ARCHITECT AND URBANIST

at Pontifical Catholic University of Parana (PUCPR)

Hello! I am Gabrielly, a young architect and urbanist from Brazil. I have a strong interest in how to connect design as a craft to urban thinking and society, which is why I am currently studying Integrated Urban Development and Design. I see the world under a myriad of interests, and because of that I have worked and studied in several places to avoid creating field boundaries and foster multidisciplinary knowledge. I am passionate about art, design and cities. And the early stages of design are my favourite phase to work on, I love experimenting with the process of creating: mixing drawings, analogical making and digital tools. The process of registering and creating collages is for me also part of curating and combining information from the environment, which can feed the later phases of design.

The first ste p for the d e sig n p roce ss was to cre ate a street network from a g rid alig ne d to the b ound ary, the n d efine d which b locks should b e togethe r to othe r b locks me rge d in the case of a lowe r are a, in ord e r to prov ide the bal anced area dimension. In this first ste p , the re are thre e cond itions: the numb e r of horizontal stre ets, the numb e r of ve rtical stre ets and the smalle st are a value attrib ute d to one b lock(s) that should b e me rge d . To increase the connectiv ity with the su rrou nding ne ig hb ourhood s and inte g rate this new settle me nt i n the city existing network the next ste p was to snap this g rid accord ing to the numb e r of conne ctions to the existing network. The wid th of the stre et is the following variab le , consisting of an offset from the st re et network. To p rovid e a b alance d urb an are a it is not e noug h to have only re sid e ntial are as p lanne d since the b e g inning , ad d itionally pl anned areas for pu bl ic bu il dings and open space. For that the re was a p roce ss of se p arating ag ain the smalle st b locks for p ub lic land . So this is anothe r variab le , how much of the total are a would the use d for this p urp ose . This are a se le cte d for p ub lic sp ace would the n ag ain b e d ivid e d into two typ e s of are a: p ub lic b uild ing s and op e n sp ace (g ard e ns). The next ste p was to e stab lish which su bdiv ision strategy for each ty pe of l and u se. Consid e ring the morp holog y of the re sulte d are as for p ub lic sp ace b locks, they we re d ivid e d accord ing to „Manhat tan“ strate g y, which p reviews that they would late r also have a d iffe re nt typ e of b uild ing mod e lling . The variab le s in this stage was the numb e r of ve rtical and horizontal line s and the ir p rop ortion. For the re sid e ntial are as, the sub d ivision p roce ss was the „Voronoi“ strate g y, consid e ring that this algorithm has more b alance d ge ometric d ivision for corne rs and mid d le of the b locks. Re g ard ing the simulation of the b uild ing s, p ub lic b uild ing s‘ footp rints are d efine d from a offset from the p lots, consid e ring that this would better connect to cl oser open spaces, and generate cou rtyards. And the ir he ig ht is d efine d accord ing to a ce ntral p oint (conne cte d to the p ub lic sp ace s) As for the re sid e ntial b uild ing s they we re more simp le ge ometry, consid e ring the p e rce ntage of use of p lot (variab le) and extrud e d in rand om he ig hts b etwe e n a d omain (which could b e the he ig ht d efinition in land use law).
