Intimate Core “Christian Formosa's paintings are so intimate that they require an adequate moment of reflection. The artist seems to be continuously asking questions about the universal human condition and his own existential being. He seems to be concerned mainly with the pathos which man has to endure both physical as well as psychological on his fateful journey on earth. He does this by peeling, layer by layer, his on going thoughts and preoccupations in search of a filtered, rational explanation. This process is sometimes so clearly evident literally in some of his portraits, where he tears away collaged paper showing his own portrait, leaving substantial evidence of his identity intertwined with expression of self-discovery, of constant doubts and questioning which are at the core of his work. (Alfred Camilleri)

ARTIST'S THOUGHTS Definition of Art, especially with the undertones of philosophy on modern themes, can be obscure and variant. In a mainstream belief, art is whatever the beholder understands of it and there is no limit to an artists potential. All art is beautiful and expressive. Painting is one of the many mediums that make up the an Art; such a statement should not lessen the value of painting. Painting is much more than a process or skill going beyond the consideration of colour compositions and specific design. Nevertheless, Art in itself is a choice, a freedom and a status for life as we know it. On one hand, painting can mostly be beheld as playful gestures on flat surfaces while sculpture can be a demand for temporal but full attention from the viewer as it challenges multiple perspectives before them. Art, on the other hand is far greater an idea than its mediums. It is Communication, a Maker of Hopes, the ultimate Happiness, Higher Consciousness; and it is the Artist, knowing the responsibility at hand, in all their respectful humility, that seeks for the best representation in the various mediums available to them.

WHY APPOSITE ARRAYS? Apposite can mean 'in relation to' or 'As appropriate' and Arrays can be applied in 'Wonderous display', a term usually used for a collection of items or calculated equations. Apposite Arrays, a title significantly thought of by Ms. G. Mallia, Co-Founder of ArtMalta and Curator at Aldabra Gallery, in application of this exhibition, is coincidently an interesting hypothesis linking most of the paintings together in social retrospective. In these works, the artist challenges one concept at a time in a metaphorical manner. As a collection of paintings, Apposite Arrays deals with these metaphorical themes from an empirical and humanistic approach such as the dependency on the internet, being an existentialist against a dogmatic construct, inner beauty vs. the artificial, protection from the truth and so on. The title of this exhibition thus places the artist's artworks and vision for hope of an artistic revival, within the contemporary age, embedded in a powerful yet responsible representation of the Art World. His Broken Photo Paintings spread at the Aldabra Gallery show the Artist's confrontations and exploration towards the necessary. Christian Formosa continues to study both languages, history, sciences and clay modelling at Alka Ceramics, Ta' Qali to aid his artistic journey.
