101+ Things to do and see

101+ Things to do and see with West Coast Way Download our free smartphone app to find the 101+ things to do and see fast and easy.

Places to visit Melkbosstrand Melkbosstrand means 'milk bush beach' because of the Euphorbiaceae bushes on the sand dunes which give off a milky latex-like substance. It’s the quintessential seaside village with a variety of amenities. The long white beach is ideal for leisurely strolls, family fun and is a kite surfing hot-spot. Yzerfontein Yzerfontein is a fauna and flora haven which also boasts South Africa's longest beach at 25.7km. Here, a myriad of activities await including surfing, kite surfing, beach horse rides and seasonal whale watching. In spring, the Bokbaaivygie flower trail explodes into kaleidoscopic colour while the Schaapeiland coastal trail offers breathtaking views over the Atlantic Ocean. Silwerstroomstrand In a wonderfully secluded setting, the blue flag-rated Silwerstroomstrand beach has excellent water quality, a tidal pool and a nearby slipway to launch leisure craft. Relax at one of its picnic sites or braai areas. The resort falls within the Cape West Coast Biosphere Reserve and also borders the Koeberg Nature Reserve. Langebaan Known as the jewel of the West Coast, the picturesque and tranquil town of Langebaan offers a fascinating array of fauna and flora, delicious seafood and azure-blue waters bordered by white sandy beaches. Its main attractions include sailing, kayaking, kite surfing and fishing. It’s also an international Ramsar wetland site with many local and migratory bird species. Saldanha The historical naval town of Saldanha is first choice for water sport lovers and a popular venue for regattas. Natural attractions include Adam and Eve, two massive granite vertical rocks on the mountainside which ‘guard’ the town. The SAS Saldanha Nature Reserve is a spring floral wonderland, while the Hoedjeskoppie Nature Reserve has traditional fisherman cottages.

Issue 02

Churchhaven and Kraalbaai One of the West Coast’s best kept secrets is Churchhaven in the West Coast National Park. This quaint little fishing village has picture-perfect, white-washed fishermen's cottages and a stunning beach on the shores of the Langebaan Lagoon, perfect for families and water sport fanatics. Hopefield Originally a church community founded in 1853, Hopefield lies in the heart of fynbos country. Historical attractions include a church built in 1879, traditional homes and Cape Dutch homesteads. The large wetland has prolific bird life, while Elandsfontein is a famous fossil site, home to the ‘Saldanha’ man’s skull and primordial animals. Jacobsbaai Founded on a farmland, Jacobsbaai boasts a stunning sea frontage of 2km with seven different bays. Its coastal fynbos supports a variety of small wildlife and surfing, fishing or watching the Oystercatchers and cormorants basking on the rocks is the order of the day. The sandy beach in Hospital Bay is ideal for family outings. Paternoster Paternoster is one of the oldest fishing villages on the West Coast and famous for its crayfish. Watch fishermen head out in traditional wooden boats and then buy their fresh wares at the small fish market. It’s also the ideal destination for divers, kite surfers and flyers, hikers, bikers, kayakers and art lovers. Shelley Point This tiny escapist’s peninsula gives the illusion of being an island surrounded by sea. It’s ideal for sailing and fishing and offers safe water fun for the whole family. Attractions include a 9-hole golf course and spa, while the hotel has a bowling green, tennis courts, running trails, beach walks, sunset picnics and a gym. St Helena Bay With a pristine coastline and sparkling surf, St Helena Bay is the ultimate year-round outdoor destination. For yachtsmen, canoeists, surfers, birders or fishermen, it doesn’t get any better than this. Its calm waters also provide an abundance of

food for the resident dolphins and Southern Right whales. Tietiesbaai The calm waters of this sheltered beach cove make Titiesbaai in the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve a popular playground for campers, fishermen and families. The campsite offers convenient caravan or tent seafront sites and uses conservation-friendly solar panels for hot water. Vredenburg Vredenburg is the commercial hub of the West Coast and has the area’s only mall. It was first named Twisfontein (‘Quarrel Spring’) and later Prosesfontein (‘Lawsuit Spring’) because the rights to the spring caused so many disputes as water is a scarce commodity here. Peace finally won and the town was promptly renamed Vredenburg, or ‘Peaceful Town’.

Nature Reserves Blaauwberg Nature Reserve The Blaauwberg Nature Reserve has spectacular views across the cityscape and coastline, including one of the few in the world where you can see two World Heritage Sites; Table Mountain and Robben Island. Its wetland has an abundance of plant, mammal, bird and reptile species, as well as various amphibians. The West Coast National Park Established in 1985 with conservation in mind, the entire West Coast National Park is an internationally acclaimed Ramsar Site. For fauna lovers, it’s a paradise with over 200 bird species as well as eland, springbok, kudu, gemsbok and the rare Mountain zebra. The area is also rich in fossils recording human occupation dating back to the Holocene Age. Buffelsfontein Game & Nature Reserve Situated in the heart of the West Coast, this reserve offers game drives to view a variety of buck, lion, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest – also look out for the African wildcat, lynx and Honey badgers. Accommodation is right near the waterholes to view animal sundowners up close and personal.

Waylands Wildflower Reserve The Waylands Wildflower Reserve, founded in the early 1900s, is part of the critically endangered Lowland Fynbos Biome, of which less than 1% remains. It’s also an integral component of Waylands’ Nguni free-range cattle farming. The rustic guesthouse offers five en-suite bedrooms, braai facilities and a pool. Tienie Versveld Wildflower Reserve This little flower reserve is best known for its massive displays of spring flowers and year-round bird spotting of Cape Longclaw, Spur-winged goose, African Pipit, African Stonechat and Bokmakierie. It’s also a unique remnant of grassland, fynbos and a seasonal wetland within the Swartland, and particularly valued for its bulbous plants. Darling Renosterveld Wildflower Reserve The Darling Renosterveld Reserve is one of the best places to see a variety of Renosterbos, an array of birds and the red bellied tortoise. If spring is your thing, then pop in, you’ll see the landscape transform into a colourful carpet. The reserve also hosts the annual, century-old Darling Wildflower Show. Postberg Flower Reserve Even though it’s part of the West Coast National Park, the Postberg Flower Reserve is not always open to make sure it’s as undisturbed as possible until spring, when it truly rewards the wait. Keep an eye out for zebra, wildebeest, antelope, ostrich, mongoose, Rock hyrax, snakes, birds, and tortoises. Verlorenvlei Lagoon, Elands Bay This majestic ‘Scottish loch-like’ lagoon is the largest on the West Coast and one of the most important estuarine systems in the Cape.
