By Wayne CavadiInfoComm 2023 is off and running, reuniting AV professionals from around the world. For Martin Saul, chair of the board of directors for AVIXA, 2023 marks a fresh InfoComm for a new industry.
“It’s completely different,” Saul said, not just of this year’s InfoComm, but Pro AV in general. “We are now very quickly back to the same numbers in the industry of 2019; we recovered the volume of business, but I can’t say this is normal business—it’s a completely different one. The industry changed a lot.”

“We suffered during the pandemic,” Saul reflected. “Now I can see that was very beneficial in terms of the industry because we learned more about the virtual connection and the physical connection and how can we interlace these two worlds. We as an industry were needed because we made the world continue working during the pandemic. Now the main challenge is the adoption of the technology.”
Saul is in his sixth year on the Board, having worn many hats from director atlarge to vice chair and now chair. In just that span, he has seen quite the transition in the Pro AV industry, and more importantly, himself.
“I’m a completely different person,” Saul explained. “The first time in a board meeting, I was like the little boy looking at the very smart, intelligent people. I didn’t feel that I could say anything or add value or contribute.
“But these are great human beings at the very highest level that I ever met. They asked me, ‘What do you think, Martin?’ So, I started talking.” What Saul started talking about was the rest of the world: He brought a more

“To The Stars Through Hardships”
DR. TARIKA BARRETT, CEO OF GIRLS WHO CODE, INSPIRES AT THE ANNUAL AVIXA WOMEN’S BREAKFAST
By Martha Karmali M.S. Ed.It’s my first time attending InfoComm 2023, and when Cindy Davis asked me to share about my first experience, I just couldn’t say no. My background is in education and I’m incredibly passionate about it because it opens doors to worlds I never thought possible—including being a Senior SmartStudio Product + Operations Manager at Future. I was fortunate enough to land the Tech Group, including AV as the industry I help manage, and the rest is history.
You can imagine my eagerness and excitement when I learned that this year’s 9th annual AVIXA Women’s Breakfast at InfoComm, sponsored by AVI-SPL and Q-SYS, featured none other than Dr. Tarika Barrett, CEO of Girls Who Code. Dr. Barrett launched the keynote by sharing a bit about her Jamaican roots and the women that instilled a deep reverence for education. She shared her stories of attending high school in Jamaica and returning to the States for higher education. She shared about her long commute from the projects of NYC, where her college roommate was Mama, her maternal grandmother. She shared the hard truths of the gender gap in tech today. She shared about the children labeled as “far too gone” because they
Just Add Power, Starin Partner Up

As a market leader in video distribution, Starin is committed to serving the fast-evolving, complex demands of AV installations. This partnership will enable channel partners to more easily incorporate Just Add Power’s reliable and trusted 3G Ultra and MaxColor video distribution products into their projects.
were caretakers and had to navigate instability at home.
The Hard Truths About Women in Tech
Dr. Barrett spent some time setting the foundation of what the gender gap in tech today really looks like. She noted that the gender gap in fields such as computer science is trending backward. According to Dr. Barrett, women only make up a quarter of the computing industry, a stark contrast from the 1980s when women made up about half. She further shared that in 2015 there we 40,000 new computer science graduates yet 500,000 tech jobs were left unfilled. Many more statistics speak to the gap between men and women in tech, but the idea is that it’s not looking great.
Myths About Women in Tech
So why is there such a vast gap, and why are we trending backward? Culture. Dr. Barrett explains that culture significantly influences how girls see themselves in the workforce. She further explains that we tend to see the most significant drop off in the field for girls between the ages of 13-17 because the “weight of society’s assumptions around identity and intelligence begin to chip away at girls.” Those assumptions go something
Dr. Tarika Barrett, CEO of Girls Who Codelike this: “Girls just aren’t good at STEM, girls just aren’t into computers, or there aren’t enough women in the pipeline to hire.”
Is There Hope?
There’s good news on the horizon, according to Dr. Barrett! She notes that when girls are encouraged to explore computer science, they do so in droves. The work being done at Girls Who Code begins early in the pipeline, reaching girls as young as elementary age.
Dr. Barrett’s closing note made an impression on me. She addressed other female leaders in the workforce and the responsibility they have in mentoring aspiring women. She shared that no career should be out of reach for women, especially in computer science. The high school that Dr. Barrett attended in Jamaica had a motto: “To the stars through hardships.” She left us thinking about how we can help “turn mirrors into windows and maybe through those windows they will see stars.”

AVIXA Expects Steady Growth for Pro AV
By Mark J. PescatoreBetween courses at Tuesday’s Market Insights Lunch, one message remained clear: The Pro AV industry is solid and should remain so for the foreseeable future. But does that mean we are returning to normal?
According to Sean Wargo, vice president of market intelligence for AVIXA, things have changed since the pandemic, which means normalcy has also changed. With recession risks ebbing and flowing, he expects the Pro AV industry to grow back to pre-pandemic levels, as well as return to a steady state of modest growth. Compared to EMEA, the Americas had stronger growth in 2022, as in-person activities surged back. In 2023, however, AVIXA expects the Americas to see lower growth than other parts of the world.
AVIXA estimates the Pro AV industry will bring in $307 billion this year, and Wargo anticipates it will add nearly $100 billion more in annual revenue by 2028. In comparison, the IT industry is already close to $5 trillion, while the consumer electronics industry accounts for $1 trillion. “As an industry,” he noted, “we are small but mighty.”
Most Pro AV market segments will grow over the next five years, though results will vary. Conferencing and collaboration still lead Pro AV, with learning, digital signage, content production and streaming and performance/entertainment rounding out the top five market segments. Notable product segments include standalone software (up 11.6% annually through 2028) and control collaboration in-room technology (up 8.5% annually through 2028). Meanwhile, video projection is expected to drop by 3% per year in the same time horizon.
Beyond Pro AV, there is short-term economic weakness, but the long term looks stronger. AVIXA economist Peter Hansen said growth in the Americas came in below expectations in 2022, and the latest estimates for 2023-2024 are also low. “There continues to be a very real possibility of recession,” Hansen added. AVIXA figures a U.S. recession is a 50/50 shot at this point, but the good news is that a recession—should one happen— would likely be mild.
While supply constraints were severe in 2022, those issues are easing. However, Pro AV is seeing a shift from CapEx to OpEx. As Hansen explained, high interest rates and the increased cost of up-
front cash are enticing companies to pay for AV as an operating expense, with managed services a top factor. Higher borrowing costs could also lead to less construction and more adoption of cloud solutions. These shifts could open the door to more IT integrators in the market, though Hansen is confident that AV integrators will remain competitive.
As the hybrid workforce continues to develop, there may be some cause for concern—not panic— with regard to office space. U.S. office rent is actually showing a slow and steady increase, so it is far from a disaster, and the data show higher quality properties are in higher demand. Even if square footage declines, Wargo explained, the net could be good for Pro AV, as the number of AV-intensive conferencing solutions will likely increase in number.

SHOW NEWS Session Covers Optimizing your Company for Hybrid Work
By Derek WileyIn the post-pandemic world, companies across all industries are finding their way when it comes to optimizing for hybrid work. In the “Advancing the Hybrid Workplace” session held on Wednesday afternoon, Jennifer Davis, author of Well Made Decisions, sat down with VP of Microsoft Teams and Devices, Ilya Bukshteyn, and Director of Product Management for Cisco, Tom Richards, to discuss how businesses can more rapidly advance their hybrid work infrastructure to better fit their employees’ needs.
From the beginning, an emphasis was placed on making hybrid work more appealing than fully remote work for employees, and this involves taking a holistic approach. “We need to earn the commute,” began Richards. “We made a decision not to mandate, but to really make the offices a magnet that people want to come to.”
Bukshteyn agreed, explaining that what most people might think of when it comes to attractive office perks might not actually be what drives employees to return to the office. “The cafeteria, the on-site day spa, that seems less

pertinent,” he said. “Is the technology investment in the employee experience?” Bukshteyn explained that a major overhaul they employed was to invest in a smart-parking system to save employees time and frustration when it came to quickly find a parking space. This effort, and others like it, paid dividends when it came to getting employees into the office. “Whether it’s a bookable personal space or a meeting room, give me the information to know that if I invest the commute, the technology is going to make it really quick for me to be productive.”
Accessibility and learning curve were also stressed when it came to improvements within the office to aid hybrid work. “What’s interesting is that there’s the desire to deliver an excellent experience, but what I hear again and again is ‘make it simple,” Richards remarked. “’Make
it easy, make it so that I can press a button and the whole thing lights up and everybody is in the meeting, that’s what I would like.’ They should have that, it’s doable today.”
For the final question of the session, Davis asked the speakers what piece of actional advice they would give attendees to advance the hybrid workspace in their environments. “Think about what experiences are worth the commute in every single space,” Bukshteyn mused. “Yes, complex meeting rooms are important, but think about how you can scale great experiences to every space.”
“You can do it today,” added Richards. “There is so much we can do today that our customers don’t realize. We need to show them that hybrid work is a very real thing that you can achieve right now.”

Black Diamond: SI at 20 Salutes Its Legacy Screen
BOOTH 1282 At InfoComm 2023
Screen Innovations is celebrating its 20th anniversary by highlighting the product that started it all-Black Diamond.
Black Diamond helped integrators broaden their scope of business by delivering uncompromised brightness, clarity and contrast in environments where it had historically been challenging to achieve this level of performance.
A reflection of this is SI’s InfoComm demonstration of Black Diamond paired with its ultra-modern fixed Zero Edge Pro fixed frame. Featuring a thin, sleek 0.625-inch bezel, Zero Edge Pro adds a stylish twist to this premiere ALR projection material, as well as SI’s many other projection fabrics. One of the biggest selling features of a Black Diamond screen with a Zero Edge Pro frame is cost. Integrators can offer their customers a 120-inch Black Diamond screen (including a projector) for less than today’s largest 98-inch LED display.

ZeeVee: HDMI 2.0 Extender Kit
BOOTH 4061 ZeeVee is highlighting its point-to-point HDMI 2.0 extender kit that supports long-distance transmission of AV signals up to 4K@60Hz with near zero latency.
Its extender kit provides the simple and reliable extension of HDMI signals up to 165 feet with receiver input up to 165 feet (50 meters) that is fully compatible with ZyPer4K and ZyPerUHD encoders. It answers the call of many integrators preferring a one-vendor, plug-and-play solution.
Normally, HDMI cables only reach 50 feet before signal deterioration occurs, which can lead to onscreen images pixelating, lagging or dropping out entirely. The ZeeVee HDMI extender (model HDMIEXT) preserves the signal integrity via CAT-6/-6A/-7 cables that are also more efficient to run through walls and crawl spaces than HDMI cables.

Martin Saul
(continued from page 6)
global presence to what he felt was once a more U.S.-centric approach. Having the proverbial seat at the table, Saul help shed light on the value of the diversity. “When you are in our room, we are 12 people from different parts of the world—different color, different age, different sex, a different place in the market. That diversity creates a much more powerful idea.”
Saul was particularly thrilled with the attendance at Congreso AVIXA at InfoComm—the first in-person edition after five successful virtual
events. “It was so successful,” Saul said. “All the people from Latin America—there were people that couldn’t get in. We are building community there; we need to feel like we are friends. It was incredible, the energy, the content, the interaction was incredible.”
Which brings us to InfoComm 2023. With last year focused on welcoming people back, what is AVIXA hoping to see in Orlando?
“It’s based on the experiential aspect more than the showing off of technology,” said Saul of the big difference from last year, going back to his idea of a fresh show for an ever-evolving industry. Another growing change visitors will
notice at InfoComm 2023 is multiple companies side-by-side in the same booth, something which Saul is happy to see. “We need to build more alliances, more collaboration with others because, as the industry becomes wider in terms of interest and different specialties, we have a limit of what we can do.
“We need partnerships. This is a shared economy. An integrator needs to know about AV, they need to know about networking, they need to know about IT security, they need to know about construction. It’s impossible. If we don’t make these partnerships, we can’t survive in this industry today.”
