Crestron Presents Big Updates for Dealers
By Anthony SavonaBOOTH 1901 Crestron is bursting with news at this year’s CEDIA Expo and not all of it is related to product introductions.
“We’ve had some supply chain disruptions and the timing of CEDIA this year aligns really well with the improvement of processor availability,” says Brad Hintze, executive vice president of marketing, Crestron. “We are here getting the word out that you can place an order and get the product in the quantities you want exactly when you need it. In fact, by the end of this year, we will have completely fulfilled our backorders.”
That is no doubt music to the ears of Crestron’s dealers, but that is only one reason to stop by the company’s massive booth. The big news of the show is the release of Crestron Home OS 4, which, in addition to a new user interface that provides customers quicker access to the commands they use the most, also includes advancements in light-
ing control. Now, dealers can add any lighting device into an updated Crestron Home system by writing a new driver or downloading the recently added drivers from the Crestron library.
“Crestron Home OS 4 is running the entire booth not only to demonstrate how it seamlessly works with our Crestron solutions, but to show
the true strength of the platform. Crestron Home is a flexible solution that can be scaled to a variety of sizes of projects including hospitality and MDU projects, which we know some dealers are interested in learning more about this year,” says Hintze.
CEDIA Expo also presents a great opportunity for product training, and Crestron is offering several manufacturer training courses at the show, covering Crestron Home, AV-over-IP with DM NAX and DM NVX, and tunable lighting.
Ultimately, the show presents Crestron with the chance to spend time with its dealers and potential dealers. “We view CEDIA as a great opportunity to engage with our dealers and to show off what we’ve been working on, but also to reaffirm our partnerships,” says Hintze. “As far as new dealers, we know that every day there are new businesses in this market and they’re hunting for the right partner to work with. We’re eager to meet those businesses and help them establish a relationship with us.”

AI Tops List of Future Tech Trends
By Grant MorganDuring Wednesday’s “Future Technologies: The Scoop From Silicon Valley” CEDIA education course, Rich Green, Founder of Rich Green Design, delved into the trends and insights that will impact CEDIA businesses and system design over the next decade. Unsurprisingly, the discussion of artificial intelligence and its current and future implications in the CI industry dominated the course.
“AI is the topic of the year,” said Green to a packed room. “2023 is going to go down in history as the inflection point in the evolution of the human race. It’s not going to go away, and we had better figure this out.”
With AI creeping into nearly every corner of our lives, it’s important for integrators and AV professionals to understand how to harness this exciting technology to increase profits and satisfy clients. But Green warned attendees to not lose track of their business because of the acceleration of recent technologies.
“We’re about to be under a tsunami,” he noted.
“At the end of the day, if you haven’t made a profit, nothing else matters. That’s the most important thing I’m going to say today.”
Many of the industry trends that Green highlighted are disrupting industries across the board, thanks to the advancements in AI, particularly with extended reality (XR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and Mark Zuckerberg’s Metaverse. “Metaverse isn’t taking off on the consumer side, but it is on the industrial side, so don’t just dismiss it,” he added. “The industrial application is very important for virtual meetings and collaborative design.”
Surprisingly, Green acknowledged the analog revolution as a major trend to be aware of—and not just with vinyl records and turntables. Consumers are increasingly seeking physical devices and experiences amidst their digital lives, creating profitable opportunities for AV professionals.
Green urged attendees to get into an abundance mindset and to be conscientious leaders in their companies, communities, families, and industry. “You’ve got to be extremely diligent. It’s time for you to take

the lead,” he said. “Don’t let AI and the new technology scare you—it’s the human touch that’s going to get us through this.”
The session concluded with the reveal of the CEDIA/CTA-RP22 Immersive Audio Design document, available widely beginning today. Produced in collaboration with the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) over three years and 3,000 manhours, the document lays out the industry-recommended immersion audio design practices for integrators. “This is your recipe for success, use this as a sales tool,” Green instructed.

New Product Lines from Monitor Audio Set to Please Integrators
By Anthony SavonaBOOTH 943 Monitor Audio’s commitment to the custom installation market is evident in the product design—and the names—of two of the new innovations the company has brought to CEDIA Expo: Creator Series speakers and Installation Series amplifiers.
The Creator Series is a new range of in-ceiling and in-wall speakers that feature advanced acoustic technologies and smart installer features. There are 19 models (five in-wall and 14 in-ceiling) arranged in three clearly defined tiers. All models, regardless of tier, feature Monitor Audio’s Quik-Link, which allows the installer to remove the terminal block from the physical speaker and pre-terminate the speaker cables to it. Once the speaker is ready to be fitted within its cut-out, the Quik-Link can be offered up to the connection point on the speaker and magnetically snaps and locks into place.
“The Creator Series is a total reinvention of our architectural speakers, starting from looking at how the product should interact with the customer—the customer in this case being both the installer and the final end user,” explains Michael Hedges, technical director at Monitor Audio. “The installer wanted it to go into the ceiling easily and they wanted it to be reliable. The end customer wants a great experience with the audio sound quality, but they also need to have a selection of products for different areas of the house, where they might have different budgets. So, we looked at our whole portfolio of architectural loudspeakers and we replaced just under 50 loudspeaker products with 19—and that’s the new Creator Series. We’ve distilled it down and removed products, but kept all of the overall functionality.”
With the Quick-Link, the goal was to make sure that the installer did not need an extra set of hands when placing the speaker in a ceiling. “There’re lots of companies out there producing screwless fixings that click in the ceiling, but one of the problems with them is that the installers are never quite sure if they’re secure in the ceiling,” says Hedges. “So, we’ve moved our dog leg to a machine screw that’s captive with retention chains in there to hold it back. You can stick your speaker in your ceiling, and you can run your three dog legs very easily. You also know that if you need to undo those dog legs, they’re going to click, and you’re going to pull your speaker out without them hanging in the way and potentially chipping the plasterboard.
“The other problem installers told us was holding the speaker at the top of the ladder and having a problem attaching the terminal. To fix that, we created Quick-Link, with a magnetic terminal block that you snap on to the cable. Lovely, light, and easy to do. You can hold it one hand to actuate the terminals.”
As for the Installation Series, “You need to drive the Creator Series with something, so, we’ve got a new suite of amplifiers,” Hedges adds. “Now, installers can pick up a portfolio of Monitor Audio products and complete most elements of the audio side of the job.”
The four-model Installation Series combines high-performance sound with smart features, including Power Sharing, which lets each amplifier guarantee a powerful performance through high-voltage rails that allow a single output stage to deliver the full output power of the system. Regardless of the speaker impedance (4 or 8 ohms), the channels do not need to be bridged to deliver the highest power levels.
Models in the new range include:
The IA60-4, which has a half-width chassis that offers flexibility while delivering 4 channels at 60 watts or 2 channels at 125 watts. Using power sharing, it can be configured to a single channel at 250 watts. It is designed for two-zone stereo applications, height channels within home theater Atmos solutions, or small garden systems.
The IA125-4, which also has a half-width chassis, delivers 4 channels at 125 watts or 2 channels at 250 watts. Designed for larger two-zone stereo applications and height channels within home theater systems, when using power sharing, it can be used to support Monitor Audio’s THX certified Cinergy 100 speakers.
The IA750-2 and the IA750-4 contain the same features as the IA60-4 and IA125-2, but deliver even more power and pair with Monitor Audio’s THX certified Cinergy speakers. The amps deliver either 2 or 4 channels at 750 watts.

Top 10 Things I’m Looking Forward to at CEDIA 2023
By John SciaccaWelcome to CEDIA Expo—here are some of the things I’m pumped to see at this year’s show!
10. HEALTH/AGING IN PLACE
Technologies designed to help with healthcare and assist with caretakers and people aging in place were a huge theme at this year’s CES, but no one is better placed to employ these kinds of technologies than CIs. We’re already making the home smart, how about safer for our aging customers and family members? I’m wondering if we’ll see this gaining traction at the show.
9. AI
One of the biggest buzzwords around, artificial intelligence seems poised to be a gamechanger. Besides Josh AI—who is already working on integrating ChatGPT into its system—who else will be leveraging AI and Chat GPT to make smart homes smarter?
8. TOP DEMO MATERIAL
We’re always looking for that next great demo clip to show off our systems, and CEDIA is where the best companies look to wow the best installers with the best demos. Last year, Top Gun: Maverick was the runaway demo favorite, though we still got some James Bond No Time to Die. Which demo scene will reign supreme at this CEDIA?
7. PROJECTION
CEDIA remains one of the few shows left where projectors are still prominently on display, and with the number of companies exhibiting ultra-short-throw models at CES this year, I expect we’ll see quite a few of those. But I’m also looking forward to seeing what Barco, Sony, JVC, Epson, and Digital Projection bring to the party.
6. MICRO LED VIDEO WALLS
With the Commercial Integrator Expo happening concurrently—and the popularity of digital signage in that world—I expect to see a lot of video walls on display from companies like Sony, Samsung, LG, Planar, and Just Video Walls. Of course, the video wall I’m most excited to see is the 18-foot-wide 4K HDR Quantum Media Systems’ Cinematic XDR LED Video Wall presented in a custom 60-seat theater in room 207.
5.
MONITOR AUDIO HYPHN
I’ve heard my share of high-end speaker demos at CES and CEDIA—last year’s highlight was the
unveiling of the new Meridian DSP8000 XE towers—but these new flagship models from Monitor have a revolutionary design that I’ve been told sounds absolutely amazing. I also have it on good authority from my rep that the Hyphns will be at the show with a working demo at booth 943, so I’m keen to give them a listen.
4. HOME THEATER DEMOS
Home theater got me into this business and it remains my passion, and each year I try and make it to every theater demo. The one I’m most looking forward to this year is the combined forces of Trinnov, Ascendo, madVR Laps, Kaleidescape, Officina Acustica, Barco, and Seymore-Screen Excellence in booth 4233. Beyond just a gathering of some of the greatest companies, Trinnov will be performing the first U.S. demonstration of its new WaveForming technology designed to produce unprecedented impact, clarity, and level of detail in the bass reproduction in home theaters.
3. I’M ON A PANEL!
This year I’ve been asked to be on a panel, “What Influenced the Influencers,” where we’ll discuss what caught our eyes at the show as well as trends coming in 2024. The panel will be moderated by CE Pro’s editor in chief, Arlen Schweiger, and, along with myself, will include Heather Sidorowicz, owner and president of Southtown Audio Video; Jeremy Glowacki, editor in chief at Residential Tech Today; and Chris Oram, service department manager at Engle Sentry. The panel will be on Saturday from 10:30 – 11:00 a.m. on the CEDIA Smart Stage. Come check it out.
2. WE’RE BACK IN DENVER
Get ready to say hello to the Big Blue Bear, people! I can’t tell you how many people have told me they loved CEDIA in Denver and wished it never left. Well, you’ve got your wish. Whether it’s the air, the weather, the vibe, the downtown, the beer, or something else, there is just something about CEDIA in Denver, and I’m stoked that we’re back.
1. SEEING FRIENDS
While the gear and training are front and center, it’s the reunions that are really the star of the show. Last year, you could feel the love all around, as everyone was genuinely happy and excited to be back at the show, rekindling old acquaintances and friendships. I can’t wait for more of the same this year, and if you see me walking around, please stop me and say hello.
