RWS VISUAL & CONTEXTUAL RESEARCH

Given the rather bland and open premise of the brief, with the only requirements being the restriction of media I figured to, again, specify and ground myself with some kind of theme for this brief.. Recently I’ve been looking at a lot of pagan art in particular, as a pagan myself I’ve gathered quite a decent collection of various paints and prints from established pagan artists. I love this kind of artwork and imagery because of how colourful and alive it all feels. Hence why for this brief I will be inspired by these kinds of works.

A practitioner who I’ve had the pleasure of actually meeting, and one of my personal favourites. Her use of colour and using foreground, midground and background is beautiful. Her work always felt like it would be suited for children’s books but I feel that on their own they are more profound this way. Again, her use of colour is gorgeous and you can tell that there is definitely a lot of free range when it comes to putting together certain colour schemes for her paintings. This is something that I would love to grow in my own practice, especially when it comes to media competence and knowing the basic foundations for image making.

Sulamith Wulfing is actually an illustrator who I only recently discovered but one person who I am surprised I didn’t know about before. It’s pretty clear that her works are whimsical but also very mysterious, there’s a unique blend of pencil work and colour going on here. Her faerie like characters have a very childlike quality to them but at the same time they feel very elegant and refined. Her use of watercolour and pencil in particular is what drew me into looking more at her drawings and finished pieces.
