head out to Ballarat for a weekend of entertainment and city exploration on Saturday 1 June 2024 as the city explodes with lights, sounds and people for White Night. Æ Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, helmed by frontman Frank Carter and guitarist Dean Richardson, emerged onto the music scene with their explosive debut record, Blossom, in 2015, garnering widespread acclaim. Their live performances, brimming with excitement and energy, only served to amplify the fervour surrounding the band.

While there were heavy elements on Blossom, the following Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes records, Modern Ruin in 2017 and End of Suffering in 2019, began to break down the barriers to reveal a softer side to the duo, with 2021’s Sticky (produced by Richardson) solidifying them as a uniquely new wave, post-punk (albeit still punk) rock band, and 2024’s Dark Rainbow proudly serves to push the envelope further. Combining synths, guitars, drum machines and Carter’s instantly recognisable vocals, Dark Rainbow elevates the band further.

“It’s probably more a case of the songs we chose,” begins Dean “Deano” Richardson, speaking to the evolving sound of the band. “We always write a hell of a lot more than we release, and so the sound of Dark Rainbow, and we feel it’s similar to End of Suffering – there’s always been a lot of that music that comes. But at the same time we write a lot of punk rock, [and] we leaned on the punk stuff to make up the bulk of the record.”

“For this one, I don’t know if it’s just ‘cause it’s your fifth album, or if it’s just where you’re at that time, but when we were making those sort of choices, we just seemed to pick a lot more of the new wave. Not something we really grew up on, but it’s definitely in there.”

He acknowledges the influence of their English roots, noting, "We’re not particularly super conscious of where we’re going when we write; it’s just a case of we get in a room, with very much a ‘let’s see what happens, let’s see if we’re even going to make something.’”

“Once we see there’s something to be made, we really hustle and get a bit obsessed with it.”

I push this further – are they literally in a jam room with a band and seeing where the songs go?

“Yeah, until the third record [End of Suffering], we had a strict rule of ‘no demoing’. We would just voice note live. But we did find that that kind of got restrictive, in terms of embellishing the sound, I think you can hear it in the [first two] records. There’s so much guitar constantly, there’s no stopping, that’s all I had in the room to contribute.”

We pivot here, Richardson explaining that they had a studio set up to record and demo once the songs were written, with tools at their disposal. The songs always began with a sound or idea that inspired them, and then they chased it down. Richardson produced Dark Rainbow as well, explaining that while those initial ideas were great and exciting, it’s always important to re-record where needed as things need to be well-tuned and refined, especially once you start to mix, compress and crush the sounds together.

“This time, we recorded as we went but I think we only used a couple of vocals that we felt attached to, and quite a few synths. Obviously, they’re DI’d and stuff. Anything mic’d up got re-recorded pretty much.”

Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes have a backing band, but the writing and demoing process is purely Richardson and Carter, explaining he’d slowly amassed enough one shot samples of various drummers to assemble a MIDI kit for demoing – that sounded dangerously good.

“Sometimes it sounds a bit too cool, and I’m like ‘Do we need a drummer?’” he laughs.

“But no, then we went to a studio and recorded drums and that’s when we move from writing into like ‘Okay we’re making a record here.’ And then our bass player will come and record, we’ve got a new guitarist from the last few years, [it was the] first time he recorded with us as well. Quite a lot of us are on it in the end.”

With a wealth of material to choose from, the selection process for the album's tracks becomes a critical juncture. Richardson explains, "On this one, it was pretty open-ended, we had nothing booked and we had no external pressures, so we really tried to think not too far ahead until we had a lot of songs."

Freed from external pressures, the band allowed themselves the luxury of exploring numerous musical avenues before honing in on the cohesive sound of Dark Rainbow

“There’s a whole other album that could’ve come out,” he laughs. “We wrote an album that has a certain sound and there was a debate at one point about whether we should stop or carry on. We got to something like 30-something songs, demoed to a point that they’re finished… and a gazillion half ideas.”

“So with this one, when we’d written that second [idea], we’d just started to become really attached to what was to become Dark Rainbow.”

Fuelled by her innate talent and nurtured by years of dedication, Astrid started singing lessons in year four and continued to hone her craft ever since.

Now teaming up with the exceptionally talented Oscar Rose, Astrid has now formed the Astrid Armstrong Duo, a dynamic collaboration that fuses soul, funk, R&B, and pop into an irresistible sonic tapestry. Their partnership blossomed from a chance encounter, with Oscar’s unique musical flair complementing Astrid’s soulful vocals in perfect harmony. “It’s so much fun working with him,” Astrid says. “He’s been a mentor to me in many ways, with his incredible talent and ear for music.”

The Pierce Brothers have carved a reputation for themselves as purveyors of electrifying live performances brimming with vigour, passion, and flair, establishing themselves as a hallmark of the Melbourne music scene.

Æ From their humble beginnings as Bourke Street buskers in 2011, Jack and Pat Pierce have honed their captivating stage presence and cultivated a connection with audiences that transcends boundaries.

Unlike many street performers, the Pierce Brothers have seamlessly translated the raw, unfiltered energy of busking onto larger stages, captivating audiences far beyond their Melbourne origins. "From my busking days to now, there have been heaps of incremental changes that have turned us into the band that we are today," Jack Pierce explains. "We've always been a band that evolves with the songs we write, and now we have WAY too many instruments on stage."

Having mastered the art of exploration, experimentation, and livewire performances, their latest musical endeavour, Everything Is Bigger Than Me, marks a significant milestone in their artistic journey.

This album, their third studio venture, not only underscores the Melbourne-based twins' growth as musicians and storytellers but also marks a significant leap in their creative journey. Having taken the reins of production for the first time, alongside Phil Threlfall (Illy, Bliss n Eso, Owl Eyes), Jack and Pat Pierce navigate new waters, steering their sound into uncharted territories while weaving narratives of love, loss, and the human experience.

“We did our best to lean more into our indie-folk inspirations, and always tried to harken back to the way that we perform live,” Jack Pierce explains. “It was also recorded at my home studio, which was also a first for us! Having said that, this gave us a lot of freedom to explore the songs as much as we could!”

"We did more pre-production than we usually do," Jack adds, "and in that exploration of each song, we found new ideas that we would never have had the time to explore if we’d have just rehearsed them live, and then just gone guns blazing into a studio.” This meticulous approach to the recording process allowed them to delve deeper into each song, resulting in a richer and more layered sound and more ambitious tracks.

From infectious folk toe-tappers like ‘Bottle’ to haunting tracks like ‘Wilder’, which features Philadelphia-based twins LULLANAS, the Pierce Brothers are unafraid to explore and expand their sonic palette while staying true to the earnest lyricism and harmonious vocals that fans have come to adore. Rustic charm meets mass singalong potential in ‘Left You On Read’, while tracks like ‘Blood’ and ‘White Dress’ delve into themes of family, love, and introspection. With its soaring chorus and introspective lyrics, ‘Hollow’ stands out as a focus track, capturing the essence of their storytelling prowess. As Jack reflects on the song, "This was probably the saddest track of the record. We love to blend both melancholy and upbeat energy in our songs. It's an outlier [in terms of theme],” he explains, “but we just really enjoyed the storytelling and the picture that painted, and we took inspiration from Paul Kelly in that way." Their evolution as artists, both personally and musically, since their debut EP The Night Tree , is palpable in this album. As Jack reminisces, "Listening back to The Night Tree, it's hard to believe it's already 10 years old.

“I'm really proud of most of the songs on that and would love to revisit some of the songs that I don't think we gave enough time to. This new album represents us backing ourselves a little bit more, with lessons that we've learned from the incredible people we've worked with over the years, both writing and producing music.”

Despite the challenges they faced on their hugely successful European headline tour, including a hospital visit, lost voices, cancelled shows, a stolen credit card and a studio disaster back home, the Pierce Brothers remain resilient and determined to share their music with audiences around the world.

Having kicked off their extensive Australian tour at the esteemed Bluesfest, they look forward to bringing their new album to life on stage. "This will be our most extensive tour since 2019," Jack says. "The good thing about this year’s tour is that for the most part it’s weekend on/ weekend off. This was so I didn’t miss too many weekends with my young kids, but it certainly pushed the dates out a long way, because we really wanted to do that big regional run like we used to!”

Æ “Get this much money and buy all the classical music you can find downtown,” were the words of director Stanley Kubrick when building the intense moments of the mind-melting 2001: A Space Odyssey . The careful use of Richard Strauss’s tone poem ‘Also Sprach Zarathustra’ scored the crescendoed embryonic space scene, cementing it as a cultural moment that lives on in cinema history whilst being heavily referenced in pop culture.

Just last year we saw it adapted in the realm of Barbie World and in February this year, pop-punk legends Blink-182 dramatically entered the stage each night of their fifteen-show tour to the orchestral piece.

Kubrick is not the only director to use this transformative formula to heighten scenes, enhance characters and world-build.

‘The Imperial March’ defined the formidable villain, Darth Vader, and Steven Spielberg built the hero narrative around Indiana Jones through John Williams' composition of ‘The Raiders March’. Williams also sonically transported audiences into the magical world of Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, and Howard Shore took us on a journey through Middle Earth scoring The Lord of The Rings trilogy.

Now these iconic musical moments are being brought to the stage by the Geelong Symphony Orchestra in concert, Music From The Movies

Taking place at Costa Hall on Saturday 11 May, Music From The Movies sees the GSO perform a stacked program of music themes from the aforementioned 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, The Lord of The Rings trilogy, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, along with pieces from Schindler’s List, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Mission, The King’s Speech, and Zorba the Greek

“We have selected themes that have made an impact in pop culture and have become timeless. Whether you have seen the movie or not, you know Beethoven: Symphony No.7 or have heard the Star Wars theme. We wanted things that were really satisfying to the players to play,” says Music Director and GSO President, Wendy Galloway. Intending to carry the audience into the screen through score, Music From The Movies enlists 60 talented musicians under the direction and mentorship of internationally renowned conductor Mario Dobernig. With Susan Pierotti in the Concert Master seat and well-known Australian opera singer and entertainer Sally-Anne Russell as the presenter, the GSO aims to prove their place as a top-tier symphony orchestra.

“Geelong Symphony Orchestra is known for our high reputation across performances and our talented players, mainly local players. About 70% of our players are local but we did have to bring in a few imports from Melbourne,” explains Galloway.

Consisting of teachers, doctors and engineers, GSO members are all involved not only because they are incredibly talented with their instrument, but because they are passionate about playing with Galloway commenting that “they all jumped at the opportunity to play together”.

Established in 2016 as Galloway’s brain-child, the Geelong Symphony Orchestra’s track record is solid, taking on waltzes and orchestral show pieces from Johann Strauss II, Franz Lehár, Brahms and Puccini in Vienna - City of Dreams, mastering Sibelius Finlandia for Titans, and tackling Elga’s Enigma

In Music From The Movies, audiences need not have a classical ear. As a 3 pm matinee session, the two-hour concert - including an interval - is accessible to all walks of life; symphony orchestra enthusiasts, classical music novices, film lovers, and families.

“We aim to have all of our events as early evening or a 3 pm start to make sure it is accessible to everyone. We try to keep it very audience friendly - if it is fully serious classical music you can turn people off but music stays famous for a reason. People are getting more excited about symphonic orchestras and there has been a buzz about our Geelong Symphony Orchestra with strong audiences. Music From The Films is a good starting point for new audiences,” comments Galloway. Aiming to run three shows per year, the end of the year sees the orchestra take on Mozart and Beethoven in Heroica on Saturday, 26 October from 5 pm at Costa Hall with further programming sorted for 2025.

“There’s certainly a desire with the players and with the audience for more shows so we'll keep filling the need as long as we can!”

Æ Hailing from the coastal shores of Surf Coast / Naarm, blyss has emerged as one seriously dynamic force in the music scene, blending nostalgia with modernity to craft a sound uniquely their own. Comprised of Nick, Tristan, Nathan, and Bill, the four-piece band combines their diverse influences to create music that is as energetic as it is emotive.

Reflecting on blyss’ sound, guitarist Nathan Mossop shares, “The music that we make feels super energetic and almost nostalgic to us. Whether it’s an emotional section of a song or straight-up pub energy, we make sure that there’s a feeling attached to all the parts.

“As a four-piece band, we have such different influences and I think they’ve melted together nicely. We all love heavy shit, yet we all love a great pop song and hopefully, people will get behind our version of whatever that means to us.”

Drawing inspiration from a range of genres, blyss infuses their music with elements of heavy rock and pop sensibilities, creating a sound that resonates with audiences, especially with the release of their first two singles: the stadium-sized nostalgic ‘Feel It All’ and heavy, hardcore-influenced ‘Stereo Heart’.

Transitioning from their previous moniker, The Vainz, to blyss has allowed the band to explore new creative avenues and define their musical identity. Nathan reflects, “Nowadays in blyss, it’s all about the stuff that comes collaboratively, naturally and somewhat quickly.”

Having cut their teeth at iconic venues such as Lead Beater Hotel in Melbourne, Barwon Club Geelong, Torquay Hotel, and Cherry Bar over the last 12 months alone, blyss is no stranger to the stage. On Sunday, April 21, blyss will grace the stage at the renowned Do The Pop Festival, a celebration of rock 'n' roll culture and a platform for championing local talent in Port Campbell. With over 30 bands across two days, this festival is a milestone for the band, promising an unrelenting barrage of sonic brilliance for all rock enthusiasts.

Looking ahead, blyss is eager to continue sharing their music with the world, with more new music to come. Nathan teases, “Whether it’s an EP or an album, you’ll be getting more craziness, more solos, more singalongs, more energy – all of it.”

A SMALL TOWN HEROINE TAKING CENTRE STAGE

Æ As the sun sets over Geelong’s picturesque Mt Duneed Estate this April, music lovers are in for a treat as they gather for a memorable day on the green. As platinum-selling sensation Chris Isaak headlines A Day on the Green, another luminary prepares to grace the stage: the inimitable Ella Hooper.

Renowned for her indelible mark on the Australian music scene, Hooper’s upcoming performance promises to be a poignant intersection of past triumphs and future aspirations. With the weight of anticipation hanging in the air, Hooper reflects on the magnitude of the moment. “I’m good!” she exclaims, her voice betraying a hint of exhaustion tempered by excitement. “It’s been a big start to the year so it’s all good, but I’m just going fast, fast, fast.”

As she prepares to share the stage with Chris Isaak, Hooper’s admiration for the legendary crooner is palpable. “I remember seeing... a film clip when I was a little kid of Chris Isaak, it was probably ‘Wicked Game’ where he walking along the beach with Helena Christensen,” she reminisces. “And I thought, ‘Wow, that’s the coolest. That’s the coolest guy singing the coolest song’ so I can’t quite believe it.” For Hooper, the allure of events like A Day on the Green lies in their ability to transport audiences to a realm of serenity and splendour. “I’m a huge fan of A Day on the Green,” she enthuses. “My dream gig always involves a really nice environment... sipping a nice wine and listening to iconic, incredible, classic music, so this is actually my dream gig.”

Yet amidst the grandeur of outdoor venues, Hooper remains grounded, attuned to the nuances of her craft. “We think about what songs work best in that format and what songs people going to want to hear before they hear a lot of other incredible music,” she explains.

With her upcoming performance, where she’ll perform with just two others on stage, Hooper plans to introduce new elements to her set, including the addition of a violin. “It’s going to be a fun touch to our set,” she shares. “So there’ll be some fiddles and keys, electric guitar and maybe some mandolin... it’s a bit of a folk rock sort of mix.”

Hooper’s presence adds an extra layer of excitement to the already star-studded lineup, with her journey in the music industry being nothing short of extraordinary. Bursting onto the scene as a teenager, Hooper quickly made her mark with Killing Heidi, scoring a number one single on her 17th birthday and becoming the first woman to be awarded APRA’s Songwriter of the Year at just 18. Her debut album, Reflector, soared to the top of the charts, winning four ARIA Awards and achieving platinum status multiple times over.

But Hooper’s story doesn’t stop there. After three successful albums with Killing Heidi, she embarked on a solo career, showcasing her deeply personal songwriting with her latest album, Small Town Temple

Written in her hometown of Violet Town, the album continues to resonate deeply with listeners, much to Hooper’s amazement and gratitude. “To have something so personal connect as it has is beyond words; it’s so, so special to me,” she says, acknowledging the paradoxical universality of personal narratives. The album, lauded for its intimate storytelling and acoustic warmth, marks a significant departure from her previous work, delving into themes of family, community, and self-discovery. Songs like the title track, ‘Long Gully Road’, and ‘Grow Wild’ stand out as personal anthems, each encapsulating different facets of Hooper’s experiences and relationships. These tracks not only underscore the album’s emotional landscape but also signal a new chapter in her solo career, characterised by a more organic, acoustic-driven sound. “It’s been about moving into more traditional instrumentation,” Hooper explains, “I’m going to try and keep going in that direction and I’m hoping to get horns and strings and things like that in there as well.”

As she contemplates the evolution of her solo career, Hooper acknowledges the challenges of carving out her own path. “Sometimes when you are an artist, and your sound and your very own voice is your product... you’re quite sensitive to the ups and downs of it,” she muses. “But over all these years, I’m really lucky to have had such a long, bloody career where I’ve learned to separate myself from it; to draw the line between the real, real me and the band me.

Yet amidst the highs and lows, Hooper finds solace and fulfillment in the art of storytelling through music. “My job as a songwriter is to keep an eye on the inner world and give it a voice,” she reflects. “But then as someone who wants to share it... what am I doing with it?”

As she looks ahead to her upcoming performances with Chris Isaak and James Taylor later this month, Hooper remains grounded, focused on the present moment and the opportunity to connect with audiences through her music. “Just make sure everyone comes down,” she laughs. “This is definitely not one not to miss.”

HOW PLATFORM ARTS LEADS ARTS EXPERIENCES

Æ Car park performative takeovers; marine biologists collaborating with artists; sound tours with evening swims at Eastern Beach; and the former magistrate court packed with hay bales for a spoken word-slash-archery act: Platform Arts is pushing the boundaries of art inside and outside of their Old Courthouse walls. Strength to strength, the not-for-profit arts organisation has been raising the profile of experimental and contemporary art in the Geelong region through community collaboration, engaging in wider dialogue on issues that matter, building meaningful connections with sector leaders, and presenting powerful, thought-provoking works. Executive Director Ilana Russell explains, “It has been a delight to grow the reach of Platform Arts programming and program partners. In the last couple of years, we’ve partnered with universities, international arts festivals, government bodies and experimental theatre companies to deliver exciting works to the region that challenge the way that we, as audiences, think.”

“I was waterbombed in a shopping trolley as part of a performance work that challenged assumptions about youth. The Director turned the burning of Weetbix onstage into a conversation about the comparably delicate practices of the arts industry and the death industry. We’re building a program where art leads and comments on complex constructs.”

To help bring all of these pieces of the Platform puzzle together, the organisation has introduced thematics into their programming, blanketing their gallery, performance and public program under an overarching theme. Anchored by the considered curation of a major exhibition and supported by performances, talks, public events and publications, Platform’s 2024 program responds to issues and conversations that are urgent in our current societal climate.

“It’s incredibly exciting to create arts experiences that connect and unravel over time, where audiences are invited to gather and respond to each subsequent event within that theme. The arts are as much about providing alternative conceptual means to process—together—our changing world,” Russell says.

This strategic choice enables Platform to align with Geelong's expectations of contemporary art experiences. From engaging with higher calibre artists to bringing world-class works to their stage and gallery walls, Platform Arts is focused on elevating its artistic offering.

“Under this new model, we have opened our outreach to engage an amazing cohort of artists, researchers and disrupters to respond to vital environmental and social issues. Our [most recent] exhibition engaged fifteen artists, such as national changemakers Georgia Nowak, James Geurts, and Jazz Money, whose work all responds in some capacity to a shared vision and concept,” says Russell.

The arts organisation recently showcased CURRENTS, an exhibition exploring the human relationship with water. The exhibition component saw the intersection of artists across disciplines contemplating tides, migration, ecosystems, climate change, saturation, sustenance and hydration. On the public program front, Platform Arts partnered with Barwon Water to deliver off-site events, including a water cycle meditation and a guided walk at Upper Stony Creek Reservoir.

“The uniqueness of the CURRENTS exhibition and the cross-section of artists involved has opened up the exploration of art practice across different mediums and industries. Scientists, researchers and artists have become intrinsically interconnected throughout this process and we have connected with spaces outside of our building.”

Their second theme, fairy, is set to kick off on Saturday, 6 April, running until Friday, 17 May. The project will explore ‘fairies’ and queer presences, engaging 13 artists to think through and creatively respond to the possibilities and limitations of “thinking of queerness as a fairy.”

As supported by the Midsumma Regional Activation Fund, fairy sees collaboration with the LGBTQIA+ community of Geelong. For the opening event, catering will be provided by cheese train aficionados, Splatters. In a first for the organisation, following the recent removal of its dry zone designation, Platform Arts will also include the service of alcohol, partnering with local regional allies, Great Ocean Road Gin.

Additionally, fairy strengthens the organisation's relationship with the Geelong Pride Film Festival. The festival program launched at Platform Arts in March, followed by screenings and Q&As in their theatre on Saturday, 20 April. Features include the story of an 87-year-old carriage-diving legend in Isla’s Way, alongside the AFLW documentary Equal the Contest. The festival also boasts the Australian premiere of Masquerades of Research I and II by Irishbased artist Padraig Robinson.

“We’re excited to partner with Geelong Pride Film Festival to share the important stories from the community and further contribute to the LGBTQIA+ conversation. We’re thrilled to build on our longstanding relationship with the festival by becoming a more significant program supporter each year.”

BUILDING BETTER PSYCHOLOGY OUTCOMES

Æ “Music industry faces mental health 'crisis' as COVID-19 takes toll on vulnerable workers” reads a 2021 headline from The ABC. “‘Startling Findings’ Uncovered In Music Industry Wellbeing Survey” continued the thread in 2022 as published by The Music citing research from the firstever music industry mental health and wellbeing survey conducted by Support Act.

That research reported statistics such as 66% of participants reported high to very high levels of psychological distress, 59% of participants had experiences suicidal thoughts at a staggering 4.5 times the proportion of the general population, and 35% reported having a current mental health condition.

Whilst these findings are specific to the music industry, mental health is not an industry isolated issue within Australia. Too many people are on waitlists for mental health support, while many find that their first experience with a psychologist isn’t the right fit leading to a trial-and-error approach to finding the right psychologist for them. This leads to people feeling less hopeful that there is effective support that will make them feel happier and confident in their lives.

On the Geelong front, psychologist Dr Nathan Castle is trying to solve this issue through his practice, Psychology Outcomes. Psychology Outcomes is the first Precision Mental Healthcare Service in Australia and the first clinic to be able to scientifically find the most effective psychologist for every client that calls.

Scientific matching shows promise to provide double the mental health results for every client needing support. Psychology Outcomes partnered with an innovative tech company, Outcome Referrals, to bring scientific matching to Australia in 2021. Since that time, Psychology Outcomes has not only published their results in articles to demonstrate the effectiveness but also published the clinic results on the front page of their website so clients interested in seeking support can review them first before booking a session.

This strategy has led clients to call Psychology Outcomes directly and led them to feel more confident that they will get a psychologist who is committed to helping them achieve the best results.

A recent recipient of the TAC Value-based Healthcare Innovation Grant, Psychology Outcomes is changing the face of health care and finding the right psychologist for the right client every time.

This method is attracting psychology clinics across Australia to join the Precision Mental Health Network in an attempt to improve recovery from mental health nationally. Innovative clinics such as Lawson Clinical Psychology, Launch Psychology, ACT of Living, Solid Rock Psychology, Rhythm Psychology, Strength Psychology and Goals Psychology have joined the network in an effort to get better results for clients struggling with mental health issues. Through scientific matching, the network aims to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of private psychology organisations treating chronic pain, trauma and mental health.

This move to turn the traditional mental health model on its head comes from the belief that therapy can be done better. Too many Australians have experienced seeing a psychologist that simply wasn’t the right fit and know they could have gotten better results.

Through the roll out of the Precision Mental Health Network, this new scientific matching method allows Psychology Outcomes to create a positive impact to Geelong locals, whilst also influencing highly effective treatments to each state to help clients more than ever.

Dr Castle notes that research has shown this innovative scientific matching approach doubles the results of mental health treatment. The best part is that clients don’t have to do anything different and Psychologists don’t need to do anything different either. Asking for more from Psychologists is unlikely to lead to better treatment results across Australia as they are often already overworked and, in some cases, burnt out.

It is actually more simple to identify which clients Psychologists are most effective with and match clients to them. Unsurprisingly, this leads to better care, more confident clients and more fulfilled Psychologists. Importantly, it allows for the reduction of the trial and error of finding the right psychologist, in turn enabling people to feel better faster, building confidence to manage their own mental health and reducing the length of costly ongoing care.

Within Psychology Outcomes alone, scientific matching is seeing amazing results. With a team of seven psychologists strong and specialising in trauma, anxiety, depression, emotional difficulties, OCD, panic attacks and substance use, the clinic is seeing an overall client reliable improvement outcome of 76%. These results are the type of outcomes that can change clients lives and family as well as friends notice.

ART ON THE PIER

If you love art but find galleries to be a little too stuffy, take a stroll outside at Art on the Pier. For the fourth year running, the Queenscliff Pier has been transformed into the country’s largest outdoor art exhibition. More than 150 artworks have been installed, with pieces printed on a mix of aluminium panels and canvas and placed between two sheets of polycarbonate plastic to showcase the Queenscliff Art Prize.

NAN GOLDIN

It’s not quite New York but it’s a slice of the Big Apple at this new exhibition celebrating legendary photographer Nancy ‘Nan’ Goldin. Nan began documenting the city’s postpunk, new-wave scene in the late ’70s/early ’80s, which would form her acclaimed slideshow, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency. Goldin refers to this as her public diary. A series of music/art shows called Art Late will occur throughout its duration, including The Belair Lip Bombs on April 13.

THE RECIPROCAL EYE

In The Reciprocal Eye, Clive Murray-White and Michelle Caithness pay homage to traditional Western art practices while exploring the intimacy of collaboration and the depths of human experience through intellectual curiosity and open dialogue. Murray draws upon the Italian style of Non-Finito, a discipline that leaves part of the sculpture in its raw state. Caithness, meanwhile, utilises paper and canvas to explore forms through the manipulation of texture, light and colour.

Local artist Kim Lowe grew up on a 50-acre bush block in Marong. She chose to work in the monochrome medium as a way to allow the viewer to see and connect with her artwork without the distraction of colour, welcoming people to take a peek at her childhood memories through patterns of nature, native flora and fauna, iconic buildings and moments in time. The exhibition will also feature works from participants of her weekly Art for Wellbeing class, 2inspire Creatives.

This is ground control to Major Tom, commencing the countdown to the end of this Davie Bowie exhibition. With an estimated 100+ million album sales, Bowie is widely regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Ballarat-based artist Christopher Risk is a big fan. So big, he created a series of works celebrating the iconic looks and personas of the late, great chameleon of rock.

ALPHA WOLF

Half Living Things

Æ Following the landmark success of Alpha Wolf’s first album with vocalist Lochie Keogh, A Quiet Place To Die (AQPTD), many weren’t expecting the group to drastically change their sound. Why would they? AQPTD not only demonstrated that the group had discovered a winning formula; it also more or less trademarked the use of pitch-shifters amongst modern-day metal, characterised by high-pitched, squealing guitar riffs and brutal, open breakdowns. This signature sound not only became synonymous with the now Melbourne-based outfits’ sound but also exerted a considerable influence on the rest of their peers.

When the album cover of Half Living Things was released, showcasing an illustration of a hooded figure holding a boom-box in a graffiti-laden landscape, many fans were pleasantly surprised to find that they were in for something new – or should I say nü.

This didn’t come as a shock to everyone. Over the last few years, nü metal has made a massive comeback in the modern-day metal scene, and Alpha Wolf has been a band that embraced the Y2K aesthetic long before its recent resurgence. So, in a way, it felt like a natural progression for the group.

Indeed, it was. While many other acts have heavily leaned into the sounds of their childhood influences, Alpha Wolf’s third effort has taken a 20-year-old genre and made it entirely their own, showcasing their trademark intensity in a new light. It’s still the Alpha Wolf that we know and love, but infinitely more demented and technical than ever before.

‘Double-Edge Demise’ sees Keogh count in a manic breakdown with snarled “Tik, Toks”; ‘Pretty Boy’ brings in huge downtuned riffs, ravaged gutturals and grunge-infused cleans; while ‘Mangekyō’ delivers breakdowns that most would reserve for their album’s defining moment in its opening 20 seconds. ‘A Terrible Day For Rain’ delivers feelings of surging anxiety, with its stomping rhythms, chugging riffs, and eerie programming making it feel as if you’re trapped in a room with your four biggest fears surrounding you from every angle.

It’s unbridled, seething anger at its finest – the kind of unrestrained aggression that many wouldn’t have encountered since they first heard Slipknot’s Iowa. Yet, it manages to surpass even that benchmark, both lyrically and musically.

I know, I know, that statement probably made a few ‘maggots’ out there ready for war, but it’s not one made lightly – Half Living Things is genuinely that unhinged. It’s a welcome changeup for the Melbourne-based outfit who have proven yet again, that they are the toughest band in Aus metal at the moment.

If you don’t believe that statement, it’s because you haven’t heard Half Living Things yet.

BEANS Boots N Cats

Æ Beans may well be the only modern ‘rock’ act that immediately falls into classic rock territory. This assertion might appear ambitious, given the fact that they are only three albums deep and less than a decade into their tenure. But on Boots N Cats, Beans have well and truly grown into their velvet flares, delivering an experimental album that feels like deep cuts straight out of the 60s and 70s psychedelic rock explosion.

An intricate, percussion-driven release that’s instrumental at heart, Boots N Cats sees Beans meld elements of psych rock, groove, blues and more. Honestly, if I had to list every style that the group dabbles with throughout this release, I’d be listing more genres than the CD section at JB Hi-Fi.

The aptly titled opener ‘Groove’ toys with elements of neo-psych and kraut rock, while also maintaining motorik krautrock rhythms. ‘Kookaburra’ combines Deep Purple grandeur with early Status Quoinfused psychedelia, while ‘Calling’ maintains a sneaky swagger in its rhythms – evoking the imagery of a cat burglar in a 60s movie while listening to it.

Other moments see the group experiment with unrelenting drum fills (‘One To Four’, ‘Silhouette’), influences of Zamrock fusion (‘Siamese Blundstone’), and melancholic dissonance (‘Haunted’, ‘Dreaming Daisy’).

Boots N Cats really is, from beginning to end, a trip, and one that’ll continue to firmly distinguish Beans’ incomparable flavour amongst the modern psych-rock scene.

OIKS

Æ Among early triple j listeners and the Aussie pub-rock circuit of the 90s, Jebediah are regarded as punk-rock royalty. And rightfully so. The group consistently maintained an impressive live show, and their songwriting has always been a cut above the rest, giving their early releases a longevity that many other acts from the same era struggled to attain.

Despite the broadening of their fan base over three decades, Jebediah has remained true to their origins, with almost every album under their belt channelling the same sticky floor, dingy pub-rock energy that the group cut their teeth on.

On their latest release OIKS , Jebediah continues to push their iconic punk rock trajectory, although this time around, they try their hand at something new. ‘Bad For You’ toys with reverb-laden shoegaze crescendos while ‘Gum Up The Bearing’ impressively adds the distinction of brass without ever straying into ska-punk territory. Both ‘Rubberman’ and ‘Aqua-Lung’ dabble in Radiohead-inspired psych-drone.

It’s equal parts experimental and familiar, propelling Jebediah’s enduring vision while also sticking true to their punkrock roots that we all fell in love with in the 90s. Sure, it may not be as disenchanted as the group’s earlier material, but after almost 30 years, you’d be damn well hoping that Kevin Mitchell wasn’t writing with the same level of teen angst that he was in his early twenties.

KHRUANGBIN

A LA SALA

Æ In the realm of instrumental neopsych, Khruangbin undeniably reign as leaders. Their first two releases, The Universe Smiles Upon You and Con Todo El Mundo, stood as giants within the modern psych scene, establishing the Texanbased trio’s meticulous craftsmanship and predominantly instrumental, Latin-inspired melodies as outliers among their peers.

However, subsequent releases such as Mordechai and Ali fell somewhat short, with the group trading their fluid, jam-like nature for a more minimalist approach that lacked the genre-bending magic of earlier work like ‘Lady and Man’ and ‘People Everywhere’.

Their latest studio album, A LA SALA, is a follow-up that’s released under immense expectation. While it does undoubtedly showcase the tight interplay and alluring marriage of virtuosity and psych-pop that the group have become renowned for, it once again lacks the distinct fluidity, genre progression, and unpredictability that characterised their earlier material.

Technically, Khruangbin will never disappoint. Their unmatched musical prowess is hard to criticise, and listeners will undoubtedly still find solace in the group’s signature, easy-listening, wistful ambience in tracks like ‘Ada Jean,’ ‘Pon Pón,’ and ‘Hold Me Up (Thank You).’

But for the most part, A LA SALA tends to lean too heavily into its subtleties, leaving many songs feeling somewhat lacklustre, rudimentary and aimless compared to the group’s previous work.

As a whole, A LA SALA might be better described as a cinematic score rather than the eagerly awaited sequel longed for by fans.

NORTHLANE Mirror’s Edge

Æ While it marked their most commercially successful release, 2022’s Obsidian nearly brought Northlane to the brink of collapse. Tensions surged, communication completely broke down, and it seemed like the longtime frontrunners of Aus djent metal were all set to self-implode at any moment.

Enter Mirror’s Edge , an EP that is somewhat of a miracle for the group, who seem to have re-found themselves and their appreciation for music through this release

Mirror’s Edge is a raw and unflinching body of work that brings the group back to basics. Sure, with the level of technicality that Northlane showcase on each release, their sound will never be described as ‘basic’ by definition. Yet there’s just something so perfectly rough and unfinished about this EP that feels so much like a group in its infancy during the Myspace era.

‘Afterimage’ packs equal parts grunt and groove through its jagged riffs and sludgy bass tones, ‘Miasma’ utilises off-kilter vocal cadences, drilling chugs and a powerhouse guest spot from Winston McCall, while ‘Let Me Disappear’ ties in tech-heavy synth breakdowns reminiscent of ‘HTML Rulez d00d’ era of The Devil Wears Prada.

For the first time in years, Northlane isn’t trying to fit a mould. They’re doing what works for them, and as a result, they’ve rediscovered the authenticity and individualism that their earlier material was heralded for.

Mirror’s Edge promises to translate in their live sets and evoke nostalgia for their earlier, intimate club shows.

Times have been a touch crazy for the dashing Richard Hannay. He finds himself in the middle of a murder, an espionage scandal and newfound love – all in one day. Presented by Synchronicity, this production features a crew of seven taking on more than thirty characters.

It was love at first sight. Opposite the beach and heaps of parking, what more could you want? They discovered the business was for sale, snagged it, and in late 2022, they unlocked the doors after a stunning revamp, making it a little brighter and more welcoming just two days post-Christmas.

Since then, Dawn Cafe has become a hit with the Collendina community. People were craving something fresh and new, and Dawn delivered.

Here, the Dawn crew is all about giving you top-notch service with a smile. They want you to kick back, put your feet up, and let them handle your caffeine and baked goods cravings.

Now, let’s talk food. If you’re after the ultimate egg and bacon roll this side of the coast, Dawn’s got your back. And if that’s not your jam, no worries. They’ve got a lineup that’ll make your taste buds dance, from crunchy granola and French toast to sautéed greens and the crowd-pleaser, avo on toast.

Their menu boasts a market fruits platter, perfect for sharing, complete with seasonal fruits, berries, and their homemade granola on the side. Ideal for a post-beach swim snack.

MEET ME AT MARY’S

Æ If you haven’t paid a visit to Meet Me at Mary’s, you’re seriously missing out.

Originally an industrial warehouse, the building has undergone a magnificent transformation into a contemporary dining space. Owner and designer, Donna Flanders, has preserved the building’s charming features – think concrete floors, high ceilings, and brick walls. The pièce de résistance? The striking bluetiled bar that runs through the centre, set against tan booths lining the walls.

Since its opening, Mary’s has become a go-to destination for weddings, private functions, and, of course, dining. And speaking of dining, it’s an experience not to be missed, especially with the arrival of their new Executive Chef, Anthony Hammel, and Head Chef, Jing Wei Wong.

Together, they’ve crafted a menu that’s truly exceptional, best enjoyed through their ‘Feed Me’ Banquet Menu. This culinary journey blends Eastern and Western cuisine, highlighting fresh seasonal produce with a selection of small and large dishes, all meant for sharing.

What’s exciting is how the menu evolves and changes with the seasons. The chefs let nature dictate their ingredients, resulting in dishes like Lamb Shoulder, Bird Rock Farm Porterhouse, and Roasted Cauliflower with almonds and Harissa, all designed for communal enjoyment.

The drinks menu is equally impressive, featuring a wide array of local and imported spirits, wines, and beers. Classic cocktails like the espresso martini and bloody mary sit alongside house specialties like the vanilla French and poison arrow – definitely worth a try.
