Keynote: CEDIA Attendees Need to Get On Board with ‘AI Revolution’
By Grant MorganTechnology futurist and innovation expert Scott Steinberg welcomed CEDIA Expo 2023 attendees to “a new age of smart home technology that is going to be more predictive, perceptive, and inclusive” with his rousing keynote, “The Unstoppable A.I. Revolution That’s Coming to the Home,” on Wednesday evening.
Steinberg’s address was well-timed, as the custom integrator industry increasingly feels the tremors of the AI revolution, causing many to wonder how to best embrace this rapidly evolving technology and harness its potential.
“No matter what qualms or reservations you may have about AI and machine learning at the moment… the floodgates are now open, and we’re seeing a veritable tsunami of disruption headed our way,” said Steinberg. “From my perspective, this means that we’re going to get two choices here as tech and industry leaders. We’re either going to choose to get on board with the AI revolution, or we’re going to choose to get left behind by it in the dust.”
With the speed of adoption of new AI technology happening faster than that of smartphones and tablets, it can be difficult to keep up with all the advanc-
es, let alone the increasing demand and expectations of clients and customers. Fortunately, thanks to the transformative power of AI and machine learning, Steinberg said AI will be increasingly defined by its “growing emphasis on more human elements of technology as well as concepts like customer experience, context, and customization.” And that’s great news for the CI industry.
Gazing into his futurist crystal ball, Steinberg told the keynote attendees that the next 10 years are likely to bring more change than the prior 10,000 years ever did, with many pros speculating that we’ll have human-level AI in the next century.
“AI is not just going to redefine the shape of services and solutions and products going forward,” opined Steinberg. “It’s really going to transform the way that we work and we communicate and we connect with customers in the years to come. I’ve never seen a technology that has more potential to transform and upend any given industry and the way that we live and the way that we work.”
So where should a CI or AV professional start?
“What I can tell you is that as a smart home pro and a business leader, there is no better time to start playing around with and investing in AI technology

than the present moment, and no better point in time to start planning for its impact on your business,” said Steinberg. He also encouraged attendees to give themselves and their businesses the tools and capabilities needed to quickly and effectively respond to changes.
CEDIA/CTA IADE Levels Immersive Audio Playing Field
The CEDIA/CTA Immersive Audio Design Excellence (IADE) standard was designed to level the immersive audio playing field by focusing on system design and performance. This is the first time in our industry where system performance metrics are defined by four levels instead of vague “good, better, best packages” or “low, middle, high-cost models.” The new definitions aren’t just for integrators’ benefit, either. Shoppers today are more informed than ever, and rarely purchase without doing research.
The document includes technical elements and underlying skills an integrator will need to understand and implement IADE. But ultimately, it’s about preserving creative intent and designing and delivering the customer’s desired level of performance. As professionals, we have a responsibility to deliver exceptional experiences at every level, starting at Level 1.
With IADE, manufacturers know their products are functioning as intended while customers understand the breadth of what they are paying for. Having clearly defined levels not only holds integrators accountable, it also elevates our industry to the highest professional standard. In the end, everyone wins.

Snap One Brings It All Together at CEDIA Expo
By Anthony SavonaBOOTHS 1512, 1518 Though it all seems to come together seamlessly, you’d have to think that CEDIA Expo is a logistical nightmare for a large, multi-brand company like Snap One. Take this year, for example, where it has more than 20 new products to introduce across a wide range of its brands.
“As a company, we’re investing in products and services,” says Eric Harper, senior VP, product marketing, Snap One. “And our exhibit provides Partners with amazing experiences, which is not a surprise, but we have some things that we are showcasing that really put our money where our mouth is, so to speak. We know that it’s more than just selling boxes—we’re selling experiences and solutions. So, we’re taking a different approach to the booth this year.
“In the past we’ve had category-centric areas to do demonstrations,” Harper continues. “And we’re still going to be showcasing that, but one of the things we wanted to shine a brighter light on this time around was, ‘How do these things come together in a one-plus-one-equals-three-or-greater scenario?’ We wanted to showcase the ways that these products integrate into a solution for a given application and not necessarily just the category. That said, we can’t ignore the products in the categories—and we have 22-plus categories!”
It helps that many of the new product introductions exemplify how the Snap One products work together to improve system performance and efficiency for dealers. For example, the new Control4 OS 3.4.0 software utilizes OvrC’s new remote system management capabilities to allow end users to optimize their own experiences and for Partners to manage ongoing service needs for large numbers of clients.
And that just scratches the surface. As you explore the booth, you will find new products from Triad, Episode, Wattbox, Access Networks, Araknis, Luma, and more—all set up in themed areas that demonstrate each product’s standout features and how they integrate into a larger system.
“This is the first time we’ve showcased Araknis and Access Networks in the same booth, so that’s very exciting for us,” says Harper. “Combined, these lines offer network solutions to scale for pretty much any project. Of course, Access Networks is not just known for the access points, but also for the design services and the managed solutions that they offer. We are showcasing that on the floor and trying to convey to Partners what we can do and how they can leverage our team to scale their businesses and projects. And those design services now include Araknis as well, which we are demoing here.”
In addition to the product demos, Snap One is also offering a host of training courses at the show that cover a range of topics, including lighting, smart surveillance, media over IP, and outdoor lighting and sound.
With all the demos and sessions provided by Snap One at CEDIA, Harper hopes that dealers see how the company is working to increase efficiencies for its Partners. “That is something that is near and dear to those like us that have been in the industry for some time and who know how challenging labor can be,” he says. “It’s not easy to find the next new whizbang technician, and, as a manufacturer, we try to help drive those efficiencies to make it easier to install and support our systems and keep installers focused on doing things that are profitable for their businesses.”

Get Hands On with URC
BOOTH 2119 As you visit URC, you will notice a consistent approach to control with a dealer perspective and focus on the end user experience. With more than a decade in control and automation, URC’s strategy derives from a simple philosophy: “Do it well and stay true to your core.” For URC, this core is about providing proprietary solutions and integrations with hundreds of the top brands in the industry.
You can’t miss a large display for a product that made its debut at last year’s event—HDA (HighDefinition Audio). While the product has been very well received by those who have used it, there are some dealers unsure of all it can do.
“We’re seeing a lot of dealers aren’t fully grasping all the features that are part of HAD, such as its builtin DSP where you can store .WAV files,” says Lars Granoe, VP of product development at URC. “There are so many features that aren’t commonly found on amplifiers, so we want to make sure that everyone understands how they work and how to set them up. We’re constantly doing demos throughout the event, showing all the features—including ducking and announcements—and everything else it can do.”
Of course, there are plenty of brand-new products to be found at the booth as well, including the LT-3300, an upgrade to the URC Lighting product line that gives dealers the ability to program either a dimmer or switch at installation—no need to inventory multiple SKUs. According to URC, “It doesn’t matter what’s behind the drywall,” meaning its dealers are well positioned to speedy installations. It includes installation-friendly features like simple programming, auto load detection, built-in configuration button, and a customizable LED bar for visual notifications.
“This is us again making it as easy and as simple and possible,” says Granoe. “We had two SKUs that were a dimmer and a switch. Now, we just have one
that can be configured as a dimmer or as a switch, and we added more features including the LED that can generate color-coded notifications. We listened to our dealers and gave them what they asked for. They wanted to be able to adjust it automatically at night to make it a night light. Done. Dealers can use it for all kinds of notifications—such as if someone opens the gate by the pool, all the LEDs turn red and start flashing. There are very cool things you can do with this dimmer. We’re really excited about that.”
Making things simpler is a key priority at URC, which is evident in its latest update that expands certified voice control options with new Amazon Alexa Skills features adding to Comcast Xfinity and Apple TV, as well as the many launches that the company has announced over the year, including Ring integration. Plus, URC continues to add integrations with the likes of Big Dog PDU, Sunbrite Veranda TVs, Automate Pulse 2, Sunsa Wand Blinds, DMX’s AiSPiRE ABiCUS, Kaleidescape, PoEWit Lighting, and more.
That Unified theme plays well throughout the booth and includes shades, thermostats, lighting, and more. “The purpose of Unified was so that I can, for example, have Lutron lighting in my house and at the same time have Philips Hue lighting in my theater,” expalins Granoe. “The problem is that the Lutron interface looks completely different from the Phillips interface. We put it all under one system—now it’s unified for shades, lighting, and thermostat, and they all have the same UI.”
The reason why URC is willing to let users bring other devices and sub-systems into its environment goes back to its goal of making it easier for the dealer and the end user. “We want to play nice in the sandbox with everybody,” adds Granoe. “We have very good relationships with other manufacturers, which is part of the reason why we’ve been successful for all these years.”
Sarah Duvall and Joe Whitaker request the honor of your presence in their marriage. All friends and show guests are invited.
“With literally hundreds of our friends attending Expo, it made sense to hold our wedding at Expo,” says Whitaker. “It is a simple and convenient way to allow our friends to take part in our wedding and wedding memories.”
The Wedding Ceremony will be held tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. at the Origin Acoustics booth 2133.
Joe Whitaker is VP of Commercial at Origin Acoustics. He is an active CEDIA volunteer, serving as a Board of Directors member for 10 years, and Governance Committee and Strategic Advisory Council member.

Trinnov Audio Teams Up to Demonstrate WaveForming
By John SciaccaBOOTH 4233 They say it takes a village to raise a child, and apparently the same is true when it comes to putting on a world-class home theater demonstration. This year, some of the top manufacturers in their class—including Trinnov Audio, Ascendo Immersive Audio, Barco, Kaleidescape, MadVR Laps, Seymour-Screen Excellence, and Officina Acustica—have joined forces to deliver what is sure to be one of the must-see, truly reference demonstrations at CEDIA 2023 with its 18-seat theater.
For Trinnov, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, it is the first U.S. demonstration of its new WaveForming technology, which is designed to eliminate the effect of room modes on bass reproduction and completely eliminate standing waves in a room. Trinnov has spent more than six years working on WaveForming, which uses new algorithms to produce unprecedented impact, clarity, and detail in bass performance.
WaveForming requires using multiple subwoofers on both the front and back walls of the room, and is a case where “more is better,” as the higher number of subs used generally delivers better performance, allowing for near identical seat-to-seat performance. “Our new technology can elevate the performance of home cinemas to a previously unobtainable level,” says Arnaud Laborie, Trinnov’s CEO and co-founder.
To that end, the demo theater incorporates 24 21-inch Ascendo subwoofers to enable demonstrations of WaveForming’s performance using differing subwoofer configurations, including a three front and two rear configuration, a 12x2 configuration,
and then concluding with a full 12x12 double bass array that will allow users to experience Ascendo’s true infrasonic capabilities with performance down to 5Hz.
Laborie says the group of companies are “trying to show the best experience we can deliver today and project a vision for what is possible for high performance home cinema.”
I won’t spoil the demo content, but one of the most impressive testaments to WaveForming is a bass sweep played with and without the system engaged, letting you hear exactly how much smoother the bass response is across its entire frequency. This is a demo you won’t want to miss.
Processing for the 13.26.6 channel system is handled by Trinnov Audio’s Altitude32 and Altitude48EXT, which expand the system’s capability to 48 channels, along with power delivered to the bed and height channels by two Trinnov Amplittude16 power amplifiers. All speakers are provided by Ascendo, including 120kW of Ascendo DSP/Amplification for the subwoofers.
Video is courtesy a 9000-lumen, 3-DLP Barco Njord CS laser projector with 5K resolution, with processing and dynamic HDR tone mapping handled by MadVR Labs’ new Envy Extreme MK2 processor, firing onto a 189.3-inch-wide Cinemascope SeymourScreen Excellence Enlightor-Neo acoustically transparent screen. The 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos content is delivered by a Kaleidescape Terra movie server and Strato-C player, and the theater itself and room treatments were designed and handcrafted in Italy by Officina Acustica, then built at the show in three days.

Town Hall Panel Discusses Strategies for Recruiting Talent
By Grant MorganOn Thursday morning, Daryl Friedman, Global President and CEO of CEDIA, moderated a CEDIA Town Hall panel discussion about the age-old problem of recruiting talent in the integration industry. With topics ranging from raising awareness to reaching out to local public and trade schools, the panelists expressed the need for integrators to start in their communities to build the future of their industry.
A focal point of the discussion was the CEDIA NextGen: Smart Home Career Toolkit, a free package that includes ready-to-use resources employers can present to colleges, trade schools, and more to generate excitement and raise awareness of the opportunities in the integration industry. The kit also includes tools to expedite hiring and recruitment, such as customizable job description examples to help employers post open positions faster on job sites.
“I think it’s important for all of us when we’re pitching these jobs to the community to show that it is exciting,” said Friedman. “You get to work with cutting-edge technology, get paid well, and put smiles on people’s faces in their homes. There’s something very gratifying about that that I think will resonate with young folks.”
“Being able to stimulate your brain and work
in these massive projects is very appealing,” agreed Anthony Ortiz, a recent integrator graduate.
“Young people don’t necessarily look at careers the same way that we looked at careers,” added Amanda Wildman, Secretary of the CEDIA Board of Directors. “They look more at the breadth of knowledge and diversity. When they come to work with us one day, they might be doing audio. One day they might do motorized shades. They are much more knowledgeable because of what our industry does as opposed to a year working as an electrician.”
Home Entertainment. “So to be able to show students what it is actually like gets them thinking, ‘I could really see myself doing this, it looks exciting and fun.’”
The panelists also addressed common reservations regarding the amount of time necessary to reach out. Their advice? Start small and grow.
“When I started in the industry, I had no clue what I was getting into, and the first couple of really amazing homes that I went into I was blown away,” recalled Peter Trauth,
founder and CEO of NirvanaSoundTube Unveils New Outdoor Loudspeaker System
BOOTH C909 SoundTube Entertainment is unveiling the latest innovation in its product line, the XT850-LED, a 2-way outdoor loudspeaker system. This system features integrated LED landscape lighting, creating a harmonious blend of highquality sound and aesthetic lighting suitable for outdoor environments.
The XT850-LED distinguishes itself from standard speaker systems with its UV, scratch, chlorine, and weather-resistant features. These professional-grade components ensure its longlasting performance and durability, even in chal-
lenging outdoor conditions. More than just a speaker, the XT850-LED provides full-range background and foreground music capabilities, as well as paging functionalities. Its sealed, in-ground enclosure design delivers an impressive low-end response and optimal off-axis performance. The speaker system also comes equipped with theft-resistant mounting hardware and a weatherproof five-position tap switch for 25/70.7/100V applications, with a transformer bypass position. An IP55 rating further underscores its resilience in outdoor settings.
“When it comes to it, you’re not competing against each other,” explained TJ Thoss, instructor of Electronic Systems Integration and Automation Program, Orange Technical College. “You all have open jobs and there’s enough people out there that we can get to fill them. But at the schools, we need your help. We need your support so that we can build it up and we can start training them for you.”
Access Networks Offers Basic Configuration Services
BOOTH 1512 After a successful rollout of its Basic Configuration Services to its nationwide network of Partners, Access Networks maintains momentum by featuring this uniquely designed, dealer-focused program at booths 1512 and 1518.
Created to help dealers consistently and efficiently deploy smallto-medium size networking systems, Basic Configuration Services utilizes the expertise of the Access Networks team to preconfigure parts of a networking solution that’s shipped to jobsites ready to deploy. These preconfigured enterprise-grade networking products comprise all the necessary components, including Access Networks access points, switches, and firewalls. Dealers receive the configuration services and support historically provided for more complex projects requiring a custom Core Network; Basic Configuration Services provides a valuable subset of those services to the masses. Access Networks makes the process simple: Systems integrators provide the Access Networks team with the parameters of the project. From there, the team develops a preconfigured solution that is ready to install as soon as it arrives on the project site. Equipped with turnkey products, even entry-level integrators can have networking systems up and running quickly, efficiently, and with confidence.

BOOTH 4108 HVAC system protocols and IoT and home automation platform APIs are incompatible. Because they cannot communicate properly, all inverter HVAC systems downgrade to single-speed operation when paired with a smart control device. The Airzone Aidoo Pro provides the industry’s only solution to this problem, according to the company. Aidoo Pro is available now as a system add-on that sits between the HVAC system and IoT con trol devices. Airzone has assembled an exclusive library of manufacturer-certified HVAC protocols, enabling the Aidoo Pro to integrate HVAC inverter systems with device APIs from smart thermostats like ecobee, Honeywell, and Nest, as well as home automation plat forms including Control4, Crestron, ELAN, Lutron, and Savant.

Draper’s Tale of Two Exhibits
By Anthony SavonaBOOTH 3912 Though Draper is a staple at CEDIA Expo, this year represents a first for the 121-year-old company: two different booth locations.
“We have our interior booth where we’re talking about our interior shading products, projection screen products, and projector lifts,” explains Clint Childress, director of residential markets, Draper. “And then we have our Destination Outdoors booth where we’re showing our exterior shade products. We have two different pergola setups there with our product, as well as some products from our partners.”
Visitors to the interior booth (3912) will experience Draper’s new custom color service, which brings a near infinite number of colors to its shades. “You pick a paint color—be it Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams or any other paint they may be

Taking a solutions-driven approach to partner support, Steinway Lyngdorf is hosting dedicated partneronly sessions to pull back the curtain on custom solutions, new products, and new partner programs.
Complementing the partner sessions are live demos of flagship luxury audio systems from both of Steinway Lyngdorf product lines: Steinway & Sons Marine Speaker and Lyngdorf Audio’s Cue-100 speaker. Both audio systems will be powered by Steinway Lyngdorf’s fully digital amplifiers and processors, Steinway & Sons P100 with A2 amplifiers and Lyngdorf’s TDAI-3400. Expo is the U.S. debut of Lyngdorf’s new design-forward Cue-100 speaker, which has been drawing international acclaim since its unveiling at ISE 2023 in Barcelona.
using in the house—and we are able to then make the shades match or be an accent color,” Childress says. “This enables us to have a conversation beyond the limitations and confines of the fabric collection and enables designers to bring more design aesthetics to roller shades.”
And because the manufacturing is done in-house, shades can be ready in just a few days, depending on capacity.
Also on display is a new manual operator called Ascend, introduced because of child safety concerns, which will enable the company to do sizable manual shades without bead-chain operation, as well as a new fixed projection screen that gives users multiple border options in one screen.
Heading to Destination Outdoors, Draper is showing its Tension Zip and Vertical Zip products. “Outdoor shades are one of the strongest growth segments in this channel,” says Childress. “It’s about expanding your customer’s livable home footprint. Plus, the durability of these shades has improved so much over the past few years. We went down to Florida International University and wind-tunnel tested ours, so we can say our screens can handle 49-miles-per-hour winds—higher than you get from damaging storms.”

According to Childress, this year’s assortment of new products show how Draper is constantly scrutinizing the industry and coming up with solutions for its dealers. “Although a lot of people like to say they only sell motorized shades, manual operators are changing with the new consumer protection issues that are coming out, and we’ve got an answer for that,” he says. “We’ve also got an answer to help dealers with designers, with custom creation, and our ever-growing outdoor living products. We’re filling in the holes for this market through our product offerings, and we’re going to continue to develop this channel over the next several years.”

‘State of the Industry’ Panelists Remain Optimistic about Future LUXURY BUSINESS BOOMING, LOW-LEVEL INSTALLS FALTER
By Derek WileyDay one of CEDIA saw industry experts and buying group leaders gather on the Smart Stage for a “State of the Industry” discussion. Moderator Arlen Schweiger of CE Pro was joined by CEDIA CEO Daryl Friedman, HTSA executive director of HTSA Jon Robbins, Azione Unlimited president Richard Glikes, Oasys director Hank Alexander, and ProSource president Jim Pearse.
To begin the discussion, Schweiger invited the panelists to rate the health of customization industry on a scale of 1-10. Eights and nines were given across the board, with each expert admitting their optimism is fueled by research that the industry is rebounding.
“I think the industry is healthy and business is down,” said Glikes. “You can’t compound growth year after year—every once in a while, you have to a step back. I think we’re in the midst of that.”
“We’ve worked through a lot of the challenges around supply chain constraints, job cycles are in healthy positions, and things seem to be figuring themselves out,” added Alexander.
Each panelist revealed they had a difficult month earlier in the year, but things are rebounding solidly. “This year, I think flat is the word. We’re five percent up after a horrific July,” Robbins revealed. “That said, August numbers have come back looking really strong. I think we’re looking at a flat year.”
To further understand what challenges the
industry may be facing, Schweiger asked each leader to share an area where their members were finding success, along with an area where they may be struggling. The consensus was that low-level installations have pretty much evaporated, while ultraluxury projects are booming. “The high end of the market is flourishing, and if you’re dealing with one percenters, you’re having a good run,” said Glikes.
Pearse and Robbins agreed that lighting has been a boon for them this year, and commitments to education have paid dividends. “Lighting for us is a huge part of what we’re doing, and it’s all dependent on the education,” said Robbins.
“When I look at the lighting category, it’s now time to accelerate that category,” Pearse added. “We’ve adjusted our curriculum to a hands-on, face-to-face, week-long training event that teaches them how to do the business. We’re kind of moving on to taking the training wheels off to accelerate that category.”
During the open Q&A session, the industry leaders were asked about Q4 projections. Everyone remained optimistic on the final quarter while keeping expectations tempered, reminding the audience that the industry is still in a steady recovery period.
Alexander noted that diversification is going to be key for Q4. “For our dealers that are diversified, and they’ve made that investment, their business is very strong,” he explained. “For those that have worked hard to get into [different verticals], their business is going to be very, very strong.”
