New Kids on the Block WORDS BY GRETA BRERETON
Meet Wolf on Watton, Werribee’s newest eatery. The all-rounder venue has opened just in time for summer, serving up everything from your morning coffee and eggs, to your Friday night feed. There's a new player in the restaurant market aiming to redefine Werribee's food scene. Always a breakfast hotspot, the city’s café culture is stronger than ever, and now the fine dining and wine bar scene is about to move up a notch. Meet Wolf on Watton. The shiny new haunt popped up in Watton Street in September. The first business venture for local brothers James Pearce and Nathan Salvalaggio, Wolf on Watton serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The pair say they found themselves having to travel further afield for fine dining and wanted to provide something closer to home. “We’re pretty keen on wine bars and fine experiences,” says Nathan. “But everyone kind of finds themselves going into the city for that,” adds James. “So we thought, ‘Let’s bring it to the west’.” As well as dreaming of filling a gap in the Wyndham dining scene, the brothers were also spurred on by a special family connection to the area’s hospitality history. The Wolf on Watton site is one that has been in the family for four generations, dating back to the 1940s. “It all started here with my grandfather, and that was in the mid1940s,” explains Ori Salvalaggio, Nathan’s father and James’ stepfather. “He bought it and then built a fruit and vegetable shop and a gelati bar.”

Meet the Locals
From left to right: Michelle Salvalaggio, Nathan Salvalaggio, Ori Salvalaggio, Bianca Salvalaggio, James Pearce “From there, his three daughters – Bianca, Linda and Mary – worked in the shop with him and they ran that until the mid-1970s.” But the family lineage doesn’t stop there. Bianca Salvalaggio, James and Nathan’s Nonna, was the next to take over the site. She renovated the shop and transformed it into a café called Trovarellis Coffee House – after her maiden name – which she ran for about a decade. “Then they sold the business to someone else,” says Ori. “Over time, the
business in there went broke and that kind of created an opportunity for us to demolish the building and create a new building.” “Now, the family’s gotten back into it with my two boys. It’s back in the game, basically.” Wolf on Watton might have a sleek new look, but the family say that customers still remember the old days, particularly their Nonna’s café. “We get a lot of customers sitting here and reminiscing on when they used to sit here like 40 or 50 years ago,” says Ori.
“One of the plumbers here in the area, he was served by my mother 40 years ago having breakfast at the café, and he was being served by my son just recently. He was reminiscing saying, ‘Unbelievable, I was served by your mum and now I’m served by your son’.” James’ mother Michelle is also the owner of day spa, Fifth Element, right next door to Wolf on Watton. The brothers are keeping their family legacy alive by reinvigorating the site, but their food isn’t traditional Italian fare like you might expect. Instead, they’ve gone for modern Australian cuisine, with little nods to their heritage in the form of their grazing plates and selections of charcuterie. “This grazing area that we’ve got is our point of difference,” Ori explains. “People get the view of the chef cutting up the prosciutto or the capocollo or the bresaola, and that’s just a sight in itself.” “We make our own salami and so forth, every year we have a ritual of doing that. That’s not what we sell here, but it is where the concepts grew from.” In addition to their evening selections of cheeses and cold cuts, they also have an impressive mix of small plates, large plates and sides. Their drinks menu is a point of pride, too, offering an extensive list of cocktails, spirits, beers and wine. Doing a roaring breakfast trade, Wolf on Watton also has a beaming brunch menu. Try the Alpha Wolf – beetroot relish over the top of a herbed potato rosti, fried egg and maple-glazed bacon steak to get your day off to the right start. Considering their local history, modern menu and chic interior, it’s no wonder they’ve been riding a wave of success since opening. “So far we’ve had a good response from the Werribee community,” says James. “Getting lots of regulars and people coming down to try it out.” “There’s families, young adults, and even some of Nonna’s friends.” With a tick of approval from Nonna and her friends, Wolf on Watton is well worth a visit. If you’re looking for authentic Italian pizza, head into local mainstay Ages Pizza in the heart of Werribee’s food precinct for a selection of delicious gourmet and classic pizzas, cooked in a traditional oven. Try their unique spaghetti pizza – combining two of our favourite meals in one crazy dish – or trust the regulars and order the everpopular Italian Special topped with hot salami, bacon, olives and more. It’s the perfect spot for a lazy lunch in the sun on their outdoor deck or a post-work al fresco dinner overlooking the Werribee River.
Delectable South Asian cuisine is on offer at District 3030, who opened their Werribee eatery after seeing huge success at their Sunbury location. Their modern dishes fuse a range of mostly Vietnamese flavours with local ingredients, like the Mekong Barramundi Curry and the Lobster Tail Seared in Spicy Ginger. If you’re seeking something more traditional, the menu has you covered with dumplings, bao, chicken sticky rice and papaya salad, among plenty of other options. If you have an event coming up, District 3030 cater externally as well as offering private dining and banquet menus for eat-in celebrations.
They call themselves a “world of scrumptious wonderment” and, quite frankly, we can’t think of any better way to describe the Augustus Gelatery. They may serve artisan gelato, but that doesn’t mean it’s all fancy flavours. Think childhood classics like cotton candy, bubble gum and mint choc, each offering impeccable quality and sensational flavour. There are plenty of vegan options on hand that even non-vegans will love – after all, who can resist peanut butter and jelly or coconut and mango? Eat in and enjoy their nice seating area with big windows opening out onto the street.

Sounds of Summer WORDS BY GRETA BRERETON
Werribee City Centre’s Pop Up Park is returning this summer and welcoming back a familiar face. For the past two years, summer in Werribee has seen the city’s Station Place transformed into a family-friendly Pop Up Park. With chill-out areas, live music and a bunch of workshops, the annual event becomes a community hub, bringing together residents from across Wyndham. Someone who has been around since the first Pop Up Park is singer and Point Cook local, Michelle Gardiner, who’ll be returning to the event in January 2020. “I can’t wait, I’m dying to know who the act is that I’m supporting,” says Gardiner. “Last year it was Kate Ceberano, and she was amazing. I really enjoyed her show and there was a really great energy at the park.” Gardiner’s personal connection to the area gave her an edge when securing a spot on the line-up. “[Wyndham City Council] were doing other little pop up music events during the day as well, in the summertime, so I did a couple of those. I’d done some other events for the council as well, so they knew of me and put me on.” “Having these events has been really great for that community, and I know that they’ve worked really hard on that.” Gardiner’s passion for country music started when she was a child. She was born into a country-loving family and grew up singing with her dad at family functions. As she got older, she entered various talent quests, scoring a pivotal win at age 18. “I won a country music talent quest in 1997, a long time ago now,” she laughs.

“The prize of that was to record an album at a studio, so I did that, and it was quite overwhelming for me at the time. I don’t think I was ready to really invest myself in it.”
"It’s a really tough industry and if you don’t have the passion for it, then it’s definitely hard to do." After the album, Gardiner abandoned the music scene, only to return to it later in life. Now a married mum of two, she admits that tackling music professionally has been a learning curve. “I’m just a mum, you know?” says Gardiner. “Being a musician is a business, and you own your own business.” “It’s a really tough industry and if you don’t have the passion for it, then it’s definitely hard to do.”
Gardiner’s passion is definitely paying off. She released her first self-titled EP in August this year, and has been busy performing shows around the west, from her own suburb of Point Cook to Customs House in Williamstown. With a trip to Tamworth also on the cards, Gardiner is making her mark in the country music scene. As for new music? Well, there’s some of that on the way too. “I have a new single coming out three days after the Pop Up Park,” she teases. “I’ll definitely be performing it as a little sneak peek.” Werribee City Centre's FREE Pop Up Park runs from Friday January 10 to Sunday February 2. All Jokes Aside WORDS BY GRETA BRERETON
Prepare for some belly laughs as Judith Lucy makes her way out west.
Wyndham Cultural Centre have dropped their summer entertainment program. They’ve got Rebel, a glam-rock David Bowie tribute show on the cards, as well as Ray Lawler’s play Summer of the Seventeenth Doll. They’ll also be welcoming longstanding comedian Judith Lucy to the stage, adding a little humour to the mix. It’s been a big year for Lucy. A Melbourne favourite, the comedian has been on the road with her latest stand-up show. Aptly titled Judith Lucy vs Men, the performance sees Lucy recap her sometimes disastrous relationship history, and then asks the audience if she should give up on men completely. “It’s quite an impressive litany of shocking stories that I have about men,” Lucy laughs. “Despite hearing these stories every single night, the audience votes that I should keep dating. Australia is really trying to tell me that they want

me to just get out there and meet Mr Right.” Creating the show wasn’t all jokes and laughter, though. “It was actually quite a difficult show for me to write, to be honest,” Lucy admits. “My last break-up, which inspired the whole show, was just awful.”
"This is going to sound incredibly dicky, but I don’t know why we’re here if it’s not to connect with each other." “After I broke up with my ex, I actually wound up doing a lot of yoga and looking after myself, which was good and a step forward. But one night, I did just go out and get completely hammered and I woke up the next morning with a crippling hangover and full of the
wonderful self-loathing, shame and paranoia that goes with that.” “I spent hours lying in bed, staring at the ceiling and that was when I reviewed my entire history with men. I honestly just lay there thinking, I think I’m done; I think I really need to stop.” While many of us would choose to bury our heads in the sand or fall into a mild depression, Lucy did what she does best – turned the whole ordeal into comedic fodder. She’s found that she isn’t alone in these experiences either, with people at her shows sharing their own tales. “I think because my stuff is so personal, people feel like they kind of know you,” she says. “It means that quite often people, even though I haven’t met them before, will come up to me and tell me something about themselves, tell me their story, and I really love that.” Some might balk at Lucy’s openness, and she herself wonders if she’s missing some sort of filter, but it’s this willingness to share that makes her so endearing. “I know some people are much more private, and I guess I’ve never really quite understood that,” she muses. "This is going to sound incredibly dicky, but I don’t know why we’re here if it’s not to connect with each other.” “We’re all in this s**t sandwich, so we may as well all talk about what we’re going through.”
Catch Judith Lucy at the Wyndham Cultural Centre on Saturday February 15. See the full program and book tickets via the venue website. WYNCC.COM.AU
Nights by the River WORDS BY GRETA BRERETON
Riverside Nights Festival is coming to Werribee, providing a plethora of food, entertainment and activities for those balmy summer nights. As the days get longer and evenings grow warmer, the team from Nightjar Festival are gearing up to launch their first ever Riverside Nights. Setting up in Werribee’s Wyndham Park, they’ll bring local stallholders, talented artists and a bevy of food trucks together for fun-filled Fridays in March. More than just a market, Nightjar has been drawing crowds down the Surf Coast for ten years. Torquay resident Lyndelle Flintoft is the brains behind the operation, launching Nightjar to fill a gap in the local scene. “I was a jeweller, so I used to run around and do all the big design markets, like Finders Keepers and Big Design,” Flintoft explains. “I didn’t want to keep travelling back and forth to Melbourne all the time, so I started my own in Torquay.” “It’s been hugely successful. We now, through our Torquay and Geelong events, bring thousands of people through the gate, and that grows by about 25 per cent each year.” It’s a success story that Flintoft hopes to recreate in Werribee, with the introduction of Riverside Nights. The event will follow a similar format to its Surf Coast counterparts, but tailored to showcase the best of Werribee and suit the needs of residents in the area. “Nightjar is all about nurturing a positive and inclusive, connected community,” Flintoft explains. “We love going to communities that really want to connect and I think it’s such an important part of it.”
“It’ll be nice to get to know the Werribee community and what they need and what they really want and what works there.” Over the course of the past year, the council has been working on Wyndham Park, and it was the transformation of the scenic riverside spot that caught Flintoft’s eye. “It’s based right along the river, among all the gumtrees, and it’s really beautiful,” she gushes. “I’m super excited about creating it, to be honest.” “I can just see big, beautiful lights everywhere. I think it’ll be a really comfortable space for people to hang out in.” With such a spectacular site to work on, Flintoft is particularly mindful of minimising their environmental impact. Nightjar’s approach to sustainability is a point of pride for Flintoft, and a strong environmental ethos pervades the events.
“We don’t have any plastic bottles enter the site, we make sure that people bring their reusable bottles,” she explains. “This year we’ve moved to cans, too. We’ll sell all our alcohol in cans. I think if you have an event with so many people coming through, you sort of want to be making people aware that you can make a difference.” Program details are soon to be announced, but if Nightjar is anything to go by, Riverside Nights will be well worth checking out.
Riverside Nights will be held at Wyndham Park Friday 13, 20 and 27 of March in 2020. For more information head to Nightjar Festival's website. NIGHTJARFESTIVAL.COM.AU
