Artists A B B E M AY Abbe May is one of Australia’s most respected and exciting songwriters and vocalists. Her live performances are charismatic, intense and provocative. The impressive multi-instrumentalist artist has an ever growing audience and catalogue of songs about love and lust that could almost be romantic if it weren’t for the vitriol. May spent her late teens and early twenties in Australia’s sleaziest rock venues, busted up studios and unreliable tour vans in various solo and band incarnations. With sly humour, Abbe graduated from her critically acclaimed early explorations of rock and blues to become a guitar-slinging, beat bouncing goddess with an atmospheric cocktail of sexy indie RnB, blues, voodoo and electronica. ARIA Best Female Artist nominee, May is currently writing and producing her highly anticipated sixth album.

Artists ALICE IVY Raised on the Victorian surf coast, the daughter of German migrants, Annika Schmarsel aka Alice Ivy, recalls a childhood coloured by extensive travel in a vibrant and multilingual household. Her first foray into music, an ill-fated tryst with the clarinet, was swapped for guitar before Annika began beat-making inspired by the likes of The Avalanches, J Dilla and Bonobo. As member of all-female soul outfit Sweethearts, in her late teens Annika twice toured Europe performing at the Poretta Soul Festival, Italy and Montreux Jazz Festival, Switzerland alongside luminaries of the genre ranging from Al Green through to Mark Ronson. In the mere twelve months since founding electro-soul project Alice Ivy, she’s released a trio of singles, earned support slots for Banoffee and Remi and completed a UK and European tour. ‘Touch’, the first single from her forthcoming debut album is a sophisticated arrangement that conjures a “Through The Looking-Glass”-esque dreamscape, layering original field recordings from the streets of Melbourne with warm guitar lines, sampled strings, brass and a manipulated feature vocal from London-based blues singer Georgia Van Etten. Playing: Friday - The Pavilion - 10:45pm
ALPINE Alpine are six friends from Melbourne who make bold, shimmering, sophisticated pop music. It’s been three years since Alpine released their debut album. Three years filled with playing live to a growing world-wide fan-base, staring out of tour van windows, long-haul flights, saving up, moving in, breaking up, awkward dates and tipsy late nights in different parts of the world. The unexpected wonder of early twenties life was at the heart of the band’s debut and truly they lived every moment. The songs on Alpine’s sophomore album Yuck see the band explore their “yuck” reactions to “first world problems”; awkward dates, a distaste for romance, lust when lust was lost, plastic vanity, foolish attraction and ego against egos. The album’s title is lifted from a line in lead single Foolish, which in essence embodies so many of the experiences that inspired the lyrics on the record. “A lot of the songs were all in response to an awkward situation; heartbreak, a gross dinner, a bad date, bad manners, fear and learning how to move on from it all so that it’s never yucky again,” comments Lou James, one of the band’s two lead vocalists, when quizzed on the unusual title. “[the word
Yuck] captures that feeling of disdain you have toward yourself when you make a mistake, especially a sexual mistake. Kissing the wrong person, someone you shouldn’t. It feels wrong. It’s a body quiver,” elaborates Phoebe Baker. Musically, inspiration came from the desire to push the ‘pop’ genre to new and often weird places. “Most of the music of the songs came from a textural or harmonic idea that I was curious about. I wanted to see if certain things would work in a pop song,” comments Christian O’Brien, Guitarist and first time coproducer of the album. Shared experiences and what seems to be a collective self-awakening has led to the band being more in tune with one another, allowing them to find a more collaborative way to write and record. The band wrote a lot of the material over the course of a year, giving the songs time to develop naturally, often writing songs while on tour, then revisiting them once back home. “We took our time. We grew with the album and it developed organically into the collection of the songs that we’re so completely in love with.”

Artists ANNE EDMONDS Anne ‘Eddo’ Edmonds is one of Australia’s most exciting stand-up, character and banjo-playing comedians. Since bursting onto the scene in 2010, she has brought her exquisitely incisive characters, songs and worldview to TV (Have You Been Paying Attention?, Dirty Laundry Live, Back Seat Drivers, It’s A Date, Wednesday Night Fever), to clubs and to comedy festivals around Australia and all over the world. After a sold-out season and a prestigious Peer Award win at MICF and supporting US podcast and comedy superstar Marc Maron on his Australian tour in 2015, Anne took her show, You Know What I’m Like, to London’s Soho Theatre in January 2016. She is currently touring her Barry-nominated show – That’s Eddotainment – around Australia.

A S H G R U N WA L D The only way a man can truly come into his own power, is to begin seeing who he truly is. Not seeing what he thinks he should be and certainly not seeing himself as he’d like to be seen by others. This is the brutality and in the same breath, the blessing of time, of experience and of the confrontation of a world that’s moving in contrast to core beliefs. This is Ash Grunwald latest album: NOW. Continuing to evolve from where he left off with Guargantua, Ash brought in Ian Perez, keyboardist for Wolfmother, and Pete Wilkins, former drummer for Blue King Brown. The effortlessly gifted pair built the launch pad for Ash’s detonative sonic boom, forming a wall of sound as abundant in clout as it is in groove. The result is an album with immense force. Strongly political, rumbling from the depths of internal rage. It is sonic thunder that wears all the suffering and the anger of the blues but does not forget for a beat that if you don’t get up sometimes and shake that shit off, if you don’t take a moment to look across the dancefloor and lose yourself in that boy meets girl moment, your heart’ll harden and you’ll lose sight of all the beauty you’re fighting for. Without pretension, without doubt – NOW is the landmark album of his career to date. Playing: Friday - Lighthouse Stage - 11:00pm
AY L E E N O ’ H A N L O N Perhaps it’s the Irish blood, the rural upbringing, or the folk records in her parents’ collection. Whatever the secret ingredient, it’s clear that Ayleen O’Hanlon has a knack for honest storytelling coupled with a unique ability to captivate any audience. Her songwriting evokes widescreen imagery, and when set to heart-wrenching harmonies with fellow guitarist and vocalist, Rich Davies, the results are visceral, fierce and tender. Hailing from small-town New South Wales, O’Hanlon emerged in 2015 with the album Blend and Spill displaying a confidence and candour rarely seen on an alt-folk country debut. Since then she has wowed audiences around Australia on several tours, appearing at a number of festivals including Port Fairy Folk Festival and Brunswick Music Festival, and has curated a major songwriting and history event, Going Back for the Darebin Music Feast. Testament to her commitment to the craft, O’Hanlon is also making a name for herself in established folk-rock outfits, Mick Thomas & The Roving Commission, and Rich Davies & The Low Road. Backed by her skilled picking on guitar and banjo, her distinctive voice and charisma will carry a song to any listener’s heart with vigour and authenticity. BEN HARPER & THE INNOCENT CRIMINALS (USA) It had been seven years since Ben Harper last played a show with the Innocent Criminals, so when the time came to reunite for a live tour in 2015, the band—percussionist Leon Mobley, bassist Juan Nelson, drummer Oliver Charles, keyboardist Jason Yates, and guitarist Michael Ward—quickly discovered that Harper had more in mind than simply revisiting the group’s prodigious collection of hits. In fact, Harper had been quietly amassing material for a new record, Call It What It Is, and the first recording sessions were scheduled to begin even before the rehearsals for their triumphant four-night sold-out reunion run at the Fillmore in San Francisco. “I thought we would be more energized and revitalized by thinking outside the box and starting with new material in the studio before we dug into the old stuff,” explains Harper. “It was meant to be a signpost that we’re here to forge new ground musically and personally. Because of that, the older material started to sound brand new too.” Beginning with his 1994 debut, Welcome To The Cruel World, Harper released a string of eight studio albums over a decade and a half. This extraordinary run, featuring contributions from the Innocent Criminals, established him as a singularly powerful songwriter and performer with range across multiple genres and an unmatched ability to blend the personal and
political. Massive, international sold-out tours, Top 10 debuts in the US, Gold and Platinum certifications overseas, and a slew of TV appearances cemented Harper and the band’s status as genuine global stars. “The process of working outside of my comfort zone is really important to my growth,” explains Harper. “The situations I’ve put myself in have pushed me further than I could go in any familiar setting, and that’s what’s brought me back full circle to the Innocent Criminals now. Everybody went out and grew in their own ways during our time apart, and that’s brought this heightened level of appreciation for each other and what we do.” “Each member brings a wealth of knowledge and different styles of music,” said Nelson. “What makes us unique is that we come from different places musically and we seem to complement each other because of the different styles that we play.” The result is perhaps the proudest accomplishment of Harper’s prodigious career. “The time we took with this record has let me look it straight in the eyes and say that I gave everything I could to it and that it’s exactly the way we intended it to be. To be able to say that we’ve left no stone unturned just feels great.” For the legions of Ben Harper fans that have been waiting eight years for a new album with the Innocent Criminals, it feels even better.

BULLHORN There’s an old saying, popularised by The Breakfast Club: “you mess with the bull, you get the horns”. What does it mean? Not much really. Mostly that if you do something dangerous, you might get hurt. One dangerous thing you could do would be to miss the crazy, brass based, MC led explosion that is Bullhorn. Formed in 2011, these party animals combine virtuosic musicianship, crazy arrangements, catchy grooves and upbeat rhythms to whip the audience into a veritable frenzy. As adept at creating original tunes as they are at reimagining the likes of Bonobo and Easy Star All Stars, this nine piece behemoth is hell-bent on good times. Their presence is formidable; armed with trumpets, trombones, saxophones, drums, the mighty sousaphone and the massive presence of Roman MC. As Bullhorn starts to play, audiences will experience intoxicating grooves and huge rumbling sounds around them as they descend into a world of rich sonic textures created live, acoustic and real.

D O U G A N T H O N Y A L L S TA R S Thirty years ago, The Doug Anthony AllStars were conceived on the streets of Canberra, busking in shopping malls (setting fire to themselves in bins, starting fights, getting arrested). In 1987 they launched at the Edinburgh Festival and took over the world comedy scene; playing to huge crowds, breaking the mold by taking comedy into rock venues. They were the biggestselling act at the Edinburgh Festival for eight years. UK audiences bathed naked (literally) in the mob-rule chaos that DAAS shows inspired. From the famous Theatres in London’s West End to tiny late night shows in Irish pubs, DAAS were fast becoming Australia’s most feared, loathed and adored of all comedy exports. In 1989 Australian comedy producer Ted Robinson stole them for his live-to-air ABCTV show The Big Gig. At last, Australia woke up to DAAS! The trio launched DAAS Kapital, the ABC sitcom that outraged viewers around the world. It was banned in Japan and Germany, attracting what Rolling Stone called “the most suspect fan-base on Earth”. The show featured DAAS trapped in a submarine with Paul ‘Flacco’ Livingston, cabaret king ‘Bob Downe’ and the misunderstood psychopath ‘American Bob’.
After two seasons of DAAS Kapital’s moral mayhem and sellout world-tours, the group relocated to New York and the UK, where Timeout London described them as ‘”the rock stars of comedy”. DAAS attacked Canada, the USA and Europe, including a notorious performance at the Barcelona Olympics Festival where their song about dogs was met with stony silence by the 12,000 international attendees. They starred in award-winning shows on the UK’s BBC, ITV and CH4; regular appearances on HBO, ABC, NBC, and The Today Show; and a live TV broadcast of DAAS performances in New York and London, winning the Best International award two years running at Tokyo Comedy Festival. But it wasn’t all plain sailing. DAAS famously provoked a riot at Edinburgh’s Bear Pit comedy venue, resulting in several arrests and one stabbing. Tim Ferguson’s ‘Dance of the Winged Monkey’ was banned from the Hammersmith Odeon, and the group was thrown out of the Belfast Comedy Gala for reasons they still refuse to explain. In 1995 when they threw in the towel, it stuck to the wall. Now they are back. Be mildly unnerved. Be very mildly unnerved.

EILEN JEWELL (USA) Honesty, confidence, and respect permeate Eilen Jewell’s music, dating back to her self-released Boundary County album in 2006. Since then, the Boise native has recorded five studio albums for Signature Sounds with her road-tested touring band, and two more as a member of the Boston-based gospel-charged Sacred Shakers (also on Signature Sounds), which includes that well-oiled band at its core. Her latest, Sundown Over Ghost Town, is a masterful culmination of Jewell’s work to date. As hard as it is to categorize Jewell’s music—terms like alt-country, roots-rock, country-noir, and Americana get used a lot—it’s even harder not to become thoroughly enraptured by the singer/songwriter’s powerful versatility, musical stories, and images. And that gorgeous voice makes you feel like she’s singing just for you, out on the breezy back porch or by a crackling campfire. She does so much, so well.

THE HARPOONIST & THE AXE MURDERER (CAN) Juno-nominated Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer evoke much more than just grisly nautical imagery. Armed with an arsenal of harmonicas, a mess of foot percussion, and a road-worn Telecaster guitar, the duo kick out raw and primal blues in the tradition of a “decades-deep blues style” (Scott Brown, What’s up Yukon), while infusing the genre with a jolt of renewed energy. Their critically-acclaimed release, A Real Fine Mess, proves that they’re on a continuing journey with no sign of slowing down. Be a part of their recollection of blues antiquity, but don’t be surprised if it slaps you in the face.

H O L L I E J OYC E Wild, unconventional and ruthlessly blunt, Hollie Joyce is a songwriter completely in control of her craft. Combining fervent lyrics with distorted and at times eerie tones, Joyce has established a compelling sound that doesn’t hold back. Her influences span wide, drawing as much from the works of Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Holly, Patti Smith, Nirvana and Bob Dylan as she does from ‘70s horror flicks and spaghetti westerns. The result is a dynamic cacophony that sometimes strays into raucous rock’n’roll freak outs, while at other times deviating to the more alluring and melodic.

The now folk singer/songwriter, crashed his skateboard at the age of 13, leaving him unable to play his drumkit and in a wheelchair for 4 months. Joe taught himself guitar and unconsciously developed a indie/roots style which blend together to produce his unique style. With attention to articulate lyrics, catchy melodies and rhythmic detail, Joe’s songs express his genuine emotion. His authenticity and passion is conveyed in his intimate live show, and is an experience not worth missing. In September Joe released My Jumper, the first single from his second EP Way Down South. A bold and adventurous record, that sees Lane extend his musical boundaries far beyond his previous acclaimed Folk and Alt. Country sound. Imagine Rufus Wainwright is drinking tequila with Neil Young. In walks Paul McCartney, arm in arm with Neil Finn discussing the demise of human connection, and you’re drawing closer to the space that Lane inhabits in his creation of the fanciful world that is GLASSELLLAND. Lathered with lush and sometimes frightening sonic sounding landscapes, Jordie Lane tackles personal and world issues with at times tragic and vain, facetious delivery of heavy social themed lyrics. The record itself was written and produced solely by Lane with regular cocollaborator and in demand LA based Songwriter/Producer Clare Reynolds. They also took on the insane task of building make shift studios in several cities around the world and teaching themselves to double as the recording engineers and players of every single instrument on the album. Playing: Friday - Hippos Stage - 6:45pm | Saturday - Glaneuse Stage - 2:15pm | Saturday - Vue Grand - 8:30pm | Sunday - Salt Lounge - 12:15pm
JULIA JACKLIN Growing up in the Blue Mountains to a family of teachers, Jacklin discovered an avenue to art at the age of 10 thanks to an unlikely source: Britney Spears. Jacklin chanced upon a documentary about the pop star while on family holiday. “By the time Britney was 12 she’d achieved a lot,” says Jacklin. “I remember thinking, ‘Shit, what have I done with my life?’ So I was like, ‘Mum, as soon as we get home I need singing lessons’.” Classical singing lessons were the only kind in the area, but Jacklin took to it. Eventually she wound up in a high school band, “wearing surf clothing and doing a lot of high jumps” singing Avril Lavigne and Evanescence covers. Jacklin’s second epiphany came after high school. Travelling in South America she reconnected with high school friend and future foil Liz Hughes. The two returned home to the Blue Mountains and started a band, bonding over the songs Hughes was writing. “I would just sing,” says Jacklin. “But as I got my confidence I started playing guitar and writing songs. I wouldn’t be doing music now if it wasn’t for Liz. I never knew it was something I could do.” Now living in a garage in Glebe, the 25-year old found time to hone her craft – to examine her turns of phrase, to wonder who she was and who she might become. That document is Jacklin’s masterful debut album, Don’t Let The Kids Win - an intimate examination of a life still being lived. JULIEN BAKER (USA) For years, Baker and a group of close friends had performed as the band Forrister (formerly The Star Killers), but when college took her away, her need to continue creating found an outlet through solo work. The intent was never to make these songs her main focus, yet the process proved to be startlingly cathartic. As each song came into shape, it became more apparent that Baker had genuinely deep, surprisingly dark stories to tell from her thus far short life. Tales of her experiences are staggering, and when set to her haunting guitar playing, the results are gut wrenching and heartfelt, relatable yet very personal. At the prompting of a friend, Baker ventured to Richmond, Virginia to record a number of her new songs at Spacebomb Studios. The tracks from this session were circulated among Baker’s friends, meeting high praise. Soon, she found a home on 6131 Records’ increasingly diverse roster, and plans were made to release her debut full length, Sprained Ankle. To call Sprained Ankle a happy accident would be misleading as to the nature of these poignant, emotive songs. Yet no one, least of all Baker, could have predicted she’d be releasing an album, especially as a solo artist. Thankfully, now the world will be able to share in her passion and sorrow. Artists KILLING HEIDI To celebrate 20 years since the band formed, Killing Heidi will be performing exclusive sets of their biggest hits for the first time in 10 years, including headlining the opening night of the 20th Queenscliff Music Festival. “It’s a celebration not a reformation” says Jesse “We thought this was a really special opportunity to reflect on that era, as it’s Queenscliff’s 20th anniversary - and we started Killing Heidi 20 years ago too!” It’s been twenty years since triple j unearthed the Hooper siblings as Killing Heidi with their folk pop song, Kettle. The Australian public embraced the duo who soon became a band, releasing debut album Reflector in March 2000. Singles Mascara and Weir made Reflector a blow-out success and the album makes up an integral part of Aussie indie music story – one that hasn’t been told digitally until now. Reflector took out four ARIA awards and reached 4 x platinum status. Weir placed #2 and Mascara #14 in triple j’s Hottest 100 in 1999. The Hooper siblings won the critically-acclaimed APRA songwriters of the year award for the album. The album launched the band into international markets, and the Hooper siblings followed up with another two top twenty albums and four toptwenty hit singles. For old and new Killing Heidi fans alike the digital re-release has been a long time coming. “Fans have been asking for years for Reflector online, It’s amazing that generations of people still feel connected to this music, they want to blast it… And now they can! It’s great, it feels like coming full circle.” - Ella Hooper

KIRA PURU Known for her charged, dynamic live performances and genre-defying writing style, Kira Puru is widely respected as one of Australia’s biggest voices. Since the folding of her band, Kira Puru & the Bruise in 2013, Puru has collaborated and toured as a writer and feature vocalist with Paul Kelly, Illy, Paul Mac and Urthboy amongst others and is the voice of ABC’s Redfern Now. Having earned a throng of dedicated fans and industry accolades with her versatility and power, Puru is again centre stage with a new band, new songs and new sound. Her new work combines a love for hard-hitting hip-hop beats, a shameless obsession with trashy pop music and an admiration for earnest, confronting lyricism. With Gabe Stranjio (Clairy Browne, Boatfriends), Shanna Watson (Boatfriends, Caitlin Park, the Early Nights, BirdsandBelles) and Sam Peterson (Boatfriends, the Evening Son) on the lineup, Puru’s live sound couples dreamy, electronic beats with warm, live instrumentation. A collision of pillowy RnB, janky industrial textures and harrowing vocal play, Puru’s sonic vision is dark, gloomy, cooked pop–anything but a vapid soul throwback.

LEAH SENIOR Leah Senior’s music falls into a dim wallpapered room of slightly out of tune parlour guitars and the ghosts of Summer and 1960s Britain. The blinds are drawn and the songs are covered in a fine layer of dust yet there is sunlight peaking through the gaps, a silver lining to a dusky tone and a sense of humour behind the tragedy. Leah’s debut album “Summer’s On The Ground” recorded in a rickety abandoned hall reveals a haunting and intimate storyteller, Rolling Stone saying “this is insular music, akin to eavesdropping on someone else’s prettily conveyed thoughts”. Leah Senior’s new album was recorded with Joey Walker of King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard and is set to come out early next year through Flightless/Remote Control.

LINYING (SGP) Prefacing her initiation into both local and international music scenes, Singaporean singer-songwriter Linying released her first two singles, “Sticky Leaves”, followed by “Alpine” in 2016, gathering masses of digital plays worldwide while charting globally and in the US, UK, and Singapore on Spotify’s Viral 50. While international collaborations with producers Felix Jaehn and Lost Frequencies had previously seen Linying’s ethereal vocals featured on deep house imprints like Armada and Spinnin’ Records, the Spotlight on 2016 Featured Artist is now breaking into the indie-alternative consciousness with her brand of moving lyricism and vivid music production in songs that reveal a stark emotional perspective through elements of indie-folk, electronica, lo-fi and alt-rock.

T H E M E LT D O W N A bold, brassy, twangy steam train of bumping backbeats and swinging shuffles. Then there’s that voice. Sweet as honey. The voice is soul, but it’s country too and something else indefinable; like you heard it before but don’t know where... There’s a fair chance you haven’t heard that voice before, because for the last few years Simon Burke has been flying small planes out of small airfields in the dusty backcountry and taking refuge from the hustle and grind of the music business to raise a young family. The time off has been fruitful. A lifetime of writing and experience is condensed into a golden set of songs and a killer new band, The Meltdown, which Simon formed in collaboration with saxophonist and arranger Lachlan McLean. Great vibe, great players, great sound, but it’s the songs that are king here. There are a lot of soul revival bands around, but the Meltdown’s angle is different – Simon and Lachlan are both Playing: Friday - Glaneuse Stage - 10:15pm | Saturday - Vue Grand - 5:45pm

pretty country and The Meltdown has more than a bit of that Ray Charles country via gospel thing, and a taste of dirty blues in it too. Echoes of towns like Euroa and Avenel, where the boys blew in from, or just artistic license? Either way, if there’s one thing that soul and country can both do for you, it’s songs about heartbreak. So, ladies and gentlemen, let us introduce to you the inimitable voice and songwriting of Mr Simon Burke.
Artists THE MOJO CORNER Such is the growing character of new breed blues musicians who take the bull by the horns The Mojo Corner have developed a reputation for hard rocking blues and in their short time together. The ‘steam train’ rhythm section of Will Darker and Shaun Hilton, along with Johnny Hawken’s strong vocals and driving guitar is enough. But top this with Rory Millar’s gravelly vocals and biting harmonica licks you have a band that pushes passion and emotion right to the limit. With the electricity of the blues pulsing through their veins you can’t stop your foot tapping and your heart pumping. They have played hundreds of gigs including the Queenscliff Music Festival, Echuca Blues Festival, the Bendigo Blues and Roots Festival, and most recently Woodford Folk Festival. The band has influences such as the likes of Muddy Waters, Jimmy Hendrix, Howling Wolf, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Led Zeppelin, and Eric Clapton and many more. This energetic four piece
band, pushes passion and emotion right to the limit. By just watching this band you can’t help but become involved. With the electricity of the blues pouring out of them, you can’t help but fall in love with The Mojo Corner!

P A U L K E L LY & CHARLIE OWEN Iconic Australian artists Paul Kelly and Charlie Owen have collaborated over many years, but had never recorded an album together. In 2016, this changed with the release of the superb Death’s Dateless Night. Paul recalls “Charlie and I had talked over the years about making a record together but had never got around to it. Driving to a friend’s funeral last year and discussing the songs we’d played on other such occasions, separately and together, finally gave us our frame. Songs mostly written by others – Cole Porter, Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen, Hank Williams, Lennon/McCartney –and some traditional. We enlisted J Walker with whom I’d worked with previously on ‘Spring and Fall’ to engineer and co-produce the recording, taking over Charlie’s house at Arthurs Seat for a week at the end of February. We kept the sound live and sparse, just the two of us, except for the occasional vocal by family members – my sister Mary Jo and my daughters Maddy and Memphis. I stuck to singing and playing acoustic guitar. Charlie was the swing man, playing dobro, lap steel, electric guitar, synthesizer and piano. I managed to talk him into singing some harmonies too. It’s interesting to look at the kinds of songs people request at funerals. They’re not always sad, of course. They tend towards the philosophical, wide and deep in scope.”

QUARTER STREET Quarter Street take you back to the heart of classic salsa. Inspired by the raw sounds of New York in the ‘70s, the Quarter Street revisit an era where the music of the streets resonated with the voice of the people. Formed in early 2011, Quarter Street combine the fresh energy and the skills of well known established musicians. A dynamic live band with a driving rhythm section and heavy horn section, this vibrant group of talented Melbourne musicians are quickly making a splash in the Australian music scene. From the first few notes, it sounds like the real thing. Piano and bass riff hard. Percussion enters. ¡Oiga Papa! Listen up! The trombones come in thick and strong. Hard salsa. It’s not shiny, it’s not clean and poppy or unduly jazzy. It’s tough, it’s gritty and ballsy, and in terms of musicianship, writing and production, it straight up cooks. There’s been a lot of rough and real analogue funk, soul and
Afro material released in the last couple of decades, from the Dap-Kings and Antibalas in New York to the Poets of Rhythm in Germany. So far, few have flown the flag for the revival of hardout analogue era Latin music. Quarter Street are doing it.

Artists SIMON PHILLIPS Simon is far from your typical guitarist, with a vast range of vocal melodies and using every limb in his body – his foot percussion that brings the beat, a tambourine and the sweet sounds from his Cole Clark guitar. This virtuoso blends a distinctive and skilful sound that’s heavily steeped in soul, gospel, finger style and blues’n’roots. Did we mention the harmonica and mouth trumpet? Simon redefines the meaning of a one-man-band with the artistry that The Freemantle Herald called “Quite literally amazing…he should be listened to obsessively”. His evocative lyrics express a voice deep within which talks of a raw human emotion that we all implicitly know. “It’s all about the fragility of the human condition, there are so many beautiful stories that need to be told… We need to document how people make change, and hopefully that will inspire change for the future”, Simon says. “When you write something that you really feel in your heart, something so real from your own personal existence that it brings you to tears, you’re going to play it no matter what, isn’t that what it’s all about?” A natural born storyteller, Simon expresses his philosophy and poetry through his music, a modern day tambourine man that chooses not to play by society’s rules, and for good reason. SON LITTLE (USA) The artist formerly known as Aaron Livingston knows his nation well. He was born to a preacher and a teacher in Los Angeles, where he learned how to listen and how to play before moving east to New York and New Jersey. He dropped in and out of schools in Manhattan then Philadelphia, and there he collaborated with acts like The Roots and RJD2. He first planted his flag as Son Little with the highly praised EP, Things I Forgot, a small collection of big songs that showcased his ability to hop across genres as well as he does state lines. The pastiche and reach of his music is all over the map. In his music, you can recognise the places he’s lived, traveled, and played to, places explored and discovered. “I hear places in the songs without trying to evoke them while writing. I can trace where a lot of my music came from, as my life and my family touch so many different places. I can hear the Gulf Coast of Louisiana in my voice, the way I say some of the words; I hear New York, definitely in my lyrics. Detroit is a place I haven’t spent a ton of time in, but if I explore the music of Detroit, I can hear myself in there, too.”

S T E V E P O LT Z ( U S A ) Steve Poltz is obsessed with the challenge of knowing and understanding the thoughts of each and every person in his audience. He is a lover of life; fascinated by all things large and small. As a road-tested troubadour armed with whimsy, curiosity and a healthy respect for the absurdities of existence, he is unafraid of saying yes, unafraid of letting his relentless, giddy energy fill a room and he is unafraid of letting his streams-of-consciousness take him where he needs to go. His songs are guileless snapshots filtered through the windshield of his brain. He opens his mouth and lets it fall out - a song - and it’s as shameless and intriguing and profound and wondrous as he is. A mix of high octane performance, singular wit and endlessly entertaining storytelling, Steve is legendary for his improvisational songwriting and timeless, original classics. Oh, and he’s a pretty good guitarist too.

SWEET JEAN Sweet Jean is Sime Nugent and Alice Keath. Their music ranges from stark and gothic, to hazy and melodic. Since forming in late 2010, Sweet Jean has built a reputation for evocative songwriting, razor-sharp harmonies, and stirring live performances. As the AU Review put it, Sweet Jean “can break your heart one minute and mend it the next. The duo has a natural ability to transport their audience to the heart of their songs.” Sweet Jean’s sophomore album Monday to Friday was released this year, the album ranges from expansive, vintage synth-driven songs about space exploration to jangly, straight-shooting narratives about everyday life. The pair demoed the songs in their home studio and then worked closely with producer, friend and band mate John Castle (Vance Joy, Washington, The Bamboos) at The Shed Studios, swapping instruments, eating ramen, and nutting out arrangements. On writing the album Monday to Friday, the duo explains “ in the past we’ve written about other people in other times and places, and for this album we wanted to stay in the here and now and write about some of the significant and insignificant things that are rolling around us. For our first album we worked on happy/sad. This time we wanted to bring big/small to the table.” Playing: Saturday - QMF Express (Carriage C) - Departs 11am, 12pm, 1pm | Saturday - The Church - 4:15pm | Sunday - Glaneuse Stage - 11:30am

WILLIAM CHRIGHTON There’s an energy building around new Australian talent William Crighton, and it’s not by accident. Crighton has stamped himself as one of our most exciting artists, his debut self-titled album introducing a storyteller with a rare depth to his lyrics. For the deep-voiced songwriter and intense live performer, there were no short cuts taken to arrive at this body of work. Beneath each track are thousands of kilometres, and within are stories wrought of trees and roads and dust, soaked in the essence of our ancient continent. “For the last few years William Crighton has been building a strong buzz around his songs and live performances — both solo and with his band. Finally we see the fruition of his songwriting and recording with his mesmerising debut album… The confessional Woman Like You, the Riverina stomp of Priest and the bristling, brooding rock groove of Jesus Blues are but three highlights from this exceptional debut.”

It gives young artists the chance to perform live in front of an audience at a nationally acclaimed music festival, which is a very valuable and rewarding experience for those selected artists. There are three sections of the FOOT-in-the-DOOR competition: Pop/Acoustic, Blues Roots & Beyond, and Rock. Five bands/artists will play in each section battling it out in front of a panel of industry judges and spectators for the Grand Prize. Grand Prize - winner of each category will receive a day recording and mixing at Don’t Poke the Bear Studios, all thanks to our friends at Oxygen College.

We l c o m e Welcome to the 20th Queenscliff Music Festival. This year for the first time in our history QMF has SOLD OUT. This is a fantastic and fitting achievement for our 20th anniversary festival. From humble beginnings in 1997 with an attendance of 1460 people and 23 volunteers, this year will see over 15000 attendees at our festival, and almost 500 volunteers helping you to enjoy the best of Australian music, fine food and beverage and showcasing our wonderful town of Queenscliff. Our success over the past couple of years is largely due to the fantastic work of Festival Director Andrew Orvis and his team, who have worked hard to improve all aspects of the festival, building on the great feedback you provide to us through our post festival survey. However, this success is also a measure of those that have come before him, with each of our previous Festival Directors contributing to the Festival as it now is. Hugo T Armstrong, Barb Moss and Michael Carrucan have all made lasting contributions and provided a strong base upon which Andrew has been able to build a festival that provides a great experience to all who attend, contribute back to our community and respect and enhance the environment within which we live. To celebrate our 20th anniversary we have a fantastic exhibition of the past twenty years up at the Town Hall. For a gold coin donation that will support a local community group you can revisit the past twenty years through our posters, programs and extensive archive of photos. Featuring an exhibition from local resident photographer Rodney Nicholson the exhibition is a must see to add to your program of activity over the weekend. In preparing for this year’s festival and celebrations we have identified that 70% of our 2015 festival attendees had been to at least one previous festival, and 15% had been to TEN or more festivals. Stories abound of people who have grown up with the festival and it is no surprise that Professor Sue Beeton, herself a veteran of all 20 festivals, has written a story around the history of QMF titled “Dad put me on his shoulders”. This book, in addition to being a great story on our history has some fantastic photographs and I encourage you to get in early and get yourself a copy of this great memory of our first twenty years. Of course we are not resting on our laurels. With your support we have now consolidated our position as a small but hard hitting festival, offering great value for money, great community spirit and a perfect access point to all that Queenscliff and the Bellarine Peninsula has to offer. From this strong base we will continue to strive to make Queenscliff a truly great experience for all.

We are delighted that the success of the festival allows us to support emerging artists from the Bellarine and to provide professional development for artists through our Alison McKenzie scholarship. This scholarship was established in 2016 to commemorate our life member and Board Member Alison who sadly passed away in February this year. Congratulations to Hollie Joyce & Rach Brennan our 2016 Emerging Artist Grant recipients, and to Madeleine Cope & Aidan O Cleirigh our inaugural scholarship recipients. We remain indebted and appreciative of the continued support from our key sponsors. Please support them where you can, as it is only with their ongoing commitment that the festival is a viable concern. All sponsors are listed within the program but our particular thanks to the support we receive from Visit Victoria, Searoad Ferries, the Borough of Queenscliffe, and FReeZa. Once again we have worked with a variety of local community groups to help us to run our weekend festival. Their involvement providing a range of varied services for the festival, allows us to provide much needed support in the way of funds to these groups, thereby ensuring QMF is contributing on your behalf back to the community who host our festival. We also have a great team of nearly 500 volunteers without whose effort our festival just could not be run. You will see them across the weekend wearing their Q-Crew T-shirts, and remember they are there to assist you as required over the weekend. We greatly appreciate their commitment, dedication and professionalism to ensure you have the best possible festival experience. We hope you have a great time here in Queenscliff over the weekend, and see enough of the town and its surrounds to encourage you to come back at another time and enjoy all of the other benefits Queenscliff has to offer. On behalf of the QMF Board we welcome you to QMF 2016, and thank you for your ongoing support.
