AESTHETIC is important! It directs your art direction and needs to be the driving point of your project. Reference & research are key. It’s interesting to see how baroque art has effected the overall aesthetic of the game, e.g. colour, theme, storyline & context The art & aesthetic must support the storyline. The narrative is key. The concept artists work to build a world that is relevant for the game itself & for the game. Northern baroque art was the key inspiration here. Amazing colour palettes. It’s an amazing insight into the overall process of concept art & the direction of a project this big. PROJECT OVERVIEW | GABRIELLA BRACHO

REFERENCE & RESEARCH I was interested in looking into the various ways that paintings, sculpture and architecture has had an impression on these games. Particularly, how the research must go and what would be the most relevant pieces of research the concept artists must pick up. This kind of reference is extremely interesting to see in regards to the development of video games, giving that the majority of people would assume this kind of research would never be considered on this kind of media platform.

ENVIROMENT Create a cinematic scene and overall tone in the way that the lighting, colour and general objects and landscapes coexist with one another. This is where concept art comes in as a key, as a background and guidance to the end result & what the game landscape will look like in the game engine. The screenshots taken by BioWare and many other studios are absolutely amazing considering the amount of thought and story that goes into these vibrant environments. The raw intense fantasy here can be felt pretty strongly. The same can be said to

ATMOSPHERE & ENVIROMENT Skyrim’s high fantasy setting filled with rich Nordic influences from the mythology to the architecture and landscapes. The concept art reflects that giving its overly cold feeling and vastness to it much like how the game itself plays. Although there are a lot of clear real-world references in regards to the buildings there is a clear fantasy spin to these scenes. Placing characters in these settings helps out with picturing the overall tone for these images and what the player will feel when they are literally placed in these locations.
