by our students. «Stature» shows in the way our students carry and present themselves to others, their leadership, their inner character and outward strength. How our students treat all «Man» matters. «God» is in us and in this place – whether you walk the halls of elementary, sit in the Student Family Center, or in the stands of an athletic venue, we are reminded of His direction in our lives.

letter from the president
TrueN RTH I
t’s confession time—I’m directionally challenged. While I can spout off obscure historical, theological, and educational anecdotes, I sometimes can’t find my way home. GPS was invented for people like me. I finally know which way is True North. I feel like an early navigator who just discovered the Polar Star.
It’s much the same for schools, Christian ones too. I’ve seen too many just going through the motions of “another school year,” gradually losing track of where they are, and where they were going. And in this era of rapid change, we can’t afford a month or a year “lost” for our children. Do you remember how the Caterpillar advised Alice when she came to Wonderland? Alice: “Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?… I don’t much care where." Caterpillar: “Then it doesn't much matter which way you go.” Alice’s Caterpillar wouldn’t fare well at Greater Atlanta Christian School. This issue of GACS Today is a glimpse into the relentless and well planned efforts underway to go somewhere that matters, God’s True North for the next generation. You’ll see the thoughtful strategy in place, from the sizable Strategic Plan (adopted November 2009, pages 6-7) to a focused GAC-created plan for educating in digital ethics, something children and teens need in this new era (pages 10-11). Greater Atlanta Christian School’s direction is echoed in learning areas such as the arts, where outstanding teachers use their creativity to advance our mission (pages 3-5). Election years provide a grand opportunity to talk about critical thinking, issues, history, conduct, and ethics (pages 12-13). Accreditation has long been a part of the GAC culture, and 2012-13 is an opportunity for external review by three recognized agencies, continuing our commitment to progress (pages 8-9). Whether it’s a growing endowment fund, a new or renovated building, or the GAC Annual Fund, we know progress for our students doesn’t just “happen.” It’s because of supporters like you that the GAC mission can be the strength it is for thousands of children, families, and the entire community. Your generosity shapes GAC for the better and points us to the right roads (see the Annual Report, pages 27-48). Personally, I haven’t been lost in my car in a long time. It’s a nice feeling. And in her mission, GAC knows her True North… Wisdom, Stature, Favor with God, Favor with Man. Enjoy this issue – and help us as we go somewhere that matters.

For me, stature was the most difficult concept to portray. Stature isn’t just about height. Stature is about physical, mental strength and achievement—personal successes, striving for goals and being the best you can be individually and collectively. When you were asked to commission these You’ve created other beautiful pieces of art at paintings, what images came to mind to capture GAC. What are some of your favorites? the GAC mission statement: “And Jesus grew in Tim: The bronze feet of Jesus in the Student Family Center wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and is one I wanted to do for a long time. The nail is the focal point, man” (Luke 2:52)? illustrating the pain and sacrifice Jesus suffered for us. There Tim: I immediately thought of Charles Demuth’s work, an American artist well known for his painting No. 5 in Gold. It’s graphically done with clean lines and has an abstract angular quality that fits well with Long Forum’s glass walls and strange angles.
is also a cross in the Liles Media Center with carved individual reliefs. This was a class project with one of my first sculpture classes and is a good mix of student work and my own.
You wear many hats — mission trip leader, teacher, volleyball coach, and First Sergeant How did you interpret “to grow in wisdom and in the U.S. Army Reserves. How does your experience in these areas affect your ability to stature” on canvas? create art? Tim: This was difficult. When can we ever say that we’ve achieved wisdom? We can always grow in wisdom, but for this panel I chose to use symbols representing the ways we want our students to grow – academic growth, spiritual (Bible) growth, and artistic (creative) growth. For me, stature was the most difficult concept to portray. Stature isn’t just about height. Stature is about physical, mental strength and achievement— personal successes, striving for goals and being the best you can be individually and collectively.

Tim: I think everything we do and experience impacts who
we are. Through missions, teaching, and serving my country, I have the ability to show others, in a unique way, who I am and what I believe. If I use the creative gifts that God has given me, then hopefully others will be touched and ask questions, and I can share my faith in Jesus with them. ■

THE VALUE
E
of
ACCREDITATION
very day, I leave my desk clean and clear. I start a list for the next day, clean out my coffee cup (sort of), and stack everything nicely and neatly in a basket by my desk. It is completely clean with the exception of one lone sticky note. Three words are on that sticky – “Trust but verify.”
In March 2013, a team of trained observers will visit our campus to verify the quality of the education provided by GAC to her students. This visit is the culminating event of a process that began many months, even years ago – accreditation. “Accreditation is a voluntary process of self-evaluation and continuous improvement that reflects compliance with required standards/indicators; involves a self-study; and includes a peer review by educators from outside of our school.” (SAIS, 2012)
Dr. Misty Overman, Junior High Principal
To attain and maintain accreditation, a school must show it meets with quality and integrity the standards established by the accrediting body. The standards center around the issues of vision and purpose, governance and leadership, teaching and learning, documenting and using results, resources and support systems, community, communication and finally, commitment to continuous improvement. The bottom line – are we being true to our mission? GAC is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS), and the National Christian School Association (NCSA). For GAC to maintain our “accredited in good standing” status, the school must meet certain criteria and benchmarks set forth by
those three accrediting organizations. Every five years, we gather data, review our work, and meet with a visiting team to verify our status. While the visit is important, the real work occurs year in and year out. Accreditation is a process that involves the entire GAC community.
A
s we prepare for our visit, a team of GAC community members (a group of administrators, faculty, staff, and parents) will meet to gather our data and prepare the final report outlining school goals, initiatives and plans such as:
• Surveys for Strategic Planning (2:1 Learning Initiative, school level student surveys) • Community publications (Dr. Fincher’s blog, e-blasts, GAC Happenings, GACS Today magazine) • Learning data (testing, grades, attendance, AP scores, PSAT/ SAT, college destinations) • Policies and procedures (Student/Parent Handbook, Staff Handbook, and Statement of Faith)
When our visiting team comes, they will have studied our report and will: • Verify our written responses to the standards • Examine school data • Review our plan of improvement (the GAC Strategic Plan) • Interview board members, school administrators, faculty/ staff, students, parents, and even community members. Finally, they will write a report to the accrediting organizations verifying our compliance with the standards and review our plan for improvement, and they recommend the continuation of our status of accreditation. The hard work is never done. Continuing to grow as an institution is a process that requires ongoing attention. We do not prepare for this visit with trepidation but, rather, with thankfulness that as a community we are committed to quality growth. ■
TRUST BUT VERIFY
Pictured are a sampling of those who collaborate on accreditation. Principals, Directors, Department Heads and Committee Leaders all work together with one common purpose.

Julia Osteen, Technology Integration Chair and Junior High Teacher
O
ver the past few years, our campus has seen a dramatic change in tools that the students are using.
The goal remains to connect the GAC mission, learning environment and students to the 21st century of creativity, innovation and collaboration. As we navigate these unchartered waters, we recognize the need to ensure our students receive a comprehensive education that includes ethics, leadership, accountability, and adaptability. To that end, the Elementary, Junior High and Senior High schools collaborated on a Digital Literacy Curriculum that will guide teachers in providing rich experiences in a new kind of classroom. The GAC Digital Literacy Curriculum, somewhat based on national curriculums from noted organizations such as Common Sense Media, is customized for our students. Subjects included are:
WHERE ETHICS & 21ST CENTURY
LEARNING MEET
• Online safety and security • Digital citizenship (like manners, bullying and ethics) • Research and information fluency (preventing plagiarism) Coinciding with the creation of the GAC Digital Literacy Curriculum is the revision of the Technology Competencies, a list of experiences with digital tools that our students can expect to have by the end of 2nd grade, 5th grade, 8th grade and 12th grade; the kinds of experiences that encourage the development of creativity and innovation, communication and collaboration skills. Based on the revised standards for students from the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), the revision of the competencies is one of many partnerships between Elementary, Junior High and Senior High faculty and administrators, ensuring a scope and sequence that will serve as a guide for teachers and students as they forge their way through the learning landscape.
“The world is interacting with our kids at an early age. Students need technology skills, but it is even more important to understand the moral implications of their actions. The technology will change; our goal is an ethical understanding that will guide them come what may.” Bonnie Baker, Junior High & Senior High Media Specialist
While our children are growing up in a very different world than we did, we continue to ask what needs to happen to help them develop into godly men and women in the 21st century. We invite GAC families to join us in support of our goal not only to equip our students for an undefinable future, but also to make sure they develop into the best people they can be, sharing the love of Jesus with those whom they meet. ■

CAMPAIGN
While some students looked forward to Spartan football and others pondered their weekend plans, a different kind of excitement stirred in my Advanced Placement Government class this fall: Election Fever.
any hours were dedicated to discussing current events in national government, and few events were more current than the presidential election. Students had the opportunity to share their viewpoints as well as to listen to those of their peers and media outlets concerning topics such as the national conventions, controversial statements made by the candidates, and politically relevant events like the attacks on American embassies. From this process of research and discussion, students emerged with a better understanding not only of the issues and the candidates but also of what they believe. As senior Jamie Campbell stated, “Learning about the presidential [race] in AP Government was really beneficial to me. In the past I have never really known what was going on during the election, but discussing it in this class has helped me form an opinion of my own.” Students in AP Government and other Americentric social studies classes were able to learn about the election from a variety of perspectives, both in and out of the classroom. While they studied the roles of political parties, interest groups, the media, and opinion polling in shaping the candidates’ strategies as well as voter behavior, many of them also engaged in crafting their own political opinion polls to administer to the Senior High student body. Perhaps most significantly, the AP Government students’ major group project
for the semester required them to choose and research a major or minor party presidential candidate, develop a spot advertisement for him/her, and role-play him/her in Senior High Chapel just before the election. Senior Caity Barker commented, “Focusing on the election through article reviews, class discussions, and projects, I have been able to have a better understanding of the two candidates and keep up with the race for president.”
M
any Junior High students wonder how what they are learning in school applies to everyday life. With the recent 2012 presidential election, they made the connection. Junior High Civics allows for an exploration of the U.S. government with a focus on the three branches – executive, judicial, and legislative – and the election process. During the fall, JH students: • researched party platforms and key issues • watched CNN Student News at home, then came to class prepared to discuss news and issues with their peers • studied the Electoral College, specifically the popular vote vs. the electoral vote (8th graders) • created their own political party, designed a platform, and campaigned for their party (8th graders) ■
Brad Schultz, Elementary Assistant Principal
D
uring the presidential election in 2008, many of our elementary students were toddlers. Rather than focusing on the present day candidate platforms, our elementary students learn about the election process and that our country provides the right for her citizens to vote and share their opinions without rebellion or war. Elementary students recently held a mock presidential election pre-rigged to shock the candidates. Following a long, drawn-out, pre-arranged vote count, the student with the highest number of votes began celebrating with their supporters. Then, to the shock of onlookers, the other student was offered congratulations and introduced as the next President. Lessons about the Electoral College and the popular vote are important to understand even in Elementary grades. ■
Of course, no election study is ever complete without an election party. On November 6, Dr. and Mrs. Fincher hosted their 5th National Election night party for the AP Government students, complete with tension-filled media projections and excited political discourse among the students. Fortunately students were already briefed on that most confusing element of American electoral politics, the Electoral College, so the evening focused on the fact that learning about government can be fun. Even more importantly, with Democrats, Republicans, and Independents all being represented, it was also a reminder to our students that even though one candidate wins and others lose, God’s people can still enjoy a period of fun and fellowship to appreciate their country and its system of elections. ■
“Learning about the presidential [race] in AP Government was really beneficial to me. In the past I have never really known what was going on during the election, but discussing it in this class has helped me form an opinion of my own.” 12

What inspired you to become a teacher?
Tell us about your family.
I have always wanted to be a teacher – my early teachers made strong impressions on me. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t “teaching school” to my sister at home. I had an entire classroom set up in my basement, complete with a chalkboard and a teacher’s desk! I love children, love learning, and love helping others learn. Being a teacher was an easy decision for me. I received degrees in education from Vanderbilt University (BS) and Georgia State (Master’s) and look forward to seeing my students each day.
I’ve been married to Philip for almost 14 years. Our two kids Jack (7th) and Camille (5th) are students at GAC. We also have a dog, Chloe, who is 7 years old.
How long have you been at GAC?
Jamie Dalton, Communications & Project Assistant
I was a student at GAC from 6th-12th grade. I even played on the tennis team! I’ve worked at GAC for 5 years – first as a Teaching Assistant and now as a 4th grade teacher. I love that my own kids now enjoy GAC. They are involved in ballet, band, piano and football.
What was your inspiration to become a teacher? When I was very little, it was a toss-up between being a teacher or cheerleader. But both of my parents were teachers, and I always wanted to be like them. My father taught history in high school, and my mother was a preschool teacher. I received my degree from Harding University in Elementary Education and look forward to starting a graduate program this coming summer.
Any interesting facts about you that most people wouldn’t know? I was on the TV show Romper Room when I was 6 years old. I’ve played on the same ALTA tennis team for almost 20 years. Secretly, I would love to be the next Food Network Star.
What is currently on your iTunes playlist? I just downloaded Matt Redman’s 10,000 Reasons and have it as my ringtone. One of my favorite songs that I’m listening to right now is I Won’t Give Up by Jason Mraz. ■
What changes have you seen take place since you were a student here? There are many differences in GAC from when I was a student. The facilities have multiplied. We didn’t have a football team. The number of students has greatly increased, and the technology is amazing. One thing has remained consistent over the years – it’s perhaps the most important reason why we send our children here – GAC was and still is founded on strong Christian principles.
How long have you been at GAC?
Lauren Hollier, 4th GradeTeacher
I’ve been a GAC parent for 13 years, and this is my second year being the K3 teacher at GAC. My husband, John, and I both grew up in Christian schools and received great educations, instruction, love and guidance from our teachers. We wanted the same experience for our three kids.
Having children of your own at GAC in various grade levels (11th, 9th and K5), how would you describe the K3 experience to other families who might be looking at schools? K3 is the starting point, the first foot in the door. If we can make a family’s experience a grand one this first year, then they will want to be with us for life!
Alicia Wood, K3 Teacher
How do you feel you make a difference in the lives of these first-year families? I tell parents on Back to School Night, “We are a family.” Sometimes moms can feel guilty about leaving their 3-year-old – or for working at all. I tell them it’s going to be ok and that their child is loved here. We teach these little ones to make wise choices, to thank God for everything, and to be a light for Jesus. My favorite song to sing with them is This Little Light of Mine.
Does the K3 class integrate technology in their curriculum? You should see their faces light up with excitement as we read a story or play games on iPads using letters, colors and numbers. It’s
14
winter 2012 | gacs today
rewarding to watch them light up with a sense of accomplishment. We send parents videos of their children, and they appreciate it so much. Emails come to us with words of appreciation that their children are engaged, happy, challenged and ready to come back the next day.
Any interesting facts about you that most people wouldn’t know? I went cross country in a RV with 8 other people to the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.
What is currently your favorite thing on your iTunes playlist? The Beatles “1” album. ■

40 40 YEARS YOUNG D R . DAV I D F I N C H E R , P R E S I D E N T
GACS Gymnasium was its name in the early days. Funds were tight, so early volunteers and founders like Jim Combee (current GAC Board Chairman), and Jesse Long (first President of GAC) pitched in with paint brushes and plumbing skills. The Gym opened in January of 1972, and 2012 marks its 40th anniversary of serving GAC families.
With time, new facilities were developed on campus with more targeted purposes: Long Forum, Williams Fine Arts Center, Spartan Gymnasium, and more. The GAC Board of Trustees believes heritage is precious and has committed to repurpose historic facilities for new purposes when possible, bringing them to life in fresh ways to match student and faculty needs of today. Now at the age of 40, The Bradford Center has a new name
The Gym was a center point of GAC life for decades. The first home of GAC basketball, it provided a venue that allowed GAC to develop a powerful reputation on the court. By 1983, under the leadership of legendary coaches like boys’ head coach and first principal, Jackie Bradford (3 state championships), girls’ coaches Dale Vickery, Bill Alsup, and Bill Burton (current GAC Administrative Vice President), GAC had five state championships. In that same year, “The Gym” was renamed Bradford Gymnasium.
and a new lease on life. It has been changed inside and out. It’s now the home of the growing GAC School of Ballet, with three exceptional dance studios and spacious gathering areas for students and parents. GAC elementary children and teachers now have striking and expansive Visual Arts and Music classrooms and spaces. And there is still room for athletic practice space on the Bill Burton Court.
Bradford Gym was a place where secondary students met for chapels and elementary students hosted hundreds of family and friends for Spring Celebrations. Grandparents’ Days, Frog Hollow Fall Festivals, and all-school worship—all found a home in Bradford Gym.

GAC has been named an Apple Distinguished School for two consecutive years. Only 52 schools have received this honor. For 2013, Apple asked each eligible school to create an iBook to showcase the use of technology as part of the learning process. Follow this QR code to view GAC’s iBook.
This fall, administrators, faculty, coaches, teaching assistants and parents enrolled in a 32-hour instructive course. Training and techniques were taught that equip students with the skills to empower them to avoid or escape harm. The RadKIDS program focuses on fitness, muscle memory, exercises, safety drills – and it’s fun. RadKIDS is the leading personal safety empowerment program for children ages 5-12. Attorney, child advocate and GAC parent Gary Martin Hayes founded the program in 2008 in cooperation with the non-profit organization, Keep Georgia Safe.

Three Basic Rules of RadKIDS:
1. No one has the right to hurt me because I am special. 2. I don’t have the right to hurt anyone else unless they try to hurt me, and then I stop them. 3. If anyone tries to hurt me, trick me, or make me feel bad inside, it’s not my fault…so I can tell.

an you hear it…the sound of a dynamic and growing Spartan Band program? Wes York joined GAC as the Band Director in the fall of 2006 with 110 students enrolled in band classes. Today, the band classes have more than doubled in size with 213 members. The Marching Spartans band has also doubled. The Jazz Band, which began with 10 members in 2007, has now split into two jazz groups with almost 50 students. Mr. York’s talented students provide a soundtrack for GAC life – they excite fans at Spartan football games, play the sounds of the holidays at Christmas celebrations, celebrate art and the arrival of spring at the Black & White Gala, and cheer on the graduates at commencement. This is no ordinary band program. Wes says, “Success is a product of our system and our spirit.” Mr. York’s system is simple. He sets very high standards for each student. In return, Wes exposes his students to the very best available music literature for each level of proficiency, he provides multiple performance experiences and settings, and he encourages strong student leadership. This year the Marching Spartans have the opportunity to march in the halftime show of the Outback Bowl in Tampa, FL. Last school year, they marched down Main Street in Disney during the park’s 40th year celebration parade.
Since Mr. York’s arrival, the Spartan band program has received many accolades – both as an ensemble and as individuals.
Marching Spartans: Superior ratings in all four categories at the 2012 Georgia Contest of Champions Symphonic Band: Superior ratings at 2012 State Band Festival Concert Band: Superior ratings at 2012 State Band Festival Jazz Bands: Superior ratings at 2012 State Band Festival Students at GAC are introduced to the band during the spring semester of 4th grade. In the 5th grade band class, Wes and Robert Turner ignite their interest in instruments and music as they experience a taste of playing in the band for a Spartan football game. Once they have that experience, they are hooked. Whether he is making music, stacking chairs, lining fields, hemming concert attire or playing charts, Wes York’s passion for the Lord is evident in all he does. He is able to share this passion with his students through the study and making of music. ■

CHANGING DR. TIM VICK, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
National recognition for individuals and organizations does not come easily. The honor is so rare, one must take notice when the distinction occurs. Honored Recipient… Such an honor was bestowed upon our very own Gary Schofield, GAC’s Strength and Conditioning Coach. At the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s conference, the accreditation board named Gary as America’s best high school strength and conditioning coach. Though hesitant to speak of the accolade, when pressed, Gary will tell you “there is no higher honor” in his profession. Al Vermeil, the recipient of NSCA’s Lifetime Achievement Award, asked the audience of over 450 people, “Where is that young man who received the national high school award?” When Gary meekly stood to be recognized, Al said, “This is the best coach in this entire room. He is changing people’s lives …not just changing bodies.”
On-site Trainer… We are extremely fortunate to have Coach Schofield on our campus. I find it strange that some of our own families will pay exorbitant amounts of money to secure the services of outside personal trainers and strength coaches when they have access to the best in the nation without paying additional funds. Coaches across the nation reach out to Coach Schofield for advice. In fact, 82 of them contacted him, requesting advice and a copy of his coveted training program, within days following the awards banquet. Jeremy Boone, the professional strength and training coach for the Carolina Panthers spent six hours this past month at GAC, asking Gary to walk him through his Performance Training program. There are no secrets with Gary. He is a servant in every sense of the word. He described in detail everything that he does, including each phase of his in-season and out-of-season strength and training programs plus his speed and yoga activities. He also shared what he considers to be his most critical phase of the program – character development.
LIVES
ends. He sets the weight room up at 6:15 AM for students who are unable to participate in one of the performance training classes during the school day. He then works all seven periods of the day. At the end of the day, Coach Schofield has worked with 270 students, which triples the number seen during his first year on our campus. Gary tries to find ways to increase the number of GAC females that take advantage of his program. 85% of the students he works with now are male while only 15% are female. The biggest misconception is that his Performance Training program is a football program, because football players have more often taken advantage of his services. Other than the entire football team, there are currently about 40 basketball players, 10-15 wrestlers, 5-10 lacrosse players, and 5-10 baseball players participating in the program. The coaches whose teams have taken advantage of his services will attest to the success their teams have enjoyed. They credit Gary’s knack for customizing the program to fit their respective sport, making the students better athletes.
Innovative… In his quest for excellence, Gary has most recently included progressive evaluation tools like Dartfish into his program, a video analysis instrument, and the beep test, a fitness test taking an athlete to a level of fatigue in order to determine his or her true fitness level. For all of the success and recognition that has come his way, Coach Schofield does not spend time basking in his accomplishments. You can find him in the training room or on the field changing lives. ■
His Workday Never Ends… I have never seen a coach who worked harder to stay abreast of the best practices in their field. It seems Gary’s workday never this spread photographed by Frank Zayas

GAC Drum Line. Varsity football players and cheerleaders welcome elementary students as they exit their cars. Students of all ages hurry to Hollis Smith Quad to hear the Marching Spartans play the GAC fight song, and the K3 students begin to dance. Parents make plans for tailgate parties and work out final volunteer assignments for concession duty. Banners hang high and signs fill the school hallways encouraging the football team. Players take the field and the fans go wild. It’s game day at GAC. There’s nothing quite like it.

YOUR SUPPORT + ENDOWMENTS + DILIGENCE = A HEALTHY, MISSION-FOCUSED GAC
Taking Stewardship Seriously
A N N U A L R E P O R T 2011
2012
Josh Thomason, Associate Director of Finance
A balanced budget is important to the mission of any organization. The process of making a budget work takes time, diligence, and support. The funds we have been entrusted with at GAC are God’s, and we believe a balanced budget implies a certain level of financial stewardship to him. In Chancellor Jesse Long’s book, Greater Atlanta Christian School – The Early Days, he tells of a time in the 1960s when he pledged his wedding ring as collateral for a loan to ensure Greater Atlanta Christian School’s survival. That was a time of planned deficits and prayers for survival. For years a line of credit was needed to fulfill operational needs. Thanks to prudent planning and generous giving, GAC was able to cease utilization

of the credit line in 1999. Thanks to God, we have been able to balance the budget each year since that time. You have entrusted Greater Atlanta Christian School with some of your resources through gifts, tuition or both.
We are blessed that GAC is able to accomplish her mission with health. We strive to use funds responsibly while providing an education of the highest quality. Because of your support, the school today is able to reallocate financial resources to our students and teachers, not to the banker. A balanced budget implies strength and a focus on mission. We are blessed to be in such a position.
Sue Henderson Early Childhood and Elementary Media Center
Another signal of vitality is a strong endowment. Vibrant universities and private schools seek to build endowments that support the mission and school’s long-term sustainability. The principal may not be spent, but a portion of the growth may be allocated each year by the the GAC Foundation for specific needs. In addition to our Sustaining Endowment, GAC is blessed to have endowments for Teacher Quality & Growth, Facility Care, Financial Aid, Christian Life Fund and Learning Advocacy.
Greater Atlanta Christian School
In 1961 the founders of GAC prayed for the fulfillment of a dream and for the means to make it happen. Today, we pray that we can expand to new heights. Thanks to God, and thanks to your support, Greater Atlanta Christian is positioned to continue influencing metro-Atlanta students and families. ■ photographed by Frank Zayas

Georgia Goal Donors
gacs 2011-2012
Greater Atlanta Christian School Annual Report 2011-2012
gacs 2011-2012
want to take an opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to each of you – parents, family, friends, colleagues – for investing your financial resources with GAC. Your continued faithful support of us year after year helps the ministry and the work of GAC thrive. Christian education depends on the support and generosity of Christian stewards like you. On the following pages are lists of parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, alumni and friends who financially supported Greater Atlanta Christian School over the last fiscal year. GAC would not have reached her goals without your support.
Thank you parents, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends for your participation in the Georgia Tax Credit program in 2011. Since 2008, the state of Georgia has allowed for the redirection of up to $2,500 of state income tax liability to a qualified student scholarship organization for the purpose of needs-based financial aid. In 2012-2013 Georgia GOAL provided scholarships for 40 students, 8 of whom were new to GAC. Students receiving GA GOAL dollars were split proportionately between Elementary, Junior High and Senior High. The average Georgia GOAL award per student was $6,718. Without your support, these students would be unable to experience the benefits of a GAC Christian education. Your support is vital to the continuation of the GAC mission.

GENEROSITY AND FAITHFULNESS HAVE NEVER BEEN IN SHORT SUPPLY AT GAC. IN THE EARLY 1960s MANY FAMILIES GAVE SACRIFICIALLY TO MAKE SURE THE SCHOOL COULD BEGIN. IN MORE RECENT TIMES, DONATIONS FROM FAMILIES, FRIENDS AND ALUMNI HAVE CREATED OPPORTUNITIES FOR PROGRAM AND FACILITY GROWTH THAT CONTINUES TO KEEP GAC AT THE FOREFRONT OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION.
M
aking the decision to move away from the Magazine Sale after being National Champions for 30 years was hard. However, this fall we were overwhelmed with the support of the transition from parents, faculty, staff, grandparents and friends uniting for the common purpose of balancing the school’s budget with donations to the Annual Fund. School spirit and FUN were in huge supply, and we successfully exceeded our Annual Fund goal of $750,000. Thank you to the whole GAC family for being ALL IN!
ALL IN! • Highest percentage of participation by families in the history of the school • 100% participation from the faculty & staff within weeks of campaign rollout • Exceeded the Annual Fund goal of $750,000 with over 93% of our families participating • Faculty & staff contributions totaling over $100,000 • Over 99% of Early Childhood Village & Elementary families participated by the second week of the campaign
‘FUN’DRAISING Activities involving the students in each school to celebrate the Annual Fund participation: • Early Childhood Village – snow cones, picnics, pajama day • Elementary – team jersey day, swim party, picnics • Junior High – popsicles, pizza parties, out of uniform, Bomb the Baldies, first in lunch line • Senior High – Spartan Spikefest, donuts, donor appreciation activities

Annual Fund Pledge List
Thank you to the following families for their participation in the 2012-2013 GAC Annual Fund. Your support is an important part of the operating budget that is not covered by tuition. This year was critical as the school made the decision to not hold our annual Magazine Sale fundraiser. The Parent and Faculty/Staff Campaign ran from August 6th - October 5th. Without the financial support from the individuals listed below, GAC’s tuition would need to increase to cover the program and educational experiences offered. We humbly thank you.

here was nothing special or remarkable about the 16-yearold boy who walked through the doors of Greater Atlanta Christian School that fall for the first day of class. He was an average student academically. Nor was he especially attractive. He was not an athlete. He did not come from a wealthy family. In short, there was nothing about him that made him stand out or make him someone that would be in high demand as a friend. Up to this point, he had never been popular. He had not even fit in to even the most basic groups within the traditional high school hierarchy. It wasn’t until much later in life that he discovered that he was not alone in this. He came from a home filled with fear and pain and love and affection. He lived in a constant state of flux, between terror and joy. He believed himself to be lazy, though he wasn’t. He believed himself

to be a liar and dishonest, though he was not any more than most other kids. And he deeply believed that, somewhere deep down inside his very soul…he was flawed. He was not normal. There was something fundamentally wrong with him. Why else would his life be like it was? Years later he would understand, but that fall day he did not. GAC wasn’t the private school that it is today. It was growing but only beginning to grasp the possibilities of the institution it might one day become. It was made up of predominantly uppermiddle class and wealthy families, most of whom attended GAC because of the school’s affiliation with their church. Many of the students had attended for years, becoming a close, tight-knit group. It was not a large school, so new people were fairly rare. There was no way to hide or blend in. Everyone knew everyone – and had for quite sometime. You would be forgiven for assuming that, under the circumstances, the children in the school described above might be a little…exclusive. You might assume, for
instance, that a new student whom no one knew might be shunned. You might even assume that a new student like the 16-yearold boy who arrived on that fall day might be ridiculed, harassed. Children can be cruel, after all. You would be forgiven for assuming such things because that is, sadly, what often happens. The boy knew that, too. He had experienced it his whole life. He fully expected for this to be one more terrifying disappointment to be added to a long list of disappointments. He knew what to expect. Sitting by himself at lunch. Being laughed at for not having his driver’s license, much
HE FULLY EXPECTED FOR THIS TO BE ONE MORE TERRIFYING DISAPPOINTMENT.
And his life was changed forever.
It was with these assumptions that he walked through those doors that day, fully expecting that life as he knew it would continue on its downward trajectory. To say that he was scared would be an understatement. All his life he had dealt with change the same way. Through all the moves, all the different schools, the different neighborhoods, his defense had always been the same. Be funny – or at least try. And then run and hide if that didn’t work. But that day he was done. He had tried everything to be normal, or at least pretend to be, and none of it had worked. He was out of ideas. He had
Within the halls of GAC, he was embraced. He was accepted. He was invited to belong. He found his voice. Within those halls, all of the garbage that had been clinging to him disappeared. His slate was wiped clean. Suddenly he wasn’t a loser. Suddenly, popular people talked to him. He joined the drama club not to escape, but because his new friends encouraged him to. And the jocks came to his plays and talked to him in the halls, and he went with friends to games and parties. Because that’s what happened at this special place. And then, the most amazing thing of all happened…
nothing left. And that terrified him even more. But he had no choice, so through the doors he walked.
Twenty-five years later, that same boy, now a man gone bald and battling the bulge, stood before those classmates and said, “Thank you.” It wasn’t enough. Not by a long shot. And he was so terrified that he almost didn’t say it. Years of being on stage and behind a microphone did nothing to quell the nervousness. His hands shook. His voice wavered. He fought tears. He almost didn’t say it. But how often do you get a chance to thank the very people who saved your life? ■

THIS TIME IT’S PERSONAL
less a car. Standing alone at his locker between classes while others around him talked and laughed about parties. Being picked on and mocked by the jocks, the kings of every high school. He knew what to expect.
His entire life suddenly turned around. He still dealt with troubles at home, but now he didn’t feel responsible for them. Things still didn’t always go his way, but now he began to realize that he was not alone in this. Because of the kindness and friendship, because of the love shown him by his classmates, his life began to have possibilities. Instead of assuming that life would always be full of pain and guilt, he began to see that life might be good after all. In a very real and tangible way, his classmates had saved his life.

G
AC is blessed to have a growing number of active alumni who are deeply involved in the life of the school as parents, teachers, community coaches, and volunteers. The alumni have first-hand knowledge of what it was like to be students at GAC in the early years of the school and can compare that to being parents of GAC students in 2012. One such family is the Allen family: Steven (‘84), Angelique (‘89), and their daughter Grace, currently in 6th grade at GAC. They are the only GAC alumni who are married to each other, teach full time at GAC, and are parents of a GAC student. They are literally “All In” at GAC. Steven came to GAC in the 6th grade when his family moved to Atlanta from Illinois in 1977. He was actively involved in drama, band and chorus. Steven had roles in a number of Clif Jones’ plays and fondly remembers portraying Alfred Doolittle in My Fair Lady. He attended Abilene Christian University and majored in Theater, graduating in 1988. He earned a M.Ed. in Educational Technology from Walden University in 2004 and also completed certification in teaching English.
Steven and Angelique married in October of 1993 and celebrate their anniversary each year at Frog Hollow (as I said, they are “All In”). After working in the corporate world for a few years, Angelique became a full-time mom when Grace was born in 2001. Angelique credits Dr. Sandy Spiceland for encouraging her to come teach math at GAC in 2005. Dr. Spiceland remembered her as an outstanding student as well as a math whiz in her years at GAC. Angelique now coaches our varsity math team in addition to teaching five math classes. She is now in her eighth year of teaching at her alma mater. Steven also began his working career in the corporate world. In the same year that his wife began teaching at GAC, he began working part-time in the drama department in set design and construction. Many who have enjoyed drama productions over the past eight years have marveled at the outstanding set designs created by Steven. He is now in his third year as a full-time instructor, teaching junior high language arts and drama.
Looking back over their years both as students and now teachers at GAC, both Angelique Blackwell began her time Steven and Angelique are as dedicated at GAC in the 8th grade. Angelique as ever to their alma mater. Angelique angelique (blackwell) allen & dr. dwight love, 1998 shares, “I put my child in other people’s was heavily involved in the math team under the leadership of the legendary Dr. hands at our school and they put their Dwight Love. She remembers the math team traveling 18 weekends children in my hands, an honor both ways.” Steven concludes, “I in a year, often to out-of-state tournaments, and being a key work daily for the betterment of this great school even more than member of Doc Love’s 1989 State Championship math team. In her for a paycheck.” Both deeply appreciate the growth in the academic senior year, Angelique was Star Student, a National Merit Finalist, program, and, more importantly, they both are thankful to God for and the first student from GAC to be accepted to Duke University. the growth in the spiritual environment. As Angelique reflects, “It Graduating Duke in 1993, she earned a MBA from Georgia State in was great back then, but there is even more buy-in by the students 1999 and then completed certification in secondary mathematics. now to the school’s spiritual mission.” ■ gacs today | winter 2012
