CEDIA has been around for more than 30 years. In that time, membership has grown and evolved. The smart home technology industry is booming, and technological innovation continues to skyrocket, especially in the home.
WiCT Luncheon Showcases
‘The House That She Built’
By Derek WileyThis CEDIA Expo marked Women in Consumer Technology’s (WiCT) 15th annual networking reception and luncheon, as smiling faces gathered to mingle over bloody marys and bellinis. The Friday luncheon was opened by WiCT founder Carol Campbell, who, after thanking the event’s sponsors and volunteers, announced and congratulated WiCT’s 2023 Legacy Awards honorees.
Campbell also announced this year’s “New Year, New You!” executive leadership coaching event will be taking place in Fishers, Ind., on Nov. 15. She then welcomed Mandy Beckner, CEDIA’s vice president of education and training and WiCT’s 2023 Volunteer of the Year, to the stage.
“It doesn’t take a lot to get involved,” implored Beckner. “For me, one event was enough to ignite a fire and to see the vision that’s shared by this community, and the opportunity to join in it and add to it. That’s all it took, and that can be you as well, and I hope it will be, because the friendships that you make will lift you up in your career and in your life.”
The luncheon’s keynote was delivered by Qadra Evans, Zillow’s director of industry relations for new construction. Evans is a member of the executive leadership team for “The House That She Built,” an educational movement centered around a children’s book that aims to get more women involved in the home construction industry. In her presentation, Evans broke down statistics that help drive the movement, including the fact that there is a smaller
percentage of women working in tech fields now than in 1984.
“That’s bad. There’s so much more tech to be involved in in 2023…where it really gets shocking is that women in leadership roles in tech is only at 28%,” she noted. “We have a long way to go to make up that gap.”
Evans delved into the statistics of the construction industry, pointing out there’s simultaneously a dire need for new skilled trade workers, while women in the skilled trades make up less than 3% of the workforce. “We’re facing a workforce shortage in the construction industry in the hundreds of thousands,” said Evans. “That’s where this book comes in. We need women, there’s a lot of us, and we have a work force shortage, so where do we go from here?”
Evans then explained the background of “The House That She Built.” “There’s a very special house in Utah, built in 2021 and sold in 2021,” she said. “What makes it special is that from the dirt to the framing to everything in between, it was built completely by women,” said Evans to a round of applause.
Diving into the book, Evans showcased how 18 different careers are covered, all of which are involved in the construction of a new home. “The House That She Built” aims to expose all children to these careers, and to let girls and young women know that there is a place for them in the industry.
Luncheon attendees walked away with a copy of the book, and were implored to spread the message, so that future generations know that the tech and construction fields have enough space for everyone.
In 2022, CEDIA established a clear mission and new pillars by which it serves its members. It also determined to use the phrase “smart home.” This term, widely known outside our channel, will help build awareness of CEDIA with allied trades in a way that’s familiar to them. The subtle, descriptive change allows CEDIA to be a link between consumers, allied trades, and CEDIA members. It also helps people understand the significance of industry recognition such as CEDIA Smart Home Awards finalists and winners.
CEDIA’s mission is “To connect, empower, and champion smart home technology professionals and businesses that enrich our lives.” The pillars, or ACE as they’re often referred to, are Advocacy, Connection, and Education.
The big question is this: What does all of this have to do with you? What do CEDIA members really get from being a member of the organization?
Follow along as we detail what each membership benefit includes in the CEDIA Membership Deep Dive Series on our blog and learn more at www.cedia.net/ membership
Quantum Media Systems Demos New Cinematic XDR3 LED Video Wall
By John SciaccaROOM 207 In my “CEDIA 2022 Superlative” show wrap, I wrote, “I think the Quantum Media Systems Cinematic XDR LED video wall was not just the best video image I saw at CEDIA, but the best I have ever seen...it looked like a massive, gorgeous OLED with incredible black levels and a rated 1 million to 1 contrast, producing vibrant colors, and bright whites up to 1000nits, and it delivered a truly engaging and cinematic experience that had detail rivaling anything I’ve seen.”
That’s some high-praise, indeed. So, when the QMS team reached out to say this year’s XDR3 system was going to be even better, I immediately carved a hole in my show schedule to see the demo.
While most video walls have been designed and engineered with commercial digital signage applications in mind and then adapted for home use, the Cinematic XDR3 LED Video Wall has been purposebuilt from the start for residential applications, factoring in requirements such as lighting, audience engagement, content, and requiring just four inches of total build-out depth.
Unlike commercial LED walls, the XDR has also been optimized to deliver 4K HDR movies and streaming video. New for this panel is a 120Hz high frame rate, making it excellent for
handling fast-action video games, sports, and hires digital art. Plus, a built-in processor enables it to display multi-window sports broadcasts. And unlike a projector, the XDR can produce images of exceptional brightness up to 1500 nits. The system is also designed to support 12-bit, 4:4:4 content, and displays 100 percent of P3 and 90 percent of REC2020 color space.
Further, the XDR has been designed to “play nice” in a custom-installed home system, featuring built-in technology that integrates with third-party control systems for seamless operation with media servers, lights, and other devices.
Part of the QMS “secret sauce” is handling 100% of the design, installation, calibration, and commissioning of these systems, as well as what they call “Pixel Alignment Calibration.” This includes the team coming out to assist with the install and performing full onsite chroma alignment, grayscale and color space calibration for REC709, DCI-P3, and REC2020, and full system optimization of every AV source, ensuring each install has optimal performance.
Also new for 2023, QMS has been approved for Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI), meaning it can now be part of the “Bel Air Circuit” and display first-run Hollywood content in private home cinemas. The company sees this as a major step toward adoption
Snap One Unveils Binary 960 Series MoIP Solutions
BOOTH 1518 Snap One’s innovative new Binary 960 Series MoIP solutions provide Partners and end users with advanced video distribution capabilities for both residential and commercial projects. The new series enables distribution of 4K60 video content, video tiling for up to 16 sources, simplified setup through OvrC, and reduced video compression for 10G-capable networks.
The 960 Series launch includes three products: the B-960-MOIP-4K-TX-A transmitter that enables audio downmixing, the B-960-MOIP-4K-TR transceiver that can transmit and receive, and the B-960-MOIP-4K-RX receiver with video tiling capability. Together, these products let Partners take advantage of the increased bandwidth of modern 10G networks to provide 4K60 HDR video and fast switching to ensure smooth operations for demanding use cases. The 960 Series also creates new efficiencies and end user benefits by providing a less centralized system that integrates MultiView and video wall applications (up to 4x4) without the need for any additional hardware.
in premium home cinemas.
For CEDIA, QMS transformed room 207 into a 60-seat, high-end cinema, complete with a full surround-sound system, acoustical treatments, media servers, and an integrated control system. Of course, the star of the show is the custom 18-foot-wide XDR display, which has somehow managed to get both better and less expensive!
Between the OLED-like black levels, brilliant, peak brightness, and rich color volume, the XDR3 represents the state-of-the-art of what is possible in no compromise video playback. If you check out one video demo at CEDIA, it should be this one.

CI Industry Can Score Big with Live Sports Streaming
By Grant MorganFriday morning’s panel discussion focused on live sports streaming, led by Marc Finer, managing director, communication research at DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group, began a much-needed dialogue between the CI industry and live sports streaming providers, offering a host of new opportunities for the integrator channel.
“We’re open to working together,” said Rob Stecklow, senior VP of marketing, sports and news at Paramount+. “I think the possibilities are out there, we would just need to know from you how you want to deliver that to customers.”
“This avenue is an education for us,” added Brian Gilmore, VP of sports streaming at Peacock. “It’s just a matter of understanding what the opportunity is and how do we tailor-make it to this group.”
Unlike movies, TV shows, and video games, tens of millions of sports fans across the globe share the experience of live sports, and they crave the one-ofa-kind events sports provide. “They want to be able to access and enjoy these events at any time, on any device, anywhere they go,” said Finer.
Tom Doherty, director, new technology initia-
tives, HTSA, and Walt Zerbe, senior director of technology and standards, CEDIA, joined the discussion to bring their insights and a CI perspective to the table.
“Our industry is performance-oriented, and it would be great to have information provided by these platforms to be able to educate ourselves so we can optimize our systems or be able to communicate that well to our clients,” Doherty said.
“We also need GUIs that could work well and be interfaced well with the equipment that we’re installing, so it’s a friction-free process for someone to actually go through it and use your apps,” Zerbe added.
Could opening a continuing dialogue about streaming sports and other genres with new and existing clients become a source of reoccurring revenue as a service for the CEDIA and CI channels? “Yes,” enthused Doherty, “and it needs to be! We have to be doing this, and those that aren’t doing it now need to start thinking about it.”
“The days of just delivering hardware, I believe, is no longer,” added Zerbe. “We’re still going to deliver the hardware, but we have to get more involved in the streaming service and maybe more of a concierge service to help people. Like when you are interviewing to do a job for a customer, you need to ask these questions: ‘Are you into the NFL? What sports do

you like to watch?’ We’re falling down right now with that, in my opinion.”
“It’s critical that we start to address this more aggressively, and we think there’s a lot of potential here for the integrators of the channel—particularly with new ways of supplementing their revenue stream with content support services,” said Finer. “The next step is up to the integrators. If you have interest in this, and you’re an independent dealer and a member of CEDIA or a member of a buying group, reach out to them and encourage them to get more involved.”

The groom was Joe Whitaker, VP of commercial at Origin Acoustics and an active CEDIA volunteer who has served on the Board of Directors for 10 years and is a member of the Governance Committee and the Strategic Advisory Council. Before the ceremony, Whitaker said it made sense to hold the wedding at the show because hundreds of their friends were attending CEDIA Expo, and it was a “simple and convenient way to allow our friends to take part in our wedding and wedding memories.”

Demo Showcases Fully Digital AES67 Home Theater
By John SciaccaSR10 StormAudio, Seymour-Screen Excellence, Grimani Systems, and RowOne have united to demonstrate an 11.6.6-channel fully digital, networked, AES67 Audio-over-IP demonstration—a CEDIA Expo first for harnessing the cutting-edge capabilities of networked AoIP technology!
AES67, a technical standard enabling high-performance AoIP and Audio over Ethernet (AoE), was developed by the Audio Engineering Society and first published in September 2013. AES67 operates over standard layer-3 Ethernet networks, is routable and fully scalable like any modern IT network, and is compatible with most commonly available IP-based switches. It also allows streaming interoperability between the various IP-based audio networking products currently available, such as Dante.
Driving the demo is StormAudio’s new ISP Evo 32-channel AoIP surround sound preamp/processor, which is based on the company’s highly regarded ISP Elite MK3. The ISP Evo handles all available immersive audio formats, and features 24 channels of decoding and upmixing, along with 32 channels of post-processing including the latest Dirac Live Active Toom Treatment module and StormAudio’s Expert Bass Management, allowing for multiple bass zones and bass routing. It is also the first all-digital immersive audio processor available to the CEDIA channel.
The ISP Evo is connected via a standard network switch—they claim it was an off-the-shelf, non-man-
aged model selling for about $160—and Ethernet cabling to a Grimani Systems 11.6.6-channel active loudspeaker system featuring 16,800 watts of total power. The fully digital pathway from source-toprocessor-to-speakers is designed to highlight a new criterion in audio precision and clarity.
Incredibly, this complex system required just four cables connected to the Strom Audio processor: power, Ethernet for network, Ethernet for AES67, and HDMI from the Kaleidescape Strato-C source. Beyond the simplicity of design in using only Ethernet cabling, a network switch, and speaker cabling for audio connections, the all-digital AES67 system also eliminates common issues like ground-loop hums, and allows for CI-desired features such as remote setup, calibration, and monitoring.
Of course, audio is only half of the experience, and this demo features a collaboration of video manufacturers to deliver cutting-edge video as well. Projection is handled by a Barco Residential Njord Cinemascope 5K 3-DLP projector, with dynamic
HDR tone mapping handled by a madVR Labs Envy Extreme video processor, along with a highperformance TLD+ short-throw lens.
Maximizing the presentation is the cinema-sized, 13.5-foot-wide (186-inch diagonal) Seymour-Screen Excellence’s Enlightor-Neo 4K HDR immersive film screen surface and Adjustable Ratio Theater (ART) four-way masking. This acoustically transparent material is designed to impart no coloration to the sound of the speakers behind it—basically “do no harm to the audio,” according to Chris Seymour, managing director at Seymour-Screen Excellence— while still producing every pixel of detail.
To ensure you enjoy the demo in comfort, there are eight RowOne chairs. Across the front row are the company’s Calveri zero-clearance power recliners, which Seymour says are the best seats in the house.
This demo can be found at SR10, and is one of the marquee demos at the show. It should definitely be on your shortlist.

Advocacy works best when it comes from you and people like you in your community. CEDIA knows and supports this process in any way we can.
Members can and should advocate on technology issues throughout the legislative process whether it’s at the local, state, or federal level. What does that look like?
1. Be proactive and reach out to state and local leaders. Introduce yourself and your business—let them know what you do and how it affects your community.
2. Offer to be a resource for future legislation. You know your business best, which means you can offer your experience for relevant issues as they come up in the legislative process.
3. Get engaged using CEDIA’s Digital Advocacy Tool. Use the tool to reach out to your state and federal legislative leaders on issues that mean the most to you and our industry.

Blurred Lines
OVERLAP GROWS BETWEEN COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL INTEGRATION
By Mark J. PescatoreThe fact that a section of the CEDIA Expo show floor is dedicated to the new Commercial Integrator Expo should serve as a hint that the lines between commercial and residential integration continue to blur. It’s certainly not a new development, but several exhibitors on the show floor offered their perspective on the growing overlap and the sharing of technology between markets.
As you’d expect, integra tors are trying to find more ways to capture revenue. In current conditions, with lower housing starts and higher mortgages, residential project opportunities generally decrease, according to Karen Smidt, senior director of marketing, Legrand|AV. As a result, residential integrators will attempt to fill that gap with lighter commercial work.
For example, a company that recently completed work on a larger residence may approach the owner to handle installs for their small offices, retail establishments, or restaurants. Smidt expects the bump to continue into 2024.
Robert Detwiler, senior director, product management and training, Planar, said that the “backbone” of many display technologies are similar for consumer and commercial applications, but they have different use models. Residential integrators that are looking to gain traction in the commercial space can tweak their offerings to appeal to the different customer bases.
Michelle Guss, Crestron’s VP of hospitality, said a popular trend is WFH, which is short for “working from hotel.” It’s part of a growing movement called “bleisure,” which

combines business and leisure travel. “People will travel for business and expand their trip for leisure activities, sometimes including their families,” she explained.
Crestron can provide solutions for every space in a hotel, from lobbies to meeting rooms to guest rooms, Guss offered. It’s important, she explained, because hotels need to accommodate the needs of their guests and provide the spaces and technology they need to effectively work as well—or better— than how they work from home.
David Park, LG’s director of customer value enablement, said consumers want professional, cloudbased control in their homes—it’s no longer limited to hotels. “Consumers are a lot more savvy,” he explained, “and they want to create ‘smart’ homes.”
Generally speaking, AV technology has been mostly a trickle-down process from the commercial space to the consumer space. But is that still the case? These days, some manufacturers are seeing the technology move in both directions.
Smidt said the technology is flowing both ways, but it’s more about experience and ease than pushing technology forward. “We have ease of technology in our personal lives, and we want that in our professional lives, too,” she offered.
For Planar, its focus is mainly on commercial displays, but Detwiler said the company has invested time, development, and engineering for both commercial and consumer products.
Park said LG has introduced many of its professional features into its residential OLED TVS, including diagnostics and a menu just for the CI channel for easier setup and troubleshooting. He’s also seen an increase in the use of the company’s MicroLED displays, which have extensive applications in the commercial market, in homes.
The company recently introduced the evo97G2 OLED display for consumers—while it delivers excellent imagery and features, its large form factor can be problematic for some installs. The new 118inch LG MAGNIT 4K MicroLED display is modular, which makes it easier to transport and install for some residences.
