Tech Starter Five By John Sciacca Tech Starter Five was moderated by Walt Zerbe, senior director of technology and standards, CEDIA, and the judging panel included Tabatha O’Conner, global president and CEO, CEDIA; Alex Capecelatro CEO and founder Josh.ai; and Hagai Feiner CEO and founder, Access Networks. Together, the panel was on the hunt for up-and-coming companies that could have a significant impact the industry. In total, 17 companies were given five minutes to present and were judged based on the following questions: Does the company’s product solve a problem and meet a need in the market? Does it have product viability? Is there funding? Is it innovative? How was their presentation and branding? Bonus points were awarded for the overall “wow!” factor. The five finalists chosen were SoundTrap Audio, Konnected.io, Artio Lighting, Caavo and Hero Labs; the heads of these companies were invited up on stage to discuss the company history and what need their products address in the market.

Hero Labs, winner of the Tech Starter competition, was presented with a check for $2,500 to help grow its business. Size and Scope Report Reveals Market Opportunities

» SHOW NEWS

Today’s CEDIA Talks

By Matt Pruznick Confidence is high and there’s plenty of revenue opportunities in systems integration in the next 12 months—but to make the most of it will require a bit of a shift in strategy. That was the takeaway from CEDIA’s Size and Scope Manufacturer presentation on Friday morning, in which Grant Farnsworth, partner and director of business development at the Farnsworth Group, shared his company’s research on the construction and home improvement space. Farnsworth began with a look at the housing market, which is experiencing a household growth rate of 1.4 million per year, a healthy indicator of opportunity. However, the rate of new construction is down and people are choosing to remain in their homes for longer. The luxury market, as defined by homes valued at $800,000 and higher, is particu- Grant Farnsworth, partner and director of larly saturated, and entry-level homes, valued at $250,000 business development at the Farnsworth and below, have the highest demand. “Most sales happening Group right now in the new housing market are entry-level homes,” Farnsworth said. “And those buying entry-level homes are Millennials.” Aside from changing markets, other challenges facing the industry include difficulty in finding qualified employees and competition from DIY solutions. “This remains a big challenge for our industry and continues to grow,” Farnsworth said. “Do-it-yourself products are coming out fast, and consumers believe they work.” Nevertheless, confidence among builders, consumers, and integrators is high, with 76 percent of businesses believing that their revenue will increase over the next 12 months. “Peoples’ mindspace right now is really, really positive,” Farnsworth said. “They feel comfortable spending.” So where are they looking to spend? As the average size of homes in the U.S. decreases, the number of home theater and media room projects is decreasing. However, there has been substantial growth in the outdoor entertainment systems, and whole-home automation systems and lighting systems, despite showing a decrease in number of installations, have experienced a tremendous rise in revenue over the last two years. Perhaps the greatest opportunity revealed in the presentation is in the installation of connected security and “healthy home” systems, a category that’s especially in demand among the prime entrylevel market and whose revenue has also risen sharply over the past two years. “The younger they are, and especially if they have kids, the more concern they have over well-being, safety and security,” Farnsworth said. “This is a really powerful thing to know when we realize that 75 percent of first-time home buyers are Millennials.”

Musing on Life & Dreams, Horn Energizes WiCT Luncheon By Megan A. Dutta On Friday afternoon, Women in Consumer Technology (WiCT) hosted its 11th Annual CEDIA Expo Luncheon at the Colorado Convention Center. The luncheon, which had around 350 attendees, served as a vehicle for networking and also as a learning opportunity as keynote speaker Sam Horn shared tips from her new book Someday is Not a Day in the Week. Carol Campbell, the group’s founder, kicked off the event, which she labeled as the “most important part of the day at CEDIA Expo,” honoring Bonnie Perella of Legrand AV as WiCT’s Volunteer of the Year. She then introduced Horn, Sam Horn speaks at the WiCT who gave a motivational speech about the power of living a CEDIA Expo luncheon. meaningful life. For her new book, Horn interviewed thousands of people from all around the world and asked them questions like “On a scale of one to 10, how happy are you?” and “Are you leading a meaningful and purposeful life?” Horn discovered that people often didn’t pursue their dreams because they believed their responsibilities were holding them back. “What if doing more of what put the light on in our eyes is not mutually exclusive with being responsible?” Horn pondered. “What if we can take care of our work and our families and get crystal clear on what would give us something to look forward to?”

Leon Ente SoundTile Turns Audio Into Art BOOTH 2943 Art and audio in one, Leon’s Ente SoundTile may look like a piece of art, but behind the grill are two channels of reference-grade audio by Leon and power by the SONOS AMP. The ideal way to add a discrete zone of audio to any Sonos home, this plug-and-play solution brings enhanced sound and style to Sonos. Each 36-inch by 36-inch tile is handcrafted out of Baltic Birch, and finished in either Matte Black or Matte white with exposed front edges. Within the frame are two of Leon’s reference-grade speakers from their Ultima line and a SONOS AMP. A perforated metal grill with screen printed artwork is then

DA-LITE 905 Parallex Stratos 1.0 ALR Engineered for high-value residential projects, the contrast-based Da-Lite Parallax Stratos 1.0 ambient light rejection (ALR) surface is made of gray fabric that rejects 80 percent of ambient light with 1.0 gain for standard throw projectors (1.0:1 or greater). The result is vastly better image contrast, color saturation, and dynamic range than a matte white screen, particularly in a room that is not completely dark.

DIGITAL PROJECTION

Satellite Modular Laser System Featuring pure RGB Laser Illumination, this forward looking projector technology advancement separates the light source, with its associated power and thermal management, to a remote location, thus enabling a small, compact projection “Head” that only contains the minimal optical processing. The Satellite MLS offers widely customizable system configurations, all producing superb color gamut, contrast and virtually silent operation for complex display environments.

These solutions remove messy, space-consuming, unreliable wall warts and other power clutter from the design and provide maximum power to support a multitude of devices in North American and European residential installations. The new 200W and 300W models boast the

same color-coded screw terminal connector platform introduced with the 45W and 125W models while providing high-current capacity to an extensive number of outputs (up to 24), maximizing the same voltage in a single unit (5V, 12V or 24V) or splitting between 12V and 24V. As many systems employ the same types of equipment, the latest DC Power Distribution allows for a high density of products with the same voltages.

On Thursday afternoon, the CE Pro All-Star Band reunited after over a decade. Camila Bellario from Leon Speakers (right) was the lead vocalist. She was joined by Geoff Meads of Prestro Web Design (center), Kevin Kent of Harman (left), and a host of other AV professionals.

MQA, BOOTH 2520 MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) continues to assert itself in the world of high-res streaming, most recently in NAD Electronics’ (a Lenbrook brand) acclaimed M10. In its simplest form, the M10 is an ultrahigh-performance BluOS-enabled streaming amplifier with great audiophile sound. Or it can be combined with other players in a BluOS ecosystem of wirelessly networked music players throughout the home for a wholehome audio system. BluOS, the powerful wireless multi-room Bluesound music management software, supports MQA, the new standard for high-res streaming. A classy product deserves a classy presentation, and MQA gave it just that at its booth, as MQA’s Ken Forsythe (left) and Lenbrook’s Gord Simmons held court for curious visitors.

Exhibitors Turned On The Lights (And The Rest Of The House) At Design + Connection Tour By Grant Morgan Friday morning’s Design + Connection Tour showcased impressive hardware and software innovations that open doors for designers and integrators, allowing them to collaborate even more to serve their customers. While we can’t describe everything we saw, below are the top products or announcements that caught our attention during the tour. Be sure to visit these exhibitors to learn more.

Control4

Booth 3013

Standout Product/Announcement: Control4’s release of Smart Home OS 3 is all about the user experience, and Control4 has taken great strides to simplify the interface even more. This enables users of all tech levels to take control of every aspect of their lighting, audio, video and comfort systems. We were particularly impressed with the ability to control everything you can on the control panel from the television remote.

Séura Booth 501 Standout Product/Announcement: Séura specializes in outdoor and waterproof and element resistant

televisions, and showcased their Shade and Ultra Bright series. The Shade series is perfect for outdoor or covered areas in full or partial sunlight, and are up to 60 percent brighter than indoor TVs. The Ultra Bright line has 1000-nit brightness and is 55 percent brighter than previous designs.

Samsung

Savant

CED19_DAY3_live.indd 44

Booth 1500

Standout Product/Announcement: Savant showcased their powerful lighting offerings and discussed ways designers and integrators can collaborate to help achieve the designer’s vision. The Savant app gives designers and users a significant amount of control over the lighting temperature. Users can even program rooms with their own schedule, allowing light temperature to adjust automatically to fit the time of day, or situation, that provides the best lighting options.

Lutron

Alan Nast from Séura speaks on the Design + Connection Tour.

Booth 1013

Standout Product/Announcement: While we were awestruck with Samsung’sThe Wall, what really caught our designer eye was the Frame TV. Rather than have a black void on a wall when the TV is off, Frame TVs are loaded with fine art that can be displayed, adding to the atmosphere of rooms. Samsung offers a $0.99 monthly subscription service with thousands of fine art images to choose from, or users can upload their own images to display. Extra features to customize the Frame TV include frame add-ons in a variety of colors that are easily interchangeable and digital matte placement, style and color options.

Booth 2501

Standout Product/Announcement: Lutron constructed a mini apartment called the Luxury Sanctuary to give visitors a day-in-the-life experience. The demo shows off the coordination between Lutron’s lighting, switches, shades and other devices, and how they

can blend into the environment without disturbing the aesthetics of a room.

Sonance

Booth 2507

Standout Product/Announcement: Sonance recently acquired James Loudspeaker, leading to a rebranding that happened right before CEDIA Expo 2019. Sonance products are known for being “designed to disappear,” and we saw how well that could be done with the company’s offerings. It was obvious that the company paid attention to making a comfortable listening experience, particularly with Sonance’s ability to match lighting and speaker shape so it didn’t disturb the flow of the room.

Josh.ai

Booth 4319

Standout Product/Announcement: Josh.ai launched as a company about four years ago in CEDIA’s Innovation Alley, and been available for the past year. The impressive thing about Josh.ai, beyond their dedication to security and privacy, is everything can be accomplished by users vocal commands. A control system is still in place, but Josh.ai works well with custom spoken commands, such as, “Josh, turn off the lights in 10 minutes,” or “Josh, open the shades a little.” Additionally, Josh.ai has models that plug directly into a wall outlet, making it easier on existing home integrations.

Future Automation

Booth 3820

Standout Product/Announcement: Being in this room was like being in a spy movie where the displays come out of the walls of an ordinary room because Future Automation specializes in indoor/outdoor equipment concealment. The star of the booth is a fully-functional deck that folds up to reveal a large TV, while two speakers emerge from integrated pillars next to it. Plus a deck floor lifts up automatically to fill the space where the TV once was.

DAY THREE ISSUE » CEDIA 2019 SHOW DAILY « 45

Showcasing Startup Innovation By Matt Pruznick Long before they grew into industry leaders with sprawling trade show booths, the giants of the CI channel were once but small companies with great ideas. CEDIA Expo is doing its part to foster the next wave of tech trailblazers with its Innovation Alley, and the results have been positive. Located toward the back end of the show floor, Innovation Alley is a showcase of 22 up-and-coming companies, many of which are exhibiting at CEDIA Expo for the first time. One of these is local Colorado business Emporia Energy, which earlier this year launched its first product, the Vue smart home energy monitor. “It’s been going really well, we’re getting a lot of great traffic,” said Marty Stadelmaier, the company’s director of strategic partnerships. “A lot of folks are interested in what we’re doing. It’s reinforcement that we’re heading down the right track.” Orlando, FL-based Konnected is also making its debut at this year’s Expo. “This is our first time at CEDIA Expo, it’s our second trade show ever,” said Ben Lebson, electrical engineer at the company, which develops sensors that connect old, pre-wired security systems to leading home automation systems. Currently operating in the DIY space, Konnected is looking to get into the custom install market, which led them to the show. “[Exhibiting] has been great. We’ve been getting a lot of interest, especially with some of the higher-end home automation platforms.” The show also been a worthwhile experience for A Cloud of My Own. Based in Cambridge, MA, the company provides network and IoT device security for smart homes, with the aim of protecting smart

devices from hackers. “We’ve made great connections with folks, potential partnerships as well as interest from installers,” said Jay Hartley, the company’s CEO and founder. “For a first-time exhibitor, we wanted to see the value that CEDIA would bring to us,” said Michael Li of doqxD, an Atlanta-based manufacturer of accessories for smart home devices, particularly Google. “We’ve definitely found a lot of attendees who have an interest in accessories. It’s a win-win: we help the installers learn about how they can increase their business, and they learn about Google’s new smart displays.” As a developer of backend software server and design tools for custom control and automation systems, Washington-based CIWare Labs has succeeded in getting some promising leads as a first-time exhibitor. “I’ve found the show riveting,” said Todd Bartleson, the company’s senior software engineer. “Everybody’s got something really interesting to say. There’s lots of cool ideas and technologies and tricks here, and I’ve been very impressed by that so far.”

ATLANTIC TECHNOLOGY, BOOTH 3704 Atlantic Technology gets serious about home theater subwoofers, with its new flagship SBT-1000 subwoofer, expanding its extensive range of in-room subwoofers to suit higherperformance large room two-channel or home theater systems. Featured are dual long-throw composite cone drivers, each with a vented motor structure and hightemperature, two-inch, four-layer voice coil, and driven by patented Audera Class LH high-efficiency linear hybrid amplifiers. The flagship powered 1,000-watt dual 12-inch SBT-1000 is shipping to dealers now.

ALCONS AUDIO, SR-13 Alcons Audio’s CRMSC-SRHV/120 surround is a two-way passive-filtered full-range loudspeaker, designed to meet all requirements of current and future cinema surround sound formats. It features a pro-ribbon HF driver and a 6.5-inch vented Neodymium woofer. The waveguide is revolvable due to its H 120-degree x V 90-degree dispersion. Featuring the patented Alcons pro-ribbon driver technology, the CRMSC-SRHV surround combines clarity and intelligibility with high dynamic range, offering a realistic sound reproduction.

Severtson: New ALR Options

LIBERTY AV SOLUTIONS, BOOTH 2120 There’s no shortage of new technology at the Liberty AV Solutions booth this year. Among the spotlighted products commanding the attention of booth visitors is the new Digitalinx Pro Series 18G HDMI 2.0 100m 4K60 Scaling HDBaseT transmitter with Toslink Audio out (model DL-PXC100TX-H2). Features include integrated up/ down scaling up to 4K60 and built-in test pattern generator; support for HDR10; HDCP 2.2 compliant; and flexible power design (use power supply at TX or RX). At the Liberty exhibit yesterday, James Blumhardt waxed eloquently on the wide range of new products the company is rolling out now.

BOOTH 1826 Severtson Screens is featuring its new Ambient Light Rejection (ALR) options for its Impression Series residential and commercial projection screens at CEDIA Expo 2019. Severtson’s ALR has a 170-degree viewing angle and is available up to 120 inches (diagonal at 16:9 Aspect Ratio), with additional options also now available. Custom and standard ALR sizes are available. Severtson requests customers contact them directly for individual pricing for their specific needs and for production and delivery timing.

Luxul Launches Apex XAP-1610 Wireless AP BOOTH 905 (Legrand | AV) Wave 2 and 4 x 4 MUMIMO come together in Luxul’s Apex XAP-1610 AC3100 dual-band wireless access point. Boasting data rates up to 3167Mbps and support for up to 128 wireless devices, the XAP-1610 delivers a connection that is faster and more efficient than any other in the industry, according to the company. The AP’s 4 x 4 technology means it’s capable of four spatial streams, allowing it to communicate with either more devices at once or over more streams with a single device. Wave 2 technologies

include beamforming, which allows the XAP-1610 to effectively direct streams to wireless devices for more efficient connections. So while Wi-Fi signals normally get weaker as the device moves further from the AP, beamforming generates a strong signal all the way to the intended device to enable even better performance. And with MU-MIMO, wireless devices no longer have to take turns communicating with the AP, as it’s capable of communicating with multiple compatible devices all at once. This drastically increases the available throughput.

Monitor Audio’s Flush Fit Series

CED19_DAY3_live.indd 46

BOOTH 3243 Monitor Audio is at CEDIA Expo 2019 spotlighting its most visually discreet architectural speakers to date, the Flush Fit Series. Featuring a 3.5-inch C-CAM driver and threequarter-inch C-CAM Gold Dome Tweeter, the CF230’s pre-construction and retrofit options offer superb flexibility and an abundance of design possibilities, allowing it to fit into any set-up.

In a pre-construction, flush fit setting, the result is a seamless appearance with no shadow-creating edges, and one which becomes even more discreet when the grille is painted to match the ceiling color. The ICS-8 subwoofer complements the CF230 and will fit into ceiling and wall cavities and under floors, enhancing the CF230 driver array and providing powerful, punchy bass down to 40 Hz.

TT: By the end of the year, we will be in the final stages of implementing a holistic New Entrant Training and Certification Program that packages components of ESPA’s EST, CEDIA ‘s ESC, CEDIA’s ESC-T, OSHA 10 and basic employability skills with lectures, classroom activities, online activities, work and learn opportunities with member companies, student training materials needed (books, tools, supplies, etc.) and testing/certification fees. The program will be designed to meet the educational needs of individuals who are not yet employed in the industry. We will also be working to reduce or eliminate the cost burden on new entrants by obtaining Eligible Training Provider and Program level status from key states, which will allow us to receive federal and state funding for training services from American Job Centers and Adult Education Providers. The program will be piloted at our new HQ in suburban Indianapolis and eventually rolled out to other high member markets in the next year or so. We, of course, will keep members updated on our progress and on the ways in which they can help this initiative from a grassroots level in their local market.

H-P PRODUCTS, BOOTH 1523 H-P Products Central Vacuums (H-P) is introducing Chameleon, a proprietary retractable hose system available to its central vacuum dealer network. Chameleon valves were carefully engineered to give users the ultimate central vacuum experience. This includes features like reduced friction on the hose, magnetic door closures and automatic turn-off. Chameleon valves were designed with installing dealers in mind and all components are removable or replaceable. Unlike other retractable hose systems, Chameleon features an automatic lock and patented dual seal system. H-P’s patented cam lock virtually eliminates the hose sock bunching and stretching common to other retractable systems. Chameleon features a built-in, 360-degree swivel hose handle made of durable polycarbonate/ABS blend that can be used on its own for quick clean-ups. Attach a cleaning accessory for even more versatility.

No 585 that adds the brand’s Pure Phono capability and other new features while retaining the existing Precision Link DAC and analog inputs. In addition to the Pure Phono module, the No 585.5 also includes an upgraded remote control

and new three-piece extruded, machined and anodized aluminum top cover that replaces the current single-piece top cover of the original No 585 and matches the appearance of all other Mark Levinson 500 Series products.

MuxLab Launches IP-based Wall Plate Solutions

KLH, HIGH PERFORMANCE AUDIO ROOM 210 KLH, recently reborn and re-introduced to the marketplace by new owner and CEO David P. Kelley (a former Klipsch executive), is at CEDIA launching the company’s first custom install products: the Maxwell and Faraday series of high-performance in-wall, in-ceiling and all-weather outdoor speakers and an Alexa voice-enabled amplified keypad. The launch is concurrent with KLH’s arrangement with the PowerHouse Alliance as the exclusive nationwide distributor of its products to the CI channel. In the midst of a busy day of demos yesterday, KLH chief technology officer Steven Howell took a moment to show some love to the Maxwell 1 speaker, from the line named after physicist James Clerk Maxwell.

BOOTH 1951 MuxLab is launching two new IP-based Wall Plate solutions supporting 4K signal delivery in a sleek enclosure that looks great installed in any residential environment. The HDMI/VGA/ USB over IP PoE Wall Plate Transmitter, UHD-4K (model 500777-TX-WH) provides an attractive, wall-mounted interface for AV sources using HDMI and VGA MuxLab’s HDMI 2.0 over IP PoE interfaces to connect to a local Ethernet Extender connection. The USB 2.0 port allows the connection and support of laptops and other USB devices. All signals are delivered via the network to the HDMI/USB over IP PoE Wall Plate Receiver, UHD-4K (model 500777-RX-WH), also mounted on a wall where HDMI displays, smart whiteboards and other USB devices are placed.

CEDIA COI Program Begets ‘High Priority’ Events One of CEDIA’s most valuable member benefits is the CEDIA Outreach Instructor (COI) program and some, as you’ll read, use it to their advantage often. Whether instructors hold classes a few times a year, monthly or when contacts call for it, the COI program empowers qualified members to teach local designers, builders and architects a multitude of courses covering topics in high demand inside and outside the industry. Bill O’Connor handles business development for Dallas Sight and Sound, Inc. and is a prolific provider of COI courses. In addition to leading monthly events, O’Connor teaches courses ondemand. “When I call an architect’s office, and I say, ‘hey, you know, I’d be happy to come by, we can do a lunch-and-learn and you can earn a CEU credit’... and I’ll send them the list (of course offerings) and they’ll send me back the class they want to see.” He

CED19_DAY3_live.indd 50

says COI is an effective conversation starter. “When I’m out calling on people, whether I’m cold calling or somebody we have a relationship (with), it’s always one of the first things I bring up.” Designing for Effective Sound Isolation is O’Connor’s most requested offering. Other courses available in the U.S. through the program involve home theater design, hidden technology, lighting control, residential electronic system planning, shade and window treatments, green lifestyle technology, outdoor space technology and home technology and infrastructure options. Presenting COI courses, O’Connor says, provides a quality connection with members of other industry organizations. He says monthly gatherings typically attract six to 15 attendees from smaller businesses. Larger audiences, O’Connor adds, are associated with regional events hosted by local

chapters of groups like the American Society of Interior Designers and the American Institute of Architects. A course O’Connor led at a recent regional ASID gathering drew 100 participants. For O’Connor, COI makes business sense. “It’s not incredibly time consuming, you know, it’s a matter of creating invitations or managing the food for the event or whatever it might be,” he said, “but it certainly is a high priority to make sure that we have them on the schedule and that we are faithful in what we’re doing and sticking to it as best we can.” The CEDIA Outreach Instructor program is accessible for CEDIA members and is designed to position CEDIA professionals as thought leaders in the industry. You can connect to more about COI and the requisite “Train the Trainer” course at cedia.net/programs/outreach.

Dynaudio developed the Sub RCC (Reaction Cancelling Configuration) to complement its Performance and Studio custom-installation loudspeaker ranges. The discreet subwoofer is designed to offer additional low-frequency extension to any audio system while facilitating high-performance 2.1 or surround setups without the issues commonly associated with many in-wall subs. Dynaudio has also teamed up with U.K.-based custominstall software house Intrinsic Dev. The company has created bespoke zone-control drivers that enable full integration of Dynaudio’s Music intelligent wireless speakers and Connect wireless transmitter with ELAN, Control4 and Crestron Systems. A driver for Savant will follow later in the year. The Music wireless speaker adapts to both its position in the room as well as ambient noise levels, ensuring the best performance wherever it’s placed. Designed specifically for Dynaudio’s high-end active speakers, Connect allows users to send the device a lossless digital signal and connect Dynaudio’s Xeo and Focus XD loudspeakers wirelessly and in multiple zones.

Audio Excellence in Spotlight at Screen Excellence SR-10 Acoustically transparent-specialized film screen brand Screen Excellence is tapping 2019 CEDIA Expo to again demonstrate to today’s discerning home cinema designers just how truly accurate and remarkable sound reproduction can be. The company’s Audio Excellence systems consist of several The Audio Excellence system family limited-range loudspeaker options, subwoofers, rackmountable multi-channel amplifiers and DSP crossovers to accommodate from 5.1 to complete immersive audio setups. Some highlights: The Vertex series consists of three limited-range, high-SPL loudspeakers that operate from 100 Hz to 22 kHz and are coupled with a subwoofer via an active outboard DSP crossover. The Raijuu series consists of two compact subwoofers (Raijuu 1 and 2) that operate from 20 Hz to 100 Hz. The Quattro 06 is a four-channel amp capable of delivering high current and high voltage on four channels simultaneously. The Octo 05 is an eight-channel power amplifier operating in Class D. Get Caught Breaking Into the ADI Security Pavilion By Grant Morgan Visiting the ADI Security Pavilion at the northeast corner of the Expo floor may be easy, but the products showcased there make it a lot harder for anyone to break into your home or business. Exhibitors from Schlage, Optex, Amaryllo, Bosch, AXIS and more are displaying security devices ranging from Amaryllo’s easy-to-install Atom AR2—a security camera that screws into a standard light fixture—to Bosch’s business security solutions, complete with intrusion alarms with vocal warnings and security software that integrates with cameras, locks and security zones. “It’s become a real destination of this trade show,” said Michael Masten, learning and education development at ADI Global. “It’s a chance for ADI to

» SAMSUNG (continued from page 4) Samsung Electronics America and John Shim, senior engineering manager for the North America Display Office at Samsung, discussed the company’s modular micro LED solution, The Wall Luxury, which scales from 73 to 292 inches. “This is a high-end product set and it’s geared for a certain market set out there,” Bennett said. “It’s long anticipated, we announced this at CES 2018. Back then it was a vision; now it is a reality.” Integrators can bring prospective customers to see it in person at Samsung’s executive briefing centers in Irvine, California or Washington, D.C. Additional centers will soon come to Dallas and Ridgefield Park, NJ. In a second discussion, Scott Cohen, Samsung’s senior manager of home entertainment training, expounded on the merits of the company’s 8K quantum dot LED displays, and why he feels it’s a good time now to upgrade to the new UHD format. “8K TV is very popular for Samsung,” Cohen said. “Because in addition to adding all of the resolution, Samsung’s 8K TVs are the best TVs we’ve ever created, therefore have the best in contrast in color, and so forth.” And though 8K content might not be there yet, Cohen points to the company’s AI upscaling, as well as their precision for serious gamers as justification for getting customers on board today.

AXIS offers a multitude of Companion security cameras at affordable prices that connect with the AXIS Companion video management software (VMS) to monitor businesses, people and assets. The Optex Bridge allows users to pair any ONVIF camera with alarm panel zones, sending video to your central station operator. Additionally, when a zone is tripped, your central station operator can dismiss, dispatch or send a notification complete with video of the incident to a list of callers at once, saving and shortening response times. » TECH STARTER FIVE (continued from page 6) homes in North America, and integrate them with smart home systems of today allowing functionality from existing wired motion detectors, door and window sensors, etc. Hero Labs has the smartest water leak defender ever designed with its product Sonic, an AI-powered device that combines HD Ultrasonic flow, pressure and temperature sensors with an automatic water shutoff valve. Only about three percent of homes have leak detection, but this is one of the largest causes of damages to homes in the U.S., and Hero Labs can detect—and prevent—leaks on the smallest scale. Artio Lighting enhances outdoor living spaces with advanced lighting systems and fixtures. The company manufactures a variety of lighting fixtures for different areas and applications, and its outdoor lighting platforms interface with the industry’s popular automation and control systems. Caavo Control Center is the first universal remote designed to simplify everything connected to the TV, including products like Sonos and Nest. Users just say what they want to do or watch using the Caavo voice remote, Alexa, Google or the mobile app, and Caavo’s sophisticated technology does the rest, making systems easy enough for everyone in the family to use. The judges selected Hero Labs as the winner and the company was awarded a check for $2,500 to help with funding and growing the business.

54 » CEDIA 2019 SHOW DAILY « DAY THREE ISSUE

Sciacca’s CEDIA Daily Diary: Day 2 By John Sciacca Night One of CEDIA 2019 ended fairly late for me after hitting a trifecta of parties that included a Sony Diamond Dealer event, a ProSource member event and the Control4 dealer party. For the record, the best drinks (i.e.: bourbon) were at the ProSource event. Day Two began with the Wisdom Audio demo. The demo did not disappoint, as the 13.6.8-channel Wisdom Audio speaker system, powered by 20,000 watts of total power and Trinnov processing, with a massive (22-foot wide-ish) Seymour Screen Excellence screen being fed by a Barco Loki projector and Kaleidescape 4K HDR video. The system had fantastic dialogue clarity along with flutter-your-pants bass levels, live audio dynamics and terrific pinpoint Dolby Atmos localization. It was truly what having a

cinema at home is all about and a great way to start off the day! Next up was a meeting with the folks at Hunter Douglas to check out their shade line. Shades are increasingly become a larger part of our business, and now Hunter shades easily integrate with the preferred automation systems of the custom channel. The prices are very attractive, and there are tons of cool and unique styles and fabrics to choose from. After that, I took a tour through the Control4 booth to check out the new and very powerful CA-10 controller. This is filled with redundancies (power supplies, network, fans, solid state drives) to ensure it always remains up on the largest projects. Next up was the Sonos booth to check out the company’s three new products launched at the show: the Move, ONE SL and Port. The Move is the company’s first fully portable speaker, offering up to 10

hours of operation on battery and has an IP56 rating, meaning it can stand up to most outdoor weather. It’s also the first product from Sonos to offer Bluetooth streaming, so you can enjoy music even when nowhere near your Wi-Fi. The Port is the replacement to the Connect, and it now has a 12-volt trigger to power on amplifiers and uses field terminatable digital coax (instead of Toslink optical) which is a nice nod to the custom channel. The Samsung booth was just a skip away and I had to check out their video offerings after looking at Sony and LG on Day One. I think the Frame is such a cool product, and they’ve made it better for this year with a QLED based panel that offers more color and better HDR. There is also a new in-wall rated cable for the One Connect box, so feel free to install it without feeling like you’re breaking any codes. The Wall Luxury is one of Samsung’s most awesome products, and it never fails to impress. The model at CEDIA Expo was 146-inch in 4K resolution, and the picture is just stunning. Also, it is way less expensive than the Sony 219-inch panel at only $400,000. Better get your orders in now! On my way to the Tech Starter event at the CEDIA Smart Stage, I stopped into JL Audio to check out the latest subwoofer offerings, and they have a new ICS-108 architectural subwoofer system that comes with an outboard amplifier and an enclosure designed for in-ceiling installs. In typical JS fashion, it did not disappoint, and delivered room filling bass that seemed to come from everywhere. The company is also bringing the Fathom f110.v2 back to market after a hiatus of over five years due to the demand for a smaller formfactor. A quick stop by the DTS booth netted me a couple of the latest versions of the DTS Ultra-HD demo disc and a new IMAX Enhanced demo disc. You should definitely swing by and pick up copies for yourself as these make great demo material. Speaking of DTS, located just down the way was the Trinnov booth where they were demonstrating the DTS:X Pro update recently released for their Altitude processor. Currently every other processor on the market is limited to an 11-channel DTS:X presentation, but Trinnov has been licensed to perform the full 30.2 DTS channels, and I’d been really looking forward to taking a listen. Like Wisdom, Trinnov is another demo that draws a big crowd, and there was a lengthy line in place when I arrived. Fortunately, I had a friend at the booth—and a press badge—and I was able to VIP in the side door and grab a seat. I swung through the Onkyo booth to check out the new Integra AVRs and pre-pro and new amplifier that (smartly) boasts a full 11-channels on board.

Then, I headed over to Klipsch where I checked out the company’s new outdoor soundbar while sipping on a local brew, a Great Divide Brewing Titan IPA. My final stop of the day was to see GoldenEar Technologies’ new Bookshelf Reference X (BRX). These will sit atop the GoldenEar bookshelf line and feature voicing designed to match the company’s flagship Triton Reference. I was amazed by how low the small speakers were able to play, producing bass notes from the pipe organ in one demo that you could feel in your chest. Sure, you’d want to pair them with a sub for movie watching, but for 2-channel listening they more than hold their own. Two days down and one to go, and still a ton of great stuff to see!
