WELCOME TO GABS 2019 Hello again AUCKLAND! Since we started this event nine years ago at The Local Taphouse in St Kilda, Melbourne, our mission has been simple. GABS has always been about sharing our love of craft beer and cider with as many people as possible. So we’re thrilled now to be, once again, extending the GABS experience to New Zealand and its vibrant craft beer scene. Wherever you are in your own craft beer and cider ‘journey’ - whether you’re just starting out, or well down the rabbit hole - we want to help you take just one step further. In this Guide, you’ll find helpful tasting tools, ‘traffic light’ colour guides to beer complexity, and informative tasting notes to help you plan your approach. You can sample up to 90 different ‘Festival Beers & Ciders’ made exclusively for the event. Chat to the people behind the brews at the Liquorland Marketplace. Or learn from the best at the Ariston Food & Drink Experience and GABS Craft College. And most importantly, take in all the festival has to offer, and have a brilliant time with your mates over some fantastic beers and ciders. We couldn’t do this without hundreds of brewers and cidermakers across New Zealand and Australia who work so hard to make GABS so special. Thanks also to our partners, food vendors, staff and suppliers. And our warmest thanks to the hundreds of volunteers for donating their time so that every person here can have such a great time. Enjoy yourselves and please drink responsibly.

DON’T FEEL LIKE BEER?
Free water will be available at stations throughout the festival hall, or from each exhibitor bar. Remember to keep hydrated to make sure you can go the distance. Spirits are available at The Boilermaker Bar by Renaissance. And soft drinks, water and other non-alcoholic drinks will also be available to purchase at some of the food stalls.

THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN
GABS HOTTEST 100
KIWI CRAFT BEERS OF 2018 NOW IN ITS THIRD YEAR, THE GABS HOTTEST 100 KIWI CRAFT BEERS POLL SHINES A POWERFUL SPOTLIGHT ON THE TRENDS, BRANDS AND BREWERIES SHAPING THE BOOMING CRAFT BEER INDUSTRY. BASED ON THE HUGELY POPULAR AUSSIE POLL, THE 2018 EDITION SAW THOUSANDS OF CRAFT BEER LOVERS VOTE FOR THEIR FIVE FAVOURITE CRAFT BEERS OF THE YEAR, THEN CELEBRATE THE LIVE COUNTDOWN ON SATURDAY 2 FEBRUARY.
GARAGE PROJECT GRABS THE TITLE Having always dominated the poll with the largest number of placings, this year Garage Project took out the top spot for the first time with ‘Pernicious Weed’, also claiming second with ‘DFA’ (formerly known as ‘Death From Above’), as well as another 23 positions throughout the list with beers ranging from white peach sours to barrel aged porters. Previous two-time winner ‘Supercharger’ from Upper Hutt’s Panhead Custom Ales retained a podium position with third place.
AUCKLAND REIGNS
Breweries from the Auckland region were represented in force, lead by Behemoth Brewing Co with 16 beers (including three in the top ten), 8 Wired (8 beers) and Epic Beer and Liberty Brewing with 6 beers each. Deep Creek also featured prominently, with its highest placing at #8 with ‘Brewtiful Haze’, a New England IPA brewed in collaboration with leading craft beer retailer Liquorland. This was one of an impressive 36 beers made for the first time in 2018 to place in the Hottest 100, indicating the impact a popular release can have in a short time in the fast-moving craft beer industry.
GABS FESTIVAL BEERS
Steve Jeffares, co-Founder of GABS Festival and the GABS Hottest 100 poll, noted the placing of several ‘GABS Festival Beers’ on the list: “Every year at our festivals, we put the call out to the brewing industry to brew a unique beer to be released at the events. Many of these ‘Festival Beers’ go on to become a core beer for those breweries, and it’s great to see eight of those beers voted into this year’s Hottest 100, including Garage Project’s standout ‘DFA’, and the 2018 GABS People’s Choice winner ‘Mocha Madness’ from Behemoth.”
MORE THAN A HAZE CRAZE
As a beer style, the New England IPA (or ‘Hazy IPA’) has taken the beer world by storm over the last two years, and with 17 beers placing in the Hottest 100 list (up from 6 in 2017), it seems that New Zealand has also been swept up in the ‘haze craze’. While hop-driven beers were dominant with 66% of the list, the Kiwi poll showed greater diversity of beer styles than its Australian counterpart, with a healthy number of sour beers, stouts and lagers making the cut.

ADVENTUROUS For the craft aficionado, the ‘Adventurous’ beers and ciders are where it’s at. From tart and funky sours to big ABV barleywines and everything in between.
The name might hark back to the days of the British Empire but, in the world of modern craft beer, India Pale Ales are first and foremost there to showcase hops, the little green flowers that can lend beers aroma, flavour and bitterness. Known for their punchy flavours and aromas and typically possessing bold bitterness, IPAs are synonymous with characteristics such as floral, citrusy, tropical, earthy and piny. Session IPAs at one end and Double / Imperial IPAs at the other mean it’s the kind of beer that can sit below 4 percent ABV but can also be cranked up into double figures; at last year’s GABS, Akasha entered a quadruple IPA as their Festival Beer… As modern brewers continue to push boundaries, a growing number of IPA substyles have popped up in recent years with the category seemingly destined to undergo an endless evolution. Here’s some of the latest riffs you’re likely to find pouring from the Husky Container Bars.
HAZY IPA’s
KNOW YOUR BEER STYLES
IPA
Credited as originating with brewers in America’s New England region, hazy IPAs have myriad beer fans, a fair few critics and a brewer’s kettle worth of names. New England-style, Vermontstyle, juicy or hazy can all precede IPA in a style that pours far cloudier than the clear and bright appearance once seen as a goal for brewers. The haze can be derived from a number of brewing techniques, including the use of certain yeast strains, specific malt bills – including oats and wheat – and huge late hop additions. Hazy IPAs are known for their low bitterness, smooth texture and hop flavours that tend to resemble citrus or tropical fruit juice.
BRUT IPA’s
Borrowing from the world of champagne and sparkling wine, Brut IPAs are known for their bone-dry finish. By making use of the enzyme known as amylase, complex sugars that yeast usually can’t consume are broken down so they can be converted to alcohol, thus stripping residual sweetness from the finished beer. That dryness paired with a restrained bitterness and lively carbonation means aromatic and flavoursome hops are left to shine unhindered and makes for a beer where, in the best examples, drinkability is turned all the way up to 11.
MILKSHAKE IPA’s
Lactose has been used in brewing for more than a century, though typically it’s found a home in darker beers like stouts. It’s a form of sugar that naturally occurs in milk and, since it can’t be fermented by traditional brewer’s yeast, it can add a sweetness and creamier texture to any beer. In recent years, brewers have started adding lactose – along with vanilla and all manner of fruits – to IPAs to make beers that are typically sweeter, creamier, fruitier and richer than your traditional IPA. Sound decadent? They can be. But, since you’re at GABS, indulge away as you explore what can happen when brewers let their creative sides run free.

THE BEST OF THE FEST MANY A FINE BEER HAS WON THE GABS PEOPLE’S CHOICE FESTIVAL BEER, INCLUDING YEASTIE BOYS’ GUNNAMATTA, LA SIRENE’S PRALINE, AND BACCHUS BREWING’S PEANUT BRITTLE GOSE. IN 2018, BEHEMOTH BREWING CO TOOK HOME THE TROPHY (FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW!) WITH THEIR HUGELY POPULAR MOCHA MADNESS RUSSIAN IMPERIAL STOUT. WE CHAT WITH BEHEMOTH FOUNDER ANDREW CHILDS ABOUT WHAT THE WIN MEANT FOR THE TEAM. TELL US ABOUT BEHEMOTH BREWING CO?
Behemoth is all about making big tasting beer that is jam packed full of fun. We are just about to turn six years old and we have made over 120 beers in that time, all while refining our core range. We love trying out new hop combinations and seeing how we can bring massive amounts of flavour into our beers all while making the packaging as the fun as the contents.
WHAT WAS THE IDEA BEHIND MOCHA MADNESS?
Our Triple Chocolate Milk Stout has been incredibly popular since it won the People’s Choice at Beervana 2019, so we decided that a bigger Milk Stout with a similar amount of chocolate flavour along with cold brew coffee would be the perfect choice! Lots of coffee and chocolate flavour all coming together and as smooth as silk.
WHAT DID THE WIN MEAN FOR YOU?
Winning the GABS People’s Choice for the second time was pretty incredible. Really it just means that people are enjoying our beer and we can’t ask for more than that. It is the reason I got into the beer game in the first place.
No more satisfying feeling than people drinking something that you have dreamed up and got into people’s hands.
WILL MOCHA MADNESS RISE AGAIN?
Maybe... we are planning on opening up a brew pub later this year and that will give us a chance to re-brew some of our favourite beers and give people the opportunity to try things that they may have missed the first time round.
WHAT ARE YOU BREWING FOR US THIS YEAR?
Now we are incredibly excited to be teaming up with Fix and Fogg Peanut Butter to create a Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Imperial Stout called “The Fix”. We have used real peanuts and Dutch cocoa powder in a massive 8.5% Imperial Stout to recreate Fix and Fogg Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter in Imperial Stout form.

HOW TO 6 11 APPROACH THE FESTIVAL BEERS & CIDERS Available at the Husky Container Bars, Festival Beers & Ciders are brewed especially for GABS. Some are made in a traditional style, perhaps with a twist, while others are highly creative. With so many Festival Beers & Ciders on offer at GABS, sampling is the name of the game. Here’s how to get started... • OPEN THE GABS GUIDE OR APP AND CHOOSE A HUSKY CONTAINER BAR SECTION TO START FROM. PRO TIP: DON’T START AT BAR A / SECTION 1 AND YOU’LL AVOID THE EARLY QUEUES. • CHOOSE YOUR FESTIVAL BEERS OR CIDERS FROM THAT SECTION AND CHALK THE BEER NUMBERS ON A TASTING PADDLE IN SEQUENTIAL ORDER. USE THE ‘TRAFFIC LIGHT’ INDICATORS AS A GUIDE TO WHAT MIGHT SUIT YOUR TASTES. PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL BEERS 9% ABV (OR HIGHER) CAN ONLY BE SERVED IN 85ML TASTERS, AND THERE IS A MAXIMUM OF TWO 9% ABV (OR HIGHER) TASTERS PER TASTING PADDLE. • HEAD TO YOUR CHOSEN HUSKY CONTAINER BAR SECTION AND HAVE YOUR PADDLE FILLED. EVEN BETTER, RINSE AND REUSE YOUR TASTING CUPS AFTERWARD AND SCORE $1 OFF ANY SUBSEQUENT PADDLES! • VOTE FOR YOUR FAVES IN THE RATEBEER PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS VIA THE GABS APP OR WEBSITE!

8 WIRED BREWING CO AUK
Based in Warkworth, 8 Wired make a range of bold new world styles along with one of the largest barrel ageing programs in the Southern Hemisphere. 8 Wired excels at brewing a range of beers; from fresh and hop-forward, to aged and sour. Trying their beers, it’s no surprise that 8 Wired have been NZ’s Champion Brewer in the past.
BACH BREWING CO AUK Auckland based Bach have a passion for brewing tasty beers inspired by the New Zealand icon of escape, freedom and good times - the classic Kiwi Bach. Founder and head brewer Craig Cooper started his journey at the former Limburg Beer Company in Hastings, and after a stint working overseas, returned home to revive his famous beers under the Bach brand.
BEHEMOTH BREWING CO AUK Behemoth won a staggering 16 spots in the GABS Hottest 100 Kiwi Craft Beers poll, and was voted National Brewery of the Year in the Society of Beer Advocates poll. The beers lean towards the hop forward and the hazy, and with a brewer so tall he’s known as the “Beer Giraffe”, it’s a brand that is huge in every way.
BOOTLEG BREWERY WKO Launching in 2016, Bootleg is two friends who say they were ‘born to brew great beer’. When it started they set about delivering it around Hamilton in an old Holden Kingswood. Since then the Holden has gone to the big wreckers in the sky, but the boys have picked up a few medals for their beers, and a Trophy for their Apehanger IPA in the NZ Brewers Guild Awards.
BREWAUCRACY WKO Brewaucracy started in 2011 as a contract brewery, and hobby project for Society of Beer Advocates founder Greig McGill, and friend Phil Murray. The plan was to make styles with integrity, and beers they loved to drink, rather than chasing trends. After a two year radio silence, the pair burst back into the world with their brewpub in Hamilton.
CASSELS & SONS BREWERY CAN Cassels & Sons’ Brewery restaurant and café is known throughout Christchurch for the medal winning craft beers and crafted Euro-style fresh gourmet thin-based pizzas. All the food is made onsite using fresh produce from the Woolston Market. The microbrewery beer is brewed on site and they also have a selection of wines to complement their excellent New Zealand dining.
COLAB BREWING AUK Three great brewing nations, Germany, Britain, and New Zealand combine to create high quality beer at Colab Brewing. Well, not the entire nations, of course but residents of. You can find the trio brewing on the fringes of Riverhead and Kumeu, in New Zealand’s north.
DECO CITY HKB Deco City is a homage to the city of Napier. Napier was destroyed by an earthquake in 1931 and was then rebuilt in the world famous Art Deco style. The brewery is located in the former National Tobacco building, the most photographed Art Deco building in New Zealand, if not the world. Deco City only brews best in class beer. It is not an experimental brewery.
DEEP CREEK BREWING CO AUK 2017 AIBA Champion Small International Brewery winner, Deep Creek is based in Silverdale, north Auckland, and specialise in brewing ‘flavour fuelled beers’. Aside from the permanent range, Deep Creek releases monthly brews under its three projects of Lupulin Effect (IPAs), Steam Funk (funky sours), and Nero (dark beers). It also had five beers in the 2018 GABS Hottest 100 Kiwi Craft Beers list.
36
Epic has been nailing hop forward IPAs in New Zealand since before your favourite brewer even knew what a hop was. Founder Luke Nicholas has been called a ‘one trick pony’ for his love of IPAs but when he brews one as good as Hop Zombie, why would anyone complain? For Epic, it’s all about celebrating the Epic journeys everyone takes to get to reach NZ - from the canoes of the first peoples to the tourists by the planeload.
FORTUNE FAVOURS BEER WGN Housed in an old industrial building in the beating heart of Wellington’s CBD, surrounded by like minded brewers and bars, Fortune Favours is the product of Wellington hospitality veterans who wanted to strike out on their own. The old industrial building, a former furniture restoration business, has been refurbed and is now pumping out great beer and food.
GARAGE PROJECT WGN Three men, on a tiny kit in a garage, have grown Garage Project into an icon of not only Wellington craft beer, but NZ beer as a whole. Its launch in 2011 wasn’t simply one beer, but rather 24 beers in 24 weeks. This set the tone for the brewery’s creativity and ambitious approach. Since then it has expanded out of the Garage and into a nearby bar, new “Wild Workshop” and a new bar in Auckland.
HALLERTAU BREWERY AUK Named as a tribute to the Bavarian Hallertau region, famed for its hops, Hallertau is a bit more esoteric than the German name suggests. Founders Stephen and Hayley Plowman say they have veered off into ‘exuberant Westie mode via their fearlessly unique and smartly executed brews’. They have long championed vibrant flavour and quality ingredients over commercial viability. And they are damned good at it too.
ISTHMUS BREWING AUK A husband and wife team based in Auckland, Isthmus’ beers have won medals in the 2014 and 2015 NZ Brewer’s Guild Awards, before taking a wee hiatus due to two little kids and a huge house renovation. But now they’re back on track and dedicated to bringing you our unique and flavoursome craft beers.
KERERU BREWING CO WGN Named for the kerurus (wood pigeons) that are found in NZ, Kereru began life in Chris Mills and Natasha Dahlberg’s shed and rumpus room; which they turned into a brewery and commercial kitchen. Since outgrowing that they have moved to a factory space in Upper Hutt and use all New Zealand grown ingredients where possible.
LAKEMAN BREWING WKO On the shores of the great Lake Taupõ, tales abound of a mythical beast. He’s a big hairy bugger and the locals call him Lakeman. And the rumour has it, he loves a good craft beer. So in 2013, James & Elissa Cooper created their brewery in his honour. Brewed with Taupõ’s purest natural water, Lakeman beers boast malty, hoppy flavours as big as the myth itself.
LAUGHING BONES BREWING CO AUK Laughing Bones focus on a few things. Style, flavour, approachability and drinkability. For them, that’s what it’s all about - and maybe sometimes with a slight twist. At its heart, however, is beer that will make you take notice and providing something that’s of high quality for everyone.
LIBERTY BREWING CO AUK Joe Wood of Liberty Brewing is a man of few words. All he really wants to do is “brew shit hot beer”. Fortunately for him, he’s pretty good at it and when you talk about great NZ beers that are loaded with hops, he’s probably the first person you should name.
