We are so excited to be back for GABS 2022, after two really challenging years for event organisers and the whole craft beer industry, it’s just so good to welcome you through the doors in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne! For 11 years now, GABS has been bringing us all together for a great craft beer experience as we provide a platform to connect with so many of Australia and New Zealand’s most loved breweries. It’s a great opportunity for you to meet the breweries behind your favourite beers and take your taste palate on a whole new journey as you explore the famous GABS Festival Beers! Try to visit all the exhibitor stands as you share five hours of fun with us. You will discover brands you are familiar with and be introduced to new names as you explore all our aisles. Stop in and say g’day and enjoy the many activations the breweries have in store for you. Try your hand at Atomic’s spinning wheel, ride the Young Henry’s Tinnie, take on all comers at the Balter Tins of Glory and show off your great arm in the Mountain Goat Cornhole Championship. Of course, GABS wouldn’t be complete without circus performers,

HOW TO TASTE BEER When tasting a beer, there’s so much more than swilling it down. Even though tasting is an individual thing, there are a few steps which if followed will take your beer tasting to a blissful level.

LOOK First things first! Pour your beer into a clear glass, pause and take a good look at it. Raise the beer in front of you but don’t hold it up to direct light. Pay attention to the colour, clarity, foam and consistency. SWIRL Gently swirl the beer in the glass to unlock its aromas, stimulate carbonation and test head retention. SMELL Take two quick sniffs through your nose and then one long one. Try breathing with your mouth open and closed and take note of what you sense. TASTE Take a small sip but don’t swallow right away. Instead, allow the beer to linger in your mouth which will allow the beer’s characteristics and flavours to shine through. Fruity, smoky, smooth? What do you experience. MOUTHFEEL How does the beer feel in your mouth? It could be light and airy or it might be heavy and viscous? Is it very bubbly? The mouthfeel will be different depending on the style of beer, brewing methods and ingredient quality. EVALUATE Take notes! Beer tasting is an individual experience. The more tasting you do it, the better you’ll get at understanding your own preferences.

A BARKING GOOD BEER FOR A PAWSOME CAUSE Bright Brewery DoggoBrau – brewed for humans who love dogs, and great beer! Here at Bright, we’re so passionate about pups (we even have our own doggy Instagram @doggosofbrightbrewery) that we wanted to find a way to bring two of our passions – beer and dogs – together. The result: DoggoBrau Tropical XPA! DoggoBrau is a barking good collaboration with RSPCA Victoria and, after the pawsome success of last year’s release, we're excited to announce its return! We're so pawssionate about pups that we brewed DoggoBrau Tropical XPA in 2021, with a follow-up Double Doggo Double XPA released later the same year. And now it’s back – and better than ever! Part proceeds from every DoggoBrau sold goes directly to RSPCA Victoria to help rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals in need. Bright Brewery Marketing Manager Laura Gray said DoggoBrau was a fun, accessible extra pale ale which appeals to drinkers across the beer spectrum. “It’s a very light, fresh beer with a slightly fruity finish, so it’s super relatable and really refreshing,” Ms Gray said. Bright is celebrating the return of DoggoBrau with a host of ‘Doggo Days’ throughout Victoria this Autumn, kicking off with a special event at the Edinburgh Castle Hotel on May 1 and culminating at the infamous GABS Festival, at the Royal Exhibition Buildings in late May. “Dog, and beer, lovers can head down to these Doggo Days, and to the GABS Festival, to meet the teams from Bright and RSPCA Vic, taste some great beer, and meet some adorable RSPCA pups that are available for adoption,” Ms Gray said.

7 SUNSHINE COAST CRAFT BEERS YOU MUST TRY When you think about the Sunshine Coast three things should spring to mind: sun, surf and craft beer. This pristine pocket of Queensland coastline has earned itself the title of ‘Craft beer Capital of Australia’ – and for good reason. The Sunshine Coast is now home to more than 21 breweries located from the coast to the hinterland, each with their own story to tell. No one knows the region’s beer scene better than local expert Josh Donohoe, who runs Sunshine Coast Craft Beer Tours.

amazing ride. Light pink in colour with strawberries on the nose, this tart and refreshing beer is anything but sweet. The ‘Strawbarb’ as it’s known locally, tastes like summer in a glass! PIPELINE 10 Toes Brewery, Alexandra Headland An award-winning pale ale that is a hit with the locals. Freshly cut tropical fruits are balanced against a clean malt profile. This full flavoured pale ale is bursting with new world character. Enjoy this one fresh on tap at the brewery if possible. TRILOGY IPA Moffat Beach Brewing Co., Moffat Beach & Caloundra The most awarded brewery on the coast, and with a passion for hop forward beers, you have to try the Trilogy IPA (India Pale Ale). A hefty amount of West Coast hops creates a big, luscious beer, exploding with pine and tropical aromas. BAT MIGRATION Boiling Pot Brewery, Noosaville This dark lager often surprises the unsuspecting drinker who swears they don’t like dark beers. Enjoy the chocolate and coffee notes of a dark beer and the easy drinking nature of a lager.

To put his knowledge - and his taste buds - to the test, we asked Josh to name his top 7 ‘must try’ craft beers on the Sunshine Coast. No doubt it was a difficult task (how can you pick just seven?) but for the love of beer, Josh narrowed down his top picks for a cold one next time you’re on the Sunny Coast.

LARRY PALE ALE Your Mates Brewing, Warana It’s been voted the third best beer in Australia, but who is Larry you ask? Larry is a tasty pale ale that showcases a range of hops with tropical fruit notes. It’s nicely balanced with a touch of light crystal malt and designed to be an easy drinking crowd pleaser.

JAPANESE LAGER Heads of Noosa, Noosaville For the easy-going drinkers, the lager purists, and those just looking for an exceptionally made beer, you can’t go past Heads of Noosa’s Japanese Lager. Clean, crisp, and perfect for an afternoon knock off beer while watching the sun go down.

JUICEBOX HAZY IPA Land & Sea Brewery, Noosaville The name says it all. This New England style IPA packs a juicy punch from the generous amount of hops added throughout the brewing process. Mango, lychee, and pineapple notes balanced with a clean and smooth finish.

STRAWBERRY & RHUBARB SOUR Brouhaha Brewery, Maleny and Baringa Sour styles have taken the industry by storm, and this gem from Brouhaha will take your tastebuds on an

THE DAINTON DIFFERENCE About 30kms south-east of Melbourne’s CBD, Carrum Downs is home to Australian owned Dainton Beer and the origin of not one but two Hottest 100 Beers of 2021 - #38 Blood Orange NEIPA and #84 Jungle Juice Hazy IPA. We caught up with Head Brewer, Cam Turner to find out what makes him tick! Dainton Beer says that everyone has the right to be different and to be themselves. Tell us a little about what the brand means to you. To me the beer and the business run in parallel lines, always authentically Dainton. It's fun, creative, always pushing the boundaries and bringing people together. What got you into brewing in the first place? Travelling overseas and trying a world of new beer styles I'd never tasted. I think at that stage the Coopers pale and James Squires amber ale were the crafty beers. It was back in the early 2000's and the US craft industry was in its boom, and there were a lot of fun and interesting beers to try. What does a normal day at the brewery look like for you? The brewery runs double shifts as well as the packing line, with constant inventory coming in and going out. It's go go go! Any other passions outside of brewing beer? Drinking beer and camping, and drinking beer when camping. What is your personal favourite beer style to drink? At the moment classic clean pilsner's. Hold on - we just packed a delicious wheat beer, now it's that! This year’s GABS Festival beer, “Return of the Red Eye” is a massive 11.8% Red IPA. Tell us about the inspiration for the beer, what you are going through from an ingredient and brew process & what the punter can expect from the final product? We've taken a bit of a punt and a hit on this beer to make something very special for GABS. We have taken our trophy winning 4D Imperial Red IPA with its DNA stemming from our original Red Eye Rye, which we brewed back in Feb 2021. It was laid to rest in French Oak which has had 2 previous lives as red wine barrels and then a whiskey barrels. The 1 year old barrel-aged

beer has then been transferred back into our fermenters where it has been back blended with a fresh batch and left to naturally carbonate. It then gets a large dry hop addition of citra, mosaic simcoe and columbus. You can expect aromas and flavours of rye spice, bush honey, dark fruit and dank powerful hops. Finally, what is something that nobody in the brewing industry knows about you? Whether or not I surf standing natural or goofy, I am just a goofy surfer.

HERO AT ZERO By GABS resident writer, Beer Diva Kirrily Waldhorn

When mega-ginormous Scottish craft brewery Brew Dog launches as a world’s first, an entire bar that is completely AF (Alcohol Free people… not what you were thinking!), and more recently Dan Murphy’s opening their first ever bar, ‘Zero%’ and serving all alcohol free drinks, it is a definite signal that our drinking culture is experiencing a seismic AF shift.

brewing 0% beers for years. The German Association of Brewers state that appx 1 in 15 beers consumed in Germany don't contain any alcohol and the 1,500 breweries in Germany are producing between 400-500 alcohol free beers. Famous German breweries including Erdinger, Weihenstephaner, Holsten and Clausthaler are all distributing their alcohol-free beers in Australia.

For many of us, our health and wellbeing is front and centre in our everyday lifestyles choices, and therefore, it’s no surprise that more and more of us are actively selecting to abstain from alcohol be that occasionally or for some, completely. There is a general desire to give ourselves a rest from the booze and a much needed re-set, a conscious un-coupling from alcohol, if you like. As such, the time is absolutely ripe to offer more palatable, more adult options than the standard lemon, lime and bitters, lime and soda or soft drink.

Plenty of our smaller craft breweries are also brewing up amazing tasting beer offers in the no/low alc space. Breweries such as Big Drop, Brick Lane, Heaps Normal, Modus Operandi’s NORT, and Aussie pioneers Sobah are all doing great things in this emerging style.

We have seen a growing number of breweries, large and small, tapping in to the AF beer trend. When Carlton Zero hit the shelves, it was soon followed by Heineken Zero. Coopers, as players in the zero alcohol beer segment were definitely ahead of their time and have been producing their ‘ultra-light’ 0.5% (legally, alcohol free can have up to 0.5% abv) Birrell for quite some time, with it ranged primarily in supermarkets! For the Germans however, all this fuss about no alcohol beers seems quite ridiculous given they have been

32

Europe was interestingly the inspiration for Australia’s first alcohol-free craft beer brand, Sobah. Co-owner of Sobah, Clinton Shultz, spent time in Europe where he found it commonplace to order non-alcoholic beer at a bar or restaurant. Launching in October 2017, Sobah produces a core range of three different beers all of which incorporate native ingredients as a proud nod to his Aboriginal heritage, including their Lemon Aspen Pilsner, Finger Lime Cerveza and a Pepperberry IPA. Complementing the Sobah core range is an ever-evolving line up of limited release beers, proving that Sobah are serious about being a player in the Australian craft beer market. They are also the first to create alcohol-free beers that would be at home in any crafty venue. Darren McKenzie, Dan Murphy’s, tells us that he has seen non-alcoholic beer as being, “one of the fastest growing sub-categories within beer over the past 12 months”. He goes on to say, “Whilst there has always been a core loyal base of customers, as new beer entrants enter the market so have new customers who are looking for beer alternatives. The customer is looking for ‘better for you’ options, and looking to moderate their intake”. I think we can safely say that zero-alcohol beers whilst still in their infancy, are have plenty of scope for growth for in Australia. This is definitely an exciting, “watch this space” segment that by all predictions will be taking over some shelf & tap space in your local, before you know it!

FESTIVAL BEERS PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY

GABS 2022

HOW TO APPROACH THE FESTIVAL BEERS Every year we put the call out to Australia and New Zealand’s best brewers to create something special for our festivals. For those brewers, it’s an opportunity to push their creative flair, break boundaries, and showcase their talents. These beers, ciders and seltzers are unique, one-of-a-kind, first time, and exclusive releases in every sense. Some are made in a traditional style, perhaps with a twist, while others are highly creative. With so many Festival Beers on offer at GABS, sampling is the name of the game.

Here’s how to get started... There are almost 120 festival beers to choose from, spread across 6 sections. You will find 3 sections on each side of a container bar. For ease of serving, only beers in the same section can be ordered in a tasting paddle. To start, open the GABS guide or web app and view the list of Dan Murphy’s festival beers. Use the ‘traffic light’ indicators as a guide to what might suit your tastes. Grab a tasting paddle and chalk the beer numbers on the paddle in sequential order.

RINSE, REUSE & SAVE! Reuse your Taster Cups and save $1 on your next paddle!

Head to your chosen Dan Murphy’s container bar section and have your paddle filled. Even better, rinse and reuse your tasting cups afterward and score $1 off any subsequent paddles! Don’t forget to vote for your faves in the people’s choice awards

Water is available at the water station. Remember to stay hydrated!

Impressive performances too from many small independent breweries that keep our beer economy alive and employ so many young Australians. In the battle between the states, Queensland set the bar at 30 with Black Hops and Balter combining to claim an amazing 11 of those spots. Victoria took 22, NSW 20, ACT 12, SA and WA 8 each. Also released is the Hottest 100 New Brews list which is dedicated to beers produced for the very first time in 2021 and as they ranked in the GABS Hottest 100. The new brew 100 list is spread across an incredible 57 different breweries, of all sizes, with many limited releases grabbing the consumers' imagination. GABS 2022

Hoppy, Malty, Fruity… Spice, Sour and Roast – wtf?

By GABS resident writer, Beer Diva Kirrily Waldhorn The range of beers available to Aussie beer-lovers is ever-evolving which whilst is incredibly exciting, it can be a little overwhelming when faced with so many choices! To make it easier to find a potential undiscovered new favourite, our team works hard each year to segment every one of the container bar beers into key flavour profiles. These are a fantastic guide to helping you decide which styles and flavours most suit your taste to help you to discover the perfect beer for any occasion. With over 700 breweries in Australia, craft beer offers an incredibly wide variety of styles and flavour profiles and none more so than the ‘push the boundary’ beers we present at GABS. So, rather than fall back into the “too hard” basket, we encourage you to step out of your comfort zone as we know, craft beer is an absolute adventure and should always be an exciting journey of discovery. Whilst there are two main styles of beer, lagers and ales, under each of those styles lies over 150 ‘sub-styles’ of beer… much like red and white wine and the many varietals that sit under each of those styles. Within these sub-styles, the beer industry has worked on categorising the main flavour profiles into seven key flavour profiles. These are a fantastic tool to use as an initial way of finding and identifying beer styles that suit your flavour preferences. 1. CRISP These spring/summer refreshers are great for long lunches, afternoon picnics, beach cricket and backyard bbq’s. These popular beer styles are extremely approachable and easy-drinking. They are crisp & refreshing and often lagers (but not exclusively) with a clean, dry finish. Those beers falling into the CRISP flavour profile tend to be lighter in flavour and body and may have subtle fruit, malt or hoppy characters. The beer styles included in CRISP are Pilsner, Australian Lager, International Lager, Session Ale, Summer Ale, Golden Ale

2. HOP Looking for a punchy, fresh flavour lift? HOP beers offer an aromatic delight to those a little more adventurous. Perfect for a lively dinner party or Sunday roast with friends. This flavour profile is characterised by the generous use of hops imparting both bitterness and lively aromatics, with hop driven beers offering a punchy freshness and vibrancy generally coupled with a balancing sweet malt backbone. These can range from easy-drinking right through to big and bold. Key styles included are XPA, American Pale Ale, Australian Pale Ale, English Pale Ale, IPA, Red IPA 3. MALT Warm & comforting, MALT beers will complement slow-cooking, a cheese platter with friends or as the perfect seasonal transition from summer to autumn. Sweet, rich and often quite decadent, malt driven beers impart toffee, caramel, nutty, toasty or fruity characteristics and can often be darker in colour and lower in bitterness. They are a great option for the cooler months of the year. Amongst MALT profile beers are Amber Ales, Brown Ales, Extra Special Bitters (ESB), Dark Lagers, German Dunkels and rich Scotch Ales 4. FRUITY (& SPICY) The approachability of FRUIT beers will perfectly complement a summer picnic, the end of a bike ride in the countryside, sunset gazing and Sunday brunch. These beers can be naturally fruity (or spicy) based on the raw ingredients, most often the yeast, that is selected by the brewer, or their fruit characters can come directly from the addition of fruit or spice to the beer. They are generally very approachable and often lower in bitterness. Think Hefeweizens (German wheat beer), Witbiers (Belgian wheat beer), farmhouse Saisons, Belgian Tripels and Belgian Dark Ales.

5. ROAST Come to the dark side and embrace ROAST beers, which will enhance a 12hr slow-cooked brisket celebration, a late night sipper by the fire or provide a show-stopping, memorable twist with dessert. Using heavily roasted malts, giving the beer its darker colour and richness, these beers will impart intense coffee, chocolate, liquorice and molasses characters. Often misunderstood, roast beers can be quite easy-drinking and are a fantastic partner to winter cooking. We have all heard of Stout and Porter but also included in this flavour profiles are Schwarzbiers and Black IPA’s. 6. FUNKY (& TART) If you like to walk on the wild side then these are the beers for you. Not for the faint of heart, yet a great entry point for many into craft beer, FUNKY beers are perfect for watching your favourite band at the local pub, barefoot bowls and any other hipster-inspired occasion. These left-of-centre beers are rustic and earthy in nature with varying levels of acidity from light and elegant to mouth-puckering and funky. Using wild yeasts, various bacteria and possibly barrel characters, these are often the most complex of the beer styles.

#GABS2022

Increasingly more and popular with brewers and drinkers alike, styles such as Berliner Weisse, Gose, Fruit Sours, Wild Ales and Flanders Red all form part of this eclectic but super fun flavour profile. 7. SMOKE Reminiscent of a coastal campfire, streaky bacon or peated whiskey, the subdued smoulder of SMOKE beers are as equally at home in a wood cabin or a cosy laneway bar. SMOKE beers use malts that have been smoked over wood fires, or aged in whiskey barrels, which then impart these flavours into the beer. They often have a lovely caramel or toffee malt backbone and are definitely a new experience if you are feeling adventurous. Whilst this flavour profile is often the exception rather than the norm, common styles include Smoked Porter and Rauchbier. These profiles are a fantastic way of classifying beers by their dominant flavour profile and helping to identify which flavours sit in the favourites list. Here at GABS, we encourage you to explore, push your boundaries and most of all, enjoy some great tasting, unique-flavoured beers!

GABS CAN DESIGN AWARDS PRESENTED BY

Every year, there are numerous craft beer awards celebrating the best in class beers brewed around the country. Highly trained judges are looking at the style, clarity, flavour profile, aroma and mouthfeel. They're looking at what goes inside the can. But what about the outside of the can? That brilliantly executed artwork that first catches a craft beer lover’s eye. That pop of colour, witty copy, and bold design that leaps off the shelf. In the world of craft beer, first impressions count. We decided it was time to celebrate the designers and marketers behind those important moments and we asked beer lovers to choose their favourite can designs from many of the leading breweries across the country. Each brewery put forward just one design for consideration, the one they were most proud of from a design perspective released during the last year. Based on votes, we then asked a panel of brand and design experts to review a shortlist of 20 designs to select the inaugural winning design. The team behind the winning design received the Orora Golden Can Trophy plus the honour and prestige of taking out the title in this gold standard award celebrating some of the most creative people in this exciting industry.
