InfoComm 23 Show Floor Opens: “Your Community, Your Industry, Your Future”
By Clive Young Surroundedby excited attendees in the main lobby of the Orange County Convention Center, AVIXA leaders teamed up to cut the ceremonial ribbon on Wednesday morning, officially opening InfoComm 23, the largest technology exhibition and conference in North America focused on the pro AV industry.
Before the big moment, AVIXA CEO David Labuskes spoke to the assembled masses, congratulating them for attending the event and encouraging them to make the most of the next three days at the convention.
“Welcome to InfoComm 23—your community,
your industry, your future,” he remarked. “Behind these doors, there are solutions that none of us can even imagine yet. And when you leave, you’ll have new friends, new knowledge and new stories— hopefully most of which you can tell!
“I hope that this is an amazing experience for you,” he added. “We’re here because of the contributions that each of you have made to the industry, and very particularly the contributions of the AVIXA team that are so selflessly dedicated to bringing this event to the city of Orlando and the Orange County Convention Center.”
Thanking strategic partners Blackmagic Design and Crestron, as well as supporting partner Shure,
I Want My AVIXA TV
By Clive YoungAVIXA TV has returned for its third consecutive year at the InfoComm Show, streaming live direct from the show floor. In fact, if you stop by the Xchange LIVE Booth (#4461) where the project is broadcasting throughout InfoComm, you can become part of the “live studio audience” for talk shows, interviews and more—but there’s a lot more going on than just watching fellow pros talk about the convention.
The initiative has grown over the last few years from a modicum of content to an ambitious slate of web programming that is intended to not only highlight great things happening at the show, but also act as a billboard for the industry as a whole, aiming to attract and inform young people who are entering the workforce by showing how AV aligns with their interests and skills.
With that in mind, this year’s slate of AVIXA TV programming at the show is deliberately “untechy” in an effort to be accessible and understandable by anyone, particularly those who may be unfamiliar with the industry.
Taking advantage of having the whole industry together in one place, AVIXA TV is using InfoComm as an opportunity to generate content, but that programming will have a lifespan far beyond the three days that the exhibition floor is open. Content will get repurposed and reformatted after-
ward so that it can be used on social media platforms, ranging from Facebook posts to Instagram Reels to TikTok videos and more. The content will be remixed specifically for reaching out to younger viewers where they are—social media and other digital spaces—and creating a clearer and more welcoming pathway into the industry for those who want to find out more.
The content will also be used to support AVIXA members with their own marketing efforts. AVIXA TV is designed to be a two-way content partnership program that can be used to answer a variety of different needs. To find out more, make sure to stop by the Xchange LIVE Booth.
Labuskes then welcomed AVIXA leadership to become fellow ribbon-cutters at the podium, as he introduced Martine Saul, chairman of the board; Samantha Phenix, Leadership Search Committee Chair; Cathryn Lai, Vice Chair; and Jatan Shah, Secretary-Treasurer.

D=Sign Panel Discusses What to Consider When Upgrading Your Digital Signage
By Derek WileyDoes my aging digital signage network need an upgrade, or even a complete overhaul? If it does, what options are now available, and how can I ensure a lengthy lifespan for my network? These are just a few of the questions clients across different verticals are asking Pro AV professionals, as they try to keep up with the ever-evolving digital signage market. At Tuesday’s D=Sign session, “Is Your Legacy Digital Signage Network Ready for an Upgrade?,” a panel of experts deeply involved with digital signage integration helped keep attendees informed about trends occurring in the market, as well as what new and exciting options are available to help customers maximize their digital signage strategy.
Moderator Heather Best, principal consultant at Diversified, opened the discussion by asking what clients should keep in mind when choosing a system that will ensure longevity. “There’re a few factors you need to consider,” began Channel Account Manager at Spectrio, Pamela Lobaton. “Choosing the right hardware from the beginning and using higher end hardware…the life of the device is probably going to last longer.” Lobaton emphasized considering the environment the equipment will exist in, with factors like humidity, heat and dust informing the amount of maintenance that will be required, as well as drastically affecting the lifespan of the system.
An emphasis was also placed on content in the discussion, with Best mentioning that what is being displayed can be just as important at hardware when it comes to maximizing the longevity of a signage system. When asked about the

biggest considerations he has regarding content when reviewing customers’ legacy digital systems, vice president of Alpha Video and Audio Lance Hutchinson explained, “Many times we find that there needs to be a new content strategy deployed because there’s been a change at the company, and there’s a new mission that’s not being shown on the digital signage system. Operational staff departures can really limit what you do, and if you don’t have good documentation, that can be a huge issue that affects what content you can deploy.”
Mergers and acquisitions can also be a hurdle, Hutchinson mentioned, as it can often lead to a company that has two digital signage systems, but lacks the knowledge to run either of them effectively. Keeping staff informed and trained on current systems is a priority.
As always, effective communication plays a role in ensuring an effective, up-to-date signage system. “It’s really important when working together on a plan [for digital signage] to think about the whole ecosystem versus just pieces of it,” mused global partnership lead for Chrome enterprise at Google, Filipe Ho. “When working with partners, we can come together and ensure that what we do for the end user is compatible, with the industry experts in both the operating systems side as well as the content side making sure that everything is going to work without having to worry about other factors,” he continued. “We can help make those informed recommendations, so the end user can focus on getting their content out and let us worry about the rest.”

HETMA Makes Historic Debut at IC23
By Wayne CavadiInfoComm 2023 is a historic one for the Higher Education Technology Managers Alliance (HETMA). The organization has its first booth on an InfoComm floor and presented its first-ever “Higher Ed AV” Awards on Monday, June 12.
One of the things you are sure to hear about when visiting with HETMA this week is the Prism Scholarship. Initially announced at InfoComm 2021, the program was born out of HETMA’s dedication to diversity, equity and inclusion (a part of HETMA chaired by Natalie Gillespie of Northwestern University).
“The Prism Scholarship is an annual award that we offer 10 scholarships to women, minorities and other underrepresented professionals who work in the higher-ed vertical,” explained Joe Way, Ph.D., CTS, who among his many hats is the co-founder and chair of HETMA. “We have just completed the first cohort and the second is about to start on July 1, 2023.”
The scholarship intends to encourage women, LGBTQIA+, Black, Latino, Asian, Indigenous, disabled persons and others to become leaders in the U.S. higher-education space and recognizes those “determined to leave their mark” as an AV professional. HETMA looks to make that journey for these passionate future role models a bit easier. “Recipients of the scholarship are offered an AVIXA Elite Membership, CTS prep class, the CTS exam, a HETMA mentor and a trip to InfoComm,” Way explained. “So essentially, they get training, connection/community and to experience the Pro AV industry.”
SHURE, BOOTH 3842 Wireless Workbench is Shure’s free software for audio professionals that puts a full suite of RF spectrum management tools in one place, providing full command of compatible wireless devices. New with WWB7, the Wireless Workbench Scan Library provides users with an ever-growing database of RF scans across the globe. With Wireless Workbench Scan Library, users can upload and download past scans from other professionals to facilitate frequency coordination before going onsite. Shure Wireless Workbench 7 (WWB7) will be available for MAC OS and Windows. Try out WWB7 at Booth 3842.
Not only is HETMA now officially part of the InfoComm show floor, but the alliance has also partnered with AVIXA, producers of InfoComm, to further support the growth of the Prism Scholarship Program. “AVIXA is a huge part of the success because they sponsor the 10 Elite Memberships, the CTS exam cost, the prep materials and offer a private HETMA study room at InfoComm,” Way said.
The second cohort will be announced at HETMA’s annual banquet which is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Friday, June 16, where it will also recognize the first cohort.

RF Venue Features Diversity Antenna Series
BOOTH 4155 With Diversity Antennas from RF Venue, true diversity performance is possible from a single housing that integrates dual antenna elements. What’s more, the elements are separately polarized, one for the vertical plane and the other the horizontal plane, ensuring dropout-free performance.
The patented technology of the RF Venue Diversity Fin Antenna incorporates, in a single package, a vertical LDPA “paddle” element for reception of vertically polarized signals and a dipole antenna in an orthogonal (right angle) orientation for horizontally polarized signals. For fixed installation where aesthetics are important, RF Venue has folded the elements of the Diversity Fin Antenna into a low-profile housing that can be installed on a wall or ceiling and painted to match any interior for a nearly invisible visual appearance—the Diversity Architectural Antenna. Where wider reception is preferred over directionality and antenna gain, the RF Venue Diversity Omni Antenna is the solution.

dbTechnologies Expands VIO Series
Loudspeakers
BOOTH 5775 dbTechnologies is expanding its flagship VIO Series of P.A. loudspeakers with the VIO-X310 and VIO X315.
As the first three-way active speakers in the VIO-X line, the new models combine precise time-alignment, internal DSP and a deep well of amplifier power to rival the clarity and projection of systems that are heavier, more complex and more costly.
Blackmagic Spotlights DeckLink IP Family
BOOTH 3800 Blackmagic Design’s new DeckLink IP family of PCIe cards capture and play back 10-bit uncompressed, broadcast-quality video directly into 2110 IP-based broadcast systems. DeckLink IP cards support multiple video channels plus each channel can capture and play back at the same time. DeckLink IP provides total IP network security as all video is captured and played back using the DeckLink IP’s frame buffers, which act like a video-based firewall isolating the Ethernet port from anything other than video and audio.
dbTechnologies’ VIO-X310 and VIO-X315
The MF-HF coaxial component mounted in both VIO X310 and VIO X315 utilize the same transducer used in the successful VIO L1610 line array module: it’s a 4-inch voice coil plus 2.5-inch voice coil coaxial driver,
a heavy-duty and high-fidelity transducer reproducing from 500Hz up. When it comes down to detailed mid-range playback, a compression driver diaphragm is much quicker and more accurate than a similar sized woofer. Furthermore, because of the compact dimensions, this content can be easily dispersed through a horn, just like you would do with an HF driver, for improved control over the sonic pattern. These characteristics result in a faithful and meticulous reproduction of the most critical frequency range, essential for clear-cut intelligible vocals and instrument separation in a mix.
Three models comprise the DeckLink IP family. DeckLink IP HD features three channels of capture and playback to 2110 IP broadcast systems via a single RJ45-style Ethernet connection. DeckLink IP HD Optical features three channels of capture and playback to 2110 IP broadcast systems via an SFP-based optical fiber Ethernet connection. DeckLink IP/SDI HD allows connection to both 3G-SDI and 2110 IP systems.

Inside InfoComm’s Audio Demo Rooms, Part 1
By Clive YoungThere’s so much happening on the exhibition floor here at InfoComm that it would be easy to forget that there are 22 audio demo rooms to check out— but don’t make that mistake! If you do, you’ll miss out on some amazing live sound and installation tools, groundbreaking immersive audio technologies and more than a few demos that will provide you a place to sit for a moment as they energize you up with some powerful sounds.
Rolling through them numerically, there’s plenty to see, starting out with 1 Sound (Demo Room W221A), which has a number of new offerings onhand, including its new Tower LF44 low frequency column array loudspeaker and its new Cannon C8, a coaxial loudspeaker that concludes the Cannon Series of point source speakers.
Next door is Electro-Voice/Dynacord (W221BC), where Dynacord is showing its V600:4, a new multi-channel power amplifier for commercial installations, and the new V1.3 update of its Sonicue system software, which helps users design, control and supervise small-to-large sound systems. Also here is EV’s new V2.1 edition of its Preview loudspeaker software for determining coverage of its loudspeaker systems.
Over at W221DE, Renkus-Heinz is exhibiting various systems, including the award-winning UBX Series of passive column loudspeakers, the ICLive X Series of digitally steerable arrays and OmniBeam, which revolutionizes the entire Renkus-Heinz steerable product line.
Inside W222A, Eastern Acoustic Works is demoing its new MKD526 2-Way Full-Range Dual-Woofer Loudspeaker, along with EAW’s AC6 2-Way Full Range ADAPTive Column Loudspeaker, MKC Series 2-Way Coaxial Loudspeakers and SB210 Dual 10-inch Subwoofer.
Within the Harman demo room (W222B), active product demos feature the JBL VTX A6, SRX900 and PRX900 systems, but during lowvolume off-hours, there’s still plenty to see with the JBL Control Contractor Expansion Series to be discovered, including models such as the C89MS, GSF3, GSF6, GSB8, GSB12, C68HP and more.
Making its InfoComm debut is Theory Professional in W223A, and if you’re not familiar with the company yet, you will be after you stop in to check out their in-ceiling, in-wall and mountable speakers, pendants, soundbars, subwoofers and loudspeaker controllers.
Fulcrum Acoustic (pictured) has a demo room
at InfoComm for the first time, and make sure you get into W224D to hear a live band help demonstrate the company’s suite of tools, including digital signal processors, software and acoustical treatments. Fulcrum Acoustic loudspeakers are being utilized, powered by APEX amplifiers, including the new 16-channel CloudPower CP716D.
Martin Audio has been on a roll in recent times, unveiling a string of strong offerings for the live sound and installation markets. You can see for yourself inside W224C, where its FlexPoint portable coaxial point source series and the TORUS 8 (T820) are onsite to get put through their paces.
AtlasIED recently announced a strategic investment in the UK’s Fyne Audio, which has resulted in IsoFlare ceiling loudspeakers—which are on display in the AtlasIED demo room, W224E. The IsoFlare series consists of seven models, including blind-mount models in 4-, 6-, and 8-inch sizes, a 4-inch low-profile model, an 8-inch subwoofer and two pre-install models.

In addition, get a hands-on rigging/configuration demonstration of the new QSC L Class powered loudspeakers.
Inside W224G, Adamson Systems Engineering has a lot to share. There’s the brand-new IS7c, a passive 2-way installation/integration-focused loudspeaker with a 7-inch LF driver coaxially loaded with a 1.7-inch compression driver, and there’s also the introduction of ArrayIntelligence, Adamson’s design and control software for use with its CSSeries loudspeakers and IO Distribution rack gear like the Gateway and Bridge. But make sure you catch its FletcherMachine demo, which features its immersive audio rendering engine, as well as some of Adamson’s powered “intelligent” loudspeakers.
We’ll walk you through the other 11 demo rooms tomorrow.
