COLLECTION PROPOSAL

As an Indonesian young generation, I aware that Indonesia is rich with diverse traditional culture. However, raised and grown in the era of globalization make me not having much opportunity to celebrate my own culture. The rise of globalization era result on how many Indonesian culture start to be omitted. Wayang is one of Indonesian cultural heritage that is lately not really recognised by the young generation. Therefore, in this spring/summer 2019, I want to use this opportunity to create a capsule collection ‘Bayang’ that is inspired by Wayang. “Wayang” is one of traditional puppet theatre. Has been used as a storytelling platform for a long time, Wayang owned rich techniques and values in term of the figure’s design, stories, language, characters, moral value and the supporting; music, lighting. Etymologically, wayang means “bayang” that means shadow. Therefore, the collection using the concept of shadow in the development process. As it is widely developed and grew in Java, Wayang has closed connection with Javanese cultures such as Aksara Jawa, Javanese language, Javanese traditional costume, Javanese myth and Javanese music. Since 16thC, the puppet has been used as a platform to tell Indonesian traditional and moral stories. Sunan Kalijaga, an Indonesian figure that had a big role in the growth and expansion of wayang, said that wayang is a miniature of Javanese society. He said that all Indonesian are puppets and puppeteers. All the stories in wayang illustrate the Indonesian society life. This is shown by the fact that puppets are always dressed in Javanese clothing. Therefore, I was inspired by Sunan Kalijaga’s concept and try to deliver the idea through the shape and silhouette of the garment. The shape of the garments is elegantly simple yet looks brave. Based on old photos of Javanese that I analysed, it is shown that the stand out components of the garment that they wore are gathers, drape, twist, wrapped and knot. Therefore, those garment’s details also become the main component of ‘Bayang’ collection. The colour combination and choices of the collection are inspired by the colour of wayang that usually uses natural colour such as brown, grey as the base of the bodice with colourful colour as an additional colour. The fabric that will mainly be used is natural base fabrics that give more refined and matt finished. Besides, the natural base fabric is also used to represent how wayang is usually made of natural material such as wood, animal skin, rattan and bamboo. With the proper, minimalist shape, the collection suitable for millennials who are modest and calm. She dreams a simple life to enjoy nature and reading books hence she likes to wear a comfortable and practical clothing.
