WELCOME IT STARTED WITH A SIMPLE IDEA.

PRESENTING PARTNER

W

hat if we could convince the country’s most exciting craft breweries to all brew and release a brand new ‘festival beer’ on the same day at the one event? The idea struck a chord, and the beer fans of Australia responded in droves. And from that fateful day back in 2011 at The Local Taphouse beer bars in St Kilda and Darlinghurst, GABS was born. From Melbourne, we then extended our reach to Sydney, and last year we were delighted to launch our first ever Auckland festival. New Zealand has always held a place close to our hearts, and over the years we’ve championed Kiwi beers and ciders at our events and venues. The time was right to launch GABS Auckland, and what an event it was! We were thrilled to receive the nod from the Society of Beer Advocates (SOBA) as Auckland’s best beer festival in our first year out. In the last six years, we estimate that GABS has welcomed more than 700 new Festival Beers and Ciders into the world. Many of these have gone on to become a staple in that brewery’s range, some have captured global media attention, and more than a few have pushed the boundaries of what we know about beer and cider. GABS has become a place for the craft brewing industry to flex their muscles and strut their stuff. And we think that’s just awesome. At GABS Beer, Cider & Food Fest presented by Liquorland, we’re all about sharing our love of craft beer and cider with as many people as possible through an exceptional festival experience. The ‘experience’ part is really important to us. Wherever you are on your beer or cider journey, we want to give you the tools to take one more step at GABS, whether that’s by guiding your first tastings with easy-to-follow notes, or by giving you an insight into the brewing process at Craft College. Most of all, it’s about providing an incredibly fun festival experience for you to enjoy great beers and ciders with your mates. This event doesn’t happen on its own. We want to give a massive shout out to the 80+ brewers and cider makers who took the time to brew something special for you today, the street food vendors who keep us all sustained, our wonderful partners, the GABS team, and especially the hundreds of amazing volunteers who give their time to allow us all to have such a great time. Enjoy yourselves and please drink responsibly.

If you didn’t buy Currency with your ticket, top up at a Currency Stand or with a roving Currency Seller. For reference, all GABS Tasters are sold at $2.20 each (or $11 for a paddle of five Tasters). And if you have any Currency left over, never fear as refunds are available online.

2. SAMPLE UNIQUE FESTIVAL BEERS & CIDERS 80 brewers and cider makers have brewed a beer or cider especially for this festival, and you’re the first people to try them! Check out the full listings from page 27, grab a paddle (on the tables or at the Kegtainer Bars) or your Coopers Festival Glass and start sampling!

3. BROWSE THE LIQUORLAND MARKETPLACE There are more than 40 Exhibitor Stands at GABS Auckland. These are most of the best craft breweries and cideries from New Zealand and Australia. Check them out, try their range, talk to the brewery staff and take part in their games and ‘mini events’.

GABS MIXED SIX PACK

TAKE THE ‘FESTIVAL BEER’ EXPERIENCE HOME! This year at GABS, 70 of the best breweries from New Zealand, Australia and around the world came together to release a new and exclusive beer all on the same day and at the same event. And now, we’ve cherry picked six of them for you to enjoy after the event at your leisure.

ROYAL TANNINBOMB

RYE ‘N GOSE SLING

YEASTIE BOYS (AUS) In 2012, Yeastie Boys won the inaugural GABS People’s Choice Festival Beer with their Gunnamatta Earl Grey IPA. Royal Tanninbomb is the fifth birthday celebration of this ale. An extra pale Double Earl Grey IPA, bursting with citrus and floral notes, the ‘Tanninbomb’ showcases the tea leaf’s classic dry finish.

COLONIAL BREWING COMPANY (AUS) This lightly soured Gose (pronounced ‘GOH-zuh’) is brewed with a handsome dose of rye malt for dryness and spice, and Margaret River seawater for tender saltiness. Finally, it’s turned into a citrusy gin sling with a dose of Broadside from The West Winds Gin. It’ll take you straight to La La Land.

CHOCOLATE FISH BEHEMOTH BREWING COMPANY (NZ) A chocolate fish is a pink marshmallow shaped like a fish and covered in chocolate. Behemoth have created a chocolate Milk Stout that is chocolatey as chocolatey gets and added a load of raspberries to create the classic Kiwi treat in beer form. So get this into a glass and enjoy it at the end of a meal.

ESPRESSO MARTINI KÖLSCH

COSMIC CHAOS

WAYWARD BREWING CO (AUS) A mad fusion of the Wayward team’s favourite funky, hoppy and sour beer styles, this beer layers yeast notes over a tart yet complex malt profile, bringing it home with massive tropical and stone fruit aromas. The end result... an extremely approachable tropical hoppy sour ale with a hint of funk and a refreshing dry finish.

8 WIRED BREWING (NZ) Like the universe itself, this brew is dark and tranquil in appearance, but once you delve in, its chaotic intensity really hits. An experimentation in how far 8 Wired can push it, boldly going where few have gone before. It’s an adventure across the palate; sour, hoppy and malty, bringing balance to The Force.

Available from Liquorland stores after the festival, the GABS Festival Beer Mixed Six Pack features six unique beers created especially for you. Relive your GABS favourites, try something you missed, or explore something new. There’s something for every beer lover in the GABS FESTIVAL BEER MIXED SIX PACK.

BLACKMAN’S BREWERY (AUS) Packed full of cold drip coffee from the team at Cartel Roasters in nearby Geelong, vanilla pods and roasted malt, this dark Kölsch will have you thinking you’ve ordered an Espresso Martini. What better way to get the party started!

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL ‘Natural conditioning’ or ‘bottle fermenting’ is a traditional brewing technique in which beers undergo a secondary fermentation after the beer has been bottled or kegged. While there are only a few breweries that still take the time to do this, natural conditioning extends the beer’s shelf life, helps to enhance its flavour and eliminates the need for preservatives or additives.

1

3

ADDING THE YEAST

BOTTLE/KEG FERMENTING

Yeast eats away at the remaining sugars in the beer creating alcohol and CO2. As the CO2 is trapped it naturally carbonates the beer and displaces the remaining oxygen. This maintains the beer’s integrity and removes the need for additives and preservatives.

Once bottled or kegged, extra yeast is added to begin the natural conditioning process.

5

ROLLING

2

Coopers encourages people to roll their bottle or agitate the kegs before serving the beer. This helps move the sediment through the beer, enhancing its flavour and giving it that signature, cloudy appearance.

CONDITIONING CELLAR

The ales are held in cellar conditions for two weeks at ambient temperature while the bottle fermentation takes place.

4

THE SEDIMENT

Once fermentation process is complete, the yeast falls to the bottom of the bottle or keg leaving fine sediment. When that happens we know the beer is ready to be enjoyed. This is why Coopers’ ales and stouts have a ‘best after’ rather than a ‘best before’ date.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY SAWMILL BREWERY & SMOKO ROOM Sawmill Brewery Chef Will Michell will be demonstrating a chilli and hop marinated smoked beef brisket with pearl barley and puffed malt, a great example of deconstructed food with hops, barley and malt, and a perfect match with beer!

ARISTON FOOD & DRINK EXPERIENCE Love beer and food? Well, the Ariston Food & Drink Experience is the place to be. With more than 15 years of beery experience, Kirrily Waldhorn, aka the Beer Diva, will be your tour guide on a gastronomy adventure at Ariston Food & Drink Experience. Enjoy free, fun-filled seminars by leading Kiwi and international chefs. Learn how to pair beer, cider and food from the best, be prepared to roll up your sleeves, and even get blindfolded. Entry is on a strictly first come, first ‘served’ basis, so get in fast! Check the full Ariston Food & Drink Experience schedule in the Official GABS App or on signage around the festival hall.

A WORD FROM ARISTON AMBASSADOR GARY MEHIGAN “For me the choice of Ariston is simple, great value for money, easy to use and a brand you can trust. Ariston have been in Australia for 21 years and I’ve been using their cooking appliances now for over 15 years. I have Ariston laundry and kitchen appliances in my home, at work and on set. When it comes to choosing home appliances, I look for quality, the latest innovation and reliability. When you find something that you love and you trust, why not stick with it? And that’s why I choose Ariston. It takes more than a cooking range to create a Master Chef, passion and a burning curiosity for food is a start! Cooking for family and friends is one of the most personal things you can do for them, taking fresh ingredients and creating and making something however simple. Having the right cooking range just makes the whole experience just that little easier and a little bit more special.” – Gary Mehigan, MasterChef Australia Judge 16  GABS BEER, CIDER & FOOD FEST PRESENTED BY LIQUORLAND

BEER & CHEESE Our very own Beer Diva, Kirrily Waldhorn, will be talking beer & cheese with a focus on some of NZ’s local small scale cheese producers. Contrary to popular belief, beer is an incredible cheese accompaniment. So whether you are a traditionalist wine buff, sceptical of this match made in heaven, or a beer nut who loves great cheese, we are certain we can cater for even the most discerning and experienced palate.

VANESSA BAXTER From MasterChef Finalist to corporate cooking queen, when avid traveller Vanessa Baxter put herself forward as a contestant on MasterChef, she had no idea that it would lead her to becoming a specialist for adults and kids alike in nourishing relationships through food. Vanessa is a Ronald McDonald House Ambassador, an active supporter of KOTO charities, which helps educate street kids in all areas of hospitality, and has recently been involved with Bridge the Gap project, teaching the FundaMentals of cooking to NZ’s most vulnerable youth.

BROUGHT GABS GRAND TO YOU CARNIVALE BY

IT’S GOOD TO BE A LITTLE DIFFERENT

KEGTAINER STAGE For the first time in GABS history, we’ll be taking to the top of Kegtainer Bar B to stage a series of showstopping 360 degree performances throughout each session.

There’s a reason GABS was originally called the ‘Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular’ and that’s because the idea of a spectacular experience has always underpinned everything we do. Every year, we challenge ourselves to take the GABS experience to a whole new level, and this year, we’re thrilled to do just that with our entertainment program. Introducing the GABS Grand Carnivale. An entertainment extravaganza that ranges from the top of our Kegtainer top to your very table.

CAN CAN Why? Because you can can can! A hit at the Melbourne and Sydney events, the Can Can girls will take over the Kegtainer Stage for an absolute showstopper of a performance.

SWING OUT CENTRAL From the masters of Auckland swing dancing, don’t miss this rollicking performance by Swing Out Central. There’ll be spins, twirls and plenty of hoppin’ going on.

TAMASHII TAIKO DRUMMERS

THE ALE CAPONES Perennial GABS favourite house band, The Ale Capones, are back and will be working the crowd with their trademark tunes and humour. You’ll be singing along before you know it!

20  GABS BEER, CIDER & FOOD FEST PRESENTED BY LIQUORLAND

GABS HOTTEST 100 KIWI CRAFT BEERS OF 2016

Photo by Jono Galuszka & Richard Rountree.

NEW ZEALAND’S HOTTEST 100 CRAFT BEERS Following on from a successful GABS Beer, Cider & Food Fest in Auckland last year, our team launched a 100% New Zealand edition of our popular GABS Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers poll. And excitingly, the Kiwi craft beer community responded with gusto, with breweries registering more than 550 individual beers to vote for, and fans turning out in droves to nominate their five favourite beers of 2016. In fact, we got more votes than we received in the first four years of the Aussie poll. Well played, New Zealand. Well played.

THE BIG WINNERS Taking the inaugural title of GABS Hottest Kiwi Craft Beer is ‘Supercharger’, the American Pale Ale from Panhead Custom Ales in Auckland. Having also recently been named ‘Beer of the Year’ by the Society of Beer Advocates (SOBA), it’s a fantastic recognition to now also win the people’s choice. In second place was Auckland-based Epic Brewing with their Double IPA 22  GABS BEER, CIDER & FOOD FEST PRESENTED BY LIQUORLAND

‘Hop Zombie’. And rounding out the podium was ‘Pernicious Weed’, just the first of an incredible 19 beers from Garage Project in the full Hottest 100 list, including a remarkable five in the top 10 alone. Check out the next page for the full Hottest 100 results.

NEW PLAYERS & FESTIVAL FAVOURITES An impressive 18 new beers (brewed for the first time in 2016) made the list, including three from Behemoth: the ‘Triple Chocolate Milk Stout’, the ‘Tropical Mo Fo’ Fruit Beer, and ‘Dump the Trump’ American IPA. We were also thrilled to see six GABS Festival Beers make the list. These are beers that were brewed especially for first release at GABS, and included the first ever People’s Choice Best Festival Beer of GABS (in 2012), Yeastie Boys’ ‘Gunnamatta’ and ‘Jungle Boogie’ Soured Fruit Beer from Funk Estate (GABS 2016).

GABS BEER, CIDER & FOOD FEST PRESENTED BY LIQUORLAND 23

BEER & BREWER PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS At GABS 2016, Queensland’s Bacchus Brewing Co took out the first ‘GABS Double’, winning the People’s Choice Best Festival Beer in both Australia and New Zealand, with their outstanding ‘Peanut Brittle Gose’. This was the second time Bacchus had won the popular vote at GABS, following their win in 2013 with their ‘White Choc Raspberry Pilsner’. We spoke with owner/brewer Ross Kenrick on what the win meant for them. TELL US ABOUT BACCHUS BREWING. Bacchus opened in 2005 as Australia’s first (we believe) all-grain brew-on-premise, making cheap beer for the public. I then bought the brewery in 2010, and switched the focus to brewing unique and high quality beers for the craft venues that were just starting to open under the new small bar license in Brisbane. The brewhouse is a unique steam jacketed multi vessel (5 x 70L & 1 x 140L) system. We generally double brew which enables us to turn out up to 12 different brews in a day, with us typically creating over 150 brand new beers a year. We love to explore new and interesting flavours, but equally love perfecting our take on traditional styles from all over the world.

WHAT WAS THE IDEA BEHIND PEANUT BRITTLE GOSE? To create a beer with mass appeal, and a bit of wow factor, to stand out against the 130+ amazing entries at GABS. Gose is a salty, slightly lactic style of beer that was gaining rapidly in popularity, so we decided to try

and replicate the classic combo of salted caramel and peanuts to produce a beer of intense flavour and aroma with a lovely savoury/sweet balance.

WHAT GOES INTO IT? The base recipe remains fairly true to the Gose style, being predominantly wheat, spiced with coriander and sea salt, and lightly soured. But then we add the Bacchus twist, using specialty malts and ingredients including peanuts to create the creamy rich peanut brittle flavours.

WHAT DID THE WIN MEAN FOR YOU? We have been runner-up and winner in previous years, but were totally blown away to be the first brewery to win it a second time. There were so many amazing beers – the standard at GABS rises every year. The real icing on the cake though was getting the trifecta of wins in Melbourne, Sydney and Auckland. It doesn’t get any better than the public voting you number one.

HAVE YOU CONTINUED TO MAKE THE BEER? Yes, it remains a firm favourite with a lot of our customers and we love seeing the reactions of new customers when they try the beer for the first time. It’s not for everyone, but those that like it generally love it.

HOW IMPORTANT IS GABS? It’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase your creative flair and brewing talents to such a large audience, and winning certainly helps promote your brand, but more importantly it’s just a wonderful opportunity for brewers and the public to get together for a fun filled and informative celebration of craft beer.

WHAT ARE YOU BREWING FOR US THIS YEAR? Unfortunately we are not entering this year. A high turnover of staff, as well as personal commitments (including moving house), have just meant that we’ve not had the time or creative energy to do a beer entry justice this year. Hopefully back next year with all guns firing...

GABS PEOPLE’S CHOICE BEST FESTIVAL BEERS 2012 ‘Gunnamatta’ Tea Leaf IPA (Yeastie Boys, NZ) 2013 White Choc Raspberry Pilsner (Bacchus Brewing Co, QLD) 2014 ‘Praline’ Belgian Specialty Ale (La Sirene, VIC) 2015 ‘Milk and Two Sugars’ Sweet Stout (BrewCult, VIC) 2016 ‘Peanut Brittle Gose’ (Bacchus Brewing Co, QLD) (GABS AUS & NZ) 2017 You decide!

MAC'S BEER Dating back to 1981, Mac's began in a time where "craft" was only used to describe crotchet and knitting. When a man called Terry decided to apply for a brewing licence, it was the first in NZ for 50 years and no one could remember what forms he needed. Mac's, now owned by Lion, have since gone on to play a key role in NZ's thriving brewing scene. While Terry has moved on, the spirit of "what if?" still runs through everything they do, from ciders, to non-alcoholic sodas, and their brew-bars around the country. Rye ‘N Gose Sling Funky Hoppy People Royal Tanninbomb Espresso Martini Kölsch Wayward Brewing Co (AUS) Yeastie Boys (AUS) Colonial Brewing Company (AUS) This lightly soured Gose (pronounced ‘GOHzuh’) is brewed with a handsome dose of rye malt for dryness and spice, and Margaret River seawater for tender saltiness. Finally, it’s turned into a citrusy gin sling with a dose of Broadside from The West Winds Gin. It’ll take you straight to La La Land.

A mad fusion of the Wayward team’s favourite funky, hoppy and sour beer styles, this beer layers yeast notes over a tart yet complex malt profile, bringing it home with massive tropical and stone fruit aromas. The end result... an extremely approachable tropical hoppy sour ale with a hint of funk and a refreshing dry finish.

In 2012, Yeastie Boys won the inaugural GABS People’s Choice Festival Beer with their Gunnamatta Earl Grey IPA. Royal Tanninbomb is the fifth birthday celebration of this ale. An extra pale Double Earl Grey IPA, bursting with citrus and floral notes, the ‘Tanninbomb’ showcases the tea leaf’s classic dry finish.
