Rationale I will be proposing a concept and idea for a world that would be featured in a video game and creating the basic layout for a proposed world. This is something that I’ve been wanting to refine as it will test almost every relevant skill that my area of interest requires of me. This includes: clear idea generating, acknowledgement of aesthetic values, colour, shadow, character design and imagination. Coming off the coat tails of Context of Practice has given me a lot of perspective because for that module I did the something along the same lines but I felt as though it was a bit lacklustre and I feel as though this is a good chance for me to redeem myself by the end of the year in order to understand the skills that I have and find ways of improving them to the full. Communicating my ideas to an audience has always been tricky so through this final brief I will be able to improve these skills and properly communicate my ideas in a professional manner that is relevant to the specialist area that I am interested in breaking into. This will also be another chance for me to possibly improve my quality and medium skills overall. Themes / Subjects Folklore World building Character Landscape & Location Storytelling Creativity Imagination Fantasy Professional Context & Contextual References Looking into current video game design and seeing what has been done before and how artists and designers have been able to communicate these themes with only a hint at the storyline but being able to create powerful concept art that gets the ball rolling for the development team. Relevant Practitioners Various books and resources containing visual research that is relevant to the topic and themes.

OUIL603 Extended Practice – Major Brief BRIEF TITLE FINAL MAJOR PROJECT Brief Create a world inspired by Slavic and Celtic folklore and mythology, including intricate characters that have context and narrative behind them that can be communicated through their design. Research into the aesthetic values of the contextual background and themes of this brief, create a bustling world that is inspired by your own imagination and the stories told throughout these mythologies and countries. Consider the landscape in which these stories were told in and create your own characters who may traverse this world. Consideration of the world’s lore and possible history will also be included.

Products & Proposals

Function & Context

Giving the nature of this brief and visual development & conceptual art overall, these will be purely proposals for a further idea that could be in the works. That is the purpose of this type of art and illustration after all.

Help communicate an idea of a world and possible idea for a video game or perhaps a large-scale narrative overall. World building is crucial.

Context & Distribution

Audience & Tone of Voice

Presenting them in a professional manner and presenting them in a way that would be appealing and sum up the concept at large.

Additional information/Considerations How will I properly propose these outcomes? Since they are purely conceptual and idea orientated the final outcomes should be the final designs and ideas that I’ve outlined and presented in a professional manner.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY: BACKGROUND / AESTHETIC

Deadline

10/01/17

Details

Research into the visual context of Slavic fashion and traditions, in particular the folklore and any interesting figures and creatures that are featured in the sprawling world of that part of Europe. Colours, pattern work and general aesthetic must be taken into account. Gathering visual research overall will be vital for this project in order for me to better understand the context in which most of the character designs will be created.
