A new, multi-year initiative funded by the ACT Government that will contribute to a community where LGBTIQ+ people are healthier, more resilient, and have a stronger community identity, improved social capital and increased connection.

ABOUT THE CANBERRA INCLUSIVE PARTNERSHIP The AIDS Action Council is lead agency for a partnership of community organisations committed to building a more inclusive Canberra.

WORKING TOGETHER FOR A BETTER FUTURE FOR ALL We work alongside the ACT Government, and in partnership with sex and gender diverse communities and their families, to ensure our communities have access to safe spaces and competent, inclusive services.

Our organisations are embedded in the communities we serve. The AIDS Action Council and A Gender Agenda are peer-led organisations and all members of the partnership have a strong history of working with and responding to the diverse needs of sex and gender diverse people, families, and communities.

Although most sex and gender diverse people lead healthy and fulfilling lives contributing to their families, local communities, workplaces and societies, sex and gender diverse people continue to experience stigma, discrimination, abuse and violence. This minority stress has a profound impact on health and wellbeing. The partnership aims to reduce health disparities between sex and gender diverse communities and the wider population by increasing access to inclusive and competent services and support. This includes 1000 hours of peer-led psychosocial support services to LGBTIQ+ people and their families.

BUILDING THE CAPACITY OF ACT SERVICES TO RESPOND TO THE NEEDS OF SEX AND GENDER DIVERSE COMMUNITIES We provide a range of services to support community organisations, government agencies and health services to strengthen their existing services, support and products.

By working together, we can respond to identified needs and service gaps, while meeting the complex, diverse and intersectional needs of sex and gender diverse people, their families and communities.

This includes 100 hours of training and tailored support to build the capacity of mainstream service providers to deliver inclusive and appropriate services to LGBTIQ people, their families and communities. The initiative will also establish a specialist LGBTIQ Service Network to improve communication and collaboration between services and organisations working with LGBTIQ people, families and communities.

AIDS ACTION COUNCIL THE COUNCIL IS A PEER-BASED, GRASS-ROOTS ORGANISATION WORKING IN THE ACT AND SURROUNDING REGIONS TO BUILD STRONG, CONNECTED AND SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITIES THAT ARE FREE OF NEW HIV TRANSMISSIONS, MARGINALISATION, DISCRIMINATION AND STIGMA. At the Council, we provide a range of services to people living with and impacted by HIV, LGBTIQ people, their families and communities.

We also offer counselling and peer-support services and host community events, including the much-loved annual Fair Day. We have been working alongside people living with and impacted

by HIV, LGBTIQ people, and our partner organisations for over 30 years to eliminate HIV and improve outcomes for people living with HIV. We educate our community about HIV, promote and support HIV testing and early treatment, and support at-risk communities to protect themselves and their partners from HIV. We have been fierce advocates for new technologies, such as PrEP, to give our community members the tools they need to keep themselves safe.

As a peer-based organisation, our team have specialist expertise in working with the communities we serve. Our peer-based approach is complemented with an evidence-based approach, to ensure our services are effective and respond to the emerging needs of our community members. To create more inclusive communities, we also offer education and training about diverse identities and experiences, including sex, gender, and diverse sexual orientations.

POSITIVE SERVICES We provide counselling, case-management, peer-navigation, advocacy, and referral services to people living with HIV through all stages of their lives and diagnoses. These services are peer-led, professional, and delivered in a safe, non-judgmental space. We also create opportunities for people living with HIV to connect with their peers through programs such as the Peer Support Network, informal social gatherings and engagements, and through interactions with peers when accessing services.

WESTLUND COUNSELLING We deliver peer-led, professional counselling to LGBTIQ people and their families and communities. Our counselling service offers a safe, LGBTIQ-friendly space, where everybody can feel comfortable to be themselves, knowing that they will always be accepted and supported. Our team are all qualified and registered counsellors, with experience using a wide range of therapies to respond to the diverse needs of our clients. Drawing on their lived experience as members of LGBTIQ communities, our counsellors build empathetic relationships based on a deep understanding of the added stresses that come with being part of a minority community. We specialise in counselling for people who are struggling with their mental health, navigating their sexuality, gender and sex, experiencing same sex domestic violence or homophobic violence, or experiencing relationship and family issues. We also work with LGBTIQ people through a range of personal stresses and challenges unrelated to their gender identity, sexual orientation, or sex characteristics.

PEER-EDUCATION AND SUPPORT Our staff work with a fantastic team of volunteers to provide peer-led education and support to people living with HIV, LGBTIQ people, and sex workers. Our regular, peer-led workshops and groups cover a range of topics, and they provide an opportunity to discuss important personal and community issues in a safe, respectful and confidential environment.

Peer-workshops and support groups include: •

Mature Aged Gay Men’s Network — a regular social group for gay, bisexual and same sex attracted men 40 years and older.

• Genesis — peer-support for people newly diagnosed with HIV. •

Sex positive workshops — peer-led workshops for gay, bisexual, same sex attracted, and men who have sex with men, that explore dating, relationships, sex, pleasure, health and safety — including online safety.

• Stepping Out workshops — a regular social group for lesbian, bisexual and same sex attracted women.

•

Sex Worker Outreach Program (SWOP) — a peer-led outreach service that educates sex workers about safe sex practices. SWOP also lobbies for more for robust and supportive legal frameworks and the eradication of discrimination against sex workers.

A GENDER AGENDA A GENDER AGENDA (AGA) IS A PEER-BASED COMMUNITY ORGANISATION THAT WORKS WITH, AND ADVOCATES FOR INTERSEX, TRANS AND GENDER DIVERSE PEOPLE. AGA is a unique organisation actively engaged in promoting public awareness and understanding of the Intersex, Trans and Gender Diverse Community. In addition to training and education, AGA provides advocacy and support services, information and resources and is actively engaged in human rights and law reform.

AGA delivers intersex, trans and gender diverse training and education in our local community, to build capacity and to help reduce barriers and discrimination for intersex, trans and gender diverse people.

SHFPACT is Canberra’s sexual health promotion charity, working to improve sexual and reproductive health in the Canberra community for more than 40 years.
