Rationale Throughout this module I will tackle briefs that are relevant to my interests in my specialist area, these briefs will also help support me gaining the confidence to really put my work out there, as well as sharing my ideas and concepts. I will also be developing and collating a portfolio that will be at a professional standard, one that showcases quality, character and a high level of conceptual understanding of key themes such as colour, character and environment. By developing both my traditional and digital ways of working and creating a mixed media based practice that takes advantage of both of these very different mediums I will achieve a higher quality of work, one that will also reflect on my openness to branch out and develop over time. Keeping in touch with the specific specialist area that I am wishing to go into. This will also be vital in showcasing my portfolio, showing that my practical skills don’t just cater to one or the other.

Brief 1: Fumetto Comix

Deadline January 2nd 2017

Rationale: Competition/Live brief A brief that I haven’t heard of yet although I have heard of Fumetto and what they do, it would be amazing to be a part of that even if it is taking a part in one of their competition briefs. The theme for this year is ‘Worlds’ and that alone is enough to get the creative juices flowing. This brief will give me a chance to use narrative and sequential skills, to also develop them further by practicing and getting a grasp on panel-to-panel sequence as well as let me explore the boundaries of narrative overall. Brief 2: Infected By Art

Deadline

December 5th 2017

Deadline

9th April 2017

Deadline

17 January 2017

Rationale: Competition/Live brief Infected By Art has been a brief/project I’ve wanted to partake in, it ticks all of the boxes for both my professional and personal interests as well as asking for something of high quality from my practice. The chance to appear in an art book featuring alongside fellow practitioners in a collection like this is an amazing opportunity and one that I will take full advantage of now and into the future. I’ll be pushing my skills and potential with this one, as with the other briefs. Brief 3: Character a Week Rationale: Self-initiated/directed brief Something that I’ve wanted to do ever since the beginning of summer, it is one that I’ve always wanted to set myself as a challenge. Making a self-made brief that will focus around pure character design and creation. This brief will involve me picking a theme/word and focusing a character on that specific idea. This process will involve rough sketching, development until I have a refined idea down. Colour, shape, form and concept will all be vital and it is all something I’m really passionate about. Brief 4: Folio Society Rationale: Competition/Live brief One of the briefs I attempted to tackle last year but feel as though it fell flat given that my attention was more focused on other briefs and projects. The book itself is also by one of my favourite authors from that time period, as well as involving illustrating actual scene from the book itself, so I will have a chance to use character and scenery in this brief. I really adore book illustration, even though it is not something that I may look deeper into I still want to experience it and explore its potential in relation to its strong ties to narration and storytelling. At the same time I

am considering turning this into a collab brief and work with another illustrator but I think I may save a collaboration if I wish to pick up one of the YCN briefs. Brief 5: RWS Contemporary Watercolour Competition

Deadline

January 16th 2017

Rationale: Competition/Live brief A brief that I really enjoyed last year but due to poor time management and a lack of attention I felt that it was a really weak, so I feel as though now is a perfect chance to redo the mistakes of last year and really have a blast with this brief now I know what I’m going for. Since this brief is primarily traditional based in regards of process I see this as a good time to really push the limits of watercolour as it is a medium I really enjoy, but it will also give me a good chance to go outside my borders and create something different using this medium and the openness of the brief itself.

ACTION PLAN – use this section to identify specific tasks that you need to complete order to resolve the brief. Brief What do you need to do? 1
