❂ LIVE PROUD THE PLEBISCITE IS DEAD! If you were just as sick as I was of hearing the words ‘same-sex marriage plebiscite’ then you’re probably just as happy that it’s finally dead in the water. It’s been utterly crazy that the Federal Government has been hanging this monumentally stupid idea over our heads, when marriage equality seems to me (and about 70% of other Australians) to be such a basic right. Even before any decision had been made about the proposed plebiscite, hate speech and anti-gay propaganda had already increased against LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) Australians. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s promise that the plebiscite would be conducted in a civil and respectful way, had already been pretty much undone.

Like many others, my greatest concern was the negative effects a plebiscite would have had on LGBTIQ people and families. The dangers of homophobia were recently highlighted in a new study which showed that sixteen percent of young LGBT people have attempted suicide and a third have harmed themselves — largely due to homophobic harassment — making them six times more likely to consider taking their own life than their heterosexual peers. Although things are better, the study found there is still widespread homophobic harassment, bullying and violence in schools, in the workplace and at sporting events.

It’s studies like these that make us realise just how dangerous a plebiscite would have been for vulnerable people in our communities — the Government not only sanctioning but paying for negative, closed-minded hate speech and homophobia. Much of this literature is about spreading fear, ignorance and unfounded lies about same-sex families being unhealthy, and attacking initiatives like the Safe Schools Program designed to stop bullying in schools and to support LGBTIQ youth. It is totally reckless to tell LGBTIQ Australians, and especially young people, that there is something wrong with them or their families just because of their sexual orientation or gender diversity. Thankfully commonsense has finally prevailed before so many people were put at risk from Government condoned homophobia. Love is love after all. Knowing this, it’s incredibly important that all LGBTIQ people feel OK with who they are and have unconditional support. So on a more positive note, summer in Australia brings a time where pride festivals start to happen all over the country. It’s a wonderful opportunity for LGBTIQ community members and allies to celebrate diversity and love while connecting with others. During November our nation’s capital will celebrate with the SpringOUT Pride Festival — and in this issue of FUSE you’ll find the line up of just some of the key events that are being held p06-10. HACKSAW RIDGE OPENS 3 NOVEMBER Regardless of his off-screen reputation and disgraces, there’s no denying that Mel Gibson is a terrific director. In just his third film behind the camera since winning the Oscar for Braveheart in 1995, Gibson has chosen to tell the story of army medic Desmond T. Doss (played by Andrew Garfield); the first conscientious objector to be awarded America’s Medal of Honour. Shot in Australia, the film graphically depicts the brutality of war but never fails to lose sight of the humanity of its hero; Garfield (The Social Network) giving a standout performance, and backed by an impressive Australian cast.

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM OPENS 17 NOVEMBER The Harry Potter film franchise may have ended five years ago but fans still can’t seem to get enough. With The Cursed Child currently selling out on both the stage and in book form, comes this new Potter film; set in New York and decades before the Boy Wizard was even born. Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl) plays Newt Scamander, whose adventures we follow, later detailed in the titular book which Potter nerds will know is taught to students of Hogwarts. David Yates, who directed the final four Potter films, is once again in charge of the movie magic.
ROGUE ONE : A STAR WARS STORY OPENS 15 DECEMBER A Star Wars story but not a sequel to last year’s The Force Awakens (we’ll see that film next Christmas), Gareth Edwards’ film is a prequel to the very first Star Wars film, A New Hope. Set in the lead-up to that film’s events, we follow Jyn Erso (Oscar nominee Felicity Jones), who joins the rebellion against the Empire and is tasked with the mission of retrieving plans for a weapon of mass destruction, the Death Star. Mads Mikkelsen and Forest Whitaker also star, but we’ll be most interested in seeing recent Emmy winner, Ben Mendelsohn (Animal Kingdom), as the film’s villain.
PASSENGERS OPENS 1 JANUARY If you’re going to repopulate the universe, then why not send two of Earth’s most photogenic and charming specimens? Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook) and Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) play members of a crew travelling 120 years to a distant space colony but, due to a computer malfunction, wake from their hibernation 90 years too early. As they try to unravel the mystery behind the malfunction, Aurora (Lawrence) and Jim (Pratt) begin to fall for each other, only to be threatened by the imminent collapse of the ship and the discovery of the truth behind why they woke up. Passengers is directed by Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game).

BEING QUEER IN INDONESIA Same-sex attraction in Indonesia is generally considered a taboo subject by Indonesian civil society. Public discussion of homosexuality has been inhibited by the fact that human sexuality in any form is rarely discussed or depicted.
INDONESIA TO BAN GRINDR AS IT CONSIDERS A BAN ON ALL SAME-SEX SEXUAL ACTIVITY Indonesian’s could soon see gay dating apps such as Grindr and up to 80 other social and LGBTIQ websites blocked as the nation’s government “cracks down on gays” and considers the criminalisation of homosexuality. Rita Hendrawaty Soebagio from the Family Love Alliance said, “We see the moral degradation that is happening — we must do something while we have a chance.” Indonesia’s defence minister has since declared that the LGBTIQ movement is “more dangerous than nuclear warfare.” Similarly the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission has banned all “gay propaganda” and also “effeminate males” from appearing on national television. As well as criminalising gay sex, the Family Love Alliance also wants the court to expand adultery laws to apply to couples who are not married, and to change the definition of rape to be gender-neutral. On top of all this the Presidential spokesperson of Indonesia, Johan Budi, also recently commented that “Rights of citizens like going to school and getting an ID card are protected, but there is no room in Indonesia for the proliferation of the LGBT movement.”

Calling on people to embrace “trust, solidarity and generosity”, he said the notion of home could not be confined within national borders. “It is not always easy to say where we are from, what nationality we are. PLEBISCITE FINALLY KILLED BY LABOR Labor Leader Bill Shorten has finally announced his party will block the Coalition Government’s plebiscite on same-sex marriage, saying Labor’s decision reflected the opinions of experts, mental health professionals, and the Australian LGBTIQ community. Instead, Labor and the Greens want same-sex marriage to be passed by Parliament immediately. In response the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has said if the plebiscite isn’t held, marriage equality could be off the agenda until 2019, which is when the next general election will be held.

BEING QUEER IN TANZANIA Sadly, men who have sex with men can be sentenced to life imprisonment. The semi-autonomous region of Zanzibar also outlaws same-sex sexual acts between women with a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment or a 500,000 shilling fine.

In all it’s apparent wisdom the African nation of Tanzania has banned the import and sale of sexual lubricants as part of a sustained crackdown on the country’s gay community. And it gets even more crazy with Health Minister Ummy Mwalimu telling local media that banning lube will also curb the spread of HIV because gay men won’t be able to have sex without it.
HIV advocates are celebrating the news that scientists working on a cure for HIV infection in the UK have had a massive breakthrough.
The ACT Labor Government has pledged $100,000 to take over funding for the Safe Schools Program in the ACT, countering changes imposed by the Federal Government. ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said, “The requirements the Commonwealth are putting on this funding are making it impossible to deliver an effective program.” He announced the ACT Government would instead take over funding of the program and allow Safe Schools to continue in its original form.
The ban of water-based lubricant directly contradicts UNAIDS recommendation that lube should always be distributed with condoms to prevent the spread of HIV in high prevalence areas.
A 44 year old British man could become the first person in the world to be cured of HIV after using a new therapy designed by a team of scientists from five UK universities. Scientists told The Sunday Times UK that presently the virus is completely undetectable in the man’s blood, although that could be a result of regular drugs. However, if the dormant cells are also cleared out it could represent the first complete cure.
USA : NEW TRANSGENDER RIGHTS LAW TAKES EFFECT IN MASSACHUSETTS A new law that prevents public places from discriminating on the basis of gender has taken effect in Massachusetts. The new bill allows trans people to use bathrooms and locker rooms that correspond with their gender identity. Republican Governor Charlie Baker signed the law in July after several years of disagreement. Advocates for the bill hope that trans people can no longer be discriminated against in public places. 12

OP. ED THE ORLANDO MASSACRE HAS AGAIN RAISED THE QUESTION OF WHETHER IT IS ETHICAL OR SENSIBLE TO RESTRICT GAY AND BISEXUAL MEN FROM DONATING BLOOD. Some of the most moving images that came after the Orlando massacre in June 2016 where those of thousands of people queuing to donate blood. In both the United States and Australia, men are only able to donate blood if they have abstained from sexual contact with another man for twelve months. This effectively places a ban on most gay and bisexual men. In Australia, a lifetime ban on blood donation by any man who had ever had homosexual sex was introduced in 1983. At this time, Australian states and territories also put in place legislation that made it a criminal offence not to disclose to the blood bank a history of male homosexual contact or injecting drug use. This ban occurred at a time when HIV testing technology was very new and often unreliable due to an extended “window period” — the lag time between someone contracting HIV and antibodies showing up in a blood test. But banning gay men from donating blood was also a political move.

RESTRICTING GAY MEN FROM DONATING BLOOD IS DISCRIMINATORY It allowed governments to demonstrate they were taking action in response to widespread public fears about HIV, much of which were directed toward gay men. Technology has significantly improved since the 1980s. Today the “window period” for blood testing is conservatively estimated to be around six to 12 weeks. Multiple testing methods are used to comprehensively screen for HIV and other blood-borne infections, meaning the risk of HIV being transmitted via donated blood is less than one in a million. By 2000, Australian blood donation regulations had been changed to allow for donations by men who had not engaged in homosexual sex for 12 months, generally referred to as a deferral period. The US and the UK have a similar twelve month deferral period, while other countries, including South Africa, have a six month deferral. Some countries, including Argentina, Italy and Spain, have no such bans and rely instead on individual risk assessments. In 2012, a study commissioned by the Australian Red Cross concluded that, as the vast majority of blood donors are compliant with safety regulations, there would be minimal risks associated with reducing the deferral period for homosexually active men to six months. RESTRICTING GAY MEN FROM DONATING BLOOD IS DISCRIMINATORY
It is worth noting that in Australia, there are no financial or other incentives to donate blood. Altruistic donation is associated with a safer blood supply. However, in 2014 the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) rejected a Red Cross submission to reduce the deferral period citing it would increase the risk of HIV being transmitted through the blood supply without a related increase in donors. On one hand, this can be seen as the TGA simply taking a cautious stance on the safety of the Australian blood supply. In 2014, 70% of people newly diagnosed with HIV in Australia had acquired the virus through male-to-male sexual contact. Men who have sex with men are at higher risk of acquiring HIV in Australia. But the counter argument is that placing restrictions on maleto-male sex reflects discriminatory and misguided attitudes toward gay and bisexual men — positioning them as inherently irresponsible and risky.

It is this lack of trust that reveals the subtle (and not so subtle) ways in which homophobia and discrimination plays out. Gay and bisexual men are not trusted to make responsible decisions about their own, or others’, sexual safety. Nor are they trusted to honestly disclose their likely sexual risk. This mistrust stems from a long-term cultural association between gay men, hedonism, irresponsibility and deviance. The TGA’s unwillingness to reduce the deferral period may be due to concerns that reducing restrictions on blood donation by gay and bisexual men could undermine public confidence in the safety of the blood supply. Understanding discrimination in the context of blood donation can be complicated because it is not clearly about human rights. One may not necessarily have a “right” to donate blood. It is on these grounds that gay advocacy organisations have been criticised for calling out blood donation bans as discriminatory.
A gay man who has been having safe sex, including within a monogamous relationship, is not necessarily at higher risk of acquiring HIV than a woman who has had multiple sexual partners and possibly unsafe sex.
But it is discriminatory to the extent that restricting men who have sex with men from donating blood reflects and reinforces the perspective that gay and bisexual men are unreliable and require strict laws to regulate their actions — laws that are not applied to other groups.
Yet a heterosexual woman is not banned from blood donation because she has had sex. Instead, heterosexual women are trusted to make their own assessment and accurate disclosure of their likely HIV risk. Gay and bisexual men are not.
The tragic irony, in the wake of the Orlando massacre, is that many people directly affected by this homophobic hate crime are prevented from offering help due to regulations that are in place, in large part, due to homophobia.

I always advise people to use credit with caution, however if you have a strategy and pay the card off every month, then it can be used to get you travelling sooner or even a cheeky upgrade to premium economy or business class. IF YOU RUN YOUR OWN BUSINESS YOU COULD LINK YOUR HOLIDAY TRAVEL TO A CONFERENCE OR BUSINESS TRIP If you run your own business you could link your holiday travel to a conference or business trip. Personally this is the first trip I have taken in a long time where we have travelled for pleasure only (much to my partners happiness). Once I am off the plane there will be very limited focus on business or work. However, if you don’t mind mixed trips, adding a business component to your next holiday or midweek getaway can most definitely save money. A good example comes from a client. She mentioned that she was heading off to an education conference in Hawaii next year, and was also desperate to find some time for an overseas holiday with her girlfriend and their two kids. This is where the magic happens, because by combining both her holiday and business trip she can travel for a whole lot less and also save on some tax. It is however important to note that the ATO will only allow you to deduct the portion which is related to the conference or business part of your trip. If you are undertaking business / personal travel, have a chat to your accountant to see what components of your trip can be paid for by the business — airfare, accommodation and food, for example — and how much. And remember it’s super important you keep your receipts and written evidence for expenses as well as a diary to track your business activity and personal. There are some other traps in this space so make sure you get the right advice and tread carefully.

Travelling this time of the year keeps flights and hotel costs cheaper as during June to August things are really expensive and it’s super busy with other tourists. A little bit of planning and flexibility can get you a much better holiday without the full price tag and the crowds. There are also some awesome flight tracker apps such as ‘on the fly’ where you can set up travel alerts to get the cheaper fares if you are planning ahead. For those regular FUSE readers you know I am a huge fan of AirBnB and Stayz. They can provide a great alternative to expensive hotels and you get to meet some locals, while really throwing yourself into the destination.

THE LEGEND OF TARZAN
SING STREET
There have been various incarnations of ‘the Lord of the Jungle’ throughout the decades but it’s arguable that none looked quite as good in a loincloth as Alexander Skarsgard does in this latest big screen iteration. The True Blood actor plays Tarzan, whom we meet having already ventured to London and ‘civilized’ society; Margot Robbie’s Jane providing a strong inducement for leaving the wild. But Tarzan is called home with news of a mining company’s suspicious activities threatening his jungle family. Samuel L. Jackson and Christoph Waltz are also along for the adventure, directed by David Yates (of the Harry Potter franchise).
With the Oscar winning success of the shoestring budget musical Once, and the delightful Begin Again (also Oscar nominated), Irishman John Carney has established himself as the writer-director of low-fi, heartfelt new millennium musicals. And Sing Street in no exception. Returning to Ireland, but this time in the 1980s, Carney’s film focuses on Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo), who, in order to escape his family troubles, and impress an older girl, forms a band with some fellow high school outsiders. The music is, of course, terrific (more so if you lived through the ‘80s), and only the hardest of hearts could refuse the film’s charms.

STONEWALL
A sequel-of-sorts to Ivan Sen’s critically-acclaimed Australian 2013 thriller Mystery Road, Goldstone sees the return of Indigenous detective Jay Swan (the always terrific Aaron Pedersen). Arriving in the frontier mining town of Goldstone on a missing persons enquiry, what seems like a simple investigation for Swan soon opens into a web of crime and corruption implicating the local mayor, mining boss and Aboriginal Land Council. Jacki Weaver, David Wenham and Alex Russell also star in the beautifully shot thriller that has more on its mind than mere thrills.
In between making his usual blockbuster fare (2013’s White House Down and this year’s Independence Day: Resurgence), openly gay filmmaker Roland Emmerich turned his hand to a more human story: the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York, and the birth of the modern gay rights movement. But because of the director’s decision to frame the story from the point of view of a fictionalised (white) character (played by War Horse’s Jeremy Irvine), the film suffered from a political and critical backlash. After skipping Australian cinemas, you can now watch and decide for yourself if Emmerich’s film does justice to those historical events or misses the point entirely.

VITA SACKVILLE-WEST AND VIRGINIA WOOLF MET AT A DINNER PARTY IN 1922. Prominent English novelist Vita Sackville-West’s marriage to Sir Harold Nicolson was the very definition of an open one, with both partners happily enjoying extramarital relationships for much of the 49 years they spent together. In the early 1920s, Vita began what was to be her most famous affair, with Virginia Woolf, the hugely influential author responsible for such classics as Mrs Dalloway and Orlando, the latter of which was based, in part, on Vita’s life. In January of 1926, Vita reluctantly departed England for four long months to join her husband, then a diplomat working in Persia. As she travelled by train, she wrote a longing letter to the lover Virginia which she had left behind in London.

I am reduced to a thing that wants Virginia. I composed a beautiful letter to you in the sleepless nightmare hours of the night, and it has all gone: I just miss you, in a quite simple desperate human way. You, with all your un-dumb letters, would never write so elementary a phrase as that; perhaps you wouldn’t even feel it. And yet I believe you’ll be sensible of a little gap. But you’d clothe it in so exquisite a phrase that it would lose a little of its reality. Whereas with me it is quite stark: I miss you even more than I could have believed; and I was prepared to miss you a good deal. So this letter is just really a squeal of pain. It is incredible how essential to me you have become. I suppose you are accustomed to people saying these things. Damn you, spoilt creature; I shan’t make you love me any the more by giving myself away like this — But oh my dear, I can’t be clever and stand-offish with you: I love you too much for that. Too truly. You have no idea how stand-offish I can be with people I don’t love. I have brought it to a fine art. But you have broken down my defences. And I don’t really resent it. However I won’t bore you with any more. We have re-started, and the train is shaky again. I shall have to write at the stations — which are fortunately many across the Lombard plain. Venice. The stations were many, but I didn’t bargain for the Orient Express not stopping at them. And here we are at Venice for ten minutes only — a wretched time in which to try and write. No time to buy an Italian stamp even, so this will have to go from Trieste. The waterfalls in Switzerland were frozen into solid iridescent curtains of ice, hanging over the rock; so lovely. And Italy all blanketed in snow. We’re going to start again. I shall have to wait till Trieste tomorrow morning. Please forgive me for writing such a miserable letter. Vita

Anyone who thinks this is just crazy, because lesbians (like all people) come in all shapes, sizes, colours, ages and styles — this is just a stereotype that does not stand up to reality. But alas your friend has gone out and cut her beautiful hair in the hopes that it may attract a potential girlfriend. Don’t be too hard on your friend, maybe she was looking for a change in style, a leap into something new and fresh, as we all do from time to time. On a positive note, hair does grow back and maybe by then she’ll see that stereotypes can be very damaging and often hold us back.

Dear Ming-Na, Clearly your girlfriend’s comments clearly aren’t helping or you would’ve been a size 6 by now. As someone who has swung from size 16 to a size 8 I can tell you no amount of reminding will actually help you shift the weight. I suggest you have a very candid talk to your partner and let her know that her words are very hurtful and unhelpful. If you listen to the professionals you realise that it’s not an issue of body image, it’s really about what is healthy and what is not. So start thinking in terms of “healthy” rather than “skinny” — it takes away the pressure of unrealistic expectations we set for yourselves. I suggest getting some professional help as losing weight will bring you a range of important health benefits. The key to success is making realistic changes to your diet and level of physical activity that can become a part of your daily routine. Good luck and stay positive.
Dear Rick, Clearly you are an independent guy who is used to doing your own thing. Whilst there are expectations within relationships, there are also limits and you need to decide what is reasonable. There are two ways you can deal with it, either you can wait and see if it’s something that settles down or you can have an up-front conversation and discuss boundaries that are comfortable for you. It’s also important, especially if you want to continue the relationship, to ask him what his expectations are regarding this particular issue. Your new BF obviously has some trust issues, which may be something you can address with him. I suggest you look at both your own and his expectations, and find the compromise that sits somewhere in the middle.
