ARISTON FOOD & DRINK EXPERIENCE 20 LITTLE CREATURES LIVE 22 GABS HOTTEST 100 AUSSIE 26 CRAFT BEERS OF 2017

IT’S ABOUT SHARING THE LOVE. In everything we’ve done over the years - from The Local Taphouse to GABS to Stomping Ground Brewery & Beer Hall - we’ve been driven by one goal, and that’s to share our love of craft beer and cider with as many people as possible through an exceptional experience. Wherever you are on your own ‘beer journey’, we want to help you take just one step further. That might mean training our venue staff to guide you on what to try next; providing understandable tasting notes and ‘traffic light’ colour guides to beer complexity; or giving you an insight into the process through beer appreciation events and brewery tours. All of that comes together at GABS Beer, Cider & Food Fest presented by Dan Murphy’s. Whether you’re new to craft beer or the most fervent fan, GABS has got you covered. Sample from 170 different ‘Festival Beers & Ciders’ made exclusively for the event. Chat to the people behind the brews at the Dan Murphy’s Marketplace. Or learn from the best at the Brick Lane Brewing Co Craft College and Ariston Food & Drink Experience. And most importantly, take in all the festival has to offer, and have a brilliant time with your mates over some fantastic beers and ciders. A massive shout out to the hundreds of brewers and cidermakers across Australia and New Zealand who work so hard to make GABS so special. Thanks also to our partners, food vendors, staff and suppliers. And our warmest thanks to the hundreds of volunteers for donating their time so that every person here can have such a great time. Enjoy yourselves and please drink responsibly. Cheers!

PRO TIP: DON’T START AT BEER #1 TO AVOID THE QUEUES.

EXPLORE THE DAN MURPHY’S MARKETPLACE Without a doubt, it’s the largest gathering of craft breweries and cidermakers in the country. Discover new favourites, sample limited releases, and chat to the folks behind the brews. PRO TIP: AT GABS MELBOURNE, MAKE SURE YOU CUT A FULL LAP OF THE UPPER GALLERY. SO MANY ROCKSTAR BREWERIES!

GET AMONGST IT There is so much to see and do at GABS! Ride the Yenda Wheel of Beer, sing along with The Ale Capones, marvel at the Little Creatures LIVE circus acts, and dance to your own beat at the Silent Disco. All the highlights are listed right here from pages 8 - 14. PRO TIP: CHECK OUT THE HOLEY MOLEY GOLF CLUB & COLONIAL CADDYSHACK. YOU’LL THANK US LATER!

LEARN FROM THE BEST Join Professor Pilsner (aka Pete Mitcham of Australian Brews News) at the Brick Lane Brewing Co Craft College for entertaining discussions with leading brewers, or head to the Ariston Food & Drink Experience to explore gastronomic pairings of beer, cider and food with Beer Diva Kirrily Waldhorn. FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS

DAN MURPHY’S MARKETPLACE

With so many of the country’s best breweries and cideries exhibiting at GABS, it’s the perfect opportunity to explore the world of craft beer and cider, discover new favourites, sample limited releases, and chat to the folks behind the brews. You can buy tasters from every stand, or if you find something you like, go for a full pour of your Souvenir Festival Glass. Many stands will be running games, activities and competitions as part of the fun. Check out the venue maps and exhibitor lists on pg 48 (Melbourne) and pg 54 (Sydney).

STREET FOOD MARKET Hungry? Make sure you check out the mouth-watering goodies at the GABS Street Food Market. As always, we’re proud to have some of the city’s best street food vendors on offer at GABS, including Bluebonnet BBQ, Biggie Smalls and 8Bit Burgers in Melbourne (page 52 for the full list), and Happy As Larry Pizza, Chur Burger and Dirty Bird in Sydney (page 58 for the full list).

MILAWA CHEESE & PROSECCO BAR To celebrate their 30th anniversary, Milawa Cheese have teamed up with a few of their mates to make three washed rind cheeses, washed in Starward Single Malt Whisky, Bridge Road Brewers B2 Bomber Mach 7.0 and Brown Brothers Rosé Prosecco. These very special releases will be available for the first time at GABS, and go wonderfully well with a glass of Brown Brothers Prosecco.

FESTIVAL BEERS & CIDERS

Every year, GABS puts the call out to the industry to brew something new for the festival. In 2018, 170 different brewers and cidermakers around Australia and New Zealand have answered that call and created something just for you. For those brewers, it’s an opportunity to be creative, to push boundaries, and to showcase their talents. Check out the tasting notes from page 34, grab a tasting paddle, and away you go! Please note that there is a limited allocation of each Festival Beer & Cider for each session. Some session allocations may run out but the beer or cider will be back for the next session. The moral of the story is… if there’s something you absolutely want to try, try it first.

Ever wanted to tip a bucket of ice over your favourite brewer’s head? Hellz yeah, we hear you say. Consider those prayers answered. Many a fine beer has won the People’s Choice, including Yeastie Boys’ Gunnamatta, La Sirene’s Praline, Bacchus Brewing’s Peanut Brittle Gose and Stockade’s The Mountie.

For the perfect introduction to your GABS experience, head to the My Dan Murphy’s Discovery Deck, where you can take part in an in-depth guided tasting session to find your favourite beer styles, and get a few handy pointers on where to head next.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS… •

Pop your name down for the next Discovery Deck session (they start about 15 minutes past the hour), hang out in the VIP Area, play some Beer Pong and maybe win a Giant Pretzel while you wait!

Head up to the Discovery Deck, take in the view from three metres above the crowd (#wow), and get ready for the Dan Murphy’s Beer Experts to take you on a FREE tasting experience of some of the best examples of all of the major beer styles.

You’ll be given a Discovery Card on entry, so you can work your way around four different tasting stations throughout the 40 minute session: Crisp & Clean (highlighting lighter sessionable styles); Dark & Roasty (think dark beers paired with chocolate); Wild, Sour & Fruity (with garnishes to personalise your tasters); and Hoppy (let’s talk Pale Ale scale).

AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST CRAFT BEER CELEBRATION Now in its tenth year, the GABS Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers poll shines a powerful spotlight on the trends, brands and breweries shaping the booming craft beer industry. Described by Australian Brews News as “the largest and most influential people’s choice poll in the land,” the 2017 edition saw tens of thousands of craft beer lovers vote for their five favourite craft beers of the year, then celebrate the live countdown on Saturday 27 January at more than 45 events held around the country.

INDEPENDENCE MATTERS

In a year punctuated by the acquisitions of craft darlings 4 Pines (NSW) and Pirate Life (SA) to the world’s largest brewery AB InBev, and Feral Brewing (WA) to Coca-Cola Amatil, the Hottest 100 results indicate that ownership is of importance to craft beer consumers, with beers from each of those breweries slipping in rankings from the previous year. Performing strongest amongst the non-independent breweries was Adelaide’s Pirate Life, with seven beers making the list, including it’s ‘Mosaic’ IPA (India Pale Ale), brewed for the first time in 2017, in fifth position. Overall, 71% of the listed beers, including nine of the top 10, were produced by independently owned breweries.

26

A NEW PODIUM EMERGES

Leading the the charge was Gold Coast brewery Balter with their hugely popular ‘XPA’ (Extra Pale Ale). Part-owned by champion surfers Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Josh Kerr and Bede Durbidge, Balter have made significant waves in the beer world in just under 2 years of operation. Indeed, every one of their five nominated beers made the list, and they were the only brewery to place twice in the top 10. Second place went to Byron Bay’s Stone & Wood’s perennial favourite ‘Pacific Ale’, a consistent top 3 beer since the 2010 poll, and 3-time winner. Rounding out the podium was ‘Crankshaft’ from BentSpoke Brewing Co in Canberra. The American-style IPA topped an impressive showing from Canberra brewers, with Capital Brewing and Pact Beer also featuring prominently. One of the biggest movers was Victoria’s KAIJU! with it’s Tropical Pale ‘KRUSH!’, breaking into 10th position from 55th place in 2016.

NEW IN 2017

An impressive 24 new beers debuted on the list, including seven beers in the hugely popular New England, or ‘hazy’ IPA style. Chief amongst these was ‘Jedi Juice’ from Melbourne’s Hop Nation. First brewed as a ‘Festival Beer’ for GABS Beer, Cider & Food Fest in 2017, the beer leads one of the most popular beer styles of recent years, particularly in Victoria where 3 Ravens (‘Juicy’), Mountain Goat (‘Back To The Brewer’) and CoConspirators (‘The Matriarch’) also drew significant votes.

GET INVOLVED

HOPS, HOPS AND MORE HOPS

The New England IPA seems to be just another extension of Australia’s love of hoppy beers, which shows no sign of slowing down. Across the range of beers in the list, 75% were hop-driven styles - such as Pale Ale, IPA, or the higher-ABV Double IPA - up from 68% in the previous year. Some of the outliers to this trend include Bad Shepherd (VIC), with their ‘Hazelnut Brown Ale’, and Wagga Wagga’s Thirsty Crow, whose ‘Vanilla Milk Stout’ has made the Hottest 100 since 2011. Coopers (SA) also returned to the list with their iconic ‘Sparkling Ale’, after opting not to include their beers in last year’s poll.

KNOW YOUR BEER STYLES

GUIDE TO BEER STYLES WITH WILL ZIEBELL

THE CLASSICS

ON TREND

With a name derived from the German ‘lagern’, which means ‘to store’, lagers come in all shapes and sizes, buts it’s the pale lagers first perfected by Czech and German brewers that dominate the planet. Brewed with top-fermenting, unobtrusive yeast strains, classic lagers deliver smooth, sweet, grainy malts with a touch of floral, spicy or herbal hops and a gentle dry finish.

Described by Napoleon’s soldiers as the Champagne of the North, the highly effervescent Berliner Weisse is a low alcohol, soured affair brewed with a high proportion of wheat. They can vary from the lightly tart to the mouth puckering, with fruit and other adjuncts often added along the way.

LAGER

PALE ALE While the style originated in England, contemporary pale ales are more commonly associated with America’s craft beer revolution. Both there and in Australia, brewers typically take a hop forward approach, creating tropical, pine or citrus aromas and flavours, balanced by a touch of malt sweetness and varying degrees of bitterness.

IPA Historically, India Pale Ale is closely tied to the time when the British Empire dominated the planet; today, it connotes the supremacy of hops in modern brewing. Like pale ales on steroids, with hop character, bitterness and alcohol content all ratcheted up, IPAs are typically a showcase for hops (and more hops) with a pungent, tropical or piney bent.

STOUT Long ago, stout simply referred to a stronger version of any beer, but the beer we know today grew from “stout porter”, a heavier version of the dark beer style so popular in 18th and 19th century England. Typically, a stout is a journey into roasted, chocolate and coffee flavours, but you’ll find decadent imperial versions and, particularly at GABS, sweet stouts too.

BERLINER WEISSE

GOSE Possibly the most mispronounced, and frequently punned, beer style to gain popularity on Australia’s shores (try ‘goes-uh’), this wheat-based beer is traditionally brewed with salt, coriander and souring bacteria. Originating in the German town of Goslar and once almost lost to the history books, today it’s often a base upon which brewers layer whatever tart fruits take their fancy.

NEW ENGLAND IPA Oft derided as poorly brewed or overhyped, New England IPAs have taken the craft beer world by storm and can involve highly technical brewing processes. Known for their breakfast juice like qualities and hazy / murky appearance, they’re loaded with the fruitiest hops obtainable, are low in bitterness and need to be consumed fresh as.

WOOD AGED BEER Once upon a time, all beer would have been stored and transported in wooden barrels but, today, beer’s journey to your glass takes place mainly in stainless steel. Barrels now play different roles: imparting oak character or hints of the barrel’s previous resident (wine, spirits) on a beer; as a home for souring bacteria; or to allow beers, such as imperial stouts or barley wines, to gently oxidise.

AUSTRALIAN WILD ALE

l l e b e i Z l l i W Cheers,

28

While most breweries avoid contaminating their beer during fermentation, some encourage it. Wild beers are about allowing natural yeast and bacteria to add often funky complexities, whether by using coolships or other open vessels to allow nature to handle fermentation or introducing such elements via barrels. They can vary greatly, with wild yeast strains and different bugs creating qualities from earthy or acidic to fruity or barnyard like and more besides.

REVISITING THE 2017 PEOPLE’S CHOICE WINNER

HUSKY PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD THE BEST OF THE FEST

Many a fine beer has won the GABS People’s Choice Festival Beer, including Yeastie Boys’ Gunnamatta, La Sirene’s Praline, and Bacchus Brewing’s Peanut Brittle Gose. In 2017, Stockade Brew Co took the field by storm with it’s massive 12% Maple Imperial Stout The Mountie. We chat with Stockade about what the win meant for the team.

TELL US ABOUT STOCKADE BREW CO?

Stockade was founded on the basic principle of, “Beer. Explore It”. Discovering beer in all its forms and flavours is a journey and everyone is at a different stage in this journey. Even in our small team, we have people ranging from those who had never tried beer before through to seasoned veterans who could recite all of the specific ingredients in an obscure beer they’d once tried a decade ago whilst travelling through Germany. Exploring old and new styles, classic recipes and developing new variations on old themes, we hope to take our customers on this journey with us. With the opening of our new barrel house in Marrickville, Sydney, we are actively pursuing this ethos with a tasting room and constantly evolving roster of events including beer/food pairings, butchery classes and brewery tours - all part of an active learning environment where people choose to either chill and soak up the atmosphere, or get in there and expand their mind with all things beer related.

WHAT WAS THE IDEA BEHIND THE MOUNTIE? Our aim was pretty simple really: Recreate our awardwinning Russian Imperial Stout and give it a maple twist. What we ended up with after a few experiments

30

absolutely blew our socks off. So at this point, we had a bit of an idea that this beer could have wide appeal. After all, who doesn’t like maple syrup?! While we were concocting the perfect balance for this brew, we set to work on developing the imagery and name for it. With maple being heavily tied to Canada, we wanted to have a bit of fun with this reference and came up with the idea of a ripped mountie standing in an idyllic mountain setting, pouring maple syrup over himself, almost in an off-kilter version of Botticelli’s ‘The Birth of Venus’. The art was eventually commissioned to Johannes Leak to complete and he painted it with such beautiful detail in a classic style that we instantly knew it would perfectly suit our line-up of other Stockade labels.

WHAT DID THE WIN MEAN FOR YOU?

Winning the people’s choice award was massive for us. We put a lot of heart and soul into making The Mountie, from the liquid right through to the packaging and to win an award like this was a huge honour. It’s exposed our brewery to a bunch of new beer lovers and allowed us many an interesting conversation through social media about all our beers.

HAVE YOU CONTINUED TO MAKE THE BEER?

The Mountie was originally planned as one of 11 limited release beers for 2017. We’ve never brought back one of our limiteds but with the overwhelming response we received, we decided that The Mountie will ride again in Winter 2018. Look for it in July in bottle stores and venues around the country but of course, we’ll have some on tap at GABS this year too!

WHAT ARE YOU BREWING FOR US THIS YEAR?

This year we’re bringing a taste of what our new venue in Marrickville is all about - a bourbon barrel aged stout weighing in at a svelte 5.5% ABV. We’ve called it ‘Rockafella’, tipping our hat to 1920’s gangster noir and the hidden decadence of the speakeasies of the time. With a complex flavour profile, including dark chocolate, a decent dose of sweet raisins, hints of vanilla and cigar box, Rockafella showcases the best a stout can offer coupled with classic bourbon flavours imparted by the oak-ageing process.

HOW TO

FESTIVAL BEERS & CIDERS

HOW TO APPROACH THE FESTIVAL BEERS & CIDERS Brewed exclusively for the event, GABS Festival Beers & Ciders are an incredible showcase of creativity and diversity. Here’s how to get amongst it!

1

2

3

4

STEP

STEP

STEP

STEP

Your first step is to take a look at the Official Guide you’re given on arrival, or download the GABS 2018 App, to check out the 170 Festival Beers & Ciders made exclusively for the event. We’ve marked each beer and cider with our ‘traffic light’ indicators (Easier Drinking / Stepping Up / Adventurous) to give you some guidance on what might suit your tastes. More info on this on Page 32.

Your second step is to create a ‘Tasting Paddle’. We’ll have loads of these wooden paddles at the festival, and they allow you to get five different 85mL tasters in one hit. You can buy these 85mL tasters individually for $2.50 each, or a paddle of five for $11.50 (that’s a $1 saving bonus!).

Once you know what you want, use the chalk provided (again, it’s everywhere) to mark down the Festival Beer or Cider numbers on the paddle, take it to the appropriate container bar (there are three containers divided into sections), hand it to the bartender, and they’ll pour that bad boy for you.

And if you find something you want a little more of, at any time you can have your Souvenir Festival Glass filled with a 285mL serve of beer or cider. Prices for glass fills start from $6. You’re very welcome to keep and take home your Souvenir Festival Glass, but please place your Tasting Paddles in the Paddle Bins as you exit your session. Don’t start at tap number 1. The tap numbers are ordered alphabetically by brewery and don’t mean anything from a tasting perspective. But for som reason, lots of people stae there. Start somewhere elsrt e and avoid the queues.

PICK OF THE BUNCH

ALE OF A TIME’S EXPERT PICKS

WITH LUKE ROBERTSON

8 FESTIVAL BEERS & CIDERS YOU JUST GOTTA TRY. Such colour, noise, and chaos. So many beers and so many ciders. Where do you even start? Don’t worry fam, I got you covered out here in this crazy world. First, take a deep breath, then work out where the paddles are. They are probably next to a container or something I don’t know I’m not Google so maybe think for yourself and look at a map? I can help with the drinks though and have picked eight beers and ciders. Six you should absolutely put in a paddle and two you should take as a ‘Full Pour’ (I see you out there Michalowski). All from producers I have full confidence in. Let’s get a GABSin!

PADDLES

MOUSSEY JUICY

3 Ravens | New England IPA (6%) New England IPA is the new hotness in the beer world. Often (always) described as ‘hazy’ and ‘juicy’. This one is a bit different: A chocolate mousse version of the famed ‘Juicy’. It’s poured on nitro (think Guinness creamy), and will taste like vanilla, chocolate and fruity hops. Mouth watering yet?

DEATH BY NO CHILL

Australian Homebrewer Of The Year Ben Tearne | Porter (5.6%) I had to include a homebrewer because GABS loves to let homebrewers rep their thing on the big stage; and homebrewers are the best people. This is Australia’s 2017 Amateur National Homebrew Champion. There are hundreds of commercial brewers that would struggle in ANH competition. It’ll be gorgeous.

FULL POURS SATSUMA SAISON

Eagle Bay Brewing Company | Saison (6%) Harking back to French and Belgian farmhouse brewing, Saison is less a style and more a seasonal approach to brewing. Eagle Bay have taken a golden saison base, and dosed it with satsuma plums, pecans and honey. You’ll want a full pour fo’ sho’.

YARLINGTON MILL

Peckham’s Cider | Traditional cider (6.6%) Wild ferment, bittersweet apple cider from Peckham’s. Nothing more to this one that just time and apples. I don’t have a joke, or snappy line here. I wish I did but this doesn’t have any gimmicks or anything but it’ll be really good so just drink it, ok?

ESCARGOSE

Blackman’s Brewery | Gose (4.8%) If you told me Blackman’s would turn up with a snail beer I’d be all ‘what? Nah’, because the team there are all about making some of the best clean beers in the land. But you know what? Here I am saying: Yah. They rolled in with a Gose (salty German-style) and added Great Ocean Road snails, parsley, thyme, and pine nuts. I’ll be real with you because we are friends: I don’t know if this is going to work but we may as well find out.

ROCHDALE MOJITO CIDER

McCashin’s Brewery | Cider with fruit (4%) Crisp apple cider, mint, lime juice… whatevs I guess, you could probably do that at home right? How about adding a sneaky rum barrel in the mix? You got one of those at home? Haha you don’t. McCashin’s do though and they rammed this cider right on in and made you a cider Mojito.

ANTE-COLLABORATION ALE

Newstead Brewing Co | Australian Wild Ale (6%) Newstead enlisted the poindexters from University of Queensland to do a nerdy yeast thing (I’m totally into this by the way). They sussed out some wild yeast from around Queensland, cultured it up and used it in a hoppy pale. It’ll be a taste of Queensland. The ol’ Cane Toads. Bananaland.

MORNING GLORY

Three Wise Birds | Specialty Cider (6%) Coffee in beer is a snooze fest. We get it, you teamed up with a local roaster and added cold brew to your stout. Oh wow Mr/Mrs brewer, are you a crazy scientist? Haha. While coffee in beer is old hat, it’s certainly not played out in cider. I’ve never even heard of it being done. Get one

JUST A FEW OF OUR MELBOURNE EXHIBITORS

DAN MURPHY’S MARKETPLACE

MEET SOME OF OUR EXHIBITORS BALTER (QLD)

Founded by pro-surfers Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Josh Kerr and Bede Durbidge, and led by Head Brewer Scott Hargrave, the Currumbin based team are all about that sense of enjoyment you get from doing what you love. They believe beer is more than just a drink: it draws tribes together and is a companion to great moments in life. In just two years of operation, the brewery has won numerous plaudits, including 2017 AIBA Champion Medium Australian Brewery, as well as winning the GABS Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers of 2017 with their XPA.

COOPERS BREWERY (SA) To say the Cooper family is ‘born to brew’ may seem like a bold statement, but after dedicating over 155 years to the craft of brewing, there can be no doubt. For six generations, Coopers have been proud custodians of a legacy that began in 1862 when Thomas Cooper brewed his first batch of ale. Today, their naturally conditioned ales and stout, made using the same brewing methods that Thomas used, are enjoyed all around the world. This marriage of century-old brewing techniques and modern innovation is what makes Coopers unique in Australia’s brewing landscape.

GRAND RIDGE BREWING (VIC)

DON’T MISS YOUR CHANCE TO WIN THE GRAND RIDGE GOLDEN TICKE T

One of Australia’s first modern-craft breweries, Grand Ridge opened in 1989 and has since gone on to win a number of medals for its range of beers. This 100% family owned operation is housed in an old butter factory in Mirboo North (VIC) and has the mission to always make the best beer in the world. With a love for the environment as well as beer, the majority of its power is solar and ensure all of their packaging is fully recyclable.

VISIT THE STAND AND HAVE YOUR BEER CANNED LIVE IN FRONT OF YOU! IT’S ALL ABOU T ‘BROOLANDER ’. STRIKE YOUR B E BLUE STEEL & ST WIN!

FB*PROPAK (VIC) FB*PROPAK provides tailored processing and packaging engineered solutions to the brewing and distilling industry. With their qualified team of engineers, brewers, distillers and technicians, they have plenty of scope and depth to supply, customise and install your brewing and distilling equipment, large or small.

STOMPING GROUND BREWING CO (VIC) Stomping Ground is a neighbourhood brewery that brings people together over a great beer. Over a century ago Collingwood was the epicentre of Australian brewing and Stomping Ground is proud to return Melbourne brewing back to its original stomping ground. It’s all about beer for everyone, and flavours to suit all palates. You may know its founders from such festivals as this one.

FLYING BRICK CIDER CO (VIC) The black cockatoo has the local nickname, the Flying Brick. They are loved for their happy, playful, and cheeky disposition, and local legend says that if a flock flies overhead you are blessed with good luck. If you get Flying Brick Cider Co’s traditionally made, 100% juice cider in your glass, we are sure there will be good luck in that too.

GARAGE PROJECT (NZ) Three men, on a tiny kit in a garage, have grown Garage Project into an icon of not only Wellington craft beer, but NZ beer as a whole. Its launch in 2011 wasn’t simply one beer, but rather 24 beers in 24 weeks. This set the tone for the brewery’s creativity and ambitious approach. Since then it has expanded out of the Garage and into a nearby bar, new “Wild Workshop” and a new bar in Auckland.

Opened in 2013 by a pair of schoolmates who, when traveling around the world, enjoyed the sense of community that locally owned business can bring to an area. They chose to open in Teneriffe (QLD) because the suburb was the vibrant heart of Brisbane’s modern urban renewal. The mix of locals living in a diverse community reflects Green Beacon’s ethos of quality and hand crafted local product which is aimed at the discerning drinker.

HAWKERS BEER (VIC) A joint project from Melbourne restaurateur Joseph Abboud (Rumi, the Moor’s Head); and Mazen Hajjar; founder of Lebanese brewery ‘961’, the idea grew out of the time the pair spent around Melbourne ‘hawking’ Mazen’s original brand. Since opening in 2014 its grown larger and larger almost monthly. With a growing core range of cans and bottles, it’s also renowned for its big barrel aged styles. Always expect consistency and quality from Hawkers.

MOUNTAIN GOAT BEER (VIC) A pioneer of Australia’s craft beer scene with their first beer - Hightail Amber Ale - hitting pubs back in 1997. Twenty years on, Mountain Goat are still brewing beers unrestrained in flavour, technique and creativity - from Steam Ale, one of Australia’s first organic beers through to their award-winning Rare Breeds and Barrel Breeds. The brewery and Goat Bar still operate in the backstreets of Richmond, and is a favourite drinking spot for Melburnians on Wednesday and Friday nights, as well as Sunday afternoons.

PHILTER BREWING (NSW)

JUST A FEW OF OUR MELBOURNE EXHIBITORS

GREEN BEACON BREWING CO (QLD)

Philter Brewing focuses on making great sessionable beer that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Head Brewer Sam Füss was one of Australia’s first female brewers and has one of the most impressive CV’s in the business, with over 16 years experience as a brewer with Little Creatures and Young Henry’s, and as a renowned beer judge. After only four months on the market, Philter’s XPA was crowned Australia’s Champion Pale at the Craft Beer Industry Association Awards. Perhaps more treasured though was their award for The Most Bogan Nascar Branding Award. That’s Philter Brewing: great beer without the bullshit.

PRANCING PONY BREWERY (SA) Prancing Pony is all about making beer as pure as possible with their ‘all grain, all hop’ ethos. It avoids relying on gimmicks or added fruit or flavouring to its beers and instead focuses on making beer with the rich natural flavour of hops and malt. Based in Adelaide Hills, its brewshed is a fantastic visit, with great food to match its award winning beers.

SAMPLE BREW (VIC) Innovation is anything but business as usual, especially with SAMPLE Brew. Their experimentation with taste, quality and design reaches new heights with their latest experience, SAMPLE Modifiers. These experimental additives created in collaboration with visionary bartender Luke Whearty (Operation Dagger, Singapore) change the flavour structures of their existing range. Come and see how a dash from the SAMPLE Modifiers turn their Lager into a Saltbush Lagerita, their Pale Ale into a Mead Shandy and their 3/4 IPA into a Koji Caramel Boilermaker.

TRY THEIR ‘MODIFIERS’ FIRST AT GABS!

WILDFLOWER BREWING & BLENDING (NSW) It’s part science, part art, and all wild. Opening in mid-2017 in Marrickville (Sydney’s craft beer capital), Wildflower Brewing & Blending is a concept led by Topher Boehm, a brewer obsessed with challenging the senses. Wildflower ferments their beers with a diverse culture of brewers yeast, wild yeasts and bacteria. Known as ‘mixed fermentation’, they have developed a house culture with yeasts foraged from New South Wales that they experiment with and learn from on a daily basis. Their process allows those wild yeasts to express themselves in a positive way, and further blending of new and old barrel aged beer highlights the complexity in flavour the wild yeasts naturally create.

JUST A FEW OF OUR SYDNEY EXHIBITORS

DAN MURPHY’S MARKETPLACE

MEET SOME OF OUR EXHIBITORS AKASHA BREWING CO (NSW) Established in 2015, the Sydney brewery has established a reputation for high quality, hop-forward beers built around a culture of passion for their craft, community and ‘mateship’. The word ‘Akasha’ is a spiritual term borrowed from paganism that in this context refers to a fifth element. Akasha use the term to represent the extra soul they bring to beer’s basic ingredients of water, hops, malt and yeast.

BATCH BREWING CO (NSW) Making small quality beers one batch at a time, this Marrickville (NSW) brewery was started by two expat Americans who met playing lacrosse. Both were long time homebrewers and the decision to turn pro took two years of planning before it became reality. Now an established part of the thriving Sydney beer scene, Batch continue to stick to their ethos of producing small and unique batches of fresh, handcrafted beer.

WANT TO SEE YOUR FAVE BREWERS “ICE BUCKETED”? HERE’S THE PLACE!

BENTSPOKE BREWING CO (ACT) BentSpoke launched in 2014 with a Canberra brewpub, and soon outgrew it. Now, in addition to the original location, it has a second production facility and a core range of cans. The brewpub has a varied range, from barrel aged sour experiments, to insanely big IPAs (think 16% IIIPA), to some of the best handpumped English bitter in the country.

BREWMANITY (VIC) Launching in 2015, with former Melbourne Demons captain David Neitz at the helm, Brewmanity is all about contributing something good through craft beer. Since then it has raised over $150,000 for the Fight MND Foundation to help in the battle against Motor Neurone Disease. Their recipes are formulated by Mick Jonteff, a brewer with more experience than almost anyone in the industry. Their beer is great, and the cause is worthy.

CAPITAL BREWING CO (ACT) Capital Brewing launched in 2016, formed by a pair of friends with years of experience in hospitality, and the brothers Coombes from Batlow Cider. The team set about recruiting a brewer with experience at big US names like Green Flash and Coronado, and soon they were brewing out of their very own Canberra brewery. Expect hop focussed, West Coast-style American beers.

FOX HAT BREWING (SA) Founded in 2008 as the McLaren Vale Beer Company, what’s now known as Vale Brewing began contract brewing before opening their own site in Willunga (SA) in 2012. Since then it has expanded on its core range; as well as starting an offshoot brand known as Fox Hat Brewing who produce limited edition and small batch beer. In 2017 they were bought by another South Australian family brand, Bickfords, and also launched Hobo Brewing.

GAGE ROADS BREWING CO (WA) Based just outside Fremantle since 2005, they take their name from the strip of ocean that separates Freo and Rottnest. Gage Roads is home to surfers and swimmers; seagulls and sharks; ships and sailors. It’s a place where you can relax, escape, explore, or seek out adventure. They saw a lot of themselves in that little spot. In 2009, Woolworths bought a stake in the business, and in 2016, Gage Roads bought it back.

Goose Island landed in Australia in 2017, but it’s not a newcomer to the beer world. With more than three decades of brewing out of its Chicago brewpub, and creating the pioneering bourbon barrel aged Bourbon County Brand Stout, it’s one of the most well known breweries in the world. Since being purchased by AB InBev in 2011, its extended its reach around the world with great brewpubs and plenty more beer.

SIX STRING BREWING CO (NSW) Six String is brewery named after the founder and brewer’s love for rock, that has a guitar pick for a logo and the tagline ‘Amplified Ales’. Based in NSW the breweries tins can be found around the country and since 2012 has won a cult following for their Dark Red IPA, consistently one of the best beers in the country.

FANCY YOURS ELF AS THE GUITAR HERO? HERE’S YOUR CHANCE TO PROVE IT.

FERAL BREWING CO (WA) Established in 2002 in the heart of WA’s Swan Valley, Feral may be one of the most awarded and well regarded in Australia. A longtime favourite of GABS audiences and Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers voters, Feral also regularly tops Critic’s Choice lists and has a slew of AIBA Champion Brewery awards to back up their passion for brewing exceptional beer. Now owned by Coca-Cola Amatil, the Swan Valley brewery is now used as an experimental brewhouse by Product Innovation Brewer Will Irving.

THE COASTAL BREWING CO (NSW) David and Helen Black, the husband and wife team behind Coastal Brewing launched the brewery in 2017. They are all about locality and even link each beer name to the natural beauty of the Great Lakes and Manning Valley area. That’s all reflected in the breweries philosophy: LIFE - Local, Independent, Fresh, Everytime. It is a small operation but the beer is increasingly finding its way around NSW.

WAYWARD BREWING CO (NSW) Starting out in 2012 as a nomadic brewer, founder of Wayward Brewing Co, Peter Phillip now has a permanent home in Sydney’s Inner West. Wayward likes to say it’s brewing ‘wayward beers for wayward people’ and its range pays homage to classic European styles while creating beers with a distinctly Wayward twist. It’s about the ethos of travellers, a desire to see round the corner, and taking the road less travelled.

WILLIE SMITH’S CIDER (TAS) William Smith & Sons is Australia’s first certified organic cidery, built at the farm in the Huon Valley (TAS), where William Smith started orcharding in 1888. The orchard is run by Andrew, the 4th generation of the Smith family to farm in the Huon. All of its ciders use only fruit grown on their farm where it’s all crushed, fermented, aged and bottled. Its possibly the most well known Australian independent cider maker, and with good reason.

YULLI’S BREWS (NSW) Yulli’s Brews is a small brewing company started in 2014 by James Harvey and Karl Cooney in Sydney. It was borne out of Yulli’s restaurant in Surrey Hills which is known for its vegetarian food and craft beer. After a few years brewing nomadically around Sydney and NSW, it has just found a home in Sydney and is creating more beers than ever.

SYDNEY FOOD

STREET FOOD CITY Need something to soak up those tasty beers? We’ve got you covered. DIRTY BIRD HAPPY AS LARRY Probably one of Sydney’s most loved food trucks, Happy as Larry’s pop-up pizzeria stages a triumphant return to GABS. With an emphasis on fresh produce and a traditional Napoli influence, you’ll be Happy as Larry with one of their pizzas.

Sydney’s only American-Asian fried chicken specialist has the seal of approval from none other than the likes of Katy Perry (apparently!). Try the Dirty Bird Famous Wings with a side of Animal Fries. If the stars love it, we’re sure you will too.

CHUR BURGER

TSURU

Not your ordinary sausage sizzle, these bangers are next level. Options include Spanish chorizo, Italian pork, veal & fennel, Moroccan merguez lamb and South American beef parrilleros sausages. Holy smokes.

VEJOES

Vejoes is the best vegetarian food truck in town! They’ll be bringing their delicious halloumi burgers, veggie quesadillas and smoked tofu burgers. Go on, it’s good for you and the planet.

Bringing the essence of Asian street food to GABS, Tsuru will be dishing up their signature steamed pillowy buns with various fillings. Fresh and scrumptious, boy are we excited about these flavours.

Where America meets the Middle East, these street eats capture the best of both worlds. 24 hour smoked brisket shawarma burgers, cheeseburgers with Middle Eastern lamb and Mac’n’Cheese mixed into the patty and falafel burgers aka the veg po’boys. This will definitely not be your standard street food.

AREPA

What is an Arepa, you ask? Only one of Venezuela’s most sacred treats… a pancake-like corn pocket filled with all manner of awesomeness such as black beans and pulled pork. Move over taco.
