ART ORDER: ARTISTS INSPIRING A REVOLUTION VISUAL & CONTEXTUAL RESEARCH

Not a practitioner who I would usually lean towards but I find Rive’s work, especially his environmental pieces, to be really interesting and have really riveting imagery. It’s intriguing to see how different illustrators take on different issues in regards to global warming. His work deals with a lot of contemporary isssues. It makes me also consider how I could use riveting and powerful imagery but still keep it as my own, by keeping it in line with my own tone of voice without going off into a another path.

Visually speaking, Zhetti World could make for an interesting clash between something almost childlike whilst dealing with a very real, very severe topic. I love her energetic and lively drawings, they feel so innocent but at the same time sophisticated thanks to her traditional media skills and use of blending. Her images feel busy but not too busy, there will always be some sort of main focus with her work while there are also hidden things in her imagery that you could miss. I love how that speaks and communicates with an audience, it makes it an almost personal experience.

Amelie Flechais is one of the most important and influential practitioners to me. Aesthetically and professionally she is astounding, the way she draws and paints really inspires me as well, the fact that she does everything traditionally gives me hope that traditional media artists will always have a place in this digital painting age. In regards to the themes and general appeal of her work, the way she creates interesting and almost innocent worlds as if she is able to tell a story through a single piece of drawing. Her use of colour through watercolour and pencil is another thing that inspires me as well.

Not a single artist but instead a whole studio. Either way Studio Ghibli films will always be important to be both as a person and a practitioner. Seeing their conceptual work and sketches for their movies is really interesting, purely because of the way they use painting and drawing to get across the story. Although I cite them and their work for this brief they have also been very influential with other briefs that I have going on right on. It’s really the watercolour and pencil that does it for me, I’m amazed at how professional these sketches are despite them being just sketches and stills from their movies.
