Another spring comes around. I remember last year writing about renewal, but this year repetitive cycles have been on my mind. I often find the concept of repetition horrifying, but just recently I’ve been seeing these patterns with a new perspective. The sun’s out, the weather is warming and I see spring doing its work everywhere. I’m constantly bombarded with affirmations of the repititous nature of existence. It really can be a beautiful thing. Understanding this can be the kick along we need to identify those personal patterns that create joy and happiness in our lives, and those that don’t. I’ve realised that it’s not the repetition that’s depressing, it’s being trapped in patterns that are not meant for me. (Like derrrrrrr.) I think this is one of those things that most of us already know, but struggle to take action to change — which is just another negative pattern really. So find the things that make you happy and build them into your life. The rest is all crap. And on the topic returning events, Canberra SpringOut is fast approaching for another year and we are in for lots of fun as usual. Major events include Fairday, BentFest — who have a fantastic line up of queer films including The Doctor’s Wife — and of course Bushdance. There are of course heaps of other SpringOut activities, so keep your eye out for details over the coming weeks. Josh Thomas is also returning to Canberra with his show ‘Everything Ever’ where he’ll talk about everything that has ever happened... ever! Josh once said, “Realising I was gay was a difficult, confusing time for me. I don’t need more pictures of Tony (Abbott) on the beach shoved in my face forcing me to reconsider what team I picked.” — how’s that for a recurring mental image we could all do without. INTERSEX PEOPLE FORCED TO JOIN SEX OFFENDER REGISTRY In a shocking move, a change to health policy in Australia may mean that intersex Australians will be forced to join a sex offender registry to get needed medication. Cyproterone Acetate, better known as Androcur is a medication used by numerous intersex people. It is also used by registered sex offenders, as it reduces a person’s sex drive. The change to the Government’s health policy means that the medication will only be approved for two types of people, those with prostate cancer and for registered sex offenders. This will mean that in order to get the medication, a doctor must ask whether one is willing to go on the sex-offenders’ registry. If you’re not, you may be denied a prescription.

HOMOSEXUALITY DECRIMINALISED IN MOZAMBIQUE In fantastic recent (although a little delayed) news, homosexuality has been decriminalised in the African country of Mozambique. In March, the African nation’s justice minister Benvinda Levi stated that homosexuality is not a criminal offense. Mozambique is one of the most progressive nations in its region in terms of rights for queer people, but activists are pushing for further action, including a constitutional amendment to enshrine rights for queer people in the country.
DON’T ASK, DON’T TELL ABOLISHED...
BUT NOT FOR TRANS* PEOPLE The repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell in December in the United States was seen as huge victory for queer activists in the country. Finally, there was equality in the US military. Yet, as the repeal of DADT has become a reality, it has become clear that whilst there is no longer any formal discrimination against gay and lesbian people in the US military, discrimination based on gender is still rife. For example, being transgender is still often considered a medical issue or a mental health condition. Upon “coming out” as transgender, people will almost certainly be discharged. Even if people dress up in drag in their own time, off-base, if the military finds out about it, they can expect to be discharged. Unfortunately, most ‘mainstream’ GLBTIQ organisations in the United States are ignoring this reality — saying that the battle in military has been won.

Before handcuffing herself to the White House fence, former Petty Officer 1st Class Autumn Sandeen (photo above) carefully pinned three rows of Navy ribbons to her chest. Her regulation dress blue skirt, fitted jacket, hat, and black shoes were new — fitting for a woman who spent two decades serving her country as a man. Sandeen was the only transgender person among the six veterans arrested while protesting the military’s ban on openly gay troops. But when she watched President Obama sign the hard-fought bill allowing for the ban’s repeal, melancholy tinged her satisfaction. “This is another bridesmaid moment for the transgender community,” said 51-year-old Autumn Sandeen. The “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy — although now something of the past— does not apply to transgender recruits, who are automatically disqualified as unfit for service. But the military’s longstanding posture on gender identity has not prevented transgender citizens from signing up before they come out, or from obtaining psychological counseling, hormones, and routine health care through the Department of Veterans Affairs once they return to civilian life. THIS MONTH’S IDIOCY Rick Santorum, the anti-gay Republican presidential candidate, claims there is a gay “jihad” against him.
In research in the UK domestic cats have been genetically modified to resist the feline form of AIDS. The treatment genetically modifies feline eggs to resist HIV. These eggs are then fertilised and inserted in to a foster mother. In order to assess whether the experiment was successful, researchers also inserted the gene that makes jellyfish fluorescent. The result is not only cats that are resistant to HIV, but also ones that glow in the dark.
Mr Santorum has throughout his career angered activists by compared homosexuality to incest and saying people should not have a right to privacy with respect to sexual acts. Facing recent criticism of his words, Mr Santorum had this to say:
Whilst this holds great potential for a treatment for HIV, it will also raise more questions about the ethics of genetic modification and animal welfare as we continue to search for solutions for AIDS.

I don’t listen to anything at the gym. I have a personal trainer, so I listen to him. F: Hair product — Putty or Pomade? JT: I don’t use putty or pomade because they’re both too greasy for my hair. Cos my hair is too thin and it just falls over if you put that much grease in it. I use a powder, like a dust. Yeah, it’s brilliant. It’s pretty new. Makeup ladies put me onto it. CREATING SPACE FOR THE THINGS THAT MATTER In this busy world, it is important to create space for the things that matter. Whether it is dinner with a loved one, quiet time alone to reflect on life or even a session at the gym trying to keep fit, we need to set aside a dedicated space for these important things. If we don’t, we run the risk of letting our hectic modern life overwhelm us. Politics is no different. Politicians run the risk of being consumed by the 24-hour news cycle and allowing it to run our lives, but only if we let it. To guard against the risk of short-termism we need to build a dedicated space into our work for the things that really matter, often the things that drove us to enter politics in the first place.
For this reason, I was delighted last year when a motion by my Greens colleague Adam Bandt was passed by Federal Parliament. The motion called on members of all parties to go out to their electorate and gauge the views of their community on the issue of equal marriage. On August 24th this year, two and a half hours was set aside in Parliament for members to report back what they had learnt. This gave the politicians a chance to fully discuss the issue, rather than being squeezed into the ten second sound bite that we often need to generate. Adam Bandt was the first of 31 politicians who spoke, saying, ‘Today is a good day for those who believe in love and the power of love to change things for the better’. Positive contributions were also made by the Liberal’s Malcolm Turnbull, who reported that 72 per cent of his NSW electorate supported marriage equality, and local ALP member Andrew Leigh who also said most people he had spoken with supported changing the laws. That is not to say that everyone was in agreement. There was a kaleidoscope of views and opinions given. Some were certainly an anathema to my own views. That was to be expected. But equal marriage matters to many thousands of Australians and I am glad Federal Parliament dedicated a space in the day’s proceedings to discuss the issue and to give voice to the views of their local constituents. What spoke to me loudest on the day was that the politicians had created a place for difference to flourish and to be heard. 10

And in a way, that is at the heart of what the Greens Equal Marriage Bill will do. It recognises that difference creates richness and represents maturity. Our Bill that has been tabled in the Senate will make room in the Marriage Act for same sex couples. Our Bill says that Australian laws should not shut the door on people because of who they love and that we must make room for everyone.

So the proposed legislation exists. All we need now is enough Australian politicians to put their faith in love and accept that a rich and mature society is one that has made a place for difference. HIGH SPEED RAIL CANBERRA’S
‘INTELLECTUAL SILK ROAD’ The idea of a high-speed rail link down the east coast has been around a while. It has always had strong support in Canberra. Let’s face it, who is against being able to get to the CDB of Sydney or Melbourne inside an hour? The Hume Highway is possibly the most boring drive known to man... but it might well be improved when travelling in a bullet train at 300km and enjoying a cocktail in the onboard lounge bar. So the news that the train has been put back on the agenda by the Federal Government is most welcome. I don’t think anyone underestimates the magnitude of it though. With an estimated price tag of over $100 billion this is obvious. But many in Canberra are optimistic that in the words of Rachel Hunter “it won’t happen over-night, but it will happen.” What the Federal Government has sensibly done is to recognise it requires long-term thinking and a number of steps if it is to become a reality. And the first step is to examine, choose and preserve the route. That is the process we’re in now. This recognises that a project like this requires “spade work” so that when the time comes — the track can be laid. Rail is without question the most energy efficient form of land transport. As such it will better link Canberra into the national low-energy future.

By providing very fast links between Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and even Brisbane — it will be the “intellectual silk road” for Canberra-based businesses to trade with Australia’s major population and commercial centres. It will have an important role in growing the ACT’s $1.5 billion tourism industry — and the 13,500 Canberrans who work in it. It will make it easier for local businesses to attract and retain talented people, lifting productivity and allowing for greater job creation in Canberra. This will permeate through the ACT economy, encouraging new economic and social activity and the supporting the creation of more jobs. It’s a project whose time — if not already here — is just around the corner. In summary — the economic and environmental benefits of this project in the long-term are obvious — as are the costs. That’s why I am heartened that the vision of an east coast high-speed rail network is being examined in a measured way. And when it does it will be good news for Canberra. That’s why the ACT Government remains committed to doing whatever we can to ensure the high-speed rail becomes a reality — and that Canberrans can take best advantage of it.

BUZZ ! YTT BACK ON TV As a child of the 70s and a teen of the 80s nothing was more important to me than Young Talent Time. While cheesy and embarrassingly lame at times, those kids in the ‘Young Talent Team’ represented a glamour and a celebrity that felt somehow attainable. It was showbiz, but it was regional and relatable, which really meant something to a young, camp boy growing up in the cold, provincial one horse town that was pre-millennium Canberra. For years we’ve been teased with a YTT return, but now it is bona fide with last month’s announcement that the Ten Network are pushing a Young Talent Time reboot as one of their great hopes for the 2012 lineup. Rob Mills will be taking charge as host, a perfect replacement to Johnny Young (still on board as an exec producer), hopefully bringing a much-needed cheekiness to the proceedings. When you think about it, the format was essentially the same as Idol or Glee: Covers of songs, old and new, by your favourite team member (in my case Natalie and Mark), and so the potential for success is a bit of a no-brainer.
Young Talent Time produced some of Australia’s brightest stars, including Tina Arena, Debra Byrne and sisters Kylie and Dannii Minogue.
It will of course have to lift its game, and the production values will need to be on par with the aforementioned current television phenomena if it wants to survive in today’s pop cultural landscape. If you’re not familiar (and you want a really good laugh) there is a YouTube user called redbooks1 who has a channel with almost 800 uploads of original YTT clips from its run between 1971 and 1988. If the names Joey Perrone or Katie Van Ree mean anything to you then you are in for a huge treat. And if you’d like to explore your inner stage-mum, auditions are scheduled for Young Talent Team members in October in most state capitals. Details are on the Ten website. I am already busy choreographing ‘Poker Face’ for my 9-year-old nephew. Fingers crossed, and Goodnight Australia!
CELINE SUES I worship Celine Dion. She has talent to burn, the tenacity of a prizefighter, and (to borrow from Kathy Griffin) is a whole bag of crazy. It should be said, the crazier she behaves the more I love her. So it was with great joy I recently came upon the Tumblr blog entitled Ridiculous Pictures of Celine Dion, which as the name suggests boasted page after page of our favourite chanteuse in a seemingly endless array of badly posed photos. There was head twitching and arm waving, eyes popping and mouths contorting, and there were outfits the likes of which even Sharon Stone would have thought twice about. It was really something to see, especially in the sheer volume this website provided. 16
So how devastating to find a notice posted by the site Administrator sadly announcing, ‘We just got a letter from Celine’s lawyers that the blog has to be shut down’. According to the post, the blog content is in fact well within the law and abiding by Tumblr’s ‘fair use’ policy, however the Admin claims, ‘I don’t have the money or time to get a lawyer to respond. The dream is over’. Hitting the email and Facebook rounds a few months back, Ridiculous Pictures of Celine Dion went viral. And while it seemed all of us were enjoying this lighthearted look at celebrity insanity, this is probably where Team Celine got wind of it and took steps to end it all. It’s not all bad news, with the recent announcement that Celine has delivered a behind the scenes documentary to the Oprah Winfrey Network, premiering October 2nd. Dubiously titled Celine: 3 Boys and A New Show, the one-hour special is sure to bring us more glitz, more glamour and more ridiculous pictures. WWW.FUSEMAGAZINE.COM.AU
BUZZ ! SUPER-STRIPPERS Something magical has been brewing in Tinsel Town… something beautiful and astonishing. Something slowly taking shape, that will soon come to fruition as the single greatest cinema experience of our time. This phenomenal film is happening people. And hold on to something because this is the précis: Magic Mike is the story of a hot older, experienced male stripper who mentors a hot young, naïve male stripper at a hot male strip club called Xquisite where hot men strip. Genius! But it gets better. Confirmed casting so far includes Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Matthew McConaughey, Matt Bomer, and William Levy. Add to that mix Joe Manganiello from True Blood, who has signed up to play the pivotal role of a stripper called Big Dick Richie. Seriously! If any of those names make no sense to you, then I suggest you Google image them immediately — but maybe not in the workplace — and make sure you are fully prepared for hot-guy overload because this is a veritable list of Who’s-Who in Hollywood hard bodies. Based on Tatum’s well documented pre-movie star experiences, Magic Mike is being directed by Oscar winner Steven Soderbergh which, along with a cast of somewhat respectable (hot) actors, lends a great deal of credibility to the project. If, like me, you were hoping for Top Gun meets Coyote Ugly you might be in for a surprise as the screenplay is by Indie documentary maker Reid Carolin, a relative newcomer who worked on Tatum’s recent film Ten Year, and Soderbergh has been quoted as saying ‘We’re using Saturday Night Fever as our model’. It won’t see a release date until next year, but no doubt we’ll be hearing (and seeing!) a lot of Magic Mike promotion over the next six months. Amen and hallelujah! !
JUST JACK IS COMING BACK Exciting television news is starting to filter through about the inevitable return to the small screen of the always wonderful, Sean Hayes. The talk is that Hayes is making a new sitcom for NBC that doesn’t actually have a title as yet, but sounds a little like Two And A Half Men for homos. Centering on a gay couple and their adopted 12-year-old son, the show was featured as part of the network’s big 2012 lineup announcements last month, but not much more is known about it at this stage other than it is the brainchild of Rescue Me co-creator, Peter Tolan, and that it is being billed as a family show with a twist. Hayes is of course best remembered as the fabulous, scene-stealing Jack in Will & Grace and, whilst his profile may have seemed a little low key in recent years, he has actually worked on numerous projects, including the Broadway revival of the musical Promises Promises with Kristin Chenoweth, as well as hosting last year’s Tony Awards. This will be his big return to a regular TV series, and his first starring vehicle. And given that it’s an NBC project and in the safe hands of the network’s openly gay president, Robert Greenblatt, this new comedy is undoubtedly going to be something special.
DAMN YOU ALEXIS! Dust off your Nolan Miller couture and free up those diaries for early November, because Joan Collins is bringing her one-woman show to Australia. This is no ordinary night at the theatre people — this is a living legend and a legitimate icon taking to the stage, martini in hand and tongue firmly in cheek, dishing the dirt on a career that has spanned five decades, which includes the highest highs and the tackiest lows. The live show has already been a runaway success in both the UK and the US, with glowing reviews (even the ones not written by gushing gay men). An international star of stage and screen, Joan Collins achieved worldwide notoriety throughout the 80s playing the ultimate super-bitch, Alexis, in the ultimate supersoap, Dynasty. There were recent whispers that Dynasty creators Richard and Esther Shapiro had written a film script for a prequel to the series, set in the 60s, and Joan hinted during a TV interview that she would almost certainly be involved in any way, shape or form. As thrilling a prospect as that is, for the time being we shall be more than sated by the real-life anecdotes and industry tell-tales she’ll bring with her as part of A Night With Joan playing Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and the Gold Coast. John Waters turned his tasteless tales of white-trash tyranny into a legitimate and lucrative Hollywood career. The renowned filmmaker is responsible for cult classics such as Pink Flamingos and Polyester, as well as big studio blockbusters like Cry Baby, Serial Mom and the original Hairspray. His one-man show entitled This Filthy World hits Canberra on October 25. Less of a comic and more a queer raconteur, Waters’ performance is made up of hilarious observations on society, celebrity, and the weird and wonderful things that make the world go ‘round. FUSE got to chat with him and, if our candid conversation is anything to go by, audiences for This Filthy World are in for one helluva night, don’t miss it! 19

FUSE: I told a straight friend I was interviewing you and he had no idea who you were until I mentioned one particular reference. Can you guess what it was? JOHN WATERS: The Simpsons? (Waters voiced the show’s first gay character in season 8 episode ‘Homer’s Phobia’). F: Yes! Do you get that a lot? JW: From children I do. People have seen me in horror movies, they might’ve seen me on talk shows, they might’ve seen me in movies. I try and cover all bases. F: My best friend actually introduced me to your films at 16. He knew about them because his dad introduced them to him during his formative pre-teen years. JW: Wow! That’s like child abuse. I always thought people’s parents would call the police when they found their kids with those movies. F: Do you get tired of people using words like ‘subversive’ and ‘quirky’ to describe you? JW: It’s better than ‘ugly’ and ‘stupid’. (Laughs) Actually, I think it’s a compliment. You could be called worse. F: This Filthy World has been going for some time now. JW: Well, the name of it has. But I’m constantly rewriting it and changing it. It’s an ongoing monologue, so it’s quite different than when I was in Australia with it last time. F: You brought it as part of the Mardi Gras festival last year, right? JW: Yes. But I’ve never been to your fair city Canberra! I’m dying to come. I love places that I’ve never been. Especially ones that are at all isolated in any way. I find the most curious and interesting kind of eccentricities are there. F: You’ll love Canberra then. It’s a small city with a fabulously seedy underbelly. You should ditch Baltimore and film a movie in Canberra. JW: No! Baltimore is like a character in my films. I know it so well that even the directions in my movie are correct. If you turn right in my movie, you would be turning right in real life. F: Do you have a favourite of the films you’ve made? JW: Female Trouble is the favourite of my Divine movies. I’m always amazed when one does better than the others. I mean, Hairspray is probably very different for some people than Cecil B Demented, but to me they aren’t that different. The messages are the same. They make a different satire of a different kind of genre. But I think the politics and the morals and the acceptance of extreme beauty is the same in all of them.

The Simpsons ran an episode guest-starring John Waters called “Homer’s Phobia.” John did the voice over for John, who’s design was largely based on Waters’ own appearance, although he was animated with thicker hair and a more defined, “wavy” moustache. Don’t you wish John Waters would drive past your house and go “zzzzaaaapp!”
F: One thing I love most about your films are the great character actors: Mink Stole, Cookie Meuller, Edith Massey and of course Divine. JW: Well, Mink I still see all the time. She’s working in independent movies, and also doing a Tennessee Williams play right now in New York. Edith of course died a long, long time ago but you know I dream about her as if she’s still alive, which is odd. And Cookie Mueller was actually a fabulous writer. She should’ve stuck with writing. She was a much better writer than she was anything else, and her books are appreciated long after she died too. I still see her son, Max , who was in Pink Flamingos as the little boy in the pit who is sold to the lesbian couple – which back then (in 1972) was a radical idea, but today every lesbian buys children! F: Do you think Hollywood has current versions of Edith Massey or Divine? JW: Sure! I think everything in my early movies is now completely accepted by Hollywood. I mean, they make the bad taste comedies now. Not me. F: Are there any big names you’d love to work with? JW: Well certainly Meryl Streep. I would love to see her playing a Baltimore hillbilly. If she wanted to. F: What about Lindsay Lohan? JW: The problem with Lindsay is she just gets terrible advice. And you couldn’t get a movie made with her today – nobody would insure her. She’s going to have to go make a really good independent movie for no money and get her street cred back. F: She’s a great actress. She proved that when she was younger. JW: She was great in that Robert Altman movie (A Prairie Home Companion) and I think she’s a really good actress, but then you see these incredibly stupid things she does in real life. She must not listen to anybody. I mean, you don’t go to court in a f**king designer whore outfit. It’s not smart. It’s just stupid. I think she looks great in them, but that isn’t what you wear to court. F: Have you been to court? JW: Oh, I’ve been arrested. I don’t trust anybody that hasn’t been arrested. F: Maybe she needs a John Waters film to bring her back. JW: No. Because then she would just try to be campy. She should play something serious. Or comedy. But one that isn’t making fun of her persona. F: How do you feel about television? Could you bring your trash sensibilities to the small screen? JW: I actually think TV in America, with HBO and Showtime — where you have more freedom and way more people see it — that’s where most of the independent filmmakers are going today. F: So would you? JW: Of course! F: What sort of thing would you write for TV? JW: Same thing I’d write for a movie! It doesn’t matter how they see it. It’s just how you can get it out there. F: Joan Collins is bringing her show to Australia. Did you see it in the US? JW: I haven’t seen it. I’ve met Joan before. And I’ve been on talk shows with Jackie Collins.
F: Suffice to say, her show is pretty camp. How might your one-man show stand up against her one-woman show? JW: Mine will be a little more frightening to some people. And I think maybe a little more intellectual, but maybe not. And the same time, I’ll have more crime and less fashion and no beauty tips. F: And no stories about f**king Warren Beatty, I assume. JW: Oh, I’ve f**ked Warren Beatty. F: Can I quote you on that? JW: No! I’m never attracted to celebrities. The best Tennessee Williams line was ‘My type doesn’t know who I am’. Celebrities are the least type of person I would like to sleep with. F: Okay, I’ve mentioned my best friend is a huge fan. He has front row seats for This Filthy World and he’s wondering which “Divine” look he should emulate. Can you suggest a particular one? JW: Dawn Davenport in Female Trouble. Divine has the Mohawk at the end, with that eye makeup from the top of his head to the back of his neck. That is my favourite look. That was designed by the late Van Smith, who did costumes and makeup for all my movies. F: Do you have a costumer that you work with now? JW: Well, I haven’t made a movie since he died. But I have one in mind, yes. F: Tell me more… JW: No! (Laughs) Because I never talk about something before I do it. I’ve got to talk about it after I do it for the rest of my life. I had been intending to write this article for weeks. It was going to be in well before the editorial cut off, but it just didn’t happen... Not because I didn’t want to or I couldn’t find the time, but because I am sometimes artful in procrastination.

So how often do we know we should take some action with our money or finances but it doesn’t happen? It may be one of the obstacles to people getting their cash flow budget sorted, superannuation consolidated, insurances reviewed and implemented, or their wills drafted and signed. It happens all the time in my office! I meet with people, take them through the money mechanics process and then start mapping out their plans, what they have in place, and develop their financial action plan and wham! ‘Oh yes we have a will — well actually we have a will kit that we haven’t signed yet’. Those legal eagles reading will know an unsigned Will is just not going to cut it. The same happens with superannuation ‘yeah I know about the lost super website and I have some lost super but that is as far as I got!’ When I first started working I signed up for my first super fund at fourteen and nine months and thought I was doing the right thing until a few years later I get a letter from the super fund telling me my account balance was now negative and my life insurance was cancelled. I’d had over $2,000 in that account but because I didn’t understand superannuation enough at that time (maybe one of the reasons I got into financial planning and am so passionate about educating others about their money choices!) I didn’t know the benefits of consolidating the funds that I had.

Sometimes all we need is a little push to get started and pointed in the right direction. I often think of financial planning as project management because advisors help to manage your financial projects to get the things in place that you need, tidy up any loose ends and address any concerns that you may have, but have ‘never had the time to ask or sort out!’ My challenge this month is to take the procrastination out of your money and if you can, out of your life. Break it down into easy to achieve tasks and take action! MAKE THE PHONE CALL, BOOK THE APPOINTMENT, FIND YOUR LOST SUPER, FILL OUT THE FORM, GET THE INSURANCE QUOTE.

THE TIME HAD COME TO UPDATE MY PARTNER’S CAR. WITH SO MANY OPTIONS WHAT WOULD WE DO? NEW, NEAR NEW, BIG, SMALL OR MEDIUM? My parents had just broken their long standing loyalty to Nissan, and bought a new Mitsubishi Lancer SX as a replacement for their X Trail. They were very happy with their purchase and I took it on a trip to Sydney, and was impressed by the comfort and performance. It also only used 7.3 L/100 km of fuel, and it wasn’t run in yet, so you could expect that figure to improve. So we contacted a friend Chris Maher, who works at Commonwealth Motors. Chris would have liked us to buy a Holden Cruze (he is a Holden salesman after all) but we had our heart set on the Lancer SX. Chris introduced us to Charlene Groundwater, who rang me promptly and booked us in for a test drive. Cesar (my loving and tolerant partner) was also keen on the new Mitsubishi ASX, so we drove that too. But it was the Lancer that won us over in the end. The price was a major factor, and the standard features on the SX. The manual sells for about $20,990 drive away. Cesar likes an auto, so we ticked the option box for the CVT auto. We also went for the limited edition orange burst colour, which makes what is a fairly pedestrian car stand out! We got a great deal too, with a couple of extras chucked in for good measure!
The SX comes standard with cruise, MP3, Bluetooth plus USB connectivity. Cesar loves being able to play his tunes straight from his I pod wirelessly! It also has sixteen inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler and a leather steering wheel. Of course it comes with all the usual stuff like ABS, Traction Control and Electronic Stability Control. Oh, and YIPPEE it has a temperature gauge. I like the hatch’s versatility and its ability to swallow up our acquisitions from Bunnings and Domain as required. The back seats split fold to increase luggage space. Probably the biggest bonus was the warranty. The Lancer comes with a five year new car warranty, a ten year power train warranty, four years of capped price servicing and five years of 24/7 roadside assistance. Lilly will be with us for a long time.
The staff at Commonwealth Motors were very helpful. They spoke to both of us like we were a couple, not just focusing on the one with the money (not me!) as some other dealers do.

Basically by measuring just about everything that could be considered, the car selects a ratio most suitable to the conditions. This results in optimum performance and economy. It comes with manual selection for six set ratios, but as with most modern autos it works best when left to its own devices.
With spring in the air, don’t forget to get the pollen filter cleaned in your car’s air conditioner when the wattle has finished doing its thing! Most new cars have one of these, and they don’t clean themselves!

Summer is a social time and I often find myself at after work drinks, heading to the pool for a quick dip, or even taking a trip to the beach with friends. Whatever your doing it’s always great to travel light in Summer. This month I’m going to suggest some simple summer fashion ‘must haves’ that will mean you’ll always look great, be cool and confortable. Lets start with a carry bag. I love a big soft duffle bag, they are perfect for all those heavy winter clothes, but for Summer, the heat definitely calls for a light easy to carry Tote bag, they look great and are very versatile no matter what you’re doing.

Denim shorts have had their time, so it’s time to let them go. Worn with colourful patent heels (for the ladies), or high tops (for the fellas), rock this look all day long, right through to evening drinks. Forget the idea that shorts can only be worn with thongs; live a little! Push your boundaries! A must have for every summer wardrobe is the predictable but never fading Aviator sunglasses. A classic pair of gold Ray Bans are the ultimate. Find the style that’s right for you, but the vintage look is raging right now. If you’re concerned about having a smaller face, think Victoria Beckham and upsize your sunglasses. It’s a great way to achieve a real 70’s mod style.

For a more casual evening look, what I find really simple and effective is throwing on a lightweight, cotton or linen shirt and leaving it undone. (You can wear a singlet if you’re shy.) Jil Sander showed some amazing bright colour-blocked looks in her last runway show and it’s a great trend so grab a brighter, flat coloured shirt in a lighter fabric, roll up those sleeves, match a light weight pant or dressy shorts and you’ll have a chic summer look! And finally, Boat shoes are fabulous additions to your summer wardrobe, so grab yourself some. You could even do a lace up brogue, and wear them without socks.

Set in the leafy and shaded grounds of Westlund House, colourful stalls will be spread around the lawns of this hub for Canberra’s queer community. Hundreds of members of our sexuality and gender diverse communities, along with our supporters, will stroll around and gain or regain a sense of the pride we share together on only a few public occasions each year. This will be the 10th year that Westlund House, home to the AIDS Action Council, has hosted Fairday. As the launch event for the annual SpringOut Festival, Fairday has been gaining renewed popularity over recent years. Last year’s event was evaluated and both stallholders and attendees were surveyed. Suggestions and other feedback have been incorporated into the planning for Fairday 2011. The mix of stalls, sense of community and entertainment all rated pretty well. Improvements suggested included food and beverage options, stall layout and particpation in the Pet Parade. A variety of food stalls will definitely be a highlight, especially for those who forget to bring a picnic basket. The stage area has been moved to a more central location and it will be much easier to view from everywhere. The new Fairday layout also provides a centralised spot or “lounge” for the crowd to gather in a convenient location to socialise and enjoy the entertainment including our outstanding Qwire.
COMMUNITY Over recent years, being family friendly has been an increasing priority, and in 2011 there will be more fun and creative activities for our kids, including face painting and a huge jumping castle. Fairday is a chance to have a picnic, meet with friends and connect to our community. It is a chance to learn more about the large range of community groups and organisations we have available and even join a few. It’s also a great time to grab a few things to start ticking off your Christmas shopping list. There is something special about Canberra and the way we do things. A Pride Festival is a must for all cities whatever their size and it’s important that we in Canberra develop our events in our own way and celebrate our rich diversity. Fairday is itself a continuing statement of our own sense of belonging and not being shackled by arbitrary definitions of gender or sexuality. So now it’s time to put Fairday 2011 in our calendars and prepare to get ourselves down to the lawns of Westlund House. On current trends, the event will soon outgrow this space and maybe it’s time for us to start talking about moving to a larger and more public location. This must always be a community event so what we need is a community conversation about what we want in the future. It is important to use the feedback options to express our opinions. This year’s Fairday will be on Saturday 5th November, kicking off at 12 noon and running through until around 5pm.

JAMES TUDOR guys, jocks & fully functioning buttons FUSE: Is it true Prince William wore a pair of James Tudor underwear under his navy suit on the day? JON HAMMOND-HAGAN: We would definitely like to think so. I’m sure Prince William has excellent taste in underwear and James Tudor would definitely enhance him in all the right places. FUSE: Why is the world obsessed with the royals? ALEC HARRISON: We would be a much duller place without them. The royal family are what Britain is known for and I don’t think fish and chips would generate quite the same amount of interest. F: You named your collection after the most notorious royal dynasties — the Tudors. JH: We chose the name Tudor because we wanted to convey a sense of history in our brand. We took inspiration for our first line from historical men’s tailoring, looking at the design detailing of 18th and 19th Century men’s dress. We applied this detailing to modern underwear shapes using modern fabrics and colors. We wanted to pay homage to this in the brand’s name. F: Does the Tudor name evoke sexuality? AH: Definitely. The Tudor period was a period of decadence, debauchery and sexual freedom. In short, they were a bit of a dirty bunch! We wanted to capture the decadence of the period in our brand, maybe with a little hint of debauchery thrown in too.
F: Did you guys always want to design men’s underwear? AH: I wouldn’t say we always wanted to design underwear. We both wanted to do something in fashion. Jon worked in music and styling and I worked in costume design before we launched James Tudor. We both love our underwear and we thought there was a gap in the market for men’s underwear that had a completely different design aesthetic. F: How is James Tudor different than other gear on the market? JH: It’s all in the detailing. We have really worked hard to create an aesthetic that is cool and edgy. We’ve created something that has never been done before in men’s underwear. We’ve incorporated magnetic openings, button detailing and created a fit that is second to none. F: Whose idea was it to add the buttons? AH: The button idea was initially inspired by 18th Century men’s breeches. We had just made a sample and we thought, ‘lets try adding some buttons’. They looked amazing and the idea developed in to what became the fall front brief. We knew immediately that we had created something totally different. F: Are they purely for aesthetics or are the buttons performing some hidden duty? AH: The buttons on most styles are fully functioning so they are not just there for aesthetic purposes. I guess it just depends on how you want to use them.
F: What are the hot colors for this season?
F: What do you have planned for your new line?
JH: It’s all about contrast block colors: yellow and navy, pink and black, orange and white. They are sexy!
JH: We are introducing pop inspired retro briefs and boxers in seven bold color patterns. They give great support and lift. 35

TIP.01 ATTENTION ALL COFFEE DRINKERS! My partner and I are big believers in organic gardening. But alongside that we also both enjoy a cup of really good coffee. This ends up in a pretty large pile of used coffee grounds. So what to do with them? Well, we collect them all in a special bucket and transfer them up to our lovely garden. Our plants just love them. Here are some tips for making great use of those otherwise wasted resources.
CHUCK THEM DIRECTLY INTO YOUR GARDEN Coffee grounds can be thrown directly into your gardens and vegetable beds as a side dressing for vegies and other plants. Coffee grounds are high in nitrogen, but be a bit careful not to overload one spot as they are also pretty acidic. Adding other brown material such as leaves and grass cuttings to the mulch will help keep a more balanced pH.
COFFEE GROUNDS + COMPOST = FABULOUS Coffee grounds act as a green material with a carbon-nitrogen (C-N) ratio of 20-1. They make an excellent addition to your compost, along with other vegetable and green kitchen waste. Combined with other composting material such as leaves, straw and cut grass, coffee grounds generate heat and will speed up the composting process. Grounds should be no more than 25% of any one compost pile’s content, otherwise the balance is out and the system doesn’t work as well.
WORMS LOVE COFFEE TOO! Worms fed with coffee grounds combined with the normal composting materials will flourish! They grow faster and break down the materials quickly. Maybe it’s all that caffeine speeding them about! TIP BY : ALEX THATCHER : HOME ORGANIC GARDENER
TIP.02 SPRING SELLING Yes it is that time of the year when the weather warms up, flowers bloom, the sun is out and things in real estate start to pick up for both buyer and seller. Whether you love it or hate it Karaoke has become a worldwide phenomena. I’ve been hosting Karaoke for some time now and here are a few tips to help have the most fun and sound the best you can. 1. CHOOSE SONGS THAT YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH Go through the song catalogue and note the songs that you like and are very familiar with — consider one’s that have popular appeal, but aren’t over done. If I never hear “Piano Man”, “Margaritaville”, “Sweet Caroline” or “Brown Eyed Girl” ever again, it would be way too soon. Oh and Rap — don’t do that either (unless you actually can).
2. MATCH SONGS TO YOUR VOCAL RANGE Your vocal range is the difference in pitch between the lowest note you can sing and the highest. Knowing your range will allow you to quickly work out whether you can sing a particular song. 3. WARM UP YOUR VOCAL CORDS Take a deep breath, keeping your shoulders low. Starting from your lowest note, sing “Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So-La-Ti-Do” up the scale, until you reach the top of your range, then sing it in reverse “Do-Ti-La-So-Fa-Mi-Re-Do” down the scale. 4. WIFE JONATHAN DUFFY IS A MAN ON A MISSION AND THAT MISSION IS TO GET HIS FILM OUT TO THE MASSES, WHICH HE’S DOING WITH ALL THE GUSTO OF A SEASONED PR PROFESSIONAL. THERE’S THE WEBSITE, THE SOCIAL NETWORK ACCOUNTS, AND YOU MAY HAVE EVEN SEEN ONE OR TWO OF THE MANY “SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION” VIDEOS HE’S UPLOADED ONTO YOUTUBE. ‘I just decided to hit the streets and was asking people if they’d heard of my film, and if they hadn’t I wanted to know why, because I’m a pretty big deal where I come from.’ Where he comes from is a tiny country town called Biggenden whose population is not quite 700 people. So when he says he’s a pretty big deal, he’s actually not kidding. A few years ago his boyfriend, Dr Vincent Cornelisse, took a residency there as the local GP and so the two of them moved away from their comfortably gay inner-city lifestyles to see how they could adapt to rural Queensland. Duffy took his camera along, and the result is a fascinating, often touching documentary about a gay couple’s adventure and the remarkable community they encounter.

‘It’s less Wandin Valley and more like Bon Temps from True Blood,’ Duffy admits, describing some of the townsfolk he’s encountered along the way. ‘There are some interesting characters and some really passionate fiery and intense people. It’s a bit more HBO and a little less Channel Seven.’
The film focuses on the vast differences between life in the big city and a small country town, as well as those elements that are unexpectedly similar. But it deals also with the preconceptions we tend to have about the things we really have little knowledge of. And it’s grassroots filmmaking at its core, with Duffy taking on most roles himself. ‘I guess you could say director, writer, producer, composer, PR representative; it’s a one-man show.’ He later admits some of it was from necessity and some of it was control issues. But his background in film gave him a clear idea of what to expect. By Tony Hamlyn
‘I used to be an actor, so I worked on films. I had a lot of experience holding a boom pole. That’s sort of where I learned about working behind the camera. So it wasn’t entirely alien to me. I just had never taken on a project this big, and done it alone before.’ And while the lack of finances might have limited certain production values and marketing support, it’s certainly had its upside. ‘Funding everything myself has been a gift because I don’t have any financial backers that I have to please. It’s enabled me to be more cheeky about things and much less PC, which is who I am as a person and I haven’t had to compromise any of that.” Charming and engaging, this filmmaker’s enthusiasm for his pet project is contagious, and after spending some time talking to him it’s hard not to come away intrigued. Canberra’s Bent Lenses group is screening The Doctor’s Wife, and will feature a Q&A presentation with the pair. They are looking forward to seeing how audiences outside of Queensland will react. Canberra audiences, Duffy suggests, ‘should expect a bit of a roller coaster, a bit of a ride. And I’m very proud of this’. He then adds, laughing, ‘They’ll laugh, they’ll cry, they might even wee a little bit’.

She’s young, gorgeous, and can sing. And the co-writing credits on this, her debut album, prove Zoe Badwi is more than just another pop starlet. Highlights here include ‘Relapse’, a catchy, commercial possible next single, and ‘In the Moment’, a fiercely uplifting club track mixed by Melbourne production team Denzal Park. Last year’s chart singles ‘Release Me’ and ‘Freefallin’’ are of course included, and the album doesn’t stray too far from that dance/pop direction with the exception of ‘Believe You’, a stripped down piano ballad delivered with convincing emotion and technique, and the eerie, stalker-esque ‘One Step Behind’ which has hints of Kylie’s Impossible Princess period. The entire thing is dripping with big international production values and a solid pop sensibility, and at the heart of it all is this fabulous vocal. Zoe might run the risk of getting lost amongst all the Sophie Ellis Bextors and the Wynter Gordons, which would be a great shame given she is a local gal. KELLY’S STRONGER Kelly Clarksons releases a new CD, Stronger, on Oct 25. According to the lady herself, the album’s influence came from ‘Prince, Tina Turner, Sheryl Crow, Radiohead and there’s a little bit of a Country’ Diverse, no? Fingers crossed for a tour next year.
FAGGOT Earlier this year the Broadcast Standards Council in Canada legislated a radio ban of Dire Straits’ ‘Money for Nothing’ over its use of the word “faggot”. Last month, however, a new ruling found that ‘the story told in this song, developed at some length… provides sufficient plot development, story line and context to justify’ the use of the word. Canadians are free to hear bad classic rock once more.

Maroon 5’s hot front man Adam Levine spoke candidly with Out Magazine recently, discussing gay fans, his gay brother (thank you Jesus!), and slamming American Idol for not being gay enough (clearly he doesn’t buy into those seacrest rumours). His main beef is Idol’s lack of support for gay contestants, when comparably The Voice, Levine’s own singing competition show, this year had no less than four openly gay finalists. ‘You can’t hide basic components of these people’s lives. Many straight boys today who are confident in their sexuality are not scared to admit they have gay boys who are good friends. But if your gut feeling is telling you there is more to the story, avoid the urge to pounce! Be polite, find a safe time to talk to him. Maybe he is wondering if he floats the boat both ways or he is not so confident in his sexuality. Either way, you both seem to have enough of a connection to have an honest talk with each other. Remember to keep it light hearted; it would be a shame to spoil such a fun friendship!
