❂ GLASS HOUSES PEOPLE IN GLASS CHURCHES SHOULDN’T THROW STONES This was a tough editorial to write. I do try to stay level-headed when it comes to ultraconservative Christian voices, but I have to admit it has been difficult over the past few weeks. I need to constantly remind myself that no matter how loud they are, they’re a very small minority within the broader Christian population. Unless you’ve been living under a rock you have probably heard the uproar about the Safe Schools Coalition. Conservative right-winged politicians and Christian ideological crusaders have been quite busy spreading lies and unfounded fear about what Safe Schools actually does.

Straight off the bat I want to put a few things right. There is no such thing as a ‘rainbow agenda’, it’s called equal rights people. You can’t be made gay — or straight for that matter — we’re simply as we are. As for claims that Safe Schools promotes queer sexuality, encourages cross-dressing and teaches students ‘gay techniques’ (whatever they are) — it’s not only absolute rubbish, it’s all about creating a culture of fear and confusion about the real facts. The Safe Schools program is a world-leading, evidence-based program to make schools safer environments for same-sex-attracted, intersex and gender-diverse students (SSAIGD). It helps protect kids from bullying, homophobia and transphobia, while providing young people, educators and parents with the resources they need during what can be challenging times. When it comes to claims that the program is ‘grooming’, ‘indoctrinating’ or ‘harming’ young people, I really don’t think people in any kind of glass structure should be throwing stones. We considered calling Cardinal George Pell to get his thoughts on the subject, but apparently he’s way too busy to come to the phone. Many kids struggle at school, and young LGBTI people often have it much worse — statistics show that one in six have attempted suicide and one in three have self-harmed. When I attended school there was no such thing as a Safe Schools program. I was bullied at school continuously during my high school years. On reflection, I’m sure it affected my mental health and most certainly my ability to learn effectively. I can’t help but wonder how different those years may have been for me if there had been appropriate resources and someone for me to talk to about my feelings and what I was experiencing. I’m deeply troubled that Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull caved in to ordering an investigation into the Safe Schools program under pressure from a minority of zealots. Inclusive schools are not harmful to young people and do not turn kids gay. In fact there is plenty of evidence that the Safe Schools program makes kids feel safer — and I’m absolutely sure that’s what any fair inquiry will show. If we lose Safe Schools it will be a very sad day for many struggling SSAIGD kids who are in desperate need of compassion and support. Alex

DID YOU KNOW? In the first Batman movie released in 1966, four super-villains hold the world for ransom with the help of a secret invention that instantly dehydrates people.
THE DAUGHTER OPENS MARCH 17 After a great 2015 which saw Australian cinema have its best box office result ever (not to mention 10 Oscar nominations for George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road ), the challenge is on to repeat that effort — at least in terms of quality. And The Daughter, boasting an all-star cast (Geoffrey Rush, Sam Neill, Miranda Otto), would seem to be on the right track. Based on Henrik Ibsen’s play The Wild Duck, and directed by acclaimed theatre director Simon Stone, the story centres around a small town logging dynasty and the secrets and lies which are unearthed when estranged son Christian (Paul Schneider) returns home.
BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE OPENS MARCH 24 Other than landing the aesthetically-perfect Henry Cavill to play Superman, Zac Snyder’s Man of Steel was a less than impressive reboot of the superhero. But not to be deterred, Snyder has decided to go even bigger with this sequel, introducing Superman’s nemesis, Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg), as well as Aquaman (Jason Mamoa) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot). And of course, Batman (Ben Affleck), who, as the title suggests, is not a fan of the Kryptonian. Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Holly Hunter and Jeremy Irons also star.
THE JUNGLE BOOK OPENS APRIL 7 Continuing Disney’s recent trend of turning their animated classics into live action films (see last year’s Cinderella), Disney have turned their sights — and CGI magic — on Rudyard Kipling’s tale of orphan boy Mowgli (Neel Sethi) raised by animals in the jungle. Directed by Jon Favreau (Iron-man; Chef) and boasting a voice cast including Scarlett Johansson, Idris Elba, Lupita Nyong’o, and Bill Murray as Baloo the bear, this stunning looking film will introduce a whole new generation to this beloved tale, and perhaps have them seeking out Disney’s 1967 animated version.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR OPENS APRIL 28 Just in case one superhero showdown movie wasn’t enough, Marvel’s latest film sees Steve Rogers aka Captain America (aka hottie Chris Evans), taking on fellow Avenger Tony Stark, aka Iron Man (aka Robert Downey jnr) in this, the third Captain America film. The two buds come to blows over the Cap’s defense of his friend turned villain turned rogue, Bucky, aka The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Bach). Fellow Avengers Natasha Romanov (Scarlett Johansson), Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Scarlet Witch (Elisabeth Olson) are also forced to take sides. And keep an eye out for rumoured cameos from Ant-man (Paul Rudd) and the new, younger Spider-man (Tom Holland).

INVESTIGATION OF SAFE SCHOOLS COALITION Under pressure from staunch conservatives, the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has requested an investigation into the taxpayer-funded program Safe Schools Coalition which helps and supports LGBTI students at school. Although very successful and with wide ranging support, the program — which aims to make schools safer and more inclusive for same-sex attracted and gender diverse students — has attracted criticism from some Coalition backbenchers, the Family First party and the Australian Christian Lobby (ACL).
TRANSGENDER GUY TO APPEAR ON MEN’S HEALTH COVER IN GERMANY Bodybuilder and fitness model Ben Melzer will make history by becoming the first trans man to appear on the cover of Men’s Health in Germany. He will appear on the cover of the April issue after entering the Men’s Health cover boy contest. Ben follows in the footsteps of Aydian Dowling, who appeared on the publication’s US edition last year. Ben, who was born Yvonne, told me media “I started transitioning at the age of 23 and I always had a passion for fitness but because of the surgeries it was hard to achieve my goal.” He added, “After about 3 years everything was finally done and I started to concentrate on my training and diet.” Melzer also recently spoke to Bild.de about his experience being raised as a girl. “I was never a typical girl...pink was a no-go” Melzer says in the video, pointing to a photo of him when younger, saying, “That’s why I’m crying [in] this picture... because they made me wear pink.” “This is me (now) and I’m very happy with the person I became. My inside and my outside finally fit and that’s why I’m not at all ashamed to talk about it. I wanna show the world that we’re just normal guys. I wanna educate and give hope to others.”
Senator Cory Bernardi told the press “... children are being bullied and intimidated into complying with a radical program...” He has called for the program to be defunded, claiming it was being used to “indoctrinate children into a Marxist agenda of cultural relativism.” The ACL has launched repeated attacks, claiming that the Safe Schools Coalition program promotes queer sexuality, encourages cross-dressing, teaches students gay and lesbian techniques, encourages kids to use either girls or boys bathrooms and encourages girls to bind their chests. It’s interesting to note that Safe Schools Coalition was not pushed upon an unwitting education system by “gay activists” as accused by the ALC. It was actually set up in Victoria in 2010 in response to requests from teachers to help them support a growing number of LGBTI students who were wrestling with their identity. The program has the backing of beyondblue, the Australian Secondary Principals Association, the Australian Education Union and the Australian Council of State School Organisations.
FASHION WEEK Genderless clothing made a splash at this year’s New York Fashion Week thanks to designer Andre Landeros Michel. “By creating a genderless label, I hope to celebrate the destruction of antiquated traditions and celebrate equality.”

1 in 99 The lifetime risk of HIV diagnosis in the USA — a huge improvement from the reported overall risk of 1 in 78 about a decade ago.
ROUND UP
AFTER NEARLY 40 YEARS 78ERS REJOICE AFTER NSW GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES APOLOGY It was a chilly evening on 24 June 1978 when over 500 activists gathered in Taylor Square, Darlinghurst to call for an end to the criminalisation of homosexual acts and discrimination against homosexuals. The peaceful march, which coincided with the anniversary of the Stonewall riots in New York, sadly ended in violence and public shaming at the hands of the NSW police, government and media. Julie McCrossin, who is one of Mardi Gras original organisers, told the press she was thrilled and emotional to learn about the proposed apology for the discrimination and mistreatment that she and other gay rights activists suffered.
HALF OF BLACK GAY MEN IN THE U.S. WILL BE DIAGNOSED WITH HIV According to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), at the current HIV diagnosis rates it predicted that about half of all black gay men and a quarter of Latino gay men in the US will be infected with HIV in their lifetime. Johnathon Mermin, Director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and Tuberculosis Prevention, said in a statement “As alarming as these lifetime risk estimates are, they are not a foregone conclusion. They are a call to action. The prevention and care strategies we have at our disposal today provide a promising outlook for future reductions of HIV infections and disparities in the US but hundreds of thousands of people will be diagnosed in their lifetime if we don’t scale up efforts now.” However, the CDC is hopeful that these projections do not have to become a reality.
Although most charges were eventually dropped, the mainstream press published the names, occupations and addresses of those arrested in full, outing many and causing some to lose their jobs. This was the authorities attempt to keep the community in line, but Sydney’s gays and lesbians would not get back in line. Little did those witnessing and partaking in the march know, this was to be the start of Mardi Gras and would become a defining moment in the country’s gay rights history. McCrossincommented “If we get an apology, I think it’s a wonderful and important community event. It’s a recognition that what happened was wrong and traumatic.” The most important thing is that the young people right now who think they might be LGBTIQ know they are part of the community and that discrimination by law against us, let alone by the representatives of the law, the police service, is wrong.”
“These estimates are a sobering reminder that gay and bisexual men face an unacceptably high risk for HIV and of the urgent need for action,” said Eugene McCray, M.D., Director of CDC’s Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention. “If we work to ensure that every American has access to the prevention tools we know work, we can avoid the outcomes projected in this study.” NEWS&POLITICS

44% The number of LGBT Americans who identify as Democratic, with 43% as independent, and 13% as Republican. Conservative LGBT individuals tend to be older, white, and more religious.
Some thought the stigma too great, others did not even recognise that FDV was occurring, while others thought they would not be believed as most services seem geared toward heterosexual relationships.
ROSIE BATTY IS AN AUSTRALIAN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CAMPAIGNER AND THE 2015 AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR.
Of the remaining respondents who sought help, almost 40% stated that the support received was very unhelpful or somewhat unhelpful. Clearly we need to do some work on how we can open the pathways to services for LGBTIQ people experiencing FDV in their relationships. Learning to recognise FDV is an important step and there are certain signs which indicate whether a relationship is healthy or unhealthy.
PROJECT TO DEVELOP RESOURCES ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY COMMENCES Awareness and community discussion about Family and Domestic Violence (FDV) has had a big year, with 2015 Australian of the Year, Rosie Batty, shining the spotlight on the gaps in our services and bringing the nation along on a conversation about the signs and consequences of unchecked violence within the home. The LGBTIQ communities are not immune from the occurrence and consequences of FDV. Recent research by the Women’s Centre for Health Matters into the experiences of LGBTIQ people in relationships where they have experienced or are experiencing FDV, shows that in the ACT there are both service and knowledge gaps around violence in same-sex relationships and 54% of respondents stated that they did not seek help at all.
Healthy and safe relationships are where both partners are able to be themselves and feel comfortable being in the company of the other person. Regardless of the form that the relationship takes, both partners feel like they have a voice and are listened too, and communication is open and honest. In safe relationships you feel free to say no to things, have time that is for yourself without your partner, and spend time with family and friends without repercussions. The Women’s Centre for Health Matters will be undertaking a project which requires LGBTIQ community members with experience of FDV, either as a survivor or support person, to assist in the development of culturally appropriate online printable resources and materials. The goal is to raise awareness within our communities about FDV; what it looks like, what can be done and where to seek support. The project also aims to develop a series of appropriate resources and materials for ACT services including domestic violence, crisis and mainstream services which will be LGBTIQ specific and ensure inclusivity and accessibility. If you would like to participate in this project, please contact Jill Scanlon, Project Worker, at the Women’s Centre for Health Matters on 6290 2166. The voices of all community members are important and we encourage all LGBTIQ community members to participate in the development of these highly valuable and necessary community resources and information.
PRAY YOUR GAY AWAY The Victorian government has introduced a new bill proposing greater powers for the state’s health complaints watchdog to both shut down and publicly name dodgy operators making unproven claims. The Health Minister Jill Hennessy singled out gay conversion therapy, a scientifically debunked and medically condemned practice of attempting to “cure” homosexuality through prayer and psychotherapy, as one of the targets of the proposed legislation. 12
NEWS&POLITICS
A spokesperson for the ACT said the government was not aware of any active ‘gay conversion therapists’ operating in Canberra and that the government would “watch with interest” the implementation of Victoria’s law changes. ‘Gay conversion therapists’ have operated in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria. The longest-running of these programs, Sydney’s Living Waters Australia, closed in 2014. An American Psychological Association study into the effectiveness of gay conversion found it was unlikely to achieve any change and caused side effects such as “loss of sexual feeling, depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts”. Life gets better by change, not chance Which way will you step?
In the first few days of 2016, or perhaps even before, many of us will have resolved to make changes to our lives and ourselves in the New Year. Our resolutions will often be about things we want to “give up” — such as quitting smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, or maybe spending less time on Facebook. There will be weight loss goals and improved fitness goals; we will vow to see our friends/parents/siblings more often; and we will want to do more of what makes us happy, and less of what makes us miserable. Too often we will berate ourselves for letting our resolutions slip, whether after a few successful months or only a few triumphant days, and we will vow to be a better person next year.

> What, or who, is a Counsellor? “Counselling” is not a regulated profession, so anyone can hang out a shingle and say they are a counsellor — whether they’ve done a three day basic listening skills course or have a PhD. What you need to look for is a professional who has completed a recognised degree, and who is eligible and competent to provide counselling. This is where Registered or Clinical Psychologists, Accredited Mental Health/Clinical Social Workers and Accredited Counsellors come in. Make sure the person you choose has the qualifications and experience to help you. Psychologists should be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and mental health social workers should be accredited by the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW). Registered clinical psychologists and accredited mental health social workers can both provide Medicare rebated consultations. Counsellors should be registered with the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PaCFA), however these practitioners are not eligible to provide Medicare rebates. Professional counsellors are found in a variety of settings — such as private practice, public and community mental health organisations, not-for-profit agencies (such as HIV/AIDS and sexual health organisations), hospitals, and workplace employee assistance programs (EAPs).
>
Some of the reasons we don’t see our resolutions through is that we often set unrealistic, unreachable or unclear goals — “I’m not going to be unhappy in 2016”; “I’m not going to be overweight this year”; “I’m going to get a new job and a pay rise”; “I’m going to meet the person of my dreams”. Too often we think a lot about end goals, but don’t think about how we are going to reach or maintain them. In the realm of physical health such supports might include a personal trainer, a weight loss club, or a gym membership. At work, we might seek a mentor or enrol in professional development courses. In the sex and love stakes, we might decide to go on a date, or create a Grindr profile. However, it’s often the more esoteric and less tangible goals that seem harder to capture, and therefore harder to problem-solve. Why don’t I feel happy? Why do I seem unable to stay in a relationship? Why don’t I like myself? Why does everyone else have great families, and I can barely speak to mine? Sure, we might talk to our friends about this stuff, but sometimes the best source of support could be a stranger — a well-qualified stranger, that is. We go to a doctor when we feel physically uneasy or when we injure ourselves, but not all of us think of seeing a professional counsellor when our minds feel ill at ease, when we feel emotionally broken. If this year you want to feel emotionally stronger, less fearful, happier or more confident, or if you finally want to understand how your past impacts your present, then perhaps it’s time to consult a professional counsellor — someone who can help you with your mental wellbeing and emotional healing.

What can I get help for?
How do I find a competent mental health professional?
People seek assistance for all sorts of reasons — depression, anxiety, trauma related conditions (eg. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and stress management are some examples of common mental health issues. However, it can also be useful to talk through any other concerns you might have — such as parenting, relationship conflict, sexuality, gender questioning, communication problems, bullying and harassment, family of origin issues, fears, phobias, chronic illness, grief and loss, domestic and family violence, sexual abuse, addiction, and coming out.
ASK AROUND — you might be surprised at how many of your friends and family have seen, or know of, a good counsellor.
Note that psychologists, social workers and counsellors do not prescribe medication as part of their treatment. If you think medication might be helpful, you should see your GP or a Psychiatrist.
CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR — most GPs have a list of counsellors they recommend. Your GP can refer you, and you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate. GOOGLE — search for psychologists/mental health social workers or counsellors in your city or region. Many private mental health practitioners have websites and you can often get a “feel” for them by what’s on their site, as well as more detailed information on how they work and the areas they specialise in. AHPRA and AASW have “find a practitioner” pages on their websites too. CALL — phone the practice or practitioner and ask about their areas of expertise, their qualifications and experience, as well as fees, rebates, waiting times, cancellation policies and, if it’s important to you, whether they are experienced working with the LGBTIQ community and related issues. Once you have made your appointment, think about what you want from your counsellor and how you’d like your sessions to progress. If, after the first appointment or two, you don’t feel like you “click” with them, you have every right to consult someone else. It is important that you feel safe in your counselling sessions, and that the person opposite you is empathic and approachable.

> “It’s the relationship that heals.” Dr Irving Yalom, psychiatrist, psychotherapist and author.
What to expect The foundation of counselling is the relationship you have with your counsellor. Research shows that it is this relationship, rather than just the techniques the counsellor uses, that helps you learn about yourself and change. The major aim of counselling is to assist you to live your life the way you want to live, in line with your goals and values. Learning to be free of life-limiting problems is certainly one of the benefits of seeking help. However, in undergoing counselling, you may need to take risks — to talk about the not-so-pleasant or troubling aspects of your life. It’s quite normal to feel uncomfortable or upset. You might feel hopeless or helpless for a time, and you might struggle with making decisions. It’s important not to “give up” the process because it feels challenging. Regular review of your therapy goals will help you keep track of your progress and ongoing development. You should expect that your counselling process is confidential and private. No information about you should be disclosed without your permission. Your counsellor is bound by their professions’ codes of ethics and also by Australian privacy legislation. An exception to confidentiality is where your practitioner is required by law to disclose risk to yourself, or another person, to an appropriate agency. Always ask your counsellor about confidentiality and any limits that may apply.
Costs Costs of counselling vary, depending on the counsellor’s qualifications and experience; whether the client is eligible for a rebate; and whether the practice is private or government funded. There are also free counselling services available, some of which are listed in the resources below. Therapy is an investment in your life, your health and your future — so if there are goals you’d like to reach or issues you’d really like to get on top of this year, maybe give counselling a try. Good health to you in 2016!

WHERE DO YOU STUFF IT? WHO SAYS POCKETS ARE NOT FOR BRAS! Lululemon’s Stuff Your Bra and Tanks are your basic women’s fitness tops with sweat-wicking fabric and flat seams. The difference here is it has loads of added storage around the bust so you can stash your goodies. Stuffing things down your bra is not a new concept but having a purpose built pocket, well that’s another thing. So you’re off to the gym or for a run around the lake and you’re all geared up with your keys, phone, lip balm and wallet. If you are like me, most of it ends up uncomfortably shoved down your pants and socks somewhere. Until about halfway thought my run I usually end up with a handful of stuff as it’s actually easier, and more comfortable, just to hold onto my wallet and keys while I run. It’s far from ideal. And then I found myself in Lululemon, they make technical athletic clothes for yoga, running, working out, and most other sweaty pursuits. Pretty much all the things I love. After doing some additional research I discovered that Lululemon isn’t the first brand to add pockets to its sports bras and fitness tops. Objex Sports makes similarly designed items, and The North Face’s Stow-N-Go II bra features a front and centre pocket for “on-thego-access” to all of your mid-workout treats. The product notes say these type of sports bra are best for ladies with an A- or B- cup size, which makes sense, because if you’ve already got lots of bouncing happening, you really don’t need to worry about flying lip balms as well. But don’t stress if you are over a B cup because there are also fitness tops with practical pouches placed elsewhere, making them a more comfortable pick for busty gals. For example, most cycling jerseys are made with three rear pockets along the lower back, and the Oakley Stride Tech Tank has a zippered pocket along the hip. Of course, no matter where the compartment’s located, the key to successful pocket packing is not to stuff it with too many heavy items that will cause excessive bouncing. And, beware of cramming in too many little items, which can lead to awkward bulging and the possibility of things flying out! All said and done though, I feel it’s my goddess given right to stuff all manner of useful things in my cleavage.

DID YOU KNOW? Cinq à sept (literally, “five to seven”) is a French term for a visit to one’s mistress. It’s a cute name for stuff you do discreetly with someone other than your partner.
FREEHELD
5 TO 7
Although Freeheld didn’t receive the same critical reception as another 2015 lesbian drama, Todd Haynes’ Carol, it is still a timely and ultimately moving drama. Based on a true story, Freeheld was the passion project of Ellen Page. She plays mechanic Stacie Andree, who sets up home with her police detective partner, Laurel Hester (Julianne Moore). But when Laurel is diagnosed with cancer, her wish to have Stacie receive her pension is met with bureaucratic refusals, forcing the women — along with Laurie’s police partner, Dane Wells (Michael Shannon), and gay activist, Steven Goldstein (Steve Carell) — to begin a fight for equality.
A ‘cinq a sept’ affair is a French concept: those hours between finishing work and returning home where a married man will spend time with his mistress. It’s a completely foreign concept to aspiring New York novelist, Brian Bloom (Anton Yelchin, Star Trek), but when the married Arielle (a radiant Berenice Marlohe, Skyfall) proposes just such an arrangement he’s powerless to refuse; meeting her regularly for romantic afternoons. A 24-year-old man’s idyll perhaps, but even with Arielle’s husband’s knowledge and consent, Brian can’t help but want more. An American rom-com with a decidedly French flavour, 5 to 7 delights and amuses.
SLEEPING WITH OTHER PEOPLE
THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES
Billed as a “rom-com for the Tinder age”, Sleeping With Other People tackles that age old question: can men and women be friends without having their relationship complicated by sex? And what about Lainey (Alison Brie, from TV’s Community) and Jake (Jason Sudeikis, We’re The Millers), one-time college hook-ups who, 12 years later, meet at a sex addicts meeting and decide to be strictly friends without benefits? Director Leslye Headland’s previous film was the raucous Bachelorette, and while Sleeping With Other People does get a little blue, Brie and Sudeikis have a winning chemistry that keeps this comedy more romantic than sleazy.
A remake of the Argentinian film The Secret In Their Eyes, which won the 2009 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, this Hollywood version features just enough tweaks to keep the plot interesting for those who may have seen the original. It also helps that director Billy Ray has assembled a heavyweight cast for the remake. Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) and Nicole Kidman play an FBI detective and District Attorney, respectively, who work hard to bring to justice the killer of the daughter of an FBI ex-detective (Julia Roberts) before she can exact her own revenge.

PrEP IS SWINGIN’ INTO YOUR LOVE LIFE THE LITTLE BLUE TRUVADA PILL THAT CAN BE TAKEN AS PrEP (PRE-EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS) COULD BE ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING AND EMPOWERING TOOLS FOR FIGHTING HIV THAT WE HAVE SEEN. PrEP is medication taken prior to having sex, and stops HIV transmission from occurring. It is quickly becoming an essential part of many gay men’s options for managing their sexual health, even though it is not readily available in Australia. Truvada might sound familiar as it is the trade name for the drug combination Tenofovir Disoproxil and Emtricitabine, used to treat people living with HIV. Truvada can also be given to people who have been exposed to HIV as PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis). PrEP has been accessible in the United States since 2012 as a recommended method for stopping HIV transmission, but is still waiting for that same support here. Once upon a time, the idea that a pill could be taken to stop HIV transmission almost seemed like a fantasy. For PrEP to be successful it is a committed regime requiring consistent administering of medication, ideally every day. This can also seem counter-intuitive to provide the exact same medication for someone without HIV as something they might have to take for the rest of their lives if they became HIV positive. For a lot of guys this will not be a life-long treatment, but episodic, depending on variable life circumstances. Sex, pleasure and risk are subjective. Condoms are still a cornerstone for most people to keep themselves safe from HIV, as well as many other STI’s. However, there are some who for a range of reasons do not use condoms, or only do so irregularly. PrEP can give them much needed protection from HIV that they wouldn’t otherwise have.
While PrEP has been controversial because of an assumption that everyone will throw caution, and their condoms, to the wind, these concerns do not appear to be replicated in reality. PrEP works so well, that in 2011 the Partners PrEP trial was halted mid-study because it was no longer ethical to continue providing the placebo, and in 2015 the results of a 2.5 year study of 600 participants in San Francisco (99% were men who have sex with men) concluded zero HIV infections for those on PrEP. In Australia PrEP is only available through trials, such as EPIC NSW and VicPrEP, or by prescription. That prescription needs to come from an informed doctor and ideally full sexual health screening would be provided at the same time. As PrEP is not on the PBS it costs around $1000 for a month’s supply if purchased locally. This means having to source online pharmacies. Most AIDS Councils also have information to help and websites such as PrEPaccessNOW.com.au assist guys to connect to pharmacies. AIDS Councils across the country, with the support of Federal, State and Territory Governments, have committed to working towards the virtual elimination of HIV transmissions by 2020. This cannot be done with a business as usual approach to HIV health promotion. Australia can hold its head proud for the successful work achieved in limiting HIV from becoming a generalised epidemic during the 1980s, positioning us as a world leader in often controversial HIV prevention. The epidemic has changed, as have gay men, over the last 30 years. PrEP will not be for everyone, but everyone should be able to choose how they reduce their risk of getting HIV. For more information about PrEP please contact the AIDS Action Council on 02 6257 2855 or Canberra Sexual Health Centre on 02 6244 2184. HEALTH&WELLBEING

WHICH WINE GOES WITH YOUR MEAL?
A GOOD CANBERRA DROP OUR LOCAL WINE INDUSTRY IS BOOMING LOUDER THAN A DIVA AT MARDI GRAS AND WE KNOW THAT ANY SELF RESPECTING DRAG QUEEN LOVES A GLASS OF CHAMPERS OR TWO, ESPECIALLY IF IT HAS A FANCY NAME LIKE CLONAKILLA SHIRAZ VIOGNIER. But seriously, the secret is out in up-market Melbourne restaurants and The Wall Street Journal that a Mount Majura Graciano or a Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier are hotter than last summer’s fling. So forget scanning bottle shop isles for a South Australian or Victorian label, when Canberra’s cool climate wines compete with the lot. Canberra wines are tickling the fancy of critics worldwide and there is no better time to impress your friends — or yourself — with a tasty local drop. But how do you know which white, red, or blend is right for your night?
WHAT’S COOL ABOUT CANBERRA WINES? Shiraz and Riesling are the two most recognised wines from the Canberra Region with our winemakers winning awards Australia-wide. The result has not only been seen at dinner parties across the capital, but also from Christmas shoppers sending interstate friends a bottle of our finest.
WHAT’S IN STYLE THIS SEASON? A number of Mediterranean originated grapes are finding their way to consumers’ shelves right now such as sangiovese — an Italian red grape, which equates to a light, soft tasting wine perfect for heated days of summer; or Tempranillo — a Spanish originating grape new to the district. Chardonnays are coming back in style like suede and chokers — hopefully the second doesn’t last long! — from a point in the early 2000’s when they were mass produced, lowering the quality and receiving the flick from many wine drinkers. The modern day chardonnay is made with care in the Canberra Region, to maintain a high quality — something our local region’s winemakers take great pride in.
30
FOOD&WINE
Complex flavour and high acidity in your wine complement the flavour in the food you’re eating. Which is why our cool climate wines have struck it big in restaurants interstate — and even around the world. Three key climate contributors factor into Canberra’s delicious success of producing great wines: ample sunshine, a cool, dry autumn, and ‘Bateman’s Breath’ — an easterly sea breeze sweeping over the vineyards around dinnertime on hot summer days. Those cool nights help maintain higher acidity levels in the grapes, enhancing our wine’s flavour. For those carnivores amongst you, if you’re sitting down for a steak dinner or Sunday roast, crack a Canberra shiraz. The region’s conditions are ideal for a flavourful shiraz such as Lake George area’s 2014 Nick O’Leary Shiraz, which won NSW Wine of the Year 2015. Likewise, the 2014 Gallagher Shiraz and 2013 Collector Reserve Shiraz also pair perfectly with any red meat. Fruity Rieslings such as a Helm or Ravensworth match well with Asian food as the wine’s sweetness saddles up next to the food’s spices and acidity. For an afternoon platter of full-flavoured cheese, a chardonnay’s sticky texture maximises the taste. Lake George’s Lerida Estate chardonnays are a great example to match with Camembert or Brie. Thirty years ago when local winemaker, Ken Helm, showed a journalist around the Canberra Region’s wineries, one commented that there were some pretty reasonable drops being made here, but it was hard to find a premium one. Two years ago, that same journalist came back and told him all you can find are premium wines. “It’s bloody hard to find an average one.” Canberra’s wine industry has changed. It’s no longer the frozen plain scoffed at by farmers when ‘wine country’ was mentioned in the 1970’s. It’s now an award winning vineyard heaven tempting the tastebuds of connoisseurs all over. So next time you in the mood, spoil yourself with a local glass of vino. While not every wine is for every person, there is no doubt Canberra’s wine culture can help locate the perfect drop for you. When choosing the perfect wine it always helps to be able to taste and chat to a professional and, let’s face it, that’s just not going to happen at a bottle-o or the supermarket. The Canberra Wine House at The Dickson Tradies offers free wine tasting and boasts many fabulous local wines. If you would like help choosing your next ‘Good Canberra Drop’ pay them a visit. We urge everyone to drink responsibly and if you think you have a problem with drinking or would like more info about drinking wisely visit drinkwise.org.au

MY BLOOD PUMPING DATE WITH AN ASTRA!
IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR SOME FAST LOVE AND AN ADRENALINE PUMPING RIDE, LET ME INTRODUCE YOU TO THE PEPPY TURBO CHARGED HOLDEN ASTRA GTC SPORT. For some I’m quite sure this sounds like the perfect date :-) The Astra has sharp looks, it’s quick, sexy and has a slick tight gearbox. Yes, I’m still taking about a car. Under the hood you’ll find a 1.6 Direct Injection Turbo engine, with 147KW of power and the Torque is 280Nm. For those who are not technical, that is more than my 5.8 litre Falcon developed in the 80’s, oh and the Astra uses a quarter of the fuel to do it. We have come a long way! This translates to spritely performance, well matched to the 6 speed manual gearbox, but it does come as an auto depending on your driving preference. The gearbox has a light operation with short throws from the stick which makes for a thrilling ride

As with any sporty coupe, it not really suited to families and the rear seat is more for occasional use than the daily commute to school with lanky teenagers in the back. The rear seats do fold to increase luggage space, with a handy hatch in the rear armrest for long objects like skis. That way you can still take four people and a length of timber home from the hardware store. On our date, the Astra passed my Costco test with it’s sufficiently cavernous boot. The Astra comes in a fabulous blue, sporty red and a very happy yellow, which is my personal favourite. I found it’s sharp looks pleasing with it’s wide stance and a non-aggressive but meaningful first impression.
The part of my Astra date that stood out to me the most was the handling. It’s got sharp, pinpoint handling but not at the expense of a luxury feel. It really does seems to have a nice balance between “sporty” and “comfortable”. It’s a well considered compromise between ride and manoeuvrability. There is nothing worse than when comfort equals taking corners in a wet sponge, or if the cornering is razor sharp, but you need to get your dental fillings replaced when you get home. In my books, getting this balance right is a big plus. The Astra GTC coupe is well equipped with goodies, but I really would have liked to have seen a reversing camera. I personally feel they should be a standard inclusion in all cars, but having said that you can always have one installed later. The seats were nice, but my partner is a short guy and found reaching back for the seatbelt awkward, which is an issue with most two door coupes. 32

GET GOOD LIVE ADVICE WELL AS A NUMBERS GUY I ALWAYS ENJOY FUN STATS AND FACTS AROUND MONEY! 14 February 2016 celebrated the 50th anniversary of decimal currency in Australia. This new currency was nearly called ‘royals’ rather than ‘dollars’. Other proposed names included more exotic suggestions such as the austral, the oz, the boomer, the roo, the kanga, the emu, the digger, the quid, the dinkum and the ming (Menzies’ nickname). The original round 50 cent coin was originally made with 80% silver, but as the value of silver increased the coins’ bullion value became more valuable than its face value of 50 cents! They were withdrawn from circulation in 1969 and replaced with the 12 sided coin we use today.
MONEY IS CONNECTED TO OUR DAILY LIVES. WE TOUCH IT, SPEND IT (TAP, SWIPE AND INSERT IT), SAVE IT, AND PLAN HOW TO GET MORE OF IT. A slightly more serious fact is that less than 40% of people in Australia have sought formal financial advice from a professional with regards to their money. So how can a planner help?

YOUR PLANS AND GOALS FOR LIFE
YOUR WEALTH CREATION AND SUPERANNUATION
If you had enough money today to look after your needs now and into the future how would you live your life? What would you be doing and would you change anything in your life today? This is one of the three questions we ask every client we work with. It provides us with an understanding of what some of the key areas of importance are to them.
As part of your planning you should ensure you are taking money from today to invest in your future. The aim being that in the future those assets can generate your lifestyle income.
Money at the end of the day is a means to an end. Meaning that you do not want the pile of money, you want what it can provide for your life. I did some training with George Kinder (from the Kinder Institute of Life Planning) in 2006, who has written a few books on money maturity. This started a profoundly personal journey of living my own life plan but also gave me perspective to some of the challenges we all face on the day to day with our money.
As with all strategies it is important to get advice, as there are many tips and traps in this area, and it needs to connect your business and lifestyle plans together.
YOUR CASH MATTERS Cash flow without a plan can be lumpy; I often refer to it as a roller-coaster ride. If you don’t have a plan, the cash comes in and the bills due to be paid go out, which leaves money at the end of the day to run your lifestyle. On the flip side, if you have a plan and system in place for each pay this can create a way to pay yourself first and allocate money to cover your regular bills and debt reduction. Do your research and numbers around what running your day-to-day lifestyle costs you. This will help with creating targets for income generation so you can plan for future savings, or ways to generate passive income to achieve financial freedom and choice around work! Once you have a good system in place and surplus, it will give you a great foundation to take things to the next level.
It is important to get the balance right between investments for the future and enjoying lifestyle now — and there are taxation benefits in using leveraging strategies to build wealth, as well as contribution strategies to superannuation.
YOUR PLAN B To tie everything together it is critical to discuss your plans if things go wrong. As the saying goes “plan in times of peace for times of war!” Having a backup plan will ensure that you consider the risks you have in life and you can then create a strategy around these. Insurances can be a solution to transfer some of these risks. Having the right strategies in place is important so you are not paying for something that will not pay out when you expect it too. Good legal advice is also part of this process, ensuring you have an estate plan to protect your family and provide any wealth to the beneficiaries you want. Note that estate planning laws differ between jurisdictions, varying across countries and states, so you need to have strategies in place everywhere you have business or personal assets. Investing the time and energy in the right strategies and plans for your journey can help mitigate risk. It can give you an approach to achieve success and ensure you don’t break the bank along the way! Seek out further advice, and start your journey to being free around your money and creating wealth with understanding. EMAIL DEAR ROSE WITH YOUR PROBLEM
By Rose Pappalardo
Dear Rose, I’m a 43-year-old woman and I’ve never had a girlfriend. People say it’s doesn’t matter what you look like, but it seems to me it does. Am I doomed to be alone the rest of my life? Lindy
Dear Rose, My GF and I have been living in different cities for two years now. I’ve decided that it’s not for me but every time I try to break up she pretty much ignores me and changes the subject… why is it impossible to break up with this girl? TS
Dear Lindy, Let’s be clear, age is never a barrier for starting a new relationship. The things that make you attractive are qualities that are within you, which go beyond the physical after 40. Qualities such as intelligence, wit, confidence, sincerity, and honesty are the sexy qualities that people are looking for in a mature partner. Being older has the advantage of knowing who you are and what you need in a relationship. If you are concerned about your outside qualities hindering your opportunities, remember window dressing can be changed and enhanced. Changing just a few things in your life can also be cathartic and a catalyst for new experiences and new encounters with potential partners.
Dear Rose, My Boyfriend is hot… easily a 10. I think I’m like a 6. Other guys are constantly looking at him and I often find myself feeling like it’s only a matter of time before he finds himself another 10. He says I’m just being insecure and it not sexy and that would be the reason he leaves me — not my looks — so I better get it together. OMG what should I do? Sam
Dear Sam, Your BF is completely right; insecurity is not sexy and as difficult as this may sound, you will need to push past that ugly feeling of not measuring up, before it destroys your relationship! The reasons you are both attracted to each other are vast and varied and I’m hoping not just looks — this is what you need to focus on. This might seem a silly exercise to do, but both of you should sit down one night with two pieces of paper and list down what each of you love about each other. Post them on your fridge to remind you of the things that he loves about you and what you love about him. This exercise will keep things in perspective in those dark moments of insecurity. Remember, your attraction to each other is not merely about looks, it’s about the complete package.
‘‘
Dear TS, Two years of living in separate cities is a long time and with no end game in sight it’s hard to call it a relationship any more. There comes a time in every long distance relationship where the status quo just doesn’t work. Don’t get me wrong there are plenty of reasons why couples choose to live in separate cities, but usually these are short term with the specific purpose of eventually coming back together. Healthy relationships require two dedicated people that are in love. A good rule for balanced relationships is carving out; “your life”, “her life” and then “our life”. Relationships need late night conversations discussing hopes and dreams, your values and the way you both want to live your lives. Some of these things can be done on a short-term basis over long distances, but at some point you have to unite. Also consider changing your posture to a more assertive one. Change your thinking from “trying” to break up with her to actually “breaking up with her”. Discuss with her that two years is long enough and be honest about your expectations of the relationship. A big tip, try to be in the same city for this discussion, as it’s easy to fob off discussions over a phone, but much harder in person.
It takes no compromise to give people their rights...it takes no money to respect the individual. It takes no political deal to give people freedom. It takes no survey to remove repression.” Harvey Milk
