EDITOR'S NOTE
In October 2021 thousands of dead and dying crabs and lobsters were washed up on the Tees estuary and beaches along the North-East coast of England. A 95% decline in the lobster and crab catch was noticed by those employed in the local fshing industry.
Various studies were conducted to try and ascertain the cause of this mass death of crustaceans with government enquiries unable to reach a conclusion. However, those working in the fshing industry and independent scientists, claimed the deaths were caused by pyridine poisoning, an efect of dredging in the River Tees by the South Tees Development Corporation, causing toxic substances in the estuary mud bed to be disturbed.
Further occurrences of mass crustacean deaths happened in February and September 2022. In early October 2022, hundreds of protestors linked arms across Saltburn beach. They were part of the campaign group Reclaim the Seas, who wanted the dredging of the Tees Estuary to stop. Local fshermen believed they were experiencing an "extinction episode".
