1

Download the latest version

Mail is available from (http://windows. microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-live/ essentials-home). Choose ‘Download now’ from the website and click on the downloaded installer to begin setup. Save the installer to your hard drive, then once you’ve found it, run the .EXE file to get things started.

2

Add account

The download is the complete Windows Essentials setup manager and you can install many official Microsoft applications through it, such as Messenger, Writer and others, but we’re just going to select ‘Mail’. So, click ‘Install’, then your PC needs to restart. When up and running, you add an email account by following the initial wizard.

3

Mail servers

Mail supports three types of email servers. You don’t need to understand the finer details, thankfully; you just need to find out which one your email service uses for both incoming and outgoing emails, for example: pop.gmail. com (for incoming) and smtp.gmail.com (for outgoing). The simplest way is by using Bing.

4

Change view

One of the most important things in Windows 8 is to make sure that you are protected from any harmful viruses. Underneath Security, make sure that your protection and firewall is turned on and fully up-to-date to deal with any new threats. Take heed of the warning and make sure your Windows 8 machine has the right security in place.

Add another account

By using your free SkyDrive account, you can send large photos to friends without overloading their inboxes. Choose ‘Home > Photo email’, then in the new window, add photos from your PC and enter recipients and a subject line. Thumbnails of the photos appear in the message body, where you can also add album details.

There are two ways to create an event. First, look under the ‘Items’ menu on the Home tab. Choose ‘Event’ from the drop-down list and add the details, choose ‘Forward’ and enter email addresses. Or you can create an event from an email, useful if you are discussing an event with friends. Select the relevant email then choose ‘Add to’.

7

Quick launch options

When using Mail, you can use the Quick Launch options for your major tasks, such as sending emails, sending a photo email or adding a new event or contact to your email account. Simply right-click on the ‘Mail’ icon in the Taskbar and choose the option you want from the menu under the ‘Tasks’ heading.

Mail enables you to add more accounts. Go to ‘Accounts > Email’ to begin adding another email account. Enter the email address and password, and tick ‘Manually configure server settings’ to add the correct incoming and outgoing mail servers for that account. Click ‘Finish’ and you’re done.
